How have I missed this gem for so long?!

Think I may have dismissed it because some of Lindsey's Mirage songs I find quite inaccessible and not to my taste. I just downloaded it and I *love* it.

Sigh.

I'm probably one of those people he hated who wanted more pop stuff instead of all his Tusk songs.

A while ago we had a thread about how Book of Love is one of those songs that you can almost forget exists....not because it's bad (I like it too), but just because for whatever reason, it virtually never comes up in our conversations here on The Ledge.

I wasn't really a fan of Lindsey's retro kick. This song's ok I guess.....not something I visit often.

What constitutes a 'retro kick' other than Oh Diane?

Oh I hear touches of retro in the Original Trouble and Even Bwana. But that's just my ears, lol

I love all his Tusksongs, But also all his Miragesongs sans Diane.

Book of Love is beautiful. THAT would be a deep cut on tour.

I just don't get him sometimes and so I can overlook some of his beautiful little moments.

Yep, great tune... love the guitar work at the end.

Another Stevie missed vocal opportunity on a track that could have made it that much better IMO.

I love Book of Love! Definitely a song that puts me in a better mood. One of my favorite Lindsey tracks for sure- never gets skipped by me :)

I disagree with you on Oh Diane, though I suspect Lindsey would agree with you. I think it's a decent little tune where he does his best Elvis.

I agree that Book of Love is gorgeous. Really could have been a single, back in those days when singles still mattered.

Actually, I pretty much like all of Lindsey's Mirage songs; he has the strongest ones on this album: Eyes of the World and Can't Go Back. I even like Empire State. I would say Gypsy and Hold Me are also outstanding tracks, with That's Alright coming a couple of notches behind. The rest are of the stuff is pretty bland.

If you include GYOW in the "pop stuff".. then include me. I wish he would have written more rocker songs.

Yes I do like Book of Love and several Lindsey Mirage songs specially Can't Go Back, a song played a lot in a (then) new peruvian radio in 1982. Despite being released as a single, I think only in UK, it has not included in any hits compilation :(

Stellar track! Love the retro vibe that comes through on alot of Lindsey's early 80s stuff. He and Dashut really compensated for Stevie's absence on this. Even she herself could have sworn she were on it. His best track on Mirage for sure, though I suspect he hold's a grudge on most of this album since the record company kind of pushed them back into more of a mainstream direction with their music. If I ever had a chance to meet Lindsey I would ask him what his thoughts are on his Mirage songs. Just something I've always wondered about.

I have always liked the book of love, I fell that it’s one of their under rated songs. I was kind of hoping they would play that and Seven Wonders on this tour.

It's a great song. And I think it's part of one of the strongest sequences on any FM album.
From Love In Store (one of my favorite McVie tracks) to Can't Go Back (one of my favorite Buckingham songs and possibly the best on Mirage), to That's Alright (another favorite) to Book of Love, to Gypsy, to Only Over You (a sleepy track that reminds me of Over and Over and Mystified - all songs that start nowhere and go nowhere but they are mesmerizing....)

Love this song. Love the whole album, but Oh Diane and Wish You Were Here were always duds for me.

Back when I was a dumb teenager, I bought Mirage as a budding Stevie Nicks fan trying to explore her non-solo work. I picked Mirage because it was the cheapest Mac album on the shelf. Smart use of logic, eh? So it was my first Mac album, and apart from the Stevie songs, I mostly hated it. It sounded so bland and cheesy to me at the time. Book of Love, though, was the exception. I found that one really enticing.

My tastes have evlolved a lot since then and I actually love all of Mirage now. I'd even call it underrated. But Book of Love will always be something special to me.

Most everybody here knows that Lindsey's songs aren't my favorite. However Book of Love would be in my 20 favorite Lindsey-Mac songs list.

Here's how "Book of Love" did here on the Ledge on my various polls/contest. Generally it falls in that middle ground between awesome and awful.

I actually enjoy a lot of the retro-50s sounds from the early 80s. Reminds me of sunny times and Lindsey's and Christine's songs really fit that mood. It's not Tusk or Rumours but it's enjoyable pop music. I have a playlist with a bunch of the retro-50s sounds from the early 80s, and quite a few Mirage songs show up on that.

I agree. Mick describes in his book how Lindsey arrived to the Mirage recording sessions: Tired of being typecast as the archetypal northern California hippie, Lindsey had now veered from his New Wave sound into a 1955 Eddie Cochrane rock and roll feel.

As typical Fleetwood Mac (at least that lineup), I like a lot the combination of the 3 songwriters in Mirage. However I didn't enjoy Law and Order that much. Just some songs. No doubt in Fleetwood Mac the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts.

I did not like L & O much either. I really don't like 50's style music.....and that record was busting with that sound. Definably a head scratching direction For Lindsey.

I have always loved this track. It's very intense and I can almost see in his head while he is singing it. The backing vocals on Mirage are stellar.
