Just curious, don't know how many of you guys have listened to it, it's one of my favorite albums ever.

Welcome!

You have great taste. :)

I chose "Crystal". But, I love each of these songs for different reasons.

Long Distance Winner.

Although Races Are Run and Don't Let Me Down Again came pretty close.

Hard to pick a favourite, this album is just so beautifully written and performed. I'm going with Frozen Love though as it shows the raw talent of both Stevie and Lindsey and still sounds great today.

While Crystal's lyrics are brilliant to the point of sadness (shippers holla), I have to go with Frozen Love. That Lindsey guitar solo... wow.

i really dislike most of these songs. mainly i can't stand that style of singing and harmonies.

i do like WALTSO, Django, Crystal and Stephanie.

i would enjoy the guitar solo in FL if i could make it to it through annoying harmonies.

This is the hardest poll ever!

I chose Frozen Love because I listen to it the most.

That being said, I always blast Long Distance Winner - those notes she hits with the first "tallest trees" is amazing and gives me chills!

Seriously, I cannot gush about this album more - I think I've listened to this album front to back more times than any FM album... :o

I love classic rock, but I'm much more of a folk/singer-songwriter type girl - Bread, America, Carole King, James Taylor (give me some acoustic guitar and killer harmonies, I'm a happy camper :) )

Crying in the Night is also a personal fav!

Of course, both instrumentals are gorgeous! :blob2:

EDIT: I also think this version of Crystal is better than the FM version - sorry! Okay, fan girl rant over :)

This is tough because there really are 5+ songs that to me are about equally solid. I'm not sure there is a "great" song in the batch, but a lot of A- type songs, and that makes it very hard to choose.

I chose Cryin' because (most people will pick Frozen Love) and Cryin' really starts off the album well, and sets the tone. Great early 70's California sound, if you are in the mood for that kinda thing. For what it is, it's a gem.

Gotta be my favorite album ever, there's not a single song I dislike. Favs have got to be Frozen Love (of course), LDW, Crystal, and Races Are Run. Seriously this album is perfection.

"Don't Let Me Down Again"...the closest thing to a "rocker" on the album.

This is hard because I love them all.

But I'm gonna go with Don't Let Me Down Again. That's kind of arbitrary thought because I love most of them the same and then there's like 2 that I don't love quite as much (Races Are Run and Lola) but I still do love.

It's funny when you stop listening to Fleetwood Mac for some time, or stop obsessing about the members, you really see the songs that had the most impact on you.
And therefore i'd say Stephanie, because i still get emotional when i listen to it. A close second would be Long Distance Winner, and then of course Crystal, and Without a leg to stand on.

I remember how i adored Frozen Love, and though i still think it's a well-crafted song, it doesn't really touch me which is rare for a song where Stevie's involved.

the only problem with that set was that it was too short.

It was a difficult choice, but I went with Stephanie. That song brings goose bumps to my skin, and tears to my eyes! The melody feels like dancing, like twirling until you're dizzy and stumbling, just to get back up with a laugh.

Having said that, my close second was of course Crystal. ;)

I finished the album. Here are my thoughts "live" as I was listening...

Crying in the Night - Stevie, excellent vocals
Stephanie - instrumental, okay
Without a Leg to Stand on - odd vocals; who's singing?; lotta acoustic guitar!
Crystal - not as soft/lush as FM version; Lindsey vocals w/Stevie on chorus; FM version better
Long Distance Winner - quirky rhythm; can't understand the words; similiar sound to Frozen Love; nice guitar solo
Don't Let Me Down Again - Second hand news meets World Turning; vocals mixed too far back; cool instrumental break; I picture Christine playing the maracas; I played my pack of Eclipse gum!
Django - another instrumental, two on the same record? kinda western sounding
Races are Run - awe how sweet/precious is Stevie; instrumental break; excellent vocals/harmonies
Lola My Love - what the heck is this!!; interesting/quirky rhythm; what key is lindsey singing this in its so low
Frozen Love - turn that volume up lets wake the neighbors!; hey I sound pretty good singing with 'em; instrumental break strings/guitar; excellent drums/vocals; nice duet

Overall a good album. There voices changed alot for the '75 white album. Not enough drums and bass for me though. my favorite is Frozen Love.

 I love your breakdown of the album. Especially your reaction to Lola hehe - when I first heard that I was taken aback too, but I really enjoy it now :) As for Long Distance Winner, look up the words, they are very Stevie and I like them a lot (I couldn't understand them so well on first listen too). I disagree with you about Crystal, like I said before, I love this version much better, primarily because I love the harmonies - the FM version is too soft for me.

Everytime I listen to this album it does frustrate me some because I just can't understand why that didn't take off! It's just some of their best work imho. I'm not over it yet lol - maybe when I reach their age I'll accept what is ;) maybe... :p

Totally agree. This version of Crystal is way better than FM imo.

True. But, it was starting to gain momentum. It just took a while, and unfortunately Polydor had already dropped them.

Funny some of the comments to me about BN. Nothing has really changed that much in their sound, style, harmonies, writing, or singing - except they sing in lower registers now. :) This simply showcased their talents to the industry and gave them a bigger platform which gave them an even greater platform with FM.

you know, i always wondered what changed so drastically, but to me their sound was shrill and empty - needed more instrumentation or something, Stevie's voice was not disciplined enough and was screechy, and you already know i don't think much of Lindsey's young voice, however huge range he may have had at the time - and much folksier on BN. yes there were flashes that there might be something there, but it needed honing. Lindsey was nowhere near reaching his writing groove yet, he just started. so i'm confused when you say "nothing has changed".

gets me back to our discussion of Lindsey's Soundstage - i really wanted to love that release b/c so many songs that i adore are on it, but many of them sound monotone and empty - there's lack of additional instrumentation, fuller harmonies, something... great examples of that are Rodeo and SYHA on there. those 2 songs are gorgeous sounding on both studio versions (GOS1 and SYW) or when Lindsey would do them completely solo, but these in-between versions just don't work for me. i do understand that Soundstage was put together in the midst of FM tour, unbelievably fast, and it had so many never before performed or released songs, so it's impressive they could pull it together and i'm glad he put it out... but still, that release didn't do all these songs justice.

Granted, they weren't at their peak - but that's something that could be debated. When did they peak - and I mean that from more of a working together thing, not individually. Some may say FM, some Rumours. Or would it be weighed on specific songs. I don't think much changed. The instrumentation -- they added a keyboard and got a better drummer and bass player? As for their voices, I don't necessarily believe it was the change in their voices as much as it could have been how their voices were being recorded or the equipment being used. Did the writing improve? I suppose, but I think the writing on BN holds up just as good. Naturally, as they matured their writing did as well and also as their influences expanded. But, for the most part any change is not so drastic that it causes them to be unrecognizable in this original form -- the style, licks, phrasing -- it's all there.

Dang it elle, don't make me pull that thing out again!! LOL.

well it is an eye candy, i'll give you that... so probably wouldn't be that hard to re-watch it. ;)

you know, when i first decided to check out Lindsey with and without FM, Soundstage and the very best of FM were 2 releases i bought. the very best b/c i figured it has a variety of mac stuff throughout the years so i can see whether i like them in general (not talking about PG mac which i knew i liked). Soundstage b/c i looked through different periods on youtube and concluded that era was when LB looked by far the best, so if i would't like what i'm hearing, at least it wouldn't be a complete waste of money and time b/c i could just enjoy what i'm seeing. ;)

but you know how much i love GOS1 and some of the main songs from that bootleg are on Soundstage, and they didn't grab me there at all. while since the first time i heard GOS1 bootleg i thought that might be my favorite album anybody ever made. so obviously something is missing on Soundstage, and eye candy alone didn't do it for me.

actually the first complete LB release i heard was Bass recording on rhapsody, and many of those songs just sounded too dark to me when i first heard them. that's why i didn't buy UTS forever, b/c i thought i didn't like those songs, and was actually pleasantly surprised when i finally listened to the the whole album, although still not nearly my favorite album of his.

his solo live arrangements and recordings definitely improved since 2004 - Small Machine is great, arrangements are full and performance is inspired, plus there's amazing selection of SWS material.

This is a good time to revive this thread. I didn't vote, I don't remember why, I probably didn't have the album back then. Now I have it, digital format only 256 kbps, but with very good sound quality. I don't remember how I got it, but I'm sure I didn't buy it. Someone here must have shared it with me. So if they re-release it, I would just buy bonus tracks if they included them.

I would have voted for Don't Let Me Down Again, although LDW and CITN are very close.

I'm just listening Stephanie and thinking... mmm, this could be too.

Mixing these two with the brits was the best route for everyone.

You're from Pittsburgh, right? Do you remember in the early and mid 80s WDVE's electric lunch would sometimes play Don't Let Me Down Again and Frozen Love. It was a real treat and I always turned it on too late to record the full song so I would only have partial songs on my cassette tape. It was like a unicorn to record a song from Buckingham Nicks. Stevie said her dad's favorite song was Don't Let Me Down again. John McVie loved Crystal so much that it was his pressure to put it on Fleetwood Mac. Frozen Love is probably my favorite. I wonder if history would have changed if another song from the album was played instead of Frozen Love when Mick heard it. Frozen Love does demonstrate Lindsey's intricate playing.

"partial songs on my cassette tape" made me laugh, yeesh, that describes all my early 8os mix tapes! and then of course we have the inevitable song cut-off when the tapes reached the end of side A or B...

Yep that is the way we rolled in the 1980s. I always heard the end of Frozen Love, Silver Springs, or Don't Let Me Down Again (these elusive unicorns) on the radio. By the time I found a cassette to record on I had to either rewind or fast forward past the songs I did not want to record over so I always just ended up with about 50 seconds of the song
We are the same age so you know the pain!

The liner notes for the deluxe edition of the White Album mention that Keith Olsen played more than one song for Fleetwood during his visit. Here's the quote from Fleetwood:

"That hour and a half spent in Sound City changed everything. I think Keith Olsen played me 'Frozen Love', 'Crying in the Night", and 'Crystal' - which we ended up re-cutting for Fleetwood Mac. I do not believe I heard the whole album (referring to Buckingham Nicks).

Wow that was really good. Thanks for sharing!

I agree! What a voice!

I like how she kept the same arrangement.

By the time I found a cassette to record on I had to either rewind or fast forward past the songs I did not want to record over so I always just ended up with about 50 seconds of the song
We are the same age so you know the pain!

I was doing the same through the late 90s!

There was actually a 1977 disco version of 'Don't Let Me Down Again' by Canadian singer Shirley Eikhard (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirley_Eikhard).

Interestingly, Shirley Eikhard also covered "Say You Love Me", which was actually released as a single in Canada before the original recording by Fleetwood Mac. At one point, both versions were actively competing with each other on the charts. On the August 28, 1976 chart (https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/films-videos-sound-recordings/rpm/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=7419&), Fleetwood Mac's version jumped up from #69 to #55, surpassing Eikhard's version in the process, which dropped from #45 to #58.

Fleetwood Mac's "Say You Love Me" performed considerably worse in Canada compared to the other singles from the White Album ("Over My Head: peak position of #9; "Rhiannon": peak position of #4; "Say You Love Me": peak position of #29). It's pretty likely that the moderate chart success of Eikhard's version (peaked at #34) tempered the chart run of Fleetwood Mac's original.

Wow. Wait. Say You Love Me was covered and released by another artist before Fleetwood Mac? How did that happen?
Anyway here it is. Not too shabby.

Fleetwood Mac's "Say You Love Me" had already been on the White Album for roughly one year before it was released as a single.

Timeline:
July 1975: The White Album is released, which includes "Say You Love Me"

June 1976: Eikhard's version begins to appear on the Singles Chart

July 1976: Fleetwood Mac's version begins to appear on the Singles Chart

And it wasn’t covered by just anyone. Shirley Eikhard is a great songwriter herself. She is best known for penning “Something to Talk About,” which Bonnie Raitt made famous in the early 90s.

I was going to ask How did the band allow that? I mean, at that time Fleetwood Mac was re emerging as a popular band so any "interference" could have been harmful for their popularity. There have been better covers (specially according to the public) than the original. Close to You, What's Love Got To Do It, Nothing Compares 2 U, etc.

On the other hand, it could help to impulse the band songs, but it was a risky move. Anyway, my doubt was, she needed the band permission, didn't she? Or just the record company? Or just Christine (and BN in the case of DLMDA)?

How the heck have I have a been a fan of this band for 25 years (a good 15 of those years practically a fanatic!) and i'm just learning about this now. Mind blown.
