As Fleetwood Mac kicks off its first tour in four years, Lindsey Buckingham reflects on the band's drug-fueled nights

Surviving Fleetwood Mac

As Fleetwood Mac kicks off its first tour in four years, Lindsey Buckingham reflects on the band's drug-fueled nights, blowout fights, and unbreakable bonds.

By Brian Hiatt - Men's Journal [April, 2013 issue]

For Lindsey Buckingham, recording an album used to mean doing just enough coke to nail a guitar part at 3AM, getting in screaming fights with Stevie Nicks, and, in one case, allegedly throttling an engineer who erased the wrong track. But that was all long ago. These days, he wakes up at six, has breakfast with his three young kids, hits his home studio alone, and is done by dinner. "It's a nice balance," says Buckingham, 63, who is reuniting with Fleetwood Mac for an arena tour beginning this month (and has a solo live album, One Man Show, out now). "That's the whole lesson for me now. For many years in Fleetwood Mac, it was a study in life out of balance."

You had your first child at 48. Do you recommend late-life fatherhood?

It depends on the man. You could almost say I'm someone who doesn't practice age. I went to a high school reunion a few years back, and all these people seemed 20 years older than me, physically and mentally. So having kids late is good if you're the kind of person who needs to wait - though i 20 years, I may have a different perspective.

Your most recent studio album, Seeds We Sow, got great reviews but didn't sell. Why?

There's a disconnect between the preconceptions that go with being the age I am and what the music is. I sent the ablum to Daniel Glass, who runs [hip record label] Glassnote, and he loved it. Then he played it for his staff, guys in their twenties, and they said, "Well, what are we going to do with it?"

What do you remember about the argument that led to your leaving Fleetwood Mac for a while in 1987?

All I reall is that Stevie ran after me crying and yelling and kind of beating on my back. I don't remember any physical confrontation, not to say there wasn't.

Is it safe to say, though, that ou had a temper in the past?

Sure. it's been well documented. But we were doing all sorts of substances, too, that probably had something to do with blowing certain behaviors way out of proportion.

Has age calmed you down?

some of it was situational. You've got to understand, it was very difficult for me to have Stevie break up with me and to still be in a band with her, to never get a sense of closure. It took its toll emotionally.

How come drugs never got too out of control for your?

The substances that were in the studio were not part of my lifestyle at home. I had to take them so I cold stay up till two our three, and even then, Mick [Fleetwood] would want to go later. My MO if I really wanted to leave would be to say, "I'm going to the bathroom," and then walk out the door and drive away.

Now that pot is practically legal in California, are you tempted by it?

No. I did a lot of that back then, and it was good for a certain kind of abstract thinking. But we all thought we had to be altering our consciousness on a daily basis in order to be creative, which turns out to be crap. It's just about finding your center, that quiet place.

You and Stevie broke up decades ago, but you have to deal with her forever. What's that like?

You get used to it. And for me, getting married and having children was a positive outcome. I wonder sometimes how Stevie feels about the choices she made, because she doesn't have a relationship - she has her career. But there are a few chapters to be written in the Stevie-Lindsey legacy. There's a subtext of love between us, and it would be hard to deny that much of what we've accomplished had something to do with trying to prove something to each other. Maybe that's fu*ked up, but this is someone I've known since I was 16, and I think on some weird level we're still trying to work some things out. There will never be romance there, but there are other kinds of love to be had.

It's about as complicated as a relationship can be.

Oh, my Lord, yes.

also, even if true (and we know it is, we saw pics from his reunion), you don't say stuff like that... i'm sure people from his class would greatly appreciate reading something like that. ;)

anyway, love it when LB just bullsh*ts honestly and in a straightforward way like in this interview, without a care in the world. :xoxo:

I love when Lindsey does these more off the cuff type interviews. We get gems like cheese and this bit:

If you were doing drugs of all sorts in the studio but not at home, how do you explain your physical behavior at a meeting about a tour in Christine's house? I do appreciate him saying his violence is well documented. Now let's move on...

thanks for the link to this. it was great. he's clearly well aware of what's out there about him and, unlike Stevie (whom I love) he doesn't try and spin it into a fantasy alternate magical time. (all entertainers spin to some extent in interviews) but he seems these days so much more someone you'd have a great conversation with than he did in the past.

maybe you are just being facetious : )

but I get that he would want to be respectful to his wife, and his kids are certainly now old enough to read stuff and react to it... and he IS out there doing lots of handholding and love-talk with Stevie... so the man just wants to be clear. Ah well. Isn't it sexier to think that any love between them now has to be unconsummated and smolder under the surface? :D

I kinda feel like it's too sad if they were still romantically in love with each other because it's so seemingly nonnegotiable that they won't be together. Easier if they can actually move on.

I can't imagine what it's like to have to give the same answers to the same questions for thirty years, man.

I thought it was interesting that he says Stevie chased him, crying and yelling and hitting him in the back and he says it's documented about his temper, but he doesn't remember hitting back, but he might have. I wish he would just come clean and either admit it or say it's bullcrap. In BAM Lindsey said Mick's book was hurtful and there were parts of it which were blatantly untrue, but he didn't feel there was a reason to dignify them with an answer. He said that Stevie apologized to him for Mick saying that Lindsey had slapped her -- not that he thought that Stevie needed to apologize.

Lindsey has also said when Mojo asked him about Rhiannon that he certainly may have mocked Stevie on stage and that he might have kicked her too. He just doesn't remember. He said what he does remember is singing off key on purpose during an entire show, just to make them all livid and they were.

huh? how do you read all of this from what he said? i only see love for her, with all her quirks, in what he says about her. as he says - there are all kinds of love. it's a big all-encompassing word. unless your definition is extremely narrow.

this interview comes across the way he comes across when talking to him in person - very direct, surprisingly so actually.

I don't think he thinks she can't find a man. I think he knows from experience that she's found many men. But what he says about Stevie having her career is a repeat of what Stevie has said about herself many times. In Ghosts she says she depends on music like a husband a lyrical embodiment of her interview comments to that effect.

She chose a career over family. She has told 100 interviewers this. She probably reminded Lindsey of this during the 4 days she visited his house, in fact. That's probably why he said it. I think on Dateline with Mick, John and Lindsey surrounding her she explained that they all have families and she doesn't. It's a recurring theme with her. It's not like he just snatched it out of thin air to taunt her.

As for him saying that there would never be anything romantic, since he's married with 3 children, if he said that there could some day be something romantic again (like he hinted during the Dance interviews), I'd think THEN he'd look like a jerk.

In response to his Dance comments about getting back together, Stevie said "over my dead body". He certainly never said anything that blunt about the chance or reuniting with her.

I wouldn't lose your skimming powers for good. I'm sure when they do more tour interviews we'll be getting a lot more of the recycled hash. He has always been able to give good interviews when he wants. But I think when he knows he's going to do a lot of them in a short period of time, he doesn't bother trying and most of the interviewers don't try to be at all original anyway. They don't ask him anything they couldn't have asked in 1979. But sometimes, no matter what they ask, he will respond in rote manner and I bet we'll see a lot more of that this year.

It's just sometimes, when he's got free time on his hands, he'll say something different.

You're probably right Michele. But still, I'm going to enjoy the few and far between and hope that he breaks from the rote a little more often. It makes him seem more hip when he isn't giving the same rehashed answer to every question. Shorter sentences Lindsey. They are your friend. :xoxo:

Didn't Stevie make the "over my dead body" comment after she found out Kristen was pregnant? If so, understandable. Same with his comments now. I think both of them have come to terms with the fact that if they are ever together again, it will not be in this lifetime. Perhaps the next....

This Tango-era incident is still coming up. It sounds like they hit each other. I don't care who threw the first punch, once a physical confrontation starts, it's hard to not to react. No excuses on either side. They were old enough to know better by that point.

I would doubt it. She told Rolling Stone that in October and Will was born in July. Kristen would have been in her first weeks of pregnancy.

Stevie said:

Over my dead body. See, I don't want to be part of that darkness. He knows that. When we're up there singing songs to each other, we probably say more to each other than we ever would in real life. If you offered me a passionate love affair and you offered me a high priestess role in a fabulous castle above a cliff where I can just, like, live a very spiritual kind of religious-library-communing-with-the-stars, learning kind of existence, I'm going to go for the high priestess.

At any rate, the point is Lindsey saying that there's no chance romance is not an insult to Stevie.

I think it's more selective memory -- or just not wanting to discuss specifics of incidences he wishes he could forget. I mean he doesn't ever claim he didn't have his bad moments, he just reminds us he wasn't the only one.

I do wonder if the drugs exacerbated his temper though, or if there was a health issue also involved (the epilepsy?). Then again my sister has an incredible temper that could turn into violent displays in ways that were utterly inexplicable to me, probably as strange as Lindsey's outbursts seemed to have been to people around him, and she never did drugs (she has seizures now but hadn't had them all her life) so it's certainly possible 'au naturale'.

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM: HE AND STEVIE NICKS SHARE 'OTHER KINDS OF LOVE'

Over 35 years after Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks split up, the fumes of their romance lingers on. Buckingham along with Nicks and Fleetwood Mac is currently on tour and performs tomorrow night (April 16th) in Toronto. With a setlist still packed with songs about one another Buckingham says that he and Nicks have learned to keep their relationship alive without the romance, telling Men's Journal, "There's a subtext of love between us, and it would be hard to deny that much of what we've accomplished had something to do with trying to prove something to each other. Maybe that's f***ed up, but this is someone I've known since I was 16, and I think on some weird level we're still trying to work some things out. There will never be romance there, but there are other kinds of love to be had."

He shed some light on how one is able to stay bandmates with someone while in the midst of a tumultuous breakup and beyond: "You get used to it. And for me, getting married and having children was a positive outcome. I wonder sometimes how Stevie feels about the choices she made, because she doesn't really have a relationship -- she has her career. . . there are a few chapters to be written in the Stevie-Lindsey legacy."

Although Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks are busy with Fleetwood Mac through the fall, Buckingham recently told us that he would be amenable to reuniting with Nicks as a revival of their pre-Fleetwood Mac incarnation as Buckingham Nicks: "I think there are things Stevie and I could do, if we could find the common ground to co-exist, y'know, which is probably more up to me than it is her. The Buckingham Nicks album, which has never been released on CD, y'know, who's to say that we couldn't go out and tour that, that would be an interesting concept."

^ sorry, didn't read before posting other than that it came out today... seems to be someone's regurgitation of that men's magazine interview from a while ago.

EDIT: there's also an audio that i haven't listened to yet at that link above.

I think there are things Stevie and I could do, if we could find the common ground to co-exist, y'know, which is probably more up to me than it is her.

I wonder why that would that be? Interesting. The general feeling seems to be that it's Stevie who is always hesitant to work with Lindsey, not the other way around.

Maybe that has to do with all the BN negotiations Hoppy has mentioned they had going on with Keith.
