Not sure where the info came from, but NicksLive posted a photo on Facebook of Stevie and the Sound City band playing last night, with the caption that Stevie wrote the song about the death of her god son (I'm assuming this is Glen Parrish's son, who passed away last year, I believe).

I don't think it had been confirmed before, but it appears that this is a new Stevie tune, and not just a song that she happens to be singing on. Can't wait to hear it!

lol, i just said the same in the sound city thread. i read it in some Grohl interview from yesterday i think.

this was not the quote i originally saw, but here's another one:

Nicks wooed with a new song written with Grohl, "You Can't Fix This" – based on a poem she wrote after her godson’s overdose – and the Sundance-appropriate "snow covered hills" of "Landslide."

so i'd assume SN wrote the words and Grohl wrote the music.

I may have heard this story before, but I have forgotten it. "You can't fix this" is a song Stevie wrote about the death of her godson. I guess he had an overdose. Who is it? I forget. Someone fill me in.

Nicks premiered "You Can't Fix This," written, she said, after her godson died from alcohol poisoning after a fraternity hazing.

hmmm... so that is what happened. How very sad.

Apparently he wasn't in the fraternity, or even a student at the university:

I didn't realize he died a month before Stevie's Mother passed. I can kinda see now why Stevie has been making these comments about her own mortality & not wanting to waste time. :distress:

I think it means driven by the limitations of her vocal range... as in, limited to a very narrow octave range. She's never been say, Ann Wilson or Pat Benatar in terms of her range, and she's even more limited now.

they also called it "stalwart" which is solid, dependable.... definitely doesn't mean edgy, new, unique... so the combo of "stalwart" and "octave-driven" to me sounded like it's a pretty solid, predictable , respectable piece of work but nothing earth-shattering. But, I guess we won't know til we can hear it.

My guess is they may have asked folks not to tape the new song since that is one of Stevie's big "computer's are evil" things - people hearing new songs via a youtube video before they are actually released.

I get Amazon's weekly MP3 Newsletter, and this week's edition listed "You Can't Fix This" (credited to "Dave Grohl, Stevie Nicks, and Others") under New Songs & EPs.

Unfortunately, however, clicking the link brings you to a "Document Not Found" page.

A manual search on Amazon reveals a January 29th release date, but with the notation that it's not currently available.

So... maybe soon?

music reminds me of Illume. so i take back my speculation that Grohl wrote the music for this. i think SN wrote lyrics and music and all these co-authors did just the arrangement. to me this song sounds very much like many of her songs on SYW.

As far as her sounding "nasally", I suppose she does now compared to her younger years, but I guess I'm used to it? Regardless, I think she sounds great. At least she doesn't just yell all her songs now like Lindsey seems to do.

 yeah, i'm sure we are all biased more or less towards whoever our favorite is.

although must say i was really disappointed with the song and her singing and completely shocked when Grohl then commented how great she sang it?! of course everything he recorded for that real to reel was "amazing" and "f'in great" to him -man's gotta self-advertise i guess

speaking of not hearing how bad stuff sounds, i was also shocked that Lindsey let out that GYOW demo - man, does he sound flat there! if i were him i'd never let that out... he must really not care much what gets out these days since he said they all had to listen to and ok those releases.

re Lindsey shouting - again i was really really surprised starting from april 2011 in Saban on how great he has been singing and sounding. but of course you wouldn't know that if you don't follow what he does solo, or didn't hear his latest One Man Show live release.

I totally dig the music... it sounds like the Stevie of 30+ years ago before she got all addicted on sonic clutter. I'll have to hear the studio version before I can make a judgement call on her vocals, though.

It's such a shame this song will forever be buried in this obscure documentary soundtrack... it would have made such an awesome foundation for a solo album, or a very passionate Mac song!

Wow, this sounds like classic Fleetwood Mac. They did an amazing job with the arrangement.

I tried to make out the lyrics but there's part of the chorus that I just can't seem to grasp:

We don't talk much about it
It goes back so many years
All the times we almost didn't make it
We stayed clear

Dancing with the devil
Call it respect, call it fear
But we never allowed the devil
To come to the party

We were careful in our way
Walked through the darkness
We made a pact not to dance with the devil
Even when the devil seemed to have a heart

He said we'd never be sorry for what we'd done

But we never allowed the devil to come to the party

You can't fix this, you lost a friend
Hearts breaking right and left
_________________
And the devil pours another glass

It's so easy

The devil pours a glass of champagne
ASks someone new to dance
It's so easy to ruin peoples lives
He twirls around and starts to laugh

Tear up the invitation
Hear the bells ring on the hour
He twirls around and he laughs

You said we'd never be sorry for what we'd done
But we never allowed the devil to come to the party

You can't fix this, you lost a friend
Hearts breaking right and left
_________
And the devil pours another glass

No we never allowed the devil to come party
We said that we would never be sorry
For what we'd done

Never come to the party
If you think you won't come home

Never dance with the devil
He will burn you down
Never dance with the devil
He will burn you down
Never dance with the devil
He will burn you down

You can't fix this
You can't fix this

i don't know. my understanding is this documentary has already been picked up for distribution after just one festival showing (unlike IYD doc), granted that showing was at Sundance. do you really think SN solo project would get more exposure? i actually thought it was great advertising for all of them - BN, FM, and SN that their stories are such a big part of the movie.

i do agree with you that i'd prefer she gave that song to FM and add it to the 8 they already have to finish that album they've been working on and by all accounts she's been holding back.

but for her personally and her career, i think having it as a part of this sountrack was much better move. i'd probably do the same if i were her. i guess we'll have better idea one way or another soon, once the soundtrack is officially released.

Foo Fighters, Stevie Nicks, Slipknot and Nirvana members play Sound City gig - watch

The gig follows the LA premiere of Dave Grohl's Sound City documentary
[excerpt below]

Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks was the final guest musician, performing 'Stop Draggin' My Heart Around', with Grohl filling in Tom Petty's role. She sang new song 'You Can't Fix This', from the soundtrack, which she told the crowd was about her late 18-year-old godson, who last year died of an overdose at a frat party. "In our day, we made a pact not to dance with the devil," she explained before the track.

Nicks also sang Fleetwood Mac's 'Dreams' and 'Landslide'. The evening came to a close with a near-10 minute version of 'Rumours' track 'Gold Dust Woman' - watch footage of it below.

Yes, it seems to be just luck that they survived, because even if they didn't overdose, you can be especially reckless when you're high. It's a wonder none of them have been in major car crashes. Maybe they always had drivers.

But perhaps Glen's son tried something harder than she did, like heroin, for instance. She might think what she did was safer. Even today I can imagine her lecturing someone not to take Klonopin, but I don't know how adamant she would be that they not use cocaine. I don't think she'd encourage it, but I don't know if she considers it as dangerous, even now.

Well, Stevie stopped driving in what, '78? So yeah, maybe they were, as you say, careful about it all in their own way.

But it's not as if people intentionally overdose (I shouldn't say that - they DO, of course....but you know what I mean). Someone in FM/their circle easily could have taken one hit too many and gone into cardiac arrest in the coke days, I'm sure. Like you said, it was just luck that nothing that bad ever happened .

I remember from a few articles that it was thought to be prescription drugs and alcohol that he OD'd on.

Wow. That may be my favorite Stevie song of the decade. Too soon to judge but definitely her most intense. Usually her songs of such a sad nature are turned into ballads except for edge, but this song bites hard. It's darkness makes me think of straight back or sisters. And the last 2 minutes had me flashing back to the ends of Rhiannon in the 70s. I'll take a little nasally over a boring new song without a slight nasal.

And the music sounds just like the wall of sound thrown down. I couldn't put my finger on it at first but it just hit me.

Stevie may not have done heroin, but that's certainly not the only drug that can kill you.

I recall in Stevie's own Behind the Music Paul Fishkin flat out saying they literally had to "scrape her off the floor" during the worst part of her addiction, and stating that there were "near overdoses on the road". I really think luck had a big, big part in why she never died from drugs. The "devil" was certainly trying....

Stevie often says that cocaine didn't impair her creativity but Klonopin did. I'd beg to differ.... some of her material during the coke years, especially as it progressed, became sloppy, unfocused, embarassingly narcissistic at times and her voice got worse. The hyperactivity from coke may make you able to crank out a lotta stuff, but a large percentage of that often isn't very good.

IMO, Stevie absolutely danced with the devil, even if she never took heroin.

"We don't talk much about it, it goes back so many years, all the times we almost didn't make it..." sounds to me like her godson's overdose really made her realize how close they all actually were. "We made a pact not to dance with the devil" seems like she is talking about how naive they were and that even tho they didn't do heroin they were still dancing with the devil. They thought cocaine was okay because it wasn't heroin and I'm sure Glen thought prescription drugs and alcohol were okay since they weren't cocaine. Glen didn't overdose on heroin and I just think this song is Stevie's blunt realization that if prescription drugs and alcohol could take him out, cocaine and Klonopin could have taken her out at any time. Of course we really need the whole song to jump to any conclusions, but that just my opinion.

IMO, Stevie absolutely danced with the devil, even if she never took heroin.

I think she thinks that the worst thing cocaine did was give her that hole in her nose.

As for prescription drugs, I think she knows they're deadly.

see to me her voice sounded amazing on that early version of Chain or Dreams. on this one her voice sounded almost as nasal as on her SYW songs.

Stevie's voice has taken on a grittier, deeper, more nasally tone... but I think, more often than not, it conveys the depth of her lyrics even better now than it did in the '70s. There's a resonance that's just so beautiful to my ears.

I would agree, you could definitely interpret it that way based just on the song lyrics... but right before the song starts she says: "In our day, we made a pact not to dance with the devil. We did a lot of other things but we never danced with the devil. Unfortunately, this little boy danced with the devil."

Which implies (or rather, pretty plainly states) that though they did a lot of sh*t, they never ____ [whatever 'dancing with the devil' means] and sadly the boy did and that's what caused his downfall. At least, that's how I would read that statement.

I just have to wonder what the distinction is between the two parties.

If Parrish, Sr. was testing Stevie's prescriptions for her, to make sure they were "safe" before she took them, then I'd say he danced with the devil.

But I guess even if you're a drug addict, you have more maturity than a hazing frat boy and are less likely to combine physical dares and risks with the substance consumption.

Having dealt with 2 heroin addicted siblings, my guess is that's what she means. The devil being death maybe.

Stevie Nicks Says Fleetwood Mac Never Became Heroin Junkies
10/18/07

Stevie Nicks says that although Fleetwood Mac was notorious for their drug use both on the road and in the studio, the band members all drew the line with heroin. Nicks told Britain's The Independent, "It was a party. Everyone was partying. It was dangerous, but it was fun. They were fantastic, tragic times... None of us ever did heroin. Right there, that's why we are alive. We were careful -- we didn't die. But we could have."

Nicks went on to say that new artists lack the support and structure of major record labels to become formidable live acts: "New artists can't do what we do -- they don't get the support from their record companies. We just stayed on the road. We've done it so long we could be half dead and still do a great show with one day of rehearsal."

Earlier this year, Nicks released a solo retrospective called Crystal Visions - The Very Best Of Stevie Nicks.

Last month Nicks was inducted into the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame at the Dodge Theatre in Phoenix.

Stevie Nicks will perform tomorrow night (October 19th) in Rosemont, Illinois at the Rosemont Theatre.

If I recall, Glen Jr had been in rehab at some point in his life. Perhaps he'd had a problem with heroin? And while that isn't what ultimately killed him, Stevie may have still made the connection between his tragic death and "dancing with the devil" (using heroin).

It's also possible that heroin caused his death and it just wasn't released to the public. The autopsy hadn't been performed yet when they were saying prescription drugs + booze, according to the article I found.

Don't want to speculate too much, of course. Just interested in the meaning behind the song. It's a very sad story all around.

She's talking about heroin. "Dancing with the devil" is using heroin. Stevie's always said that heroin was the one drug that was always off-limits. . . That's sort of what Stevie is saying in her intro and in the song ("never allowed the devil to come to the party").

The brutality of the subject is very evident in the complete construction of the song, especially Stevie's vocal--I can appreciate the song for that reason. . . I just can't say I particularly like it. Not a fan of Stevie's lower register these days.

Hmm.

I am assuming that Grohl wrote this music. If so, she needs to work with him more. I really like this snaky vibe. This is some of the best backing music she has had in ages. I like it better than much of IYD.

It starts out really strong, and I like the verses. The chorus is an odd kind of anti-chorus. From the music I was expecting some kind of crashing upswing then the melody goes flat. Not sure how I feel about that. It doesn't move. I like the ending, but ultimately my impression is that melody wise it doesn't deliver. And some of those words are clunky. The meter is all off. I keep expecting some clever or inventive "poetry" like wordplay and creativity and Stevie does not stretch much with that anymore. Not a lot of effort is expended with using unexpected words or allusion. Ah well.

I enjoyed it and am curious to hear the studio version.

Just ditch the FM tour. Take the Foo Fighters on the road as a backing band.
I wouldn't pay 50 bucks to see the Fleetwood Mac tour and I would pay 500 or more to see her tour with this backing band. I should have just driven the 15 minutes to see this last night and bought a scalper seat. Damn.

If this is what Dave Grohl does for her than screw Dave Stewart. Make the next solo record with this guy and this band.

Wow, this sounds like classic Fleetwood Mac. They did an amazing job with the arrangement.

I tried to make out the lyrics but there's part of the chorus that I just can't seem to grasp:

We don't talk much about it
It goes back so many years
All the times we almost didn't make it
We stayed clear

Dancing with the devil
Call it respect, call it fear
But we never allowed the devil
To come to the party

We were careful in our way
Walked through the darkness
We made a pact not to dance with the devil
Even when the devil seemed to have a heart

He said we'd never be sorry for what we'd done

But we never allowed the devil to come to the party

You can't fix this, you lost a friend
Hearts breaking right and left
_________________
And the devil pours another glass

It's so easy

The devil pours a glass of champagne
ASks someone new to dance
It's so easy to ruin peoples lives
He twirls around and starts to laugh

Tear up the invitation
Hear the bells ring on the hour
He twirls around and he laughs

You said we'd never be sorry for what we'd done
But we never allowed the devil to come to the party

You can't fix this, you lost a friend
Hearts breaking right and left
_________
And the devil pours another glass

No we never allowed the devil to come party
We said that we would never be sorry
For what we'd done

Never come to the party
If you think you won't come home

Never dance with the devil
He will burn you down
Never dance with the devil
He will burn you down
Never dance with the devil
He will burn you down

You can't fix this
You can't fix this

I heard the studio version of this twice today and I'm pretty sure the part you can't make out goes, "friends just break like glass" but I'd have to listen to it again because in the live version it sounds like she says, "friends SHOULDN'T break like THAT/GLASS" so we shall see.

It could also mean since Glen Jr. had been in rehab (more than once I think), that just going to that party was a dance with the devil for him, not disassociating with your old "friends" or allowing yourself to be in situations where your recovery is tested before you are ready.

Stevie is one of those artists that an arrangement can make or break a song's vibe. She seems to always do best with a less is more sound, in the vein of Storms than she does in songs with so much going on such as much of Rock a Little. This song sounds fantastic and the arrangement is exactly what makes Stevie appealing. (to me anyways).

It sounds to me like Dave & Co were intentionally channeling Fleetwood Mac when they did the arrangement - all of the meandering parts, the floating keys, everything. It certainly doesn't sound like a typical Foo Fighters song.

I loved this from the second I heard the music start(2 days ago). It is hard for me to hear the vocal but that will change once we get the released version. I'm guessing Dave Grohl wrote the music. It sure doesn't sound like anything she could have created.

I like the sparsity of the arrangement - more space has always suited Stevie's music best, and yet since the mid-80s her songs have gotten increasingly tight and cluttered. This song sounds great to me. I think the lyrics, as someone else put it above, are a little 'clunky' and could have benefited from some refinement to make them flow a little more naturally. But it's still a pretty killer song.

Dave's credited as a co-writer, but it's a typical Stevie chord progression. I think she easily could have created the backbone of it. Stevie wouldn't have written any of the instrumental parts anyway - she rarely does unless it's a piano riff that happens to stay around like Sara, Moonlight, etc. If she didn't come up with the basics, they did a damn good job of replicating her style.

All I hear are the Bella Donna & Wild Heart albums in this song... snippets of Stop Dragging My Heart around, a shade of Outside The Rain, a little I Will Run To You, and even some Sable On Blond. I will admit there's a bit of Straight Back type Mac sound in there somewhere, though. There's a definite early 80s vibe going on in the song... it hearkens back to the time when Stevie didn't hide behind sonic clutter, and there was "air" in her music. I totally dig it.

After hearing the song a few times now, I definitely think "dancing with the devil" is most likely a reference to heroin. It's definitely about hard core drug use/addiction, and getting sucked into that downward spiral. It really is a crying shame this song won't make either a Stevie solo or Fleetwood Mac album. I do know that the Foo Fighters are on hiatus for a while... maybe Mr Grohl should produce Stevie's next solo work! :D

Oh, yeah, most definitely. I guess I just kind of lump all of Stevie's good early 80s stuff together, whether it's FM or her solo work . It's definitely got shades of the Petty influence and the Bella Donna sound. But I get a lot of Straight Back / Gold Dust Woman vibes from this in general. The keys specifically remind me of Christine's playing on Rhiannon/Crystal. And I feel like the drummer had a very Mick-esque beat going.

I would be ecstatic if she used THIS Dave for her next solo album. He seems to hold her in really high regard and judging from this song and their interpretation of GDW, he "gets" her music.

I have to agree that the arrangement gives a lot of space in this song. That is what any great Stevie song needs. The problem for me is that she doesn't fill it with much.
The melody just lies there and doesn't do anything. That is a blue balls chorus.

I thought using heroin was called *Chasing the dragon*. This is from Wiki:

"Chasing the dragon" (a slang phrase of Cantonese origin from Hong Kong, Traditional Chinese: 追龍, Simplified Chinese: 追龙, Cantonese Jyutping: zeoi1 lung4, pinyin: zhuī lóng) refers to inhaling the vapor from heated morphine, heroin, oxycodone or opium that has been placed on a piece of foil. The 'chasing' occurs as the user gingerly keeps the liquid moving in order to keep it from coalescing into a single, unmanageable mass.[1] Another more metaphorical use of the term "chasing the dragon" refers to the elusive pursuit of the ultimate high in the usage of some particular drug.

I LOVED the classic Stevie wail at 5:11! I agree with paleshadow's comment about "friendships break like glass/then The Devil pours another glass/It's so easy" being so ominous. I would LOVE it if Fleetwood Mac would include this song in their setlist.

if you are downloading i personally prefer buying directly from the artist / sound city site. plus you won't have all stupid itunes related restrictions. you can get 3 or 4 different versions all available to you for that one price (including mobile version). someone said this all became available to them when they bought a movie ticket. i'm not sure since i both pre-ordered from grohl's site and bought movie ticket.

Piss-poor lyrics (again).

I do wonder what exactly happened to change Stevie's songwriting style so much since her early Fleetwood Mac days. Her songs used to be so mysteriously enigmatic, or as Lindsey said, written from the inside out. The great virtue of this was the fact they could be interpreted by the listener to mean almost anything. The songs could change meaning over time to the listener, and continue to unfold in layers. Some of Stevie's songwriting these days is definitely painfully straightforward to the point of being silly, dull, or just plain bad (what's faster than a fast car? :p ). That being said, she's still got better songwriting chops than the majority of current top 40 artists.

I wonder if that "change" just comes from writing about her relationship issues over and over again until there's just nothing "fresh" to write about. I mean even during IYD's interviews, she was pointing out each song - "that was about Lindsey," "that was about Lindsey, too."

well, there's nothing LITERAL about the "devil" pouring a "glass of champagne" and i still think her writing is fairly esoteric ... remember the DR argument over Throw Down? it seems like people SEEK things to criticize now... nothing we write here is going to CHANGE her writing style...i just don't see a VAST difference... esp regarding YCFT. it's a pretty opaque lyric.. unless she said, "it's about the death of my godson" no one could glean that from the lyric.

I've often thought that it was the continual criticism in rock music press over the years -- about Stevie's lyrics being "obtuse," "pseudo-mystical," and "becoming a caricature" -- that lead her to begin writing more straight-forward, literal songs.

The lyrics aren't as literal as something like SYW ( the song). The only problem is that the metaphor is already a cliche and Stevie often creates her own original ones. So that may make the lines a little disappointing .

I remember when Christine put Jacks of Heart, clowns and so many worn turns of phrase into a single song that my head almost exploded. Dancing with the devil may be just a bit trite, but I don't think it's bad.

The lyrics are bad because they don't rhyme. SYW was straightforward but it rhymed, that's why it was a good pop tune imo.
I mean :

"Dancing with the devil
Call it respect, call it fear
But we never allowed the devil
To come to the party

We were careful in our way
Walked through the darkness
We made a pact not to dance with the devil
Even when the devil seemed to have a heart"

Nothing rhymes ! Even "The nightmare" has more musicality to it than this. Also she definitely says "devil" too much. I do like some of the lines, and the music is fantastic, and i like the atmosphere of the song, so it's a B/B- song (if we're doing grades), to me.

Actually, that second stanza there does rhyme. It's just not your typical run-of-the-mill end rhyme. Heart rhymes with the first syllable of darkness. That was actually one of the better verses, to me.

It's not that the song as a whole is very literal - it's not. Obviously, the whole thing is pretty much a metaphor. It's just that the lines are very simple - they are no mystery in and of themselves.

All of the lines of a song don't necessarily have to rhyme... The problem is that sometimes they DO rhyme at a certain place, which makes it jarring when all of a sudden they don't. And the rhymes that are there are elementary... year-clear, glass-glass... I was actually expecting her to say "but we never allowed the devil to come near" after the "call it respect/call it fear" line. Seemed like it would have been the natural progression. Year/clear/fear/near.

That said... I love you Stevie. Music/vibe/sentiment/performance is all incredible, on the other hand. And I'm quite fond of the outro lyrics - there's an example of lyrics that don't rhyme and it's perfectly fine that they don't.

Well, it's kind of a rule (I know, I know, you wouldn't say that to Bob Dylan ) in writing that rhyming a word with itself kind of actually DOESN'T rhyme, in a weird way. It's like a double-negative or something.

I love Nightbird, but this part has always bugged me, too:

The winter is really here now
And the blankets that I love
Sometimes I am surrounded
By too much love

Reading it as prose it sounds fine, like she's emphasizing that there's too much love by using the word love more than once. But put it in a song and something about it just isn't quite right.

Again, I feel the need to reiterate... I love you Stevie

He's listed as a co-writer (I don't think anything has specified in what capacity, just that Nicks and Grohl and whoever else are the writers), so he could have. But the chord progression screams Stevie to me... If I had to guess, I would bet that she came up with the basic song structure and Dave & co wrote the arrangement.

I could be wrong. And if I am, then they did a damn good job of capturing & replicating Stevie's sound.

most likely and I don't want to continually bash this song. I've only listened to it twice but it remains in my head, which is a good thing. My main problem with the lyrics are the words themselves but their lack of flow, in spots. To me, her words sound clunky and ungraceful, at times, with the music. I think a few adjustments to the original poem may have served the song well.

But...I do like the song and I especially like the "It's so easy..." part in the middle. A new song from Stevie is always exciting to me, imperfections and all...:nod:

To all of the phrasing/wording conversations: I agree that I am a bit leery with certain words. There could be improvements FOR SURE. I don't know if I like 'party' especially since it's repeated a lot..

In the track, I hear bits of "Rhiannon," "Gold Dust Woman," and "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around." First off, the drums: heavy tom-toms, lots of counter beats, fills and bass drum kicks that set off the rest of the track; a deceptively simple bass track that steps up when it needs to; two layers of keyboards (including a very heavily Christine McVie inspired Hammond B3 organ); a very FM/SN combination of layered guitar hooks very suited to Stevie's voice. And despite the subject matter, I think this track is one of the sexiest she's done in YEARS. And the sultry vibe does coincide with the "dance with the devil" metaphors. Also, I couldn't care less about the rhyming or how the chorus doesn't have a conventional resolution. I love how the tension hangs in the air until she utters, "You Can't Fix This." And then all the hooks converge and start banging away again. In many ways, this song is a one-off, but it's still very good, and IMHO her "sexiest" in years. And by no means do I mean to belittle the subject matter. "The Devil" knows a good beat when he's got one.

Also, I get no Fleetwood Mac vibe from this, and after listening to it a couple of times, I get the feeling that this song would have never seen the light of day without Dave Grohl. Makes me think she should do 'Space Needle' with the Sound City Players.

Wow..you know your stuff! Space Needle is an inspired pick, and I completely get the vibe shared between the songs.

I never had any feelings or interest in the Foo Fighters. But having seen a lot of David in the media, he's a very sincere, approachable guy. I really like him and now I'm a fan. I would love to see him do more work with Stevie. Perhaps he should be the outside producer of Fleetwood Mac's next album? Perhaps bringing in one her allies to the fray of Fleetwood Mac would be the motivation for her to want to record an album with the group. She'd feel more more safe and represented having a friend involved in the process.

I love that Stevie is mixing it up a bit, appearing with other artists; people who revere her. It obviously makes her happy and hopefully inspires her to make more music.

You're right, though we think of him as ours.

yeah i was actually surprised when people started commenting "Dave's coming home" when another DC Sound City screening with Dave's Q&A was announced for Feb 12 (and promptly sold out). he actually spent most of his formative years in this area.

personally always had much more interest and love for Krist and Kurt (who both are from Seattle, although Krist spent about a year in high school in Croatia and brought back with him to Kurt some interesting music that was happening there at the time). guess Dave just moved there when they hired him as a new drummer.

"when we joined Fleetwood Mac and added Christie [McVie]—it became such an amazing group."

http://stevienicksnews.net/2013/04/20/rock-and-rolls-queen-still-reigns/

Nearly 50 years into her music career, Stevie Nicks is still hustling. After two years of promotion, she wound down the tour for her latest solo record, In Your Dreams—her seventh—in September, having spent part of her summer rejoining Rod Stewart for another leg of their Heart & Soul tour. Less than a month later, she was making the film festival rounds doing press for her first movie, the documentary In Your Dreams about the making of the album. (Producer Dave Stewart also co-directed the picture.)

By January, she was on the road with the Sound City Players, an ad hoc group of artists that included John Fogerty, Rick Springfield, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick and Lee Ving of fear, backed by the Foo Fighters. After four dates with the Sound City Players, Nicks was back in Los Angeles rehearsing with Fleetwood Mac for their forthcoming tour. (During that time, she also managed to rehearse for a 90-minute set with country act Lady Antebellum, taped as part of CMT’s Crossroads series.)

“A long time ago, Fleetwood Mac wouldn’t have been happy—pre-1981, [pre-] Bella Donna—about me doing other stuff because it was all about Fleetwood Mac at the point,” say the singer shortly after arriving in New York for the Sound City Players show this past February. “After I did my solo album, I saw them down and said, “Listen, guys. I’m not going anywhere. I just need a vehicle for some of these many, many songs that will never make it onto the Fleetwood Mac records,.’”

One of those songs—the tough-love rocker “You Can’t Fix This,” which appears on the new Real to Reel album as part of Dave Grohl’s Sound City film project—is presently a major focus for her. And, one might argue, as personal a song as she’s ever written.

The Old Dreams and the New Realities of Rock and Roll

While on tour in Australia in November 2011, her 18-year-old godson Glen Parrish died of drug-related causes at a fraternity party at UCLA. (The exact cause of death remains unknown.) Nicks—who was the first to hold the boy after his birth—says the high school senior battled heroin addiction, among other substance abuse issues.

“For me, I remember the little fourth grader [or] the little second grader that would sit on my lap and was so sweet and kind,” she says. “Glen, for a long time, lived in my house in Phoenix with all of us. My sister-in-law Lori pretty much raised Glen, [my niece] Jessie and [Glen’s little sister] Callais. … Something like that happens, and it reaches out like tendrils. It touches so many people.”

The lyrics are about more than just the young Parrish—they’re about the halcyon days of Fleetwood Mac: “Dancing with the devil/Call it respect, call it fear/But we never allowed the devil to come to the party/We were careful in our own way/We walked through the darkness/We made a pact not to dance with the devil.”

Nicks identifies the song’s devil as both the idea of “overdoing it with drugs,” with the first-hand knowledge that kids today are ingesting an unholy “cauldron” of substances and, with regard to Fleetwood Mac, heroin.

“We were told in the very beginning: ‘Don’t do it,’” she recalls of the ‘70s. “It will be the one thing that burns you down. So we never did and we never hung out with people that did that.” Ironic as Nicks’ anti-drug cry may seem, given that Fleetwood Mac’s cocaine habit is the stuff of legend, her attitude suggests—as the line “We were careful in our own way” reflects—that the band members had an innate sense of responsibility that isn’t present in the young partiers of today. “Hopefully, it’s going to do exactly what I wanted,” she says of “You Can’t Fix This.” “It’s going to give Glen’s death a voice.”

While she won’t be performing the song on the current Fleetwood Mac tour, fans will hear other new tunes. Two—“Sad Angel” and “Miss Fantasy”—were refined by Lindsey Buckingham and Nicks out of a possible eight that had been sketched out in early 2012 by “the boys” of the band. A third, “Without You,” has its genesis in the Buckingham Nicks II sessions, which morphed into 1975’s Fleetwood Mac.

Speaking of Buckingham Nicks, their original—and only—album has never been released in any digital format. For their 40th anniversary this year, the duo hopes to re-release the record. “We hope that we can figure out a way to shoot this record out because we want people to have it,” she says. “It’s not hard to understand why—when we joined Fleetwood Mac and added Christie [McVie]—it became such an amazing group.

I've never heard Stevie called Chris 'Christie' before. That's... bizarre.

I have a feeling there was more to that quote than what was printed. I would also guess that Stevie was referring to adding Chris' voice into the Buckingham Nicks harmonies.

Yes, I think she means when they became a trio, just added Christine to their two voices, as she says in the SYW program: they were meant to be three for all of those years.

She probably said Christine and whoever transcribed it heard it as "Christie." For whatever reason, based on the pieces I read, people outside of the band are just itching to call her "Christie," for whatever reason. It's an obsession.

I have an interview clip on VHS from MTV's Week In Rock (or maybe it was the Top 20 Video Countdown), that I recorded circa 1990, and it says "Christie McVie" on the bottom of the screen.

(Posted on chitchat, wanted to share condolences here where people know who i'm talking about..)
Marcia Parrish, mom of Glen Parrish Jr (who YCFT is about), just passed away also a few days ago. Jess, Lori, Glen Sr (Stevie's old manager) and his daughter Callais (little girl in IYD and the recent music videos) have been posting about it online. So sad.
Here's one of my favorite photos of Stevie. Marcia is sitting next to her, pregnant with Glen Jr.

Sound City: Real To Reel has been nominated for a Grammy in the "Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media" category...So if it wins I think Stevie will get a Grammy since she has a song on the record...

I was thinking of this Friday after the Grammy nomination special on TV.

I love to see some track stems come out for YCFT for I can back off alittle on the heavy guitar to hear Stevie's lovely voice.

In the meantime I hope it wins the Grammy for Dave and and Stevie.

It probably to late for her IYD docu to get noticed for a nomination this time around..

You Can't Fix This wasn't nominated for a Grammy on its own, but Dave's collaboration with Paul was. Glad the album as a whole was as well. I wonder how it works regarding the allocation of Grammys to artists who guested on the album, so to speak. She has a songwriting refit so that should mean something.
