Just saw "In Your Dreams" tonight (and loved it, of course).

Do we have any idea what song Stevie "stole" from Tom and recorded with FM, only to have Tom demand it back? I know it ended up being Tom's song "Runaway Trains," but this is the first time I've heard this story.

Any idea if this is a song that we've had in demo form? I'm listening to Runaway Trains now, and while I think it has a bit of a "Joan of Arc" feel to it, production wise, it doesn't sound like anything we've already heard (or, at least, that I have heard).

Hive mind, any ideas?

This was an interesting part of tonight's premiere for me because she was so honest about Tom's angry reaction to her new song she had just recorded with FM.

This is a great mystery. I think the time frame is right. Most likely FM recorded this song for Tango, since TP & The Heartbreakers "Runaway Train" was also released Spring 87' from the record "Let Me Up (I've Had Enough)". You're right, the opening of RT does have a "Joan Of Arc" vibe, but as the song evolves it has a much different chord progession & sounds completely different to my ears. She probably "stole" these 11-12 Mike Campbell tracks during her RAL haze :o:laugh:

Sorry - I hope nobody minds me bumping an old thread. I thought it beats creating a new one on the same subject!

Was watching IYD documentary tonight and decided to see if I could solve the case of Stevie's "stolen" Tom Petty song - don't know if this has been done already or not, but here goes.

To my ears, it sounds like the song in question is:

The Dealer!

Decide for yourself-

Cheers, hope that's the one.

I think you are right and I agree that they sound very similar.

I prefer Stevie's The Dealer a LOT better than Runaway Train! It would have been really interesting and fun if they could figure out a way for FM to do a "cover" of Runaway train but do Stevie's "version" (that is record the Dealer) of it and put it on their new record.....

I don't think "The Dealer" is the track that Stevie stole from Tom. She recorded it with Fleetwood Mac but later tried to rerecord it for "Bella Donna". There are a million outtakes that exist of it.

I too would be interested to find out if the Fleetwood Mac version of "Runaway Train" (whatever the title may be) still exists or if Stevie just erased it in shame. Hahahaha!

I definitely don't think it's The Dealer either. She not only re-recorded that song for multiple albums, she recorded a version with Tom Petty. He would have never recorded it with her if it was really his song and was angry at her. The Dealer was tried for Tusk, Bella Donna and Rock A Little that we know of.

The Heartbreakers are supporting her on that audio. That's obviously Lynch on drums, Campbell on guitar, etc.
