View Full Version : Favourite Non-famous Stevie Solo Songs

Recently I've made two polls jsut to see exactly how much people like the SUPER hits, but I was a little suprised myself that many people chose songs I wasn't expecting, I've also come across some old threads asking us of our favourite Stevie songs and what I got from them is a lot of people have a hard time or get tired of answering that questions because I think a lot of us get frustrated when it comes down to Edge, Stand Back, I Can't Wait, Talk To Me, and all the duets... so what I tohught of doing is creating a thread totally based on our love for the non-single/non HUGE Stevie songs from her solo career through the years.
Aside from that theres no specific rules, list as many as you like (within reason please;) )

~Nightbird
~Doing The Best That I Can (Escape From Berlin)
~Love Is
~No Spoken Word
~Some Become Strangers
~If I Were You
~Sable On Blond
~Outside The Rain
~Fall From Grace
~Love Is Like A River
~Desert Angel (I think maybe is was a bside....)
-Strictly demo's I adore and needed to add-
-Blue Lamp (I know this is not a demo at all, but since it was never on one her of solo albums I have always considered it a demo even though it totally isn't. Sorry but I had to put it under this category)
-Thousand Days
-Violet And Blue
-Wild Heart (not technically a demo... but I LOVE the recording of the one with her at a shoot getting her make-up done)
-24 Karat Gold
-Since I'm not a HUUUGE Stevie duet fan I'll throw this list in too-
-Stop Draggin My Heart Around
-Whenever I Call You "Friend"
-Twisted
-You Can't Fix This (Not sure where the hell this would go so let's throw in this category)
-I Need To Know (I actually like the Bella Donna version best, I know this kinda is a duet because she has sang it WITH him before on somewhat recent shows but I'm talking about the BD performance...so technically it isn't a duet it's more ofa cover but I don't feel like making a cover section so let's throw it in this one)
-Leather And Lace
-I Will Run To You
I could probably sit here for another 6 hours moving songs around and changing certain things but I would still probably end up with sometihng very close. This is as good as its going to get. :o

Me too. A lot of the complaints seem to be about the vocals, which I really don't get. I think her newer voice was settling in nicely and was much more suited to this kind of soft ballad than much of her (IMO far more cringeworthy) soft-singing on Tango and RAL. She also doesn't sound nearly as comatose as she does on many of her songs from around that time, at least to these ears.

I make this easy.I love all whats listed.
I know some of you will come to me and say that I was not happy with her tune with Dave Grohl.
Dilute the guitars alittlebit for I can hear Stevie's voice.Thats my only rant on that tune.
I love to see if the track stems come available for the tune.I will take care of the guitars.
Hahaha I think I'm going to put the same songs from the other thread!

Solo:
Sleeping Angel
How Still My Love
Gate and Garden (oft criticized, but really a shining moment vocally as her voice wraps around some questionable lyrics and makes it beautiful)
Battle of the Dragon (wonderful story telling put to some sublime music)
Kind of Woman
The Wild Heart (as with Gate and Garden a stellar vocal performance)
Greta (Rhinestone collections is a really neat opening line)
New Orleans (for the dress up and brush by falsetto which I've so longed for)
Sorcerer (the old BN Demo showcases the show stopping Mac song that wasn't to be and where I draw my name from...Der:)
You Like Me: a song with so much potential and had Rock a Little really rocked a little, this would have been the song to open the album with.
Guest/Duets:
All tracks from Walter Egan's Fundamental Roll, Stevie is all over it, inexplicably more than most Fleetwood Mac albums and serves as a moment of reflection to the band that she should have been on every damn song, she is as good a background/harmony vocalist as she is on lead. (she absolutely lets loose here, check out "Where's the Party" it's just amazing)
Midnight Wind: Stevie saves one of the best performances of her career for this song. It just doesn't get much better.
Desiree: As above, Stevie should have captured this period on one of her own records, sort of post Mask where she sang perfectly.
Edit to Add Insider, how could I have forgotten to add this gem, a simple song and is the best of the Petty collaborations, again Stevie just shines vocally and wraps her voice around the incredible story that makes the song.
Fleetwood Mac:
The four songs that accompany the hit Sara from Tusk, what more can we say.
Thrown Down: should have been a monster hit for the Mac, lead single anyone?

Spot on with all of these, On Ice...I bolded some of my favorites. I think it's cool that Petty took the title for his record (Hard Promises) from the Insider lyrics. Also, the John Stewart/Walter Egan/Rick Vito (and even Petty) albums are really a tribute to Stevie's hitmaking presence as a harmony singer. It seems like having her on your record would probably boost sales to about twice what they would have been otherwise. Additionally, Gate and Garden is one of my all time favorites, and I honestly didn't realize how crappy the lyrics were until it was pointed out to me-I was just busy enjoying the amazing vocal.

I was just busy enjoying the amazing vocal.
I would go as far to say that the Gate and Garden vocal contains just about every strength that Stevie had in her voice and is up there with Edge of Seventeen as her very best solo album vocal. It's just perfect. Especially "while it is not heaven" and "it's just a game that we play" she just nails it.

Because it sounds like a circus polka.
Edit: I wanted to add - this is not a bad thing on its own. It's the specific combination of circus polka and Stevie Nicks that is terrible. Two things that should never mix. Ever. I would liken it to Dolly Parton doing scream metal, or Madonna doing super twangy country music, or Justin Bieber covering Edge of Seventeen. Some things just don't go together, and Paper Doll is the offspring of one of those terrible, unnatural combinations.

I have always seen Paper Doll as a kind of goofy novelty song. It is so far out there it is almost a kind of parody.
True, but I've still always been fond of the vocal.
Paper Doll really works for me, but it certainly was kind of an oddball step for the band. I can see why a lot of people don't much care for it. That certainly isn't the kind of sound people normally listen to Stevie Nicks with the hopes of hearing.
I like Paper Doll. I think it's a good song, but it's maybe not the sound of Fleetwood Mac.
For me, it's just like Family Man, or songs like that. They're good, but contrast with other songs, I don't know if I'm talking clear...
And, knowing that after its release, Stevie left the band, it' her farewell song, and it gives another meaning maybe. But, I repeat, it's a good song, but not ideal for FM.
Regards!
I love Escape from Berlin. I don't quite know exactly why I do, but it has always appealed to me. And Annabel Lee because, well, Edgar Allen Poe is one of my very favorites. Rock a Little is also a favorite....let's see...and If I Were You I've always just totally adored.
Oh and Blue Lamp is one of my very favorites too.

I really put in the effort to limit myself on this, so I stuck to solo album tracks and came up with:
If I Were You
If Anyone Falls
Outside the Rain
How Still My Love
Some Become Strangers
Gate and Garden
Blue Lamp
Lyrically speaking, I couldn't leave these out:
I Sing for the Things
Imperial Hotel
Ghosts
For some reason, I view these latter songs and a few others in a group all their own. I think I do this because, reading the lyrics, a side of Stevie is portrayed that differs from a lot of the notions people have about her from what she says in interviews and such. These songs all portray those feelings of doubt, regret, and just genuine fear about her life and the path that she has ultimately chosen. They make it seem as if she believes in the thoughts she doesn't largely put out for the public, that being Stephanie Nicks, aside from the persona of Stevie Nicks, isn't all it's cracked up to be and that fame, wealth, and success are truly not of the utmost importance at the heart of it all. As with her quote in Mick's book, "Sometimes I think I should go back to being a waitress; maybe I would enjoy life more."
For me, personally, it invokes a bit of sadness and serves as a reminder to make sure that I will be able to live with the decisions I make for my future. As a young law student, I am fully aware that the career path I have chosen mirrors the path that Stevie chose in that it isn't very conducive to family life, is largely male-dominated, is very demanding and time-consuming, but can be extremely successful and rewarding. Songs like these say to me, "while it may be fantastic and successful and people may think your career path, or even your life, is enviable, there will be nights where you live in doubt and regret and want the exact opposite of all that you have."

Does anybody know 'See The World Go By' ? It's from some home tape. I really like it and wish there were a finished version (which there may be for all I know under some other title). It runs 2:43 in length, just her and a guitar. Pretty low-fi unfortunately being circa 1974 possibly? Other songs on the tape are titled 'When Will We Love Again', 'Anybody Out There', 'I Need You', and 'Amber.

Yours sounds clearer and louder than my copy of it. I think someone used an EQ or other processing. Thanks!
They were all from a cassette tape recording originally is all I know, just Stevie and a guitar. You even get the sound of the buttons of the machine being pushed. They are from well after Fritz broke-up my source for it said. I have some 1980 demos that include Rose Garden which are much higher-quality and has other musicians involved. So am thinking they could be anywhere between 1974 and 1979.
Amazing to have so much together so young as a songwriter!
