View Full Version : Where do you come from?
Well, in kind of a spinoff of The Accent Thread and the Eh!? thread, I thought it might be interesting to hear about the parts of the world you all call home. Not in a creepy give-me-your-postcode kind of way, but just generally. What's life like there? What are the people like? Do you like it? Do you constantly get mugged and want to leave at any cost? Etc?
Just thought it might be fun to learn a bit more about you guys. We seem like a pretty international crew here. :)

Nice idea!! This is where I live :D
I live near a cruisey pretty coastal town called Noosa Heads, 90 min north of Brisbane Aust.. a popular tourist destination, main attractions are our beautiful surf beaches, National parks, cafe's & restaurants.. Sub tropical climate..
Born in Melbourne & moved here 20 years ago, the population then was only 17,000 now has doubled in size.. Still it's a very safe & friendly community, & never worried about getting mugged.
We live on 12 private acres adjacent to a lovely River, we have 4 dogs, daily visiting Kangaroos, flying foxes, possums, goanna's & the odd carpet python.. 5 min drive into town, It's a great place to live.
Oooh sounds like a postcard-perfect place, AWH. :) I'm really jealous. Although truthfully I think Oz would be simply too hot for me (even the south coast of England gets me annoyingly sweaty in the summer months) it's certainly a place many around here seem to fantasize about moving to.
And Noosa Heads is a brilliant name for a place. I think Australia seems to always have the best place-names. Although England has a little village called ****terton, which I think could give any other name a run for its money. I'd love to say "I'm from ****terton". How fantastic fun would that be to say?
(ETA: Ha! I see the board doesn't even let me to say ****terton. Brilliant!)
I live in a large town on the south coast of Sussex, where I can see the ocean clearly from my windows, and the weather is quite sunny (by English standards). We're also at the south end of a national park with lovely green hills for miles. Very pleasant. It's a town that I suppose isn't very stand-out-ish in any way by UK standards, so a lot of the locals sort of slag it off in that typically self-depricating English way, but there's an affection for the place underneath all of that. The architecture, amenities, and people have absolutely charmed me, and although I do miss home sometimes, I love it here.
I also am getting far too used to not having to drive anywhere. ;) It's a lovely change of pace from my hometown (Calgary Canada), which at that time pretty much had a drivers-only infrastructure. Although it is improving these days, which is good news for me if I decide to move back.

I'm from Detroit. The actual city, not the suburbs.
The people are either crappy or great depending where you live, but it's a huge city, so that is to be expected. I've lived in different areas over my lifetime, and I have never been mugged. However, I do remember when I was about 4 or 5 my teacher was mugged right in front of us while she was walking us to the park and it ended up on the news.
Detroit is having a rough period right now, but it'll be fine.
Now I live part-time in East Lansing, Mich (the capital) and part-time in Virginia.

I live in the U.S. I am originally from Eastern Kentucky...cross a bridge and you'd be in Ohio or drive a little while and you would be in West Virginia.
My family moved/traveled a lot, so I also lived in Florida and South Carolina when I was younger.
I now live in a rural town in Alabama. My husband is from here, originally. I really don't care for where I live. I am an open minded and accepting person. That type of person doesn't seem to fit in well here.
The people here are very into Christianity and look down on anyone who isn't in a church every time the doors are open. They have very narrow ideas of how people should be. If you are not like them, you are not treated well.
This area does have some natural beauty, at least. There are mountains, lakes, rivers, and waterfalls nearby.

Chelluversu, I live near a village called Lancing over here. You're location made me do a double-take! I love finding similar place-names around the world. My brother-in-law is from Sydney, Nova Scotia, for example. I geek out about stuff like that.
I agree, cities and towns do have their cycles. Perhaps regrettably, the only impression I have of Detroit is that it's rather subversively north of the Canadian border. I just find that rather badass for some reason.
Virginia looks absolutely stunning. Definitely a State on my to-see list.

I am from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and I live in the Southside. It's in the city just about 2 minutes from Downtown Pittsburgh. I have a few decks on my house so I have a great view of the city, the southside and the 3 rivers. The people here are some of the nicest, most hard working people you will ever meet. We are die hard Steelers, Penguins and Pirates Fans and we love to drink! I have been living in the city since the year 2000 and I love it. I have never been mugged so thank goodness for that. It's pretty safe here and I dont think I would ever want to leave. There is no worry of earthquakes, hurricanes or really even tornadoes here so that makes it nice to not have to think about those things.

I'm sorry you don't get on better culturally in Alabama, holidayroad! But, perhaps it's hermit-y of me, but if I had to choose, I think natural beauty is more important to me. :) That photo is great!

I'm a near "rarity"...I'm a NATIVE Californian. Considering how many people who live in Southern California (well, California in general, I surmise) have come from elsewhere (either in or out of the USA....legally or otherwise), being a natural born Californian (who STAYED in California) is pretty rare. Seems like everyone outside of California wants to live here & those who WERE born here can't wait to get the *** out.

Shackin'up, I think chiliD may mean that he was born in California, as opposed to one of the many people who moved there in adulthood. Not "native" as in ethnically indigenous. Although he may be... Should I start a race thread? ;)
I know how you feel, chiliD. Calgary has been experiencing, perhaps less famously, a similar phenomenon. Adults who live there rarely seem to be from there, and "where do you come from originally?" is a popular question in small-talk.

I live in a small village between two middlesized cities in the Netherlands. My house is built along the dike, and four stories high, so we can look out over that dike. I bike to work everyday, 7 or 8 miles of this:
http://www.bedandbreakfastwaaldijk.nl/bedandbreakfastwaaldijk_bemmelsewaard.php
Scroll to the three pics of the environment, these are from the places I see and smell during dusk and dawn.
Shackin'up, how lucky you must feel to have a commute like that! What stunning scenery.
My walk along the shoreline to work is fairly pretty, but I have to admit that I get too caught up in that morning feeling of ugggghhhh-I-have-to-wooooork to really appreciate it very much these days. I hope you're better than I am.
OK so I'm seriously overposting in this thread. I'll lay low for a while. But seeing and hearing about all these different places ir eally great. Thanks guys! :)
In the south of Argentina, in Bariloche, a wonderful place between mountains, snow, lakes, and pretty animals!
It's cold and windy all the year, but sometimes the summers have cute days, where you can enjoy the nature, the forest and the lakes, just a few miles away from the city.
As I've seen on pictures, our landscape is similar to some places in Switzerland, Finland, Canada, and the Rocky Mountains in the United States.
P.S: You can enjoy wine, cheese, berries, brew and chocolate too!!!! :blob2:

As for myself, I live in Austin, Texas. It's really beautiful here as well: huge rolling hills, limestone cliffs, crystal clear spring fed rivers, creeks, and lakes, and very laid back, friendly, quirky locals who love good food, drinks, and music. I grew up in Austin, lived away for a long time, and moved back a few years ago. I'm so glad I did, too... there's any other large American city I could be happy in. Unfortuantely, the secret is out about Austin... and it's growing to the point where quality of life is really starting to suffer. That's one of the several reasons I'd like to move some place else later in life. Mainly, I just want to live where there's no semblance of winter. :)

Yes, Dex has it how I meant it...BUT, my dad IS 1/4 Cherokee, so there is THAT side of it, too. But, I really don't have clue about my heritage since I was adopted at birth and never have tried to research my birth parents or my bloodline. Clinging to the Andes, between the parched coastal desert and the lush expanse of the Amazon rainforest, Peru offers such a wide range of experiences that it can be difficult to choose between them. Solemn pilgrimages honor gods both Christian and indigenous. Neon-lit discos get jam-packed with reveling youth. Ancient ruins divulge prehistoric secrets. Waves to surf, museums to visit, lakes to sail, labyrinthine cities to explore. And of course one of the "new" 7 wonders of the world, Machu Picchu:

By the way, I live in Miraflores, a Lima neighborhood near the shore where they do the paragliding (see 2:07 at the video).
And here's another video more oriented to backpackers and youngs at age or heart:

So you can see we peruvians are proud of our culture, our past, our geography, our cuisine, our music. We are friendly, hospital, but messy (traffic is a hell, no american dare to drive within the city). One thing is true, you won't get bored if you come to Peru. Give me a call if you come to Lima (sure you'll be around Miraflores!)

Well, I live in Italy, in a small city on the sea called La Spezia. I don't like it very much to be honest, because I love big cities and a different lifestyle. Anyway, I know that a lot of tourists always come here from differents countries and it seems they like what they see (especially "Cinque Terre" and the five small villages included in it) :)
The good things here are the sea and the hills, the sun, the mild climate and the palm trees..maybe that's why I love California so much! :D

I hail from Wollongong, Australia, about an hour or so south of Sydney on the east coast of Australia. Have literally lived in the same house since I was two so am more than familiar with my city. It's fairly lovely, I guess, nice and laidback but close enough to Sydney if you want all the bustle and business of that city too, on occasion.
We have a ridiculous number of beaches down here which would be fantastic if I weren't incredibly hateful towards hot weather and likely to get sunburnt within 15 minutes of standing outside on a hot day... I blame the English/Scottish half of me, to be honest. Damned inconvenient.

I live in a place where some people have no clue what a Kardashian is and their only fixation is pills and Jesus. Harlan KY is not where I love to be but I do love the small town qualities. You could burp on one side of it and everyone would know by tomorrow afternoon. Everything you need is within a 10 minute drive. Everything you want is hours away (Lexington for instance). There are people here that live in pajamas and haven't had teeth since age 3 because they were raised off a check that lets them be lazy and worthless. But there is the other majority, people like me that live from paycheck to paycheck dreaming of leaving this place one day.

Tilthefirefades, I know what you mean. I can never decide if I'd enjoy small town life or really, really not enjoy it. I'd probably find it at once charming and incredibly irritating, and I do like the sense of anonymity bigger places give you, to an extent.
Does sound like an interesting place, though. :)

New Orleans born and raised. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. Very, very humid though; I could do without that.

Hi Dex
I live in a village called St Dogmaels (or Llandudoch in Welsh) which is the very northern end of Pembrokeshire. Its very close to the town of Cardigan and my nearest beach is Poppit Sands. Its a really lovely area and a really friendly community. I can tell you lots more another time, but I have to go and get ready for the firework display - yippee!! love fireworks! Thanks for your interest - happy googling :]

Oh gosh it's bonfire night already? Sheesh the year goes fast.
Have a good time. I will be googling, but I'll hold you to your offer of telling me more another time. This thread needs a boost! ;)

and Oklahoma bred. I hate the stereotypes that Oklahomans are hayseeds and/or idiotic! Even worse is the use of the word "Okie" used towards us citizens of the city of Muskogee, Sorry Merle Haggard, but your song about my hometown missed the mark by light years...The first verse is the most inaccurate verse in all of music!

The tiny little town of Leary, Ga(the state not the country). I'm about an hour from Bama(Alabama for you yankees and non Americans) and Florida state lines.
Yahoo search for pics of Leary (http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images;_ylt=A0oG7h6JBHtS3DUA4CBXNyoA?p=leary+ga+pictures&fr=ytff1-inter&fr2=piv-web) The first 8 rows are of the buildings.
We have the devil's number as our population(666), so that's gotta curse us or something. My paternal family has been here since the early 1800s. It's your typical small southern town, lots of gossip and church going. There's 6 churches within a mile radius of Leary. People here are easy going, laid back, polite, and semi accepting. There's nothing but farms, creeks, and a hunting reserve surrounding us. Right now, the aroma of the farmers harvesting peanuts is filling the air.

My parents visit Napa regularly and love it by all accounts. Looks like a wonderful place to live.
Mind you, they have been to Tuscany on a regular basis as well and I think would have a tough time rank ordering the two. ;)

I had to google the lyrics to the song, and... Wow what an irritating piece! Like, holy crapballs! Glad to hear he's living in a fantasy world, because he just comes off like a smug judgemental ass.

Hi Dex, last week you asked me where I come from, and I couldn't finish the post. I'm originally from Kent, but I haven't lived there since 1993. I spent many years in London and a couple of years in Sydney, Australia, and now I've ended up here in West Wales. I live here with my very lively 4 year old daughter, who keeps me very busy, and my cat who looks a lot like the photo above. Here are some pictures of my local area.
Are you in Brighton? I just had a chance to look through this thread and saw your photos. I considered moving to Brighton once over, as I used to spend weekends there years ago. :)
Thanks for the photos, MoonSister! Looks like a beautiful place. Out of interest, how do you find being an Englishwoman in Wales, generally? A lot of English people I talk to slag off Wales in a jokey-bantery sort of way as seems to be the British norm, but sometimes I detect a bit of genuine fear of anti-English sentiment underneath that. My husband usually all but refuses to step foot over that way for example, much to my dismay. Maybe some people have just grown a little too used to being the dominant culture of the world over the last few centuries. I'd love to hear your take.
I live in Worthing which is about 10 miles west of Brighton, so you have a good eye! It lacks Brighton's well-earned reputation as a cultural hub but it is a charming place that I've developed a real affection for (something many of the locals seem to lack) and it seems to be consistently on the up, with progressively more interesting things opening up and happening as the days go by. It's nice to be a part of that, I think. I'd happily buy property and spend a solid chunk of my life here, but my husband has his heart set on moving to Canada, where I come from originally, so that's likely where we'll end up long-term.

So you are in Worthing...I don't think I've been there. I only had a quick glance at the photo's, and when I saw Sussex I immediately thought of Brighton. It does sound like a charming place - I've always had a soft spot for British seaside towns. I'm basically happy if there is a café and I can see the sea.
I've been here in Wales for 8 years now, and I honestly can't think of a time I've had a problem with the Welsh/English thing. Its a very accepting area around here. Its always had a lot of incomers from all over Britain and further afield. So its very good mix of Welsh and English and I also know German's, French and Czechs, and many other nationalities that live here. I really do love it here. Even though it might look quiet, there is loads of things going on. After moving around for 20 years (the gypsy me!) I've finally found somewhere that feels like home. I know what you mean about the anti-English and anti-Welsh sentiments, and I know those attitudes are around in some places, but I'm not aware of it around here. My daughter has started at Welsh school, so we are both learning Welsh now. Oh and my grandmother was Welsh so maybe its in my blood.
Canada sounds like a great place, I can understand your husband wanting to move there. I liked Australia because of the big open spaces and I can imagine Canada is similar in terms of space, and all that wildlife!

I live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. A city that you probably have heard of :)It's a great city with a lot of entertainment. I live here for three years now and I'm still enjoying the city. The center is beautiful with all the canals and houses. I live about 15 minutes away from it -by bike, we do almost everything by bike :) - .
-Tried to upload a picture of Amsterdam, but it didn't work. Just Google "Amsterdam" and you'll find a lot of pictures-
I'm originally from the north of The Netherlands, I've lived with my parents in a small town near a lake for 18 years. I did a lot of sailing there. For college and university I moved to a bigger town, known for it's education facilities. Had an awesome time there, living with friends, which was a lot of fun.

I am born and live in Cittŕ della Pieve, a town in the province of Perugia. It's in Umbria very near the border with Tuscany. My house is in the fraction at the base of the hill in the extreme bottom:

SisterNightroad, you live in the place most people dream of vacationing... Simply gorgeous! How great life it must be. Or does it get boring?
I live in an ugly city two hours away from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, however, with 600,000 inhabitants and the proximity to Rio, there's never a dull moment. :)

Ah ah it's true I am lucky, but if it's of any consolation, yes it's very boring and people are very narrow-minded, and here most of the young people want to go living the movida of Rio de Janeiro in the summer.
