Lindsey Buckingham, not Nicks, carries Fleetwood Mac at Xcel Center

Article by: JON BREAM , Star Tribune Updated: April 29, 2013 - 5:57 AM

Live-wire Lindsey Buckingham, not croaky Stevie Nicks, carried Fleetwood Mac Sunday night at the X.

Lindsey Buckingham wore the exact same outfit again. Black leather jacket, black V-neck T-shirt, black boots and, presumably, the same bluejeans.

That’s what the rock star sported when he performed a solo concert in November at the Dakota Jazz Club, the most impersonal (and loudest) performance probably ever in that intimate space. On Sunday at the sold-out Xcel Energy Center, he gave one of the most impassioned performances ever in a Twin Cities arena, this side of Bruce Springsteen.

Oh, sorry, it wasn’t actually a Lindsey Buckingham show. It was Fleetwood Mac, the band that made him famous. But singer/songwriter/keyboardist Christine McVie retired in 1998 and Stevie Nicks — Buckingham’s former lover whose romance and breakup has been the subject of many of the band’s songs — needed a good half of Sunday’s 2 ½-hour show to warm up her voice.

Granted, her voice is lower, harsher and less fluid than before, but her versions of “Rhiannon” and “Sara” were so croaky and lifeless that she couldn’t have placed in the top 5 in a Stevie Nicks sound-alike contest.

Nicks, 64, finally found her voice for “Landslide,” a duet with Buckingham, his voice and acoustic guitar. After saying she usually dedicates the song each night to a family member, Nicks said on Sunday, it would be a rare dedication to her “one and only husband,” Minnesotan Kim Anderson, who was in the audience and, of course, is no longer her husband (they divorced after a short marriage; he was the widower of her best friend, who died of leukemia).

Nicks’ incurable romanticism has fueled her art and Fleetwood Mac. She got so inspired during “Landslide” on Sunday that at song’s end she and Buckingham blew kisses at one another. Of course, they followed that with a scorching “Never Going Back Again,” during which Buckingham sounded maniacally determined on vocals and guitar and Nicks offered credible vocal harmonies.

Although she did only a few slow-motion revolutions of the famous Stevie Nicks dervish dance, she hit her vocal stride, delivering “Gypsy” with conviction while facing drummer Mick Fleetwood (another of her exes).

She finally became the bewitching Nicks of yesteryear on “Gold Dust Woman,” investing the song with mystery, passion and her trademarked accouterments of shawls and scarves (the top hat would come later, thank you).

But while Nicks clearly was a favorite of the 16,000 fans on Sunday, it is Buckingham who elevates Fleetwood Mac into an exciting arena attraction 36 years after the blockbuster “Rumours” album made them one of the biggest bands of the 1970s. On Sunday, he was a live-wire ringmaster, a guitar monster, a heartfelt singer, a hammy performer and, as Mick Fleetwood put it, “our inspiration.”

With all of the Buckingham/Nicks soap-opera songs, the comforting, buoyant tunes (and sweet vocal harmonies) of McVie were missed. The band did her “Don’t Stop,” with Buckingham and Nicks alternating as lead singer on the verses. But this really was the Lindsey Buckingham Show.

Buckingham, 63, tried to provide context with his introductions to songs. For instance, he explained that “Big Love” was written as a “contemplation on alienation” but now he sees it as “a meditation” on change. Indeed, his transformation to de facto frontman of Fleetwood Mac has helped the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group maintain its magic.

Yes, but they need each other to sell out the large arenas, it's not all Stevie's presence that makes these shows what they are.

well, if it makes anyone feel any better, this reviewer clearly is neither a SN or a LB fan.

he's pi**ing on both of them at every turn, as much as possible.

while the Dakota may have not been LB's favorite venue (which he apparently said to some aftershow m&g attendants as a reason he omitted to do a SMAP request, and maybe this reviewer overheard that conversation?), the reviews at the time were still raving about his Dakota solo show.

Jon Bream is a crabby music snob who pretty much always has some sort of ridiculous complaint about a show. I've never seen a review of his that didn't have some sort of bitchy critique.

THIS. When people are going on about how boring Stevie is now, and how it's all the same, I'm always like.. she's the biggest attraction here, like it or not.

I LOVE Lindsey with all my heart, but he doesn't have the fanbase as a solo artist as Stevie does.

But I would love to see an intimate Lindsey show, it would be amazng.

lol. and the circle continues... can't we all just get along, people? :D

on their own none of them - neither Stevie, or Lindsey, or Mick - have a fan base or general audience interest that Fleetwood Mac does.

this FM tour has sold out or almost sold out arenas for every show so far, and in some large cities, twice. none of them can do nearly as well on their own (although some of them, if they support some other big act, like Rod Stewart recently, can come close).

going into the fleetwood mac show on friday everybody around me kept talking about how amazing stevie is and how much they love her but when the show was over all i could hear was everybody saying how amazing lindsey buckingham is and how much energy he has. he totally wins people over by the end of the show. my in-laws came to see stevie but were so impressed by lindsey and his amazing guitar playing that was all they talked about on the way home. i love that!

Yes, his fan base isn't as big, but without him they would not be getting the stellar reviews they've been getting. And as a Lindsey fan, on some levels I do wish he had a bigger solo fan base. But on the other hand, I can go to many intimate shows and see him solo without breaking the bank and always get a spectacular performance and excellent seats. I don't have to shell out $$$ and see the same tired performance she's been giving for years.

Well, I'm sorry. If someone is a main attraction, and doesn't live up to it, because she simply does not perform towards the expectations, and someone else saves the show, then I cannot critisize a reviewer when he mentions right that.

I couldn't care less if they played Dakota jazz clubs. As long as they bring the oomph that is needed for a great performance. I simply don't understand why her participation only is enough argument for you guys.

oh i'd much rather they do play small clubs, no question about that!

to be fair, she's been much more on the ball this tour than in 2009, from what i've heard of 2009 and witnessed this year. she's been happy to be there and giving it a fair effort. it's been a good tour, so far, and i hope it continues.

it's hard to compete with Lindsey. not many performers are in "only him and Springsteen" league. and, he's been trying to hold back on Stevie's songs and give her room to shine on her own, as i've already complained elsewhere (prime examples: GDW and SOTM, where i really miss his guitar antics).

It doesn't change the fact that 90% of the setlist consists of material that is over 25 years old. I think, no matter what, that qualifies as a "sad nostalgia act" per your definition. Although, for some reason, when Lindsey sings an old song, it's not "sad nostalgia," but when Stevie sings an old song, it IS "sad nostalgia."

For the record, Stevie's IYD tour garnered mostly positive reviews too. And Stevie has gotten great reviews for this tour too; this one Minnesota numbnut notwithstanding. You really have no basis for making the claim that Lindsey is the only reason why they are garnering "stellar" reviews.

Yes... if by "oomph," you mean playing along to a pre-recorded backing track and giving the same canned speeches night after night. I think I'd much prefer a live experience that was, in fact, LIVE. Not some kind of hybrid version of "live." You get what you pay for.

Not sure I agree with you BUT I do agree with the reviewer with regards to some of Stevie's performances. Gold Dust Woman, and particularly Rhiannon are tired, lifeless, stale and boring. Even being there live and in person couldn't save these songs for me.

Stevie was way more than I expected at the show, she was a gem. And so sincere. I heard equal amounts of praise for both Lindsey and Stevie.. Along with the rest of the band. They are all fantastic. And Stevie is doing more than 'participating', it's extremely sad If you think that all she's doing. At 64 I probably won't be able to belt out those songs and twirl around in platforms.

And she doesn't have to live up to ANYONE'S expectations. She does her own thing and if you don't like it, don't see the shows.

Most the reviews from In Your Dreams and Live 2013 are saying Stevie has been fantastic. Reviews are only one person's opinion, anyway! One sided and usually bias. From the sounds of the applause after each Stevie, Lindsey, and Mick drum solo, the shows have been great all around. That's really what you have to go by in the end.

I have been going to Fleetwood Mac shows since the mid-seventies...some people are there for LB....some are there for Stevie...and some are there for both of them... and Mick and John...I like what they both (LB and Stevie) bring to the table...last year I saw LB at a small club in New Orleans doing his solo thing and it was great - the man is a guitar virtuoso!!!...I also saw Stevie along with Melissa Etheridge and Gladys Knight last September at the New Orleans Arena and Stevie was on fire that night, I witnessed from the 5th row...her rousing version of New Orleans brought the house down....and touched the hearts of the whole audience...

For a lot of us it's still the ethereal, witchy atmosphere she (Stevie) emits. Not everyone appreciates this, but I agree that this is what makes Fleetwood Mac great for everyone.. the gypsy, earthy feel Stevie brings.. the amazing guitar shreds Lindsey brings, and Mick's crazy eyes and funky dance he does at the small drum set. :blob2: Christine was more polished and neat in her style and people appreciated that too, when she still performed with them.
FM is a zillion different things all rolled into one. I agree Stevie's voice isn't what it used to be (years and years of singing and abuse) but I don't think Lindsey's voice is great anymore, but at least he can tear it up on the guitar, and Stevie can please us with her tambourine and twirls :) And that adorable smile that heals my soul!

To Lindsey's credit, he sounds 100% better than he did ten years ago on the SYW tour. I was listening to SYW tour audio the other day, and Lindsey was off-key, growling, bellowing, etc. He must be doing something right!

Did anyone here actually GO to this show? Or is this thread just for people to take sides:distress:

I wonder if other bands who have more than one songwriter and singer get this same thing, where people really only are a fan of one and not the other, and could care less when they perform at a huge concert...

I go to see Fleetwood Mac for BOTH Lindsey and Stevie together. I love them separately and apart in their own shows and their solo albums, but I get a high I cannot explain when I see a "Fleetwood Mac" show with them together, singing or playing guitar on EACH OTHER'S songs.

I own all the solo albums of BOTH, and when they come to my area for a solo show, I see BOTH of them.

I do think some people cannot take criticism of their favorite. That's natural and we are all their biggest defenders of course! But from what I am reading, I can honestly see both sides. I see where Stevie has her shortcomings and I see why people might feel the way they feel about a Lindsey show. Personally, I try not to think too hard about any of that for either one of them, because I am just happy to see them LIVE at all. Solo, together...what have you. I'm grateful. And hey if Christine was here for a tour or promoting something on her own, I'd be there in a heartbeat!:blob1:

It makes me a little sad that there are people who go see Fleetwood Mac and totally ignore Stevie, or don't care about anything to do with her. Or people who go to the bathroon when Lindsey is giving his all in a guitar solo. People who just seem so divided. The world is full of all kinds of people though, and not every person is going to please everybody:)

But I know for myself, I am not a divided fan.

I dont even have to read the actual post...all I have to do is read the name of the person making the post and I can predict with about 98% accuracy if the post is negative and derogatory to Stevie or if it is how Lindsey is the genius and is the only life in the show. It is pretty sad actually....FM wouldnt be FM without them both and Mick and John. Leave your negative attitude at the door or just dont post here anymore.

Listen, dude, I just gave a comment about an officially released review. Don't accuse me of talking negative and derogatory to Stevie. The reviewer did. I just said that it is a review with observations that someone can make. It's not the first time that Lindsey is portrayed as the master of ceremony during FM liveshows, and that his energy saves their legacy in concert.

Great video of Lindsey and Mick playing Gypsy

I shouldn't have ever said Stevie is the main attraction at any FM show.. That was idiotic. Just for the record, Ledgies. I got a little passionate and protective of Stevie baby when I read that review.im over it :)

Yes... if by "oomph," you mean playing along to a pre-recorded backing track and giving the same canned speeches night after night. I think I'd much prefer a live experience that was, in fact, LIVE. Not some kind of hybrid version of "live." You get what you pay for.
Hey, you've got a point here. I hate those prerecorded tracks and speeches as much as you do, honestly. As much as I hate the fact that they play with a shadowdrummer. But, apart from that, it is not the oomph that I mean. He brings something else, and you know what I mean.

All I can say is this is so typical of this board.
With that said, I think I am just going to stay in lurker mode forever. Most of you people are just too pissy and mean spirited for me. Cya....

You took the words right out of my mouth! Personally, I respect them ALL but still am and always will be a STEVIE FAN for so many reasons. After all, she and only she was the one who caught my attention when I first saw the Rhiannon, Rosebud documentary, performance in 1975. After that one performance, I went out and bought the Buckingham Nicks album and that was the beginning of my fandom which has lasted up until the present! Maybe she was overly emotional at this concert because her ex husband Mr Kim Anderson was there, who knows? At least he cared enough to be there and that says a lot about Stevie's ability to create lasting relationships with all or most of her friends and family members! Sure it would be great if her voice was like it was all those years ago, I won't deny that, because that was the voice I loved and have loved all these years but time changes everything and everyone eventually. If I want to hear her voice the way it was all I have to do is play those recordings again, eg: "Forest Of The Black Roses", "Violet And Blue", "Blue Lamp", "Sleeping Angel", "Rock A Little", "Cathouse Blues", "Crystal", "Planets Of The Universe", "Doing The Best I Can",(I bet if she had the chance she could do a killer version of this right now just to let the naysayers know she still has a voice even if it's not the voice she is famous for), etc...! These words seem very appropriate right now, "The People, They Love Her But Still Their The Most Cru...el"

I saw 4 shows on the SYW TOUR...and I agree that I like Lyndsey's Voice on this Tour much better...I think he is doing some great vocals this tour...
To Lindsey's credit, he sounds 100% better than he did ten years ago on the SYW tour. I was listening to SYW tour audio the other day, and Lindsey was off-key, growling, bellowing, etc. He must be doing something right!

we all hate pre-set speeches, and he probably knows since he's been mixing them up lately and going off the cuff during some of them. especially during solo tours where he reacts to audience and changes around if some audience members are particularly persistent.

re backing tracks, let's be fair - he had backing tracks during only 4 songs, and 9-10 he was doing solo just him and his guitar.

(and his prices were anywhere between $25 and $200, depending on the venue so not sure which price are we talking about? plus we all know you don't get what you pay for with many many performers and you pretty much always get way more with LB )

you all may not be into that, but i'd rather he does rocking songs with the backing track, than no rocking songs at all. and most everybody who did see him at his One Man Show was sold on his approach once they experienced the show and its intensity live. (but we've been through this discussion over and over.)

i guess you all want Tusk dropped from FM set too considering there is no Trojans anywhere in the arena other than background video? or maybe backing tracks would be ok during LB solo shows if he'd have a video of himself playing them as a backdrop? ;)

So why are you doing it then? Even if you say maybe, you're still making an assumption based off of nothing. I'm not even sure what her emotions last night have to do with anything. I didn't notice anything about her demeanor that was off last night, neither did anyone else as far as I can tell.

Actually I would not mind if they did drop "Tusk" the way it is performed today, which is still "live" in the sense that it is played/triggered by a keyboard containing horn samples. I much preferred Christine on the accordian!

you know, i really hated what Tusk has become live in 2000s. but SWS tour version was enjoyable again to me; and especially this 2013 version nestled between NTF and SOTM i think works nicely.

that said, how cool would it be if Christine would want to replace or add to the marching band recording with her accordion again at those London shows?? :] i did enjoy watching those old Mirage-era live versions and although they don't sound too spectacular in videos i've seen, the band, especially Lindsey and Christine, seemed to have had tons of fun playing it. :xoxo:

This reminds me of someone I used to drink with at a dive bar here in Denver. He always liked to tell me about all the emotional drama in Stevie's songs, and how she was just SO EMOTIONAL that songs had to be dropped from the setlist because she just couldn't bear to sing them anymore.

Because it hurts too much.

He was talking about Destiny Rules and Running Through The Garden.

He was one of those fans who sees far more mystery, witchery and secret love in Stevie's songs than is actually there.

Lindsey's speeches really don't take up enough time in the setlist for me to care about them either way. It's not like they're Sardonic World. I think they're amusing and I don't mind needling him about them and finishing a sentence or two for him, but as long as he brings new energy to his performances every concert, I find it hard to get up in arms over the fact that we get a few minutes of cycles. Isn't that weird?

Fleetwood Mac review: Wait, this is starting to sound familiar
By Ross Raihala

[email protected]
Posted: 04/28/2013 12:01:00 AM CDT

Something felt rather familiar about Fleetwood Mac's Xcel Energy Center show Sunday, April 28, and it wasn't just the band's songs, which remain some of the biggest-selling, most widely known of the rock era.

Instead, it was the set list -- the very order in which the group played those songs -- that was secondhand news. Four-fifths of Fleetwood Mac's most famous lineup last headlined the downtown St. Paul hockey arena in March 2009, and Sunday they performed a whopping 17 of the same songs. Of course, with a band like this, there are hits they're always going to play ("Don't Stop," "Go Your Own Way," "Landslide"). But this wasn't just hearing the same old numbers four years later, but hearing them largely in the same sequence.

Just like in '09, "The Chain" led into "Dreams" early in the show and then "Big Love," "Landslide" and "Never Going Back" occupied the same three-song stretch at the midway point. And once again, the sequence of "I'm So Afraid," "Stand Back" and "Go Your Own Way" wrapped things up and opened the door for virtually the same encore, with "Say Goodbye" added to "World Turning," "Don't Stop" and "Silver Springs."

So what was different this time around? Well, most notably, Stevie Nicks was much more present and didn't let her energetic frenemy Lindsey Buckingham steal the spotlight quite as much (even though the crowd cheered at nearly everything he did). At 64, her voice has lost much of its power, but she still looks terrific and she seemed to be enjoying herself much more Sunday night than four years back.

Buckingham reportedly wanted to record a fresh disc for 2013, but Nicks couldn't get her act together in time. They did manage to work in one brand-new track, the upbeat and poppy "Sad Angel," and one number they dug out from the vaults, "Without You" (an unreleased snoozer from the pair's pre-Mac band Buckingham Nicks).

They also upped the total number of songs drawn from 1979's "Tusk" -- the expensive, Buckingham-led flop that derailed the band's career -- from three to four. In addition to Nicks' ballad "Sara" and Buckingham's monstrous "Tusk," they worked in "Not That Funny" and "Sisters of the Moon," with Buckingham taking the opportunity to once again harangue the crowd about the album's initial failure. (Dude, it's been 34 years. Let it go already!)

Beyond that, the band kept to the oldies, with the vast majority of the songs originally written and recorded in the mid-to-late '70s. It was a nice surprise to hear "Eyes of the World," a deep cut from 1982's under-appreciated "Mirage" album, although almost any one of the other album cuts from that era would've been a better choice. As always, Christine McVie was missed. She retired in 1998 and while she was always a distant third behind Buckingham and Nicks, her softer, more romantic songs lent the band a certain humanity they've been lacking in the years since.

Sentiments like this seem to pop up periodically, which is puzzling to me. If you're not a Stevie fan, fine, but in 2011 she put out her most criticallly lauded album ever and in the two years that followed, her solo shows routinely included 6 of that album's tracks, with 3 others performed live at one time or another. Her performances weren't tired, and she didn't come across as a nostalgia act.

she released a f***ing masterpiece--and her best setlist ever.

if only she'd bring some of that verve to the mac. could u imagine this ep with at least one song worthy of Ghosts Are Gone!? (which, yes, might be her second greatest solo song EVER.)

LOL, this is an amusing thread. As a long-time FM fan, I see some things don't change. What has changed is the band's quality. I am sorry to say that even Lindsey's new stuff is rather dull, judging from the EP. Stevie has been phoning it in for three decades, so now she doesn't even pick up the phone anymore.

Both of these reviewers seem to hit some hard truths: One says Stevie is croaky and Lindsey steals the show. No surprise there. The other says the set list is rusty and uninspired. Again, no surprise.

What cracks me up is that people still take sides between Lindsey and Stevie, and a lot of the same old arguments come up. Both sides make good points. But the reality is neither Lindsey nor Stevie are stellar right now. Sure, Lindsey rips it up on stage, and Stevie still has a lot of the old witchy charm. But the band is stale, end of story.

On and by the way, I'll agree with the first reviewer about Lindsey's One Man Show. I didn't go to any shows, but what I heard and saw on YouTube struck me as way off. Lindsey missed the target by a wide mile on that one. What he should have done was leave the backing vocals, cheesy backing tracks and about two thirds of his guitars behind. Then take a guitar and stand -- or sit! -- in front of the mic and do quiet, introspective versions of old songs and play some new stuff.

But even Lindsey admittedly is flawed. SWS was tremendous, but the EP is lackluster, and the OMS was just him doing by himself what four guys generally have done. (Who cares? I've seen solo performers with a looper put on more interesting performances.)

As for IYD, yes, it was a good album. Better than anything Stevie has done since The Wild Heart, in my view. But the reason it got such a positive response was because most of everything else in between has been crap. So in comparison, good seems great. IYD isn't great, but it's damn good.

I wouldn't go by the youtube videos for OMS. I really do think it's so much better in person. I loved it. The backing tracks were only on 4 songs and I actually liked them a lot on two (Come and ISA), and didn't even notice them on one of the songs (Stephanie). If you had gone to the show and didn't like it, fine. But unless you've experienced it in person, I don't know how you can really draw a conclusion on what the shows were like. I love the intimate atmosphere and really grew to appreciate many of those songs in a way I never had before.

I can't argue against the experience of being at the show, nor would I want to. I'm sure if I had gone to a show, I would have had fun.

However, I was careful to say what I know of the show is from the recordings and the YouTube postings, and what I saw there did not move me. I would have loved a completely different approach. And I bet I would be saying the same thing, had I gone to a show. It's possible to enjoy the performance when you're at the venue and then not like the recording or video of it. Happens all the time. And what I saw and heard on recordings gave me the sense that Lindsey has no confidence in himself as a solo performer. Leave the effects and the tricks at home, and just play, man! That is all I am saying.

If you loved the show, that's great. I'm glad you did.

We differ here. I think OMS was awesome. I really think it's wrong to use prerecorded vocals in fullband liveenironment, like they do now. The open and transparant use of backingtracks on a few songs in OMS was not my choice, but no problem at all; it did not mask anything.

The production of IYD was as aweful as these tracks. Only Without You stands out as the most harsh and dreadful recording ever. Metallic paint without an underground.

IYD doesn't bother me that much, except in some places where it sounds like Dave and Stevie are stuck in the 80s. The same can be said of Lindsey, though. Listen to Sad Angel.

Honestly, I just don't get these people anymore. Lindsey should have take a cue from the guy who produced the This Is 40 tracks and used it as a guidepost for future recordings. Instead, it's back to the over-produced studio trickery that's gotten kind of old, in my view.

Wow, I don't think what I wrote was so hard to understand, especially after I went back and explained it. Let me give it another shot: It may have sounded fantastic live to those who attended the show. It's possible the acoustics in the venues were tremendous and the sound was stellar. But, sorry, the sound on the digital release was crappy. It was thin and synthetic. To my ears, it's very unappealing.

Sounds like you liked it. That's great.

Uh, so he has an "informed opinion" if he decides in the end that it's good, even though he didn't go to the shows? But if you don't go to the shows, but listen to the recording and decide it's crap, it's not an informed opinion. Is that what you are saying?

On and by the way, I'll agree with the first reviewer about Lindsey's One Man Show. I didn't go to any shows, but what I heard and saw on YouTube struck me as way off.
where does this say that you listened to the digital release? i guess after your additional explanation quoted below i can now understand that was what you tried to say. but that was not what you said.

Uh, so he has an "informed opinion" if he decides in the end that it's good, even though he didn't go to the shows? But if you don't go to the shows, but listen to the recording and decide it's crap, it's not an informed opinion. Is that what you are saying?
:laugh: let me explain this to you slowly, like you were apparently trying to me: he has more informed opinion than you IF he heard digital release and you haven't.

you didn't clearly say that you've heard digital release, and thinking logically (that may have been the wrong choice ) i couldn't predict you were willing to spend 90 minutes of your life and $10 for digital release when you were not willing to spent any of that to actually go hear the show live when it was in your neck of the woods, despite your long-standing love for this guy's music.

to conclude, just to make it really clear :p - if you both heard digital release, your opinions are both informed.

i will still never understand why you decided to skip on actually hearing what he had to offer. it just always seemed like trying to make some kind of point (kinda like "you don't want to do acoustic show the way i want it, i will not even try to go see what you actually put together"), unnecessarily.

Look, Elle, I don't think Lindsey Buckingham is infallible as a musician. I have followed the man for decades and absorbed as much as I can from him for my own purposes. He is my favorite guitarist. No one else does what he does.

But he makes missteps, and he has made several lately. You didn't like the This Is 40 songs. I do. I disagree with you, but I don't give you a hard time about it. You like the crappy, synthetic sound of OMS, I don't. I could tell you your ears need cleaning, if you like the horrible sonics on that awful recording, but I don't. It doesn't sound good to me. If I had been at the show, I would have loved to see the man doing his thing. But when I learned that all he was doing was replacing the backing band with pre-recorded tracks, I didn't want to waste my time. That was my decision, I stand by it, and I feel good about it.

None of this changes the fact the sound is crappy. None of it changes the fact that the production on the EP is even crappier.

Have I made myself clear?

well, maybe you just look at videos on youtube, without sound... perhaps because your sensitive musician's ears cannot stand the crappiness of it.:D but most people also listen to stuff they are looking at on youtube.

To me, you did. And I agree with you on THE SOUND of OMS, not on the artistic quality of OMS.

For This EP, I totally agree that the agressive, metallic sound of the Ovation, or what the heck which guitar he used on Without You-sounds like a twelvestring, or has he dubbed something?- is an absolute earwar. And then that thin, empty, cold, emotionless rythmtrack. Aweful.

But I'm mellowing towards the sound of the Froomproductions. There's more life in it than I heard the first two days after release.

Apologies if I come across as not nice. It is not my intent. However, you keep telling me I've said things I didn't (I listened to YouTube with no sound?), and I think anyone would be frustrated by that. For instance, is the fact that I omitted the word "digital" here what is throwing you off?

"However, I was careful to say what I know of the show is from the recordings and the YouTube postings, and what I saw there did not move me. I would have loved a completely different approach. And I bet I would be saying the same thing, had I gone to a show. It's possible to enjoy the performance when you're at the venue and then not like the recording or video of it."

Because, from what I read there, it's pretty clear I didn't like the "recordings." Or is there a better way to say that? Or are you, by any chance, aware of any non-digital recordings of this particular tour? Because I would be willing to bet there are none. You tell me, though.

You seem to want everybody to agree everything Lindsey does is absolutely great. The problem is there are no absolutes in this great world. Lindsey makes bad calls. And going on tour by himself doing exactly what he had been doing all along, but without a band, was a bad call, in my opinion. And the sound suffered for it. Go Your Own Way sounds horrible, for instance, without a band. However, he could have salvaged the song if he had cared to rearrange it as a quiet solo performance. He chose not to.

Or are you going to argue with me that Lindsey has a track record of lazy setlists? That he plays the same old crap again and again. That, especially with FM, there is no variation even in the sequencing of the songs? That as a solo performer he still dedicates half the show to FM songs when all he really would need to do is two or three?

You seem to think he's infallible. And the only person I know who is that is the pope. ;)

RockawayBlind
05-03-2013, 06:30 PM
And I'll add something else about lazy setlists: When Lindsey toured for UTS, he sounded surprised when someone asked him why the set included nothing from Out of the Cradle. He blamed it on Brett, as I recall.

I know Cradle was a commercial flop, but if he means what he says about artistic integrity, there should have been a couple of songs from his solo masterpiece. He came close with SWS, but he has yet to top that album as a solo artist. So why ignore it, if art is what drives you?

So far I have been to three shows on this tour Philadelphia, NYC and Newark. Here is my seven cents.

IMO the band did not sound stale at all. Is the set list crammed with songs that have become concert staples for them?.....Yes. That said when I went to see McCartney, Aerosmith, Clapton and Petty and countless others, I wanted to hear the familiar songs. For the most part, concert attendees like/love the particular performers for these songs. Nostalgia? Possibly. But I for one do not see anything wrong with nostalgia.

But back to the Mac. I have loved this band since I first heard them in 1977. Though my attraction to Stevie outweighs my attraction to Lindsey, I still greatly admire the man and his own special powers. Granted I was up front for all three shows but each performance for me was electrifying in it's own way. And Stevie's voice has lost NONE of it's power. Is it different.... sure... but I recently touched base with an old friend of mine from the early 1980's who had a cassette recording of us just screwing around and you know what, neither of us sound like we did on that tape. Stevie sang wonderfully at each show. Sara was magnificent and it's not a go to song for me. But the way she is performing it on this tour is beautiful. And can we talk about JOHN F*****G MCVIE!!!!!!!! That bass playing was extraordinary.....pluck away John pluck away! During GYOW it was making my heart smile! Each show was packed to the rafters so they must be doing something right. And everyone there seemed to be having a blast. OK maybe that was fifty cents worth:laugh:

thanks, apology accepted.

as a way to answer some of your questions - if you read others' reactions, there are many who misunderstood what you said. so it was not as clear as you think it was. but it's all good.

you ascribed a number of opinions to me in several of your recent posts, including this last one, that i've never expressed, so i'm not really sure why you are so surprised that others assume or extrapolate from what you say too.

for example:
You seem to want everybody to agree everything Lindsey does is absolutely great.

no, far from it.

if you read any of my posts about Lindsey solo or FM setlists, you would know my very strong opinions on that.

You seem to think he's infallible.
but of course i do! definitely!:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

i never said any of those things, exactly the opposite, and if you carefully read my posts (as you ask for others to do with yours!) you would know that. instead you are putting forth these cliche "typical fan" judgements about my opinions.

if you asked Lindsey what i think of him, he'd probably tell you that it's very opposite of infallible :lol:

Eh, Elle, I really don't ask anybody to read my posts. Frankly, if I had to read them myself, I might get bored.

The difference between what you say I said and my ascribing opinions to you is that I say "you seem to..." The English language is full of nuances, and it's easy to overlook them sometimes.

Be that as it may, I respect your admiration for my favorite guitarist. It's quite possible I might change my mind about the songs on the EP. But, no matter what, those OMS recordings (!!!) will never do it for me -- they are as bad as the guitar on Without You. Shockingly bad, to be honest. Sorry.

 ha, i knew you would to try to hang your hat on those when i first read them! :xoxo:

btw i never insisted OMS digital release production is perfect sounding but i was gonna let that slide (i don't hear production nuances that you all do, in many cases, so i don't normally comment on them). but since you keep bringing it up: what i said was his interpretations of the songs were great on OMS tour, imo. and that all out acoustic tour would not be my cup of tea, just like the type of tour he chose to do is not your cup of tea.

Come and ISA absolutely worked with the backing track, imo, i loved them! GYOW was somewhat ridiculous and especially when there would not be audience interactions, a bit sad and rushed. so yeah some songs worked perfectly electrically done completely solo, others not so much. acoustically redone GYOW would be interesting. Come or ISA not so much. so again, i hope he doesn't take your advice and does old-fashioned acoustic tour that you seem to want him to do. i read a review somewhere which said something like "LB took the concept of what a man-man show is supposed to be and turned it on its head" - it was better wording but something like that.

re sound at the shows, some venues had better sound than others (no surprise considering the variety of venues he played).

I appreciated reading this. Having been to three shows, what differences could you tell each night? Was the band doing anything significantly different/was one night stronger than the others? I find it interesting to hear about people who go to several shows of the same tour, especially when some bands tends to just go through the same motions at each city (so bad that sometimes the lead singer gets the location wrong). In fact, I haven't heard real differences in Stevie's performing of Sisters of the Moon, which is disappointing since I hoped it would evolve and change over repeated playing. I know some on this board have said that her vocal teacher has made it so her performances are very consistent night by night, which notes she goes for, which ones she doesn't (Gypsy!!!). I'm curious if you picked up on any differences in her songs.

I agree regarding Stevie. I think her voice sounded great, and I'm disappointed her studio recordings (In Your Dreams and the recent EP) in my opinion don't capture how strong her voice still is. Maybe it's that the quality of songs is much diminished when comparing to her classics. I said this in another thread: but as stale as some people think Landslide is, Stevie has been singing it wonderfully. Her tone over certain lines was beautiful. It's sad that I haven't really heard that translate in her recent studio efforts.

I thought at MSG John's bass part was too loud for the beginning part of the concert, maybe as far up to Sara. That song was most noticeable, since his sound was way too heavy.

I'm interested how Fleetwood Mac's show stacks up against the other rock classic acts: the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, U2, Eric Clapton, etc. They certainly aren't disappointing anyone with a 23-song setlist.

Michele

I think the speeches get routine for those of us who go to several of the shows/watch them on YouTube, but I agree that it doesn't take anything away from the quality of his live performance. I would have to think the majority of the people in the audience (who just go to one show) wouldn't even notice or have a problem with this. Maybe I'm wrong, but judging from other concerts I've been to, I don't think its really that common for other artists to go 'off the cuff' and change up their song intros night to night, though I think the audience interaction and off the cuff remarks varied from venue to venue on the OMS tour and I enjoyed the ones that didn't seem so formal in the set speeches.

Although I am more of a fan of Lindsey's solo work, I did enjoy seeing them together Stevie's voice sounded better live than I was expecting.

Right, the song intros are the same when Lindsey is solo, but there are other conversations . . . he actually talks to the audience a bit and listens with his huge eagle ears. He can hear things 10 rows back if he wants to. He loves to make jokes or, sometimes, he just gives a suggestive facial expression that says it all. There's a definite back and forth and spontaneity that's so much fun. It's not just about those Gods on Mt. Olympus.

There was more interaction between Stevie and Lindsey at the Garden than in Philadelphia. Sisters was the best at the Garden. I feel like they just go the extra mile for NYC for some reason. The Newark show was also better than Philadelphia and Gypsy was better at this show. I can't say what they each said verbatim, but their introductions to the songs were different....the same story..... just told differently. I also liked that for the most part it was just the four of them...and not the small army they had with them on their last go round. One thing that bothers me during World Turning when Lindsey sits on the floor and you hear "on the ground...on the ground" .....but thats minor. And so what if the horn section is really played through the use of a keyboard for Tusk. I think Mr. Tuggle would look ridiculous out front with an accordion. I for one cannot get enough of John's bass playing so it could never be too loud... lol. And you are right about concert attendees.....most are not going to multiple shows so any speeches are new to them.

I think Stevie's vocals on IYD were pretty much spot on in comparison to her "live" singing. The only song that I am not crazy about on that album is Ghosts Are Gone.....sounds like a ZZtop cover.

I am a weirdo who LOVES this "remix" with Lindsey's voice in that song! Gets me SO excited, not really sure why!! I know they did another kind of remix for 2003/4 shows, but then I heard this Lindsey vocal remix in Phila for his Under The Skin Tour and it seems to have worked well, because then they used it for Unleashed in 2009 and are still going with it today. I love it!! I wonder if HE put those fragments together to make it sound the way it came out?!:blob1:

The fact that it's a pre recorded backing track. At Mohegan Sun it seemed as if he was trying to lip sync to it when he comes back from the floor to the mic. His lips were off sync. I found that quite amusing.

oh duh, thanks - got it now. although it sounded like him when i first heard it (LiB maybe?), i didn't know it really is Lindsey's voice on the recording before Abbi pointed it out. i just assumed it was pre-recorded Mick. so the fact that he's on the floor while his voice is being heard is what you all don't like? i thought there was something wrong about him sitting there while Mick's playing, that maybe you all thought he should go to the back ("to the tent") like everybody else instead.

oh i thought there was something wrong about him sitting there while Mick's playing, that maybe you all thought he should go to the back ("to the tent") like everybody else instead.

At every FM show since 1975 when World turning was performed Lindsey always stood at the side of the stage while Mick had his solo. I like the fact that he sits on the floor. The man needs a rest. What's that song that Lindsey does on this current tour where Stevie lingers over in front of the keyboards in the dark part of the stage and does this strange ballet stretching, standing in one spot dance? There I'm thinking this would be a good time for her to go to the tent and change clothes or something.

But I don't think Lindsey is trying to give the impression that he's really singing at that point. (not like that Oh Diane video from tv). He'd do that during World Turning with in his solo show too, from the side of the stage. It's like he's just mouthing the words, even when he's far away from his mic to acknowledge what's going on center stage. It reminds me of how he mouths the words to Stand Back.

If I had to guess, I'd say he used one of his Taylors, which tend to have a lot of mid, and then put it through some ill-chosen effects to emphasize the mids even more. Or maybe he plugged one of his Renaissance guitars right into the board and drowned it in effects (the Turners are very warm-sounding, so he would have had to modify the sound with studio trickery). Had he used one of his Martins and recorded it with a condenser mic to capture the full range of the sound of the guitar, it would have sounded much better.

WildHearted
05-05-2013, 08:43 PM
It sounds to me like he plugged whatever guitar he used straight into the board, rather than micing it up. That could just be because of effects applied after, though. But to me the tinniness and the almost 'clicky' sound of it reminds me of a direct signal.

And I think it's probably two guitars playing in different voicings, much like it's done live.

You reminded me that I think Lindsey's among the worst lip syncers I have ever seen. Thank heavens he always sings live in his concerts; he's just awful in the band's music videos, especially Little Lies and Seven Wonders, even Big Love. Rather funny, considering how often some singers do resort to lip syncing, and sell that their concerts are actually 'live.'

Stevie's also terrible. She's gotten better over the years but she's still awful.

It's like no one ever told them that you're supposed to actually sing when you are lip syncing. It's as if they just dramatically mouth the words, which is obviously won't appear realistic.
