Shoreworld: The Sunday Blues – City Folklore

“Jokes On You” demonstrates the band’s classic rock roots from the get-go. Miller handles vocals on this radio-friendly cut and her influential Christine McVie form is seamless. Her mix of melodic harmony tone and lead vocal doubling makes this track rich and luxurious.

[Article about Christine's cousin Dave Reece]

http://www.andoveradvertiser.co.uk/news/regional/basingstoke/10765937.Tadley_guitarist_who_has_played_with_the_likes_of_Eric_Clapton_and_Peter_Green_releases_cha rity_album/

A TADLEY guitarist, who has played with some of the musical greats, is today releasing a new album worldwide – and part of the profits will go to a local charity.

Dave Reece, above, of Crookham Close, is releasing rock album ‘As we stood before tomorrow’ through label Acorn Music.

Dave, who is a guitarist, songwriter and private guitar teacher, has had success with his previous album ‘Clown for the day’, from which tracks received international airplay and were used for a BBC documentary.

He has previously performed with Eric Clapton and Peter Green, founder of Fleetwood Mac – the band which Dave’s cousin Christine McVie used to sing with.

He said his latest album, which is available to download online, is influenced by songwriters including Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.

He added: “From the age of four, I knew that all I wanted to do was play the guitar, and at 17 I became a professional musician and songwriter.”

A total of 25 per cent of profits from sales of the album will be donated to Wessex Cancer Trust, a charity which provides local cancer care support services for patients and families living with cancer across Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, and beyond. The charity offers both practical and emotional support.

From a Drew Rowsome blog review of the book, The Desperates

http://drewrowsome.blogspot.com/2014/01/love-is-nasty-but-hilarious-bitch-greg.html

The mother notes that Chatelaine is her favourite magazine, "It's for the more sophisticated woman," and we immediately know exactly who she is. Edmund's decorating and fashion choices speak volumes while Joel and Binny's sexual and musical - Christine McVie over "goat lady" Stevie Nicks - explicate exactly who they are. Of course the mother does also lapse into one-liner drag speak - "Do you like my wig? Do I look like Ann-Margaret or a dying clown?" - but by then she is family and we indulge her.

[Excerpt from a blog post about Gomez]

http://asidesbsidesandseasides.blogspot.com/2014/02/gomez-b-sides.html

There haven't been as many great songwriters in a band since Fleetwood Mac. (Christine McVie being the best in the bunch, you Nicks loving fools.) They also put on an excellent show. I saw them for almost every tour. ...except the one where they opened for The Fray. I just couldn't bear to see them open for one of the ****tiest bands ever. I... I just couldn't. It was just one of those injustices in the industry. The better, less popular band opening for a ****ty new band, playing stadiums after having a major radio hit. It just isn't right. ...and The Fray have an album full of the same Coldplay rip-off song re-written over and over again. May they drown in a fire.

From a Quietus interview with Status Quo, March 19, 2014

http://thequietus.com/articles/14704-status-quo-interview-piledriver-reissue

FR: We were listening to a lot of Chicken Shack at the time, which were Stan Webb on guitar and Christine McVie – though she was Christine Perfect at the time – of early Fleetwood Mac, Taste, coupled with all the Little Richard and some of that 50s stuff we drifted through. We would sit by the side of the stage and Chicken Shack would start, “2... 3... 4... dunk du dunk du dunk du dunk” and an hour and a half later they’re still doing it. And we’re thinking, “This is ****ing great! Why aren’t we doing this?”

[Excerpt from an article on Martha Velez] Tampa Bay Times, by Michelle Miller

http://www.tampabay.com/news/humaninterest/singers-storied-career-leads-her-to-write-musical-theater-debut/2172787

Martha Velez has lived a storied life.

"I've been so, so blessed," she said.

Velez reflected on a career that has unfolded with a series of serendipitous turns — a folk singing stint with the Gaslight Singers in the mid 1960s, a stint in the Broadway musical Hair, a recording a blues-rock gig with then-session musicians Eric Clapton and Christine McVie, and a handful of albums including Escape From Babylon produced by Bob Marley. She landed in Los Angeles after the release of her 1975 album, American Heartbeat, and ended up with a regular role on Falcon's Crest and a small part in the 1993 movie Father Hood starring Patrick Swayze and Halle Berry.

I didn't realize she retired before joining Fleetwood Mac. So she's retired 3 times in the past 45 years- she retired completely 1970, retired from touring in 1990, and retired from Fleetwood Mac in 1998. I wonder how long she'll stay with us this time?

[This is an excerpt from an article on rock music through the generations]

The Star, Bill TaylorSpecial to the Star, Published on Mon Jun 23 2014

http://www.thestar.com/life/2014/06/23/rock_music_cements_bond_between_generations.html

It was Nov. 20, 1970, at Durham University in northeast England.

I had a friend who booked bands for gigs around the region. This was a students’ event. I helped carry their gear and sat in on their sound-check.

Christine McVie had recently joined. She may even have spoken to me. I seem to recall her saying fondly, “Get out of my way!”

The band’s back on tour, featuring the “long-awaited return” of ... Christine McVie. But with the three-figure price of decent tickets, I won’t be at the ACC in October. Let someone else carry their amps.

My hairdresser, a Rolling Stones fanatic, tells of a client saying how pathetic it is that the Stones keep touring.

My stylist retorted, “What’s really pathetic is that there’s no one younger who can do what they do.”

Words to live by. Word to chisel on your tombstone.

It’s not only Fleetwood Mac and the Stones who are still on a roll. This has become a retirement industry. I sent my trainer to see George “Bad to the Bone” Thorogood at Massey Hall last month. It was love at first riff, “and he’s almost as old as you!”

Yeah, thanks for that.

Do audiences still hold up lighters or is that passé? M-m-m-my generation — as The Who’s Roger Daltrey continues, at 70, to sing it — predates even those days.

I have a postcard reproducing the poster for a “happy-go-lucky summer revue” opening in the English resort of Blackpool on June 23, 1961 — 53 years ago today. Top of the bill was crooner Frankie Vaughan.

I saw that show. It wasn’t rock ’n’ roll but I liked it.

I’d just been to my first genuine rock concert: the Shadows, Cliff Richard’s backing group, but stars in their own right. Guitarist Hank Marvin inspired a lot of young wannabes: Neil Young, Jeff Beck, Randy Bachman ...

The Shadows played a one-night stand in Blackpool. I badgered my parents into taking me, though they fretted about riotous teenagers. In fact, the kids behaved better than my mother (who was 43) when we saw Frankie Vaughan.

As sex symbols go, Vaughan was a watered-down Tom Jones but still regarded as risqué, with a high kick that had women old enough to be his grandma shrieking.

He’d don top hat and tails for his “signature” number: “If there’s anyone in doubt who would like to try me out, give me the moonlight, give me the girl and leave the rest (wink) to (leer) me.” Steam rising from the orchestra stalls ...

He made his entrance from the lobby, jogging down the aisle as it dawned on those closest that he was fleetingly within reach.

We weren’t, thank heavens, at the end of the row because my mother leapt to her feet, hollering, “Oh my god, there he is!”

She denied this for the rest of her life, but my dad and I had the evidence of our eyes and ears. The term hadn’t yet been coined but Mom had the makings of a groupie!

Another musical legend (sort of) for the guru to share with his disciple. Too bad I don’t have any Frankie Vaughan vinyl.

http://thechronicleherald.ca/artslife/1220239-arsenault-glorious-glasto-has-been-stirring-up-brits-since-70

One thing that isn’t so special is obsessing about the weather for festival weekend. Worthy Farm in Somerset has been known to become a mammoth mud pit, but the great unwashed rarely seem bothered.

Even normally pampered rock stars get in the swing of things. Christine McVie, who recently rejoined Fleetwood Mac, has said she wouldn’t be opposed to playing the farm as long as boots were provided — quite a statement coming from someone who seems classy enough to be on Downton Abbey.

Who Am I?

8. J.K. Rowling? No. Christine McVie? Yes. I know I said I'd never tour with Fleetwood Mac again, but I've conquered my fear of flying and need a break from all the gardening I've been doing for the past 15 years in the backyard of my castle. Not that I won't be nervous when the tour starts later this month, but things will be fine by the time we get to Saskatoon Nov. 12.
