"Stevie Nicks: In Your Dreams" Due Out as Digital Download on July 1

Thu, 20 Jun 2013 11:45:44

Virgil Films will offer a digital download release of one of the musical cinematic events of the season, Stevie Nicks: In Your Dreams, which is being issued on the heels of the film's recent successful theatrical run. Starting July 1 fans will be able to download a version directly from the filmmakers (Stevie Nicks and Dave Stewart) at inyourdreamsmovie.com.

This exclusive download will feature never-before-seen bonus footage from the film. Stevie Nicks: In Your Dreams will also make its VOD premiere through cable and digital retailers across the country on July 1.

The doc is an intimate portrait of Stevie Nicks, the Grammy-winning artist and member of legendary rock band Fleetwood Mac, as she creates an album with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame. Co-produced and co-directed by Nicks and Stewart, the film goes behind the scenes as Nicks and Stewart embark on a musical journey to write and record the critically acclaimed album In Your Dreams.

Why just opted for a digital release in the first place, at least give people a choice  im sure the majority of fans would much prefer to buy the DVD rather via iTunes or whatever!!

LOL ..Actually I really don't get it:o, so if you purchase the digital download you can only watch it via your boring little computer screen?? If so, how ridiculous!! I hate iTunes and refuse to have it on my computer, & not to sound too dramatic but I would be heartbroken if I never get to see The Making of IYD's not to mention all the fun bonus footage..

I think they got tired of us fans fussing and beaching about when IYD will get released on DVD and the digital way is the fastest and the cheap way to get it released.

I know It sucks.

Do you not have an HDMI cable to connect your computer to your TV? Honestly, I sometimes use my laptop as a DVD player via a HDMI cable when I want very clear audio & video (my Macbook provides both better than my stand-alone DVD player). These cables are cheap, I got mine off the internet for less than $10.

Apple TV does the exactly same thing as an HDMI cable, except it is wireless (cost is about $100). So you can stream audio/video through your phone, tablet, or computer without having to deal with cables. The end of physical CDs & DVDs doesn't have to be bad news, folks. It can actually mean added comfort & convenience. :)

I'm always slow to adopt new technologies. I'd love a DVD of this. But I have friends who express genuine confusion over the idea that DVDs are still manufactured and sold in this day and age. I can't begrudge the filmmakers for opting out of a technology that is essentially obsolete, annoying though it seems.

This whole discussion is familiar to me from back in the VHS --> DVD days. At one time most movies were put out in both formats, then slowly they weren't anymore. My family went "Yargh! We don't have a DVD player! They could at least give us the option!" but eventually everyone just got DVD players, enjoyed the new technology, and forgot they were ever even upset about it.

Anyway, I'm excited for the new footage but kind of annoyed at the prospect of buying the whole movie again! That's what I get for being overly keen, eh? ;)

Nothing is uniform now, so I think it is premature to start phasing out the old equipment, not until everything can stream everywhere and everything can be copied for back up purposes.

I have the new technologies. My Kindle Fire and Roku are attached to my tv. I have a mac book pro and ipad and I took the picture with my iphone. The problem is, with compatibility, exclusivity and DRM restrictions not everything plays nicely with one another and I don't like having my media locked up. I also don't like having to solve what is basically a science equation just to figure out how to hear or see something.

My car has a hard drive. The old model let me load onto a hard drive from a smart card. The new car streams via blue tooth, but only loads to the hard drive from a compact disc. So, I can stream music from the iphone, but if I want to put it on the car's hard drive, I use a CD and sometimes licensing restrictions won't let me copy from a CD to the hard drive. I have Seeds We Sow the album on my car hard drive, but I cannot get Sleeping Around the Corner a bonus single on there, because I bought it separately somewhere and it has DRM that limits how I can copy it.

The manufacturers are holding the new technology back, because they won't work together (and also because the content creators don't want us to copy and put up a fuss every time they try to make out lives easier). VHS won out over betamax (though I still have both). Blu-ray won out over HDD (never had HDD).

We need some universality in streaming, downloading and copying in the cloud. Until then, a hard copy is preferable, not because I'm old-fashioned, but because it works everywhere.

I don't like itunes. I don't like Apple restrictions on media. I had all of my music on itunes for a long time. I don't want to go back. I have some tv series on itunes (most recently Game of Thrones) but I really want to stay away from it. Hopefully, this Virgil IYD download will be something we can copy and then I'll have IYD on DVD. With bonus features!

But everything is playable on the computer, isn't it? Maybe I'm wrong, actually. As I said, I'm slow on the techno uptake. As I understand it, though, there is that level of uniformity at the very least. And the computer can be hooked up to a TV without much fuss or cost, if the larger screen is your bag. I think you make a lot of great points which I'm going to take on board the next time I try and articulate my love of the good-ol-DVD to a (arguably) more forward-thinking friend. But I also think you're overstating the complexity and incompatibility issue. DVDs only ever play in DVD players, and certain players only play certain discs vis a vis region coding (something I'm currently (not) enjoying tackling as a person with an extensive collection of DVDs in a variety of region codes). Not all of the problems you mention are anything new.

Can you not burn a DVD of an iTunes film? Serious question. I burn CDs from iTunes albums that play in CD players. I just assumed the same would be true for films. I'm thinking I'm about to stand corrected on that one, though.

No, you can't legally. But I know there is some software that you can probably load that will make unauthorized copies for you. I don't want to deal with that software, since it could also load malware onto my computer.

The computer can be hooked up to the tv without much much of a fuss? Depends on which computer. It costs more than a $10 HDMI cord to make an Apple computer compatible with a tv, which is fine. You can spend more if you want, but if you've already spent $2000 on the computer, maybe you don't want to spend more.

And the problem with just burning a CD is, like I said, it doesn't always make copying possible. I burned a CD of Sleeping Around the Corner to put on my car hard drive. The car won't recognize it because of DRM restrictions. I can't get SATC from the CD onto the car. So, what's the big deal. Why not just carry the CD around in the car? That's what I do, but if we are moving into a streaming world, why should I have to do that? Either let me get rid of the CD completely or give me all CDs. Don't leave me in this limbo where I need to do 12 different things to listen to one whole album, with bonus tracks, in my car.

I could stream from my iphone in the car (and I also have HTC One and Samsung Galaxy IV cell phones, to try to cover my bases), but streaming does not always provide continuous listening, depending on reception. I want to stream the most during long car trips and it's the long car trips outside of the big city where you get the most reception problems.

The problem with the "all you have to do to make it work" solutions is that "all you have to do" is more complicated and expensive than I want my life to be and no I did not have these issues when I had CDs and DVDs. The only DVDs I ever had a problem with were the ones I made myself. I might save it on DVD-RAM or DVD-RW and that would not be compatible with some DVD players, but that is something I could fix myself, just by recording onto the more universal type of DVDs.

I'm guessing that is no coincidence. Apple is currently the sole outlet for the movie through iTunes, and we all know how ruthless Apple is when it comes to what they feel is their intellectual property. There was probably some sort of contractual clause drawn up that Apple would be the exclusive outlet for the movie for "x" amount of time, and until that time lapses, no one else is able to advertise the product. This is just purely a guess, though.

That doesn't make sense, though. The whole reason it pays to be an exclusive retailer is because you get a piece of each sale. If you don't allow other people to advertise that the product is for sale, you cut back on potential sales, and you shoot yourself in the foot. That's why, generally, the way it works with an exclusive retailer is all sites simply link to them...so, for example, the IYD site would say "Available for download July 1st! Only on iTunes!" with a link to the iTunes store.

But on July 1, it won't be exclusively on Itunes, anymore. You can buy it on the IYD website then and you get bonus footage too. So, if the site said something about that now, they would potentially be robbing Itunes of sales from now until July 1, because people might choose to wait.

I'm confused. So if you get songs off itunes, you can't burn them onto a cd that will play in your car or cd players? I haven't gotten anything from itunes before.

And also, if you get a movie from itunes (I didn't even realize they had things other than songs), you can only watch it on your computer, even though you paid for it, you still can't burn a copy to watch on a dvd player?

No, you can burn it onto a CD that will play in your car. That's not a problem.

If you buy an Itunes movie, you can watch it on your computer OR you can connect your computer to your tv and watch it that way or buy a device that will wirelessly stream from your apple devices (Ipad, Mac, etc.) to your tv.

But no, you can't burn a copy onto a dvd. There are ways to do it. I know for PCs there was this software called "hand brake" that let you rip movie dvds, even if they were copy-restricted. But I am kind of wary of this unauthorized software.

If any east coasters are planning on buying, downloading and watching this tonight, feel free to post what the "Bonus Features" are here. Just be sure to preface it "Spoilers" first in case there are those that want to be surprised. As for myself, I'd like to know asap what these bonus features are. Living on the west coast, I could technically find out a little after 9pm (my time) if fans start posting details about it. I'd stay up myself and do this but I have to wake up at 4:30am on weekdays, and that would interrupt my much-needed beauty sleep, which I especially need this week because I have HUGE plans that involve the Fleetwood Mac concert on Friday. I'll let you guys in on what that is later. ;)

I hope these bonus features are legitimate. God knows they had the footage to provide it.
What I'd like to see: More personal interaction footage, i.e. dinner parties, behind the scenes of the videos that were made, fan submissions and of course the actual music vids we haven't seen yet like "Annabel Lee", " Wide Sargasso Sea" and "Italian Summer".

Probably the timing. When Fleetwood Mac starts the European leg of the tour in September, that will probably be when Stevie and Dave will promote IYD overseas. I can see them pitching the release during the tour downtime. The same will probably happen for Australia and New Zealand in November and Decmeber.

That's what I thought too. And Fleetwood Mac news and reviews stated that it would be available world wide. I got it on itunes but am curious about the bonus material even though only seems to be two additional scenes.

I get the whole timing with the European tour thing but I think it is more annoying to the world wide fans than it is creating more sales by waiting.

Also what's DRM mean?

DRM is a means of protection of online content. Companies used to put special encoding into their videos so you couldn't copy it and put it up online for others to download. It was an attempt to stop piracy. Problem was the pirates found ways around it and the encoding stopped people from being able to make safety backups (in case their computer crashed or they got a new computer) and it kept people from making their own DVDs, so if you downloaded a movie online but didn't want to watch it on your tiny computer screen you were screwed.

Hey Angie - I'm in the UK and i managed to buy it from the site yesterday - i paid with paypal if that makes a difference

How did you manage that? I'm in the UK too, but as soon as I go to the site, it just says that the film is 'not yet available in your area.' :distress:

so, who can tell us what the bonus scenes are?

I bought originally on itunes and am wondering if the extra scenes are worth ten bucks.

Can't right-click on a kindle. It's touch screen.
Thanks though. I'm working on a different way to play in on the kindle, but I did get it to play on my tv by downloading it to my home computer, uploading it to my itunes, then it was accessible on my Apple TV. I haven't watched it yet though.

About how long are the two added clips. I haven't seen any mention of their length.

They were both real short 3-5 min each. Not really any thing we haven't seen. One is her getting ready. The other is her industrial disco tech way of sending Dave home every night.

I guess our last hope for REAL bonus footage is with the eventual dvd release.

Indeed... with all that footage on the cutting room floor, that was the best they could come up with?

And disappointing that Stevie would cut scenes just because she might swear in them.... there was a recent article posted in another thread where when the interviewer showed up Stevie was in the editing room and insisting a scene be cut coz she said something like "take the effing track off" when they were working on a song. Her reason? she didn't "want to be that kind of role model". Um, Stevie? With all the coke and booze and sex, an F-bomb here and there is NOTHING to worry about. Besides, I think it's important new young women artists realize sometimes, even when you're Stevie Effing Nicks, people will try and push to change your songs and you have to put your foot down. She really IS from another era. Just my tuppence.

Michele

Thanks for that info. I have no idea how to hook my computer up to the tv.

That is really a bummer then, for IYD's documentary to be just an online thing. Can't they just hire a few people to sit around and burn cd's to fill our orders, lol?! Instead of "I want my MTV," we need an "I want my DVD!" campaign on this. ;p

I purchased the bonus footage version from the IYD website and just watched it for the first time last night. Maybe i'm missing something but where are the bonus scenes? My version was 1 hour 40 minutes but there was nothing extra in it. WTF.

I'm thoroughly confused.

Someone on FB said the bonus footage = approx 7 more minutes of stuff we've already seen elsewhere.

I bought the download from the IYD website.
It came with 2 bonus scenes. Some backstage footage
of Stevie getting ready for a show (getting her hair and
make up done, putting on the gloves and shawl, heading to the stage)
And a scene called "The Industrial Disco" with footage of
everyone having a dance party at Stevie's house.
I was able to download all 3 and burn them to a DVD

were they part of the movie or completely separate scenes? I could sworn these scenes were in the original version I bought from iTunes but perhaps I was thinking of the version I saw in the theatre.

They are separate scenes. When you bought on the in your dreams website they showed up right below the main feature. They are both very short and parts of them are out there (the disco bit is briefly used in the original version). If you still have your info from when you bought it (and again works if you bought directly from the in your dreams site), log in to the site and then click this link you will see them right below the feature.

Wow. I purchased the download, and finally got to watch the documentary. It actually exceeded my expectations. For a die-hard Stevie fan, it was very entertaining and insightful. It made me appreciate an album I love even more.

Yet, I can see how this doesn't have a universal appeal, which certainly accounted for low attendance upon it's initial cinema release. Still, it's a great document for anyone who loves Stevie. I hope it gets released on DVD, especially a Blue Ray edition.

Since I didn't see the initial release, I have no idea how to identify the bonus footage. Is it edited into the download version?

I liked how it ended, with the live performance of "In Your Dreams." How odd that she dropped the song so early in the tour. Yes, the sales of the album were very disappointing, but that matters little with regard to the artistic integrity Stevie dedicated to it. It's a significant part of her musical legacy.

I forget the numbers now, but it did pretty well based on per-screen gross, but it didn't open in a very large number of theaters.
