View Full Version : Who Dumped Stevie?

I just finished viewing the "In Your Dreams" documentary. In the segment that introduces the writing of the song "Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream)", Stevie talks about the song's tie in with the movie "Twilight" (No surprise, we've heard that 100 times).
HOWEVER, in this segment she also discusses that she was LEFT BY ONE OF THE GREAT LOVES OF HER LIFE. Basically, it appears as though she was rejected by him. Am I missing something? I don't recall ever hearing this story? WHO WAS THIS MAN? WHAT YEAR WAS SHE DUMPED? What time frame are we talking about?
I had always assumed that it was STEVIE who had walked away from most of her relationships for the sake of her art. Nonetheless, it looks like someone broke Stevie's heart. WHO WAS IT ?

I think several people have. As far as great loves - the one that comes to mind would be Joe Walsh. He left her, I think, eventually.
But Moonlight is supposedly about Lindsey so it's a bit confusing, really.

Exactly who I was thinking...and to take it even deeper...I do believe that Stand Back was written about this rejection. (view SB on Solid Gold). Maybe I have the wrong person or the chronilogical order backwards. But I do believe that SB was Not exactly inspired by Kim and her wedding.
So, how was the viewing WatchChain?

Stand Back would have been written before the Joe Walsh thing really got going, though, I believe.

didn't her relationship with Joe begin on the Wild Heart tour, (which of course came after the song was recorded for the album) and didn't he kind of consider the relationship over after the tour (certainly the monogamy part) and she did not?
I think more than one guy ended it with her vs the other way around. She's said a number of men in her life just couldn't take how dedicated to her career she was and wanted her to slow down and be with them more, and when she couldn't, they left because they couldn't live that way (coming second or third or wherever in her life).

I think SB is about Lindsey and Don Henley because they both refused to come to the wedding.

Didn't Jimmy Iovine walk out on her during the recording of rock a little...both as her boyfriend and producer when the drugs got to much?

This is a quote from an interview Stevie did in 1998 - apparently she herself doesn't quite remember what Stand Back was actually about:
"I can't even really tell you what Stand Back is about. Stand Back's kinda about more than one thing. There was a lot going on when Stand Back was written so it kinda pulled together all the things that were happening so it wasn't about one thing. It was written very quickly and I really did hum along to Little Red Corvette. ...and of course, now you can go home and do it too. If you search you will be able to find it."

In one interview she revealed that the original title of Stand Back was "Stranded"--
Stranded, stranded
In the middle of my room
I did not hear from you
That sounds originally more like someone leaving her (stranded) than what the song seems to say when the words get switched to stand back which sounds more like pushing someone away

From what I can gather, Jimmy and Stevie hooked-up soon after she hired him to produce "Bella Donna", at one point she was even kinda living in his home (around the time John Lennon was murdered). I suspect their romantic relationship was open and on & off until 1982 when recording for "The Wild Heart" began, and likely ending around when FM's "Mirage" Tour began. Also remember that Robin died while Stevie was tour with FM in the fall of 82' throwing Stevie into a tailspin and straight into Kim's arms, marrying him in early 83' while finishing up the "Wild Heart" sessions. Then of course we know what came next - Joe Walsh & a quickie divorce.:distress:
So by the time RAL sessions were underway, Jimmy & Stevies relationship was most likely strictly business. He walked out due to several reasons, paramount was her accelerating drug use and overall unpleasent demeanor by all accounts. I believe they also had many disagreements & arguments about the direction of RAL. The final straw, according to one of Stevie's stories, was when Dave Stewart intended the song "Don't Come Around Here No More" for Stevie, and she was taking longer than usual to try and finish the song (the verses.) So when she found out that Tom Petty not only finished it, but recorded it with the Heartbreakers and Jimmy & Dave. She said she walked into the studio and threw a fit, and fired them all!:shrug:

Can't be Joe. In that melodramatic really sad Timespace interview with Nicky Horne, Stevie says it was her who left Joe. Because their relationship "wasn't going anywhere" and "he couldn't be serious for just a minute". But she goes on for a very long time about how much she did love him when they were together and she says the cutest things about buying him legwarmers and silk shirts and yelling at people for his soundchecks and how in tune she was with him. She sounds like a little girl in love. And the interviewer asks her if it was just lust. And she takes a breath and says "It was definitely love. Not lust."
Mick did leave her though, didn't he? I thought he left her when he got involved with Sara and she was horribly devastated (according to Danny Goldberg's book). I'm also pretty sure the majority of her married boyfriends (Rupert, Derek, etc) all seemed to break her heart when they went back to their wives. And Dallas Taylor apparently told her he didn't want to continue their relationship past their on-the-road-affair. Pretty sure Jimmy left her too once the drugs and her attitude got taken too far. Any of those guys could've been the one who broke her heart or left her.

But Stand Back doesn't sound like the man dumped her per se. More like he refused to chase her. He asked her for her love, that was all. It's more like, "I don't want the rock star Stevie that all the men are falling for. I'm not going to swoon or beg. I don't want to stand in line for your attention. I want to be your priority. When he couldn't have that, then he stopped calling. So, to me it's a song of regret. Not that he dumped her, but that she let him go. And she's asking for another chance, saying that she can change, like a willow she can bend, wishing she had been more accommodating back then, because she's feeling the pain now, after the fact.
I guess I get from it a message that's not dissimilar to Rose Garden.

Yeah, but hasn't she also said that he left her because they were both so messed up on drugs that if he didn't they were going to die? And then there's that one story about how he came into the studio and was being really rude and then told her he was going off somewhere without her (I can't exactly recall).

He was packing to go on an Australian tour.

the fact is that Joe treated her like crap after the WH tour, so even though she might have been the one to officially, formally "end" things, he ended it in his own way long before she did that. He ignored her and disrespected her for a long time. It's kind of sad to think of her still hooking up with him for a long time after the tour thinking they were in a "relationship" and for him it was just another booty call. I can only think it was all the drugs messing up her head, because Stevie really doesn't seem like the doormat type who would tolerate a man who just disappears from her life for long stretches, treats her like sh*t when he *is* around.... but, I suppose we all do crazy things for love, even if it is mostly one-sided.

And, for example, the long way to go to say goodbye story isn't really about her dumping him, so much as about her walking out after being used one last time.

I remember Stevie saying that Prince "walked out of her life" after he came to help her with a small piece of track on "Stand Back". LOL! But yeah Jimmy Iovine did walk out of everything with Stevie because he was done with the whole drug thing. Just like what Stevie said, "it wasn't fun for him anymore." She has been with a lot of men. LOL! Finding out who dumped her, is a tough one. Hell, Lindsey probably dumped her. She or him have never really said what tore their relationship apart. But she did mess around with Don Henley in 1975 after the Mac's white album came out. "Rumours" may have been about all the heartache, but I think they were breaking up before that time too. We will never really know the WHOLE story on it all. But it sure made up for some great music and songwriting. :xoxo:

Stevie has said she and Lindsey were breaking up when they joined FMac, but that it was just too much at once to break up and join the band, so they stayed together. She said the fact they were making more money and she got a new nice apartment and could go clothes shopping and all the excitement of a new band, new album etc put them in a better mood and things were better for a little while. But then after a year, when the novelty of it all wore off, they realized they still had the same problems as before.
I recently discovered a Newsweek article in all my old archived stuff that was dated May 10, 1976 that says Buckingham and Nicks just ended their 6 year relationship 2 weeks ago while still recording the follow up album to the white album (it wasn't named Rumours yet).
So clearly from Jan 1975 until roughly April 1976 they were still together but rocky and faltering. On Oprah's Master Class they show a clip of her saying that as things got rocky with her and Lindsey, she did "look elsewhere". I wish they'd shown the full context of that clip. because I wonder if she said anything about Don.

So weird to me that she'd throw that out there now after denying vehemently that she would ever cheat on Lindsey so many times in the media. Remember that Rumours era interview where she b*tches about the '"packin' up, shackin' up" line, then says something to the effect of "Now people are going to think I cheated on him and I never ever did."
I wish we had the full context of the "looked elswhere" thing too. Wonder if she just means that she left Lindsey and then dated many other men after that, or if she literally means she was fooling around when she was still with him.
I know she said before that she hooked up with Don 2 months after the break up with Lindsey, so that pretty much shows she didn't "look elsewhere" with Don. Do we know what the fling was with Jim Record in 76? That could be who...

I would bet that a lot of the fuss happened during their undefined sort-of-together-sort-of-not-together phase.

well she broke up with LB quite early in 76; did she have an involvement with Jim Recor in 76? She had a fling with Walter Egan in 76. As for Don, I seem to recall the story of Don sending her a box filled with gifts, including a little record player and records he'd picked out for her, arriving when FM was doing some recording in... Florida at Criteria, which was early 76 before going to Sausalito.. Don had the whole box of stuff delivered and whoever was delivering it brought it all into the (infamous) breakfast room and she was dying because it was in front of Lindsey and all the rest of the band....
Which also reminds me of the story of Mick and John playing a prank on Stevie by having flowers delivered to her with a supposed note from Don saying "The best of my love, tonight... Don" and her being flabbergasted at his nerve and Mick and John cracking up at her reaction before telling her the truth..

Yes, after the White album broke out, they had their separate places. They weren't living together and he just slept over sometimes and I'm sure they fought all of the time in general, but definitely a lot during that in-between period.
