View Full Version : Sisters... so what do we think?

I think this totally deserves it's own thread. Now that we've got an MP3 version of Sisters Of The Moon, what are everyone's initial impressions?
When the song first started it gave me the chills, I think her older voice actually totally works for it. I was somewhat disappointed when she skipped to a lower key for the chorus, but that was very much expected. I think the song more or less sounds exactly the way it should: it's dark, spooky, and still rocks. I think it might actually be better than I thought it would be.
Now for my big disappointments: I really hoped Lindsey would share a verse like in the old days. Something about his singing a verse really drove the song home in my opinion. The only other thing I wish they'd tweak is that the song really needs a stand alone guitar solo. I think the loss of both of these elements makes the song seem a bit anticlimactic. It just seems rushed. Sharon & Lori are a bit too understated, too... I love the backing vocals I can hear, though!
Those nitpicky things aside, I totally understand how this song would be more than a bit intimidating for Stevie, however. It is the song her fans obsess over most. It's her most iconic live song of all time. It's utterly representative of her out of control cocaine use. I'm shocked Stevie agreed to ever perform it again. Which is more than likely why she's rushing through the performance. Still, I'm so glad it's in the setlist, and I hope it stays.
EDIT: here's the download link for those who didn't see it in the opening night thread- http://www.mediafire.com/?l468045hdcaept1#!

I honestly don't care if it'd been acoustic. The fact that it's back in the set is enough to make me thank the Mac gods for the rest of the summer. I think it sounds a lot better than I was honestly expecting....

I liked it overall, much better than I thought I would. I didn't care for Stevie's repetition of "Sisters" in places I had never heard before, but Great vocal and solid tune, no doubt.
I fear that this, along with some of the "other" newer songs didn't get the recognition they deserved. I was around a bunch of casuals....I could be wrong about the floor, though.
Thought about Lori and Sharon...they seemed to disappear alot during the set. I'm So Afraid and the acoustic set are the obvious songs, here.

I thought they handled the song well but it could use a guitar solo and a bit more of a dramatic ending, but overall Stevie adapted it well to her present day vocal. It truly is a gem of a song and could easily replace Rhiannon. Wouldn't it be wonderful with a slow piano beginning with Stevie singing in a soft voice?

I agree. This was the biggest disappointment about it to me. I was expecting Lindsey to cut loose and he never did. Anticlimactic is a good way to describe it.

^ This. This song has that slow build to a dramatic ending....what happened? All of a sudden it was over...disappointing. Her vocals sounded ok, but for a live concert performance, I would have wanted a more kickass finish.

I think it was pretty dull. That she has to adjust the vocal is not the main problem. I agree with the notion that the instumental arrangement lacks a powerboost in the end. Indeed, where's that spinecringin' dark wavey solo?

agree with shackin, seems pretty dull and just kind of fades out quickly, almost as if they knew they "had" to do it, but just wanted it over with (stevie?). Seems like it may be a physically hard for stevie's voice these days. Wonder if it will stay in the set?

After thinking about it, I agree with Shackin', but maybe it lacks the guitar solo/powerful ending b/c it was fading into the mello Sara?
And Spoinny, I agree but the guitar riff/solo from LB would have no stain on Stevie's vocals.
It may very well be hard on her vocals to perform (like back in 79-82) But if STEVIE wanted to rush the song.....would it be in the set in the first place?

I am thinking they felt they really needed to add it to the set list this time around, esp since they know the fans love it so much (don't they?), plus this is such an iconic live song for them, I bet if Stevie had her way, they wouldn't be doing it tho!

Aww, that's sad. But you may have a point. Stevie wants to do it, but she is probably doubting. Well, we got to hear it (at least once) I'm sure it will pop up on youtube soon.
It was a subdued performance, I will say, but I was glad that they at least tried. It was a good (newer) interpretation.

In my mind, this song is about ownership and showmanship. It takes a lot of confidence to pull off this performance. There isn't any liquid or powder courage anymore. Does Fleetwood Mac have the natural adrenaline? Can it be done? I think so. The entire band has to be into it. The song builds from it's very introduction.

Sometimes you have to find a solution. We have a 2.40 minute Not That Funny, their shortest liveversion ever. it doesn't have the eighties treatment where's It's build out into that orgastic theatre, and it lacks the brilliantly weirdo cacaphonic ending of the studioversion. But instead we get this folky arrangement with very highenergy vocalblends that end the song like a powerhouse. It's possible.

Everyone seems to be really worried about Sisters being dropped. I really don't think that's going to happen. The audience seemed to really react to it first of all. But more than anything, this is the lone 'new' song on this tour for Stevie... she really can't drop it. She brought out Beautiful Child for the Say You Will tour (and later added Sara). Unleashed brought us Storms. Sisters is this tour's unexpected mothballed oldie. Otherwise, Stevie's just relying on the old hits, which is what she's repeatedly said this tour is not about.

I really missed the smokin' guitar solo at the end. It feels like half the song is missing with the abrupt ending, just like Rhiannon. That said, it was very cool and I'm glad they did it. I think it might get better when Stevie gets more comfortable with singing it and can throw it some ad libs to make it more interesting. I missed Lindsey singing a bit of it too, but I missed the guitar solo a lot more.

I think it sounds good...nice and moody. I mean, none of us expected the exorcism of 1982 SOTM did we? I agree with others than a nice rocking guitar solo ending would have been good, but I'm sure she will add a few things as it goes along.

It's almost as if Lindsey is too afraid/respectful of Stevie to no longer rock out on guitar in her songs. Rhiannon, Sisters and Gypsy were once songs where he just went mental onstage, trying to upstage her I suppose. It worked, gave the band an edge on stage that has been missing ever since. Obviously they're still a good live band, but things just sound a tad too polished nowadays.

I like it...it's reworked a lot how I thought it would be. More subtle, but still spooky and I really liked Stevie's "aged" voice - it fits very well with the tone of the song. It does suffer from the Rhiannon syndrome...it isn't Stevie's voice that makes the song anti-climatic vs. the old days - it's the arrangement and mostly the lack of Lindsey's blistering guitar presence. It could be improved...it was weird without the guitar solos and did feel rushed at the end. I guess this goes along with it's place in the set...first half of the show vs. the show stopping finale of the encore (yes I know Songbird closed the shows afterward) that it was in 1982.
As for Lindsey not singing the one line, this isn't new - they've done it like this before. I can't remember if it's that '78 Baton Rouge version or one of the '79 versions, but Lindsey didn't always sing that "some call her sisters of the moon..."
I can see this hopefully getting even better the more comfortable the band gets with it. I do not see Stevie dropping it. Stevie's "game time decision" song will likely continue to be Silver Springs.
Edit: I had just turned 2 the last time this was played - I am pumped that they resurrected it! 'Bout time!!

I just played the MP3. (Thank you to the original provider for that.) I really loved it. I guess she's no longer dark at the top of the stairs. She's now black at the top of the stairs? I'm glad the audience showed their love afterwards. Her vocals were really good and I like her new way of singing this. Loved the witchy sounding background vocals from Lori and Sharon. The only thing this song lacks is Lindsey's loud guitar parts. I can't imagine why she would want that left out other than for people to hear her vocal more clearly.

I absolutely LOVE Sisters Of The Moon!:]:]
I have mixed feelings here. Gotta listen to this a few more times but I do agree with the comments about not having the edge and that is what is absent, the edge. Just my morning musings here.....are they able to supply the edge that Sisters Of The Moon needs? It's been a long time, three decades since they have played it live. And, face it, we're all getting older. It needs to, "grow" on me. Going back to listen. The band seems tighter, there is something there that hasn't been in years. Hmmm....wonder whats changed?

I really LOVED it! So chilling to hear that opening riff once again. Stevie voice handles the song just fine. Sure, as we expected, she's not shredding the chorus, holding it longer & singing it higher like she did on the "Tusk" & "Mirage" tours, because obviously if she did (even if she could) she'd shred her vocal chords and blow out her voice - which is exactly what she did numerous times during "Rhiannon" & SOTM live performances in the 70's through early 80's, causing show cancellations and vocal inconsistencies.
Remember this show is a not a sprint, it's a marathon. Stevie is very aware what NOT to do to keep her voice in shape, this is a pretty long show (which is probably the reason this song has been shortened) and basically a grueling North American tour schedule (at their age) through July 6th. Also, I think that based on SOTM's placement in the setlist, I believe it was probably an intentional move on the bands part to not only shorten the 2013 "live" version of this fan favorite, and not make it the barn burner-esque song of yore, hence Lindsey's less intense & subdued guitar solo & shortening the song.
I suspect between opening night jitters and being the first show, that as the tour rolls along Stevies performance's of SOTM will only get better. I don't expect this song to get dropped at all!
AND "Without You" sounds amazing - If the live version sounds this amazing, I can only imagine what the studio version sounds like. And Stevies definitely singing as high as she did on the early 70's demo! WoW
Btw. I love the "Sisters" vamping in the chorus - it's new and sounds eerie. It reminds me how she sounds & sings "Honey" on "Trouble In Shangri-la"
I can't wait to hear this live in person!!

Again I ask "Are You Karen?" or any other rep of the band? (please see my response in Columbus thread) If you don't respond, I will assume that you are a rep for the band.
Needless to say, Most of the responses here and in general (IMO) of Sisters and the New Material are positive. But, maybe I have been accustomed to the "negative reaction" to a BAND I LOVE! So, she tried this out...blah...Lindsey said this...blah blah blah.
What I'm getting at is sometimes Stevie should heed her own advice and NOT "Listen to the voices...and ignore Our own voice". People will talk regardless, whether it's good publicity or not.
I'd say 90% of the fans that POST here are fanatics and LOVE the fact that Ms. Nicks was ever so brave to tackle Sisters again. She did a Great job!
I'd be ever So Sad to NOT hear Sisters again at Jazz Fest. Please don't mislead our Ms. Nicks into not performing it again, ever. For most of us, She IS our icon and really in the long-run can do no wrong.

I give Stevie big kudos for dusting off "Sisters" after all these years, but I'm on the fence about this performance. I guess, for me, this 2013 version really lays bare how limited Stevie's vocal range has become. I realize that she's not 30 years old anymore, and I did not expect a repeat of the 1982 performance, but to me her voice on this sounds really scratchy and, as she has become accustomed to doing as of late, she's just yelling the high parts. There is very little nuance to her voice. I don't at all get a sense of the darkness or mystery that some of you are picking up on.
Again, I'm extremely glad and grateful that at 65 Stevie is still out there doing what she's doing; it just saddens me that years of abuse and constant touring have ripped away certain qualities from her voice that I used to love.
And I'll say it again: I really think her vocal coach has done more harm than good.
I'll be curious to see how long she keeps this in the set. It's a hard song to sing, and she has a lot of nights left.

Much better than I was expecting, but her extremely low note on "mooooooon" was disappointing. I didn't love the ending either - she tried to give us what we want, but it just wasn't successful, IMO.
I'm a realist. I was well aware it wouldn't come anywhere close to Tusk & Mirage tour versions. AND I really do like the "the people, they loooooove her..." verse. I do hope they keep it in the set, since it is a more obscure tune & it really is a rocker. Time will tell.

Yes, exactly - if the song were softened up a bit, more of Stevie's vocal nuances would show through. I'd really like to hear her try to sing some of these older songs more softly, like she does For What It's Worth or Landslide.

What I mean when I say that I think her vocal coach has done more harm than good is that he has trained her to sing in a very controlled, uninspired way. As a result, her vocals often lack color. She takes no chances and doesn’t explore different aspects to her voice. I believe he has convinced her that in order to not “have a bad night,” she needs to keep her vocals within a certain, monotonous range. With “Landslide,” for example, she used to sprinkle it with really soft, delicate notes that would give powerful meaning to certain lyrics and phrases in the song. Now it’s pretty much the same tone throughout. Plus, she seems to think that in order for her voice to have power, she needs to yell (listen to “Stand Back” live these days). It’s almost as if she’s following a strict vocal script and doesn’t want to stray from it, lest she be scolded by her vocal coach. I know she has some of that nuance in her still, because every once in a while it comes out (she sounds lovely on “Say Goodbye,” for example). I’m in no way suggesting that Stevie shred her voice or go crazy like she did in the ’80s, but I do wish she would explore the different sides of her voice that remain strong.
And, of course, this is just my silly opinion. I'm not a vocal coach; I just go by what I hear......
Stevie Nicks is almost 65 years of age. This is why many other female rockers have retired because of these "fan" comments. I saw the MAC in '82 when she last performed Sisters and most of the reviews had issues with her performance of the song. Enjoy what we are getting. I would have never thought in 1987 I would see Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham on the same stage.

Honestly, I don't think that she is choosing to not add those nuances with her voice. Your voice changes as you get older, I think it becomes increasingly harder to have those nuances with age. The mid range between a whisper and a soft note becomes increasingly harder to hit. I think she has issues with either something comes out that is too soft and it breaks up, which results in her needing to put more power behind it. This quickly makes softer notes a lot harder to achieve. I've noticed this with both Paul Simon and McCartney over the past decade. Their voices just don't flex the way they used to. It's either 20% or 110% full power.

I remember many years ago a particular contestant on America Idol would drink a shot of warm olive oil before performing. She insisted it allowed her vocals to stretch and bend easier when she wanted them to.

What he does for 2 hours while holding a guitar, I could not do for 20 minutes. In fact, I could hardly climb the stairs to leave the venue after the show. Certainly not. I bet he also worked his socks off in the last month to produce this show. Provided all the prerecorded bits to fit in the livemix, and rehearsed with the backingband. And then propell the whole 2 hours 15 on the night self, singing and playing his heart out. Amazing.

THIS
Lindsey really was showing his age with this song... very old man-ish. His blistering guitar work during the bridge and outtro on the Tusk and Mirage tours were a staple of the song. The guitar work on this song last night was really, really lazy and kind of ruined the song for me.
I'm only hoping that I complain about this during the first leg of the tour. They haven't played this in 30 years so we should expect some cobwebs. Maybe in a couple of months he'll figure it out and melt some faces like the old days!

Oh, I meant the coke in the past. I wasn't suggesting he used either substance today. I just meant that you'd think the past years of abuse (though it felt good to him at the time) would have taken a toll on his body that would be manifesting itself now, in his sixties, and it doesn't. Not for the hours that he's onstage.

From what I can tell I like it, I don't consider it a mistake that they dusted it off. Even if Stevie didn't abuse her voice in the past it would never sound the same as it used to, I'm okay with that. Nothing stays the same, everything changes, and it won't ruin the song's legend for me to have it toned down now.
But I agree that the arrangement could be a little punchier. Let's see if it evolves over the tour (and happens to be perfect by the time they, oh, roll around to my neck of the woods).

It you don't use your voice correctly, one day you're gonna end up with nodes on your vocal chords. That's the reason why Stevie's voice sounds the way it does nowdays. She could have a surgery to remove them, but they would probably be back soon, and at this point I don't know how much of her old voice could be restored even if she did. That being said, I don't mind her modern voice at all. Sure she can't pull out an amazing Rhiannon like she used to 30 years ago, but she still has that color that soothes my soul so fine. Give her some time, and she will make SOTM sound firmer and more convincing, and if they decide to enhance it with the old guittar solo, I'll be in heaven. I don't care about her stage clothes. All I care about is her music. She still is an absolutely gorgeous woman at almost 65.

And I have to say that I really enjoy SOTM 2013. We have the recorded version on our "Tusk"-sets and we can listen to the 1982 performance on youtube non-stop.
There is nothing wrong with the way SOTM was performed in Columbus. It's still mystical and haunting.
I also depends on the youtube version you are listening to. I would recommend you to listen to ALL the videos that are available right now. We have some snippets that are quite short and don't cover the whole song at all, but they have a better quality in sound and the overall effect is so much better. You really should give it a try.

I don't get it either. Singer's voices change as they get older. Listen to Joni Mitchell, Kate Busy, Emmylou Harris... the real high end of their voices is far less obvious now - if it's there at all. In some cases their voices are completely different. Not bad, just different. If anything I find it more interesting to hear some back catalogue material re-interpreted or changed to suit the singer's evolved voice.

I have been re-listening to it doesn't sound bad but I think more practice time would have made it even better. Do it very similar to the 1982 live version, have lindsey do the part he does in the song and when he is finished lights go down and on the screen show the part of Stevie doing that dance she does in the 1982 concert clip and they come right back into the song like she did.I can't expect her to do her witchy dance moves which we all love with her mallet and cowbell. It would be cool she came out with her lacy black shawl over head like she used to do would be great to get her into the mood she seemed rushed to perform it too.I think she still and will make it great in upcoming shows.I do hope to get a ticket at mohegan sun I am going to treat myself its my birthday and going to the show no matter what,I have to its in my blood.they will be coming here in CT 10 days after my birthday so I am going no quiestion.

I really love the low-growled "Sistaaaaaaaaaaahs..." that she repeats throughout the song. It's spooky.
But yeah, she needs to hit at least one or two high "moon"'s, I think, for the song to work. And the tempo needs to be faster. Both of those problems seem easily fixable.

It is amazing that she brought this song back into the setlist!
Here's a "Sisters" fact: The first time Stevie ever performed Sisters of the Moon was at Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, NY July 1977. (Before it even came out on Tusk!) I was at that show front row and it was during that song, at that very moment, that I became a die hard Stevie Nicks fan.
Before the concert Stevie bought her first top hat at an antique shop in Buffalo (according to Stevie), she put the top hat that day during the show and the magic was all around her.

I loved this 2013 live version. She seems to be singing this with more conviction somehow while trying to conserve her voice. She has said in past interviews that in the early live performances of this song she ripped her vocal cords so she's being more careful these days.

I didn't think Stevie's vocal was that bad; it was about what I expected for her at this age and her current vocal range. What was disappointing to me was the guitar part and we need Linds singing part of the song like he did on the Mirage tour--also crank up the girls a bit in the background.
But I am totally down with the people who are pointing out that age in general does things to your voice--the other day I was listening to Emmylou Harris and happened to listen to a 70's song back-to-back with a new one from her latest duo album with Rodney Crowell--her high end is just not there anymore even though she still has a great voice--it's not the voice she had in her 20's/30's anymore. So imagine combining age with a prior history of vocal abuse and it's amazing Stevie can still sing at all.

Hate to be pernickity, isn't it an A4 that's the highest note in Sisters? It's the same high note she goes for in Rhiannon/Dreams, and Gold Dust Woman? these days. But yeah, surely she could give a good high wail at the last "moon".

I agree, if they performed it with his guitar solo and then break it back down to the light/creepy guitar with the drums and then build back up with vocals - it would have been much better. However, I do think it's good and I doubt the main structure of the song will change on this tour. Hopefully she adds some vocal Stevie-isms and immerses herself in the song a little more.

Based on the youtube contributions I thought it was great. Very different than what we're used to but she's not 30 anymore and I think opening night jitters played a big part. Lindsey should sing the "some call her sister of the moon" part and they should add the guitar solo, other than that I thought it was pretty good. I agree with everything you posted...except the "sistaaaaa" repetitions. It was new and different for me, so in time, I guess the re-interpretation could grow on me. I loved that Stevie was Brave to perform it (and hope she continues to do so).
The mystical, dark, dreary song is one of the best she has ever recorded. And I enjoyed the fact that I was surrounded by Casuals that either didn't know the song or were aghast with the performance, like they had just bought a one-way ticket to an exercisism. I Love It!
This IS our Stevie, a song that defies popular opinion and vote. The world would be a better place with all exposed to this "dark" side of Stevie and FM.

I listened to it yesterday and thought, 'Well, that was a good effort.' I didn't hate it, and I thought the vocals were pretty good.
Today I listened to the whole show 'back to front' (as Stevie likes to say) while I was doing housecleaning. Right in the middle of 'Sisters,' I realized I was singing, dancing and spinning around. It totally crept up on me, but man this song still works live!
I would only add to the chorus of those wishing for a longer guitar outro. It does seem to end just as I'm really getting into it.

I listened to it twice now. The first on Utube and the second is the bit torrent show. You can really hear everything on the download and after the second listen, I thought it was really good. I would like the Lindsey vocal and some wailing guitar, but I think the show as a whole was more subdued than past tours. I am seeing them in Pittsburgh and can't wait to see how they will sound after a few more shows under their belt.

But I find his version very adorable and I really like it.
I have to say - I'm surprised about myself... I do love the studio version and the live version from 1982 so much, but yet i totally dig SOTM 2013 and also the Walter Egan-version.
It's obviously not that easy to mess up a perfect song. ;)

I had no idea Walter ever performed the song, thanks for the heads up! Here's a version... obviously to me it just sounds totally wrong hearing anyone other than Fleetwood Mac perform Sisters.

I find this interesting because most of the time we get to hear a cover of the final product, but in this case we have both Fleetwood Mac's and Walter Egan's approach to the same demo.

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm just dying to hear if the song evolves any tonight, and throughout the rest of the tour for that matter. I'm still really amazed at how good Stevie's vocals were on the song, and how well the song works after all these years. It definitely needs some tweaking, but the issues it has are pretty piddley, in my opinion.

^My only "gripe" is that it seemed to be lacking that eerie vibe that they had on the '82 tour. Also I think the song should've been another 2 minutes long... you know, stretch it out like they have been doing with Gold Dust Woman... give it more oompf by having a real long intro and outro. ;)

I'm very glad they didn't do a piano intro to Sisters. It was rock and roll the whole time. Wish there was more drama to it, but glad they are doing it at all. On Not That Funny, it ended too soon. I much preferred the 82 version. All the "yeah yeah's" just were not the same as Lindsey and his 82 theatrics of the song. I just wish they would do more songs from their catalogue because other than Sisters, Not That Funny, Without You and Sad Angel, the rest have all been done before numerous times. I guess it is a greatest hits tour again. Am disappointed by that, but can't miss out, have to go.

Totally agree. Like on Rhiannon from days of old when they played a little while and then Stevie starts screaming. Gives more drama.

I agree, Louie, and I definitely think it will get better as the tour progresses. Stevie's mature voice sounded really fantastic on it -- they just need to build on the song's atmosphere and inherent eeriness (like Brandon said).

Stevie's voice mature voice sounds great on it as I suspected. Actually I'm kinda diggin that they are playing it pretty close to the actual Tusk studio recording (w/ minor vocal modifications) than the 8 minute blistering "Tusk" & "Mirage" tour versions which would be completley unrealistic & unachievable energy and vocal-wise.
"Sisters" is probably more strange & wierd in 2013 than ever before for the casual Fleetwood Mac concert going fan, and I love it & hope it freaks peeps out...in a good way:laugh:
Stevie hasn't written & recorded a song so eerie and freaky, well, since Sisterzzzzzzzzzzz

I'm disappointed in what I'm seeing. I know Stevie is getting older, but if there's no passion in it, then don't do it. If she's just going to stand there, then get her a stool and sing acoustic versions of That's Alright, Crystal or anything else. The dancing pony in the UK Everywhere video shows more enthusiasm! BTW, I adore Stevie. I just hate to see her epicness reduced to this.

After 90 seconds I clicked it away. I think it's too much of a rebuilt to get through. I can't stand the around flying "sisters", and Mick just doesn't drive it the way he has to. No, I agree with you. Her vocal was better the first night. Her Philly vocal was very shouty-shrieky, which is exactly what I feared Stevie would do with the song when I heard it was returning to the setlist. Aside from the poorer quality vocal, everything else was the same in Philly.

i watched the Philly video and however great that recording is it doesn't do it complete justice. i can tell you after being at both Columbus and Philly show that you are completely wrong!
song was VERY different in those 2 cities. i will mention just one thing - Lindsey's screaming guitar part was back in Philly!!:blob2:  not completely as it was in 1982 but very much there, unlike in Columbus where he looked like he's just doing the work he has to, bored, during SOTM. it was great to see that guitar part back and i hope it just gets better and more pronounced from here on!

Yes to all of this. "Sisters of the Moon" is, and has been for a very long time, my all-time favorite live song because of the Mirage video--not "Rhiannon," not "Sara," but "Sisters." Because of this, I was dreading it in Philadelphia. Is it the same as Mirage? Of course not; however, there was great energy to the song, Stevie sounded good~(I leaned over to my own sister :) and said, "Bless her heart; she is really trying," and I appreciated the effort), and Lindsey sounded great on the guitar part. I was NOT expecting to be converted, and I was pleasantly surprised. I have to echo what many have said~the videos are wonderful; I LOVE them! But they are NOT at all representational of the live show.

I honestly wish they would rework the set list to put SOTM towards the end as one of the encores. I think it would serve better purpose there, and I think even though Stevie would be tired by the end of the show she would put a bit more energy into it.
It's already being discussed as a toss-up here on the board that Silver Springs will get dropped. I think she should put her "sequencing" hat on and try again.
I bet it's kinda weird hearing SOTM so early in the set.
Regardless, I think we should try to be a bit more optimistic with the song being in the set, and be a little more forgiving in respect to age and current vocal chords, and to give it more time considering that the first few shows of every tour they do is a little shaky but gets better as they go along.
It's a long year of touring ahead, so it'll be interesting to see how this song grows and develops.
I'm more disappointed that she's not really getting into Rhiannon or GDW so far in this tour like the Unleashed tour. It seems more aloof this time around so far.
But who really knows - although the Mac is sometimes predictable in many things, they sometimes throw a little bit of unpredictability into it as well.
I'm just happy to see new videos of them singing either way.

I definitely would have to disagree..I noticed many more "Stevie-isms" in the 2nd show. She seemed to be feeling it more, just based off of the videos.
No one should be disappointed about Stevie "not getting into" any of her songs anymore. Forget about the diminished vocal range, she simply lacks the enthusiasm, energy, passion and intensity of yesteryear. These days, it's all about ego and her bank balance. She is now foremost a businesswoman, not a trilling hippie. Get used to it.

2 things I noticed after watching the Philly sister on you tube...I think it should not fall in the set right after tusk. Lindsey looks exhausted during the segue! Also the ending was great and I love after she says they haven't done it since the end of the 70s the crowd erupts and she laughs and says "Cool!" It's weird that the big finale for Stevie that she gets really energized on has never been the high energy portion of the song. The only thing missing is would you be my sister... Well you say noon baby noo. I don't need the toungues. Just some noooo baby noooo

I agree, bring out the "no baby noooooo" and instead of tongues, she could incorporate a modest "Edge of 17" style growl to finish it off.

My thoughts from the MSG thread: I was eagerly awaiting Sisters of the Moon, like everyone else, and I made sure not to listen to Stevie's 2013 take beforehand to avoid being spoiled. I have to say I was very impressed with her vocals and how she really went for the crazed speaking in tongues as much as she could at the end. It is the wildest I have ever seen Stevie get since she's had her long hair. It actually became quite a mess, and I LOVED that she went there, to that place at this point in her career. I do, however, think the song can be improved:
1 - Drop the sustained "Sisters" over the full band chorus segments. For me, this was a choice that speaks to the feel of Stevie's most recent work, and it made the song sound like a cut from In Your Dreams. Not that that's a bad thing, but I would have preferred the song without those excess flourishes and with the cowbell break to give her voice a rest.
2 - The song needs to have more drive, it felt too slow. It also needed the longer intro to build the atmosphere and mystique that made the song a Stevie signature and a staple in the 78-82 set list.
3 - I'd love Lindsey to sing the third verse. His voice, like in Gypsy, would add more to the song. Also, he needs a stronger, maybe harsher guitar sound, as the full band choruses weren't as intense or distorted as the sound in earlier live performances. That could help the song rock more than it does now, if they are going for that feel.
4 - The ending: The guitar part/Lindsey's improv was too loud for Stevie's final verse, drowning out some of her singing. That could be there intentionally if she's worried about her voice and straining. I'd have preferred that the song finished with the guitar solo rather than abruptly with a sustained "Sisters of the Moon" line.
5 - Of course, maybe these are Stevie's preferences and I should just be grateful I saw her perform it. I just think there is greater potential that IS achievable, and that most importantly the vocal umph is there.

Probably my favorite part of the song is at the end of the bridge when she sings "does anyone, ooo know her name" and then Lindsey hits that high note and goes into a solo. But that doesn't happen on this current version (the Lindsey part). There's not even a solo there.

Love it! always one of my favorite songs. I love all her creepy atmospheric songs. too bad I am deployed in afghanistan till August. I like the random "sisters" chorous. I'd rather Lindsey not sing that verse. I just wish it was about 2 minutes longer for a better intro/ guitar solo at the end. She does a good job vocally in my opinion.

i'm really not sure where are you getting this from. i haven't seen any UL shows so i can just go from youtube and what everybody has been saying here for the last 4 years - and that was that UL was mediocre. mostly b/c SN was going through the motions at majority of shows and looked like she didn't want to be there.
the 3 shows i've seen on this tour were amazing shows, very very far from mediocre. and unlike during Unleashed they all seem to be happy to be there, interactions are nice and loving.
i personally may not be very happy with the setlist, mainly because 2 of the big wishes i had are not there and some of the songs i really didn't want to hear are there. but the setlist works, flows well, and the stage, the performances, and the setup are according to everybody light years better than for UL.

I don't think the Unleashed tour was mediocre at all. I feel that the 2013 Columbus show was better than Unleashed, but it's probably because I like the current setlist more and enjoyed the enthusiasm that SN and LB displayed when I saw them. However, I found nothing bland about Unleashed, despite the way Stevie has recently categorized it. And although we've had 3 years to parse it now, when Unleashed started, the fan reviews were not negative either. Not at the time.

I thought the SYW show I saw was pretty godawful. Stevie only seemed to come alive on Stand Back and Mick's electronic drum solo was just painful.

I watched the Sisters from the Columbus show but decided to leave it be for a while and wait for Stevie to find her groove. Just found videos from the most recent show and I gotta say, my dear old Stevie is definitely finding where she wants to take this song and no longer looks or sounds uncomfortable singing it! Just goes to show, Stevie, pull some sh*t out of the time machine and blow the dust off, you can still rock the older tunes even if the pitch is lowered! It sounds 70% better than the first night, and for a song she hasn't performed since the early 80s and her voice the way it is now, that is a MAJOR accomplishment.

But now after hearing it, I don't think I'll miss it. Found it kinda boring. Which makes me kinda sad. :distress:
But we're going Tuesday to see IYD's Doc so I'm happy about that.
We saw FM in 2009, Stevie and Rod in 2011 and Stevie in September 2012. So we had already made the "laughable, informed decision" to skip this tour long before I saw any "crappy-sounding, blurry videos on YouTube" that might've swayed my decision.

The Moody Blues were my first concert...as a freshman in high school back in 1999. I've seen them 2 other times since then and I would go see them again if I had the opportunity. They put on a fun show. They do play all the standards like FM.....basically their whole second half is set...but over the course of a decade the other songs have changed quite a bit. Especially since Ray quit (though I do miss his presence). And I haven't seen a lot of the songs they've playing now. I'm hoping to get another one in before they call it a day.

So everyone is having fun ribbing Stevie for saying that the song hasn't been performed since the seventies, when in fact it was done on the Mirage tour. I just got the new May 23 issue of Rolling Stone in the mail, and there is an interview with Lindsey discussing how some songs were picked for the set list. Talking about SOTM, he says "I don't remember if we've ever done this song onstage before. Stevie wanted us to try it, and it really works." So she's not the only one with memory problems. :D

That's the problem. It seems the 2013 live version of Sisters of the Moon is inspired more by the studio version than by their older live performances. Now I don't know if Lindsey intentionally says this to pretend like he doesn't know it is considered one of Stevie's most iconic stage performances, but for God's sake will someone who has an upcoming meet and greet with Mick tell him to watch the Mirage Concert video. There is a reason why the fans were calling for this song: it should really rock and have some life to it.

fried brains all around. ;)
in 2003 Say Goodbye was written in 1987 or so. in 2013 Say Goodbye was written in 2003.
LB never heard of a song of his titled Twist of Fate, there's just Right Place To Fade... even though Twist of Fate came out under that name at one point.
Big Love was "written in......????? 1987? i think."
the list goes on... what he really doesn't remember and what he just pretends he doesn't remember is a bit hard to sort out.

Yet, he totally remembers doing IDWTK live and how much fun it was.

Did anyone really expect this version to be the same??? I understand that this one one of her most iconic performances, but let's be real.. she can't do it the way she used to!! I figured it would be a bit more upbeat, but nothing like the Mirage tour

I don't think I said I expected the performance would or should be the same. But if they can't remember how they used to rock the song, that's pretty sad. And Stevie is bringing it as much as she can with the vocals(!!), which really impressed me at Madison Square Garden; it's the arrangement that's lacking.
first off, am glad they've brought it back. but, i was expecting a little something more. i didn't expect the speaking in tongues or wailing guitar solos but, i mean, this used to be such a show stopper. they needed to pay homage to that. the extended intro. stevie creeping in with the head veil. the extended guitar solos and ending. too much time off for this song. way overdue.
that msg performance was killer. stevie still can rock out. she was letting loose at that show. so, it's not her vocals that are limiting her, it's her own self. she needs to treat every show like it's nyc. at least she didn't break out the tamborine #not necessary.
