So with 69% of the sales in so far Fleetwood Mac's new EP is not in the top 50 so far this week. I know with it only being on iTunes it wouldnt be in the top 5 but I figured top 20 since most people buy digital copies of music these days. The rest of the chart will be updated tomorrow.

that's fine by me. i'd rather them stay on the un-commercial side these days.
i see mostly garbage on that list (with the exception of phoenix and the lumineers).

Fleetwood Mac's EP is not a full length album. Wouldn't they need sale twice or three times a much to register.

this is what i found on billboard:
Unit sales for Albums priced below $3.49 during their first four weeks of release will not be eligible for inclusion on the Billboard album charts and will not count towards sales data presented by Nielsen SoundScan.
*The rule also applies to reissued titles.
*New Holiday/Seasonal titles must meet the minimum threshold through the final week of the calendar year.
*Unit sales for albums or EPs with 8 or less tracks will not be eligible for charting if the retail price is less than the sum of the tracks on the release, multiplied by $0.39.
*Minimum pricing for a multi-disc album (not a single disc with extra tracks), where the extra disc is audio content, will be $3.49 times the amount of discs being made available.

It doesn't surprise me in the least that the EP is barely making a dent on the charts. Their only means of promoting it is via e-mail and via the live shows they played during the past week. And the problem with live shows is that, given the high price of tickets, a good chunk of the audience consists of older, affluent people who don't buy new music or kids who don't buy any music, period. Plus when you factor in the fact that it's currently iTunes only, the sales volume dwindles even further. I think they should count their lucky stars if they managed even 5,000 downloads.

Yup! Yes, yes, yes. Won't buy it until it's on physical media and until it's not mp3s.

i agree with you but i would think with it being up in the charts on itunes that it would mean they sold more than 5k units but then again i guess we shall see when the final numbers are released later on today. i did see a banner for the ep on ticketmaster and was wondering why they dont have the option to buy the ep when purchasing tickets right now. i find it odd that they are trying to sell music from the older incarnations of fleetwood mac instead of the current lineup on ticketmaster.
here is the list of music you can purchase with your tickets now:
Fleetwood Mac - Show-Biz Blues : 1968 To 1970 : Vol. 2 - DD MP3
Fleetwood Mac - Madison Blues - DD MP3
Fleetwood Mac - Men Of The World - The Early Years - DD MP3
They need to be selling the ep and they should put say you will in there as well.

agree re no promotion, it seems almost strange that it sold as well as it, those first few days.
i've never received any emails, only my husband received one from Ticketmaster, seemed entirely random... did you or other people here receive any email promotions?
at the shows it seems that they almost promoted it more before EP came out (and nobody believed that it will really happen :p) than now when it actually is out... again, they should tell people at the show to just download the songs right there from their iphones. shirts people keep buying at shows are $40+:(, so what's $3.96 more? ;) with 10 000 + people at every show, if just the small fraction downloads at the show or on their way home, seems like that would be a huge difference if we are talking about mere thousands sold all together.
NOLA show only, with 50 000+ people there... within a day of that show youtube views of my Sad Angel recording quickly and inexplicably jumped way ahead of all other FM live videos i had (regardless of how crappy they are).
to me, it looks like the only real promotion they have had is itunes banner. i think without that they would probably sell next to nothing, nobody would even know EP's out, just like nobody knows it's out on amazon now.
maybe i'm just missing something.

I don't understand this and people keep bringing it up. Why would someone purchase something from itunes in the middle of a concert? I certainly would never do such a thing because what's the point? I can do it later when I get home and can actually listen to it.

many people these days have a very short attention span, or a very little time; by the time they get home they may get distracted by something else.
people tweet, post pictures and videos as they record them, and comment on FB during shows all the time... so downloading music wouldn't seem that different or far fetched?
some people are very against all this while others are very for it, and still others don't care either way. the fact that someone records or takes pictures with today's equipment may not be really detracting them from actually enjoying the show and paying attention (unless you want to sing way off key and bounce around while recording lol).

The Billboard charts have become somewhat of a joke. They have changed their rules for chart placement so many times in the last 15 years that they have lost credibility. The rules should be adjusted in certain cases (e.g. consumers switching from CD to digital being the most obvious one), but they have made the most random, nonsensical changes in the past, changes that have affected whether a song hits number one or even charts at all! One of the stupidest rules that they had in place was disallowing a song from charting because it did not have a physical (commercial) single, preventing songs that were clearly hits from getting due credit. Well, today, any song that gets airplay has the potential to chart, regardless of a commercial single.

Of all the bonehead rules adopted by Billboard, I think the stupidest is the one counting YouTube hits, which is the main reason why crap like "Harlem Shuffle" and "Gangnam Style" managed to become U.S. chart hits. And I wonder how Billboard is able to tease out and tally on the hits that originated in the U.S., or if they are counting all hits from any viewer in the world. Yes, the artist/label is paid some ridiculously nominal fee by YouTube (like $0.07 per 10 hits). But unless you are Justin Bieber or Psy, it's hard to make any money this way.

I totally agree with you. I think its ridiculous for them to count youtube views. I think I was watching the Today show when they said that for the billboard chart they only count the views in the U.S. and not the entire world. They were saying about PSY's new song Gentleman having 70 million hits worldwide but that it wasn't going to be number #1 on the chart when it first came out because only 20 million or so were from the U.S. So then my question is how do they count it because you would think 20 million hits would qualify for number #1 ya know? I think I read they count Pandora and Spotify too as far as streaming goes but I could be wrong.

Because youtube hits are only one element that goes into the chart placement.
interesting about counting youtube hits... would that be just youtube hits on the vids released by the artist / label, or any youtube posting of a specific song, by anybody (the latter would seem much harder to do)?

yeah thats true. i am wondering how much youtube counts then towards the charts then? like if they are 1/4 of the total or less.
ok found it on the billboard site:
YouTube streaming data is now factored into the chart’s ranking, enhancing a formula that includes Nielsen’s digital download track sales and physical singles sales; as well as terrestrial radio airplay, on-demand audio streaming, and online radio streaming, also tracked by Nielsen.
The inclusion of YouTube streaming data comes nearly one year after Billboard and Nielsen launched the On-Demand Songs chart and added streaming data from leading on-demand subscription services such as Spotify, Muve Music, Rhapsody, Slacker, Rdio and Xbox Music to its chart and tracking offerings.

YouTube keeps track of where the hits are coming from. You can see what countries the hits are from, and even demographics like age and gender.
As far as getting paid by YouTube, unless you are a YouTube partner, the money you get for hits to your videos actually comes from the hits to the ADS on your videos and not the hits to the videos themselves.

Per the Billboard article, the artist can "monetize" any video on YouTube that is claimed by the copyright holder. This probably explains why there are so many outright copyright violations, i.e., illegal uploads of commercially available works, but relatively few are taken down. The copyright owner is making money! Albeit, a very small sum which actually works out to $0.02 per 10 hits.

lol so it seems i made what? ~ $4 for Stevie Nicks' people by posting my recording of Landslide? which means band is actually making some very small money if they let people film at their live shows ;) :p

here is that regular text / explanation you get:
Matched third party content
Your video may include a song owned by a third party. For example, this might be a song playing in the background or someone performing a song.
To hear the matched song please play the video on the right. The video will play from the point where the matched content was identified.
Your video is available and playable.
Here are the details:
"LANDSLIDE", musical composition administered by: 1:24

Content ID Claims - Videos that have been matched by Content ID may be monetized, blocked or tracked.

frankly, and in the light of discussions we had in this thread plus looking at itunes charts during their first week, it doesn't seem to add up... #31 seems much higher chart position than what i would expect. we'll see whether they crack first 50 on billboard.
does anyone here have any idea what share of the market is itunes vs amazon vs physical stores vs spotify, rhapsody, other streaming, etc?

i actually think this number is lower than what i thought it would be considering they were #5 on the iTunes charts for most of the week. i would say that most people buy their music on iTunes these days so i figured they would end up in the top #20. hits daily double is very accurate so they could go up or down a spot or two but not very much.

this is what i found on billboard:
That's the Lady Gaga rule. Her 99 cent first week release was the culprit. Kind of like the exclusive release exclusion rule because of the Eagles.
I'm not really sure where HitsDailyDouble chart gets their sales info but it's off from the Billboard 200 and SoundScan both on its Top Albums and on its sales data. It may just be the closing date difference but there's a significant sales number discrepancy between the two for a lot of those albums.
They definitely didn't sell 11k last week, and they're coming in at #48 on the Billboard Top 200.
Also, I'd have to argue that the Billboard charts are not all crap. The Billboard Hot 100 is, and it pissed people off royally when they changed it to include web impressions. But the sales charts are straight from SoundScan which includes almost all retailers. (It also includes venue album sales if the artist's merch person is up on reporting it.) Same with the radio charts. Those are BDS monitored/station reported spins.

Ah, got it now.
It looks like they're all over the chart for the May 18th issue:
Extended Play
#48 - 200 Albums (debut)
#9 - Independent Albums (debut)
#14 - Digital Albums (debut)
Rumours
#149 - 200 Albums (reentry)
Greatest Hits
#172 - 200 Albums
The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac
#194 - 200 Albums (reentry)
I think this shows that there is still demand for Fleetwood Mac to issue new material, in spite of what Stevie might think.

Taking five years off may not have been a good idea for LL Cool J. His new album, Authentic, debuts at 23, his first non-top ten studio album since 1995. It is also his lowest charting since his 1985 debut Radio. It also starts at 7 on the R&B Albums, his worst ever (Radio peaked at 6).
Even so, he does have the highest charting album by a veteran artist for the week. The next highest is Fleetwood Mac's Extended Play which starts at 48, their worst since 1973's Mystery to Me. The combination of the album being a digital only release and four songs in length may have hurt the release.

We all spend a lot more time examining these things than they or their (so-called) management will do in 2013. The new stuff has really grown on me the more I've listened to it. But at this point in the 21st Century--and going back ten years or so--the amount of money they generate from touring (whether Unleashed or nameless) will dwarf the money they make off new work by such a great factor that it probably barely factors in their daily concerns as they work through this year on the road. As they've mentioned over and over again, Fleetwood Mac is a big machine employing dozens of people whenever they reunite to tour, and as we all know, the ticket prices never go down. And they are all onstage on performance nights for a long time, especially Lindsey. It's a good thing he's the youngest of them. I still care deeply about them and their work, but it's 2013--not 1975 or 1977 or 1979 or even 1982 or 1987--and the likelihood of them getting together after this tour to make an album seems less and less likely. I wish that wasn't true, and I hope I'm wrong, but that's my gut feeling. I hope they prove me wrong.

^^If I had a dollar every time somebody proclaimed that this is the final Fleetwood Mac album/tour/concert, etc...
Although Fleetwood Mac can be very predictable in some ways, especially in terms of their live shows, this whole Extended Play project has totally caught me off guard. For me, it's not just a handful of songs that they "just threw out there." It is perhaps the ballsiest thing they have done... ever.
-It's their first EP ever.
-It's their first indie release.
-It's their first digital-only release.
-They performed songs from it before its release (which has only been done a handful of times before).
-It's the first Rumours-era project that was primarily produced by an outside producer.
-It's the first Rumours-era release that didn't include any songs with Stevie singing the lead vocal.
But more than anything else, it proved that Fleetwood Mac is willing to work outside of the boundaries of the big label machine and they are willing to do it on the cheap, i.e., at Lindsey's home studio. They've essentially given up on the pretense that recording must be a grand affair with state of the art equipment, bloated budgets and endless months in the studio. Yes, computers may have decimated the music industry, but they have also enabled artists to render highly polished recordings cheaply using a Mac Airbook. Sure, their music is not going to sell the way it used to on a big label. But when recording costs are minimal and when the gross margin on return is higher (since they don't have label people salaries to pay), it helps to offset the disappointment with selling fewer copies. As one of the few bands of their generation that have not completely dived into the oldies circuit pool (although they are this close), I think they do feel an obligation of sorts to "preserve the Fleetwood Mac brand" by trying to at least maintain some semblance of being an ongoing, creative concern.

-- Fleetwood Mac, "Extended Play" (EP) (No. 48): After a 10 year wait, Fleetwood Mac has returned to the Billboard 200 chart with a new studio album. The legendary band's Extended Play (EP) bows at No. 48, selling 9,000 copies in its first week.
The self-released set, issued on the LMJS imprint (an acronym for the first names of the four members of the band), is exclusive to iTunes. The four-song effort is the group's first release outside of the Warner Music family of labels since 1971.
The band's last full-length album, “Say You Will,” released on Reprise/Warner Bros., arrived on the chart almost exactly 10 years ago this week. The set debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the chart dated May 3, 2003. To date, it has sold 864,000 copies in the United States.

I'm actually stunned Fleetwood Mac finds themselves in the Top 10 in album sales this week at iTunes and not just because it's a rare display of respectable taste among digital music consumers. The real surprise to me is Lindsey Buckinghame settled for an EP rather than a double LP. Buckingham is ambitious, prolific, and relentless as a musician and songwriter. Four songs in stead 40... count me surprised.
That's the only surprise in this week's iTunes chart. The rest is predictable and uninteresting to me but I'll tell you about it anyway. You're welcome.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are #1 with "Can't Hold Us" and our resident pop critic Chris Morgan says this is better than "Thrift Shop," which is akin to being the best gay bar in Riyadh but there it is. Pink, Timberlake (and can I please say whatever commercial he's just done is ****ing appalling?), Icona Pop (that's a new name for me this week), and Selena Gomez all have Top 10 singles. Gomez continues to sell past the expiration date of a child star. Somehow she dated Justin Beiber, had a hit show on Disney, and managed to fly below the radar of cocaine and the Kardashians. I guess it can be done.
On the albums front, country is king. Kenny Chesney is #1 and Blake Shelton checks in at #8. Looking at names other than those mentioned above, we've got an outfit called Randy Rogers Band in the Top 10. This is another group I've not heard of and will have to investigate. Michael Buble has been knocked off the top spot but remains in the Top 10 along with Imagine Dragons and Fall Out Boy. FOB has named their album Save Rock And Roll. I'm not sure if they're being ironic or not.
