A new British-produced documentary DVD on Stevie's career came out today. It isn't bad. I'd give it a solid three stars out of five. It has the look and feel of the Fleetwood Mac documentary that aired on the Biography channel a few years ago. The first hour focuses on Fleetwood Mac, pre-Bella Donna and the second hour starts from Bella Donna and stops at Trouble in Shangri-La, with brief mentions of In Your Dreams and the 2013 Mac tour.

Pros

New interviews with Keith Olsen, Ken Caillat (with three copies of his new book displayed behind him, LOL!), and Rick Vito. It's great to hear Keith talking about RAL and co-writing "HAEWAFY"; Ken describing how no one wanted be in France to record Mirage; and Rick sharing thoughts about Greatest Hits, Behind the Mask, and writing music with Stevie.
NPR's Ann Powers interview - she's extremely articulate and interprets Stevie's career decisions extremely well.
Archival material from Fritz and Buckingham Nicks era
Seeing European interviews of Stevie and Fleetwood Mac, though this may be old footage for European fans
Being able to use original studio recordings (e.g. "Crying in the Night," "Gold Dust Woman") in the DVD.

Cons

Some cheesy production values: use of bad fonts, original music written to sound like actual Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks songs, being able to see a lamp cord in one of the interviews, LOL
A few incorrect facts (e.g. Menlo-Atherton High School being in Los Angeles, Stevie having four songs on Mirage, a new solo album scheduled for 1984 release--it was delayed and changed names, but I don't think it was ever intended to be released in 1984, just a year after The Wild Heart).
Use of A LOT of previously released footage: Rosebud film, Tusk doc, Red Rocks, MTV interviews, The Dance, Classic Albums: Rumours

The DVD is on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B81NPPM/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00B81NPPM&linkCode=as2&tag=stenicinf-20) if you want to buy. Actually, she really was intending to release the follow-up to TWH within a year. I recall reading an interview at the time in which she boasted of her prolific work ethic and how she wasn't going to wait two years between solo albums again. I remember this interview so well because it made me so happy. So even though RAL was released only two years after TWH, it seemed like an eternity only because Stevie had promised it much sooner.

Thanks for the review... too bad about the cheesy production values!

I recall that interview, too, because Stevie hates being cooped up in the studio. But I think the record label's goal was to have the record done and pressed in 1984 and released by the first or second quarter of 1985, release some singles, and then put out a spring/summer tour. But all that was delayed by almost a year because of Jimmy Iovine leaving the project. So I thought it was a little careless to say in the DVD that the album was supposed to be released in 1984 when the record was in limbo at that stage.

I forgot to mention that there's a 20-minute "Recording Rumours" interview with Ken in the extra features. It's pretty much stuff that he mentions in his book.

Jazzville Skyline : “…pick-up nicks…”

Whenever I think of Stevie Nicks, the first thing that comes to mind is a quote of hers from the brilliant documentary, ‘Destiny Rules’, which showed the band, Fleetwood Mac, working on their ‘then’ new album, “Say You Will”.

The quote was said plainly and simply by Stevie herself, when talking about the music…“This is not about art…”…Now if that doesn’t send shivers down your spine, nothing will.

That having been said, there is a new 2-hour+ documentary out on the market focusing on Stevie herself, called “Through The Looking Glass”, and it takes us on her musical journey with Lindsey Buckingham, from their early band ‘Fritz’ to “BuckinhamNicks’ and eventually to ‘Fleetwood Mac’ and her solo efforts (which is the most interesting, as well as the most telling, part).

There are also many critics and fellow musicians here to discuss Stevie’s songwriting abilities (or lack thereof), as well as her vocal ability (or lack thereof).

In fact, at one point, a specific music producer actually refers to her vocal sound as to that of a ‘goat’, which, if you really listen, isn’t too far off…and it is evident that most feel that Lindsey was indeed the true creative talent of the bunch.

Nevertheless, her turbulent personal life is also addressed thoroughly, especially as to how it affected her solo career, not to mention, of course, how it played out through the ‘Mac’ ensemble.

Anyone who was around during the days of “Rumours” and the eponymous album, knows the stories, whether or not they were a Fleetwood Mac fan or not…You couldn’t help but be swallowed into the whole cacophony of ‘pop’ money-makers and ‘bombastic’ mischief-makers, that became this mega-dollar juggernaut.

Her image is what sold her…her lifestyle is what sold her out…This is Stevie Nicks…love her or not…this is the one documentary to see specifically about her.
