I just think 4 days of... anything... is too much. That's like 500 bands. I would probably listen to nothing but NPR for the next two months. I know that after spending just one full day in an art museum, I just can't bear the thought of looking at more pretty things.

But that's not to say that I'm not tempted. Would love to see The Mavericks and Frank Ocean too.

Fleetwood Mac, a group with some experience in internal band politics, makes its Jazz Fest debut in 2013. The band's most recent New Orleans performance was at the New Orleans Arena in June 2009; guitarist Lindsey Buckingham performed a solo show at the French Quarter nightclub One Eyed Jacks in August 2012. The current incarnation of Fleetwood Mac includes Buckingham, drummer Mick Fleetwood, bassist John McVie and vocalist Stevie Nicks, all of whom date to the band's mid-'70s classic period.

They typically don't perform at festivals. But music mogul Irving Azoff, the band's co-manager, attended the 2012 Jazz Fest with another of his clients, the Eagles. Fleetwood Mac's other manager, Howard Kaufman, manages Jazz Fest veteran Jimmy Buffett. Their familiarity with Jazz Fest helped grease the skids for Fleetwood Mac's appearance.

Stevie better make sure all of her white outifts are ready to go. i live in NOLA, and she will have heatstroke if she tries to perform on a May day in the heat and humidity in heavy black layers.

They played Summerfest in Milwaukee for a tour. Normally free but they sold tickets instead. Sold out immediately. This is SO exciting especially to hear the roar of the crowd cheer after what I hope is an inspriational introduction to New Orleans! They have to play it.

They are headlining and will play last. If Stevie can handle the Woodlands Pavilion in Houston in August, she can definitely handle NOLA in May.

More of a challenge is Saturday, May 4’s headlining set, which puts two of the most eagerly anticipated shows of the 2013 fest right up against each other: Fleetwood Mac on Acura versus Frank Ocean at Congo Square. And Sunday, May 5 demands that festgoers choose between old-school and new-school, as Trombone Shorty steps into the prestigious festival closing slot on the Acura Stage, while Aaron Neville takes a solo turn to end the day at Gentilly.

I agree, but also believe they shortened it per the Festival guidelines...looks like LBT leaves stage and there is a 45 min (?) intermission to get the Mac set up.

Yeah, I guess they could take stage at 5:00pm, but with the Mac (fingers crossed) if they are jamming and the crowd is having a blast...I doubt they will end right at 7:00.

So glad nothing was dropped the second night, I think this is a good sign that nothing will be dropped until JF. (and it might even become the NEW setlist) Sorry, folks...I just have that feeling :distress:

But, by my calculations(thay are often wrong) The band is currently on stage a good 2 1/2 hours plus room for talking, intros, encore waiting, etc.

What I am worried about is what Will get cut to fit an hour and 50 mins? Even though Sara is good, I have a feeling it might be one of them. But what else? Some of the longer songs like GDW and So Afraid, World Turning could be shortened, but I don't want them gone.

Any ideas here folks?

7 PM seems so early for a Sat. night noise curfew, especially in NOLA. But you're right, they do run a pretty tight ship during JF. I hope they don't drop anything, but looks like they may have to...and considering it's a festival crowd filled with people who are not just there to see F. Mac, I'm afraid the new ones will be dropped. They MUST keep SOTM, it's got the perfect spookiness that suits NOLA. Or they just say, "screw the curfew, we're playing our full set, send the bill for the fine to our manager."

I have a friend who works for JazzFest so we can get in early...the reason why I camp out at the back of the Acura Stage is because, as you know if you have attended... it is a huge field that fills up fast...I had my ankle rebuilt a few years ago and once the crowd is in place it would be difficult going back and forth over a sea of people to get food or beer/water or to get to the port o lets...by camping in the back I dont have too many bodies to weave around and step over to get back and forth...for Bon Jovi and The Eagles and Tom Petty, the crowd went beyond the actual field and onto the dirt road in front of the port o lets...and even if you are in the back you can see great with the HUGE screens that are in place...I anticipate a huge crowd that day....it would be great to meet some of ya'll that are attending...always love to meet other fans:blob2:

Even tho I don't want anything dropped and I don't really care to hear NO (song) I think it is appropriate and I would welcome it. I'm ecstatic at the thought of horns for Tusk....No way they will drop that one.

In fact I would be totally cool with a full set of Rock/Jazz/Blues set for this show. My secret desire was Chris to join them and play a lot of the old classics, but I will be grateful for what FM delivers.

It was the only time she's performed it live. The audience reaction was so incredibly positive. I have 2 different live recordings of it and was blown away by the audience response she got. It was as if she had just played Landslide or something similar. NO is also my favorite song on IYD. Battle of the BandsFrank vs. Fleetwood vs. Phoenix is no competition at Jazz Fest

Posted: Wednesday, April 24, 2013 Thu Apr 25, 2013, Kaci Yoder

http://www.lsureveille.com/entertainment/music/article_55b25a34-ad55-11e2-b39b-0019bb30f31a.html

As Jazz Fest approaches, the big talk has been the scheduling conflicts among Frank Ocean, Fleetwood Mac and Phoenix, all of whom will take the stage at the same time May 4. Personally, I don’t get what people are so torn up about.

I don’t think I’d be caught dead anywhere but at Frank Ocean’s set, but that’s just me. I realize not every Jazz Fest attendee spent the summer of 2012 listening to “Channel Orange” on repeat for hours and crying into their bathwater over “Bad Religion.” I’m less than neutral on the issue.

I can excuse choosing Fleetwood Mac over Frank Ocean. After all, Fleetwood Mac is classic, and Stevie Nicks is one of those legends who may not be around much longer, so it makes sense some people want to see that show most. I’ll admit I was planning on catching that set before the full schedule was announced, and I was disappointed I’d have to miss it. But I never considered dropping Frank Ocean for it.

Maybe you have a major emotional attachment to Fleetwood. Maybe your mom played “Landslide” for you when you were a kid. Maybe you lost your virginity to “Edge of Seventeen.” I don’t know. I’m not going to begrudge anyone their sentimentality. Go see Fleetwood Mac if it’s important to you. I don’t agree with you, but I understand.

But if you’re one of the people who legitimately wants to see Phoenix when both Frank and Fleetwood are also available, I don’t know what to say to you. I get that some people love Phoenix and have been listening to it since their awkward adolescent days. I get that Phoenix delivers a fun show. A lot of people come to Jazz Fest to chill with friends and listen to music, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

But, really? You have the choice of Rock and Roll Hall of Famers or one of the hottest, most influential rising talents of the past year, and you pick Phoenix? Does it actually bring anything special to the table? No matter how much you love Phoenix, you could catch the band any other time, and the experience would probably be exactly the same. Is that worth missing out on the most powerful set of the festival?

Frank Ocean had not only the best but the most important album of 2012, and while he’s definitely going to be around a while, I doubt there will ever be a more exciting point in his career to catch him live than right now. Just take a minute and imagine the chills that are going to come over the crowd when New Orleans’ most unlikely golden boy strikes up the first notes of “Bad Religion” in his homecoming set. You want to miss that?

I’ll let it slide if you pick Fleetwood over Frank, but Phoenix? I mean, OK. More room at Frank Ocean’s stage. I guess somebody’s got to take one for the team.

I am wondering which songs, if any, are gonna be cut from the setlist next Saturday...FM scheduled from 5:10-7pm...they have been playing almost 2.5 hours at most of the concerts, so with the hour and 50 minute schedule, (unless they go past 7)...am wondering what will be cut?

Scheduling Fleetwood Mac, Phoenix and Frank Ocean all on May 4 may possibly be the cruelest move New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival could make. As much as it breaks the Arcade’s heart to write this, we recommend forgoing the R&B god Frank Ocean and indie rock bliss of Phoenix in favor of Fleetwood Mac. There’s no denying Ocean’s talent, but the soulful musician will be around for a while. Take advantage of the chance to see Fleetwood Mac, a band with farreaching history, play the classic hit “Landslide.” The multiple Grammy award-winning, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee’s 2013 tour marks the 35th anniversary of the release of its legendary album, “Rumours.” The current Fleetwood Mac lineup boasts original members Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, and Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, both of whom joined the band in 1975. In the 2nd half of the Q&A Jaime has posted, Stevie said she suggested it to FM and they declined. So it won't be performed there. She did remind the person asking the question that she has already performed it in New Orleans once, on a solo tour.

Silver Springs already cut in NJ? Hmm...no rhyme or reason to why it was cut as it appeared on their next stop. Perhaps Stevie is exhausted already! I hope not! I had a track listing of opening night down to the minute and seem to of lost track of it. My goal was to predict the List for JF and see what the band will delete/replace into an hour and 50 minutes. This is my prediction:

Second Hand News (- approx. 3:00)
The Chain (+ 5:00)
Dreams (+ 5:00)
Sad Angel (+5:00)
Rhiannon (+7:00)
Not That Funny (+5:00)
Tusk (+6:00)
Sisters of the Moon (+5:00)
Sara (-6.00)
Big Love (+5:00)
Landslide (+5:00)
Never Going Back Again (+2:30)
Without You (+4:00)
Gypsy (+4:00)
Eyes of the World (+4:00)
Gold Dust Woman (+6:00) (shortened version)
I'm So Afraid (+5:00) (shortened version)
Stand Back (+5:00) (shortened version)
Go Your Own Way (+5:00) (shortened version)

World Turning (+5:00) (shortened version)
Don't Stop (+5:00)

Say Goodbye (+3:00)

We have roughly 110 minutes to work with and my calculations are estimated, of course. Based on the calculations, (I know I am off by minutes and seconds) if they shorten the songs towards the end of the show, it leaves them roughly a little more than 8 minutes to talk and band intros, etc.

I think Stevie could ramble on for 8 solid minutes, so this is just mere speculation. I prefer them to shorten songs rather than cut, but I am only 1 fan of many. Who knows, maybe the band will totally surprise us and cut NTF, EOTW, and Stand Back. I'd much prefer them to cut Landslide, Without You, and Don't Stop. :distress: Cheers to wishful dreaming. ;)

@ Fiery Sequences...I think your projection may be spot on!...would rather shortened versions than a total cut of a song...NO NEW ORLEANS...I have been talking to alot of folks who are going and everyone is thinkin' they are gonna bust out New Orleans for the crowd, I better let them know to not hold their breath :(.....also... I was there for Billy Joel Saturday and it was pretty packed....the buzz around the Fest was how it will probabaly be even more crowded on Saturday for FM...

There is no way they are going to shorten/adapt so many songs just for one gig. That requires rehearsal, and they don't really have time to rehearse. They are going to cut, cut, cut songs to fit the allotted timeslot.

"Fleetwood Mac touches down at the New Orleans Jazz Fest for the first time to cap off the "second Saturday" at the Acura Stage. Country combo Little Big Town precedes Stevie Nicks and company, as does the irrepressible Cowboy Mouth. The Gentilly Stage and Congo Square boast headliners of more recent vintage, in Phoenix and New Orleans' latest contemporary R&B star, Frank Ocean, respectively. Smooth jazz vets Stanley Clarke and George Duke team up at the Zatarain's / WWOZ Jazz Test, while Los Lobos settles in at the Blues Tent. And Norah Jones goes quasi-incognito with her country music side project the Little Willies at the Sheraton Fais Do-Do Stage."

Every minute counts at Jazzfest, and the producers apparently saw fit to make some last-minute tweaks to the schedule for the second weekend to allow for the changes. On Saturday, May 4, crowds will get 30 more mintues of Fleetwood Mac than initially planned, and more Aaron Neville on Sunday.

The new Saturday schedule moves Fleetwood Mac's Acura Stage start time up to 4:40 p.m., as opposed to the originally scheduled 5:10 p.m. start time. The change cuts into Little Big Town's time, who will now end at 3:55 p.m. On Sunday, Aaron Neville will start 15 minutes earlier than scheduled on the Gentilly Stage at 5:45 p.m., while Hall & Oates will now start at 3:45 p.m. and finish at 5:15 p.m. Irma Thomas will now start 2 p.m. At the Acura Stage, Trombone Shorty will now start 10 minutes earlier at 5:35 p.m., tweaking all of the other sets that day 5-10 minutes.

I can see maybe Eyes, Say Goodbye, and NTF being cut for Lindsey and Sara, SOTM, and Silver Springs being cut for Stevie.

Also perhaps only one new song cutting either Without You or Sad Angel.

I don't see many songs from Rumours getting cut, which unfortunately would make this show very, very Rumours heavy.

Wouldn't it be neat if Lindsey played in Little Big Town's set as he did several years ago OR if they joined them for "The Chain" or "Go Your Own Way?" I really enjoyed the DVD of his performance with them, and since they are playing it would be neat to see a collaboration again.
Or at least hear a story of how they all met up excitedly and were happy to see each other again!

Jazz Fest 2013 and Fleetwood Mac: Which hit do you want to hear?

Today is the day that I - and thousands of others - have waited for, tickets in hand, with bated breath: it's Fleetwood Mac Day, otherwise known as the second Saturday of New Orleans Jazz Fest,.

First of all, please take note that Fleetwood's performance time has been bumped up to 4:40 p.m. from 5:10 p.m. I can only image how I would feel if I trudged through the mud and crowds only to find that I've missed a half hour of twirling and tambourines.

Second, I'm wondering which hits you're most excited to hear.

Which songs would make your day? I've attempted to narrow my list to five, which you can see and hear below. I've abandoned hope that Christine McVie will appear with the band, so I've excluded any McVie-led tracks. If you can't make the Fest today, all the more reason to hear and share your favorites with other superfans!

Check out my picks and weigh in in the comments!

1. What Makes You Think You're the One - Because: Lindsey Buckingham's ecstatic shredding.

2. Tusk - Because: What if Fleetwood Mac performed with a brass ensemble?

3. That's Alright - Because: This simple, charming, country-fied song is my favorite track from Mirage.

4. Silver Springs - Because: Stevie Nicks' ballad of heartache and otherworldly vengeance would make for a hauntingly beautiful festival interlude.

5. Gypsy - Because: Twirling. Who doesn't want to hear Gypsy?

Many danced as Fleetwood Mac performed such hits as “Dreams,” ‘’Rhiannon,” ‘’Gypsy,” ‘’Tusk” and “Landslide,” which drew huge roars from the crowd when Stevie Nicks introduced it.

Nicks also delivered her tribute to the host city, singing a portion of her song, “New Orleans,” which she said she wrote after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. “I wanna get a room in New Orleans, I wanna sing in the streets of the French Quarter,” she sang.

The band also performed a new song, “Sad Angel,” testing it out with the crowd. Toward the end of their set, they played an old favorite, “Go Your Own Way” at the end of which Buckingham shouted to the crowd, “New Orleans, we love you!”

They left the stage briefly before returning for an encore performance of “The World Keep On Turning,” a song from their self-titled first album released in 1968 and “Don’t Stop.”

So, if you know which album the song came from, why is it you don't know the title of the song? It would take 20 seconds to look it up on Amazon.

Nah, I'll just guess. I hear them saying "World Turning," but that doesn't seem like a long enough title, so I'll just throw in a couple of words. I didn't hear them sing those words, but I think Fleetwood Mac has a song called World Keep on Turning, so this must be it.

so apparently she just sang chorus to New Orleans as she was dedicating Landslide.

thought that maybe since Brett was there who must have done it with her on solo tour and Neale who composed it, maybe the 3 of them at least would have done a snippet.

New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival Sees Performances From Fleetwood Mac, Little Big Town

Huffington Post By CHEVEL JOHNSON 05/04/13

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/04/new-orleans-jazz-and-heritage-festival-fleetwood-mac_n_3215794.html

NEW ORLEANS — Little Big Town says that some networking they did is paying off with a chance to cross a couple of items off their "bucket list."

After playing Bayou Country SuperFest in Baton Rouge last year, group member Karen Fairchild said they talked to festival producer Quint Davis about other things they hoped to accomplish. They mentioned that they'd one day like to perform at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

Davis was in a position to help since he also produces Jazz Fest.

Known for its trademark four-part harmonies, Little Big Town performed in New Orleans on Saturday.

"Can you believe we're opening for Fleetwood Mac?" said Kimberly Schlapman, another group member. "We've been wanting to play Jazz Fest forever and now we're opening for Fleetwood Mac and can mark off two big things from our list."

Schlapman said early in their career they had the chance to meet Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, which she described as an "amazing harmony band."

"Being able to share a stage with them is one of our greatest wishes," she said.

Fairchild said they've watched Jazz Fest from afar for years. "The who's who of music shows up year after year at the festival. Who wouldn't want to play there?"

Flags flying amid a cool breeze, music fans packed the festival grounds by the stage where Little Big Town and Fleetwood Mac performed. Some put down tarps over the muddy infield. Others sat in chairs, wore rubber boots or stood barefoot to hear the bands.

"Once you're in it, it kind of feels good," said Mary Kathryn Gatlin, of Greenville, S.C., who danced shoeless in the mud, the muck covering her feet past the ankles. Gatlin was taking in her first Jazz Fest with her sister, Frances Gatlin.

The pair had been at the stage since noon, about an hour after the gates opened.

"We love country, bluegrass, just easy-listening music that's fun to dance to," Gatlin said.

Many danced as Fleetwood Mac performed such hits as "Dreams," "Rhiannon," "Gypsy," "Tusk" and "Landslide," which drew huge roars from the crowd when Stevie Nicks introduced it.

Nicks also delivered her tribute to the host city, singing a portion of her song, "New Orleans," which she said she wrote after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. "I wanna get a room in New Orleans, I wanna sing in the streets of the French Quarter," she sang.

The band also performed a new song, "Sad Angel," testing it out with the crowd. Toward the end of their set, they played an old favorite, "Go Your Own Way" at the end of which Buckingham shouted to the crowd, "New Orleans, we love you!"

They left the stage briefly before returning for an encore performance of "The World Keep On Turning," a song from their self-titled first album released in 1968 and "Don't Stop."

Other Saturday headliners included Phoenix, Frank Ocean, Los Lobos, Terence Blanchard, Davell Crawford and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Sunshine and blue skies were welcomed by fans of the outdoor festival, which had been drenched by rain in previous days. Despite the mud, the field in front of the festival's largest stage was packed hours before Fleetwood Mac's performance.

Little Big Town's Fairchild said she hoped their festival appearance would help boost their fan base.

"This is a great chance for longtime fans to come out and see our set and a chance for us to discover and be introduced to new fans," she said.

Phillip Sweet and Jimi Westbrook make up the rest of Little Big Town, which recently won two Academy of Country Music awards for their latest album "Tornado." They go on tour with Keith Urban in July.

"I like them," said Monique Powell, of Lafayette. "They've got three big hits out right now, `Tornado,' `Pontoon,' and `Little White Church.' We came in to hear Maroon 5 yesterday. This is just a bonus."

Powell and her friend, Matt Chaisson, also of Lafayette, said Saturday's sunny weather made the trip worthwhile.

"Even though it's nasty out here with all the mud, we're making the best of it," she said, adding that she should have packed her rain boots.

"I should know better," she said, laughing. "I'm from here!"

The festival ends Sunday, with closing performances by Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Aaron Neville, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, and Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra with special guest Dee Dee Bridgewater.

For Fleetwood Mac at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, yesterday isn't gone

Midway through Fleetwood Mac's two-hour-and-20-minute headlining set at the New Orleans Jazz Fest's Acura Stage on Saturday, Stevie Nicks spun a tale about "Without You." Originally a poem, she and then-paramour Lindsey Buckingham recorded it in the early 1970s for their unreleased second duo album. "Without You" faded into the hazy mists of memory until they "rediscovered" the song three years ago on YouTube.

"We loved it, we lost it, we found it," Nicks explained.

She was speaking of the song, but she might well have been describing the arc of Fleetwood Mac's career, one of rock's great success stories and soap operas. Like the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac accounted for one of the best-selling albums of all time, as well as one of the most enduring catalogs in American popular music. Also like the Eagles - and with the additional baggage of multiple intra-band romances - they fractured badly, only to come together again as an older and presumably wiser unit.

Much of the Fair Grounds was still a muddy bog on Saturday, but the weather was picture perfect - clear skies, mild temperatures. Tens of thousands of people filled the Acura Stage field and spilled over the dirt track all the way to the fences.

What they witnessed in the second half of Fleetwood Mac's set was a band that still very much wants to be a band. Nicks, Buckingham, drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie -- Christine McVie, John's ex-wife and the lead singer on several Mac hits, has not toured with them in years -- could have phoned in a greatest-hits recital and called it a day.

But to their credit, they were not afraid to take chances, and their time. Last week, Jazz Fest moved up Fleetwood Mac's start time to 4:40 p.m., giving the band 30 minutes more than originally scheduled. They easily filled them.

The show's early going included classics -- "The Chain," "Dreams," "Rhiannon," "Tusk" -- as well as "Sad Angel," from a new Mac EP. "Every time we go apart and come back together, it's different," Buckingham said. "You'd think a band that's been together as long as us would have nothing new to discover, but there do seem to be a few chapters left in the history of Fleetwood Mac."

History still weighs heavily on them. But now they seem to share the warm camaraderie of veterans who survived a war together. Midway through the show, Nicks and Buckingham were left alone for an intimate duet on "Landslide." Buckingham finger-picked an acoustic guitar as Nicks sang, "I'm getting older." At the song's conclusion, he gallantly kissed her hand.

When Nicks and Buckingham first joined Fleetwood Mac, some fans of the band's first incarnation as a blues-based rock group were horrified, but they provided the necessary ingredients for mass popularity. A couple at the time, they came as a package; Nicks joked that Mick Fleetwood was really only interested in Buckingham's guitar skills.

"The voices, all that stuff was completely secondary," she said. "They just wanted you, let's face it."

Buckingham grinned: "It worked out OK."

At the Fair Grounds, Nicks battled a "New Orleans bug" that was stuck in her throat. "I need some coffee or I'm never going to get through this next song," she said. "If it totally sucks, Lindsey will be singing lead."

The next song was "Gypsy," which would have been an unfortunate choice for Buckingham. Happily, Nicks managed just fine. "Thank you everybody for being so patient," she said. "We're learning to live with that bug."

She accented her black-on-black ensemble -- high-heeled, platform suede boots and, for one song, a top hat -- with sparkling strands and scarves on her microphone stand and a succession of shawls. During "Gold Dust Woman" -- which Fleetwood prefaced with a bass drum and cowbell beat -- she and the band embarked on an extended breakdown. "Baby, baby, baby, you should see me now," she sang. She traced the silhouette of a woman -- a gold dust woman? -- in the air, then turned to face Fleetwood's drum kit, holding her shawl aloft like angel wings.

Buckingham's voice was a bit craggy at points, but his guitar work was consistently aggressive and vital. During a romp late in the set, he ripped off distorted, dirty riffs, high-stepping and stomping across the stage. He pounded the guitar's neck with his fists, and slapped it, producing squalls of sound. Afterward, he tapped a hand to his heart, then blew the crowd a kiss.

The band's auxiliary keyboardist -- there also was a secondary guitarist, and two female backing vocalists -- carried Nicks' solo hit "Stand Back." They went back to the Mac with "Go Your Own Way." It got off to a shaky start; Nicks eyed Buckingham from across the stage, as if trying to get in sync with him. It was all good once the crowd took over the chorus. Buckingham, the bite still in his guitar, ended the song atop Fleetwood's drum riser, whacking a cymbal with his bare hand.

The encore opened with a sturdy "World Keeps On Turning," its churning riff angular and lean. It was a bit late in the day for a drum solo, but Fleetwood took one anyway. "You know it's comin!" he shouted.

Although Christine McVie no longer tours with the band, her signature composition "Don't Stop" does. Buckingham sang the first verse, Nicks the second. "Don't Stop" is about moving beyond grief, about looking toward a brighter day. "Yesterday's gone," they repeated.

Not if you're Fleetwood Mac, it isn't. Yesterday, rediscovered, still sounds pretty great.

So, it seems like both Silver Springs and Say Goodbye were dropped. I wonder if anything else was cut.

I have to say I'm slightly surprised they kept both the "new" songs in, given that they had a presumably limited time to play. I figured those would be the first to go.

i'm counting on many ledgies who were there to give us more info, but from what i've heard from some of them so far, only Silver Springs and Say Goodbye were dropped and they ended with Don't Stop.

and snippet of New Orleans chorus was added (as a dedication?), at the end of which bug flew into Stevie's mouth, which ended up in some funny maneuvering on the stage, if i understood correctly.

Jamie, they just had to shorten the set because they had a preset timeframe that was shorter than their regular set (and they were actually given extra 30 mins from the original time slot).

re preserving their voices, Lindsey has been regularly doing 4 or 5 dates in a row at his last year's solo tour with 1 day off in between...

Jazz Fest Day 6: Fleetwood Mac Still Has Issues

More than 30 years later, they're still working things out onstage.

Posted May 5, 2013

Thankfully, the conditions stopped being a story at Jazz Fest Saturday. Yes, a drainage trench near the Fais Do-Do Stage created an island of the hardcore near the stage while the timid watched from afar, and there were a few boggy no-man's lands, but the track was firm enough that walking didn't require more than casual attention. Thankfully, the music was once again the story starting with Fleetwood Mac, who drew a crowd that was as large if not larger than Bruce Springsteen's, and definitely larger than Bon Jovi's. By Little Big Town's mid-afternoon set, the track was down to one walking lane each way around the Acura Stage, with chairs set up not only in spots with a limited view of the video screen but places with obstructed views. An enclave staked out spots by the Acura Display Tent behind the stage.

The band didn't disappoint. For two and a half hours, they covered most of the hits (I'm sad about the omission of "Seven Wonders"), two songs from the new Extended Play EP, and a handful of album tracks. But the show was more than just an exercise in nostalgia. The songs and the act of performing them clearly still feed something in the members, particularly Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Both clearly still physically feel the drama in their songs, Nicks with signature hand and arm gestures that never felt rote Saturday, and Buckingham with such an intense physical engagement that he was winded after the extreme guitar workout on "I'm So Afraid" from 1975's Fleetwood Mac. He ended a hard, rocking "Not That Funny" from Tusk with an exuberant "Yeah!," and often stomped or froze, hunched over, as if he was working to stop the song's momentum. Nicks complained at times of a bug in her throat, but she gently caressed her songs, while Buckingham's vocals, like his in-song demeanor throughout, threatened melt down or rage out.

There were caricature-ish elements to the set - Nicks' graduated shade a la Jackie Collins, Buckingham's Professor Frink-like "subvert the axiom" speech introducing songs from Tusk - but there were also charming moments such as Nicks doing her version of the Camel Walk in black suede boots to mirror Buckingham's self-absorbed pacing during solos, along with them coming out for the encore holding hands.

The question the show presented is whether the personalities presented on the Acura Stage led to the mayhem that became their personal lives, or if they were a product of it. Whatever the case, the set was more vital than we've been conditioned to expect from reunion tours.

That's a shame. I'd be delighted if New Orleans replaced Stand Back as Stevie's solo contribution to the FM tour set. It works wonderfully live compared to quite a few of her concert staples, actually.

The Advocate by John Wirt, May 5, 2013

Fleetwood Mac draws huge Jazz Fest crowd

NEW ORLEANS — What a difference a day makes. After a Friday of mud, wind and chill, Saturday saw the sun return to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. The temperature rose into the 70s, the mud receded.

The cooperative weather likely helped draw what must have been one of the biggest crowds in Jazz Fest history to classic-rock band Fleetwood Mac’s headlining show at the Acura Stage. The audience maxed out space on the Fair Grounds Race Course infield and bordering racetrack.

Fleetwood Mac singer-guitarist Lindsey Buckingham used his introduction of a newly recorded Fleetwood Mac song to explain the return of the band that’s sold 100 million albums.

It would be easy to assume, Buckingham said, that a group with decades together in the music business would have nothing new to discover. On the contrary, he said, “there seem to be a few more chapters left in the history of Fleetwood Mac.”

The 2013 edition of Fleetwood Mac features four of the five group members who filled its most successful lineup: drummer Mick Fleetwood, bassist John McVie, Buckingham and singing, tambourine-rattling Stevie Nicks.

“We’re so excited to be in your amazing city,” Nicks said after the band opened with “Second Hand News” and the autobiographical “The Chain.”

The band played many of the hits the crowd expected. “Rhiannon,” a Nicks signature song, also came early in the show.

Nicks, always the most visually striking member of the group, wore blonde bangs, oversized tinted glasses that looked very ’60s and one of her witchy black outfits. Later in the show, she donned a top hat for “Go Your Own Way.”

True to Fleetwood Mac history, one of the new songs the band played — released via iTunes last week — was inspired by a disagreement between Buckingham and Nicks. He responded to her reluctance to make a full-length album by writing “Sad Angel.”

“Hello, hello, sad angel,” Buckingham and Nicks sang together on the Acura Stage. “Have you come to fight the war? … The crowd’s calling out for more.”

Nicks and Buckingham took center stage again for “Landslide,” from 1977’s landmark “Rumors” album. The pair performed the song as a duet, with her singing and him playing his finger-picking, multi-voiced acoustic guitar.

Frank Ocean also performed Saturday. He is a New Orleans native whose 2012 album, “Channel Orange,” won a Grammy Award for best urban contemporary album. Another of the day’s Grammy-winning acts, French rock band Phoenix, appeared on the Gentilly Stage.

In this world-famous music festival for which the majority of talent comes from New Orleans, two generations of blues singer-guitarists, Kenny Neal and Jonathon “Boogie” Long, represented Baton Rouge Saturday.

Neal drew a full house to his early afternoon show at the Blues Tent.

“Oh, I’m feeling the blues already!” he told his audience before playing the moody, mid-tempo and ultimately searing “Blues Falling Down Like Rain.”

Neal has been performing at Jazz Fest since the 1970s, beginning with his late singing, harmonica-playing dad, Raful. His band now includes his brother Frederick and nephew Tyree, both playing keyboards, his bassist brother, Darnell, and drummer Bryan Morris.

Always popular at Jazz Fest, Neal’s songs often transcended his genre in the Blues Tent, one example being his inspirational soul ballad, “You Gotta Hurt Before You Heal.”

After his set, Neal posed for photos and greeted dozens of fans, including Jazz Fest attendees from Australia, Germany and France. He also gave an interview to a Slovenian journalist.

Later in the afternoon at the Blues Tent, Long, a 25-year-old star on the rise fresh from a tour with B.B. King, tempered his often rocking, swaggering blues with softer yet still virtuosic guitar interludes.

In an example of the collaborations that happen often at Jazz Fest, rhythm-and-blues and funk masters George Porter Jr. and Joseph “Zigaboo” Modeliste — the bass and drums in the Meters respectively — joined two jazz artists, trumpeter Nicholas Payton and pianist David Torkanowsky, in the local supergroup, Fleur Debris Superband.

Naturally, this supergroup’s selections grooved, but they also turned ethereal and exploratory in, for instance, the band’s rendition of New Orleans jazz maestro Harold Battiste’s “Marzique Dancing.” The Fleur Debris Superband drew an overflow crowd at the Zatarain’s/WWOZ Jazz Tent.

Jazz Fest wraps up Sunday.

JF in a nutshell was horrible. I won't even list the negatives but the highlights of the day were: hearing FM live, the sunshine, the frozen pina coladas, and gumbo with file spice.

Great City, poorly organized event. Even seeing Madonna on our last trip get booed at the Arena beats this trip.

Other highlights from the trip: Caprese pizza from Louisiana Pizza Kitchen, Irish coffee from Cafe Beignet, great jazz band @ same cafe, street musicians on Bourbon, Lafitte's (of course), seeing other parts of the city than the Quarter, parking for free in the Marigny neihborhood and walking to the Quarter, seeing/meeting old friends and locals.

How sad that you had a bad experience - this was my 2nd Jazzfest and I loved it!
Arrived at the Acura Stage before Little Big Town and ended up third person back from the fence dividing the "pass only" pit and mere mortals! Perfect view! I was thrilled that I didn't have to spend the whole day there to hold my spot for FM!
Today was awesome as well! Can't imagine anywhere else where I could roam from stage to stage as desired and be in close enough range tor great sound and at the very worst a view of 2 huge screens. Saw lots of local talent as well as Hall & Oates-Black Keys-Ivan Neville and on and on. Also awesome food! No complaints here - can't wait for next year!

Fleetwood Mac headlined Saturday, the biggest day of Jazz Fest. The first sunny day of the weekend helped, as did the last-hour musical choices: Phoenix, New Orleans-born Frank Ocean, Los Lobos and Fleetwood Mac, who were as physical and relentless as the Black Keys in their own way. Lindsey Buckingham played guitar and sang as if every song was a challenge, and he celebrated the ending a hard, rocking version of "Not That Funny" from Tusk with an emphatic "Yeah!" and a couple of foot stomps. At the conclusion of an extended version of "I'm Not Afraid," complete with a lengthy, aggressive guitar solo, he leaned forward, hands on his knees, to catch his breath.

Their two-and-a-half-hour set was essentially the one the band is playing this tour, including some deep cuts and two from the new Extended Play. Stevie Nicks explained that "Without You," one of the new cuts, was a lost song from the unreleased second Buckingham-Nicks album rediscovered on YouTube, and that Mick Fleetwood and John McVie listened to them for the guitarist.

"I told them they had to take you," Buckingham said.

"Thank you for taking me on the ride," she answered.

In honor of the setting, Nicks performed the chorus to "New Orleans" from her In Your Dreams album, with lines written after Hurricane Katrina. "I wanna sing in the streets of the French Quarter," she sang. " I wanna dress up, I wanna wear beads/I wanna wear feathers and lace/I wanna brush by the vampires."

Are there really a lot of vampires in New Orleans?

Oh yes, they're everywhere.

Are there really a lot of vampires in New Orleans?

The vampires are a reference to Anne Rice's vampire novels, most of which are at least partially based in New Orleans, where Anne Rice herself lived until a few years ago. There are still big vampire parties every year celebrating the books. Anne Rice & her vampire novels definitely have a cult following not unlike Stevie Nicks herself does. Stevie attended the movie screening of the most famous of Anne's vampire novels, Interview With A Vampire, which starred Brad Pitt & Tom Cruise. So that's what all the New Orleans vampire talk is about.

That's so cool, thanks for the info Louie! I've never heard of them (the books) but I understand why Stevie likes Twilight and referenced vampires in New Orleans now.. I still prefer wizards and witches ;)

and snippet of New Orleans chorus was added (as a dedication?), at the end of which bug flew into Stevie's mouth, which ended up in some funny maneuvering on the stage, if i understood correctly.

The bug flew into her mouth as they were closing out "Without You" - that new "ah, ah, ah, ah" part. Suddenly Stevie's voice dropped out and it was just Lindsey singing, while she put her hands to her throat. After the song ended, Stevie explained what happened and then went looking for coffee. While she was gone, Lindsey improvised a tune on his guitar and Mick danced a bit jokingly. When it became apparent it would take a few minutes, Mick sat down at the small drum kit and he and Lindsey began a jam session. Not long after, Stevie returned with her coffee. She declared that if the coffee didn't work, Lindsey would have to sing lead on the next song, which was "Gypsy." He looked aghast but she assured him she was confident he could do it. Now that would've been something! lol

[How dare more people talk about Maroon Five!]

The State of the Listen Music Blog
http://livemusicblog.com/2013/05/07/the-state-of-the-listen-jazz-fest-2013/

Summary

The 44th Annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival drew sizeable crowds this year, despite the rain that kept less ardent fans away. Featuring music, food, crafts, and culture, Jazz Fest falls on the last weekend of April and the first weekend of May each year.

The following data reflects public social media mentions on New Orleans Jazz Fest from April 5 – May 5, 2013. The information was pulled from Radian6, a social media monitoring and analytics platform.

Analysis

In the last year, Jazz Fest goers have turned to social media in greater numbers than in years past – almost doubling the number of mentions about the music festival over 2012. There were noticeably more attendees on Saturday May 4th, as Fleetwood Mac’s performance attracted some of the largest crowds in Jazz Fest history (attendance numbers have not yet been released). However, the classic rock group missed out on the lion’s share of the buzz with Maroon 5 claiming the top place among social media mentions. And although the crowds gathered for Fleetwood Mac were greater in number, it is likely that the younger crowd present for contemporary pop group Maroon 5 was more tech savvy than their older festing compatriots, which could account for the discrepancy in crowd size and the volume of social media buzz.

For the second year in a row, Crawfish Monica and Crawfish Bread were the food items that most people dished about on social media. Crawfish dishes received more mentions from Jazz Festers than many of the top performers. But receiving more buzz than the top food and many key Jazz Fest acts was the weather. Rain played a starring role in Jazz Fest this year, which was reflected in the social media chatter about the festival. Surprisingly, more people posted about the rain at Jazz Fest than the mud, which stuck around much longer. Due to the inclement weather conditions, galoshes (rain boots and shrimp boots) ruled the fest. Many local stores sold out of the types of footwear needed to traverse the festival grounds by the second Saturday of Jazz Fest. Galoshes proved to be a social media star of the festival, receiving more buzz than the top food attractions and many of the musical acts.

Listen, she doesn't drink 'water'. As a matter of fact, the last time she had water was in 2003 when she took a sip of Karen's Fuji to wash down a handful of percocets after a BRUTAL pedicure.

Right! Silly me, I thought water might help more than coffee. That Stevie, she's got her own conversation going on in her head sometimes.

The Nation, by Katelyn Belyus May 10, 2013

http://www.thenation.com/blog/174277/why-does-press-still-take-heritage-foundation-seriously#

I was torn between the two major acts of the night--Fleetwood Mac and Frank Ocean--and I decided on Fleetwood first and Ocean to follow. Of course, FM came out to “The Chain,” and then rolled right into “Dreams,” which, though predictable, did not make it any less awesome. I'm a huge FM fan, but have never seen them live, and I was struck by how effortlessly they come together, even after all these years (or perhaps because of all these years?). And yet they still know how to write solid songs, especially crowd-pleasers, as they revealed with “Sad Angel,” an upbeat song recently released in April that literally asks the crowd to “call out for more.” I danced as best I could, which was no minor feat considering I was up to my ankles in mud, with my boat shoes struggling to stay on my feet. They went into “Rhiannon” and everyone around me-- college guys, hippie gals, parents, kids-- sung along with Stevie, wearing her signature long black sleeves on the hottest day of the weekend. Before going into a few songs off “Tusk,” including the title track and “Sara,” Lindsay Buckingham noted how the album was famously not wanted by record execs but seemed vindicated in its popular appeal that has grown over time. “Time has revealed the reason that was done,” he said about the album before launching into “Not That Funny” and practically shouting at the record label. As they began “Looking Out for Love,” (Buckingham pointed out that he was “defending [love]”), I trudged over to Frank Ocean's stage, my current love whose music I would defend with my life.

You can't actually see the bug fly into Stevie's mouth, but this is when it happened. Somewhere around 2:50, she reaches for her throat, and then she tried to let Lindsey know what happened by mouthing " A BUG ", and then flaps her arms.:laugh::laugh:

Thrills and Chills: A look back at Jazz Fest 2013

Count Basin™ weathered all the highs and lows of an exciting New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. There was everything from Fleetwood Mac's two hour and 20 minute set on the Acura stage to Canadian DJs of A Tribe Called Red shorting out the sound system in the Native American Pavilion with their revved up electric powwow. Days were split between sunny skies and heavy showers, but the mud pits stayed. ***

Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks, clad in black and sky high heels, said she had to get "honest" with her audience during a brief set break: a bug flew in her mouth. "A big, New Orleans bug," she clarified. An at-the-ready John McVie motioned Nicks to a nearby water bottle, but she waved him off: "Can someone get me a coffee?" Her vocals did get a workout, from Rumours classics to "Gypsy" and a few crowd pleasers from Tusk and the new song "Sad Angel" off the recently released EP.

http://timesleader.com/news/WK_Music/510933/CONCERT-REVIEW-New-Orleans-Jazz-Fest-still-a-summer-highlight

For those who did stick it out for their favorite acts, the music did not disappoint. Fleetwood Mac, arguably the headliner of the second weekend, put together a set chockfull of hits, including “Second Hand News,” “Tusk,” “Rhiannon,” an exquisite “Landslide,” which showcased Stevie Nicks' still crisp voice, and a pounding “Go Your Own Way,” which turned into one of the loudest sing-alongs of the weekend. Earlier on Thursday, a reunited Widespread Panic trudged through a rain storm with a fiery set, including “Climb to Safety,” “Blackout Blues,” and a fine take on Traffic's “Dear Mr. Fantasy.”
