The Huffington Post UK - By Caroline Frost
Katy Perry has received the support of a rock legend in her message for ex-husband Russell Brand.
Stevie Nicks, celebrated for her own anthems of expression and strong sentiment, pronounces herself full of admiration for Katy Perry’s song ‘Roar’ – an undisguised ode to survival.
“My favorite song right now... I'm so proud of her," says Nicks. "I think that is such a girl power song, and I'm so happy that she's sending out messages to ex-husbands - who needs them?"
Nicks is in London for the premiere of the documentary ‘Stevie Nicks: In Your Dreams’, which charts the making of her most recent album, with producer Dave Stewart.
Recording took place in Nicks’ own rambling house in California, and she was, at first, reluctant to let the cameras follow her for the best part of a year… until she remembered something about the Travelling Wilburys being filmed together for their own documentary.
"You had Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne and George Harrison, there they are and you got to be with him. And, in the blink of an eye, two of them are gone. I thought that was stunning.
"And I thought, what if one of them had taken the vain path, thought 'makeup, hair, a drag,' and hadn't have done it, we wouldn't have that. So I felt we should all do that. We should all make our documentaries for our children, for our fans, for our friends, the people that we love."
The documentary catches Nicks singing closely with her former musical and romantic partner Lindsey Buckingham, with whom she has a famously chequered relationship, but whom she called upon for a moving duet called ‘Soldier’s Angel’.
Dave Stewart, also director of the film, confided that this reunion was the most awkward scene to capture on camera, but Nicks was full of praise for her Fleetwood Mac bandmate, whom she says "is the only person who could have done this".
“I sat down with him in 2011," remembers Nicks, "and I said, 'Do you remember when we joined Fleetwood Mac, how cute we were, how sweet, compassionate, funny we were, and we could walk into a room and be so charming and be our own little power couple? We have to go back to being those two people, or we should never do this again.'
"He looked at me and he nodded his head. And he listened to me."
The proof of the pudding is in the reunited Fleetwood Mac, starting the UK leg of their tour this weekend...
“That entire hour and a half that we spoke back in 2011 is on stage every night," says Nicks now warmly. "And he is a different person, and when we walk out on stage hand in hand, he is listening to me."
http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/09/18/katy-perry-roar-stevie-nicks-in-your-dreams_n_3948261.html
I saw "In Your Dreams" when it first came out, and Lindsey was hardly in the movie at all. So unless they have added scenes to the movie now, Lindsey is in the movie for a total of about 5 minutes. I honestly only remember seeing him in 2 or 3 shots total. I loved the movie over all, but was very disappointed in how little he was actually in the movie.
I guess the awkwardness of their reunion and their conversations did not "translate" well on film.

Maybe Stevie could take a break for a year from touring and IYD activities and teach these young artists to sing the right way with out the bells and whistles of computers, auto-tune,voice morphing and how to write a good song for once.
Stevie always wanted to be a teacher and she will get a chance do it.
I would love to have her as teacher of music.
If I was 17 years old I probably enjoy Katy P.Miley C and others.

Well ... didn't 1975-and-onwards Fleetwood Mac used to get dismissed as shallow, style-over-substance wannabes? "Real" acts wouldn't want to associate with them much either.

I thought about that too.
It's just strange to me that Stevie (I assume) thinks of artists like Katy Perry as being her modern contemporaries, because I find Stevie's material to have so much more integrity, substance and soul than an artist like Katy, whom I place more in the Madonna/Britney/Donna Summer category of music, whereas to me, Stevie is more in the Tori Amos/Joni Mitchell/Johnette Napolitano/Fiona Apple/Neko Case/Alanis Morrisette category of music.
It has always struck me who Stevie isn't talking about.

Think she also mentioned Lana Del Ray as someone she liked when asked this time, IIRC. Also, she mentioned The Civil Wars quite recently when asked if she hears her influence in music today (apparently reminding her of something - 'there's Stevie and Lindsey 30 years ago'). Not sure how much she actually likes them but I'd venture she does. I think maybe in 2011 she only chose one modern artist in a feature entitled 'soundtrack of my life' and that was actually John Mayer (his record Battle Studies in particular). That combined with her apparent liking of Dave Matthews Band and the love she gives to Phillip Phillips (sp?) indicates she still has a fondness for that kind of thing as well as the more top 40 poppy female singers. It's not like one has to only like one genre or dislike manufactured pop in order to appreciate more artistic, guitar-driven or folksy or rock etc music, after all.
But yeah, she certainly was very keen on ET by Katy Perry when that came out and said she actually cried on hearing The One Who Got Away so that's all nothing new, lol.

and your point is? She said nice things about Katy Perry after Katy became the hottest ticket in the country and that is why she got to do the voiceover. Anybody who has really paid attention to all the name drops, and the Kiss Ass Lines (If I were on a desert island I would watch Glee, blah) knows what Stevie is up too. She is extremely smart. She is trying to align herself with young hollywood because guess what-that's how to remain relevant. The Phillip Phillips, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Glee... name drops are all calculating and they work. She has worked behind the scenes to get her music heard.
I cringe when I hear her kissing ass, but it got it her on Glee. Maybe she said something to the right people about liking American Horror Story. Lana Del Rey and Civil Wars are incredibly hot right now and Stevie pays attention.

If she really wanted to name-drop, there are far more credible names she could have dropped than Katy Perry. I believe she is talking about Katy Perry simply because that's who she wants to talk about. I actually don't see what's so unbelievable about that. Stevie has historically had bad taste in most things. Men, movies, books, recreational drugs, etc. This isn't really a massive shock to me. I'll leave her to enjoy what she enjoys. She's old enough to have earned at least that. As long as this doesn't end in an actual collaboration with Katy Perry, I'm a-ok with it.
MFF, it's difficult for me to imagine anyone disliking Neko Case. Have you given her a try yet? This song always seems to do the trick for newcomers to her: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0vk5SGmw3w

Who said anything about credibility? That has nothing to do with it. I think good old Katy Perry was giving Michael Jackson a run for his money in the record's department and is still one of the hottest things around.
Stevie pays attention to trends--what's hot and what's not. She is fighting for her band and her legacy. The way to do that is to be embraced by youth and it's working. Without all the networking, Fleetwood Mac wouldn't be able to fill up a high school gym.

But there are artists who have achieved a similar level of popularity that don't fall so squarely in the "guilty pleasure" category. Adele, Florence and the Machine, Lana Del Ray, etc. I enjoy a handful of Katy Perry songs too, but I can assure you that nobody of ticket-buying age is reading this article going "Wow! This woman likes Katy Perry! She's just like me! Huzzah! I'm off to buy an album and concert ticket!" If it really was her goal to create interest in her band with younger audiences, there are better names to choose.
Her Crossroads with LA is something I could see being viewed as more of a shrewd career move. But then, it's equally likely she just likes that band, too. I suppose nobody knows what's really going on in Stevie's mind, but when she says she likes something that I think is crap, I think the likely scenario is that she's being honest. She waxed on about Wide Sargasso Sea, after all, and that's a pretty obscure piece of crap.

No, no, no. This is about Stevie doing something with Katy Perry like a duet or being mentioned by Katy Perry in an interview, not people buying records because Stevie likes Katy Perry. She is trying to network with the young rock and roll community in the hopes because being mentioned by them or doing things will help her in some way. She knows how to work it. She is very savvy. She is already starting on Lana...
P.S. you don't know the things some other artists do to network and get their music played.
What she is doing is not unusual but she has been extremely successful.

Yeah, ok. I just don't buy it though. I can't see Stevie saying something like "I like Katy Perry" as some jaded calculated career move. It's extremely easy for me to imagine that she genuinely just likes Katy Perry (many do, as you've said) and was answering a question honestly. I still don't see why you find the idea so absurd. I don't know what goes on in the hearts and minds of recording artists, but I see no reason to assume that this particular statement was purely motivated by networking.

I wouldn't be surprised if Stevie likes some of Christine's pop ditties, and they're nothing like what she would write or probably sing. Not saying I personally like Katy Perry anywhere near as much as Christine McVie (or at all), but an artist can like artists very different from themselves, it does happen. Sometimes they might even prefer the difference just to not overdose on one kind of stimulation. I remember on the Tusk documentary Stevie said that when she was writing "Angel" she intended it to be light and fun and wanted it to contrast with the usual heavy intense stuff she usually wrote. Sometimes variety is just nice.
Also, some people just do not think pop music is anything to feel guilty or embarrassed about. That's just their philosophy. They may like Bob Dylan and Britney Spears both, because they fulfill and please them in different ways, and for them there's no dissonance to struggle with because they accept that that's okay. I don't like Katy Perry, but I sure did crank up "Call Me Maybe" my share of times last year, and maybe I should've been embarrassed but ... I really wasn't, because to me that's a waste of time.
I wouldn't be surprised to know that Stevie (and Mick) finds it wiser in some political way to praise young people instead of condemning them for not being as good as the music of yesteryear. If rock'n'roll is essentially the anthem of youthful rebellion, then "Get off my lawn you ****ing whipper snappers" is maybe a little tough to justify (not that newness is the only reason to dislike Katy Perry, but it's certainly a contrast between her and Stevie). But still, I don't think Stevie would've said she liked the song if she actually didn't like the song. She sometimes does criticize things about "nowadays" after all.
Plus I think in another thread recently someone posted a quote of her where she said she wasn't very in touch with current music, so there you are, top 40's just more accessible and everything else has moved into their own niches and are harder to find, especially if you're internet-challenged which Stevie Nicks seems to be.
I won't defend Twilight  But I'm not surprised it's up her alley.

No, I don't think she is sincere. Young pop artists are the way to get press and she has let loose a bunch of sound bites over the last 5 years.
She is very smart and kissed the right ass. Because of her intelligence, Fleetwood Mac is enjoying a resurgence.
I wonder when she will tell the press that she would love to be stuck on a desert island with Miley Cyrus because she has the voice of an angel. Or, "on the 8th day, God created Lana Del Rey!" Or Justin Beiber "makes me all puffy down there."
She is a fighter! And the rest of Fleetwood Mac should be thankful, because other artists and their managers are doing worse things to be heard.

I don't know about Katy Perry specifically, but she has to sincerely like at least some of the artists she's name-checked over the years. I've heard her refer to herself as a teeny-booper, and at least twice she has mentioned staying up all night watching videos when such channels are available. Frankly, I would find it a little strange for someone who has been a professional entertainer for 40 years not to like anything currently going on in the industry.

I'm glad now that Katy Perry is getting attention on TV now then Miley Cyrus .
I got tired hearing Miley,Miley ,Miley on TV.
At lease Katy did not go loco yet like Miley is doing to herself now.
What Stevie have to say about Lady Gaga.
I have not heard Lady Gaga in the news lately.

Well I'm sure Stevie initiated the Katy Perry thing. God only knows how many little notes she sent people. She sends them to Mariah and to the people on Glee and then is supposedly writing Leah Michelle and the guy from American Horror Story (Glee). Talk about networking. Woman is smart as hell. Got her on Glee and American Horror Story...

Entertainment Weekly has Katy Perry on the cover this week, and the interview mentions Stevie quite a lot. Stevie and Katy were staying at the same hotel in London (Johnny Depp was there too), and Stevie invited her to have tea. It took some doing to coordinate their schedules, but they did meet up and Stevie gave her a gold crescent necklace and a handwritten note. Katy now tells people that Stevie is a Katycat.

Looks like our girl is really working it  Katy would seem the least risky one of the youngsters for Mama to snuggle up to...
