Muse
Within Temptation
Train
Staind
Papa Roach
Fallout Boy
Good Charlotte
Evanescence
Placebo
Puddle of Mudd

For me:
ABBA
 Abba are my favourite group, after the Mac!! :(
For me, it's got to be Rhianna. I cannot stand her. Her voice, her songs, her attitude - all of it sucks big time. She's also everywhere all the time...GO AWAY, woman!! She seriously makes me want to scratch off my own ears to avoid listening to her.
I also really strongly dislike Taylor Swift and Lana Del Ray. The latter of which has to be one of the dullest, fakest people on the face of the planet. And her entire album sounds like one, long, monotone song from start to finish.
I really cannot abide N Dubz or Tulisa either, but I don't think they're very well known outside the UK.
A few controvertial ones: The Smiths, Coldplay, Madonna post-Ray of Light, Marilyn Manson, Lifehouse

Blondie
Bjork
Bjork is a genuius. I also love Blondie. 2 artists listed there that I can't imagine my life without. Weird how we're all brought together by 1 band, yet our tastes outside of that vary so dramatically.

I don't like threads like this, because no one likes to see their favorite bands put on someone elses **** list.
That said, I cannot stand Bjork. Aside from any kind of scream-metal (hate it), she's the one artist - the one singer - the one musical presence that makes me want to claw my own face off.
So, other than Bjork and any kind of scream-metal, I can find good, redeeming qualities in any music from any artist.

Will as most of you know .I will make it easy.
Any music produced plus artists in the last 23 years stinks.Except a few good artists.
As they say the industry is dying .Will start producing good music instead of this mindless sheet.Maybe they will sell more music instead of the freeloaders downloading the sheet for free because its not worth the dime.

People illegally download just as much "good" music as they do "bad" music.
And the overarching issue is that there is no inherently good or bad music.
They music industry makes what sells. What sells right now is autotuned, generic dance-pop, and then a few slightly less unoriginal popular artists like Lana Del Rey and Adele. And folk stuff, like Mumford & Sons (which I find terrible despite liking folk music but that's just me) is also starting to get bigger in the mainstream..

This just isn't true. I'm 40, and some of the best music I've heard in my life is from the last 15 years. It all depends on what you're exposed to. There are plenty of artists making great rock and roll and pop music that isn't autotuned, that isnt crafted by teams of writers, that is singer/songwriter quality material. You just aren't hearing it because it's not what is *popular* right now.
If you really want new music, from new artists, that isn't that Katy Perry/Bieber crap, there's plenty of it out there. You may not have the same tastes I do, but check out The Black Keys, Alabama Shakes, Silversun Pickups, Kasabian, James Morrison, Ray LaMontagne , Amos Lee - you'll never find great newer artists if you don't give them a chance, and you're *not* going to hear them on the radio or MTV.

There's TONS of great music being produced if you care to look. I'm sorry but the blanket statement that no good music is being made is flat out BS.
Mick
Well, in general, I really don't like the "new" or "modern" music, especially those excessively promoted bands or singers (except for Adele). You know who they are...
- I like some girls like Katy Perry, Lana del Rey and Marina (& the Diamonds) but not for their music. They're so beautiful!!!
- There's some bands with one song I like, but only one. Like U2 with Miss Zarajevo, or Coldplay with Trouble...but nothing else...
- Madonna was so good before the end of the 90s. Now I really don't like her.
- There's some artists from all time that bore me. I don't remember them all, but the list is long.
- And, please, don't kill me, but let me include Beatles and Rolling Stones, and this is the first time I say it. I only like two or three songs from each (Free as a bird and Real Love // I can't get no satisfaction, Start me up and Everybody seen my baby). I respect them, but they're not my inspirations. :sorry:
Mark.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, but if someone isn't sure where to look, it can seem like top 40 radio is all that's out there.
The radio makes me crazy - seems like the same 15 songs over and over all day.
Classic rock stations are just as bad - it's the same 45-60 songs over and over and over.

A number of music critics/journalists were incorporating the term "monoculture" more and more into music writing in last year. "Monoculture" was when people could reasonably expect to be exposed to the same pop culture because everything came through the same media outlets. Monoculture has been shrinking.. Nowadays you can customize your pop culture experience so that you block out Music Genres XYZ or movie actors ABC, etc, and all that's left in the mainstream is, to be blunt, the lowest common denominator. To find anything else you have to go out and seek the niches because it won't come to you as easily. You have to know where to look.
Not that I hate everything mainstream, but it can all start to sound the same which diminishes the whole experience for me. It's usually not a problem for me because I either listen to music online or on public radio, which has a good mix of music, but I have to avoid a lot of top 40 radio to be able to enjoy it (rather than getting sick of it), which says something a little sad.
That said I don't think there is no good music these days, not even close. There's so much music out there that it's hard to keep up, IMO, especially without radio and MTV operating in a way that'd help me.

Sorry Its not like the old days.
I'd have to disagree with you, in part, but not completely.
The main difference I see between now, and say, 1970-1985, is that back then almost everybody could get a fair shot at radio play. DJs picked their sets, and had a lot of control over what they played.
These days, an artist doesn't get airtime unless thier label provides incentives or kickbacks to the radio monopoly. The DJ can't play songs that are not on the approved corporate playlist.
The heart and humanity has gone out of radio, and the deep cuts and 99.9% of the music released in the U.S . & Europe went with it.
When you stop to consider that, in 2010 for example, over 75,000 albums were released in the United States alone. Only 1,215 of them sold over 10,000 copies. Of those 1,215 that sold over 10,000 copies, you probably only heard material from 30-50 of them on the radio. That's only six-one-hundredths of a percent, so you can extrapolate that 99.93% of the music released in the United States each year gets no radio airtime.

May I suggest that you create a last fm page to find new stuff. Its free if you live in the states, UK, or Germany. Rate Your Music is also a good site.

See, I too am stuck in the 70's-mid 90's time lapse, and I am not ashamed to admit it.
When I was younger, I would buy tapes/CDs almost every week of different genres and knew every artist, what song they sang and knew most of the lyrics. The music industry is not that appealing to me anymore. Call it age, but I am only in my mid 30's and I love bands that were popular when I was born! (Heart, Eagles, Mamas & Papas, B52's, yes even ABBA!) I was born after my time; I am an old soul.
I don't listen to the radio and can't keep up with current rock/pop acts like I used to. Call it old age or short attention span, there are just too many that sound alike. I agree w/ Macfanforever, too much blah BS with some of the really good talents today.
However, I do like the song "Pricetag" and "Falling to Pieces" (they are not even new songs lol) featured on the Voice 1 or 2 yrs ago. Help me out, who are these artists?
that song "The Only Exception" by Paramore? and that other slow song released around the same time....comes to mind Mazzy Star, but I know that's not right, lol.
I also like some of the Killers, Maroon 5, a UK band Noisettes.
Just wanted to add, whoever writes for Katy Perry is excellent in the pop music making genre. And although I don't care for her over the top demand for attention "look at me now" attitude, Gaga is very talented in writing and her musical (piano, etc) ability. This doesn't mean I will ever buy their records or downloads, but they don't deserve half the crap that Bieber and Minaj get, or should receive.
To ChiliD that says "No" to the Smiths and Cure, I say shame :D
They are legends
and back on topic, I really don't like fun, I can't stand Black Eyed Peas, and that Toto/Jungle band...wait is that fun? I really don't know...and don't care to.

Those of you on here think I condemn all of today's music.I say no.
As long its not noise plus it makes sense with the lyrics .
Its not like 1976 when you turn on the radio and hear 10 current great top 40 tunes in a hour that you like in a row.Even then they were crap pop/rock tunes you wish will go away.
I just notice that some of you are on the same page that I am on some of music that I mentioned.

I haven't bought a new CD in ions. IYD was my last store bought purchase.I never thought I'd say this but I want to buy Taylor Swift's latest CD.
That's so funny - me too! :o
"Begin again" is simply and by far the most beautiful new song I have heard in months.
I would have never thought, too, that I would be considering buying a Taylor Swift record. ;)
Stevie likes her, by the way! :D

Ditto here .Me too.IYD was the last CD I got when it was released.
Now I have to take out a loan to get FM's Rumours set.
I have not heard much of Taylor's new CD yet but I will check it out soon.I always like her stuff even with a edge.
I refuse to buy MP3 file music from Icrap and Amazon.I rather like to have the CD in my hands. But the way things are going .The CD's probably will be history like VHS,Vinyl and cassettes.
I wish they released IYD on vinyl.

- 99% of current pop/rock whatever-have-you. Which includes Ke$ha, Taylor Swift, etc.
I will however give Bieber some credit. He has some talent, although I don't actually listen to his music. I've only heard a few songs.
- Don't like screamo. Gets annoying fairly quickly.
- Half or most of those emo bands.
- Otep. The chick sucks.
- Of Monsters and Men.I am getting so sick and tired of hearing "Little Talks".And the way the chick sings gets on my nerves! And basicly any band that has singers that sound like that, I don't like. Sounds like a meowing cat. Ugh!
- Florence and the Machine. I want to like them but there's something about Flo's singing that puts me off.
- Tiesto
- Most hip-hop and rap today. It's gone downhill.

I agree that he is over rated like Madonna ,Cher, Elvis ,Beatles and its members . but I enjoy their music.
Stevie Wonder was over rated back in the 70's..He did not deserve all those awards at the time.O also like his tunes too.
I never like Janet's Jackson tunes they all sound the same ,I do like Latoya and she is the most good looking one in the family.

-Justin Timberlake
-Taylor Swift-something about her attitude puts me off.
-Any kind of rap that is mediocre and deals with shallow subjects.

I liked and respected Michael Jackson's music up to Thriller, liked a lot of other Jacksons music as well, just didn't respect them as people a lot of the time. But Stevie Wonder has always been a great person and creator, I feel we are so lucky to have had him in our world (and Smokey Robinson and James Brown as well).
Hate? Really stereotypical '90s-onward country-pop with the cowboy hat being kind of the only tip off that it's country. The stuff that seems like a computer with a formula cranked it out for a certain lowest-common-denominator demographic. How does that junk actually keep selling? They have their own ghetto stations and tv channels and hit artists you've never heard of before (kind of like the praise and worship 'christian store' ghetto). Those people who get booked for Nascar and football game appearances. Hate hate hate, go away (and take thirty years of female degrading gangsta rap with you please).
I hate that 'industry' stuff so much I don't want to remember never mind speak/type any of the names.
Rant mode ended.

^ I forgot to mention that I dislike modern country too.
It all sounds really whiny to me.
Personally I dig Johnny Cash's music and I love "Highwayman" from the Highwaymen. Despite what my mother says on how pop-country artists nowadays pour their emotions in their music, I believe that one of Cash's songs contains more emotion then most current country artists' entire discographies.

I agree.I love Johnny's music also his wife's too.
Speaking of whiny country music..Rascal Flatts fits into that category perfectly.
I cant stand them.
I'm so glad that I got involve enjoying country music in the 1970's when Johnny Cash and others were hot on the charts.
Today's country has to much LOUD electric guitar which sounds like noise to my ears.
If I want to hear Good loud electric guitar. It will be Lindsey or Waddy at a concert
in other then that .I dont want to hear anybody else.
I went to see Keith Urban couple years ago.I thought I was at a rock concert.I have to say he's great but I rather hear acoustic guitar in the music.

I grew up around all the old country music and even older from when it was country & western so I have loads of emotion tied up with Charley Pride to Roy Rogers. About the only old stuff I dislike is if there are too many George Jones or Tammy Whynette songs in a row (although I like their duets). I`m not sure why I hate the new so-called country as much as I do, something phony about it if that makes sense. I love Alison Krauss and Raul Malo, but not sure if they are even considered `country`now. They were at one time. Somewhere after Dwight Yoakam and Rodney Crowell things went very bland. The guitar is generic `70s arena rock style, by the numbers mostly. They need to listen to some `50s rockabilly like Carl Perkins and Gene Vincent who always had killer twanging, or at least Johnny Cash, Ricky Nelson and Elvis (Luther Perkins, James Burton & Scotty Moore). Or Don Rich in Buck Owens band, that`s what they need to rediscover. Johnny Cash and Willy Nelson never had to wear a cowboy hat to be real country.
I was dragged into a U.S. native run casino one time and they had new country on the PA system... I literally had to leave and read in the car because of that, not from my disinterest in gambling.

Yes I see. There is no separation any more.
I listen to the Grand Ole Opry weekly online or the radio if the signal is good on 650 WSM Nashville.I'm glad that some of the older artist still show up and greet the fans with their classic tunes and still able to sing at their age and still call the Opry home.
That was strange that a casino was playing all country music .The only one I can think of playing country music is in Atlantic City which is called Bally's Wild West casino. The others here in Connecticut and Atlantic City play a mix of the currents with some older tunes.
Once in the blue moon I would hear a Stevie/FM tune at the casinos.
You will like this internet radio station. They play a mix of classic country from the 1950's to a handful of the 1990's tunes.I listen to it all the time.

Hoo. Well this is a "Can of Worms" opener for me, as there are quite a lot of artists I wouldn't grieve for should I wake up in the morning to find their entire back catalogues wiped off of the face of the earth. But as I have neither the time nor the will to list them all, I shall name but a couple.
Alanis Morissette - Good when I was 14. But not only did I play her music to death, but I came to the slow realisation that a lot of her 'Pro-feminist', 21st Century message was pure bull****. You've only to look deeper into her lyrics to realise that she is hypocritical. But maybe I'm being too harsh. Meh. Don't care.
The Carpenters - If there is one thing I cannot stand it's sickly sweet, overly honeyed music. If there is any song worse than "Why Do Birds Suddenly Appear" (Or whatever the hell it's called), I don't want to hear it because I fear the toothache may actually kill me. The only reason I don't name The Osmonds is Crazy Horses. Their songs are equally disgusting, but that song at least added a little hair to the proverbial balls of their back catalogue.
Genesis - Sad thing is, I may actually like their music if they weren't fronted/lyrically aided by a nasty, whining, simpering little troll by the name of Phil.
"Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being who went on to create a poor quality rock album. This made the Lord sad and he went on to create a planet of kittens and forgot all about us."
Morrissey - Not only are his songs very VERY depressing (Or as my Dad likes to refer to it, 'Music to slit your wrists too') but he himself as a vile bully. Yes, he has opinions and beliefs he feels strongly about. But there is no need to be so pushy about it. And to cancel entire concerts just because you can smell meat? Way to repay your fan, M!

The Carpenters are sooo...sad!! You can't deny the sweet voice and blah blah, but God, their music was so blue!!!
And with Genesis, yes, it's right, but not at all.
You can't deny that even in the Collins days you have some "rock" songs like Home By The Sea (and the Second), No Son of Mine and Abacab, and maybe one or two more. But in the Gabriel days you had very very long songs, and the voice of Peter changing all the time. Anyway, there's lot of good tracks of this 70s era, maybe their best works.
Phil changed everything and, even when I confess that songs like I Can't Dance, Paperlate, Illegal Alien and others are simply rubbish, you really don't know what was called "rock" and what was "pop" in the 80s. Pop was rock and rock was pop.
And, I don't believe that the Ray Wilson years were better!
Mark.

A person'd have to be a fool to argue with 'hairy balls', but Donny Osmond as a little kid croaking out Puppy Love has to be one of the very lowest points of hit pop music.
Roxette (Joyride), Loverboy (Turn Me Loose, The Kid Is Hot Tonight), Jefferson Starship (We Built This City), Pointer Sisters (I'm So Excited, Jump), Van Halen (Jump) and Bon Jovi (Living On A Prayer) have lyrics so generic and bland as to be entirely pointless and even intelligence insulting.
