Lindsey Buckingham: 'I Would Love to Do' a New Fleetwood Mac Album
Singer-guitarist talks possible studio reunion and his solo tourComment2By Steve Baltin
November 2, 2012 3:05 PM ET
Lindsey Buckingham performs in Orlando, Florida.Gerardo Mora/Getty Images for VEVOLindsey Buckingham hasn't always felt comfortable balancing Fleetwood Mac with his individual releases. "There was a period of time where there was a level of frustration because the Fleetwood Mac agenda seemed to loom a lot larger . . . I would try to put together material [for] a solo album and there would be some kind of intervention," he tells Rolling Stone, laughing at the last part. "If you are gonna participate in a band, you've got to be a band member in good standing, and you've got to think about the needs of the whole."
The past few years have been kinder to the singer-guitarist's solo wanderlust. Following the release of Fleetwood Mac's last album, 2003's Say You Will, Buckingham requested time off from the folk greats to work on music alone and released an album, Seeds We Sow, last year. This month, he concludes a solo acoustic tour and digitally releases a live album on November 13th. (Rolling Stone will premiere one cut, Fleetwood Mac's "Big Love," next week.) After that, he will return to the Fleetwood fold for the band's massive 2013 tour.
"[In] the last eight or nine years, I've had a lot of growth. I sort of caught up on the need to explore the more esoteric side of the palette," Buckingham explains. "Fleetwood Mac is gonna start rehearsing probably the beginning of February and I'm actually looking forward to it. I miss those guys."
Buckingham is also interested in recording with the band again, a project he says is on the "back burner" for now but not overruled. "Absolutely, absolutely I would," he says of creating a new album. "In fact, about six, seven months ago, John [McVie] and Mick [Fleetwood] were over here and we actually cut some tracks, and we did enough for maybe half an album. But you gotta get Stevie [Nicks] on board with that, and at the time, she was really quite caught up in what she was doing . . . but I would love to do that because John and Mick were playing their asses off."
Still, his band's famously contentious dynamic has left Buckingham with a sense of humor, not to mention an appreciation for other argumentative artists. "Sometimes I wish we were the Eagles. That's one thing they've always been able to do is want the same thing for the same reasons," Buckhingham says with a dry laugh. "They probably don't share the same sensibilities as people and they may not spend much time together, but somehow they're able to put that aside and get on with the business of doing business, and there's something to be said for that."

It's great to hearing Lindsey so positive when speaking of Fleetwood Mac & it's prospects. Unfortunately, Stevie totally shut down the idea of recording with Fleetwood Mac last month when asked point blank at her Documentary Q&A in New York. She pretty much said she never wants to record with Fleetwood Mac again because she's getting old & her time is limited, and that she will likely record a new solo album when this upcoming Fleetwood Mac tour is done. Perhaps she'll have a great time touring next year & change her mind, but I'm not holding out hope for that. In any event, I hope Mick, John, and Lindsey release something new... I don't care under what name. If they're having a good time making great music, I'd love to hear it.
So true.... At this point as much as I would like a new Fleetwood Mac album, I will take any new music within any form. I think Buckingham /Nicks will release the CD next year. I love that I got so much new music from Buckingham and Nicks the last 11 years. As a fan since from the 70's who would've thought. I will take it any way I can get from these guys. Sorry Chris isn't in the fold.

Aww! I love his positive attitude! So cool that they cut some new tracks! :blob2: Maybe they can get her to change her mind  :xoxo: Never say never ;) Even if it's an EP, I'd be cool with that.

I agree, for any number of reasons...probably because Christine is retired, The Mac is not a happy place for her. She deserves to spend her golden years however she wants. It's been great to see her so happy and excited about her life. Let the guys do whatever they want. I can't see what Mick 's guilt trips accomplish except damage to their friendships. Let the guys be guys and relish in their testosterone and rock it out. Let Mama make us a new solo record with China Doll on it.....:o

FM album with Stevie or Men of Mac album without Stevie won't make much money for them anyway, so why not just give us a great Men of Mac album?

Hi! Nice to read this!! Thanks elle for share
Well, I don't know about Stevie. Why she doesn't accept to record a new album when she's going to tour with FM??
I don't know the problems behind, but I think she should not be too far from accept to record with the rest.
And if the new album is only with Mick, John and Lindsey...well, obviously I'm going to listen it, but you know, FM was always a band of four members or more. Only three sounds new, strange and rare for me...
In that case, why not just get a new singer?
:laugh: i don't know whether you noticed this, but i think that curly-haired guy can sing and sounds better than ever these days? :p :D
i'd absolutely hate it if they would get a new girl (i assume that's what you mean?) singer. they wouldn't do it anyway.

hmm, that actually sounds even more interesting than i initially thought! i'd just enjoy to hear the sound of Lindsey with John and Mick backing him. his songs on GOS with John and Mick had great and full sound!

It's so funny how a thread, article and a quote from Lindsey turns to Stevie. Gotta love the Ledge...
Anywho, I'm glad Lindsey wants to do another Mac album and since he, Mick, and John already cut several tracks(in demo form I suppose), that is a positive step forward. Plus the new tour!
If Stevie doesn't want to record - I hope she changes her mind - FM could recruit another singer or singers. Although Lindsey can surely handle the vocals by himself, Fleetwood Mac has always had at least two vocalists. Fleetwood Mac with just one vocalist, regardless of who that person is, just isn't Fleetwood Mac.

from all their recent statements, i don't think Lindsey, Mick and John are considering anybody else but Stevie. i'm surprised so many here do... of course that's the [ancient] history of FM - replace people who left.

Well, she IS the one who said that she wouldn't be the one to break the band up. If things aren't being done because she doesn't want to anymore, but everybody else is on board, then isn't she basically breaking the band up? My attitude is if she doesn't want to be in the band anymore, well, there's the door.

Not that idea again please...remember that talk a while back. At this point I don't think adding another singer or band members without Stevie would be acceptable. I think the Rumours line-up is just too iconic as Fleetwood Mac. Pretty much everyone, fan or not, that has lived through the last few decades are at least familiar with the members of Fleetwood Mac and expect that classic sound and harmonies(and how beautiful they are with LB SN CM).
Although I think FM were able to continue successfully when Lindsey left after Tango, the same was not so true when Lindsey, Stevie and Chris were absent from the "Time" era touring. That album was decent and I attended several shows which were enjoyable but to the casual fan it was not Fleetwood Mac in their minds.
If the Mac was to continue without the current vocalist maybe a name change would be appropriate? That "Men of Mac" has a nice sound to it...
With the upcoming tour I believe Stevie will contribute to one last Mac album or EP. At any rate I'm glad my childhood heroes of the 70's are still performing and making great music no matter what name or label it comes under.

Broken record that I am, I think they should take those already-cut tracks and fly to London, work with Christine, and then Stevie can join them when she's ready. That would be simply smashing. And the resulting album would be killer. But then they couldn't do their make money tour.
Love the Mac but so many of the band decisions have been motivated by money that it's hard not to be frustrated with them. All that artistic potential! They have at least one more amazing studio album in them but are either too stubborn or too greedy to make it happen.

If they did that, then Stevie would be ready immediately. That's the thing. She wouldn't even stop to grab her shawl before jumping on a plane. I always say, if someone wants to get her interested in recording with FM, that would be the way to do it.

but, but... didn't she burn her bridges? ;):D:laugh:
honestly, nobody would probably even have to fly anywhere - she could just send them a few tracks electronically and they can maybe work back and forth while on tour or right before the tour starts next year... and meet up when they are in Europe to polish as needed.:D
as a Lindsey fan though, i can't complain much about SN not wanting to play with FM boys at the beginning of 2012 - as a result of her refusal we got a one-man solo tour that lasted from june through november, plus a new live album. so Lindsey made the best of that change in plans and by all signs had a lot of fun along the way! :xoxo::thumbsup:
plus when you think about it, Lindsey, Mick and John must have been working pretty fast, cutting these tracks in what? maybe less than a month? so that's a nice change from the previous snail FM recording pace.

It took Stevie one year to record IYD. Three years to record TISL. Three years to record SA. Two years for RAL. BD and TOSOTM were made fairly quickly.
Maybe it is Stevie who holds up the recording sessions for long periods of time and not the rest of FM while searching for perfection.

I totally agree. Christine or any Rumours lineup member is just irreplaceable. Fleetwood Mac is a legendary band. I can't imagine Pink Floyd with another singer replacing Roger Waters, or Beatles with a Lennon replacement (I mean in 1995 when they released the anthology and all those tv specials, with Free as a Bird single), or even Bee Gees when Maurice passed away. Is not viable anymore.

Photo: PA Lindsey Buckingham has admitted that he "would love" to record a new Fleetwood Mac album.
Earlier this month, the iconic band ended months of speculation by confirming that they would embark on a reunion tour next April, while singer Stevie Nicks also hinted that they could return to the studio.
Now, in an interview with Rolling Stone, Buckingham said that he was keen to work new material with his old bandmates – although he did add that any recording plans were currently on the "back burner".
Asked if he was interested in recording a new studio album, he replied: "Absolutely, absolutely I would. In fact, about six, seven months ago, John [McVie] and Mick [Fleetwood] were over here and we actually cut some tracks, and we did enough for maybe half an album.
"But you gotta get Stevie on board with that, and at the time, she was really quite caught up in what she was doing," he added. "But I would love to do that because John and Mick were playing their asses off."
Talking about next year's reunion shows, meanwhile, he said: "The last eight or nine years, I've had a lot of growth. I sort of caught up on the need to explore the more esoteric side of the palette. Fleetwood Mac is gonna start rehearsing probably the beginning of February and I'm actually looking forward to it. I miss those guys."
Fleetwood Mac are one of a number of names rumoured to be headlining Glastonbury when the festival returns. Speaking to NME about the rumours, festival organiser Emily Eavis said: "I think Fleetwood Mac would be amazing to get, I'll be totally honest we haven't had any conversations with them yet but, you know, it is still early days. We're just talking to some headliners now. For us it's about getting the balance of heritage bands, legends and new bands – just keeping that balance."

Lindsey Buckingham would “Love to make a new Fleetwood Mac album”
November 3, 2012
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham has stated that he “would love” to start recording new material with the beloved group.
With a reunion tour in April already confirmed, Mac are the latest iconic band, along with The Stone Roses and Blur, to embark on a reunion tour during 2013 and follow it up with speculation of new material.
When asked if he was into the idea of recording new music Buckingham said, “Absolutely, absolutely I would. In fact, about six, seven months ago, John and Mick were over here and we actually cut some tracks” and continued “But you gotta get Stevie on board with that, and at the time, she was really quite caught up in what she was doing”.
There are also rumours of a headline spot at Glastonbury when it returns this summer which, along with the other names rumoured to get the top spot at the festival, should spell an amazing weekend whatever the outcome.
If everything works out for the best then we could finally be seeing one of the most iconic bands in popular music back on the scene. However, if recent examples are anything to go by we may have to pay an arm and a leg to go and see them…

Man, I really wish Stevie would be a team player again. She doesn't even have to do that much. She could just dig some demos up, send them to the guys, then show up when it's time to sing. I'd rather she be more involved in the process, but at least that would be better than nothing. With all the talk about drama, sometimes I wonder if she isn't just refusing out of pettiness.

 yes. and then she can proceed complaining after everything is done that she didn't like the process or how her songs ended up sounding but she just couldn't tell Lindsey at the time they were actually working on the album because she "didn't wanna hurt his feelings":angel:

I would love a new Mac album but Stevie seems to really want her solo career props. I think her mothers death has made her face her own mortality. As much as I hate to think about it, she really doesn't have a lot of time. A year and a half world Mac Tour, Bam ...she 's 67. She worked her ass off bouncing between her solo and Mac career....she wants into the songwriters hall of fame, R&R HOF as a solo artist....Is there enough time to get Buckingham Nicks re-released, a few new Mac songs/album, and a solo record...? Something is going to hav't to give, right....

see, the way i look at it, there's enough time if one wants to do it and are inspired. don't blame everybody else or not enough time - those are only excuses - either you want to do it or you don't.
new Mac music can be done before this upcoming tour (there is 6 months till then still!) and promoted with this tour, and maybe come out some time in the middle of the tour - so that would not add any extra time to already carved out time for Mac, right? and how great would that be - didn't i read for months everybody here complaining how this tour will be same old and not promoting any new songs?
but you can't do any of that if you take your time with everything (even if you claim you are working your ass off lol).

I agree with everything you just said!
I believe every album before Rumours was recorded in less that a year. Beginning with Rumours, Mac albums seemed to be more spaced apart and took over a year to complete. Perhaps the Mac experts could verify what I just wrote...:D
My point being - they should be able to get a full-album out by November 2013 using the upcoming tour and special appearances/performances after the release date, to promote the Album XYZ.

Sure couldn't hurt.
I don't need Madame Nicks to join Fleetwood Mac ever again. The Dave Stewart + Stevie Nicks recording "Annabel Lee" is a classic sound: it out-Fleetwood Macs Fleetwood Mac. I know Mick's the drummer for the track, so that helped. But he does his most '70s-style drumming in decades for Dave.
Also, wouldn't it be fun to see a Clifford Davis-style fake-band fiasco once again? We could all go see Fleetwood Mac next year with a stage filled with imposters!

I think it would be selfish for any member of the band to "hold up" the potential of another (final) Fleetwood Mac album. Pretty much everyone who's been in the Fleetwood Mac owes their success in the business having been a member of it. I've said many times that nothing life is guaranteed. A year ago, we could talk about Bob Welch rejoining the band and now he's no longer around. If Stevie isn't interested in making another (final) FM album then leave her out of it. However it should not stop the band from having one final hurrah before everyone truly parts ways.
If things went my way, the final incarnation for the final Fleetwood Mac album and tour would be Lindsey, Rick, Billy, Bekka, John and Mick. What a fantastic sound that lineup would have. Further, I think everyone would have fun with one another and the band can go out on a high and positive note.
Even if you disagree with me in regards to who should be in the band, I think we can all agree that it would be nice to have one last album/tour. It would be a shame for the opportunity to slip by and look back 20 years from now and be disappointed that the band just faded into the ether instead of going out with a bang.

Yeah, Stevie shouldn't be holding the Mac back. That said, I don't want her to rush tracks out ala SYW (for some of the tracks she did, anyway) and regret the product and the process later. If the 2013 tour goes well, which it almost surely will, maybe they can look at it again later next year. No rush, they're making the music of their lives between the 4 of them. Once Stevie gets done wit hthis solo/IYD phase, it'll be on the cards again.
Time will tell, but hopefully SYW and maybe a belated EP isn't what we end on.

A "Fleetwood Mac" without Stevie would be a Lindsey Buckingham solo album with a cool rhythm section. It would be a joke to include it in the FM canon, and appalling for it to go down as the so-called "band's" final effort. I think the guys realize that.
I hesitated to say it before Elle's post, but perhaps Stevie's unhappiness with how her demos were produced in 2003 is why she doesn't do it again this time. (I understand why she would be upset at his butchery of "Smile at You" but I thought he did well otherwise, so I was surprised by the harshness of her criticism later.) Although I'm kind of sick of Dave Stewart always hovering about lately, perhaps he could be allowed to coproduce to assuage Stevie's fears.
Ideally, she'd work with Lindsey during the process herself, but she says it causes too much drama to do so. Yet, it seems LB is definitely willing to accommodate her. That's why I wonder if she is punishing him for something by refusing.

I hate to be harsh, but the line-up you're suggesting would very definitely be the band fading into the ether. A guaranteed bang would be to have the Rumours 5 do something, but the current foursome could probably do it too if they put some real effort into it.

The way I see it, if Stevie doesn't want to do it, we should respect her choice just as we respect Christine's. Stevie has given a lot to the band, if she wants to be done, so be it. The guys can record without her. (And actually, I don't think Stevie would want to be left out of what would most certainly be the band's last album. If they started making one in 2014, I bet she would join them.)
The way I see it, is Stevie doesn't want to do it, we should respect her choice just as we respect Christine's. Stevie has given a lot to the band, if she wants to be done, so be it. The guys can record without her. (And actually, I don't think Stevie would want to be left out of what would most certainly be the band's last album. 2014?!?!?!?!? they already started making one in 2012 - what reason would they have postpone it for 2 whole years??

Seems to me, after listening to all of Stevie's comments about the making of IYD in promoting it and then again recently when promoting the documentary of it, that she really liked that the making of the album became this whole lifestyle thing. She liked that she and everyone else were basically just living this album 24 hrs/day in that big house. Maybe at this stage other members of Mac, due to marriage and children commitments etc, aren't able or willing to just let an album consume 24 hrs a day and instead approach it in a more business-like (to Stevie anyway) fashion-- come in for a few hours, work some tracks, then leave and live the other parts of your life and come back tomorrow.
Interestingly at one of the Q&A sessions at a film festival recently (the video is posted in the Stevie forum) she talks about how she doesn't have a husband or kids and so she gets lonely. She said she had her mom but now her mom is gone and she is lonely. All speculation on my part but it just seems like she wants (and maybe has always wanted) the making of albums to be this sort of alternate universe she can move into full time with a sort of surrogate family and the others have a bit more practical approach because they actually do have families. Not sure if that can be rectified..... A shame though, because like others have already said here, none of them is getting any younger and how much time realistically do they have to crank out more albums??

hmm, guess i'm generalizing my own wishes .
or maybe those are wishes of Lindsey fans who are not also Stevie fans and are barely FM fans?
so what would you all like him to do in 2014?
speaking for myself only, i'd absolutely hate it if he would spend the whole 2014 working on FM album instead of putting out twice as much of his new music or touring and putting out live stuff, probably in half the time he'd spend working on the Mac. :distress: and then after FM album he'd go touring with FM once again?! so we'd loose him for the whole 2013, 2014 and 2015?? :distress::distress::distress::distress::distress:
so if FM is doing a new album, i wish they'd do it fast, and put it out in 2013 during the tour. so that all FM stuff is done by the end of 2013, or possibly first half of 2014.
^^ that all said, i don't think anybody can deny that all the years of postponing FM album have worked great for people who love Lindsey's music:
2010 - the idea was for FM to go into studio and record a new album after 2009 UL tour - that didn't happen b/c SN was working on IYD the whole 2010 instead. so since the "time opened up" LB decided to "fill it" and that's how by the end of 2010 he was done with SWS.
2011 - we got Saban in April and SWS studio album, tour, and Small Machine Live in LA CD and DVD
2012 - 3 of 4 FM members were apparently hoping to record an album and recorded 8 tracks at the beginning of the year. SN wanted to tour with RS and promote IYD some more while trying to wrap up the IYD movie. so since some time once again opened up, LB embarked on a one-man solo tour which proved probably one of the best things he's ever done for his solo artist reputation, toured from the beginning of May through the end of November, and is now releasing a live album of his one-man tour.
so while SN spent 2010-2012 working on IYD album and movie and touring those, LB put out a studio album, toured the album with a band, then embarked on a one-man solo tour, and released 2 live albums plus DVD. so it seems if SN is about to hold off on a FM album for the next 5 or so years, we could get bunch more stuff out of LB! :p :]
EDIT: just occurred to me that i omitted something that happened probably some time at the beginning of 2011 and may have been the undertone and in the background of all this productivity - LB has gone indie and started his own label. i may be completely off base and speculating, but it seems this move gave him lots of freedom to do what he wanted instead of what someone else was telling him to do in order to fulfill some bottom line.

I don't think Stevie is against recording a new Mac record, she just isn't ready to commit to something so big. When they were ready to record she still wanted to promote IYD. She admits to "holding them up" and them "not being very happy about it" and that she told them she'd see them in 2013. I think after that a tour began to get lined up and they realized that there wouldn't really be enough time to record a record. I think after the tour next year, if everyone is free and the tour goes well then she may be willing to hit the studio with them. Or perhaps they will tour the US and then do some recording before they go overseas. However, if she is tired of FM by then and doesn't record then at least she only has to spend 2013 doing that and then she can go back to her solo career.

But I don't think Stevie had fun making any FM albums after Rumours. She seemed to enjoy the condo with Christine back then, even though they were both fighting with their men. Next album, they were closeted up together for 13 months with Tusk and she hated it. Ayatollah (Lindsey's answer to that charge was that he couldn't have been treating her like a hostage, since she was not even around most of the time).
Of course, as someone pointed out recently, we don't know how the Mirage recording process went. It might have been something she enjoyed because it was around 1982 where she was saying that she and Lindsey could easily get back together -- but she knew if they did they would only break up again. So maybe they had some good moments during that recording process. Michele

Neither did SYW for that matter. She gave us a schedule for that. I don't remember what it was but she told us both when SHE got to the studio and left and when Lindsey did. It was not a whole day process that she outlined.
The way Ken described Rumours, they were hardly all ever there at the same time either. It doesn't sound like a 7 day a week job.

I recently put out a CD, and I made myself FINISH one song a day. I recorded the drum tracks live(with a real drummer, since I'm a fairly sh*tty drummer), but I would overdub bass, guitar, keys, acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, and all three vocal parts. And I could do all this in less than an 8 hour window, per song. So yeah, taking a year to do an album, is literally retarded.
(However, in their defense, I was only going for "presentable" recordings, not Grammy worthy)

sounds good to me! so if they don't put out an FM album out during 2013 while touring, they've done nothing! everybody else is doing it, even people older than them, they can do it too. they are cranking out projects solo, so why not FM?
there doesn't seem to be much excuse for SN holdup either, since they don't have to be even in the same room much... unless she thinks that recording process is still the same as 30 or even 10 years ago. she and her fans are always saying she has tons of great songs in her vaults. if she's not inspired to write some new songs and she wants her old songs to see the light of the day, then contribute the vault songs, show up those few times you need to record vocals, or record them with Dave or someone and send them electronically in these 6 months before rehearsals, and there you go!
(but - why would anything be easy when it can be complicated, right?)

yes... that's what i'm worried about, mainly.
while i personally may care much more about Lindsey's solo music than what he does with FM, he seems to really want FM to do an album.
i may be completely off but that's been the feeling since 2009 UL tour - for 3 years now the rest of the Mac is ready for a new album, Mick and Lindsey have been saying that throughout 2009 (remember "there's no new album.... yet!"), in 2010 VH1 BTM, in various interviews at the start of 2012. at the same time, SN has been consistently finding one or the other reason to hold it up. i don't know whether that's her way to get concessions, whether she needs more time than others to get things done, or she just doesn't want to do it, period. her statements changed from no FM album without Dave, to no FM album at all (less than a month ago!), to greatest hits with 2-4 new songs in the last few weeks. so although hard to tell with all contradicting statements she makes, she may be progressing in her thinking towards putting out an album after all? :D ;)

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM TALKS NEW FLEETWOOD MAC ALBUM
Posted on November 4, 2012 by admin
Guitarist Lindsey Buckingham has told Rolling Stone that he would like to record a new Fleetwood Mac album.
Buckingham said that he and other members of the band had already begun work on material for a new record: “…about six, seven months ago, John [McVie] and Mick [Fleetwood] were over here and we actually cut some tracks, and we did enough for maybe half an album.”
However, Buckingham explained that the album, which would be Fleetwood Mac’s first since 2003s ‘Say You Will,’ was on the backburner for now: “…you gotta get [vocalist] Stevie [Nicks] on board with that, and at the time, she was really quite caught up in what she was doing. But I would love to do that because John and Mick were playing their asses off.”
Fleetwood Mac recently announced that they would be reuniting for a tour next April. Buckingham revealed that the band would begin rehearsals early next year: “Fleetwood Mac is gonna start rehearsing probably the beginning of February and I’m actually looking forward to it. I miss those guys.”
He added that he fulfilled his personal musical goals in his time away from the band: “The last eight or nine years, I’ve had a lot of growth. I sort of caught up on the need to explore the more esoteric side of the palette.”

hmm. it sounded to me in that Q&A that that was the schedule Dave kept ("because he has two young daughters") and perhaps some of the musicians but that she and Lori and Sharon continued to stay up working til 2 or 3 or 4 in the morning or whatever and on the weekends. (Reminds me of the scene in the Destiny Rules documentary where they are rehearsing forthe tour and she says they could do the whole set that night if they kept going and LB is pretty firm about having to leave no later than 9pm.)
It seemed as if what she actually liked was that when Dave returned to the house he didn't dump on the vocal arrangements or whatever else she had worked on in his absence, because he doesn't have the ego to have to be *the* creator of everything. It led me to interpret that as different from her working situation with LB where he wants to control *everything* and would probably dismiss or at least start changing what she had spent that time doing without him to put *his* stamp on it. (This may or may not be objectively true but it seems [I]her[I] subjective feelings about it.)
But I still think she loved the whole encompassing nature of the IYD experience... all in the house, making music, having big dinners, a real communal experience... if Dave was in and out due to other commitments fine but she still had enough of a circle of other people who were directly part of the band to stay up all night or all weekend with. I suspect with FM no one else who is actually part of the band is willing or able to do that. (They've all gone on to have fuller personal lives and families, and she's made her career the central thing in her life).

That said, it sounds like Stevie's down for recording in general, she just doesn't want it to take up all of her time - as evidenced by her statements about the new tracks on a possible GH release. So I think she's malleable... they might be able to get her on board if they know how to flatter her in the right ways...

I agree, it's all or nothing. I love Lindsey and Stevie's solo work, but there is something about the end product of what they work on together which is a different kind of magical. I want that again, even if it's 5 songs. I feel like it's John and Mick that are the ones getting left in the dust here; the boys just wanna play! The parents need to get their acts together

Funny thing is, didn't Stevie and Lindsey do this for Twisted? I don't remember the whole story, but from what I recall, they pretty much just went in and laid it all down and finished the song in one day. I think they can clearly do it. Of course, one may argue that it is one thing to do one song and a completely different thing to do a whole album. You would definitely want the album to have a cohesive feel and flow to it, so it would take longer, but there is absolutely no reason it should take them a year! Strangely, Stevie says she finished IYD in January 2011, but she had been talking about the songs and having her "14 songs" by May! They could have recorded, mixed, and released the album in September or October no problem. Now what exactly they did from May to January, who knows and who knows if the album would have been near as good had they rushed it. However, the even larger problem was that the album was finished in Jan but not released until May. Why did WB wait 5 months to release the album? Why did Stevie have her 14 songs a YEAR before they came out? Another reason I think they should drop their label, go indie, and do what they want. They could start working on an album today and finish and release it by they time they hit the road next year. I think Lindsey has come to realize just how fast he can get stuff done now and I think if he really wants to make a new Mac record he can easily convince Stevie that a new record isn't going to take three years of her life.

"We recorded it live and did some harmonies, and then he did some little lead guitar things and it was perfect," Nicks says. "There's no other players, just me and him. Not only did we create something that's probably as Buckingham Nicks as we have been since 1973, but... I think that song really brought Lindsey and I back together. He said to me as he was leaving on that second day, 'I feel like we're closer than we've been in 30 years.' It certainly opens a lot of doors."
And Nicks predicts Fleetwood Mac isn't done, though the group will have to wait for her and "In Your Dreams" as well as Buckingham and his forthcoming album "Seeds We Sow," which is due in September and which Nicks says is "really my favorite thing he's ever done -- and I wish he had saved all these amazing songs for Fleetwood Mac."
"When ('In Your Dreams') runs out of gas, as all records eventually do, then possibly Fleetwood Mac will regroup and do another thing -- whether it's a record or a tour, I don't know," Nicks says. "Or maybe Lindsey and I will go off and rent a house in Wales and do a Buckingham Nicks album. I have no idea, but I do know the music will continue."
Hence, why my hopes for more collaborative music, apart from Dave, will occur. What a difference a year makes... She totally has a right to change her mind and change it back again, I just hope something happens

What DID happen here? Was it the lackluster reception of the recorded Soldier's Angel? Was it the relative failure of the album to generate sales? Something behind the scenes between Stevie and Lindsey? Is she demanding Dave Stewart's involvement?

At this point a mammoth tour without a new album is not on for me as fan. If Lindsey would love to do a new album, I would love to listen to it and would buy it in an instant. Both he and Stevie have proven they have some really exciting creative juices flowing and I can't for the life of me (well maybe I can :)) understand why they wouldn't want to do a really good recording. If we look at Heart and their output in the last two years, albeit it is a different band, at least their tours are supported by new music. They've also learned the lesson that less is more and can say a lot in 10 songs as opposed to 16.

Buckingham’s Fleetwood Mac balancing act
MARTIN KIELTY at 08:54am November 5 2012
Reunion: Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham says he’d struggled in the past with the challenge of balancing his band duties with his solo career.
But he’s resolved the issue – and he’s hoping Mac’s 2013 world tour will lead to the completion of an album he, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie started earlier this year.
Buckingham, who releases a solo live album next week, tells Rolling Stone: “There was a period of time where there was a level of frustration. The Fleetwood Mac agenda seemed to loom a lot larger.
“I would try to put together material for a solo album and there would be some kind of intervention,” he reflects light-heartedly.
He’s now at ease with the situation and says:”If you’re going to participate in a band, you’ve got to be a band member in good standing, and you’ve got to think about the needs of the whole.”
But he adds: “Sometimes I with we were the Eagles – one thing they’ve always been able to do is want the same thing for the same reasons. They probably don’t share the same sensibilities as people, and they may not spend much time together, but somehow they’re able to put that aside and get on with the business of doing business. There’s something to be said for that.”
Buckingham gathered with drummer Fleetwood and bassist McVie in the early summer and reports his bandmates “were playing their asses off.”
He continues: “We cut some tracks and did enough for maybe half an album. But you’ve got to get Stevie Nicks on board with that. At the time she was quite caught up in what she was doing.”
Last month Nicks confirmed Mac were preparing for a reunion tour, saying: “We go into rehearsals somewhere around the end of February. If everything goes to plan we should probably be out by the end of April or May, I would think.”
They last toured in 2009, with 2003′s Say You Will their most recent album of new material. A planned reunion tour was shelved two years ago over scheduling problems. Next year is the 45th anniversary of the band’s first release, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac.

Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham Teases New Tour And Album
Monday, 05 November 2012 Written by Elliott Batte
Fleetwood Mac star Lindsey Buckingham has spoken of the hugely-anticipated new Fleetwood Mac reunion tour and album, which Stevie Nicks confirmed earlier this year.
Buckingham is the lead guitarist and main male vocalist of the world-famous outfit, and has confirmed that the band will start rehearsing in February for their brand new April and May tour. He’s also revealed that they’ve been working on some new tracks - and just need Nicks’ blessing for some recordings to go ahead.
"[In] the last eight or nine years, I've had a lot of growth. I sort of caught up on the need to explore the more esoteric side of the palette,” Buckingham told Rolling Stone. “Fleetwood Mac is gonna start rehearsing probably the beginning of February and I'm actually looking forward to it,” “I miss those guys.”
He continued on to talk about a possible album, saying: “Absolutely, absolutely I would [record a new album]. In fact, about six, seven months ago, John [McVie] and Mick [Fleetwood] were over here and we actually cut some tracks, and we did enough for maybe half an album. But you gotta get Stevie [Nicks] on board with that, and at the time, she was really quite caught up in what she was doing . . . but I would love to do that because John and Mick were playing their asses off.”
Nothing official has been confirmed as of yet but some more news is expected in the near future - so stay with Stereoboard to stay up-to-date.

Lindsey and Stevie can't even do that on their solo albums. :distress:
Lindsey and Stevie can't even do that on their solo albums. :distress:
huh? i don't know how many tracks IYD has, but SWS has only 11. and GOS had only 10, didn't it?
and, another regurgitated article on the topic of new FM album:
http://oldies1017.com/The_Music_World.php
LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM SAYS FLEETWOOD MAC HAS HALF AN ALBUM IN THE CAN
As Lindsey Buckingham winds down his current solo acoustic tour, he's already eying working with Fleetwood Mac next year -- and revealed that basic tracks have been cut for half an album. Buckingham told Rolling Stone that all the focus on his recent solo projects has found him missing the group dynamic, explaining, "(In) the last eight or nine years, I've had a lot of growth. I sort of caught up on the need to explore the more esoteric side of the palette. Fleetwood Mac is gonna start rehearsing probably the beginning of February and I'm actually looking forward to it. I miss those guys."
Although early word has been that, as the did in 2009, Fleetwood Mac would not be touring behind a new album -- Buckingham said that might night be the case for next year's road trek: "About six, seven months ago, John (McVie) and Mick (Fleetwood) were over here and we actually cut some tracks, and we did enough for maybe half an album. But you gotta get Stevie (Nicks) on board with that, and at the time, she was really quite caught up in what she was doing. . . but I would love to do that because John and Mick were playing their asses off."
Buckingham went on to say that unlike Fleetwood Mac's chief '70s competition the Eagles, artistic differences seemed to always override a smooth ride for the band: "Sometimes I wish we were the Eagles. That's one thing they've always been able to do is want the same thing for the same reasons. They probably don't share the same sensibilities as people and they may not spend much time together, but somehow they're able to put that aside and get on with the business of doing business, and there's something to be said for that."
Buckingham understands that the psycho drama between him and former lover Stevie Nicks -- not to mention the break-up of Christine and John McVie -- was the gasoline that ran the engine of the band: "One of the real draws of Fleetwood Mac beyond the music in those earlier days was this musical soap opera. And it was a very literal portrayal of what was really going on behind the scenes. Y'know, you could certainly make a case for saying that we made a great deal of success on a career level but we were pretty dismal failures in our personal lives, for any number of years, y'know?"

So does anyone else wonder if the public comments are intended to make it clear who is holding things up? This feels like round 2... round 1 came courtesy of Mick, who was rather ham-handed. Now it's Lindsey's turn to put the public/fan pressure on Stevie? With love, of course. ;)
"(In) the last eight or nine years, I've had a lot of growth. I sort of caught up on the need to explore the more esoteric side of the palette." Translation: the solo stuff is fun but it don't pay like the Mac stuff and my coffers need refilling. :)

that's what the tour is for, not the album. almost nobody makes money on albums, FM most certainly will not. he could have just happily toured with Mac and raking in money, without having to make any new albums.
i am kinda glad actually that he finally said what he, Mick, and John were doing at the beginning of this year. both he and Mick were circling around it the whole year in interviews, talking about 8 songs, about wanting to record with Stevie again, etc etc, but neither wanted to say what they actually did - they they got together and recorded enough tracks for at least a half of new album.
just look at the threads for the last year plus, since the talk of the possible Mac tour started - we all were blaming the whole FM, all members for not wanting a new album.
so i agree with you - this interview, together with SN's recent statements just clarified who does and who doesn't want new album. that's all. why blame the whole band when the 3 of them are probably much much more frustrated about no new album than the rest of us?

I can just about guarantee John is feeling absolutely NO frustration about not recording a new album. I'm sure he and Mick are happy to lay down some tracks when LB invites them, but they want to be on the road. I can't recall now, has Mick actually made statements about recording, or just touring?

Stevie never said she didn't want a new album - just that she doesn't want a war and for it to take forever to record. In fact, during the Unleashed tour she said "the world deserves another Fleetwood Mac album" and said they would do it. Which is why Lindsey began his joke onstage that they didn't have a new album to promote -- "yet"...
"Yet" being the operative word. So -- just you wait. :)

No I know..I just hate to address the fact that (IMO) obviously their heyday ended right before/after Mirage.
But since they have clearly prolonged and stuck around..as have we..I thought of it in terms of when new material/evolution/agreement from the band on touring, albums, etc. stopped. And therefore the first day of FM itself

In my fantasy world we'd get a new FM album every other year. In between we'd get solo albums from Stevie and Lindsey. When they toured solo they would only play songs from their solo catalogues and when they played with FM they would omit their solo outputs.

The relationship between members of Fleetwood Mac over the years has been tumultuous, to say the least. And for some time the “band first” mentality wore on guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. But in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Buckingham’s mindset has shifted over the years, so much so that the idea of making a new record with Fleetwood Mac is very appealing to him.
“Absolutely, absolutely I would,” Buckingham says of working on a new Fleetwood Mac album. The change of heart came after years of freedom to work on his own music, including his solo album Seeds We Sow, which was released last year.
“[In] the last eight or nine years, I’ve had a lot of growth. I sort of caught up on the need to explore the more esoteric side of the palette,” says Buckingham.
That growth has led to a rebirth of excitement to tour with his Fleetwood Mac bandmates, who will begin a massive tour in 2013.
“Fleetwood Mac is gonna start rehearsing probably the beginning of February and I’m actually looking forward to it. I miss those guys.”
Back in July, Nicks first confirmed a Fleetwood Mac tour with “everybody on board” – something that’s been on hold for several years due to the solo careers of Nicks and Buckingham.
Fleetwood Mac’s last studio album was 2003′s Say You Will.

another regurgitation of the RS interview - these different write-ups show up every few days, usually with new conclusion in the title and a different way of retelling of the same three responses Lindsey gave to RS last week.
note: i try to post only articles with different titles and slightly changed content, that start the avalanche of re-posts of the exact same texts at different radio stations and blogs.
i was asked by a friend the other day why i keep posting these... i just find it interesting to see how the same 3 sentences keep getting re-interpreted and different stuff emphasized as the time goes on - and i like to have that documented all in one place.
however if everybody here is extremely annoyed by posting all these different articles re-interpreting the same 3 statements, i can stop.

Lindsey Buckingham Talks Fleetwood Mac Tour
Daniel Eriksson|11.06.2012
Rolling Stone recently spoke to Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, who is currently finishing up a solo acoustic tour, and getting ready to release a digital live album on November 13.
The guitarist talked about Fleetwood Mac's upcoming tour next year: “Fleetwood Mac is gonna start rehearsing probably the beginning of February and I'm actually looking forward to it. I miss those guys.”
Those are comforting words for Fleetwood Mac fans, because Buckingham hasn't always seen eye-to-eye with his band mates “There was a period of time where there was a level of frustration because the Fleetwood Mac agenda seemed to loom a lot larger... I would try to put together material [for] a solo album and there would be some kind of intervention... If you are gonna participate in a band, you've got to be a band member in good standing, and you've got to think about the needs of the whole.”
If and when the new album comes out it will be Fleetwood Mac's first studio release since Say You Will in 2003.

The way I see it, there are a number of options!
1) Release an album as a trio. If this is the last FM album, it might feel almost full circle to have an all-guy line-up. However, they have to know it won't sell (that much)....FM sales are in direct proportion to Stevie's participation.....both TIME's sales and all solo sales prove this.
2) Get another female vocalist. An unknown is out of the question....no one would care. Bekka was too polarizing ~ people liked her or hated her ~ and I don't think either Lola Thomas or the gal from Mick's SOMETHING BIG, while great singers, made enough of an impact. Sheryl Crow might have been a good fit, but after Lindsey pretty much poo-pooed it last time, I doubt Sheryl would do it. Plus, I think she wanted to do it with Stevie. The only other gal I can think of would be Chi Coltrane....great blend of rock, blues, soul and folk. She always struck me as a good sub for Christine (great piano player!), but there are also elements of Stevie there.
3) Hope that Stevie can be swayed (Personally, I think she can...provided the boys are VERY nice to her!)

Nice ideas - all feasible except for Christine's participation; I can't imagine her having any interest in working with the band. She's been living a private life for a long time now. At this point, I suppose, that going public in any large scale manner may not hold any appeal to her.
I agree that they have one or several more albums. Unfortunately they don't have the luxury of time, and they don't seem to be in any hurry.
I'm conflicted about these "money" tours the band seemingly have grown accustomed to doing. On one hand, suppose you were a senior age rocker at the tail end of a long career, and was able to financially capitalize your body of work, why wouldn't you? It's good business sense. There's nothing wrong with that, especially since it gives fans, especially younger fans who weren't even alive during the heyday, a rare opportunity to see the band still in action.
If they do record a new album and tour behind it, I hope they perform at least half of the songs. It is so disingenuous when an entire tour is branded to promote a new album: the title becomes the tour title, and all the merchandise carries the imagery of the album. Yet when they hit the road, only several new songs are in the set! Those few songs are only a blip - giving the show the most minor distinction from the small group of songs they've been resting on 30 something years.

We also have to keep in mind that she turns 70 next summer. I can't think of too many rockers who are still active after that milestone. Chuck Berry? Little Richard? Even Carole King has retired.

One thing you can't say about FM touring behind a new album is that they didn't play enough new songs. On the SYW tour, I think they played upwards of seven new songs- not bad at all! That being said, I do find myself having a bit of an enthusiasm deficit regarding the upcoming 2013 tour. Yes, Unleashed was a great tour. But it seems likely to be a note-for-note repeat of the same show. Considering all of the great new music that has been released by Stevie and Lindsey in the interim, it all seems a bit... sad... that they haven't gained any forward creative momentum on the Fleetwood Mac front.

Just for some perspective: Mick Jagger will be 70 next year. Paul McCartney is already 70. Willie Nelson will be 80 next year. Loretta Lynn is 80. Rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson is 75. BB King is 87. There are so many veteran artists who are soldiering on into their 70s and 80s these days. Christine definitely bowed out early, in my opinion.

It was just a nutty statement. He's never praised the Eagles for being an example of anything he wanted to be. In fact, just the opposite. To hold them up as a model now just reveals how far his standards have fallen. Michele

or maybe, considering all his past statements about the eagles, he just wanted to make it clear how ridiculous is Mac's current inability to get on the same page and get on with album-making. even the eagles members can get on board to do stuff majority of them wants to do, while all Mac members still can't.

But he always slagged the Eagles for compromising their music and getting back together for commercial reasons. He besmirched "Hole in the World" and the country audience it beckoned. By invoking the Eagles' name, it seems to me he's suggesting his bandmates should do things he's always criticized. If he meant, "they're a shambles and if they can do it we should be able to," that's not what it sounded like to me.

or how much his priorities have shifted. I found his comments about having gotten his fill of solo stuff in the last 8-9 years (I'm paraphrasing) interesting... and wondered if he has begun to find it a little boring. Or maybe he's grown to where his need for total control has waned and collaborating isn't as anathema as it was before. All of this may be due to having children which quickly teaches you to be flexible and learn to compromise.
And let's face it, 3 kids growing up in LA and a wife's business to underwrite ain't cheap. :]

Has anyone seen anything about just how successful her business has actually been? Glossy magazine pieces are nice PR but don't necessarily indicate real sales. I'm curious. For her biz to outperform his songwriting/publishing catalogs and his publishing royalties and tour income would be mighty impressive.

I saw him in Nashville Thursday evening. He had roughly 300 people, in a venue that held probably triple that. He kept going on about how the "big machine" and "little machine" have finally found a way to coexist. And I appreciate that that has become the case....but let's face the facts. 300 people, at $50(before surcharges) is 15K. But that's before his agent, and any other promoter "write offs". But also, I'm sure he (obviously) had a guarantee, and the promoter probably took a hit. Maybe a big hit.... I have no idea of how much he would require for a guarantee....

That's interesting... it was the exact opposite here in Austin. He sold out Antone's fairly quickly (it's a standing room only venue). The last week before the show, more tickets ended up being released. It was PACKED, my guess about 900 people crammed into the room. There was no space to move. I've always known Austin would really support Lindsey if he brought his solo act here. I'm kinda surprised Nashville didn't do the same, with it being such a music mecca.

Im surprised no one has mentioned the insanity that is Lindsey saying he's jelous of how the Eagles were able to set aside their differences for the sake of business. Of ALL the many examples he could've used, he chose the band that went 27 years between studio albums
Thank goodness, I wasn't the only one shocked by this statement. I was really stunned when I read that. Only two things I can think of is: a. He really needs to refill his bank accounts. B. He really misses his bandmates.
I still can't believe those words came from his mouth. It is the polar opposite of his normal stance on like everything:confused:

I was surprised, too. I figured there would be at least 1000 people there. The balcony wasn't even OPEN. I think maybe Nashville has too many options for entertainment...

But it got me to wondering. Of course no matter how successful Kristen is she can't touch the millions he makes, but one wonders if her business is really 'real' or just one of those rich-wife hobbies.

from all their recent statements, i don't think Lindsey, Mick and John are considering anybody else but Stevie. i'm surprised so many here do... of course that's the [ancient] history of FM - replace people who left.
Stevie will show up if Mick, Lindsey and John get serious about recording a Fleetwood Mac album. It's unfathomable to hear any fan speculation about getting a new singer. I have zero interest in hearing a new female singer with the guys. At the bare minimum, they could distill down to trio, but that will not happen. They recognize that Stevie is the ying to Lindsey's yang! And Lindsey's yang has gotten fairly big; Stevie could counter that!

so.. as per the Twilight premiere interviews, Stevie spent 4 days in the studio with Lindsey, and finished two tracks (goes without saying they were probably from the sessions Lindsey did with Mick & John, if this is to be new FM material, as she implied) and they're still working on a third? And that (fingers crossed it's true) they'll be digging deeper into their bank of songs for this tour..Only watched the video once, but I'm pretty sure that was the gist of what she revealed.
...:] wooo, let it all be true. What a fantastic year 2013 has the potential to be for Fleetwood Mac  get that EP out pronto guys!

Instead of just an EP, I'm going to think about a BN reissue with the 3 additional songs as an extra selling point.

I think what is interesting here is that she talked about being in the studio with Lindsey, but didn't mention John or Mick. And considering that Lindsey was bouncing around Tennessee for most of last week with just a guitar and a laptop, and they dusted off an old Buckingham Nicks song to boot, I suspect these are BN tracks as opposed to FM tracks. This makes sense. Once you start getting the old band back together, it usually involves record companies, managers, contracts, politics, etc. And the "Fleetwood Mac" brand dictates that the recordings would have to be of a certain level of production comparable to other Fleetwood Mac songs. If Stevie and Lindsey record a handful of low-key, unadorned new songs under the BN or "Stevie and Lindsey" moniker, they don't have to deal with all of that "big machine" baggage. Plus "Fleetwood Mac" simply does not do EPs.
I kinda doubt that these are being recorded in connection with a Buckingham Nicks reissue, especially since there has been no mention of this in any of their recent press. My prediction: *IF* these new recordings ever see the light of day, they will be released under the "Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham" moniker as a 5-track iTunes-only EP ala One Man Show.

Well, I'm thinking that the 2 songs of Lindsey's were probably the ones that he already worked on with Mick and John. She probably just laid down background vocals.

I thought Stevie originally said they were working on 2-4 songs (or who knows)... and since Lindsey already worked on 6 with Mick and John and he has 3 coming on a soundtrack and lucky #13 is missing from BN... Well, I just took her high number.
It is a crap shoot, right?

This would work, but why just the three? I've always liked the idea of them rereleasing BN and recording some new songs to go along, but I just don't see how they could package it unless they included the original album and then a second disc for the new songs. It would seem somewhat awkward to include 2012 songs on the 1973 album, so what I've always felt would work best is have a second disc with all new recordings. The second disc would include some new versions of songs off the original album, plus some demos that didn't make the album or were written for BN #2, and then one or two more completely new BN songs. I figure if they are going to go out of their way to include these songs with a rerelease of BN, then they might as well go ahead and record some new versions of the old songs and demos.

Well, Reprise owns the masters at least up until Say You Will. Lindsey might own his songs on that, I don't know. My point is if they were going to put new songs on a greatest hits package, wouldn't they have to resign with Reprise?

If they wanted new material on the album, absolutely. I still cannot understand the need for yet another Greatest Hits/compilation package from the band. We have so many already:
1) Greatest Hits ('88)
2) The Chain Box Set
3) The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac
And you could even throw in projects like:
4) The Dance
5) Live In Boston
6) & possibly Live ('80) too.
How could Fleetwood Mac possibly need to repackage their career... again?
Like someone else mentioned, maybe they'll record a few new songs & simply toss them out on iTunes before the tour much like Lindsey just did with his new live "album."

The phrasing that Stevie used "throw them out" was rather amusing. I do think maybe that suggests Itunes or something that doesn't require packaging. I'm not sure you actually throw things out onto a disc.

"Reissue/repackage." God Bless, Morrissey. It is not beneath Fleetwood Mac to paint a vulgar picture; just ask the Rolling Stones. The Stones have another--iTunes only(?)--compilation out called "Grr" (as in "grrl"?). It also contains a couple of new tracks. So this may be the new vogue for old-timey acts that still tour. I can't speak to it from a Reprise perspective, but artists signed to new labels released Greatest Hits packages all the time (e.g., Morrissey, Scritti Politti).

It's being released physically a couple different ways. There are two different versions on cd, a shorter one, and then one with 80 tracks, and I believe there is also a special edition vinyl version.
