Rhiannon: She rules her life like a fine skylark

False, Rhiannon is perfect.

In my opinion, of course.

But I'll raise you:

Any time Stevie rhymes a word with the same word - ie, "love" in If Anyone Falls, "this" in Wide Sargasso Sea, "glass" in You Can't Fix This, "words" in ELY

"Oh yes he loved her but he was still an Englishman" - Wide Sargasso Sea (about half of this song, honestly..)

"She was so not that girl" - Everybody Loves You

And the days became worse,
For the ones she had lost
Children of the world,
The forgotten chimpanzee
In the eyes of the world,
You have done so much for me

I remember Rolling Stone's scathing review of The Wild Heart singled out this line from "Gate and Garden", "...do I love you, well I always did...", complaining that there was no dance of souls, nothing to lure us into caring. While I agree that GAG isn't a very good song, it's odd that RS would choose that rather innocuous line as a lyrical clunker.

For pure clunkers, some that come to mind are:
Touched by an Angel: "Everything was the same except everything was different"
WISYA: "...and she stares at the stairs, there are many things to stare at these days..." (very amateurish sounding alliteration)
Illume: "I am a cliff dweller from the old school"
Jane: "children of the world, the forgotten chimpanzee..." (probably the most obvious example and a line that unfortunately sinks an otherwise touching and pretty song)

Maybe not a clunker, but did the line "...in the middle of my room I did not hear from you" ever strike anyone else as being a very oddly worded statement?

Goodbye Baby - yes I was outspoken

Kick It - I'm waited for in Egypt, just something I must do

Rose Garden - roses dangling down to the ground

GHW - lousy lovers

Sisters of the Moon - many black widow spiders make more sound than she

Sara - and a starling flew for days

Beautiful Child - when I was only ten

 I think they're pretty great. However, I hate how she rhymes "sea" with "honey."

Not Make Believe - It hurts my self esteem, it hurts my everything; I am reeling... ooh, it hurts my feelings

One More Big Time... - Undercover music lover

Paper Doll - She refused to wear her coat

Listen to the Rain - You're a frontliner. Phantom of the Opera. Basically, the whole song.

Love is Like a River - I haven't burned a candle in a real long time

Two Kinds of Love - I talked to my famous friend last night

Touched by an Angel: "Everything was the same except everything was different"

I always liked this line for some reason. I have NO idea but I'm assuming this song is about Stevie/Lindsey and the reformation of Fleetwood Mac around The Dance era (Please someone correct me if I'm wrong). I think it is a neat line because it's like they are together again so in that way it's the same and familiar and maybe great in the moment but in the end, there's really no way it will ever be the same.

I actually like NMB "hurts my everything." I think the language matches the message and captures that feeling you get when someone can hurt you in ways you thought you'd outgrown. All the childish pain resurfaces. Old buttons get pushed that you no longer thought even worked any more. I'm mature. I'm successful. How is it you have the power to make me feel like I'm 12 and insecure again. Given the import of the song, it's fitting that it uses childish language to describe it.

I hate the famous ones: Silver Girl and Jane. Almost too common to mention.

Although I like Love Changes, in a way I think these lyrics are too literal. The car crash simile is too graphic, so I'm thinking more about seeing an actual car accident on the road than I am about the emotion of walking away from a relationship. I'm kind of torn. In a way, I do think the words work, but in a way I don't:

When love changes in the flash of an eye,
it leaves people burning by the side of the road.
You stand there you got nothing to hold

I used to refer to this song as the 'How Many Broadway Musicals Can Stevie Fit Into A Song?' Song because of that line and the 'There's no Beauty and the Beast here,' line.
A shame, really, because with more work it could have been a good song. I do have to admit that the 1991 version is a tad better.

Her most unbelievable lyric she ever wrote: "I sing for the things money can't buy"...uhm, not quite Stevie.

Worst references in songs for me are those pesky doors and stares/stairs, (although I forgive her for sitting in her chair for months just staring), the many doors in hallways, staring at stairs, having someone drag her up the stairs, sets of doors being the colour of honey, downstairs where the big old house is hers. Yuck.

I find that sometimes the confusion in Stevie's lyrics come from how she sometimes phrases her lyrics. See if this makes more sense:

Stand back in the middle of my room -
I did not hear from you!

Another lyric along those lines:

Come in, out of the darkness you are in love with
And I'm ready to sail

I love the song Sable On Blonde, but find the line "Just how deep do you hold that dream in your hands in each night" rather weak, odd or even slightly pornographic.

Ok. This doesn't bother me. In fact, I kind of like the oddity of it. But as long as you're talking about rooms and hearing, I think If Anyone Falls is funny.

I hear a voice in the room next to mine
Feels good sounds good
Closes the door from behind
And another voice comes thru the door

I feel like she's hearing something going on in the hotel room next to her. But how does she know the unseen person closes the door from behind? Well, I guess it's behind (or more distant) than the first voice she heard. Also, if the guy she was hearing in the hotel room was alone, until the other voice came along, why could she hear him. Who was he talking to when he was by himself?

Anyway, the screwy words create illicit images in my head, involving eavesdropping on another couple and wanting to be involved in what's going on next door. Those images don't hurt though. They enhance it. Gives it an air of mystery and a sense of the forbidden.

I love it, but I still just laugh every time.

And, then there's the immortal:

" Well, I went today
Maybe I will go again tomorrow
Yeah, yeah, well, the music there
Well, it was hauntingly familiar"

"Well, I see you doing
What I try to do for me"

It is awesome in its clunkiness, as most of her songs are. Two more:

"Nobody knows, knows nothing 'bout it"

"No explanations and I tell you no
You say nothing"

.

Early in the writing process Stand Back was actually called "Stranded" which kind of makes the lyric make more sense, to me anyway:

Stranded in the middle of my room
I did not hear from you

Why the word was changed is anyone's guess but I always figured that if you pronounced the word 'stranded" with that same break it would fall between the syllables and it would sound like "stran-ded" with the emphasis on the second syllable so the "-ded" would stick out and sound like she was saying "dead"..... if you make it "stand-back" it doesn't have the same jarring effect of the "dead" syllable.

I should add that one thing I've always found most curious about this song is she wrote it on her honeymoon.. She has said she and Kim were driving to Big Sur for their honeymoon and she heard Prince on the radio and was all "I HAVE to get this song" and they went driving around to find somewhere to get a copy of the song and a tape recorder and then she stayed up all night writing the song. Omen for the rest of the marriage.....

Actually the information is recent to me as well. I actually read it here but I don't know exactly where. It was an interview in which the writer discusses the books on the shelves behind her. I'm not specifically meaning the type of Kabbalah that is currently popular. Hermetic Qabbalah has been popular in the music industry for more than 40 yrs. Plus, she had significant exposure to a large number of Jews within the music industry as a whole. In fact, she lived with one for years. I do not see it as an oddity that she would study either Qabbalah or Kabbalah.

I study Kabbalah myself. I enjoy it very much.

"Stevie Nicks lives in a large, extremely beautiful house built in the 1930s in the American colonial style, situated in the hills behind Santa Monica. She is in a meeting when I arrive, and I am shown into the library - a wood-panelled room, the walls hung with pre-Raphaelite miniatures and tapestries. On the bookshelves are volumes about the Kabbalah, Madame Blavatsky and Arthurian legend; a copy of The Johns Hopkins Consumer Guide to Drugs sits beside Luxury Hotels of the World"

I'm surprised how many of the lyrics mentioned are ones I like or find totally innocuous. Different strokes...

Two that always land with a thud for me:

The latter kind of kills "Italian Summer" for me. Show us, Stevie! Don't tell us.

I hear this whole song as a dialogue: (the him/her could be reversed, who knows!)

Him: Do you know what this is?

Her: No I don't. But whatever it is, it's very powerful.

Him: Have you felt this way before?

Her: Ohh, I thought I knew.

HIm: Do you know that I love you now?

Her: Oh yes I do.

(and because I can't resist):
Him: You know that I cannot stay

Him: Do not call or come around here, do not tell

I miss Tiffany's site, too. The lyric allusions were the best part of it. I believe most of the content for that section came from Lisa's (Dark Angel) research.

"Kick It," which mitzo mentioned, is my favorite song from Street Angel. As some have mentioned, many of those words are from Wilde's short story "The Happy Prince."

I bet you wouldn't say that to Robert Burns! ;)

It's like saying red, red rose. We know it's red the first time it's described, but when it's repeated then we know it's really, really red. Putting a comma separates the adjectives.

Your first, initial feeling.

Yes, that was me. :wavey: I started the research in 2001 after TISL came out. All of the allusions can be found at my Stevie site: www.inspiredangel.com

Ha-ha! These made me laugh especially "she refused to wear her coat." So mundane yet so priceless.

I still think all of "Silver Girl" is absolute banality. I've also always thought that the line "don't hide behind your hair that way baby" was pretty hilarious, especially taken out of context!

this may have been mentioned before but the one I thought of first was from Alice - "some carry a stiletto in their garter...along with everything else...that they carry". Awful!!

What about:

"She's a c'mon lady, she's a tarnished pearl"? I love the song but really.

oh I think this is one of her best, most confessional bits ever.

"To fill the empty spaces she's feeling
She depends on her music like a husband
And she knows it's no good
To fall in love again"

^ Yes, I think that's a superb way of illustrating with a lyric what Stevie has said in so many interviews.

^ If you took any random lyric out of context like you're doing it would sound wierd. Too bad the Rosetta stone doesn't have an option to learn how to speak metaphorically ;)

"sometimes it was heavenly, sometimes it was too heavy"

It's the use of "heavy" at which I take umbradge. Such a 70's use of the word.

LOL.

There sure isn't anything metaphorical about that line. Nor about "I walk though the halls of the hospitals I am a soldier's nurse."

Of course that's metaphorical. She's not ACTUALLY a nurse in a hospital.

If I said, "I bag up all my feelings, I'm the grocer of my pain" that would be a terrible, terrible line, yes.. but it would still be metaphorical.

The only metaphorical all part is the nurse bit, and it is both a clunky metaphor and a terrible line. Meanwhile, she certainly was not playing with metaphor when she claimed, in the same song, that she remembered "going out to dances."

I agree. I will defend "it hurts my everything," but "too heavy" makes me cringe.

I don't really have a favourite lyric or "CLUNK" so to speak but here are a few of my favourites:

Thunder only happens when it's raining

When the rain washes you clean you'll know, you'll know

I'm doing the best that I can, and I'm trying hard to change. I'm doing it the best that I can

And the summer became the fall, I was not ready for the winter. It makes no difference at all, 'cause I wear boots all summer long

Lightning strikes, maybe once, maybe twice

So you run towards what you know is wrong. There are too many flowers to cut down

The dream was never over, the dream has just begun
The dream was never over, no. The dream was only lost

This could be a whole lotta trouble for you

My destiny says that I'm destined to fall

Learn to be a stranger

I hear theres trouble in Shangri-La

Sometimes it's a bitch, sometimes it's a breeze. Sometimes loves blind, sometimes it sees. Sometimes it's roses, sometimes it's weeds. Somtimes its a bitch, sometimes it's a breeze

She's actually listing of her three favorites movies/shows, Beauty And The Beast, Phantom Of The Opera, and Dark Shadows.

Speaking of BATB, I always liked how she uses all three forms of the word "to" in one line, "Two children too blind to see".

Nice catch! I never noticed that before.

The Highwayman - Almost the whole song; TOO MANY "he's", "she's" and, "and's".It's exhausting!

"And if I was a child
And the child was enough
Enough for me to love"
This one has always bugged me. Is she talking about self-acceptance? Sounds like it.

"Sometimes the real colour of my skin
My eyes without any shadow"
This one bugs me too.Is she stating an obvious fact or, is she saying that she has dark circles under her eyes from exhaustion? Because she basicly already said that in the previous line "Some circles around my eyes".*scratches head*
Also; I think there should be an "are" in there before "my".

I'm going to agree with Soldiers Angel, also. She inserts Camelot in there and it throws the whole song out of whack for me.

"All of the trauma
The smell of Nag Champra"
First; It's Champa. No 'R' (as far as I know). Second; I know she has said that she likes to burn that particular incense, so it makes sense that she put that in the lyrics. She's remembering what was going on with her at that particular time. It's understandable. But the word... Nag Champra... it doesn't flow with the rest of the lyrics.

well we can't blame her for the lyrics to Sometimes It's A Bitch; that'll be all Jon BonJovi's fault.

I always thought the "same circles around my eyes" referred back to her eye makeup.. She talked about how she does her eyes, and how she discovered that her favorite old-school actresses like Dietrich and Garbo and such did their make up the same way, a big dark sweeping circle from around the top of the eye to under the eye. ( You can see this effect really well on a number of recent photos)....

"Eye make up dark, and it's careless
Same circles around my eyes..."

The part that bugs me is the part that comes next:
"Sometimes the real color of my skeeeyun
My eyes without any shadow"

uh, well, if there's no (eye) shadow on your eyes, then yeah, that would reveal the real color of your skeeyun...
but who knows what she's really talking about.

I've always felt this part was meant to be symbolic and go along with "I wear boots all summer long" and "pulls back the net and it's hard to see her face" in the idea that Stevie is always putting on a mask and hiding who she really is/how she really feels. Whether it is always wearing make up, or always wearing boots, or making it seem like everything was okay when Robin died, only a few people are allowed to see behind her curtain.

At the risk of sounding like an obsessed fan, I have to say there are very few lines of Stevie's that I dislike. What I always liked about her lyrics is the imagery they create. She was once asked what the line "wild in the darkest places of your mind" meant, what was she referring to. She started to answer and then said "my fans know exactly what I'm talking about". She couldn't be more right. Sometimes the line taken out of context seems odd, but within the structure of the song it usually paints the bigger picture.

Sometimes she's an actress, but you'll never really know...;)
