WOO HOO... You Know I love Buckingham Nicks.

Here's a list of all the songs on their one and only album.

1. Crying In The Night (Nicks)
2. Stephanie - Instrumental (Buckingham)
3. Without A Leg To Stand On (Buckingham)
4. Crystal (Nicks)
5. Long Distance Winner (Nicks)
6. Don't Let Me Down Again (Buckingham)
7. Django (Lewis)
8. Races Are Run (Nicks)
9. Lola (My Love) (Buckingham)
10. Frozen Love (Nicks, Buckingham)

There's not a bad song on this album. I can listen to it from beginning to end and not skip around. Favorites are Crying in the Night, Stephanie, Without A Leg To Stand On, and of course Frozen Love. I still cannot believe the executives at Polydor did not realize what amazing talent they had signed and dropped them. I bet someone one got a boot up their butt when they figured out they had Stevie and Lindsey signed and then let them go.

Happy anniversary, B/N, you lovely album. Please don't come in a midlifecrisis. Stay where you are and what you are: on vinyl and a legacy. I love you as a hard to get overlooked brilliant nugget of rockhistory. You don't need to be on CD. Or in iTunes

Picked up my copy late 1977 after getting into Rumours and loving I Don't Want to Know, Second Hand News, The Chain, Gold Dust Woman, Dreams, Go Your Own Way as my favorites. After that, picked up the Fleetwood Mac album and then all the pre B/N Albums and then Walter Egan's stuff. Loved the hunt back in the day.
Bring on the reissue!

OMG! Everyone I know and NEVER knew loved FM is going nutsy cuckoo over BN lately! Awesome!!!!! I do believe we just might actually get it, don't know how or what or when but I feel good about it. I read something in the last few days about Stevie saying that if she could go back and sing the songs on BN again she would sing them so much stronger because when they were recording it she didn't think her voice was very good so she was really only concentrating on backing LB at the time. BUT, the very vulnerability for which she would become known is what makes her so damned spectacular on this record! I mean listen to Crying in the Night (above). Need I say more?

I want a reissue, badly, at times! BUT, I have to admit that I am sometimes torn on reissuing BN and messing with such a "brilliant nugget of rock history" myself! I too love BN, and I also have a pristine copy I purchased in 1975, while I was still listening to Heroes are Hard to Find.

I was a freshman in college and my boyfriend from home and I had finished unpacking and moving in to our dorms. We walked down to Main Street and went into the coolest little record store. My boyfriend was a musician so we were always looking for new music, and luckily we walked out with Buckingham Nicks. I remember the little hippie velvet clothing boutiques, too, and of course, falling in love with it all! When we got back to his dorm room, we put the record on immediately and plopped down on the bed...OMG! We knew we were hearing something very special right from the git go...I will never forget listening to that record over and over while it rained and we made love...hmmm, yeah, it would be fine with me if it just keeps it's place in rock history too...:o

That's it. Thank you for sharing your experience. The record gathered so many stories in 40 years of listeners that appreciate it for what it is, especially being a pretty hard to get vinyl album, that it has it's own legacy now. After all these years, I want it to be the identity it is, and not a 7 dollar download.

You're right...you've convinced me completely. Btw, I married that boy and we're still married...with all the ups and downs, wondering each year if we'll make it another...Love is such a simple notion, I don't know why it's so hard to hold on to and nurture? But, I do know that no matter what happens...that will always be one of my very sweetest memories.

Thanks all for sharing your feelings about the vinyl. However, I don't think a CD release (with hopefully some bonus tracks) will ever cheapen or take away from your memories or the originality that made this album awesome. It will only enhance the experience for those who choose to participate, create new generations of fans, and give a much deserved gift to those who have believed in the power of Buckingham Nicks.

Anyway, I hoped this thread could stay focused on discussing the album and not get into the arguments about the potential CD reissue or the maybe tour or any of the other what if rabbits that tend to get chased. :sorry:

The Sound City Movie

She was that kind of lady
Times are hard

Desperation and desire. The key elements to rock stardom.

And Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham had both.

She’s back in town
And she’s looking around

From Phoenix to San Francisco to Hollywood.

That’s where you had to end up. You could start anywhere. But if you wanted to make it, you had to come to L.A. And what you found there surprised you. No city center. No three piece suits. Just a bunch of suburbanites just like you. And in the hallowed halls of recording studios, in the darkness, was where not only the sound of America was created, but the world. There was magic in studios. But it really didn’t begin until the band plugged in and started to play.

And from the hinterlands to Sound City was a very long journey. As AC/DC once sang, it’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll.

But not anymore. Five year olds can wail on their iPads. Record in GarageBand and then their parents can implore the rest of us to buy the production on iTunes. We’re inundated with dreck. And the ultimate desire is to get rich.

That used to be the byproduct. The goal was to REACH EVERYBODY!

Yup, you could be recording in an industrial park, but if you got it right people could be singing your song not only next week, but forevermore. Chances were slim. As were opportunities. So you made the most of them. You only had one shot…to change the world…and your life.

It’s not about technology, but people. In the almost unwatchable last third of this movie Trent Reznor, Josh Homme and Dave Grohl create music utterly riveting. With one hand on his laptop, Trent’s not worried about the tech, but the sound. It always comes down to the sound.

And the songs.

Without both, you’ve got nothing.

We knew what Sound City was. Because we read the credits. More than once. They were not in tiny CD type, they were big, in the center of the gatefold, on the inner sleeve. We not only knew the studios, but the guitar strings. Everything about the musicians and their music, because the music touched us, because it changed our lives.

And it hasn’t been that way in a very long time.

Because everybody’s not shooting high enough. They don’t need it enough. There wasn’t a single person in Dave Grohl’s studio telling him all that new material sucked, from Stevie Nicks to Lee Ving to Paul McCartney. Looked like they were having fun, but you don’t want to hear a single song ever again.

Then there’s “Lithium.”

Nirvana was hungry. They had to get it right. The songs didn’t need to be good, they needed to be great. And some things never change. If you’re still that great, everybody will know. And if not, you’re in an endless circle jerk thinking that everybody cares, when they don’t.

So you can skip the first few minutes. Until Dave pulls up at the studio.

And they tell the story of Buckingham Nicks and Fleetwood Mac.

Ooh, brings chills.

Mick Fleetwood is looking for a cheap studio.

And Keith Olsen pulls up the Buckingham Nicks album. Recorded there. At Sound City.

Do you know “Crying In The Night”?

Check it out here:

Buckingham Nicks – Crying In The Night

It’s the best Fleetwood Mac song you’ve never heard. Better than anything the band has done since “Rumours.” But because musicians are insane and their own worst enemies, it and the album it came from has never been released on CD. Even though the vinyl record populated baby boomers’ dorm rooms back in the seventies, when they bought that first Fleetwood Mac album with Stevie and Lindsey and needed MORE!

And when the sound comes out of the speakers, you TINGLE! Because it’s the essence. Music played by people who NEED IT! Buckingham and Nicks were always gonna break through, because they were never gonna give up. That’s what it takes, more than talent, PERSEVERANCE! You pay your dues, you get kicked around, and if you hang around long enough you make it.

You’ve got to be playing so long you get lucky.

And Buckingham and Nicks do. They’re picked up and rescued by Mick Fleetwood and the rest of the Mac. Look at the photos. They were so young, so skinny, so CUTE!

They were our rock stars.

Like Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers. Who were known by everybody BEFORE “Damn The Torpedoes” and “Refugee.” It’s not about everybody knowing your name, but a track so indelible they’ve got to play it again and again, that they can’t forget.

And yes, these tracks were all cut on the Neve.

But they would have been hits if they were cut ANYWHERE!

Don’t forget, the even bigger “Rumours” was cut up north, at the Record Plant. Studios aren’t everything.

But people are.

It was a different era. We were all paying attention. And if you got it right, you were as big and rich as anybody in the world. And you only answered to yourself. THAT’S why everybody wanted to be a rock star, the FREEDOM!

And it was hard work.

But it was worth it.

But then MTV made it more about looks than music. And the Internet blew the system apart. And if you don’t think this is a good thing, you’re never going to make it.

We need more documentaries like this. That illustrate how it once was. It’s like discovering a Dead Sea Scroll.

The arc is bad. It’s two movies in one. The story of a studio and the story of a board. Great moviemakers, like great writers, know it can only be about one thing. Add too much, even if it’s great on its own, and you muddy the waters, you ruin it. An expert knows sometimes you’ve got to leave the best things out.

But when they show what it was like back in the seventies, with the girls and the dope and the hope, all tied together by the music, you just want to crank it.

And you realize you can’t make it. That it’s only the special few who deserve our accolades.

And this movie features more than one.

And when the soundtrack blasts, you say THAT’S IT!

I agree...I wish they'd put out a legit cd version of the original album. I would love for some bonus tracks but at this point seems less necessary than releasing the original album on cd. Sorry...I still don't buy the missing or damaged masters...a number of people have put together decent sounds versions based on the vinyl...you'd think those in the industry could put together a decent sounding official version.

Not holding my breath... I think around 1987 I first heard BN was going to be released on disc! Now it's funny that it's more likely to be re-released...on vinyl again!

I agree on the 1987 mention.

I love to see a vinyl release. My turntable will be spinning and my tone arm will be ready to get dropped on to the virgin vinyl.

Plus I dont need a magnifying glass to look at the tiny artwork on a CD.

No, I don't want it on a cd. It would totally spoil the magig and myth's that comes with this album. Let me play my worn out digititzed version of the album. With all the cracks and itches and ket me cherish the look of the gatefold when I took out this album out of my recordcloset....

Thanks for the heads up!!

Here's the BN part:

“I was doing some dates with producer Keith Olsen. One day he said to me, ‘Waddy, I’m bringing this couple down from San Francisco. You gotta meet them, and you gotta play with them. They’re great singers, great songwriters. The guy’s a really good guitar player, but he needs to play with someone like you.’

“That was Keith’s intention, bringing me into it. I met Stevie and Lindsey, we dug each other, and we went off and did the record. Moving to LA was a bit of a shock to them. Lindsey saw me as a compassionate person, and we got along. He was a great fingerpicker – he still is, he’s an amazing fingerpicker! – and me being a flatpicker, we had a lot to teach each other and a lot to learn from each other.

“I would say that, at the time, Lindsey needed to learn how to let somebody else be there with him. In Keith Olsen’s mind, I was the right guy for that because I knew about the give and take. I wouldn’t overstep the perimeter, so to speak.”

The second single from the Buckingham Nicks album was the song that was recorded first and is the opening track, "Crying in the Night".

The single was released in February of 1974 and the "B" side was "Without a Leg to Stand On".
It was released again in June of 1976 after the duo joined Fleetwood Mac and their popularity soared.
The "B" side on the second release was the beautiful instrumental by Lindsey titled, "Stephanie".

Here are two versions of "Stephanie", the original from the album and a recent version performed on Lindsey's tour in 2012,
the first time a Buckingham Nicks song had been performed live since "Don't Let Me Down Again" in 2004 on the Say You Will Fleetwood Mac tour.

Lost Gems: “Crying in the Night” by Buckingham Nicks
by Jim Pace

Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks have always been that good looking couple from high school who we all thought would be together forever, but never made it past senior year. We always root for that couple. If they can make it, then maybe we can hold on to some of our unrealistic, romantic dreams a little while longer.

They first met at a party where Stevie saw Lindsey sitting alone, playing “California Dreaming.” She thought he was “beautiful,” so she walked over and sang the harmony, which impressed Lindsey. Soon after, her family moved to Chicago and they would not see each other for two years when they met up in college, and Lindsey asked Stevie to join his band, Fritz.

Fritz was a popular local band that would go on to open for Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, CCR and Chicago, but they couldn’t secure a record deal. Frustrated, Lindsey and Stevie quit the band in 1971 and forged ahead as a duo.

Lindsey used his inheritance to buy an Ampeg 4-track tape machine; they locked themselves in a small office space at a coffee plant where his father worked, and recorded all night, every night for about a year.

They recorded seven songs and headed to Los Angeles to score a record deal. They were turned down by every record company in town except for Polydor Records, who eventually signed the duo in 1973.

Keith Olsen, who was Curt Boettcher’s whiz kid engineer and collaborator, was brought in to produce the album. He showed up with a gaggle of session players, including legendary drummer Jim Keltner, Waddy Wachtel on guitar and Elvis Presley’s famed TCB band. But make no mistake, the album is dominated by Lindsey Buckingham‘s unique guitar sounds and the duo’s strong vocals. They were seasoned pros by the time they recorded their debut record and it shows.

What makes Buckingham Nicks special, however, are the songs. ”Crying in The Night,” which has Stevie already warning Lindsey about the dangers of other women, could have been the lead track on the album Fleetwood Mac. Buckingham’s “Without a Leg to Stand On” would have felt right at home on Rumours, while “Don’t Let Me Down Again,” is a long time Fleetwood Mac concert staple. Nicks’ “Crystal” packs a bigger wallop here than it does on the Mac version, and “Races Are Run” is Stevie’s first kiss-off song, a mean little middle finger to her old Fritz bandmates. This album could have been titled Rumours, the Prequel.

The critics loved the record, but the early sales figures were poor and Polydor dropped the duo. Within weeks they were living in Richard Dashut’s house; Stevie began cleaning Keith Olsen’s apartment and waitressing to make ends meet, whereas Lindsey raised some cash, touring with Don Everly. Meanwhile, they began recording a second Buckingham Nicks album. The songs included such Fleetwood Mac hits as “Rhiannon,” “Monday Morning,” and “Landslide.”

Fate stepped in when Mick Fleetwood stepped into Sound City Studios, looking for a place to record the next Fleetwood Mac album. He was also looking for a new guitar player to replace Bob Welch. Olsen played Fleetwood a copy of the Buckingham Nicks’ track ”Frozen Love” to demonstrate the studio’s and his capabilities. Fleetwood loved the guitar work and offered Buckingham the gig but had no interest in Nicks (good call, Mick).

Buckingham told him they were a package deal. After talking it over with John and Christine McVie, they agreed to let them both join. They rehearsed for a month, recorded the Fleetwood Mac album in three months and went on the road. By the end of 1975 they were superstars.

Before the venom, the affairs and the mountains of cocaine, there was Buckingham Nicks. Their sole record has never been released in any digital format; it’s a “classic” album we’re not sick of yet, like your old high school sweetheart, showing up after so many years, looking exactly the same, without the baggage, without thirty years of life’s bruises. Still fresh-faced, filled with hope, dreams of the future, before everyone went their own way.

And you had nothing but time.

Nice details about the Alabama / Buckingham Nicks connection, with only a couple of errors. (TUSK-a-loos-a??)

Buckingham Nicks

Buckingham Nicks was a California-based music duo made up of guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and vocalist Stevie Nicks. Their sole 1973 album earned little airplay, except on Birmingham's WJLN-FM, which aired "progressive/underground rock" in the evening hours.

The duo played three times in Birmingham. They opened for Mountain and Poco on their first two visits and cultivated a secure fan base in the area. Meanwhile, Keith Olsen, owner of Sound City studio in Los Angeles, played "Frozen Love" to Mick Fleetwood to demonstrate the qualities of the recording studio. When Bob Welch left the band, Fleetwood inquired about bringing Buckingham on board as his replacement. Buckingham refused to leave Nicks behind, and they accepted the invitation on December 31, 1974. In an interview, Nicks said of accepting Fleetwood's offer: "We could join Fleetwood Mac or we could move to Birmingham, Alabama."

Just days later, Birmingham promoters contacted Buckingham Nicks agent and invited the pair back to Alabama to headline shows at Boutwell Auditorium on January 28 and Tuscaloosa on January 29. Buckingham recalled that "We went to Birmingham and discovered we'd sold out an auditorium. Just blew our minds because we were totally unknown in L.A., couldn't get a gig at a club or anywhere, and here were six thousand people out there going nuts!." He told Rolling Stone that the shows allowed the band, with Gary "Hoppy" Hodges on drums and Tom Moncrieff on bass, to go out "in style".

Buckingham's 1979 composition, "Tusk" (ostensibly shorthand for "Tuscaloosa") was recorded in Dodger Stadium with the University of Southern California's marching band. It is performed by the University of Alabama's Million Dollar Band at Alabama Crimson Tide football games in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

The Buckingham Nicks album was aired in its entirety as one of the first full-album features on WZRR-FM "Rock 99" in 1989.

I've read a couple of things that say Buckingham/Nicks is going to be released on CD and swear Lindsey and Stevie both said that'll happen. When though? Or will it ever?

I'd take that with a pinch of salt. They've been saying that for the last 12-15 years. Luckily I have a WAV download of Buckingham Nicks which is sourced from the master tapes (as opposed to a transfer from vinyl).
It's sound stunning! :)

Crap. It's out of stock on Amazon.

Anybody know of any other trustworthy sites in the states that might have a cassette copy? That's not gonna cost a ton of money. (over $40)

I have a cassette copy (I think...may have sold it), but it sounds a lot worse than what's out on the net. Point being don't waste your money on 30+ year old cassette if you're only buying it for listening.

 um they can keep it.
I don't care how "rare" it is.

Bad enough that my usual site is selling the Penguin album for the very affordable price of $50.
No import just the album itself.

I recently came into some extra money and I want to expand my cassette and cd collection.

I found a cassette copy on Amazon listed as Used- Very Good. It's priced at $34.50 plus $3.99 shipping. Hope this helps! :)

How did you aquire that? I would love to hear the master tape. I have several albums, all pressed in different places and I swear there is something the matter with a couple of them. They seem to go in and out of tune, like a warble, towards the label. All the vinyl is flat and clean. I have a cassette, but the quality isn't good anymore. Anyway, do you share?;)

A very cool docu indeed...

On topic: the Buckingham Nicks album cover was featured today on the website of Dutch newspaper: Algemeen Dagblad www.ad.nl as part of a series of most sexy album-covers....I thought it was cool and was surprised the editors of the paper knew about it ...

Why don't you or anybody else make me an offer I can't refuse on my perfect condition gatefold B/N album that I bought in 1978.

I obtained a downloaded copy of this album several months ago. Couldn't get into it. I liked maybe 2/3 tracks (Long Distance Winner, Frozen Love and Crystal) and then didn't listen to it again for several weeks.

Being a fan of Fleetwood Mac's, and especially Stevie Nicks' music I figured I should give this album another shot so a fair while after the first listen I played the album again and I am so glad I did because I love it! I've been playing it a lot ever since. Favourite tracks are the ones mentioned above plus Without A Leg To Stand On, Don't Let Me Down Again, Races Are Run and Lola (My Love).
All of the songs are really good, but those are the ones I often replay.

I recently bought this on vinyl and just love that it's part of my collection.
I agree with those who want this released onto CD. I probably wouldn't buy it since I already own 2 versions, but I think it would bring the album to a lot of people's attention and fans of SN and LB would appreciate it, plus it could bring them many new fans too.

The first time I heard Crystal was actually in the film Practical Magic and I think I prefer that version, but the original BN version is an extremely close second.

Do you guys realise that there is a copy of this album out there that has come straight from the master tapes (not a vinyl transfer)? Do a bit of research on the net and you'll probably come across it as a download in the FLAC format.

I think that's as close as you're going to get to an official release CD and/or an official download release (iTunes etc) at the moment.

I would suggest that you find the Album online, or if you know of a vintage record store( if there are any of them left) and buy it..... if you don't have a record player find one of those too..
The Album is so much better than my copy tape/Cd does. It sounds unbelievable, even the crackle and pops of the vinyl.
...but I'd still buy a remasted /relaunch/expanded CD of the record in less than a beat of my tale, tale, heart......
