my 2 least favorite FM albums with LB... so it is mostly which song i dislike less :D

so it's 4 for Mirage and 5 for Tango, although if i counted the number of songs i liked on Tango vs the number i liked on Mirage, plus the songs that i really dislike on each, Mirage would have a slightest edge as a bit more likable.

pasting from the other thread my track by track opinion for each -

1) Isn't It Midnight - boring
2) Tango In The Night - eh, i know many love it but not my thing
3) Big Love - eh, doesn't hold the candle to the solo version
4) When I See You Again - yuck
5) Seven Wonders - boring generic pop fluff
6) Welcome To The Room... Sara - yuck
7) Caroline - blah
8) Family Man - yuck
9) You And I Part II - blah
10) Little Lies - cute pop although not my thing
11) Everywhere - same as little lies
12) Mystified - don't care for it
.
1. "Love in Store" - eh
2. "Can't Go Back" - catchy
3. "That's Alright" - heh
4. "Book of Love" - heh
5. "Gypsy" Nicks - can't stand it
6. "Only Over You" - eh
Side two
1. "Empire State" - yuck
2. "Straight Back" - blah
3. "Hold Me" - pop perfection
4. "Oh Diane" - blah
5. "Eyes of the World" - pop perfection
6. "Wish You Were Here" - blah

Can't Go Back, Hold Me and Eyes of the World are really the only songs i love from either album.

i can recognize Little Lies and Everywhere and perhaps that album version of Big Love as well crafted pop songs, just not my thing.

i can stand Tango (the song) if i have to.

i really don't care for others, and don't like to listen to them.

Thanks Artemis, I think we pretty much agreed on all, esp Mystified (I really didn't want to vote on that one, either) But went with LB's production on the song, I suppose.

These albums are pretty easy with obvious stand outs and a cpl duds.

Wow, words can not express my confussion. A fan of the Band doesn't like 85-90% of the 80's work by the Mac, yet is still a fan, as in fanatic?

It makes me wonder how many "fans" here or otherwise are really just fans of particular solo artists. I know LB has them, as well as Stevie. I admire the fact that you are outspoken about it, elle, as you should be.

Still, I am puzzeled by the great disdain of the 80's albums. I know many do not like the 80's sound and the over-production of TITN. I guess one would have had to grow up in that era to appreciate the beauty of it all. I love the80's sound, however, my sister loathes it and we are only 2 years apart. I sorta get it, I suppose.

i will go see the Mac this year and pay their over-inflated ridiculous prices b/c i can't resist not seeing LB when he's out there plus i can have some fun with many friends i met through LB solo gigs.

Can't Go Back vs Seven Wonders
That's Alright vs Everywhere
Book of Love vs Caroline
Gypsy vs Tango In The Night
Only Over You vs Mystified - this was tough, because I don't like either, but I can bare "Only Over You" more.

Because there are discussions of LB music in this forum too? There are plenty of SN fans that post in here too, if you want everyone who is primarily an LB or SN fan (or any other band member) to stop posting here it will be considerably quieter. And while some of us may be fans of only a certain band member, right now FM is what is happening so this is where the conversation is.

I love "Tango In The Night" and consider "Mirage" as the weakest album since "Kiln House", so this was pretty easy.
Though the title track is one of my favourite songs on "Tango In The Night", "Gypsy" is my favourite FM-song overall (along with "Sara").

I would love to hear more songs from "Tango In The Night" live than just "Big Love" - especially "Isn't It Midnight".

Oh, I'm not saying you shouldn't post, just as I said wondering why put the effort it? I'm a Stevie solo fan more so than a Mac fan (but I still love the Mac and not just for Stevie's songs either!) and really not a Lindsey solo fan, so I don't post in the Lindsey section of the board because I know I'd never get on with the Lindsey solo fans as I cannot bare the majority of his solo stuff. I'm also not really a fan of the pre-Buckingham Nicks era Mac, aside from a few songs, so I don't post in their either.

I would have thought, not being a Fleetwood Mac fan, that a Fleetwood Mac message board wouldn't be of much interest to you.

So why don't you just stick to the SN board since that's what you're saying LB fans should do?

Why put in the effort? For a little variety? To show another point/side? Everyone doesn't always have to agree and great discussions come from differing opinions. If everyone felt the same what would be the point of a discussion board?

whether i like it or not Lindsey is going to spend the next year touring with FM. there will be no LB solo in 2013, for the most part. i still love majority of his songs, whether or not they are with FM or solo.

this forum is the appropriate place to discuss any FM-related tour info, not LB or SN forums, wouldn't you agree?

i'm assuming you are counting every album FM ever released in those 80%? however, this is RUMOURS lineup forum, so if you think LB contributed only 20% of the music of that lineup, you should probably re-check your math.

Hey, although I see where you are coming from TheWILDheart, and you are entitled to your opinion, I thank you for expressing it. This post was not intended to start another "war of the roses" (actually that be a cool Stevie title) ;)

The main jest of it was to see where the fans opinions lie as oppossed to comparing Dreams against Rhiannon against Silver Girl. Or GYOW against Tusk against WATL. Not something of a landslide while pitting The Chain up against (ehh) Mystified or Landslide vs WISYA

True appreciation will come out when comparing solid studio albums against one another, rather than individual artist songs.

you know, i wonder whether we actually have a difference in opinion of what a FM fan is?

do you like PG era? THAT is really FM to me, frankly. although i only know hits from that era (and i'm not talking about US hits), i think among that whole FM bunch, there's no doubt this guy is (or at least used to be) an extremely talented genius. in the little time he was active he wrote some of the most timeless songs ever. (imo)

re the 80s, i lived in Europe and what i loved and listened to at the time was so-called "alternative" music (in the US most of that kind of music didn't seem to penetrate before 90s much). i guess it was outgrowth of late 70s new wave and punk? idk. so yeah 80s FM was definitely and still is not my thing.

about Gypsy - LB has stated numerous times that is a song on which he's the most proud of his work. still doesn't mean i need to like it just b/c everybody (whatever that means lol) else including LB thinks it's great, no?

now re being an FM *fan* vs a fan of an individual artist who is a part of FM, maybe we should have a thread in this forum where each one of us lists how many songs from our non-favorite Rumours era songwriter we actually LOVE, and then see where we actually stand?

so which non-SN FM songs do you love, TheWILDheart?

I couldn't agree more, and of course without Peter Green, the Fleetwood Mac that went on to be one of the biggest selling bands in the world would not exist. However, I am (generally speaking) not a blues fan. I also prefer female singers (not sure why!), but that doesn't mean I don't absolutely adore a lot of Lindsey's FM stuff.

I may have miss-understood or miss-read what you posted, but it came across that you weren't a fan of Fleetwood Mac at all. At least, not the Rumours line up. And it struck me as being a little odd that someone who is not a fan of the music of this line up would be posting in a board dedicated too it. I wouldn't and don't post in the Lindsey board, because I a. don't know enough about his solo music to really contribute and b. don't like any of it anyway, so it doesn't interest me.

so which non-SN FM songs do you love, TheWILDheart?

I like most of the BN era stuff and some of the earlier stuff, although I've not heard all the albums. I've picked a selection below:

Green Manalishi
Hypnotized
Why
Spare Me A Little Of Your Love
Sentimental Lady
Remember Me
Emerald Eyes
Monday Morning
Blue Letter
Say You Love Me
I'm So Afraid
Second Hand News
Never Going Back Again
Go Your Own Way
Songbird
You Make Loving Fun
Over and Over
The Ledge
Think About Me
Save Me A Place
Never Make Me Cry
I Know I'm Not Wrong
Tusk
Love In Store
Book of Love
Eyes Of the World
Big Love
Everywhere
Isn't It Midnight
Little Lies
Tango In The Night
Skies The Limit
In The Back of My Mind
Hard Feelings
Temporary One
Steal Your Heart Away
Peacekeeper
Come
Miranda

Love all these songs. Like I said, I'm a Fleetwood Mac fan. I consider Stevie solo and Fleetwood Mac 2 different entities and always have.

i'll have to do mine some time later today but i can tell you that the FM songs i actually love constitute much shorter list than yours. there are many more i like though... and many i dislike, including LB's. but i still think that a lot of his FM material is stellar, so i guess that would go into FM fandom... since GYOW, SHN, Tusk or WATL is definitely not lb solo material.

you know looking at all LB's FM songs you love, i bet you'd actually love a lot of his solo material if it weren't for a. you listed above.

i actually know what is considered Rumours era material and love a lot of it, so that would be a bit different than commenting on solo career if you are not familiar with most solo material. ;) that said, we welcome anybody who wants to contribute to LB board, cotrary to popular opinions i don't think you have to be a fan in order to discuss and contribute.

Love all these songs. Like I said, I'm a Fleetwood Mac fan. I consider Stevie solo and Fleetwood Mac 2 different entities and always have.

hmm, do i consider big machine and small machine 2 separate entities? my wallet certainly does!

Hey, if I need to know any Lindsey solo info, I'll jump over there .

I did buy "Under The Skin" when it came out and enjoyed it, though I haven't listened to it in forever! I've listened to both "Go Insane" and "Out Of The Cradle" about twice in 20 years and neither appealed much. I actually went to the toilet during "Go Insane" on the Unleashed tour lol. I do love a lot of his FM material, as you can see from the above list and I will forever worship the man for his amazing efforts to create such fantastic albums - Rumours and Tusk wouldn't have happened without him. And I, of course, have Lindsey to thank for Stevie having a career (and vice versa - as much as they bitch about eachother, neither would've had a career without the other)

I'm a TOTAL Chiffon Head, and the first to admit it, though there are Stevie songs I cannot BARE as I'm sure there are Lindsey songs for you ("When I See You Again"....wtf was that!?)

hmm, do i consider big machine and small machine 2 separate entities? my wallet certainly does!

Love In Store vs Big Love - This is the toughest ones for me. Love In Store has such a breezy, good time feel to it and it's one of, if not thee, favourite Christine song of mine post-Tusk. But I still go for that Big Love!
Can't Go Back vs Seven Wonders - This is probably the second toughest for me. Three years ago would've been reversed easily though.
That's Alright vs Everywhere
Book of Love vs Caroline
Gypsy vs Tango in the Night - Is this sacrilege?
Only Over You vs Mystified
Empire State vs Little Lies
Straight Back vs Family Man - I guess this is..?
Hold Me vs Welcome to the Room Sara - Sometimes I feel like the only fan that likes WttRS but I find it so effective in it's sadness. I feel like a wuss whenever I listen to it because I just want to tear up haha. I don't though, I'm 24...

Ok, the results are in and this is the Best album that us fans have chosen:

BL 14 votes vs love in store w/ 7
SW 14 votes vs cant go back 7
That's Alright 13 votes vs everywhere 8
Caroline 13 vs BOL 9
Gypsy 14 vs TITN 6
Mystified (???) 11 vs OOY 10
LL 20 vs ES w/ 1 (no surprise here, but I do like ES)
Stand Back..umm I mean Straight Back 13 vs FM 8
HM 17 vs WTTRS 3
IIM 16 vs Oh Diane 5
EOTW 18 vs WISYA 3
WYWH 12 vs Y&I 9

So, we have a tie amongst fans, Mirage 6, Tango 6 make the perfect album.

Some of you may be questioning why some songs received 20 votes, while others 21. Well, the calculations may be off be 1 or 2 pts, but no more.

In the event of a “TIE”vote (there were several), it was at my discretion to chose the winning song. Most times I would chose the one with least amount of votes (not that it really mattered at that point) Other times, for elle, or some posters I know a little better, I would chose the LB song, etc. This is why it is important (only in our happy lil FM community) to just chose “one”. Please don't make me decide.

Interestingly enough LB received 3 votes, SN 4, CM 5

I'm surprised (and secretly delighted) that WISYA and WTTRS received 3 votes each, none of them mine.

So, the Perfect 80's album/track listing according to us (rearrange as you please) is:

Big Love
Seven Wonders
That's Alright
Caroline
Gypsy
Mystified
Little Lies
Straight Back
Hold Me
Isn't It Midnight
Eyes of the World
Wish You Were Here

Hidden Bonus track: Tango In The Night;)

Thank you all for sharing input and ideas here. This, IMO is the only accurate way to gauge fans opinions to the albums/songs over the years, opposed to listing vote: Little Lies vs. Sugar Daddy, Rhiannon against WISYA, GYOW vs. WMYTYTO, etc.

This poll/thread also opens the door to many great discusions/ideas about what we, the fans like/dislike about our band. What works for us and doesn't work or appeal to us. Keep the conversation going, whether it is in agreement or not.

Special thanks to theWILDheart and elle for (hijacking)/developing/creating a new thread/discusion from this poll. :D :xoxo:

I think Mirage is the stronger work. It was the last FM album to incorporate that great, lounging So. Cal pop/rock sound, FM's most "romantic" album to date. But Lindsey had the weakest material overall on both Mirage and Tango because he was working so hard to perfect everyone else's songs. Tango has also not aged very well with its synthetic productions. (Say You Will will have the same problem.)

I agree, some good to great songs but as for timeless production, I don't think so. Everyone (a hyperbole, but whatever) always talks about why Rumours etc ages so well and it has a lot to do with how it, and the first four albums, really don't sound like TITN or SYW, imo.

9. Hold Me vs. Welcome To The Room Sara
10. Oh Diane vs. Isn't It Midnight
11. Eyes Of The World vs. When I See You Again
12. Wish You Were Here vs. You & I ii

Explanation:

1. Big Love is probably my favourite Lindsey song, I really love LIS too though... had to pick BL though
2. Not very hard to decide at all. Seven Wonders is Stevie's best off the album plus don't really like CGB
3. Just recently i have shown a really strong liking for That's Alright, so i had a frown a bit at this one, but I mean c'mon it's Everywhere. Everywhere is amazing!
4. I just love Caroline. Not sure if it's officially about Carol but it is in my head so I love it! I love when he trash talks (or sings) about her :D
5. Tango is good but not even close to Gypsy! Gypsy by far!
6. This was a really tough one to decide on. But i chose OOY because it's got a little kick to it. "I'm AAAAAAwta my mind" brilliance.
7. Very fews songs compete with Little Lies. LL is definetely one of my top 5 fav FM songs, and my fav Chris song!
8. Straight back is VERY underrated! It kinda reminds me of Dreams... :/ Not quite sure why... The lyrics are sheer genius
9. I do like WTRS but Hold Me is catchy as hell, and WTRS could put me to sleep.
10. Isn't It Midnight without a doubt! Oh Diane, is another one of my fav Lindsey songs, but IIM is freakin awesome! Rock On!!!
11. Chaned this one last minute, EOTW is really good, but I have recently shown an interest in WISYA, plus it's Stevie's soo...
12. WYWH kinda reminds me of Songbird, but it's still good. I chose Y&i2 because it's pretty catchy, lyrics are a little repetitive but who cares!?

Willamette Week, June 26, 2013 Reed Jackson on Fleetwood Mac

http://www.wweek.com/portland/article-20815-reed_jackson_on_fleetwood_mac.html

Unlike many other kids I know, my parents didn’t introduce me to Fleetwood Mac. Between my jazzhead father and Motown-loving mother, there were hardly any rock records in my house growing up. My love of the group isn’t rooted in childhood nostalgia. It is purely out of love for their tunes. As soon as I first heard “Dreams” on KBOO, I knew the Mac would become one of my favorites. A few years after I began collecting vinyl, I had nearly their entire discography on wax, from their early, bluesy stuff to 12-inch singles for huge hits like “Rhiannon.” Only one album was missing from my collection: 1982’s Mirage. Fans consider it their “sellout” record, but to me, that’s when the band’s organic sound found an alluring smoothness—“Gypsy” will forever be my summertime cool-out jam.

It took me about three years to find the album. Crusty, old record-store owners would laugh at me, asking why they would even consider keeping Mirage in stock. I dug through stacks of the band’s records, only to discover endless copies of Rumours and Heroes Are Hard to Find. Even Lindsey Buckingham’s solo albums were easier to find. Not even the dollar bins had a dinged-up version. Somehow, this had become my holy grail record—an album a lot of people probably adopted from their parents, then threw out.

In 2012, I flew down to L.A. to visit my girlfriend, who I’d been in a long-distance relationship with since meeting at the Goodfoot in Southeast Portland. Two days into the trip, we broke up. Dejected, I decided to do some shopping at Hollywood’s massive Amoeba Music record store. And that’s when I saw it: that beautiful, purple-tinged cover of Buckingham and Stevie Nicks dancing, all mine for the buying. I damn near cried. It was as if God said, in a burnt-out hippie voice, “Cheer up. Who needs a girlfriend when you have Stevie?”

When I got back to Portland, the first thing I did was open the windows to my overstuffed basement room and put the record on. “Gypsy” was as smooth as ever; “Hold Me” still catchy as hell. My world was finally whole.

Of course, I could have just ordered the album online years earlier. But what’s the fun in that?

Seems like an arbitrary comparison to compare two albums based on track order, but I'll play.

This is a hard one.
Not sure if there's any reason to compare.
Tango In The Night features Stevie Nicks's worst batch of songs and
her most horrible/weakest vocals of her career (aside from her parts on
Little Lies).
But the album was a high point for Christine McVie and broke new ground
for Buckingham. Overall, I don't think it stands up over time due to
the heavy 80's production/sound.

Mirage is a better album - more cohesive and with stronger songs, timeless
harmonies and gorgeous vocals from Stevie Nicks.

Love In Store vs Big Love (toss up)
Can't Go Back vs Seven Wonders
That's Alright vs Everywhere
Book of Love vs Caroline (neither :distress:...although AFTER hearing OotC, "Caroline" is a little less annoying)
Gypsy vs Tango in the Night (the 3rd easiest choice)
Only Over You vs Mystified (another toss up)
Empire State vs Little Lies (by a RCH)
Straight Back vs Family Man
Hold Me vs Welcome to the Room...Sara (probably the 2nd easiest choice of the poll)
Oh Diane vs Isn't It Midnight (by far THE easiest, "Oh Diane" is Bottom 5 Fleetwood Mac songs ever released)
Eyes Of The World vs When I See You Again
Wish You Were Here vs You & I, Part 2 -

Both albums are probably my least played Fleetwood Mac albums.

In my iPod playist of "Fleetwood Mac Thru The Years". Only one Mirage song made the cut (DUH! "Gypsy"), 2 from Tango In The Night ("Isn't It Midnight", "Big Love")

They are such different albums that a "this over that" preference is odd. But here we go:

Love in Store vs. Big Love

Can't Go Back vs. Seven Wonders

That's Alright vs. Everywhere (The demo of Everywhere is better than either)

Book of Love vs. Caroline

Gypsy vs. Tango in the Night

Only Over You vs. Mystified (The only tough choice so far)

Empire State vs. Little Lies

Straight Back vs. Family Man

Hold Me vs. Welcome to the Room

Oh Diane vs. Isn't it Midnight

Eyes of the World vs When I See You Again

Wish You Were Here vs. You and I, Part II

Mirage 10, Tango 2

As much as I like listening to both albums, when I pit the songs next to each other in this way I realize Mirage has a lot more substance than Tango. Almost every song on Tango is catchy, quirky, and calculated; whereas the songs on Mirage have genuine charm and character.

Only Little Lies seems to hold up and trump many (but not all) of the Mirage tunes.

As I said above, the demo version of "Everywhere" is fantastic; the studio version seems almost sickeningly sweet.

But then tthe Rumours-era demo for That's Alright trumps the album version, too.

The live version of Eyes of the World would probably trump When I See You Again for me ... but EOTW is almost a different song live these days to what was recorded in studio in the 80's. And I think you can only fairly compare a live song with another live song, and a studio song with another studio song. I like Tango in the Night but Gypsy is special to me being the song that really made me fall in love with the Mac. My favourite version of Gypsy is the Live in Boston 2003 performance, Stevie's age at the time and the look in her eyes really lends itself to the nostalgia in the lyrics like she's looking back on her turbulent past, all her traipsing around the globe. Lindsey nailed the guitar solo that night naturally and his guttural cries of "Lightning strikes, maybe once, maybe twice" add a lot to the song. I like how Stevie used to introduce the song with "This is for all the gypsies out there"... just like how Rhiannon in 2013 is missing "This is a song about an old Welsh witch". ;)

Finally, Family Man is just god-awful. Dare I say it ...even worse than Welcome to the Room...Sara.

Lindsey's voice on Oh Diane is like butter. And When I See You again is tragically wonderful.

I can't stand either - they're my least favourite Lindsey-Mac and Stevie-Mac songs.

"Oh Diane" is just naff. I don't like that whole 60's thing and the lyrics are cringe worthy.

"When I See You Again" isn't an overly dreadful lyric - not her best though. But her voice, OH MY, her voice. Poor Stevie sounds like an old bag pipe on it.

I think it's more of a 50s vibe than a 60s. I like it. It's not great lyrics but like I said, I just like the vocal so much I don't really care.

That's the beauty of it, my friend.

LOL, loads of stuff comes up again and again. And there's always new members or members who missed the last thread. And I haven't seen a thread like this. There's been a few Mirage vs Tango threads but not a track by track that I noticed - my apologies if it's a duplicate.

Oh well, only a bit of fun anyway

Only Over You vs Mystified Neither Can I vote Gypsy, instead?

Is that because you can't chose between them because you like them or you dislike them both equally?

Thank you! I was just waiting for someone to come up with the exact answers I'd give.

Cuz I'm lazy like that. ;)

Although I have to agree with FierySequences about Mystified vs. Only Over You. Those are some seriously underwhelming choices. I almost left it up to a coin toss.

Just realizing that this band of which I am a diehard fan only gave us two albums in the entire decade of the '80's (plus BTM). And gave us virtually nothing in the '90's.

[From an AV Article on favorite guitar solos. November 22, 2013]

http://www.avclub.com/article/the-av-clubs-favorite-guitar-solos-105894

Noah Cruickshank

Well, I guess I’m going to play copycat to Erik here, since my current favorite guitar solo is also one by Lindsey Buckingham, on “Gypsy” from 1982’s Mirage. The album is rightly maligned (it probably ties Say You Will as worst album by the “classic lineup”), but it does also house some of the band’s best work. “Gypsy” is a heartbreaking song all by itself, written for Stevie Nicks’ solo album Bella Donna while she suffered from the loss of a good friend. Sometimes an intrusive solo can ruin an emotional song, and it’s a testament to Buckingham’s reserve that his solo, which closes out the song, feels more like an extra verse than noodling for its own sake. It’s also brilliant in its minimalism—he only uses about three notes, but slowly introduces syncopation or a rare flourish to give the entire solo a beautiful progression. It sounds simple, but is most likely as difficult as most famous guitar solos. Buckingham is regarded as one of the greatest guitarists in pop, and “Gypsy” proves the hype without needless posturing or pyrotechnics.
