Music Week September 24, 2013
Guests unveiled for new Sky Arts show by Paul Williams
http://www.musicweek.com/news/read/guests-unveiled-for-new-sky-arts-show/056151
Ray Davies, Nile Rodgers and Lindsey Buckingham will be among the guests on a new Sky Arts music show hosted by Malcolm Gerrie.
Talks Music will launch on the channel at 9pm on November 4 and run for 10 weeks, each week throwing the spotlight on a music legend. These will include in conversation Tony Bennett, whose insights will include the first time he met Frank Sinatra, Nile Rodgers whose talk turns to such subjects as Madonna, Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie, Boy George and Jeff Beck who talks about working with Jimmy Page.
As host Malcom Gerrie brings more than three decades of experience as one of the leading creators of music TV, having worked behind the scenes on such iconic shows as The Tube and The White Room as well as the Brit Awards for several years. He is also the series' executive producer.
He said: “When Sky Arts asked me if I’d like to host Talks Music, I jumped at the chance. Getting in front of a camera and talking music to some of my ultimate musical icons was both surreal and incredible. I’m proud that Talks Music will be part of a channel so committed to music and musicians.”
The programem is durected by Jeff Wurtz and co-produced by the Emmy-winning Synergistix Media, which makes the long-running TV series Inside the Actors Studio.
so turns out Lindsey's will be the first one, airing November 11:

Sky Arts’ …Talks Music Show Debuts Monday
Intimate music strand brings “masterclass” treatment to Nile Rodgers, Ray Davies, Graham Nash and Jeff Beck. First up: Lindsey Buckingham
By Danny Eccleston November 6, 2013
Lindsey Buckingham Talks Music with Malcolm Gerrie.
A ROOM, TWO CHAIRS, a musician and instrument, an audience drawn from the ranks of earnest young musicians and producers, and a host with a ridiculous track record in music TV. Malcolm Gerrie, all-time music telly hall-of-famer having produced irreverent ’80s trailblazer The Tube, ’90s Britpop showcase The White Room and more, is the man asking the questions on Sky Arts 1 HD’s …Talks Music, TV’s latest attempt to dive deep into the minds of legendary musos.
Debuting at 9pm next Monday, November 11, subject/victim #1 is Fleetwood Mac maestro Lindsey Buckingham (pictured above), and MOJO’s preview “screener” promised a revealing programme where Buckingham’s still-febrile intensity comes through loud and clear.
Over an hour prog that fair skips by, Buckingham gets the axe out for The Chain, Big Love and other classics. Although, just like anyone who’s ever sat with an artist in an “intimate environment” while they wail on their thing, Gerrie’s not quite sure what to do with himself, and settles for grinning awkwardly while slapping his thigh in time. Something to look at for later episodes, perhaps.

Great interview, Lindsey was relaxed and open and honest with the audience.
He had his Taylor guitar and Stan on hand. He done Stephanie, The Chain, Big Love and Bleed to love her.
He also done a little demo of how dreams is put together on the guitar.
Focused on buckingham nicks, meeting the band, rumours and tusk.
Probably have seen it all before in one capacity or another but it was a good watch and a nice wee Q&A from the audience at the end.

I'm in the wrong country and thus have no subscription but, as there doesn't seem to be an easy solution - that I know of - to rip from the Sky Box to a computer, as well as having it on your Sky Box, are you also able to watch it online yet here?

If you can, there are ways to capture whatever is playing on the screen at the time. I myself use http://applian.com/replay-video-capture/ as part of a package that that company produces but I assume there are free programmes out there that will probably do the job. I just don't know what they are! :D
Show sounds good though. Thanks for the information. :)

Yeah he talked and out how he and Stevie were still trying to work on a release for that album. And he hoped it would be possible.
No information was given on any future plans of any description.

ah, very cool that you can already have access to it! jealous, i remember when these young artists who were there were first tweeting about going to this event!
yeah we have heard Stephanie, BTLH and BL acoustically in the past, but the only acoustic version of The Chain i've heard was that behind the scenes recording from CMT crossroads with LBT, which was pretty stunning, but there were other guitars in addition to his and a lot of harmonies in that version. his guitar solo on the acoustic was very intense!! really curious to hear this version.
the whole interview as you described it sounds cool enough, although i'm always sad when neither interviewer nor audience pays enough attention to his incredible solo catalog and all questions are regurgitated from the past... but what can you do.
either way, just for that acoustic version of the chain alone plus putting together guitar parts for dreams, seems would be well worth watching. hope that once it airs on the 11th, you or someone figures out how to put it on youtube, mediafire, or somewhere where we can access it, pretty pretty please!!

I can't wait to see this show. I love that he's playing The Chain :blob2: , and would love to hear Stephanie again, as well. I'm also pleased to hear that he talked about his parts in Dreams. That's a good topic, how he approaches Stevie's or Chris's work, rather than the usual "what was it like making Rumours?". Watching Lindsey play GDW and Gypsy in concert is fascinating to me, so hearing him break down Dreams is something I'm really looking forward to.

Yes, I do like that idea. I've already heard him discuss Dreams, but there are definitely other songs of theirs that I would like to hear him speak about and the others as well.
What do they remember about working on each other's songs? Perhaps it's because we get that angle so rarely, I find it almost more interesting than what they say about their own songs and wish other albums got the introspection that Rumours does.

TV Interview with Lindsey Buckingham
September 26th, 2013
This week I was excited to be invited to come along to the TV recording of Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac. I was one of a few people who was asked if I wanted to ask him a question! err of course I said yes!!;) He played many well known tracks from Fleetwood Mac on his acoustic guitar. The audience loved him and his playing was brilliant and totally captivating! I asked him what his all time personal favourite track was and why. On the question of why, he did refer to an earlier discussion about Tusk, the album which came after Rumours, but also Seeds We Sow. Although I wasn’t sure if he was talking about the title track to that album or the whole album. There were also nostalgic video clips of early performances with Stevie Nicks which were amazing. It was an electric experience!;)

I think there cannot be comparisons. We are very spoiled in terms of the guests we have heard, some huge names, brilliant musicians, Lindsey Buckingham is on tomorrow, he does a version of Big Love, really extraordinary, hairs on the back of the neck.

Thanks for posting this - I only just realised I could watch it! I thought I'd have to be a Sky subscriber.
Its very short, about a minute, and they are talking about the phenomenal success of Rumours. Lindsey is saying that no one could foresee just how successful that album was going to be, that it was insane how long it stayed at the top of the charts, and it was a lot to take in for a 27 year old.
Now I'm just hoping someone gets the whole programme onto YouTube

yeah all the reports i'm getting are saying there were the same old questions so he just gave the same old answers... as Madness also reported few days ago. and the only good parts were bits of songs he did but all of them except Big Love were just bits (the chain, dreams, landslide, bleed to love her). apparently q&a audience went to great length introducing themselves as musicians only to ask him about decades old relationships, no musical questions, no interesting solo work questions or anything after Tusk really in the whole interview. too bad. but still wish to see it really bad! apparently deconstructing Dreams was interesting and Stephanie was a bit different than during OMS, warmer.

That is so stupid. I have to wonder if those people were really musicians at all or, if they were, did someone tell them what questions to ask. I can't think of any guitar enthusiasts who would really ask him: "Back in 1893 how did it feel working with Stevie after you two had already broken up?"
Lindsey: Well, you compartmentalize ...

Lyndsey Buckingham Talks Music, Sky Arts One
AOR craftsman on how he sprinkled fairy dust over Fleetwood Mac's songs
by Russ CoffeyMonday, 11 November 2013
Sometimes TV doesn’t need to be “challenging” or “groundbreaking” to be thoroughly worthwhile. The first episode of Sky Arts new “…talks music” series saw the familar format of a live, seated interview applied to one of pop music’s highest achievers: Lyndsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac. TV producer, Malcolm Gerrie led proceedings in an attractive theatre in front of an audience of students. Most memorable were some blistering live demonstrations of Buckingham’s craft.
Gerrie’s interview style may have been a little more One Show than Parkinson but still he kept the singer/guitarist well at ease. The ever-youthful 64-year-old fizzed and buzzed through his trip down memory lane. First, we learnt how he met Stephanie “Stevie” Nicks at high school when he was a music geek in the junior year, and she a feisty free spirit in the year above. The two met again a couple of years later and a romantic and musical union blossomed. After joining Buckingham's college band, the two then split to form Buckingham-Nicks.The singer's description of moving down to LA and scoring a record deal after six months conjured up images of palm trees and wide-eyed hope. Then, after hearing how Mick Fleetwood hired them almost on a whim, one imagined wild stories of Fleetwood Mac’s legendary excess to be just around the corner.
In the end, however, we didn’t get much gossip - at least not directly. Buckingham told us in broad terms how the studio during the recording of Rumours consisted of two pairs of feuding exes and a whole lot of drugs. But, for all the dirt he didn't spill about the personal dynamics, his manner and expression gave a vivid sense of the tension. Moreover, his dissection on the nuts and bolts of the album revealed the barbed subtexts to the words. Gerrie’s cue card then prompted a question on how the band survived the emotional and physical turmoil of this period. Buckingham’s reply was “youthful resilience”.
That still didn’t explain why he now look healthier than the others. Maybe it is just genetic? Buckingham’s healthy tan and cheerful philosophising certainy seemed like the product of alpha genes. Also his Californian manners betrayed no sense of the volatilite and difficult nature some have accused him of. Instead the impression he gave was of a well-centred man of huge natural talent - a craftsman whose forte is arranging and completing half-finished ideas. The various demonstrations he gave on an acoustic guitar prompted open-mouthed expressions of awe from the young audience. His rendition of "Big Love" was stunning.
Of course, after Rumours, the only way was down. When given the job of producing the follow-up, Tusk, Buckingham said he didn’t think it was worth even trying to compete with what had gone before. In a series of mischievous understatements he described how, despite the album being a creative success, the others took against him for his role in making it a, relative, commercial flop.
So, he then decided to look to solo albums for his personal expression. He called his own stuff the “small machine”, where instead of “bringing a script to the actors” he was able to “splash paint on canvass like an abstract artist”. At the end Gerrie asked Buckingham what his favourite Fleetwood Mac album was. The response was, predictably, Tusk. Unsurprisingly for such a thoroughly well-mannered chap, when then asked about his greatest achievement he said it was his children. Edgy stuff this series may not be but with the right guests – Tony Bennett next up looks promising – expect it to provide reliably fascinating chat that focuses on the music.

Things I heard:
Stevie suggested the name "Stephanie" for his instrumental and he said "Yes, dear."
Also, he apparently has explained to Stevie in the plane this tour (lol) that he didn't mean in NGBA never going back to her.
And "Oh Diane" was played at his mother's funeral.

a: ISA.
q: oh diane - who diane was?
a: not a person, just sounded good in song.
q: dynamic between LB and SN / relationship status?
a: convoluted, healthy distance, undercurrent of nostalgia, love, still working on it.
q: his single ambition to achieve?
a: he wants to make sure his kids become all their potential has to offer.
Awww. But I don't know. He'd probably trade one of them for Tusk.

Hey, I'm thrilled to get an Oh Diane mention after all these years. That's quite an achievement. I'm surprised Lindsey isn't pretending he doesn't even know the song.
On the other hand, I hope his mother expressed to him that she liked that tune. Because that's quite a surprise to look down from heaven and see you're being serenaded with Oh Diane of all things. I'd be like, "What the devil??"

Haha, I've had that kind of thing happen before. My internet is terribly slow and unreliable and I think it may have been when I was uploading Stevie's Masterclass episode, IIRC, that 95% of the way through, my internet did its temperamental cutting out thing and I had to start again. It happened three times (and thus two or so days of constant attempts) before I got to 100%, lol.

Thank you! That is one of the best interviews of LB ever. The host did his homework, was a fan (but not over the top), the questions from the audience were good, but I especially liked the acoustic versions of songs, especially The Chain. Also liked the fact that the interview delved into the songwriting aspects of songs like Dreams, and Lindsey's production. Again, thank you for the effort to record and upload!

He could take the Chain on the road for his solo shows, if he played it like that. If he's going to bastardize it like ISA, then no thank you.
I remember him saying that he couldn't remember a thing that Mick contributed to The Chain and he still can't think of anything. But everyone remembers that it all started with John's bass!

no, it's missing the whole guitar solo. it would be worse than Rock Away Blind without the outro.
he needs to add to this version the acoustic guitar solo part (aka formula 1 part), the way he did it backstage at CMT crossroads. then he can do it alone acoustically, and it would be pretty amazing.
and, as you know, some of us love that OMS version of ISA. :p :xoxo:

See, I think The Chain really falls short without the harmonies. To my ears, the melody of the verses is in a cyclical kind of way, very defined by the harmony. In the sense that it's difficult to pinpoint who is even singing the lead line because all of the lines are so dependent on one another. During the chorus, it's not so much the harmony but the echoing of his lines by the girls that adds to the build of the song (along with all of the instrumentation, of course).
The funny thing is, what Lindsey's playing there is really the same thing he plays on his Turner when he does it live with the band. That's just a testament to how well the guitar part stands on it's own - enough to do it justice acoustically, which isn't typical of a lead guitar part.
All of this to say, I think Lindsey & his boys could do an acoustic version of The Chain quite well (I'm envisioning guitar, acoustic bass, and cajon/foot!tambo), but I don't think a completely solo version would work because of the lack of additional voices.

yeah, that's why it sounds different when he sings just his part, because we are so used to hearing the harmonies. and that's why it sounded so good acoustically with LBT, because they were doing the harmonies. and then he did that crazy guitar solo, acoustically, and that part was different from the Turner version.
to me The Chain is really about John's bass line and Lindsey's guitar solo... the rest of it is great, but those 2 things make that song, for me. so if there's no John's bass part, at least i want to have Lindsey's guitar solo. and again, that was so amazing in that CMT extra, and is so missing from the version in this interview, even if i do understand he was just showing the song structure.
sorry, unfortuantely i'm technically challenged so have no idea how to download it and make available to people outside the US but here is CMT acoustic version, if you haven't heard it before - http://www.cmt.com/videos/misc/125812/cmt-crossroads-lindsey-buckingham-little-big-town-extras-the-chain.jhtml

I think the beauty of FM's Chain is the voices. And it's so good when they do it, that it doesn't even sound worthwhile to me when Lindsey, Stevie, Sharon and Lori do it without Christine. You not only need the layers of voices, but you need the variation in tone between the voices to make it work. I think they got it very right with Beautiful Child, but they have never captured it with The Chain. That's why I liked the LBT version with Lindsey so much more than I like it in concert now.
However, as a quite different song which captures something else entirely, I think he could pull it off solo. It's not going to mean what it means with FM, but it explores a different element and I think that's what an acoustic song should do. I don't think it should try to replicate a group's version of the song, but should give you something completely different. Lindsey's raw version did that for me and when he's singing it solo, the chain has been broken. Psychologically, I like that spin on the song.
You know there's a slowed down version of Jolene that's been circulating on the internet and it just made me see how Dolly Parton's voice actually does a disservice to all of her songs. It's funny the little things you can do to give or take gravitas from something.

See, I just don't think that the chain has an independent enough melody line work for a solo voice, regardless of who is singing it or if it's acoustic or not. It's not about replicating the original version, it's just an issue with the melody.
To a much lesser degree, I feel the same way about the chorus to Dreams.

And to me, I can hear all the space that The Chain has for you to move around in, if you do it alone and take out all the harmonies (which when good are not only very good, but superlative, but when bad...). Right now, even when you have four people singing on it, The Chain still sounds kind of monotone to me. So, I'd just as soon have someone explore the solo possibilities, especially if Lindsey put the focus on the ending that he did on Go Insane's.
But I also feel the same way about OMH. I love it. I think the harmonies make the song, but sometimes when I sing it to myself (and I can't sing), I wonder what it could be like with one singer, soaring.
