Didn't see this thread! Started a thread about the band some time ago. I adore them, they are currently my favorite band.
I met them 2 nights ago, and had a chat about Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac with Este, the bass player, because i was wearing my Rumours shirt at their show.
She said she adored Stevie, wanted to see Fleetwood Mac live but didn't have the time because of their tour. It was a great, great moment.
They played "Oh well", of course, and it was completely crazy. Their cover rocks.

Their new single this year is pretty wonderful. Very TITN-era i think(?)

I love Haim! They can play, and they're not hiding behind any studio glitz--a great live band! I'm really excited for their debut album. Danielle's voice/rhythmic lyrics + Este's bass = perfection.

Really cool to see that you know them. Yes, that's the winning combo definitely. Also, Dash Hutton is a skilled drummer. I love how their songs are so different when played live. They are mostly a pop band, but live, they are absolutely a rock band. Did you have the chance to see them play? I recommend it.

Not much new artists and groups that I like today but I like Haim. They sound great probably because of the mix of R&B/ folk/country sound of their music...I like to see them do a whole album of FM tunes.

Stevie and FM is mentioned in their Wiki Bio.

I don't think that will happen since they already have so many songs (like, 9 songs), plus hopefully some new ones...there's no space for that. But it would have been a good idea!

I'm really happy that people are starting to appreciate their music. They do take the best from the Rn'B and Rock n' Roll worlds. They are also pretty charismatic (comes probably from the fact that they are sisters). They are already big in the UK, not sure about the US though?

I haven't had the chance to see them play yet, but I definitely plan on it. They're not big in the U.S. yet, but I kind of don't want them to be, because that hasn't lead any bands I've liked in good directions lately... I just hope they aren't pushed into the pop mainstream and that they stay true to their own style and tastes. They are already great, but they have so much potential too! Any word on an album release date? I heard it's this summer sometime...

We won't have an album until September :/.
Well i think they are already pretty much pop, like indie/pop, but i want their live shows to stay as rock n' roll. The problem is that they are starting to include pop in live performances, for example "Falling".
Here is the original live version of "Falling", without the outro and with an extra verse :

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/0ovrplcNwXo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And now (more synths, outro) :

I preferred the original :(

Good point. I suppose pop is alright, because quality pop is respectable, but I just want them to maintain creative control and avoid overproduction. I also agree with the live shows staying rock and roll, because I HATE when all these new bands (even bands that call themselves rock bands) seem like they choreograph stage moves or move like robots instead of naturally responding to the music and their instruments.

Hey, if "pop music" means "popular music", it can be anything. And, to me, it's all about the melody, that's what matters. So of course i'm not blaming them for being "pop". Pop/indie, whatever. They even include elements of rn'b in their music, as it was mentioned before.
However i think most of their songs are already overproduced, i'm kind of scared to hear what will happen to my beloved "The wire" and "Honey and i", those are just so classic rock. Some songs need heavy production, some just don't...
Haha, do you have examples? What other new bands do you like?

Este was perfect..I just feel like not that many groups can make an impression like that and remain themselves. But they killed it.

So great to hear you met and spoke to them..over various social media and actually texting Este I've been hoping to meet up with them in Chicago. They're playing a festival in August and are always down to party! Haha hope I can run into them!

What's your twitter, please? :). I've never had the guts to text Este, and also it's kind of expensive to text her from here!
They are sweethearts (especially Danielle, i just adore her and she was so nice with me), i'm sure you'll be able to talk to them. We had actual conversations, even with my sucky English (because i was stressed haha). So it will happen. just text her :).

One of my bands that was "ruined" by overproduction and the shift to the mainstream was Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. They lost so much of their authenticity and stage presence when they turned to Auerbach or whatever his name is from the Black Keys to produce their 2012 album.

Other bands I like have stayed away from the big label pressures and tried to stay true to themselves and make cohesive albums: Caitlin Rose, Vanessa Carlton (well, only Rabbits on the Run), Joss Stone, Bonnie Raitt. They wouldn't allow themselves to be molded into "what sells" in this day and age, because then their music would lose a lot of its honesty.

I've never listened to Grace Potter actually but will definitely, but the stuff before that producer came in.
I love how you consider Bonnie Raitt to be a "new artist" lol. She's great though. I really liked her last album, she still has it. There's a song called "God only knows" i love it.
Joss Stone is excellent, Caitlin Rose covers a lot of Fleetwood Mac songs and does it well.

Haha yeah, I realize Bonnie Raitt isn't a new artist, but I do admire how she never caved to record company pressure- sure, she sold a respectable amount, but never really broke through to mass popularity until Nick of Time. "God Only Knows" is beautiful, though! I also love her recent Dylan cover "Standing in the Doorway," also from Slipstream, an outstanding album. Which other albums of hers do you like? I was shocked by the crappy revuew Rolling Stone gave Joss Stone's latest album, Soul Sessions 2, saying she "steamrolled" all the songs. Maybe people just aren't used to such a powerful voice. Caitlin Rose's voice is good already, and I think it has a lot of room to mature, and it will only get better as she gains more experience. As for Grace Potter, I highly recommend the albums "This is Somewhere" and "Nothing But the Water."

It's honestly refreshing to hear they are in fact personable and gracious. It's always a little disappointing to hear about a bad encounter. Really hoping to actually meet them now!

I had legit conversations over twitter (@brittkeating) and surprisingly a long conversation texting as well. My friend was over and we decided to just try it..not thinking it was the right number or that we would get a response. But Este was great! And seriously seemed like she wants to try to have a dance party and hang after their show. I'm down. Lol.

Never seen anyone as outgoing as Este. But she's also really smart and has great taste. I also preferred Slipstream to Nick of Time, but I don't see that as so unusual. To me, Nick of Time seemed to be a turning point between blues rock Bonnie and glossy adult rock Bonnie, and I much prefer the blues and rock n' roll. Sure, Nick of Time was able to capture a wider audience than her previous albums (because it had more of an "easy listening" feel), but I feel that most of her previous albums, and especially Sweet Forgiveness and Give it Up, were better than Nick of Time. In a way, Slipstream represents another shift in production and song choice.

Joss's latest album, Soul Sessions 2, is very different from 2011's LP1, which was produced by Dave Stewart. Surprisingly, Stewart took a "hands off" approach with LP1, which let Joss's voice shine. Although I also love Soul Sessions 2, her voice seems to be competing with the abundance of instrumental layers, and I think a little less decadence would have made for a slightly more rewarding and atmospheric album. That being said, the albums do show two very different sides of Joss's vocals, which represented her growth as an artist.

Great! I'll follow you back! Trust me, I'll keep you updated if I end up meeting them early August!

Just my add in..really liked most of Slipstream. Different from the classic Nick of Time w which definitely gave her a lot of critical acclaim and an audience base. Grace Potter is one of my favorites..brief rundown of albums:

This Is Somewhere- Early trying to find their sound. Some great tracks, but not a huge breakout.

Nothing But the Water- one of my faves. Literally could have been a Bonnie Raitt album.

Grace Potter- pop mainstream..a few good tracks (Medicine!) but Grace lost sight of her voice and admits it was a break from where the band should have kept to their identity.

Lion, Beast, Beat- really great, produced by Black Keys member so a few tracks are still a bit too pop mainstream. And I love the Black Keys.. Check out The Divide. My top Grace track!

Update : Album out 30th September but leaked last night. I listened to 3 songs. They are AMAZING. One sounds like Bella Donna Stevie mixed with "Running up that hill", and another sounds like classic Tango-era Mac with a rn'b vibe (it's the title track, "Days are gone"). You can find the link pretty easily on the internet and various tumblrs.

To those who went to see them during their summer tour, how was it??
I'm going to the Itunes festival in London to see them next week :))

So, opinions on Days are gone?

On the second and fourth "now you can't find it" in the song "Days are gone", it sounds exactly as if Lindsey Buckingham was singing. Please tell me i'm not crazy.

I love the album. It's been on repeat for me for weeks. My favorite tracks are: Falling, Forever, The Wire, If I Could Change Your Mind, Honey & I, Don't Save Me, My Song 5, and Let Me Go.

Clearly that is a hefty majority of the album haha.. and I like the other tracks I didn't mention, too. There's not a bad song on there IMO. Overall I find it really solid and cohesive, while at the same time having a lot of variation. I'm a big fan of a lot of the 80s-ish production elements. And of Danielle's vocal/lyrical style.

I can sorta hear what you're talking about - there's some sort of a pitch modulation (or it might be the use of a vocoder, idk) done that is making it sound like a guy, haha. It doesn't sound like Lindsey in particular to me though. Although quite a few times I could swear Christine laid some vocals down on their tracks.

Did you know them before the album came out? I really hate "The wire" on the album, it was such a cool Fleetwood Mac-y song before, a real rocker. Now it's just pure pop and i hate the strings at the end of the song.
I am very glad you like "My song 5", because you say you like 80s music but "My song 5" is a completely different experience musically. I wonder why it's called "My song 5". Some people say it's because there are 5 songs in 1. I think they were just too lazy to give it a proper name.
You like them lyrically? I thought it was their main weakness but their songwriting is very effective, and some songs like "Go slow", "Days are gone", "Running if you call my name" and "Don't save me" are beautifully written.
Oh, yeah you're right. I'm crazy.

I think my dreams will come true when Stevie will start listening to Haim instead of Katy Perry.

I Like pop music so I don't really mind the way it came out on the album.

My song 5 is really dubsteppy and it's got a cool melody.

Well, I more so meant her phrasing and such then the actual content of the lyrics themselves. Im I bothered by the lyrics one way or another - they go well with the music and nothing sticks out to me as being cringe worthy or anything.

I'm one of the oldsters on here but I think this is a very well done album.I bought it after hearing their cover of "Hold Me"These girls seem to have a gift for coming up with inventive hooks on one song after another a very rare ability these days.If this album had been released anywhere from the late 1970s through the 1990s it would have sold millions..maybe even approaching Rumours level sales..not sure about now though.
