I'm sorry if this isn't an appropiate topic to dicuss on here. I'll delete if it isn't.

Anyway, I've heard rumors about her being pregnant and having an abortion. Is there any proof to disclaim or prove these rumors?

Yes, there's definitely proof - if you consider her word the proof. The was an audio interview out there from 94-ish where she talks about it. There's also a few other print interviews where she talks about the "abortions" candidly.

She admitted that she was pregnant with Don Henley's baby, but had an abortion. She only talked about this after Don divulged it in an interview.

There are some claims that she's had more than that one abortion, although nothing has really been confirmed/substantiated, and likely never will.

Excerpt from VOX Magazine article/interview

But now there is remorse at the havoc her abortions have wreaked on her psyche.

"To give up four babies is to give up a lot that would be here now. So that bothers me, a lot, and really breaks my heart. But they're gone, so..." She composes herself. "But I couldn't have because I was too busy. And I had all these commitments." She wants to adopt, but age and single-parenthood are against her. "I've also though about having one myself but I'm booked up for the next four years. I don't know if, at my age, I can get pregnant right away, do an album at the same time, have a baby, promote an album, go out on tour with the baby. So I'm going back and forth in my mind. At 43 years old, my time clock is ticking, so I can't afford to wait around for very long." Surely these are the same excuses she made on the last four occasions -- with two important differences. There is no obvious candidate for the father, and even if there were, the decision totally remains in her hands.

You can't control the matter by "leaving it alone." Is it private? Sure - Stevie's abortion(s) should be private, but it's not seeing as how Stevie's given interviews on the subject. Is it tasteful to discuss? Personally I don't think so. But, it is information that's already out there. Stevie put it out there.

So, as far as I am concerned it is open to discussion provided that the topic doesn't veer into attacking others or airing personal views about the morality (or immorality) of abortion.

she hasn't "given" interviews on the subject. To my knowledge , she was asked about it in a far-reaching discussion, in the depths of the klonopin era. furthermore, it only became public from Don Henley's big mouth. don't put it on Stevie for revealing it.

It presents a distinct lack of dignity for all concerned to be raking over this most personal of Stevie's circumstances. As I stated earlier, I'm aware of her previous comments (albeit mentioned during an unquestionably addled phase), but some decorum should be exercised within this forum. I think she would be appalled to learn of such a discussion.

I don't want to have a semantic argument about what constitutes a valid interview and what doesn't. Clearly Stevie has discussed the topic (however vague) as per the information in post #5. If Stevie didn't put it out there herself, then fine, I take that back and commend her... but it's still out there.

The first time she really discussed this was in her 1994 Off The Record promoting Street Angel. This is the same interview where she says why she doesn't like the Street Angel album. At some point the conversation turns to Don Henley and she says how he spilled the beams about the whole abortion thing and how she would have never discussed this otherwise, but since Don spoke about it she felt the need to explain her side.
However long prior to this it was more or less well known that "Sara" was written in part about the unborn child.

Yes him, but the reason why I said him, was because she didn't get to be involved in his childhood as she would have liked to, since her marriage to Kim didn't work out

I'm not so sure about that. Stevie has said over & over that she shares her experiences with the world in hopes of teaching people & helping them get through the hard experiences life tosses at us. I have to think since she's opened up about this subject, that she wanted people to know how the experience informed her life. Especially given Stevie's recent comments on how women's rights are slipping, I'm guessing she's more than ok with people debating this matter.

The thing is this subject isn't up for debate. It's a fact from Stevie's past. It's not as if people are speculating what's going on, she has come right out and said what went down. Again though this is hardly a new subject, way back in the 80's she was saying that she never could have had kids because there was no time. She had said (somewhat cryptically) that if she had wanted kids she would have had to have done so when she was in her 20's or 30's and that was around the time of Tusk and Bella Donna but there was no time for that. She said that if she had gotten pregnant it would have caused Fleetwood Mac to have stop for her and she wasn't going to do that.
I don't know why people get so touchy about this topic. Regardless if you agree with her decision or not, it's part of her life and it's not for anyone of us to condone or condemn her. If you're stating facts then there shouldn't be any topic off limits.

Also I think the topic doesn't automatically have to have the detrimental connotation that seems to be coming with it, but rather it could very well be an inspiration to someone else struggling with the same sort of life decisions. I mean, I'm not a woman so perhaps I'm wrong about that...

Good point. The person asked if it's true. He didn't ask our opinions on her decisions. Those who think it's something that shouldn't be discussed - I understand your point. Therefore, YOU don't need to discuss it and shouldn't read this thread or others related. If you do think it should be discussed, continue. The end!

I believe Stevie confirmed 1 terminated pregnancy, with the Don Henley incident.

The other quote, while implying there were other pregnancies, does NOT prove that she electively terminated those pregnancies. Let's face it, The Lady was pretty messed up on a variety of substances for many years; she very likely could have miscarried. Sh*t, she could have thought she was pregnant & gotten excited, then got her period & mourned the "loss" or the idea of a child. She wasn't exactly in her right mind at the point of that interview & she's never been all that literal.

Just sayin'.

All I have to say is that what happened, happened. No harm, no foul. It's not like we're "forbidden" from discussing the drug addictions or affairs that Stevie has had in the past, so why is this one off limits? I'd also like the point out that if I was a rockstar addicted to cocaine and found out I was knocked up by my rockstar boyfriend and I was on tour and didn't know if he'd stick around and didn't want to ruin my career or my band, hell yes I would have an abortion. Withdraw from any drug is hell on an unborn child, and continuing to use cocaine can make your uterus erupt which in turn kills you and your baby. (I learned about pregnancies while on drugs while I was in rehab. It's crazy.) I understand why Stevie did what she did and i'm sure that a sober, stable Stevie could make a good mother. But 70s rockstar drugged out Stevie would not have...

Check out youtube. The interview was a 1994 Off The Record with Mary Turner. Promoting Street Angel. She mentions how Don "let the cat out of the bag on the fact that I had an abortion". And that he apologized thousands of times.
She also says she "gave up 4 babies" in a klonopin'd out 1992 Vox interview. (Here's the whole thing (http://bla.fleetwoodmac.net/index.php?page=index_v2&id=1181&c=11))

The part where the abortions are specifically mentioned is right here:

Was there a common thread among her men? "They're all very smart and very loving, and they all had a difficult time with my life and the way that I live it and how busy I am." For four lovers, a crucial test came when she became pregnant and opted for terminations. "It's always been a tragedy. But they understood." But they didn't really. "Eventually their hearts couldn't take it, they couldn't understand quite enough, how deeply embedded in this I was. And so it eventually hurt them too much and they had to leave, or face devastation on their own."

She put her relationship with her fans before a relationship with one man. Ever since she saw Janis Joplin perform, Stevie has wanted to emulate her, to achieve that state of communion with the crowd. "I just wanted to be in love with my audience and I wanted them to be in love with me back."

I find it interesting that Stevie herself never mentions abortion or miscarriage in the Vox interview - only the interviewer says it; she just responds (and we all know that if it's printed by a jounalist then it MUST be true, right?!?!)

I'm not saying she hasn't, I'm just saying that I still have my doubts.

The Vox interview has always seemed shady to me. I can't believe Stevie would say something along the lines of: you name 'em, I've slept with 'em. That's so not her style.

I'm not saying I don't think she's had plenty of abortions. I'm not trying to argue that. I'm just saying the quotes in that interview don't sound like her. It's a strange one.

I'm pretty positive the demo Rock a Bye Baby is about the abortion(s).

It definitely sounds like GB could possibly have something to do with a baby she miscarried or aborted. The lyrics "And I who went to sleep as two, woke up as one, now only you remain.", "Don't take me to the tower and take my child away", "I'll be with you one day", and "Twas I who was the hourglass" all sound related to pregnancies and the loss of a child (to me at least).

But who knows what anything means with Stevie. I never got the lyric "You fell in love when I was only 10" until just a few days ago when she said BC was about her affair with Derek Taylor (who got married in 1958, when Stevie was literally 'only 10'.) Now it makes perfect sense.

And then of course Stevie's explanations about what her songs mean are often changing as well.GDW was originally about "groupies" and then later about the perils of their impending cocaine abuse."Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You" was at first a love letter to her fans and later about a young daughter that Joe Walsh had lost.Landslide has also changed meanings a few times.

There've been more than four unfortunately. Some of the would-have-been-fathers were not consulted and have had problems about the decisions. I know one, and another is a friend of a friend. I have heard from seven to nine, not sure which figure to believe. The book "Fleetwood Mac Through The Years" by Edward Wincentsen, 1999 cites seven.

The main thing that bothers me is when Stevie Nicks talks about adopting. I suppose the heavy drug use can excuse a certain amount of bad decision making. Putting anyone on some sort of pedestal is a bad decision in itself, as people have done with Gram Parsons, Michael Jackson, Jim Morrison, etc. etc., it gets as bizarre as anything can. She is a great artist but over four abortions is too high a price for me, then again I knew most of my life I couldn't have kiddies of my own, probably means more to me?

rhiannondontgo
04-03-2013, 09:48 PM
I don't know how I feel about that. On one hand, I'm glad she didn't go through with the pregnancies (considering she was a rockstar with a cocaine addiction). When you've been to rehab and drug counseling and NA, you learn just how awful the use of any drug is on an unborn child. Especially coke. As I said before, using cocaine while pregnant can cause your placenta to literally explode, which can kill you and your baby. It can also cause horrible birth defects, strokes in the baby that cause permanent brain damage, miscarriage, etc etc.

But at the same time, putting a condom on isn't that hard. Neither is taking the pill everyday. There isn't really an excuse as to why she had to get knocked up so many times.

There've been more than four unfortunately. Some of the would-have-been-fathers were not consulted and have had problems about the decisions. I know one, and another is a friend of a friend.

Interesting about the cocaine effects... have to factor that in more I guess.

I can't say who the two men are. The one I know the most about is still sad enough; it definitely ended their relationship back then. The other believes a terminated pregnancy was his, I suppose he might have been wrong. :sorry:

Anything from Ed Wincenstein should be taken with a grain of salt. This is the same guy who claims that Gold Dust Woman contains the lyrics "hail satan, black widow, gold dust woman...". The author is also connected to the Wynnco group which is a born again Christian group that sells memorabilia (way over priced) and tries to convert any buyers from them. So he has an a motive to try and prove the evil ways of Stevie since she is a devil worshiping witch.

Nope, Storms is about Mick.

However, Sara is about a mixture of everybody she was hooking up with or hanging around during that era. From Mick to Don to JD Souther to Lindsey to Sara Recor. She has mentioned that all of those people are in Sara, and all of FM too (though some of the verses about the rest of FM were "cut out".) It's very possible there could be references to the abortion in that song. Many people (including Don Henley, who was the father of her baby), believe Sara is about the abortion. Stevie once confirmed that it's partially about Don, (she said he was building a new home at the time, and that "When you build your house, call me home" was in reference to him, and she was indeed in his house before it was even finished.), then later she said it was a "crock of bull****" and denied it. Though she did admit that she was once pregnant with Don's baby and then aborted it. She also said that Mick was "the great dark wing", and Stevie was the "storm". Sara Recor hinted that "undoing the laces" was a reference to JD Souther. And Stevie has said that Sara was inspired both by Sara Recor/Fleetwood, and by Stevie's pseudonym (She called herself "Sara" sometimes, and that was also the name she used at rehab). Also, she says she would've named her daughter Sara if she ever had one (She's also said she'd name her child Rhiannon, Lily, Amber, Lillian Rebecca, etc etc.) But in 1979, when the song was written, she was still saying she'd name her Sara. Which definitely makes it possible that part of the song could be inspired by her lost baby.

Also, I definitely thing the demo Rock A Bye Baby (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Us2XPdTVLS4) is about the abortion, and how she felt she had to do it for her job's sake, and the fact that Don hurt her feelings by not trying to stop her. (Which is a story i've actually heard many times. The rumour is that he acted indifferent to it and she was upset by his lack of care.) The lyrics obviously point to it.
Now I understand / I can't do my work / He says "She's going now / She's going back" / Rock a bye baby / Oh, she'll be gone at least a year / He knows if he asked her not to go, she wouldn't / "But it's better for her," he says / Rock a bye baby / Bye, baby
Rock a bye baby / It's my baby / Every time / Said you can't save me / Ooh, don't try to save me

Also The Tower/Goodbye Baby sound like their about similar topics.
