View Full Version : "Buddies" and "Groups"
I see that the forum has buddies and groups as features. I'm just curious as to whether these are things that people really use here? Are they part of the forum culture or more or less ignored?
Don't worry, if you tell me there's loads of private groups and I just can't see them and I'm not invited, I won't be upset! I promise! I'm just asking, 'cause that's what I do. ;)

Honestly, I personally wasn't even aware they existed. But maybe I too am just not invited
*highfives!*
If that's the case, we'll just start our own group. And eat lots of cake and ice cream and not invite anybody else. So there, people! ;)

I've been a Ledge member for over 12 years, and have never heard of Buddies or Groups. It's never come up as a topic of discussion in my years as a moderator, either. I'm guessing these are remnants of a past era of Ledge when the site had different owners?

Really? But the "Add to your Buddy List" function and "Group Memberships" section are both quite prominent on every profile here. I feel a bit weird now that I know I'm the first one who's ever asked about them. Oh well. You've both answered my question rather decisively. Thanks. :)

I'm not aware of such things either. I hope no one ever accuses me of being in a Ledgie click either. I want to be everybody's friend.

Ahh viv, ya big softie. ;) I'm not going to touch the buddy list feature here, but I've definitely got you on my mental buddy list. Which is way cooler and has more sparkles anyway.

Well, you can put anyone on your buddy list, but the "group" membership would require some administration set up. Like there could be groups based on the FM members, Peter, Christine, Lindsey, Stevie and these groups could basically have forums all to themselves with different permissions, so if you were a member of the Christine forum and not the Peter forum, for instance, you could have posts for only Christine members and the Peter members wouldn't see them.
I know some owners of video game sites set their boards up like this, so video game members of a particular group can talk to each other without all of the members of the whole bulletin board seeing their posts.
Obviously, this site is not set up like that, but maybe some people would like it:laugh:.

I can't imagine anything more tedious than such an explicitly divided-by-opinion forum. I can see how it'd work in some cases, but I'm glad that feature was opted out of here. Thanks for indulging me, Michele. Curiosity: Satisfied.

LOL, me too :D I mean, I have some friends here and sometimes we exchange pm, but I'm not part of any group since I don't like the idea of a divided-by-opinion forum too, as Dex correctly stated. Lately I'm not very active, but when I come here I always like to talk with everyone, without distinction of any kind. Isn't this the purpose of a forum?
