View Full Version : 5 favorites from Seeds
nothing happening here while rehearsals are going on, so i'm stealing an idea from SN board. although we did analyze SWS in many different days in the past i don't think this was one of them, since i think i might be able to pick 5 favorites and i've always had hard time picking less, just so many great songs there.
pick 5 of your favorite songs from Seeds We Sow, amazon and itunes exclusives included:
"Seeds We Sow"
"In Our Own Time"
"Illumination"
"That's the Way Love Goes"
"Stars Are Crazy"
"When She Comes Down"

"One Take"
"Gone Too Far"

When I first heard SWS, I immediately loved "Stars Are Crazy"and "Rock Away Blind". The other songs took a few listens to grow on me. In rounding out my top 5 favorites, I'd add, "In Our Own Time", "Illumination",and "End of Time". I don't think I will ever care for "When She Comes Down" or the title track.

Rock Away Blind - favorite LB song of all time
In Our Own Time
Illumination
That's The Way Love Goes
Sleeping Around the Corner (this must be just a write in because of poll limitations? So I only picked 4 above.)
decided to add a poll - you can pick as many songs as you like in the poll, more or less than 5. just mark whichever songs you love.
i'm curious whether multiple choice poll will give us different results than when we were choosing only one favorite song, and so many people were listing 3 or 4 in their explanations.
unfortunately poll has only 10 spaces max, so i had to lump together SWS acoustic and electric (i guess the same for EOT but unlike SWS, there's barely any difference between 2 EOT versions), not list SATC, and skip RS cover She Smiled Sweetly.
i did vote for SWS among others, but my vote goes for electric version. although i love concert version of the acoustic SWS, the acoustic album version does nothing for me.

right? i'm still overwhelmed every time i listen to SWS how many great songs, each of which can stand on its own, are on this album. including exclusive downloads (which he still never made available outside US :distress:).
Stars, When She Comes Down, and End of Time are the 3 songs i can take or leave.
and agree, She Smiled Sweetly on the album is not nearly as gorgeous as the original GOS1 version was. (hope he doesn't do similar treatment - or worse - to Deep Dense when he eventually decides to release it officially :p).

1. Seeds We Sow (Acoustic)
2. When she Comes Down.
3. That's the Way Love Goes
4. Illumination
5. Rock Away Blind.
However....just to clarify. I think SWS is one of his weaker efforts. Rehash-mania

Smileys indicate my top 6 (I can't narrow it to 5, sorry).
RAB is my very favorite.
I LOVE both versions of SWS.
No smiley doesn't mean I don't still love it...just that I don't love it as much.
"Seeds We Sow" :)
"In Our Own Time" :)
"Illumination"
"That's the Way Love Goes" :)
"Stars Are Crazy"
"When She Comes Down"
"Rock Away Blind" :):)
"One Take" ... :D Me grinning, every time I hear this solo.
"Gone Too Far" ...I like the lyrics a lot, but still this is the weakest link for me.
"End of Time"
"She Smiled Sweetly"
"End of Time" (acoustic) - Amazon MP3 download
"Seeds We Sow" (electric) - Amazon MP3 download :)

wow, extremely close so far, with everybody but 1 voter loving RAB:
Rock Away Blind 13
In Our Own Time 10
That's the Way Love Goes 10
Illumination 9
Stars Are Crazy 9
Seeds We Sow (acoustic or electric, clarify in the text which one) 9 (<7 votes each version)
Gone Too Far 6
End of Time 6
One Take 5
When She Comes Down 3
9 Seeds votes where specified are divided like this so far:
SWS electric: 4 (Lindsfan, Michele, McTrouble, elle)
SWS acoustic: 4 (Lindsfan, Wildhearted, CAD, bluefox)
(plus 3 people who voted for SWS didn't specify which version).
this means that each version of SWS would have 7 votes the most, so far.

Oh man, I've never heard the electric Seeds We Sow. Why wasn't I coming to these boards as often when SWS was first out?? Ah well sounds intriguing.
My fav is Stars Are Crazy and Lindsey's live set really brought that one home, as well as In Our Own Time. My other 3 picks were Gone Too Far, End of Time and Illumination.

with One Take i love the verses, the overall vibe and message, and the guitar solo. but i think the chorus although hooky is very generic. however the other 3 things i listed more than make up for it.
loving Sleeping Around the Corner feels like a guilty pleasure to me. some of the lyrics are just so lazy (we made sweet love?), and the music is just so pure poppy that it always reminds me of Christine. but i love it anyway.

It does remind me of Christine as well. The mood. The use of the word "darlin" reminds me of her. And although I've never heard her use the term red rover, I imagine that she, John and Mick do. We don't play that game in America so I'm surprised that phrase is really in Lindsey's head.
This reminds me of how Joss Whedon has diverse characters say "safe as houses" and it's somewhat annoying, because some of the people who say it in his world would, but some definitely would NOT.

"Never want to give you a frown" definitely sounds like Christine. Actually, I like the way the SATC lyrics go with Come Out to Play.
He's "Meet me at the border. Wake me up when my papers are in order . . . Sweet darling, I'm your little red rover."
She's "Little darling would you come out to play. Little darling would you come out to stay with me awhile . . .I believe we should stay sister and brother. Oh, don't you know that I'm human and you are a sexy man."

I guess its popular in certain areas of the states. I remember seeing it on Clifford The Big Red Dog. Red Rover, Red Rover, send Clifford on over.
michelej1
03-09-2013, 10:38 PM
Yes, I used to watch Clifford. And I never understood why the fact that he was a giant made him invisible. They wouldn't realize he was there and then they would look up.
But I do remember "London bridge is falling down." Then, you'd hold out your arms and put a person between you and rock them back and forth singing, "take the key and lock her up, lock her up ..."
Thinking about the comment that One Take doesn't seem to go with the rest of the album, I guess that might have been the thinking with SATC too. Or maybe Lindsey just thought it was a little frivolous. But I definitely am uncomfortable with bonus songs in the digital age, where it's sometimes hard to get them back with the original album, simply because they were downloaded in different places.
I guess it's no different than the old days, when we were stuck with them as b sides on a 45 inch single. But it's maddening. I downloaded SATC onto a disc and I can play that disc in my car, but my car won't download it onto the car's hard drive where the rest of SWS is, for some unknown DRM reason.

I can't really give you a reason other than it's a great song. The guitar is lovely and the melody is bittersweet. But, as with all things, that's highly subjective.
My one gripe (and it's a small one that applies to the whole album) is that I'd have tidied up the mix a little. The song itself is IMO one of the best of his career.

You don't find it a little repetitive?
I guess the biggest reason why I don't listen to it very often is that I don't really enjoy the chorus.

I'm shocked at how poorly One Take has done. Not only is it my favorite song on the album. It's in my top 5 Lindsey songs ever, solo or Mac. The rest of my top 5 is:
1. One Take
2. Illumination
3. In Our Own Time
4. Rock Away Blind
5. The way love goes
haven't looked at this poll in a while... interesting how many songs are practically even in the lead! just tells you how many amazing songs are on this album!!
and none of them are being done on this Fleetwood Mac tour unfortunately :(
but we do have Sad Angel which is in a vein of some of the Seeds songs, although less punkish or weird i guess, so at least there's that! :]

I'll have to admit, as being a new Lindsey fan, "Rock Away Blind" took a while to grow on me. But after it did, I couldn't stop listening to it. As for the others, I'm surprised "Stars Are Crazy" isn't/wasn't getting more love since it's such a beautiful song. "When She Comes Down" is another of my favorites just because of the way it sounds, and the emotions he brings to it. "In Our Own Time" because of it's rockish feel and killer guitar. And "That's the Way that Love Goes" probably in the same vein as "Time."
But again, they are all excellent in their own way. It just look Lindsey's solo stuff to grow on me more than Mac stuff and proves he's a master songwriter and guitarist.

I also love Stars Are Crazy. Even though he is not the original songwriter, what he did with it is so beautiful and soulful, and the lyrics feel very personal.
I've only been a Lindsey fan since Nov 2011, when I saw the Small Machine tour, and I was just blown away (before that, he was 'that good guitarist from Fleetwood Mac'). Just wanted to say it's been an enjoyable ride to date discovering all his solo work for the last year and a half or so; hope you enjoy same.
BTW, I almost always prefer his live recordings to studio - don't know why he over-engineered his voice so much on SWS...on my mixes, I tended to substitute songs from Small Machine DVD or other places...

I prefer some of his live recordings to the album versions as well: "Stars" is a good example because I had heard the live version from the Small Machine first and then the album version. Now, I like both but still hold the live version in higher regard. And yeah, I also don't know why he over-engineered his voice on SWS - sometimes it sounds really good, other times it sounds weird. Is he embarrassed of his voice that he feels the need to do that or does he just want to make it sound cool? I'm just purely speculating here.
I also have yet to see Lindsey live, but since hearing most of his music I really, really want to if he goes on tour again. Seeing the Mac in June though for the first time! So excited!

I'm one of the few, I think, who loves WSCD. It is gorgeous, and very Lindsey to me. I'm not going to blast it in the car on my way to work, but it's a great song, and I listen to it sometimes in the evening, and I wouldn't dream of skipping it, or any other song on my favorite Lindsey album.
I love your last statement so much. His stuff does often take time to fully appreciate, but that's what makes it so good. If you're willing and able to invest a little extra time in him, more often than not, he'll reward you. There's so much to love in his music, and I never tire of his songs, since it seems like I'm always hearing something new with each listen. Most people won't take that time, and will simply write his music off as being too weird. He's said it himself, that his music isn't for everyone. It's for those that get it, and appreciate it for what it is.

You sound like me a couple years ago. I much preferred live versions to albums, but as I said, he keeps growing on me, and now I really have no preference! In fact, though I understand exactly what you mean about the over production, and I used to wonder the same thing about if he didn't like his voice, I really don't think his voice is all that engineered on SWS. It actually sounds like his real voice to me, maybe a bit higher, but not glaringly so. His voice in concert is stronger, and he sings more in lower registers, but when he sings in his higher register, it sounds a lot like his voice on his albums to me. I also don't think he's embarrassed by his voice in the least (as well he shouldn't be!). Once you've seen him live, you won't wonder about that any more  I think he just likes that particular sound, and of course, he loves tweaking and perfecting everything he does.
I hope he tours in 2014. In fact, I'll be in serious depression if he doesn't :( His live show is awe inspiring, and whatever it takes, you should find a way to go. No way will you regret it, and it may be the best concert you ever go to

No way will you regret it, and it may be the best concert you ever go to
You and me both! So he better!
And it WILL be best concert you ever go to! ;):D

I'm one of the few, I think, who loves WSCD.
I think it's great. When I heard about it, I pre-judged as I did with "Sad Angel." I thought this love song to Kristen would be sappy, but then when I listened it was complex, dramatic and unpredictable. It's unusual and I value that.

Welcome to The Ledge, SadAngel. And welcome SHN, too :wavey:

And that's exactly what I did. I started off slowly, and I don't actually remember which of his albums I first listened to, it may have been Seeds We Sow. And you are absolutely right in saying that at each listen there always seems to be something new to listen to. I'm listening to Gone Too Far right now, a song I had dismissed pretty much but now love.
And he did say that! I remember distinctly watching a youtube vid where he says the exact thing!I hope I won't wonder anymore when/if I ever see him live! I've watched so many videos from people who've gone and it just seems like an amazing experience. Yes, let's hope for a tour in 2014! For now, I'm satisfied with the Mac show I'm going to in about 60 days.
Thanks for the welcome, Lindsfan!

Possibly my favorite on the album. Just luscious and ephemeral.

I agree w the above posts! Now that I have seen my share of area Mac shows (possibly Newark on 24th????), I feel like, ok , Mac now finish touring already so Lindsey can get his next solo tour together:laugh::laugh:
Seriously, when I think of the effort and expense and size of crowd, etc. with seeing FM, I shake my head in amazement that I can sit one foot from his mike stand at a place like bb kings for about $50 tops and only a couple hundred people in the room! They are such great shows!

End Of Time...either version.
Really REALLY disappointed in the re-recording of "She Smiled Sweetly". The original leaked GOS version is darned near even better than the Rolling Stones' original. He should've just left it alone and released that version.

I skip that. I'm glad he never finalized Blue Turns to Gray, which I also loved.

Are there any songs that we think sound better than the demo?
Now, for me, the one that comes close is My Little Demon. I don't exactly think My Little Demon sounds better, but it's different and I like having both. But there are many songs that people say sounded better before. I'm not sure I agree, but do you think there are any that sounded better when officially recorded and released?
I love Given Thing, Deep Dense and Steve's Riff and I want them finished, but I would have to trust Lindsey not to ruin them.

There is a demo for My Little Demon?

There is a demo for My Little Demon?
Yes. Maybe I'm using the wrong word and shouldn't call it "demo." But there is a rough version of it and it is slower and it gives me a different vibe. The Dance version is like saying, "I want to keep that volatile side of me tamed," and the slow version is saying, "it's all that I can do to keep from coming after you sexually."
But maybe that's just the way I hear it:laugh:.

If you don't have it yet, PM me your email and I'll send you what's on my computer. You know how this junk is labeled so without listening you never know what's duplicated or not. One says guitar, one says track, one says rare demo. They're slightly different in file size length, so I'll send all.

Wow, I thought I had already posted in this thread, but guess I never did.
I haven't listened to SWS in a long time, so I decided to crank it late this evening. I do believe SWS has now taken the My Fave LB Album title, barely bumping ahead of OOTC. There is a song on OOTC that I skip (All My Sorrows), so that makes SWS a perfect album for me. I don't skip any of the songs, although, I agree that his recording of She Smiled Sweetly was better back in the day.
Here are my top 5:
1. Stars Are Crazy - He didn't write it, but his interpretation is phenomenal. It takes me to another place when I listen to it.
2. Rock Away Blind - This song just makes me happy. The ending solo is just....I can't even....it's gorgeous!
3. In Our Own Time - I love his delivery of this song. It's the perfect Crank-This-Song-Up-In-The-Car tune!
4. One Take - It's punky Lindsey! Well, as punk as he'll ever be. Love it.
5. Illumination - Love the guitar work and it's just an interesting song.

Hmmm, I wonder if this is the same "My Little Demon" that I got from this "Secret Gift of Screws" album that I found via this blog post (http://luckypsychichut.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-secret-gift-of-screws.html). I'd like to compare them as well if you're willing to PM.:D
