What is everyone's least favorite Stevie song (solo)? And what is it that you think makes it horrible? Defend your answer and get fiesty! I think Stevie would appreciate the passion ;)

I think mine has to be "That Made Me Stronger." I enjoy the vocals just fine, but the lyrics in the chorus just kill it for me. It's like, c'mon Stevie... work on it a little harder, you know you can do better...

God, there are so many...

Imperial Hotel
The Nightmare
I will run to you (a tom petty throwaway he would never put on his own albums)
Two Kinds of Love
Blue Denim
Docklands
Doing the Best that I can
Cry Wolf (her vocal is god awful on it and its a great song)
I still miss someone
Fire Burning
Loves A Hard Game to Play
Jane
Love is Like aRiver
Desert Angel
Touched by an Angel
That Made Me Stronger
Too Far From Texas (really good song with a terrible vocal from Stevie)
Love Is (Bland as hell)
Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind (nice song with another horrible, half-ass vocal from Stevie because she didn't write it)

That is what I thought about that song. It was not sophisticated at all and it was lazy. It made more sense then a lot of her songs though.

I dont neccesarily like when her songs make sense. I think the amiguity of her lyrics is what really captures me. It allows the listener the opportunity to apply it to their own life however they want. I like the versatility.

I LOVE just about all of these! I'm over here, just stunned, to see such a few of my favorites on this list. It looks like they're all from after she made the change from mainstream to AC. Which is sad to me. I think as an artist evolves, they expect their audience to evolve with them (and I think most do). But if an artist sticks with the same thing over and over again, they become a 'one trick pony.' Such a double edge sword...

Sometimes I like it, but in the case of Thrown Down and Illume, songs with stellar production, I think her lyrics hurt the songs.

To me, the lyrics ARE her songs. Sure, she does the rough draft of the musicality to accompany it, but what behind it is, in a sense, someone else's work. For instance, I really just cant get on board with Soldier's Angel (try as I might). But I dont think its the lyrics that bother me. The music behind it just is so disjointed from itself that instead of the flow that i typically fall into with her songs, just gets bumpy (for lack of a better word)

Although I DID ask why, so I suppose your response IS justifiable...

Elaborate on Jane, if you will. It seems to be one that comes up over and over again that people dont like. To me, it's a classic Stevie sound. And PLEASE don't tell me because the word chimpanzee is in the song. It's such a shame that a single word can ruin such a great song for so many people.

It's the Chimpanzee line. The lyric is embarrassing. It wasn't a bad song, but she ruined it with that line. On the other hand, Docklands, Too Far From Texas and Cry Wolf are great songs written by other people but Stevie ruined them with terrible vocals. There are different reasons why I dislike songs.

P.S. I thought we were just talking about Stevie's solo songs, but if we are talking about Fleetwood Mac too, then add these.

Freedom
The Second Time
Sweet Girl
Paper Doll
No Questions Asked
Goodbye Baby
Not Make Believe

I can't put Illume or Thrown Down on the list because Lindsey's production was simply stellar. He was right about her lyrics in Throw Down though.

I had problems playing "Sometimes Its a Beach" at work do to others at the time did not want to hear the cursing so I had to skip it every time it came up on the mp3 player or CD player.

Probably today I would get away with it since today's tunes are loaded with cursing.

First off, I love Jane. It's a touching, genuine and heartfelt song. The word chimpanzee was unavoidable in a tribute to Jane Goodall.

If left to only *one* pick, it might be That Made Me Stronger. All in all, it's not terrible, but the fact that the music for a song *about writing that song yourself* was written by two others left me unimpressed, and amused at the irony.

Ghosts Are Gone is another on my personal worst-ever by Stevie list. It's just...clangy and brazen (not in a good way) and though I don't skip it, because I don't believe in skipping songs while listening to an album in full, I certainly do not like it in any way and typically will vaccuum or engage in some other distraction while it's playing.

Cry Wolf. Stick a fork in my ears, please. Or just turn it off. "Whaaance too often..." Ugh.

That's really it. I love Stevie's music, and I hear good things in almost every song she's ever released. I hear far better things in many songs that were never released, but that's another topic.

Let's see....

"That Made Me Stronger" -- Too literal.
"Desert Angel" -- I know she meant well, but come on..."I was born in the desert, so I know how it feels there." And her screaming "Operation Desert Shield! Operation Desert Storm!" is laughable.
"Love Is Like a River"
"One More Big Time Rock and Roll Star" -- Nonsensical babble. Though I do like when the chorus kicks in.
"Cry Wolf"

From FM:
"When I See You Again"
"Not Make Believe"
"Freedom"

My vote goes to her rendition of "I Still Miss Someone". I have heard other versions of this classic but Stevie's is the worst. It is a beautiful country song and that's why I don't get how she could ruin it with that cheap keyboard arrangement and whistles in the background. Truly awful.

When it comes to her original songs...well partially hers...I think I would choose "Cheaper Than Free" with its kindergarten rhymes. The melody is fine but the lyrics seem to be written in less than minute.

"Gate and Garden" -It's the weakest song from "The Wild Heart" musically and lyrically. But there are times when I listen to the whole album and the song kind of suits the atmosphere and doesn't make me cringe.

For this, I must point to the mess that is Rock a Little. Sister Honey and The Nightmare are the anti-christ of all Stevie songs when you stack them up against the beauty of Gold Dust Woman or Storms. All of her solo records except Bella Donna and In Your Dreams (although both have weaker songs, but not clunkers) contain songs that are in the definitive clunker category. This is the real reason why she dropped out of the mainstream and when people call her a legend, you will never hear of dreck like The Nightmare mentioned as a "classic" tune.

I stand with Karmacontestant as a fan of "Jane," a sweet and touching tribute to Ms. Goodall. I also like the oft-slagged When I See You Again, The Second Time, and Blue Eyes.

My dislikes are the junky-sounding stuff like Blue Lamp, One More Big Time R&R Star, Gold and Braid, I Need to Know, and most of the first half of the BD album.

Close runners-up are Blue Denim and Rose Garden.

I also dislike the moaning monotone jibberish of Rooms on Fire.

Woah, didn't realise so many people disliked Freedom, for me it's one of her better songs 1985-2001. Then again, Every Day is one of my favourite song on TISL, so...

I wonder if there wouldn't be so much "That Made Me Stronger" hate if she hadn't told the story behind the song in *every* promo interview she did for TISL.

I think everyone's chief complaint is that the song is too literal, and the lyrics pretty bland. But do we consider the lyrics so literal because we know what they mean? What if she hadn't told that story in the interviews, leaving us to speculate as to what the lyrics were about? As though we had no idea of her mid-90s writing block?

Just a thought.

As far as solo stuff goes..

I'd have to say MOST of her stuff on OsoTM is absolutely dreadful. There are maybe 1 or 2 high points but... even those high points aren't very high.

Street Angel is similar to OsoTM in terms of crappiness.

There are some pretty bad songs on her other albums too (I'm looking at you, Rock a Little and TISL), but I don't think any of them reach the true depths of god-awful that most of the songs on SA and OsoTM effortlessly descend into.

I've become much more forgiving over the years, having developed a healthy love/hate relationship with Stevie's more questionable lyrics and songs. They represent and expose an off-kilter and out-of-sorts side of Stevie.

I often wonder "what the hell was she thinking?" with some of the choices she makes. While some songs may not be up to par, there is always some quirk - a lyric line, a guitar lick, a melody or something that has some redeemable quality.

A Stevie clunker is not like any other...unusually unique.

ITA, very well put

We could be here all nite and day discussing the less than stellar song choices...if I had to pick one, it would be Love is like a River. The track rocks, but I can't get into the guitar "nar, nar, nar, nar, nar" and her line "straight back" yuck!

some others that are not so great: One more Big Time, Cheaper than Free, etc.

It's funny how a lot of the songs ppl mention, I absolutly adore!
Enchanted, Love Is, FFG, Uncondtional Love, Maybe Love, Just Like a Woman, Jane, Kick It, I Still Miss Someone, Doing the Best I Can, Fire Burning, Love's a Hard Game, Too Far from Texas, the list goes on.....

Jane, Jane, and Jane. I am always amazed (and appalled-- hey, you said get feisty) at the love for this song. Total embarrassment. Ick. Skip it every time.

Wattsamattababy. Ooops, I mean When I See You Again. though I love the vibe of the song, the vocals and c'mon, the lyrics...baby...baby..wassamatta baby.... lazy.

Desert Angel. A hot mess that part of me likes but the logical part of me finds a total sloppy mess that could have used some Lindsey-imposed discipline.

That Made Me Stronger. the verses and the chorus sound like they were pasted together from two totally different, unrelated songs.

The funny thing about Stevie is although she readily admits to being eccentric she has always had a tendancy to go with what she feels are conservative and commercial choices in producers and collaberators in presenting her music.Particularly if you compare her with other eccentrics like Bjork or Kate Bush who have made real attempts to push the bounds of pop/rock music. The one time when she really allowed Lindsey to move her songs in that direction resulted in what many fans including myself consider to be the artistic highpoint of her career. Her natural eccentricity still manages to seep through in alot of her work nonetheless .

The song is a tribute to Jane Goodall, who spent her life conducting research by observing the behavior of chimpanzees. It's a shame so many people don't realize that. Stevie's singing about the chimps makes so much sense here; it really fits in well. She's certinly not being vague or self-serving with these lyrics.

RAL is just...a hot 80s mess. I really like Talk to Me, but I absolutely loathe I Can't Wait, especially in conjunction with that music video. Just...I have no words. I totally understand that Stevie, Lindsey, and FM had to move with the times to keep relevant, but when I hear songs like I Can't Wait my heart breaks. What happened to that mystical hippy child? (I really don't like most 80s sounds, I make exceptions for FM and a few others who were artists in the 60s or 70s as well)

I'm actually really surprised to see that some people don't like Beauty and the Beast or Love Is! Two songs I absolutely adore. Gorgeous classic solo Stevie

Edit: This has made me go back to the albums I don't listen to often. Another pet peeve of mine is when she sacrifices musicality for her words - she will shove as many words as possible into a line and it sounds like she's reading a book with a slight melody. I think Sister Honey is a good example of that; I also get that vibe during parts of New Orleans. I was also listening to When I See You Again which makes me feel embarrassed for them...I just get this strong feeling that Lindsey had given up at that point. I know he cares about the work he puts out, but he must have been emotionally and creatively spent to the point where he just didn't care if her songs were good or not. He isn't without fault on that album either, imho, e.g. Family Man. However, I place blame at all of their feet on that clunker, there is no excuse for lyrics like "Whatsamattababy".

well, i've said it before... but i really cannot tolerate Love Is. The minute i hear Sarah M. imitating a garbage truck backing up (boop boop boop) i skip it. The other problem i don't care for it is Stevie's vocal on it. She's belting it out full force and more nasal than usual... the first time i heard her scream "to the corner of her mouth" i cringed... she may as well have screamed "big fat mouth"... It's such a shame because i would probably love the song had she sung with a softer vocal like Goodbye Baby or Moonlight.

I agree with KindofWoman re When I See You Again:However, I place blame at all of their feet on that clunker, there is no excuse for lyrics like "Whatsamattababy".

For an album as well written and polished production wise as Tango in the Night, this song was big mistake. To me, it's Stevie's most poorly written song but actually may have been good with a stellar lyric. But, it's just so wrong past the first line making it a painful listening experience adding to that the terrible vocal, this is Fleetwood Mac's worst song of all time. Lyrically, to add to the misery of Whatsamattababy, is that excruciating line about the dream being gone but staying up nights on end and then there is at least a dream left. What? For Shame on the whole band for allowing this to go public.

The 'dream' verse is one of the better ones to me. It makes me feel something, at least. The second verse about the hallways and doors is the worst in my mind (then again, there's probably 5 other Stevie songs with verses about hallways and doors that are equally as  lyrically but somehow work, but with the combination of all the other terrible things about the song it just doesn't work here).

And I actually think what's the matter baby's would have been fine if it was just said once or twice, but the fact that the entire chorus is just "whats the matter baby" over and over again is what kills it.

Then again, I actually love When I See You Again even though I admit that it's absolutely awful overall. I think it COULD have been a great song, if the it wasn't sung in the weird baby-voice and if the production was better. Instrumentally I like it, melodically I like it, thematically it's nice... it's just everything else brings it down.

Thank God for Lindsey coming in at the end.

I agree that the song had promise Wildhearted 90, it has a nice back drop and a good premise for a love song, perhaps they could re-write some of the lyrics and save it in a live setting? The way it showed up on Tango though, is a major misstep and shows just how much Stevie had deteriorated over the decade from her peak of greatness.

When I See You Again is a definite guilty Pleasure for me. it would have been so much better if she were in better health. Her vocals sound like she swallowed a billion ashtrays. and yes the chorus or lack thereof can get grating....but hell I still love this song. Now Welcome to the Room......what. the. HELL?!!!!!! that's TRUE crap.

Agreed. I love When I See You Again.

****

Rock A Little is my favorite Stevie album, *because* of the dated sound. Because of Sister Honey and The Nightmare and Imperial Hotel. It captures a moment in time that will never come again. It ecapsulated the sound of a decade. It is lavish, extravagant, wild and coke-riddled - just like the decade it emulates, and most of all, it *is* the woman that Stevie was when she recorded it.

Every song on the album is a favorite of mine. Every. One.

Not to be judgemental, but there are some Stevie fans who only like Stevie when her songs are trimmed, neat, controlled and...proper top-40 radio fodder with grammatically correct concise verses and choruses. I am not one of those fans. Without the wild moments, the crazy lyrics, the nonsense, and yes - even the klonopin haze - she wouldn't be herself.

aww...nooo.... there's so much worse! I actually like this one, but think the vocal could be toned down just a bit.

Two Kinds of Love....has promise, gets a little lost "two kinds of love-- one for the way you walk, one for the way you love me...." never made much sense to me.

I love me some hot mess Stevie, (I like most songs on RAL) but some songs are just a little too much

Only Stevie songs I really, really dislike: Desert Angel, Street Angel, When I See You Again, Destiny, and Cheaper Than Free.

There's plenty that I skip, but don't hate. Like That Made Me Stronger, Welcome To The Room Sara, Love's a Hard Game To Play, approx half of OSOTM, and the majority of BTM.

Surprisingly, I'm kind of into Street Angel. Never hated that album.

I disagree. "When I See You Again", "Love Is" or BATB are actually really good examples of Stevie's idiosyncratic writing style. Those songs are completely & uniquely songs that only Stevie could have written. I might agree that the musical arrangements are "nothing special". But if Stevie wrote songs like every pop/rock songwriter all her songs would be more along the lines of "Talk To Me".

How did Beauty and the Beast get lumped into this. It's sophisticated. I would choose many other songs to lump with When I See You Again and Love Is. I'm sure that Lindsey and the other producer did they best could. If they were to change the songs to something interesting they should probably get writing credit.

It is the mystique that those songs carry that makes them superior to a lot of the poppy stuff. What made the woman in WISYA so desperately sad? What are the cryptic lyrics referring to? When she resorts to whispering and sobbing that one line, is she echoing something he said? Something they shared? To me the delivery of the song is a little work of art, a one-off performance of something so intimate, raw, and painful. Love Is is similar, with a weird partial conversation that leads to devastation, and the arrangement forebodes it, the echoing background vocals and slow drama, and the final segment of the song is heartbreaking. How can anyone resist the bizarre off-kilter beauty of these? Nobody else could conceive of songs like these, they are Stevie's special genius. They pull me in and keep me coming back.

I don't see any mystique in WISYA, but I agree with you about Love Is. It is like I am hearing one side of a conversation and concluding what happened and what the other person said, piecing it together, is part of the intrepid joy, lending the song complexity.

Everything that is said and unsaid, summed up with I know you cannot stay. The weariness in her voice and lyrics explain: We've had this conversation so many times before . . . the song takes you through the years in the relationship and all the partings its had. The love doesn't make the separations easier, nor does it make up for them. It just makes them a given.

In that case, Lindsey should get writing credit on anything interesting of Stevie's he's ever laid a hand on.

MOST of Stevie's songs are bland an uninteresting at their core... luckily they also tend to at least have a nice melody and decent lyrics. And then someone comes in with their magic wand and creates a cool arrangement around what would have been a boring song - like Dreams.

I dunno.... what I find most interesting about her demos is how compelling some of them are from the get-go, and yet when you hear some of the finished versions that have been muddled with by other people, producers, musicians and what not you think "what happened to that interesting song??"

Oh, it's very true that people can ruin her songs just as easily as they can make them great, by doing too much or taking it too far off course. I was responding to the insinuation that these songs started out bland and boring and that nothing could be done with them to save them. And I don't think that's necessarily true... well I mean, of course she's got some crappy songs that are just pretty bad all around - but I don't think it's because they were too bland to work with. A lot of her songs start out bland musically. Most of the time, in my mind, it has to do with them being simply too out-there and nonsensical and just all over the place... like Stevie to the 10th power.

I love her demos - some of the most played stuff on my iTunes - but most of the early ones have no real musical arrangement, it's just her plodding away at the piano (which sometimes is beautiful (planets of the universe needed to stay closer to that, imo), but often is just her playing the chords which is, yes, "bland"). It's her melody and lyrics and emotion that reaches you (or at least, that's what reaches me). Whether or not those things are conveyed in the final product depends on who gets their hand on the song.

So in short, I don't see that how her songs start out has any bearing on how they end up (so long as they've got decent lyrics and a good vocal melody - not trying to imply that The Goldfish and the Ladybug could be a masterpiece or something ). Everything else can be (and is) changed so much that it's silly to say there is nothing that can be done with it. For better or worse.

And I actually think what's the matter baby's would have been fine if it was just said once or twice, but the fact that the entire chorus is just "whats the matter baby" over and over again is what kills it.

No one has ever explained to me why the repetition of "what's the matter baby" makes for such a terrible chorus, but "hold me hold me hold me hold me hold me hold me" is great pop music.

I'm not defending WISYA. I'm just one of the minority who doesn't understand all the fuss over "Hold Me."

Not being anything remotely close to a songwriter myself, having been a fan of Stevie's writing and style since we became lucky enough to know who she is, I can say that she has written some truly wonderful songs that influenced many people after her in the music industry. Having heard a lot of her demos, the basic structure around the song is there before the production work begins. Where I think she has strayed off course from time to time and written some truly bad material, comes down to her staying in touch with one basic fact. That is if her writing is going to be made public and people are going to pay for it, it is the end listener who needs to have the satisfying experience, along with she herself. The songs that suffer have that theme of being too out of reach for the listener and the listener cannot relate to it. When we all compare her best and worst material, there is some difference of opinion but at the end of the day, the songs considered classic calibre material, such as Storms or Gold Dust Woman are clearly in a different stratosphere that That Made me Stronger or Silver Girl. I have learned over the years as a fan, that as much as I hated to admit it, my girl Stevie was not perfect and she was as deserving of criticism as the rest of us. I think it's ok for us to point out how dreadful some of her material is, because it is, but at the same time recognizing her rightful place in rock history.

Well, I love WISYA, so you don't have to defend it to me lol.

The only issues with "what's the matter baby" that I can think of have nothing to do with the actual lyric - it's just that she pronounces it weirdly, the vocal is terrible, and the melody doesn't really go anywhere. Maybe if it wasn't repeated so much, people would have been able to let those things go?

If we put what's the matter baby into the context of a conversation, it is a question being asked. It might have been a powerful lyric if she had followed up with an assumption such as " what's the matter baby, have you been sad/lonely/missing me" what ever, and maybe appearing 2 times max in the song.

On it's own, it sucks and sounds like she is nagging this baby person.

Kind of beside the point, I suppose, but I never saw it as Stevie asking someone what the matter is. She's wondering if someone will still care about her the next time she sees them - "will your great eyes still say, "What's the matter baby?"

Well, how something is sung matters just as much as what's sung. It's not only the repetition. It's the unvarying drone of the question. If Hold Me was being chanted on and on and on in a monotone, it'd be a different story. But the words are a demand, a plea, a hope. High, low, fast, slow.

Hold Me has a complex, diverse melody. Many things going on at once and different things going on in different parts of the song. It boasts a beautiful arrangement and, I think, superb plush production.

WISYA is just a meandering nudge. But I wouldn't have thought to compare the two.

I happen to really like some of her slow songs... Beauty & The Beast, It's Only Love, The Highwayman, etc. In fact, I even enjoy The Second Time. lol. And my 2 fav Stevie/Mac songs are probably Storms and Beautiful Child, both of them being very slow too.
It's just a lot of the later slow songs (like Love's a Hard Game To Play or When I See You Again), are really simplistic and bland. In my opinion, the vocals are - (don't kill me) - kind of lazy and not that great. And we all know she can still sing. The proof's in Call On Me For Magic, Love Changes, It's Only Love, etc. But the musical arrangement and vocals in a lot of the other songs being mentioned in this thread are just boring.

I think so. I don't know if the lyrics are the last straw or first straw in disliking a song, but it's the one that's most easily grasped. I mean, Jane came up here too and I don't think people dislike that song just for the forgotten chimpanzee. It's just a shortcut way of expressing everything that's wrong. Silly words can make it so easy to instantly illustrate a point. I am, what I am, what I am: a family man.

Apparently I really shouldn't have mentioned any of her demos because people keep responding to the same comment I made lol. I love her demos, they're some of the most played stuff on my iTunes. But I'll repeat what I said earlier.

I'm not talking about the songs. I'm talking about their early arrangements and whether or not that has an effect on how they end up as a finished product. My post was in response to the insinuation that songs like WISYA or The Highwayman start out as 'bland' and 'uninteresting' and there's nothing anyone could have done to fix them. (For the record, The Highwayman is one of my favorite Stevie songs and I don't understand the hate, but that's a different story).

I don't agree, because I think most if not all of her songs start out as just shells of what they eventually become. And what FILLS those shells largely depends on who gets their hands on it, and that can be detrimental to the end product. That's not to say that the words and the melodies and the emotion aren't strong and interesting at the start - but the arrangements are not, because they really don't exist in the beginning. And the final arrangement can have a big effect on whether or not the compelling qualities of the early versions show through.

We all know there are songs that have started out wonderfully in their early forms and then turned out not so great as a finished product. Likewise, there are songs that have also started out good but have been greatly enhanced through the fleshing out of the arrangement and production.

And then there are songs that are just terrible all around. But I don't think they're terrible because they're bland. I tend to think they're terrible because the lyrics are too out there/nonsensical/cheesy, have terrible vocals, terrible production, etc. But that's just me.

Personally, I love what many people consider boring of Stevie's - like the Gypsy piano demo (I wouldn't go playing it at a party or anything. But I love it. It's interesting to me). I know some people think it's terrible, and yet, most people love the actual song as it appears on Mirage. But if it had ended up differently, would people be putting Gypsy on this list? Would the argument be made that it was bland from the start and it was just fated for disaster?

I'll reiterate that some of her songs definitely ARE terrible and I question why anyone ever thought it was a good idea to record them (hello, most of SA and OsoTM). I just don't think it's entirely because they're 'uninteresting.'

Talk to me - Stutter in a chorus, now really!
Love's a hard game to play - Klonopin was not her friend in this game
Whole lotta trouble - I HATED that one, generic, silly, stupid
Sometimes it's a bitch - It was bad enough to listen to her singing it, I really could have done without her complaining about it later.

and the absolute worst song ever:
Desert Angel. Lyrics, intention, music, her voice, the drama, the godawful photo of her in the flag-dress, her overall unability to get over herself - it really was an epic disaster to me. That one made me cringe.

One of my favorites of all. I love the melody.

I could take what you wrote, however, and apply it to "Gate And Garden". I still think this is the worst song she ever recorded. Talk about cheeeeeeeeeeseeeey.

It was also the very first SN song that I did not like. I had liked every song of hers that FM did, and every song on Bella Donna. So I was shocked when The Wild Heart came out and I heard "Gate and Garden". I listened to it again just to make sure I was really hearing what I was hearing. After that second time, I've never heard it again. I would practically break my neck flying across the room to get to the record player so I could move the needle before G&G started playing! It's funny how songs that annoy you stick with you; I haven't heard it since 1983, but I can still hear it in my head! I bet I remember most of the words, too. (There is a gate, it can be guarded, well it is not heaven, and it has a garden , so to the red rose.... AAAAHHHHH! )

maybe some of these horrible lyric issues could have been avoided or improved if there was some willingness on Stevie's part to allow some capable editing...... even the greatest novelists, essayists, poets, journalists, whoever...have editors who read through and make some suggestions for improvement. Doesn't mean they have to accept all those suggestions, but to say " these words as I've written them are sooo sacred they can never be changed under any circumstances"....... that's just ego. No one's words are that spot-on every time. Sometimes one gets too close to one's work to be able to step back and hear it how a listener would hear it. I get the feeling her hard-ass stance on her words grew out of her relationship with Lindsey and the, shall we say, less-than-diplomatic approach he might have taken.
But honestly, lyrics like
"And the dream says I want you
And the dream is gone
So she stays up nights on end
Well at least there is a
dream left"

"And the angel said, "Well you must have had a dream...
And you remember it...
"Till the dream followed through...
Till the -- end of the dream...
and the dream came true"

could realllly have benefited from an editor. It seems like LB has been the only one who's ever had the guts to tackle this issue over the years; once she went solo no one wanted to rock the boat....

You know you just hit on my major issue with solo Stevie...with the Mac she was forced to be edited a little. Solo I feel like she was given free reign which I do understand. But no one had the guts sometimes to say "Stevie? um....no." Her albums are WAY to long with songs that are great meandering. While others could be cut entirly. I've been called out for dumping on her, but that's my main Issue

I actually think that early on Jimmy Iovine did a pretty decent job of editing her which probably partially explains why he was given the boot as she became more grandiose and coked out.

I agree that Gate and Garden was one of the many lyrical missteps on the Wild Heart, but the way she sang the song, almost redeems the sloppy job she did with the song's lyrics.

Spot on, the fact that he wouldn't allow Julia on either Bella Donna or the Wild Heart does lend some weight to his influence. (although I think he was wrong about that song).

Some Become Strangers

Love these two.

It is the mystique that those songs carry that makes them superior to a lot of the poppy stuff. What made the woman in WISYA so desperately sad? What are the cryptic lyrics referring to? When she resorts tko whispering and sobbing that one line, is she echoing something he said? Something they shared? To me the delivery of the song is a little work of art, a one-off performance of something so intimate, raw, and painful. Love Is is similar, with a weird partial conversation that leads to devastation, and the arrangement forebodes it, the echoing background vocals and slow drama, and the final segment of the song is heartbreaking. How can anyone resist the bizarre off-kilter beauty of these? Nobody else could conceive of songs like these, they are Stevie's special genius. They pull me in and keep me coming back.

I agree about "Love Is." I think it's an achingly beautiful song. I get what you're saying about WISYA, and I admit the song adds a certain darkness to the Tango album with all of its glossy pop. However, I still think the song is poorly written and horribly sung.

AAAAHHHHH! )

Oh, come on. It's going to be 30 years. Please listen to it ONE more time. Then, you won't have to hear it again until 2043. Deal?

When you break it down, I agree with you that it's a silly song, but her voice soars and has so much passion. I don't worry about the gate and the garden and guarding it. The slow start just builds up to the part where I am jumping up and bouncing, "Do I love you? Well I always did (every night!) Nobody knows nothing bout it. They know nothing bout it." Her voice shrill, then husky, "they know nothing about it," secretive, pulling me into the clandestine love. There I am in the shower, in the car, screaming with an imaginary mic, fantasizing that I can actually sing. That's what those Wild Heart songs can do to you.

I'd remember if I hadn't heard it since 1983 too, because of that infectious part.

Yeah, I completely agree. At first, I just loved the song because of the way she sang it. The vocals just fit the mood created by the band perfectly. I didn't really look at the lyrics until about a year ago, and was kind of let down. But I still love the song, and I think the way she sings it really does make up for the lyrics, unlike Jane and Whole Lotta Trouble, etc.

In the cannon of odd Stevie songs, Gate and Garden, despite its flaws, is one of my favorites. If you don't analyze the lyrics too much, the song has a cool, pleasant vibe to it.

Has she ever talked about this song; about what inspired it? Either she wasn't capable of writing lyrics up-to-par with the concept she had in her head, or this was a quick knock off as filler for the album.. The lyrics are undeniably lazy, and slightly incoherant. Still, there are some interesting lyric lines that somewhat redeem the song, and she sings them with conviction.

So to the red rose goes the passion

It's just a game that we play
'til someone steals it
Someone steals it away

You don't give in to yourself
You give in to your friends

You say you seek the truth
I say all is fair

Stevie sings this particular part of the song so amazingly well, to me it stands out as pretty close to being one of the shining moments of her career. If she could have only kept that conviction in later years, she would've done some amazing things.

My least favorite is probably "Sister Honey." The "well awlright, bay-beh!" at the beginning always put me off.

"Blue Lamp" is a skip for me too. It kind of wander and never finds enough of a melody for me.

I wonder why there are some songs of Stevie's that I think are musically "enough" for me or her vocals are stellar enough that I don't even pay attention to the lyrics. Case in point is Gate And Garden. I agree with whoever said that by that time in the album I need something fluffy or fluffier. I think the song in the sense and the sequencing of it in the album was a smart move.

But then there are other songs where it's the lyrics that move me to no end. So I find it curious where sometimes I pay attention and sometimes I don't. And I don't do that on purpose so something about the song says ok don't pay attention to much to the lyrics. Maybe I realize subconsciously that they'll disappoint me so I avoid reading them lol.

Anyway, my list is:

1) Beauty And The Beast - I know most everyone loves this song but to me it is the one that keeps Wild Heart from being my favorite album.

2) Freedom - just shoot me whenever this song comes on

3) Street Angel - please go back to heaven and leave me alone

4) Love Is Like A River - well then go drown in it cuz I never want to hear you again

5) Somebody Stand By Me -but I'll forgive you since you didn't write it

6) Docklands - and why did you ever put this into your concert set? grrr

7) Blue Denim - utter monotone drivel

There are others that I don't really care for and thus usually skip like:

Highwayman
Storms
Doing The Best That I Can
That's Alright
Cheaper Than Free
Soldier's Angel
Jane
Just Like A Woman
Kick It
That Made Me Stronger

Every other song of Stevie's I either like, love, or am obsessed with lol.

Rock A Little still remains my favorite album overall.
Other Side Of The Mirror, In Your Dreams, Wild Heart, and TISL are all tied as next favorites because they have just 1 or maybe 2 songs that I think are weak.
Bella Donna is nice but not the gospel everyone else seems to think it is.

And the one that I agree is half-crap is Street Angel but I disagree that it's all crap because I really love half the album including Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind, Greta, and Listen To The Rain and some of Stevie's strongest stuff.

I also love everything on SYW including Not Make Believe which I not only think should have made the regular edition of the album but should have been a single.

When I See You Again I used to despise for 20 years until I listened to it recently and now I feel like I get it and appreciate it.

Hello Viv,

You should listen to Faith HIll's version of Somebody Stand By Me. It is about 500% better than Stevie's. Stevie hacked this song with a god-awful vocal. This is a good song.

I'm very surprised that Somebody Stand By Me is so villified! No love at all?

I always loved the gospel style the song evokes. It's not her usual style, but I thought she pulls it off. In fact, I thought she should record in that vein/style. I still do. It would be a dream for her to work with T.Bone Burnette. It hurts to imagine what she could achieve with his collaboration. With regard to Fleetwood Mac, I don't see T. Bone jiving too well with Lindsey. Not sure why; it's just a bella donna feeling.

I think mine has to be "That Made Me Stronger." I enjoy the vocals just fine, but the lyrics in the chorus just kill it for me. It's like, c'mon Stevie... work on it a little harder, you know you can do better...

When it comes to her original songs...well partially hers...I think I would choose "Cheaper Than Free" with its kindergarten rhymes. The melody is fine but the lyrics seem to be written in less than minute.

Finally, someone said Cheaper Than Free. Ugh! And Stevie and Dave think it's so great. It's by far the weakest song on IYD, followed by Soldier's Angel.

WOW, so many of my favourites are getting a lot of stick. "Doing The Best I Can" is my favourite song on OSOTM and the fact that anybody has mentioned anything from the years between 73 and 82 I find totally mind-bogglingly painful ("Storms" and "Bella Donna" on a WORST list? Call yourself fans!?).

Even the songs that really have always taken a beating are ones I like. "Freedom" is better than any of Stevie's Tango tracks and "The Second Time" is a nice little song with a considerably better vocal than a lot of other stuff from that time. I also really love "Desert Angel", "Paper Doll" and "No Questions Asked".

The ONLY Stevie-penned Fleetwood Mac song that I don't like is "When I See You Again". As for solo songs, here is my complete skip-list:

The Nightmare
Some Become Strangers
Fire Burning
I Still Miss Someone
Unconditional Love
Docklands
Jane
Just Like A Woman
Touched By An Angel
Cheaper Than Free (musically, I think this ends IYD really well, but URGH those lyrics!!)

I've always found ALL of Stevie's songs from 75 - 82 flawless. The only dull moment on The Wild Heart for me is "I Will Run To You", but it's not a bad song. As you can see, the majority of my questionable choices are 87 - 94, but even in this era are some songs I absolutely adore ("Blue Denim" and "Long Way To Go" are 2 of my all time fav's).

Oh, it's very true that people can ruin her songs just as easily as they can make them great

I could not agree with this more. Rupert Hine has a LOT to answer for.

OSOTM is my least favourite Stevie album. The songs are fine (well, most of them), but I cannot bare the overall sound of the album. It sounds so tinny and the drums are often too harsh or too soft. "Whole Lotta Trouble", despite being a rather silly little song, has the potential to be a complete powerhouse with a huge beat, roaring guitars and the brass instruments all mashed up to make one great big boot-stomping hair-brush-in-the-mirror rock chick anthem. However, largely due to poor production on OSOTM, it sounds half done and unfinished, especially on the chorus which doesn't go anywhere. The song doesn't really pick up until the bridge, then falls flat again until the very end of the song. The Timespace and Enchanted remixes are better, but still lacking.

"Rooms on Fire", as much as I love it, could've been a lot better produced.

Oh, I love all of those! "I Need To Know" is a bit annoying in her live set as she has such a large, ignored back catalogue, but the version on the HBO special is awesome. Well, Desert Angel would be my first choice, closely followed by the Soldiers song on IMD and That Made Me Stronger. But, on my chronologically arranged playlist of Stevie songs, I often skip That's Alright and Straight Back. They always strike me as disappointing and, given the fact that they weren't performed live or popped up on compilations, seem to be the first two examples of forgotten or neglected songs in the canon. "The Nightmare" is one of the worst "songs" set to record by anyone ever. I find it completely unlistenable. I think I made it through the whole thing only once, and I was horrified. It is garbage. I was working at Altantic Records when that album (Rock A Little) came out and everyone knew I was a huge Stevie fan. The "song" got passed around the company as a joke and after a little while, other artists on the label got in on making fun of it. They passed it around as an example of her self-indulgence and inability to edit herself. Everyone commented on how aptly-named it was. People started leaving cruel notes, horrific drawings and altered photos on my desk, poking fun at it and Stevie. At first I found the ridicule painful, especially because I knew how bad it was--which did hurt me--but I ultimately had to admit that if you put something that awful on a record that is released to the world, you have to deal with the repercussions. It's unfortunate, because I do think much of Stevie's output and longevity as a solo artist merits her a spot in the R&R Hall of Fame as a solo act, but to this day, there are still a lot of people in the industry who remember that song and some of the other dreck she has produced. It's really quite a shame.

Poor soul!

"The Nightmare" is my "winner" for Worst of Stevie Nicks. Even songs I dislike such as "Docklands," "Fire Burning," and "Cheaper Than Free" have a few redemptive qualities. By contrast ,when it comes to "The Nightmare" - I hear nothing but crap.

I believe this story. I find the song to be horrible, an embarrassment. She was so self indulgent.

I consider the alternate version an improvement over the album version. Not exactly sure what she was trying to achieve with this song. The nonsensical lyrical mishmash is in a style that reminds me of territory she explored with her unreleased obscure oddity Mable Normand.

That story is fascinating (and sort of sad) about how the song was passed around to industry insiders for a good laugh. It was ripe for mocking. It doesn't offend me so I don't avoid the song; it's uniquely Stevie, for better or worse.

Well you can tell she was on drugs when she was making that album. It was self-indulgent. It was sorta of the beginning of the end. The big signal that she wasn't what she was.

Thousand Days. Enough said...

For me, this one is like Not Make Believe. The song may have it's problems, but there's something in the chorus that really moves me. It seems like a thousand days actually sounds like yearning and distance and irrevocable loss.

The music, combined with the almost lethargic vocal just puts a little lump in my throat. I feel it. Michele

To me the overblown stuff like Thousand Days or Nightmare is classic Stevie 'cause of the high drama and big delivery. To me the faux "rock n' roll" stuff is junk unworthy of the goddess, like Blue Lamp, I Need to Know, Gold and Braid, Violet and Blue. Yuck. I mean, how does a Welsh Witch or a Gold Dust Woman end up in a trailer park and a pickup truck?

Funny how I'm trying to think of songs I don't like and I'm not really coming up with much. I do skip songs sometimes. Not a fan of Soilders Angel. Think it has potential but something about the music more than the lyrics bothers me. And not emotionally. I mean it literally irks me and I often skip it. Liked Desert Angel a lot growing up. Probably fulfilled my young idealistic "I care about the world" kind of teenage thing. ;) Cheaper Than Free kind of makes me roll my eyes a bit. I enjoyed it a lot at first. Had it stuck in my head all the time when IYD first came out but so often I turn off the CD player/iPod before I get to it.

Perhaps because I'm younger than many fans (mid-20s) I'm especially fond of TISL because that's my teen years right there and IYD. I'm very very picky about 80's music. Love 70's and 90's but a lot of 80's is so over produced and lots of weird beats and electronic stuff going on. So as a whole I play more recent Stevie more often. But she's one of my 80s singers I adore and like many of you said- her lyrics are the music. So I often adore her 80s lyrics but am not so into "that 80s sound" if that makes sense? Many, many exceptions with Stevie though. And 80's Mac is delicious. ;)

I kind of like the lyrics to The Nightmare. Kills me that she pronounces it "drown- Ding" and the bad 80s pop beat is whoa (just had to play it because I wanted to refresh my memory since its so reviled lol) and lots of cliches yet I don't know maybe I'm just having a rough time in life but shoot I found the lyrics relatable either way.

Gonna have to put more thought into this. Will say I love the song I Still Miss Someone. I must have 8 different covers of it by various different singers and for sure the original by Johnny Cash is my favorite but having often fallen for people I can't have who somehow always have blue eyes, can't tell you how many times I've cried to that one. ;)

Also like the beat/tune/melody in That made Me Stronger for some reason. Ironically I've seen old poems I wrote in my early teens and I actually tried to copy that one more or less. But TISL as a whole has definitely grown deeper and deeper to me as I grew up so maybe that one appealed when I was younger for its transparency? We don't see a whole lot of that with Stevie and I absolutely think her complex (complex maybe isnt the word? but you all know what i mean, I assume!) lyrics have as big appeal and just make it such an experience to listen to her. It's not just listening to an incredible voice but really listening to the lyrics. Few other artists make me listen as hard as Stevie.

I think that also sums up my general view. Most any song I skip is usually because I don't like the music side of it but I can almost always find an absolute lyrical gem or just a darn good line in all her music.

I love all those, but have never been able to like Thousand Days or The Nightmare. I would erase the Time/Life edition line from Stevie's pages for good. I like the first block of lyrics from The Nightmare, but after that, it's like a line for a line -- it's just coked out.

Her pronunciation of that word always bothered me too. It first appeared in the song Sara. I always wondered if she was unintentionally butchering the word.

Only just recently I had an epiphany. On occasion, Stevie sings a word or phrase that is interpreted/heard differently than she intended.

I want to believe that in Sara she is singing drowned in...in the sea of love
And in The Nightmare: Drowning in the sea...drowned in!

I can't believe somebody said 'Beauty and the Beast'. That song is simply beautiful and incredibly moving. :(

I have to say that I like the whole 80's sound of 'The Nightmare' but I agree with the people who say that they dislike the way that she pronounces and sings many words throughout the song. 'The Nightmare' is definitely not my worst Stevie track. In fact, it's not the worst from 'Rock a Little'.

My worst has to be 'Cheaper Than Free'. The lyrics are lazy and embarrassing and Dave's vocals simply aren't good enough or go well with Stevie's. That song was a mistake to put on an album that was overall very good.

I liked Seven Wonders very much wh en it first came out. It was one of my favorite songs from the album. It has fallen out of favor over time. The vocals are, as you say, over the top and shrill, which isn't very appealing. And the lyrics truly suck; so vapid and senseless. A lot of us love Stevie down South, but sometimes we just have to say, "Bless her heart" (which could be translated as "Good lawd, why?!").

These songs make me bless Stevie's heart every time they slip past my filter:

"I Can't Wait": In a cheesy '80s way, this tune boasts some exciting instrumentation. But Stevie sounds frankly confused about how to fit into this Rick Nowels music track. I'm guessing she did a mountain of coke and hoped wailing a lot of "Wells" would carry her through and help it all make sense. She reportedly used her first take, saying some vocals are "magic" even. "Well, bless her heart."

"When I See You Again": This song gets beaten up a lot. Well, it gets my "blessing."

"The Second Time": As with WISYA, the Mac was probably hoping Stevie cook up another tender "Landslide"-style number. But her voice was way too far gone! Around the time this was released, I was joyriding a lot with my oldest friend Stephanie, regularly listening to a mixtape of songs from OSOTM/BTM. I really was trying to get into them (to find some redeeming qualities) until one day Stephanie firmly announced, "No more Stevie Nicks! If you play another Stevie Nicks song, I'm jumping out of this car!" I was frankly startled! But knowing my badass friend Steph, I took her at her word, and there was no "Second Time." In retrospect, I can hardly blame her.

"Desert Angel": You put this on your Best Of. Really? I hope you didn't include this one on the iPods you gave to gave to injured vets. They've been through enough. But you've gotta bless Stevie's heart. It's in the right place.

Like Stevie, I've also gotten my quickie online ordination. So there's probably a lot of other stuff I could "bless" as well. Actually a lot of Disc 2 of the "Enchanted" set falls into that category.

But she had an amazing run from 1973 to 1983, with occasional highlights thereafter. There's only so much I can ask of one of rock 'n roll's greats.

Her singing on it saves the song. It doesn't matter what the lyrics are, because the frantic passionate vocals just sweep me away. I don't adore it, but I really like it and it's one of those songs I could caught singing to myself, when I'm holding an imaginary microphone and pretending to be a superstar.

I guess the dislike for Gate And Garden goes back to the time when I was
15 years old , I was so excited for the album , the only track I knew on it was Stand Back as it was the pre album single.

So I go to my bedroom , as teenagers will do , light the incense , turn on the blacklight and take the album for its maiden voyage on my (at the time) very fabulous, very big , very loud stereo system , took a seat on the floor and checked out the Album cover and the liner notes etc ..
did I mention that I lit incense ?
( it's how us old folks used to listen to a record :)

"Wild Heart" comes on and it's like the best most epic song I've ever heard .

Then : "If Anyone Falls" . Still blown away .

I notice immediately that her voice is drastically different sounding from Bella Donna
And I somehow loved it even more , there was this power and confidence and edge , that to my ears was not previously demonstrated .

Gate and Garden comes on and it was like a crash landing .
This major buzzkill .

Suddenly those new nuances in her voice seem self indulgent and borderline annoying .

4 minutes is a long time when your 15 years old .
And it's a long way ( to go) from the floor to the stereo ... after all that "incense" .
So I suffered .

Enchanted and Nightbird set the Universe right again .

Thanks for indulging me that little walk down Stevie Memory Lane ,

Gate and Garden has always been one of my favourite songs on The Wild Heart.

I actually like the much disdained 'Love is Like a River.' I even like 'Desert Angel', but for all the wrong reasons.

Yes, the lyrics are ridiculous. Stevie, in all her good intentions, doesn't do well in her attempts with specific topical subjects ('Jane,' for example). And, she has a egotistical and compulsive need to insert herself in the topic.

"I was born in the the desert, so I know how it feels there." Really? You lived in a hot area of the country, so you know what's like to live in a war zone? Oh, the drama!

"This is the first thing that I've written since I wrote about freedom." I'm assuming she is referencing her song 'Freedom' on Behind the Mask. Too self-involved, given the intended subject matter.

And for what it's worth, I enjoy 'Gate and Garden' for the mood it evokes. Stevie is the only person in the world who could write a song like that. Her stellar vocals save it. There are there are a few very nice lyrical passages in the song. I recall a review of the album (likely Rolling Stone) that took umbrage with the song; especially the chorus.

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's brilliant, but it's not terrible. It's inoffensive and a bit bland. Especially seeing as the rest of TWH side B is so intense - "Nothing Ever Changes", "Sable On Blond" and "Beauty and The Beast" are flawless.

I love "Gate and Garden." I remember being a junior in college and hearing this song for the first time. I was lying on the floor of this apartment I was renting with friends. I put The Wild Heart in my Walkman, put on my headphones, and let the music play. When I heard the opening verses to "Gate," I got chills:

There is a gate
It can be guarded
Well, it is not heaven
And it has a garden
So to the red rose
Goes the passion

For some reason, those lines and the way she sings them (with such vulnerability) moved me and I just kept rewinding over and over again. Must have been the mood and where I was in my life at that time....But even to this day, when I hear that song, I get a little pang in my stomach and I'm immediately transported back to that little apartment.

I'll probably be vilified for this, but I've never been a fan of "Stop Dragging My Heart Around." I mean, it's not bad, but personally I've always found it to be a bit of a snoozer.....

So true! My wife and I do this song in our little cover band and I don't know how you can possibly perform such a strong lyric and forceful music with a bland take. It's so passionate. And yet, even early on, she seemed uninvested. Today, the song is just perfunctory if she does it at all, and it was (chart-wise) her biggest solo hit.

I'd like to know why she's doing that strangled cat voice, like she did on Talk To Me with the veil a swelling tear line. Was she trying to sound like her '75 self?

Not sure but I always LOVED it!

Me too! Rather than bellowed bland pseudo-rock.

That is my favorite part of the song!!!! "To veil a swelling tear" She sounds so? I don't know? Crazy, unique, wild, out of control, only Stevie Nicks. I rewind and play that part over and over. Just like in If Anyone Falls: the last time she says "baby I see your shadow against the wall." And of course her growls and wails that she does in a few of her songs. There are great vocal moments in 1979 live album Sara. Nobody sounds like Stevie. Lindsey has a good voice and all, but it's just good. Not amazing! She is one of those voices that is recognizable. Only Stevie sounds like Stevie. She was destined to be heard. Strangled cat? Yea I can see that but it's f*ck*** Rock and roll. Not auto tuned pop

That's funny someone doesn't like that part. I though that all fans would. Have you ever heard a vocal like that? No

PS: I like What's the matter baby. So emotional you can hear the pain in her voice. Her lyrics. Plus Lindsey at the end makes it that much better.

I've told this story before, but I was 13 years old when "Talk To Me" was released in 1985. I heard it on the radio one day and really liked it, but I fell madly in love with that voice the minute Stevie sang "to veil a swelling tear." It was so weird, unique and captivating. After that, I couldn't get enough and I begged for 'Rock A Little' for Christmas.

29 years later, I'm still madly in love with that voice.

I have nothing to say (almost) other than you hit the nail on the head with what I would want to say. Apparently, you know me better than I l know myself. (... can you write this for me?)

When I play an album, I listen to it in its entirety. I've never been able to properly articulate my thoughts about Ghosts are Gone, but you did it for me. It's a good song trapped in production that is overwrought, and as you say, "clangy and brazen."

Thanks! That made me stronger. I'm holding on to me now.

I love these songs! Stevie's vocal on Hard Game To Play always blows me away, especially that part after the bridge where she gets all deep and throaty "Love's a haaaard game to play, ba-bay!"
