Not much new to report this time around, but I thought the Without You intro was especially endearing. I will post photos later.
Stevie welcomed us and said, San Jose, Los Angeles, Anaheim, this is the
3rd in a series of shows that they consider to be home town. Orange County is just 30 minutes away. Oh really, Stevie? The only way you can get from Anaheim to West Los Angeles in 30 minutes is by helicopter, especially during rush hour.
At first I thought Lindsey's t-shirt just looked blue under the lights, but it really is blue. Yay.
During Rhiannon, I noticed John and Lindsey looking at each other, smiling and mouthing words. So, this continues to go on, even though they don't make physical contact any longer during the set.
Tonight, before Not That Funny Lindsey decides to explain his unheard of axiom even further. "if something works, run it into the ground and then move on" which means 'if you identify a formula use it up and find something else.' Uh, I have to quibble with that because Rumours wasn't a "formula" at the time. It happened organically. Since it's success, yes I guess the attempts to copy it have been formulaic, but the whole point is that the record company did not want you to move on and find something else. They wanted you to try to recreate Rumours. You abandoned the formula instead. So . . . why not take a burned bridge back to idiom school.
Stevie again says that the last time they have done SOTM on stage was in 1981.
For Without Love, Stevie says this story changes every night because when you start remembering the past, you begin to remember details that have nothing to do with the point of your story and they actually interfere with the point of your story. But to try to make this long story short, she says that there was this poem, written by moi. About 4 years later they were going to use it for Buckingham Nicks II, after Polydor pulled the plug on Buckingham Nicks I [which I think begs the question why Polydor was even interested in II, if one tanked, but that's a story for the next tour], but then someone snuck in and stole their demo. Lindsey points to Mick as the culprit, the thief. Mick makes a cross with his drum sticks and looks guilty.
Stevie says that whoever stole the demo put it back and they didn't know it was gone, but she also explicitly explains that she doesn't have the demo anymore. She seems to be trying to clarify my question, which was why they no longer have the original demo and I suppose that's clear as mud, now.
She looks over to Lindsey and says she knows he is bored of this story. He demurs and says he's not bored. He loves this story. Anyway, her friend found the song on Youtube in 2010 and she asked Lindsey if he remembered the song and he said he did. She said, they should do it then and he said ok.
She says it's the kind of sound that attracted Mick to them, but she said that Lindsey reminded her, on stage, in front of 16,000 people (16,000 Stevie? What venue was that?) that Mick was never attracted to them. He was looking for a lead guitar player and nowhere in his ad for a "lead guitar player" were the words "and his girlfriend" included.
Then, Lindsey goes up to his mic and Stevie, now used to the interruption, tells him to go on and tell the story. He says that he just wants to say that what FM didn't realize was that they needed a brilliant singer as well. She thanks him for saying that.
So, she says Mick let her join the group and so did Chris -- but Chris is only here in spirit, she explains. Then, I think Stevie does mention John McVie, but Lindsey goes over to her mic and puts his arm around her and says, "don't forget John McVie." Stevie says, of course, John McVie. They all turn towards John.
She says that this is the honest truth. When they got the call from Mick and she went out and bought all of the FM albums and listened to them she said, "what a great bass player." She again swears this is the truth -- though neither I nor John have ever heard her say such a thing in the last 38 years. John bows his head in thanks. Yeah Stevie, if you'd flattered him that way in 1975 maybe he would have let you put another song on the album in place of Crystal!
Anyway, I loved that little interlude and especially liked the mention of Christine.
For Gypsy, the back screen is back and Stevie points to the little girls on it for the "if I were a child" part of the song.
No dedications for Big Love this time. Lindsey just says it's a song that accurately described the person he was at the time, but it has transitioned as he has become a different man today and it shows the power of change.
Stevie dedicates Landslide to her cousin Sue and Sue's family who is also Stevie's family. She's dedicating the song to her because she never sees Sue anymore, except at concerts. But even then she doesn't see her -- because it's dark. [Oh my goodness, she is so hilarious].
One of the things I love most about I'm So Afraid is the build. The song is unfamiliar and it starts off slow, so you can sense people are a little relaxed at the beginning, looking around, rustling. But then the intensity increases. The laconic mood breaks with a stir as people realize, this stuff just got real! By the time Lindsey crosses the stage and goes deep into his solo, people are riveted on him. Quiet in places, drawn in and breathless, but then frenzied and excited. When Lindsey goes crazy, tearing at the neck of his guitar, the crowd is going crazy too.
He's playing, we're listening, but we're all on the roller coaster together, moving up gradually and then racing forward. It's not just the solo that leaves such a mark. It's the journey to its peak. The long ride we take and the curves it makes until we get to the end with a sweating, panting Lindsey bent over center stage -- that's all part of the thrill.
After Lindsey gets up from letting the audience strum his guitar during GYOW he almost trips over his amplifier cord. Crisis averted.
For the band introductions, Mick says that it was 2 weeks ago that he noticed that Lindsey doesn't leave the stage the way "us bunch" do. Gotta lay off the wine, dude.
Mick says that John has been on his right hand side "forever and forever" and is his partner in crime [where've I heard that before?]
At the end of the night, Mick brings his daughters Ruby and Tessa out. He says it's the last time they'll get to join him until a little later in the tour, so he thought he'd smuggle them on. He calls them beautiful and kisses each, allowing one to hold his flat top hat as he pops it open.
Then, it's over and I head back home thinking what a whole lotta trouble ensued when Fleetwood Mac hired that "lead guitarist -- and his girfriend."

Love it. Reminds me of the review from the final Unleashed show when the Gypsy intro became one of her endless, rambling tales and Lindsey went to her mic. Too cute.

I like when Linds gets more dressed up...I'm a little tired of the leather jacket, V-neck tee and levi's uniform. Didn't he wear a suit for one or two shows earlier in the tour? He needs to go back to that. He looks more distinguished in a suit.

No, it wasn't a faded black shirt that gets sort of gray or off-black and dingy. It was definitely blue. Even if you washed blue accidentally with black and the colors ran, I don't think you'd get such a true, consistent blue color. It was rather a rich blue, not navy, just a shade or two darker than denim.

Great show!
We had a really fun time. Our seats were originally in the 7th row, but some drunk dude in the 4th row had friends in the 7th and asked us to switch, so we obliged. I brought Stevie a belated birthday gift with me and planned to give it to either Karen or Kelly Ann when I saw them on stage adjusting Stevie's stuff before the show. I saw Kelly Ann. She was adjusting the tilt of Stevie's monitor. I waited for her over at the side and when she was done I called out her name and she kind of looked around like, who's calling me? She saw me and walked over. I told her I saw her in the documentary and that I loved her dancing. She kind of laughed, rolling her eyes embarrassed and said "Oh God - thanks!" I asked her if she could please give Stevie this belated birthday gift. (I got her a little Khaleesi stauette from Game of Thrones. It even has a little dragon on her shoulder.) I wrapped it in clear celophane so she could see what it was. When she took and looked at it I told her it was Khaleesi and she goes, "Oh my God- that is so cute! She will LOVE it!" I said, I hope so and thanked her. She then took it backstage with her. Mission accomplished.
I put a little note card with the gift explaining to Stevie I picked it up for her because of it reminding me of the question I asked her at the LA Q&A regarding Game of Thrones. I also said that I hope she knows that like Khaleesi's faithful dragons, her fans will be behind her no matter what. :D
The show was so fun. Lindsey made this funny, cute face right at me at the end of The Chain - made me laugh. They sounded great, but there were I think 2 times where Stevie had a little squeak to her voice, so I hope nothing serious. Silver Springs wasn't dropped so that's a good sign. I got some pretty decent video on my flip camera that I will upload and post here later. I am currently typing this at the hotel business computer.
More later....

The venue she's talking about is the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Also, Lindsey didn't bring it up, Mick did. It looks like he felt Lindsey should get the credit he deserves for telling Mick if they wanted Lindsey in the band they had to take Stevie too.

Seriously?! Karen, tell her it was 1982 and let's be done with it. Lol.
It brings home the fact that many conclusions I form may be completely illusory. I think they they make conscious choices to repeat something or deviate from it (like removing that guitar part in Rhiannon) when in reality they may never have considered the question at all.
I imagined a conversation where they were discussing whether or not Lindsey should sing on SOTM the way he has in the past and it probably never even came up between them, because Lindsey has no memory of singing SOTM live in the past. Period. So, so much for me guessing what goes on behind the scenes.
I meant to mention that after the Without Love vocals, I think, both Lindsey and Stevie moved towards Mick and they kind of finished the song together that way. I thought it was lovely, not only because it brought the introduction to the song in which all of them participated full circle, but because it reminded me of the past, like SYLM from The Dance or Tusk when Christine, John and Lindsey would all huddle together while playing.
When they are in physical proximity during a song, they feel more like a group. It's heartwarming.

My GYOW uploading now. Taking forever.
Anyway, during the Dream Catcher speech Stevie does at the end of the show, she mentioned that they appreciate the fact that we have been seeing them perform these same songs for 35 years now, coming to the shows over and over again, and that makes them appreciate doing them over and over again. Really sweet and heartfelt speech.
Playing Devil's Advocate here, but I bet she sees some of us so much she's familiar with some of our faces. She's gotta be. That's maybe what made her think of that - like when she gets maybe sick of doing Rhiannon or Dreams, she sees us there for it each time and thinks, Well - they're not sick of it yet. It makes her probably feel better about doing those same songs, over and over. I dunno.
Oh, Stevie had a REALLY pretty diamond necklace on - like a diamond chain.
Soon as the dang video is up on Youtube I will post a link here.

She's like, "we throw them out, you throw them back, we throw them out, you throw them back . . . " I was almost afraid we'd be on an infinite dreamcatcher loop.
Certainly, when they perform the songs with energy and excitement, it's easy to feel like you're hearing them for the first time. And after awhile, you have a sense of being part of the performance. There's a participatory vibe that's infectious.

I'm trying to think where the phrase Without Love comes from. It feels vaguely it must have to do with someone I like for it to stick in my head. I always want to say it. It feels like maybe something Loy and Powell would do that I would make a note of, but I don't know.
Anyway, when Lindsey said that Say Goodbye was actually a mate to Without You, I was thinking that a song called Without Love would be a good mate -- not about there being no love left, but having to live without that person in your life, upon whom so many things revolved for so long.

Michele
Haha yes, it kills me when they can't even get half of the song names right! Oh, and I also read a review of the EP that put forth the idea that Sad Angel is actually about the end of the world :-/ (can't find it now or else I would post it--may have been a concert review).
Here's my GYOW. It's a little shakey, but it definitely gives you the feel of being down in front. :D

Jamie - i'm seriously impressed! :xoxo:
a) you stayed in front of Lindsey's mic the whole show and didn't try to run to Stevie's!
b) you filmed what was in front of you and just a couple of times strayed to Stevie's side... you filmed her standing there during GYOW just the one time she was right in front of you but the rest of the time you didn't follow her with your camera but were actually showing us Lindsey's guitar solo and fan guitar strumming!
hey, did Lindsey do some audience hand-shaking there at the end?
thanks for filming and for sharing your video. :)
and just if someone's wondering why i'm so impressed: you are self-confessed diehard Stevie fan. i've stood at some of these FM shows by people who are self-confessed music-first, BN-first, FM-first fans. i was a bit surprised and amused by some of them looking in awe at Stevie, while they were standing right there in front of Lindsey and he was playing and singing, and she was doing nothing musically.

I don't know about after GYOW, but I believe I did see Lindsey shake one hand after Say Goodbye, then he made a quick exit. He was kind of headed out and then ran back really quick for a handshake.

Are you into show tunes?
The score from Phantom of the Opera is one of my favorite albums.
You know, I was thinking of a Hepburn/Tracy movie. I don't like Spencer Tracy, but I like Hepburn and there was a time in my life where I made a job for myself of seeing all movies that certain duos: Loy/Powell, Hepburn/Tracy, Hepburn/Grant, MacMurray/Russell and Grant/Loy were in together.

I was thinking a lot about it and have decided that if I had a chance to see Christine again, I'd have to make an exception for this last in a lifetime event and park myself far left and just ignore the other 2 guys all night.
When Christine left, cell phone cameras were not prevalent, so she will probably be freaked out by people photographing and recording her during an entire show (or however long she's on). I think they still actively had security restrict cameras in 1997. But in September, she is going to be trained on, whether she likes it or not.
For the Without You intro, I'm sure Stevie will mention how Mick let Christine decide whether or not another woman could join the band. I really resent the assumptions behind that, but whatever . . . I'm sure she'll bring it up.

Thanks for the compliments. I could have gone to the stage before the start of the show, but I really don't like being right up against it. Yeah, you're technically closer to the artist, but my experience with that is that you end up just looking up their nostrils most the night. I like to see them, and them to see me, which is why I like to stay back in the rows 2-7 area. I love the eye contact. :D But that's just me.
As far as filming goes, I just tried to do my best with what was in front of me (mostly Lindsey). Lindsey put on a great show too. I almost got a towel! One flew right by me - I think it's on one of my videos. But I did try to get video of Stevie when I could (how could I not ;))
My next show is July 5th in San Diego, for the VIP Mick thingy. We have 4th row, center for that one. I'm not planning on filming that one though- just want to soak it all in.

So now they're the "thank you twins."
There was a moment in the intro when Lindsey looked away to Mick and Stevie was talking into the mic, then Lindsey whipped around and put his face to the mic again Stevie took a big step back  Guess she wasn't expecting him. It made me laugh.

Here's Stevie's "Without You" intro speech..
http://www.youtube.com/edit?feature=vm&video_id=XxJCqtehwUU&ns=1
You know what I love about the whole Without You Intro and the song is how sweet everyone is genuinely trying to be to each other. I think they are really trying to heal old wounds. :xoxo:
Lindsey seems to really be making an effort to be sweet to Stevie and make amends. You can tell it's not scripted either because the things they say to and about each other are not being said again and again at each show and the reactions between all of them appear real.
Like when Lindsey tells Stevie that Fleetwood Mac just did not know they needed a brilliant lead singer. Stevie is so surprised Lindsey complemented her she actually seemed like she was not sure what to say back to him at first, and then when Lindsey goes and hugs her she get's so flustered she can't remember Mick's name.
And when Lindsey tells Stevie he and Mick want to thank her too (oh and don't forget John McVie), Stevie seems again surprised and pleased. Poor thing can't believe that after all this time Lindsey Buckingham is actually complementing her and being nice to her, and sadly I think at that time Lindsey finally saw it too (that Stevie was surprised and pleased he was being nice to her).
Then finally, at the end of the song Without You (Stevie and Lindsey end the song in front of Micks drum kit) Lindsey tells Mick to blow Stevie a kiss (which he does), Stevie's again is pleased and Lindsey walks off with a huge smile.
It's all so sweet it makes me cry. I hope and pray that it continues and that they all can finally put their demons to rest. The whole back story is so, so sad and I do hope they all eventually have a happy ending (whatever that may be).

I don't think she was that surprised about that, since Mike reported that Lindsey said the same thing in Las Vegas just before this Anaheim show.
But it's nice that they are interacting nicely and warmly on this tour and I hope that there's not a lot of badmouthing going on after it's over.

Oh, I did not know that Lindsey had said she was brilliant at a different show. Well maybe that is now part of the show. I guess we will have to wait and see what they do next.
