Within the past few years Jimmy Iovine was quoted as saying that he thought Stevie Nicks had the best voice in rock music. Or something along those lines. Had the strongest voice, the most powerful voice, etc.
Does anyone know where this interview came from, what he said exactly - and is it available online?

Thanks!

After the performance, The Hollywood Reporter asked Iovine if was in fact comparison Del Rey to the iconic Nicks. His answer? “Lana haunts me the way that Stevie's voice haunted me and I just love her album so much,” he said. “But I can't compare anybody to Stevie Nicks because Stevie has the greatest tone of any female rock singer that I've ever heard.”

I've been worried about Jimmy, he doesn't seem to be in good health.

I wonder what Stevie thinks of Lana Del Rey. They've been compared a bit, and obviously they have the Jimmy connection and Stevie watched her perform at that event.

It's funny to me that Lana gets compared to Stevie... I don't see/hear it

Lana is so boring to me, and I *tried* to liker her music, but just couldn't. Especially after that SNL performance:

I saw that he and Dr. Dre donated $73 million to USC this week.

they have the Jimmy connection

They have the Rick Nowels connection too. He's Lana's go-to co-writer and producer. And he did a lot of Stevie's songs too. (Majority of RAL, majority of OSOTM, plus Maybe Love, I Miss You, and Everybody Finds Out)

Jimmy's in good health.
He's giving the commencement speech at USC.
In front of 40,000 people.

I am not to familiar with her but I was listening to some of her music last night on Itunes. I will say that the new soundtrack song for Django Unchained that she did is pretty good. She has a wonderful voice but I don't see the Stevie connection at all either. Oh and her music down right depresses me.

You mean the Great Gatsby soundtrack, right?

Lana Del Rey is totally depressing, and blah

I don't really know why there would be a comparison either aside from the fact that they are both kind of weird and idiosyncratic  But I used to get quite a few google alerts for Stevie's name that came from reviews of Lana's LP.

Your absolutely right, it was the Great Gatsby.

I'm glad Iovine is still respecting Stevie's voice. She definitely does have the perfect voice for rock. The only other female rock vocalist I can compare her to, as far as power goes, is Maria McKee, although her voice is quite a bit different...like comparing apples to oranges.

I was at the graduation - family member just graduated.
Great speech by Jimmy Iovine.
He talked a lot about working with John Lennon and Bruce Springsteen.
He skipped over his Tom Petty/Stevie Nicks years; but when the ceremony was over, the USC Marching Band played a very lively version of Tusk.
Great day for an estimated 60,000 in attendance.

[From an interview with Doug Morris]

What Doug Morris thinks of Jimmy Iovine, Steve Jobs… and being nice

Doug On… Jimmy Iovine

“I wanted someone to produce Stevie [Nicks’ solo album Bella Donna in 1981], and Jimmy was emerging as a great young producer. He had produced Tom Petty and worked with John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen – he was on an arc to greatness.

“I called him and said, ‘I want you to produce this Stevie Nicks solo album’ and he said, ‘I’d rather produce The Rolling Stones.’

“I said, ‘I understand you would, so would I! But you’re gonna produce Stevie Nicks.’

“He went out there and produced her solo record.

“I was very good friends with Stevie, so I called her up after the first two weeks at her house to find out how she was doing, and Jimmy answered the phone. ‘Hey Jimmy, can I talk to Stevie?’ ‘She’s sleeping.’ I said: ‘Ah. What are you doing there?’

“That’s when I realised that when you work with Jimmy, you’ve got to be ready that he’s always gonna get a little something extra.”

“Jimmy’s an extrordinary person… He’s really a product of his dad. If Jimmy would get up in the morning and make an omelette, his dad would come in and say, ‘That’s the best omelette I’ve ever seen. No-one can make an omelette like Jimmy.’

“If Jimmy would say to his dad, ‘Can you believe I’m going to work with John Lennon tomorrow?’ You know what his dad said? ‘Lucky John!”

“When you’ve got someone like that behind you, a mentor like that, it gives you the confidence to go out and destroy the world. That’s what Jimmy has – enormous talent, intellect and a great belief in his own ability.”

“Jimmy and I have stayed friends for 37 years. I speak to him at least twice a day. He is the most remarkable person.”

This is off topic, but I now see that Stevie and Jimmy's relationship really was spontaneous, I had always thought Jimmy purposely got with Stevie to put her on "lockdown" which would enable him to efficiently get through the production of BD. So nice to read that maybe he and she really did fall for eachother.

Stevie has a predictable habit of getting romantically involved with people she collaborates with on her music... Lindsey, Jimmy, Rupert, Tom, Paul Fishkin, and so on. She mixes work and pleasure a LOT. I think it's interesting that Doug Morris though frames it like Jimmy somehow worked the situation to his own advantage and got involved with Stevie ... "Jimmy always gets something extra" Does that mean he also has a history of getting it on with all the chicks he's worked with ..?

We'll that makes practical sense. Music is her whole world. She meets and hooks up with people who live in that world - people she can relate with. It's not as if she has ever been as a big time socialite. She seems to stay close with her extended musical family. But it does seem a little bit incestuous of sorts.
