You probably have to "upconvert" the file from a *.mov to a *.vob or *.mpeg. I'm not sure how much, if any, information is lost in the conversion.
I'm constantly appalled that in 2013 it's still such a hassle to transmit content wirelessly from any wi-fi enabled device to an HD television in true/full high definition.
Oh, and what is the point of pre-ordering a digital download?

More crappy digital encoded music for bucks.I'm glad she's selling them.
Digital download for bucks is not my cup of tea here.
It looks like the CDs are history like the cassettes,VHS,Betamax and vinyl.
I'm glad that some vinyl is still produced.
Please release IYD on vinyl.

I have an Apple macbook, but without the apple tv conduit, I'm not going to be able to hook that up to my tv. I already have a Roku. I don't want an apple tv. Itunes content is different than other content. I'm sick of these walled gardens and I don't want to keep content in my Itunes library anymore. I'm moving away from Apple downloads because the media is not easily transferable.

Wow. This thread is disturbing with all the Apple hate. Like it's their fault or something.
Be glad it's coming out somewhere, as physical media is getting scarcer and digital will be the future as physical media dies. Just no point in it anymore...very costly to distribute. I mean damn, they're already streaming 3D, which looks amazing. Home video is taking a hit and blu-ray sales have been falling as well.
Within the next 3 years streaming with BD quality will be everywhere (it's already started). Besides, the actual documentary is all digital from the source. Makes 100% perfect sense that digital should be the main distribution outlet.
I actually thought the film looked crappy blown up in the theater. It's gonna be so much better on digital, between all my devices.

Apple's incompatibility with other devices is their fault. I have an Iphone, an Ipad and a Macbook. There's no reason why I should need an Apple tv to get media from one of those devices to my tv. I don't want media I buy from Apple to be separated from the rest of my library anymore. The more Apple tries to lock me in, the more I want to break free. If I buy it on Netflix or on Amazon, I can pull it up on my Roku or my tivo or connect my kindle to my tv. Can't do that with Apple. I want universality which it is not in Apple's financial interest to provide and that was something I accepted 5 years ago, even 2 years ago, but not any longer.

It appears you can't watch an itunes movie on a kindle, so here are my options as far as I know, if I want to watch it in my comfy living room on tv and not my desktop:
-Buy an apple tv box.
-Buy an ipad and use an hdmi cable to hook up.
both of these are expensive. I hate to complain, but this sucks.

But it's not just an HDMI cable. You have to get the $40 Adapter to hook the Ipad up. The Ipad doesn't have an HDMI slot. So, get the dongle and that should do it for you.

you don't need an apple tv. you can hook your macbook or ipad up to the tv directly. your apple content shouldn't be "separated" from the rest of your library--i'm not getting what you mean by that, or what problem you're having streamlining your apple content with your other devices/downloads.

:blob2: Finally ! I have been waiting a long time for this. I just did the preorder. Showing some Apple love; If you purchased anything for iTunes it follows you around forever. For example we purchased Stevie's video Sorcerer on iTunes something like 10 years ago and forgot that we did so. Sorcerer later showed up later as a purchased item when we got newer devices. When I downloaded the Fleetwood Mac ep on an iPad it automatically loaded on several of our other devices. How cool is that!

Amazon does the same thing, but if you buy it on compact disc, it keeps the digital version for you too. So, albums that I bought before there even was an ipod are in my Amazon cloud now.
I haven't bought any movies through Itunes, but I have purchased some tv shows. The last one was this season of Doctor Who. You can set it to download automatically, so Saturday I go in there and the show's already there to watch.
One thing that bothered me with Apple is that it limits the number of devices that you can download onto and I have sold a couple of computers and I forgot to deactivate them in the Itunes store before the sale. So, then I was limited in being able to download new purchases onto my new computer. You can deactivate ALL devices to free up your quota again, but they only let you do that once every few years. Itunes is a big problem to me.

To pre-order the full, high definition edition of In Your Dreams, change your settings from 720p to 1080p in iTunes. You can do this by going to EDIT —> PREFERENCE —> STORE in your iTunes playlist. iTunes defaults to the lower quality 720p. I think you can still download the higher quality file later even if you preordered the lower quality version, but this will save you some time.

This is often true, but not always. Stevie's Enchanted boxed set was once available on iTunes in the UK, I bought a digital copy then, but it's since been removed from their store for some reason, and now isn't available for us to download to newer devices as purchased in full. I was a little miffed by that, as I had to resort to less-than-legal means to get the album from my iPod touch to my new computer. Small nitpick, I know. I'm not that upset or anything, but your comment just reminded me. With how technology and licensing change so rapidly, some things will inevitably fall through the cracks. I don't have a lot of room in my apartment so I really appreciate digital content, but sometimes it's nice to have a good ol' trustworthy physical copy of something. :)
I was expecting a digital-only release of this, to be honest. Let's face it, outside of the core fanbase, this film is small-time. But I too am a little disappointed. I'm ok with watching TV on an iPad/computer, but when something's labelled a "film" I always want to watch it on a bigger screen. I know there's ways to do that, but realistically, I probably won't be inclined to buy any new equipment to hook my computer up to the tv, so until it's put on some streaming software that's available on my Ps3, this probably will be seen by me on a small screen. Oh well.

Yes, with books I have gone completely digital, but not with music if it's an artist I like, I like a hard copy. If I just like the song and am ambivalent about the artist, it doesn't matter so much.
I guess I didn't know how much releasing a DVD cost. I thought they were easy to put out, since Lindsey has put out a couple for fewer buyers, so I guess I figured IYD would eventually be out on DVD as well. I will be a little surprised if it doesn't make it.
If I get it on tv, I can download it to my DVD recorder and get a copy that way.

The purpose of pre-ordering is often a lower price, and extras that don't come with the standard release. I don't know if that is the case here, but iTunes has pre-orders often, and there's almost always a perk.

Since we haven't heard that any other distributors bought IYD after the festivals, I guess we can give up the hope of the documentary showing up on one of the movie channels. Sunday, I was just looking at a Cher documentary (Dear Mom, Love Cher) about her mother's new country album on Lifetime. If Cher's mother can get space on Lifetime, I know that Stevie Nicks can.
I would also think that PBS or VH1 would be glad to air the documentary. Or what about OWN, since they did that special on Stevie? The documentary is a good promotion for the album, so the more people who see it, the better, even if they don't pay for it.

The new tvs don't have those A/V Jacks any longer. They just have HDMI. The workaround is that you can buy composite and component adapters that will let you connect to HDMI with the A/V connectors, but they cost $50 or more and they vastly compromise the quality of the picture.
Forgetting those old yellow, white and red connectors, there are new adapters you can buy to connect Apple stuff to HDMI, but my Iphone and Ipad take different connections. Apple is converting to the lightning port which is smaller than the old one. My Iphone has it. The ipad doesn't have it yet. The computer does have it, but not in the same size as the Iphone. So, it's maddening.
I know how to make the Apple devices connect to my tv. I just don't want to go through the contortionist steps to do that or to spend extra money to get Apple to play nice with the rest of my technology, when it should just do that anyway, especially when I've already spent about $4000 on the devices themselves. That's why I am making the break from Apple music, movies and tv shows (I still buy apple ibooks, because I am happy to read those on my ipad for eternity).
I would rather that Fleetwood Mac and Co. allowed you to download product directly from their website than that they made them Itunes exclusives.

You are right on some of those TV's dont have jacks to hook up external equipment up to them.Since I've been into electronics servicing professionally and personally for a good 35 years.I've seen everything from the good to bad junk..
I stay away from Apple Ipod and its products because of its way of their doings.
Its like Dell with their computers which you cant exchange parts with any other computer.Like said the gadgets are not cheap.
I would love to get an Apple Imac because I'm fed up with Microcrap broken windows since XP or even Windows 98.
The latest versions suck.
I have video capture boards and video capture devices to capture video from any source.Plus all the bells and whistles of editing software to piece the videos together.
I hope PBS will pickup the docu.Forget VH1.They are crap now just like MTV.
I just record it off the air and it will show up on the TVFreeload site in HDTV.
I wish Stevie and FM strike up a deal with Walmart like other artists have.

That would be good. And I guess whoever bought the digital rights would try to make it available as many places as possible to get the most bang for their bucks.
In fact, there are some internet channels like "Crackle" that don't even have a television component (although I believe it is owned by Sony). It would be great to have it some place like that. I know that's how I watch Jerry Seinfeld's show "Comedians with Cars Getting Coffee."

Well, someone mentioned the pre-order perks that you get, which I didn't know about. Forgive my ignorance, but once you've purchased a video or film from Itunes, is it possible to burn it to a blank dvd? I just assumed this was possible, but perhaps it isn't. I have bought film-clips for individual songs from Itunes in the past, but wasn't able to burn them to disc, but perhaps this has changed over the years? Does anyone know?

You can back up the discs, so that you have this computer file that can be used to restore the movie. But you can't burn it to a dvd that you would be able to view in a dvd player.

Thanks for that Michele - that rings a bell now that you say it. I'm pretty sure that's what I ended up copying (the data files) when I attempted burning the individual video clips all those years ago!

While I understand the annoyance some feel for iTunes and digital music files, I think it's important to recognize how Apple has played such a large part in modernizing our world, cutting back on how many resources and how much energy we use to entertain ourselves.

Admittedly, the low bitrate for music is a sore spot for some, but a non-issue for most of the world. New technology allows albums to be mastered for iTunes, eliminating the loss of file audio quality people experience with MP3s. http://tarekith.com/mastered-for-itunes/

Thanks for the info.
Since I'm an old electronics buff .I love the gadgets in the top photo.
I would not complain if iTunes was dishing out quality file like native Wav.Flac, VOB and any other UN Compressed media .
They want to save much storage space for more files.
I notice todays public dont give a hoot on quality for their money.I refuse to pay good money for crap files. That my only beef about payed digital file downloads.
I'm all for the digital way of doing things but not getting ripped off with their sheety sounding crappy blurry files.
$3.96 was not bad for the EP.I would not pay $8 to $15 for a full cd.dvd digital downloads.

I saw an actor circulate that picture. I should have known it was a meme.
After being innovative for many years, it's frustrating that Apple has slipped behind the curve now. I don't think it's because Jobs is gone. I think they would have had some of the same problems with him there.
It's fun to see pictures of Wozniak with Fleetwood Mac though. He has a lot of free time on his hands these days. We should start a campaign to get him to release The 1982 US Festival on DVD. Everyone tweet the Woz.

I can play it in itunes but it often freezes for a moment or the sound drops out, like it's streaming, although I downloaded it. I guess we will just have to contact iTunes.
I also get a message that the high def 1020 is "too big" to play on my computer although I have a widescreen with 1366 px across and plenty of memory. They are happy to charge me for high def anyway of course.
The file size is too big for me to download it on my iPad or iPod and there is no option to stream, so I'm stuck watching it on this one computer that apparently is "too small" which means the doc will also have degraded quality even if I use Apple TV to watch it, since it first must travel through the computer. I can do it directly on one of my TVs but it takes 4 hrs to be ready to play because it is high def. That doesn't happen when I purchase high def elsewhere.
This is why I despise digital downloads, especially iTunes. If it were via amazon I could play it high def on any of my devices. I guess Stevie gets paid more if it's an iTunes exclusive, even if that limits fan accessibility.

There's always problems. This is why I want a dvd. It's why I always want physical media. So I guess I have to give up music and videos. Someday, when technology actually works, I will jump on the digital downloads. Until that time, life is hard enough without these stupid little headaches. I don't have to be a mechanic to drive my car, and I don't have to be a refridgeration expert to use my refridgerator, but apparently I have to be technical expert to watch a freakin' video.

Not to mention that these digital downloads aren't really "owned" by you in that they can delete them from your account if digital distribution rights change hands (I have had this happen not only on iTunes but on "cloud" services as well - any content stored in a place where the distributor controls access is susceptible; no, they do not refund your money because it was in the fine print that they could remove it without refund when you made the purchase).
As has been said, in the case of iTunes, they can stop you from accessing it on a computer you purchase later if, God forbid, you eventually come to own more than five computers before what they deem to be an acceptable time frame. Even if you do it on what they deem an acceptable timeline, you still have to jump through a bunch of hoops to de-authorize computers that no longer work. I use my computers until they break down, at which point de-authorization is impossible without a complete account authorization reset. It's infuriating.
You're not buying it; you're buying the right to access it, which they can take away. The only solution is to convert it to another file type and store it elsewhere so you don't have to access it using iTunes, something they try very hard to keep you from doing with their special iTunes-only formats and the oh-so-convenient cloud storage they control.

It's interesting that Stevie has become one of those celebs who is aware of the value of her signature and how hard it is to get it these days. That's why in that one clip on some gossip site, Karen insists on getting the guys name so she can inscribe the autograph. Autographs are worth WAY LESS when they are inscribed and are much harder to re-sell on the market.
The funny thing is, if she would sign more autographs - the demand and value for it would go down and collectors wouldn't be finding every opportunity to obtain and sell on ebay.

^ They don't detect your location, but it's all about billing information. You can switch countries on the iTunes store without a problem, but as far as making actual purchases go, it might be a bit of a headache for you unless you have a US or Canadian based payment method. Perhaps someone more savvy than I am might be able to advise you on how to work around all that, though.
I have both a Canadian and British account that I switch between on my iPad. So I've got my copy downloading now. I am ridiculously excited and shamelessly fangeeking right now. But it looks like it's going to take approximately forever to actually download. Yeesh. I'm still too instant-gratification oriented for this stuff.

I live in Sweden and downloaded IYD this morning :) This is how you do it:
1. Buy a US itunes giftcard. I got from a Swedish site and payed it with my swedish creditcard and they sent me the giftcard "code" within an hour to my e-mail.
2. You log out of itunes.
3. change to the us itunes page by changing the flag down in the right corner.
4. Search and find the In your dreams movie and click buy. OR choose something that is free and create your account...
5. Now you will have to create a us itunes account. All you need is an e-mail and a us address. I just used an american friends address and when you have to put down a phone number you can enter any number as long as it is an existing area code.
6. When choosing payment method chose NONE and then create your account.
7. All you have to do now is redeem your gift card and then download the documentary.
So now I have a Swedish itunes account and one us account. The only thing is that I can only pay the stuff on my us account with gift cards. Worked like a charm for me and I had no problem to play it.
Good luck!
Thanks, Angie! I figured something like that must be doable. You've probably helped a good few people on here who felt they were missing out.
The question is, why on earth hasn't this been released beyond North America? It's digital, she's not really doing any promotional activity for it at this point, so what's the point of staggering release dates in different areas?

I liked one part where she was telling Dave she didn't like the guitar part he did for a song and she agrees it would be great for something else, the implication being that it is far from great for that particular song.
Then for GAG she remembers a guitar part that is not what they are playing back and she turns out to be right and says they would have lost if they had bet their house and asks Glenn if he has a nice house and Glenn says he didn't bet his house, as if he's half afraid she might try to collect.
Also, the part where she says it took her YEARS to figure out she was listening to her own heartbeat in her ear and not the sound of soldiers marching really made me laugh. I can see a child imagining it was soldiers marching, but it shouldn't take you YEARS to figure out, even when you're still in grammar school.

Finished watching! Really enjoyed it. It was far from perfect, sure. I wish it had been more of a straight documentary and less wannabe-art-film in its esthetic (what was with that "Edgar Allen Poe" gratuitously sneaking around? I want more candid footage, please). But it was wonderful to see the her creative process unfold like that. And just to see everyone having such a good time. Absolutely put a smile on my face.
Except for the Cheaper than Free segment. They spent an embarrassingly long time self-praising the creation of that turd of a song. I'd mostly forgotten it was even on the album, and I kind of liked it that way. Ohhh well.

I enjoyed this film immensely. Stevie is so much fun to watch and one of my favorite things about her is her playful side and we get to see it a lot thankfully. The behind the scenes creation of the music is my favorite part and what I was most looking forward to. There was not nearly enough of the "song building process" and I so wish we could hear more of the songs in their raw forms. The demos like "Moonlight" and "You May Be The One" sounded great and I so wish we could have heard this demo of "In Your Dreams" that they were gushing over to the point that Dave said it was the reason he didn't like to demo--because sometimes they're hard to top. I'm so happy with the direction they took "New Orleans" instead of where it was going. It's obvious Stevie DEFINATELY knows what she's doing in the studio. I'm so glad she rememered Dave's original solo on "Everybody Loves You" because it's perfect the way it is and that alternate take was not nearly as good. I wanted to shout "way to go Stevie!" after everyone in the room was saying she was wrong. I would have preferred more of a 'straight forward' documentary instead of the quick cuts and flashy effects but I do think it is a must-watch for any Stevie fan. I would love it if they did the same thing again for another album (please, please, please!)
Does anybody have video of the HBO footage they showed with Stevie and Dave playing Rhiannon on the piano and guitar? I cannot believe I have never seen or heard of this!
I was so worried about finding a good way to watch this on my television and after realizing that iTunes movies CANNOT be burned to a DVD and CANNOT be converted easily I bought the Apple TV for $99. I have to say that it is amazing. I can watch every movie/tv show/video file/music file on my computer straight to my TV. The netflix menu is slick compared to the other nightmarish layout my other devices have. If anyone is considering it, I would say go for it. I know I'll get my money's worth out of it.

I loved the whole thing. I do agree that the best parts are the cute quirky candid Stevie moments. I just loved seeing Stevie not being the glamorous mystical witch we see on stage, or the serious mentor character we get in interviews. She was just cute and having fun. I loved seeing her drinking Starbucks and videotaping things and playing with her dog and just being herself, chilling in scrunchies and glasses and sneakers. It's a whole other side of her we don't usually get to see.
My favorite parts were:
Her videotaping her dog in her bed and making that funny highpitched voice talking as Sulamith.
Dave and her singing Natural Woman in bed was adorable too, and when he tries to kiss her and she yells "Get off of me!" and starts squealing. So cute.
I died laughing when Dave throws the lemon and misses the knife and hits Karen in the chest.
Stevie being weird with her video camera walking around the house whispering.
Callais and Stevie hugging and her telling Stevie that she loved her. I think it's so sweet to see the cute little moments in Stevie's relationships.
Stevie telling the men to put their money where their mouths were when she knows she's right over the solo.
Stevie showing off Sulamith's new sweater
Lori and Stevie playing their kazoos.
How every time Stevie has the camera she's narrating and talking so much that it's annoying and just rambling about anything.
Seeing all Stevie's artwork up close.
Seeing her just have fun and let loose and do dumb things. Like switching the lights on and off and dancing with her dog and twirling batons and dancing around the house.

As far as I know this footage was never released publicly. When I saw the movie, I too was wondering where this footage originated from.
Thanks to those who posted helpful comments regarding the IYD download. It turns out that my pre-0rder became corrupted during the automatic download and so was not playable. I alerted Itunes and they refunded my original purchase so that I could re-purchase the film - once I did this, it worked like a charm.
The downside is that the documentary is unbelievably wretched. I didn't have high expectations, but Jesus, it was badly executed. Worst of all, I just could not get over how annoying Stevie is - that whingey-whiney voice and her arrogance. God knows why Lindsey actually wants to record with her again - she would be an absolute nightmare in the studio.
Stevie's irritating manner was too much for me to bear and I had to keep skipping forward, allowing me to watch the movie in about 25 mins.
If it gets released on dvd at some point, I will only buy it if there are bonus features such as the full video clips that were made or the entire Wiltern show from May 2011.
SodaScouts, you're quite correct regarding not owning any Itunes purchases. I encountered a problem with titles that Itunes deleted from their store at some point. After installing an updated version of Itunes, those deleted titles vanished from my account.
I actually installed the latest version of Itunes a few days ago in readiness for the IYD film and it's just awful. It's a real pain having to navigate the new screens and adjust all the settings. I'm now having problems importing cds, burning cds and playback on certain titles. All this for a ****ty movie!

I agree it would have been better with more of the documentary bits showing them working in the studio and less of the music video snippets and such.
Did anyone else notice in the section on FWIW it no longer has the footage of her saying it was about "the drummer" who helped her through the tour? The footage left in the film is from the same conversation, her almost whispering as she's telling the story of that tour and being sober and how she shouldn't have been touring so big so soon.... but the sentence about it being 'the drummer' is not included. Wonder if that was in reaction to all the comments about the ethics of him, as a drug counselor, having a fling with a client..... ?

I agree with you that she has her cringe-y moments of extreme arrogance ("Give this to the owner of the hotel. Some day it will be something really important." Jeesh.) But by many accounts, a lot of people seem to enjoy working with her, and I think the film mostly reflected that.
Although I think Lindsey has an ego to match hers, and the two of them in the studio together often may well be a nightmare. I've never actually seen Destiny Rules, but I'd really like to know. I imagine it would tell quite a different story.
The infamous Thrown Down clip, where Stevie is explaining the difference between Dave's "suggestions" and Lindsey "telling her what to do" was an interesting inclusion in the film, and a bit of a headscratcher for me. The way she wrote off Lindsey's approach. "He was telling me what to do!!!! GRRR!!!! >=(!!!!!" Really Stevie? Sure sounded to me like he was making a suggestion  I guess their history has just made her naturally defensive and a bit flinchy. Though it was great to see them together on this film, working seemingly peacefully and appreciatively. :)
And much as I love IYD, I kind of wish maybe she did listen to some third-party feedback on some of those lyrics (And YCFT as well). But I guess it could be that she didn't really get any in the first place.

lol i have watched this documentary twice now and there isnt anything whiney about stevie at all. i cant even figure out where she would have even attempted to sound whiney.
the part about thrown down is hilarious to me and i can agree with her saying she doesnt like people telling her what to do. its her music and if she wants it sound a certain way then that's her call.
stevie is so funny to me though and i love that she has such a good sense of humor and i find her wackiness so relatable but then again maybe its because i find myself acting like that a lot of the time as well.
i think she is very down to earth and i love that she knows what she wants. i think its better to be that way then not to say anything.
everytime i watch the part about New Orleans i get so teary eyed. its all sad and hard to watch but it does make me appreciate the song even more though.
the part about Moonlight made me wonder who it was that left her. she was really choked up about it though. was it joe walsh?

I think you hit the nail on the head. In reality, Lindsey was just making a suggestion and you can actually tell he was very cautious in the way he was wording it (presumably in an attempt not to offend her). But clearly it didn't come off that way to Stevie. It's understandable given their history, I suppose, but that she would distinguish the two different approaches (when really I think the approach was the same, only the person doing the approaching was different) and highlight them in the documentary is telling, to me. There's an ego there and there's a sensitivity there when Lindsey is involved (or at least, there was at that time) that doesn't exist so strongly with others.
Anyway, I loved the documentary. Planning on watching it again to pick up on anything I may have missed. Like most of you, my favorite part was seeing all of the songs worked out in the studio and getting to observe some more candid moments. I liked the footage of the fireworks show in Italy and also the video recordings of the FWIW and Soldier's Angel and Moonlight demos.

Nailed it. But it's a little disappointing to me that Stevie can't see that after having undoubtedly watched that clip a few times. If I got a chance to see moments in my life replayed from a third-party perspective, I like to think I'd gain a little more self awareness... Oh well. That's our Stevie. ;)

Yes, he was definitely trying not to offend her. I don't know why he bothered saying anything at all, but he said it in the most respectful way possible. Also, she didn't tell him off in that clip, like I guess she thinks he did. He could easily have responded to her Dylan comment. He consciously chose not to, but I know that there was an answer to her right on the tip of his tongue. He just really wanted an album and tour I guess, so he said nothing.

That was hilarious. She checked to make sure it wasn't a chain first. Like she didn't want to give it to some Conrad Hilton executive. She was happy to find out it was family-owned.

I bought In Your Dreams (the film) yesterday and watched it last night. I liked it. It’s certainly not going to win Stevie any awards, but I appreciated her attempt to tell the story behind what is clearly an album she loves. I enjoyed her playfulness and humor and came to see how, with the right person, Stevie is a fantastic collaborator. She’s no pushover and has a clear vision (even if she can’t always articulate it) about what her she wants her songs to sound like.
What I found most disappointing, though, was that we didn’t get to see enough of the creation of the songs. Dave kept interrupting with shots of a mysterious Poe character or the night sky or flashes of lightning. I wanted to hear more of the raw vocal performances and see how the songs evolved from demos to full-fledged songs. I wanted to be in on the conversations that took place about why a certain poem was good enough to set to music. It annoyed me every time Stevie would sit down at the mike to sing and then the scene would fade out and the music video would start to play, or we’d hear the final vocal track when clearly she was laying down an early vocal. I would have saved all the professionally done videos for the DVD release.
The segments I enjoyed most were the recordings of FWIW, New Orleans, and In Your Dreams because we did get to hear how the songs evolved from Stevie’s rough demos to the final product. I was disappointed in the Moonlight and Italian Summer segments simply because they relied too heavily on the final produced versions of the songs. With Italian Summer, I don't think we even got to see Stevie in the studio working on the song. It was just an interview and some grainy video that was shot from her hotel window. And did I miss something or was there nothing on Wide Sargasso Sea?
Nonetheless, it was fun to see Stevie at work. Clearly, she felt invigorated by the making of this album and I hope she can approach making new music, whether it’s with Fleetwood Mac or solo, with the same humor and passion.

There was a whole section on Wide Sargasso Sea.
I agree. Personally, I could have done without the music video portions in the documentary entirely. That could have been a bonus feature on the DVD or something. I would much rather have that time spent on more footage of them working in the studio, like you said.
However, I did enjoy Stevie's personal footage re: Italian Summer, FWIW, etc.

Totally agree. But I wonder how much of that was Dave and how much Stevie.... given that the FM docs always seem to gloss over everything and never really let us see the true workings of how things get done (one or two very minor moments of chafe in each documentary but otherwise the whole experience is portrayed as a wonderful fabulous we all got along thing) which is how Stevie likes things. She only ever wants to show the good parts. This film reinforces my sense that if she ever does do an autobiography it will be the same. It's like eating a meal and realizing you're starving barely an hour later... you think it filled you up but it was really a lot of empty calories. I think this movie was fun to watch but not sure it withstands lots of re-watches... except for select favorite bits.
I think of other truer, grittier rock docs like Metallica's for one, and realize we'll never, ever get something that real from Stevie or from Mac for that matter.

I think in the early days, and LB has admitted as much, he was not diplomatic about her work at ALL much of the time and just ripped on it and said things like "this is crap" and other niceties. (I think it was on Charlie Rose that he admitted the first time she played him a song back when they first met he immediately criticized it. "Nothing changes" he then said a little sheepishly). Once she got out from under his total influence and had other people around her telling her her stuff was great and she had fame/success for her work, she just never seemed to trust that LB's comments came from anything other than jealousy and bitterness and even if he thought some of it was good he wouldn't tell her out of spite (makes me think of her line "You may have the goodness somewhere/but you'll never let me see")
If she won't listen to LB I agree with u she needs SOMEONE to act as an editor. She does seem to think her stuff comes out perfectly the first time and clearly, all good writers refine their raw material multiple times til it's right. But no rules apply to our girl. ;)

You think so? If I think about it, I would guess he probably said something more like what we saw in that Tusk footage, sarcastic, but not outright disparaging, like she'd say is this awful and he'd probably be like, "in a word, yes."
Or it sounded like he often withheld comments and didn't offer the praise she wanted, for instance her talking about his putting Bella Donna on a stair. She even mentioned him not listening to TISL initially, when she first gave it to him and that seemed to bother her still, 20 years after Bella Donna.
From her complaints about him, I imagined more than saying "this is dreck" he was always trying to change her stuff. I don't think he saw her raw material as being horrible. I think he always saw it as something he could work with. Like the way Christine said she heard Dreams and thought it was dull and he immediately saw the possibilities. I think they began clashing when she didn't want him to mold her songs anymore and wanted him to help her realize her vision of them, rather than just making them into his own. So, I'd be surprised to hear a "this stinks" from him when he got her demos, at least.
Now, when he hears her finished solo stuff, that's when I'd think like you do and imagine he hears it and says (maybe silently), "ugh, this is horrid," but nascent material .... I think she clashed with him most not because he told her her stuff was baseless, but because he would take such control over it that she couldn't take it in the direction she wanted, especially when she gained more experience and knew a lot more about music than she did in the seventies. She wanted/needed more of his input in their early years together and then grew more knowledgeable and needed less, but their relationship didn't evolve to accommodate that.

It seems to me that there are a lot of cable channels that would like this. Cher's mother just put out a country album and I watched a special that told how that came about a couple of weeks ago. I think that was on Lifetime. It was more of a BIO program, but we did get to hear the songs on the album. I think this would fit Lifetime's demographics.
Even OWN. OWN did a Celine Dion special, after she returned to work following the birth of her twins. Since they did a Master Class with Stevie, I don't understand why they wouldn't want to buy this.

It still puzzles me that Lindsey didn't correct Stevie regarding a particular lyric from "Smile At You" ("I should have turned around and ran..."). Clearly she was using the wrong tense, but because it rhymed with "can", it was seemingly deemed suitable. Very strange.
What amazes me about Stevie's undeniable arrogance is just how misplaced it is on most occasions. For example, her insistence that "the Italians will love this!" in relation to "Italian Summer". Why the **** would they? It's a dirge with an utterly leaden lead vocal. Now if she were to actually produce something of worth, her 'confidence' might be justified. Until then, I wish she'd shut the **** up.
Perhaps the reason there was no studio footage of "Italian Summer" was because they had to autotune the **** out of her vocal and then patch together a composite track for that final note?

Oh I think he was holding back in that scene coz they were being filmed.
Maybe you and I are sort of saying the same thing. Him coming at her stuff like "this would be better if you did this /changed this/rewrote this part" can kinda come off, if you're Stevie, like saying it's crappy. I mean, she thinks it's golden right out of the box and clearly if he is taking it apart and making it something else he doesn't exactly think it's great. Especially if he immediately starts in with his 'fixes' without saying anything supportive or pointing out the parts he likes
I'll have to find that Charlie Rose clip.. .because he really admits that he was not certainly diplomatic about his critiques of her work and let's face it, Lindsey can be a bit, um... arrogant... at times. One thing I've always thought is that it would suck to be on the receiving end of one of his critiques. He can be quite withering and contemptuous. Or was. Now to me, I totally thought the Tusk Doc- Angel scene, was actually kinda cute. Stevie was singing a bunch of Ooooo's , and she asked Lindsey if it was a bit much, and he replied with " in a word yes", and she laughs.

I agree with all of this 100%. I will just add the Tom Petty story was quite amusing to me, and I love how she reminds Dave about how many Martinis he has had.

Oh I think he was holding back in that scene coz they were being filmed.
I didn't think he was holding back back then. I think he was in Destiny Rules, but I don't think he was trying to come off politely to her in the Tusk documentary. In fact, the way she reacted and covered her face it was like she expected just what he said. It's not like she was going, "Gee, Lindsey is being especially kind to me."
It's just like when they were at the stadium and he yanked on the back of her dress and told her to sit down. I don't think he was worried about how he came off in those Tusk days.
I think "in a word, yes" is the kind of thing he would generally say to her. He says, Oh, who are you Miss Las Vegas? rather than saying things like, "You look stupid."
As far as the songwriting, I don't think he changes her stuff because he thinks it's awful. I think he changes it because he considers it barebones, a skeletal thing, just like his own demos. Clearly, people think he overproduces sometimes, but I think he thinks a demo is something to be worked up. And I think Stevie thinks that too. The only thing that has changed is that she no longer thinks that Lindsey translates her outlines as well as he once did (Soldier's Angel being the exception).
So, no I don't think the fact that he changes her stuff is saying that he didn't think it was good enough. I think he changes it because when someone gives you a foundation, you're supposed to build on it. It's like she told him his SYW songs were cloissonne boxes and hers were unpolished. He told her not to worry. He would polish hers up. Well, he did, she expected him to change them, but she didn't like the finish he gave them.
As far as his not praising her goes, yes it obviously did bother her a lot. With TISL, when he praised it she said that maybe finally Lindsey was just a little bit proud of her. So, she definitely didn't think he gave her enough approval in the past. And so now he's trying to lavish praise on everything, these days.
I know the Charlie Rose comment you're talking about. He said she considered herself a poet even then and he was quick to criticize what she read to him and he smiled and said that hasn't changed. But I don't think by criticizing he goes around saying, "that's trash!" I mean Waddy said he said to Lindsey back when he was trying to get Lindsey to go on the road with him, how can you stand it? How can you bear to work on all this flower and the vine stuff of hers. And I think Lindsey saw something in it that Waddy, and later Christine, didn't see.

That's the thing about Lindsey's comment to me. He's not Mister Word Stickler himself. He's got enough to keep him busy in his own lyrics. So, what's his deal?
He wasn't telling her what to do or being dictatorial at all. But he did know that she was going to get upset. He also knew that she wasn't going to change the lyrics at all in the end. So, I don't know why he even said it, other than to get a rise out of her. No normal person would react the way she did, but he knows she's not normal. He was trying to provoke her.
Same thing in the kitchen with John. I think he was trying to get John to say something about the cost of re-mixing or the prospect of taking John's bass parts out. I think he wanted to spice up the documentary by getting John to say something sarcastic to him. I mean, I think Lindsey likes to work people up sometimes and that he was doing that in the documentary.

Yes Mind as will forget MTV networks.which includes all of its channels including VH1.
All they care about is reality shows and other garbage.
Why they still call it MTV is beyond me.
PBS will be a good outlet. Its free to most viewers and the love this kind of stuff.
If it was the mid 1990's or the 80's MTV/VH1 would platy the crap out of it like they did with Behind the Music and Storytellers.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on our Stevie/Lindsey interpretation.
I do pretty much agree re: the John scene.
Lindsey just has a caustic, condescending side that he clearly has tried to work on. But I think if pushed it's still there. THere was a glimpse of it in his exchange with Mick about the whole double album thing in the same doc. Mick was kinda going on and he said "the listener of listeners" which was grammatically kind of a mess but it was obvious what he was trying to say (the diehard fans) but Lindsey couldn't resist calling it out "The 'listener of listeners??" Mick just let it slide.
I wonder what the relationship with Kristen is like. I'd love to think she would call out his sh*t or give it right back to him, but who knows. I sometimes get the feeling they just give each other a lot of space.

Lindsey just has a caustic, condescending side that he clearly has tried to work on. But I think if pushed it's still there.
I wasn't debating with you whether Lindsey had a caustic, condescending side. I think most of the people in FM do.
My point is, I don't think that he goes around saying "that's ****" to Stevie. I don't really think that's his style. In fact, I think your example makes my point: he goes out of his way to say something more elaborate and roundabout like, "Aren't you Miss Las Vegas?"
Do people take offense as if he's said, "that's ****" yes they do. Do people like Mick mock him? Yes they do.

Had to fix an us--based iTunes account an managed to download the documentary.
Yes people outside the us, it is no problem and very easy. Just get a us itunes gift card online ( google is your friend) and register a new itunes account in the us store. All you have to supply is a valid us adress. So, google for the adress of some hotel.
No problemo.
Anyway, just saw it and I'm stunned. This is fun and informative to watch. Stevie at her best and pure, natural habitat. Cool! I agree with her, that dream must never stop.
Have to watch it again forma more detailed review.

Rosie O'Donnell tweeted yesterday that she saw IYD on iTunes and it was amazing. Perhaps a word-of-mouth/Twitter buzz will promote sales. I always thought IYD should be put on Netflix. Surely once people saw the film, a lot of them would buy the music.
I'm glad you said that. Rosie was fan but I thought something may have changed. Goood to know she is still in Stevie's corner.

Wow! Whatever Stevie wants to do, she'll do.. I really loved how she explained Wide Sargasso Sea. So much so that I went and downloaded the 1993 movie and watched it. Awesome! Have to get around to reading it sometime. The fireworks show in Italy was breath taking, I'm glad she shared that with us. That's really the best part, that they took this song by song. Love that aspect. I adored the fan videos too, especially the one of the soldier. He probably made Stevie's year with that video.
This movie (In Your Dreams) was inspiring and touching, highlighting Stevie's passions with a decent look at the making of the album and the creative process. She really does have a lot to do with it, I mean if she didn't like it, Dave was coming up with something else PRONTO.

Hmm.. I didn't think you *were* debating with me about that point. And I wasn't debating with you. So we're in violent agreement.
Not to belabor the point, I'll just say this. I think Stevie does look to Lindsey for feedback/approval of her work even to this day, because she recognizes he's the superior musician (oops I almost wrote 'magician' LOL). And I think a lot of times in teh past LB withheld any positive feedback -- out of spite, whatever. And to *her*, him just jumping right in with the "fixes" and "improvements" at times *does* feel like him saying her stuff is subpar and it bothers/hurts her. Sure she knows he makes her stuff better, sure she wants him to work on it, but she also wants him to acknowledge the worth of what she's brought to the table. I just feel like sometimes he wouldn't just to be nasty or punitive or hurt her because she hurt him. He certainly never treated her work with the reverence that we see Dave or Mike Campbell or even Mick showing in the doc. That happens when you know someone too well and for too long. That said, he really does seem to be trying in the last couple of years. Which makes it all the more interesting to figure why she clearly doesn't want to work with him on a Mac album any time soon.

I would agree that she looks to him for approval. Ten years ago, she made us all cringe when she said that Lindsey treated her much more gently now, like one of his daughters. And fans were like, "Why would you want him to treat you like his daughter?" I remember he was doing an interview and his daughter was in the backyard and he was saying, "Awww. Look at Leelee on the trampoline," the way you admire kids and egg them on and I think maybe Stevie has felt the need for some of that kind of praise.
Sometimes when she tells the California Dreaming story she'll say that Lindsey must have liked the way she sounded when she jumped in and started singing with him, because he kept playing. He didn't say, "Oh, hey that sounds great," but he didn't stop singing with her. So, she had to deduce he liked her singing from his silent response. And I think that he was mostly that way with her, when he liked something.
Like, The Chain, he probably didn't tell her he liked her demo, but since he wanted to use it for The Chain, he must have liked it. Conversely, according to CAH, he never told Stevie that he disliked Bella Donna and humored her to her face (but CAH said he mocked it by changing the SDMHA title when they were alone). Despite his silence, I think Stevie knew good and well he hated it.
One passage that stuck out to me in Ken's book was Lindsey had been out of the studio and he came back and Christine had worked on YMLF and Ken said that Lindsey really liked her additions and seemed proud of Christine and I thought maybe that didn't happen all of the time. And it did seem like a paternal moment. The friction is created when those moments become paternalism instead.
