Lindsey Buckingham has been traveling throughout the U.S. this year playing intimate, unplugged concerts in support of his 2011 solo album, Seeds We Sow. Now, the Fleetwood Mac singer/guitarist is set to release one of these performances as a digital download. Lindsey Buckingham: One Man Show, will be available via iTunes on November 13, and will be the veteran artist's first recording documenting one of his solo acoustic gigs. The album was recorded at a September 1 show that was held at Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines, Iowa.

"This performance is from a single night in Des Moines…taken right off the console mix, with a couple of room mikes added in," Buckingham says about the album. "It's live and raw, with no post-production. I love it! It captures not only the spirit of the performance, but also the spirit of where I now live as an artist."

The 13-song recording captures Buckingham playing various selections from solo catalog, including "Go Insane" and Trouble," as well as Fleetwood Mac classics like "Go Your Own Way" and "Never Going Back Again."

Buckingham will hit the road for a new series of U.S. solo acoustic shows starting November 3 in Oklahoma City. Visit LindseyBuckingham.com to check out all of his upcoming tour dates.

Since I was at the Des Moines show, I am very excited about this! Hopefully Down on Rodeo is included! My only gripe is it's on itunes. Wish it was on amazon as well!

Yes, this is very exciting but Oh Lindsey... "the spirit of where I now live as an artist" Really?? Surely just "who I am as..." or something similar would have been fine? Just as well we've grown accustomed to his "unique" turn of phrase by now and this just raises a wry smile and small shake of the head... Gotta love it!

I agree! It may well come out at some point. I'm a sucker for proper artwork etc. Exciting to have the live album out though.

Cool!

It's a shame that two of his very best songs are being left off but this is still a nice surprise.

I've said plenty of times before that this is exactly the kind of thing Lindsey should be doing for every single show on his tour and then they should be on sale from his website. Other bands do it and it doesn't take a lot of work. I'd do all the mixing and editing for him if he sent me the files!

Bar the two missing tracks my only gripe is that I'd like to be able to get a lossless version for my "archive", not a lossy Apple file. Or does iTunes offer lossless files and I've missed it?

Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham To Release Solo Acoustic Live Album
11 hour(s) ago | Music News | By Rock Square

Lindsey Buckingham’s critically acclaimed cross-country solo tour doesn’t wind down until late November, but the Fleetwood Mac frontman is already releasing a live album recorded during his 2012 jaunt. Lindsey Buckingham: One Man Show will be available digitally on iTunes come November 13.

The “raw and unmixed” thirteen-song set was recorded live and in one take on September 1, 2012 at Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines, Iowa.

According to Buckingham, the recording was “taken right off the console mix, with a couple of room mikes added in. It’s live and raw with no post-production. I love it! It captures not only the spirit of the performance, but also the spirit of where I now live as an artist.”

Elaborating on that “spirit”, Buckingham said: “My center has always been voice and guitar, and as I've evolved, I've looked to broaden the range and vocabulary of that center. So when I decided to tour in 2012, it suddenly felt as though I'd been working towards something, that I'd arrived at a new place. I sensed it was time to do something I'd never done: a one man show.”

YouTube evidence suggests that Buckingham’s Des Moines performance was a hushed and reverent affair more than deserving of an official document. Check out the video below. Stirring stuff, right?

Songs From The Small Machine - Live In L.A. (Live At Saban Theatre In Beverly Hills, CA / 2011) came out in November 2011:

plus digital version came out May 1, 2012:

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM RELEASING FIRST LIVE ALBUM NEXT MONTH

10/31/2012

Lindsey Buckingham will release his first ever solo live album via iTunes on November 13th. The 13-song collection, Lindsey Buckingham: One Man Show, was recorded on September 1st in Des Moines, Iowa at Hoyt Sherman Place, and chronicles the set Buckingham has been playing on his current solo acoustic tour. The album features Buckingham tapping into his solo work with tracks like "Go Insane" and "Trouble," Fleetwood Mac with "I'm So Afraid," and "Go Your Own Way" -- and even a rare dip into the Buckingham Nicks catalogue with "Stephanie."

The tracklisting for Lindsey Buckingham: One Man Show is: "Cast Away Dreams," "Bleed To Love Her," "Not Too Late," "Stephanie," "Come," "Shut Us Down," "Go Insane," "Never Going Back Again," "Big Love," "I'm So Afraid," "Go Your Own Way," "Trouble," and "Seeds We Sow."

We asked Lindsey Buckingham if he was ever been jealous of his late '70s colleagues Peter Frampton and Neal Schon, who came to symbolize the guitar heroes of the era, while his own groundbreaking work was buried under the drama of the Fleetwood Mac myth: "To some degree, the way the average person judges guitar is sort of guitar for its own sake. And I guess, I've always tried to make guitar in service of the song, and maybe that makes it a little less obvious to the average listener. Part of what I judge success as being, in terms of good record making is when the guitar work -- or any instrumentation kind of melds to the song and becomes not something that you're aware of, just becomes part and parcel with the whole."

Lindsey Buckingham tour dates (subject to change):

November 3 - Oklahoma City, OK - Academy Of Contemporary Music at University Of Central Oklahoma
November 4 - Overland Park, KS - Carlsen Center
November 5 - Little Rock, AR - Juanita's Cantina Ballroom

Lindsey Buckingham Releases Live One Man Show On Digital
by VVN MUSIC on NOVEMBER 7, 2012

Lindsey Buckingham is one of our greatest guitarists.

Unfortunately, that sometimes is missed when he plays in a band like Fleetwood Mac or on his solo tours. That’s why it is so exciting to finally get Buckingham solo, just his guitar and his voice, on One Man Show, coming on November 13 via digital download only.

The album was recorded live, in one take, on September 1 at Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines, Iowa. Buckingham said “As an artist, you need to seek out what is essential and discard what is inessential, to always keep an eye on what lives at the center. That was the impetus for this performance. My center has always been voice and guitar, and as I’ve evolved, I’ve looked to broaden the range and vocabulary of that center. It captures not only the spirit of the performance, but also the spirit of where I now live as an artist.”

Buckingham will also be touring during November promoting the release.

What a shame it did not make the front page of iTunes. Also a shame that he didn't include any songs from the new album except the title track which I would easily happily definitively trade with RAB; also not one track from GOS or OOTC! (I think UTS must be his own fav of his own solo albums, no?) Also the Raven song isn't here. So it's kinda interesting that this is LFBH redeux.

These are the songs he's been playing on his solo tour this year, there should be no surprises here. He only played the Raven song twice in the beginning and this particular show was recorded way after that. RAB wasn't played that night.

Shut Us Down and Bleed to Love Her are my favourites after the 1st listen. His vocals are way better than they were on the Bass hall album. I haven't heard the Small Machine one so I can't comment on any differences there.

I agree. I saw him in Nashville last Thursday, and I was expecting tons of the whispered vocals, but that wasn't the case. He was strong!

I bought "Stephanie" at 5:45am on my way to work and blasted it the whole way. He definitely mixed it/added some extra chords to that one. Sounds kind of different from the other tour versions.

Thanks, that's what I suspected. I will probably wait and see if it is offered somewhere else later on with better quality. What a shame that itunes is the leader in internet downloads yet they fail to offer better quality products. I'm just venting. :sorry:

ICONIC FLEETWOOD MAC GUITARIST, SINGER, WRITER AND PRODUCER LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM RELEASES SOLO ACOUSTIC LIVE ALBUM

Legendary guitarist, singer/songwriter, Grammy winner, producer and Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame member Lindsey Buckingham has released his first ever solo acoustic live album, Lindsey Buckingham: One Man Show. The album, recorded live and in one take from his Hoyt Sherman Place show in Des Moines, Iowa on September 1st, is a raw and unmixed performance that includes many of his hits. Click Here to Get One Man Show now, exclusively on iTunes.

Buckingham says, “As an artist, you need to seek out what is essential and discard what is inessential, to always keep an eye on what lives at the center. That was the impetus for this performance. My center has always been voice and guitar, and as I've evolved, I've looked to broaden the range and vocabulary of that center. So when I decided to tour in 2012, it suddenly felt as though I'd been working towards something, that I'd arrived at a new place. I sensed it was time to do something I'd never done: A one man show. This performance is from a single night in Des Moines, Iowa, taken right off the console mix, with a couple of room mikes added in. It's live and raw, with no post-production. I love it! It captures not only the spirit of the performance, but also the spirit of where I now live as an artist.”

Lindsey Buckingham: One Man Show – Track Listing

1. Cast Away Dreams
2. Bleed To Love Her
3. Not Too Late
4. Stephanie
5. Come
6. Shut Us Down
7. Go Insane
8. Never Going Back Again
9. Big Love
10. So Afraid
11. Go Your Own Way
12. Trouble
13. Seeds We Sow

Buckingham is concluding his year long trek of sold out solo acoustic shows that have garnered rave reviews across the US. The intimate and stripped down setting on the road has truly displayed the immense talents of this legendary performer.

Lindsey Buckingham – One Man Show (2012)
by Nick DeRiso, Something Else Reviews, November 14, 2012
http://somethingelsereviews.com/2012/11/14/lindsey-buckingham-one-man-show-2012/

Lindsey Buckingham, on a brilliant new live acoustic album, redefines what’s at stake in his own songs — helping us not just to hear them in a new way, but to feel them in the same new way.

That’s perhaps best heard on this album’s version of “Trouble,” once a No. 9 hit in 1981 and now reborn in this first-ever acoustic live album — done in one take, with no overdubs, from a concert in Des Moines, Iowa on September 1, 2012. Buckingham pulls every piece of the song apart, then reassembles it as something utterly different.

Where he once sounded like he was in on the joke, like he could get past whatever that trouble was, now Buckingham sounds less sure. And that space between cocksure young man and graying middle-age uncertainty gives the song a fresh and thunderous power.

Elsewhere, Buckingham’s pained cries, devastating and nakedly sensual, on “Bleed To Love Her” are bolstered by an insistent guitar figure that pulses like a thrumming heartbeat. “Never Going Back Again,” always an edgy, insulting retort as conveyed within the Fleetwood Mac show, here sounds like a desperately sad admission of guilt over another backslide. “So Afraid” is transformed from a molten expression of fury into something far more complex, with more doubt and less rage.

Buckingham gives similarly raw, starkly heartfelt renditions of “Not Too Late,” the opening cut from his 2006′s solo album Under the Skin, “Come” from Fleetwood Mac’s 2003 effort Say You Will, and — in a special treat — “Stephanie,” a searching, deeply emotional leftover track from 1973′s pre-Fleetwood Mac Buckingham Nicks project.

But those lesser-known cuts, perhaps understandably, hold less emotional resonance than do his radical reworkings of songs we’ve come to know and love — and this is where One Man Show, time and time again, not only delights but intrigues.

Buckingham turns “Go Insane,” once a new wave-inspired No. 23 hit from 1984, into an angular, slow-motion meltdown — the sound of someone hanging by a trembling thread. “Big Love,” in a lean, fleet performance that’s not all that different from his solo turn during Fleetwood Mac’s more recent tours, is given a similarly comprehensive makeover.

He closes this album — issued on Tuesday exclusively via iTunes — with a new version of the title track from 2011′s Seeds We Sow, Buckingham’s best solo effort in years. As hard-eyed and tough as that project could no doubt be, as brave in its unwillingness to concede any damn thing to the sands of time and regret and memory, this new version of “Seeds” provides — once more — its own glimpse into the heart of the matter.

As Buckingham sings about a glowing dream, of being reached for in the middle of the night by a lost love, you sense how hard it is sometimes to keep moving forward. Even when he knows he must.

That Buckingham keeps making that leap, time and time again, whatever the risks, is what makes his work so compulsively enjoyable.

Trouble isn't my favorite song, but he gave a pretty accurate analogy to the different tones set by the two versions.

You know, I'm starting to wonder if he actually added backing tracks that weren't there during the concert onto this album or if I was so infatuated/mind blown/drooling/overpowered by what was in front of my face that I never noticed them in concert... Stephanie definitely sounds different, and I'd say the same for So Afraid. I'm still getting it of course! I will listen and buy all versions of the same song as many times as he wants to put them out!

There were backing tracks for Stephanie & I'm So Afraid in concert. As for whether or not he tweaked it after recording, well, I wouldn't be able to say.

I've been listening through the album. Of course, it's fabulous just as the show was. But holy delay batman.

we could hear the backing-track-only during the pre-soundcheck at The Orange Peel since it was a GA venue and we had to wait in line to get in. GYOW backing track has strumming parts and also a harmony part in the chorus (you can go your own way part).

Lindsey Buckingham still going his own way on new live album
ALBUM REVIEW
NOVEMBER 15, 2012
BY: PETER ROCHE

Lindsey Buckingham: One Man Show
Credits: iTunes

Music newsletter

Lindsey Buckingham’s been going his own way ever since he traded in his swimming trunks for guitar. He’s been involved with Fleetwood Mac for thirty-five years, writing and orchestrating now classic albums like Rumours and Tusk with Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie.

But Buckingham has always reserved his more unusual gems for solo albums like Law and Order (1981), Out of the Cradle (1992), and Under the Skin (2006). These albums still boast Lindsey’s uncanny pop sensibility—but their best bits are usually found in the darker, more introspective songs or quirky alterna-tunes that exploit technology (drum machines and synthesizers) or subvert established forms (folk ballads, twelve-bar blues, etc.).

Buckingham released an excellent in-concert disc—Live at the Bass Performance Hall—a couple years back, but it wasn’t until 2011 that he gave longtime backup musicians Neale Heywood and Brett Tuggle a break and struck out alone. Now available exclusively on iTunes, Lindsey Buckingham: One Man Show captures the architect of Mac at a creative peak as he regales Des Moines, Iowa fans with just his voice and guitars.

The digital album offers a baker’s dozen tracks from throughout Buckingham’s prodigious career, from the sparkling instrumental “Stephanie” (from the 1973 Buckingham Nicks LP) to the brooding—then uplifting—title track from last year’s terrific Seeds We Sow. He even tosses in obligatory Mac fave “Go Your Own Way” by playing along with a recording of the song’s subtle (but crucial) contrapuntal rhythm guitar. The technique is used sparingly here, occurring only in spots where Buckingham needs the freedom to embark on one of his sensation lead guitar breaks.

“Thank you for being part of this experiment I’m doing,” Lindsey greets the crowd at Hoyt Sherman Place.

The finger-plucker explains the intimate, coffeehouse-styled shows comprise the next step in the evolution of his solo work—the modest “small machine” (versus Mac’s arena-rock colossus) wherein he funnels his innermost angst and outermost joys. Later, Buckingham surmises his independent work couldn’t have happened without Fleetwood Mac’s success, and notes how both worlds now coexist harmoniously.

The shimmery “Not Too Late” finds the auteur questioning his motives after mulling a newspaper review. “Cast Away Dreams” bemoans another aspect of professional musicianship—extended touring—and the lasting effects on one’s home life.

“Gone away…no I cannot stay,” croons Lindsey. “I hope you understand.”

Originally destined for a solo album in the late 1990’s, “Bleed to Love Her” first appeared on Mac reunion disc The Dance before receiving proper studio treatment on 2003’s Say You Will. Here, the lovelorn piece vibrates with Buckingham’s syncopated finger-picking, and his voice builds to a spine-tingling crescendo.
Buckingham uses the body of his guitar as a percussion instrument on the sinister “Come,” then unleashes an appropriately distorted torrent of solo notes beneath his own thick (electronically triggered) rhythm chords. “So Afraid” employs more of what late acoustic guitarist Michael Hedges described as a“heavy mental” approach, with bass strings growling and treble strings echoing in bold musical measures that sound anything but unplugged.

Lindsey also indulges with three signature pieces. Bouncy Rumours chestnut “Never Going Back Again” benefits from a pretty, delicate new introduction, while artificial harmonics, clinical strumming, and hell-raising vocals transform “Go Insane” into a haunting elegy.

Having already received an acoustic makeover in past concert sets (from its synth-pop beginning on Mac’s Tango in the Night), “Big Love” pulsates schizophrenically as Buckingham veers from a whisper to full-on primal screams.

“I was looking out for love,” he says of the song’s inception. “Not looking for love, but looking out for it—pushing back, defending.

“Now it’s a meditation on the power and importance of change.”

Law and Order hit “Trouble” is re-imagined for the One Man encore, with Lindsey engaging some clever vocal inflections filling the sound with strings that buzz and reverberate in the mix.

Buckingham’s solitary gambit works because the material (so strong and refreshingly different to begin with) really shines without all the bell and whistles. Stripped down to bare essentials, the songs more readily reveal their emotional essences—adorable and ugly—for the candid scrutiny of a one-take, untouched console recording.

Lindsay Buckingham is, of course, best known for his work with Fleetwood Mac. But on One Man Show he shows what this reviewer feels is superior emotional intensity and provides a more authentic musical experience for the listener, including his radically different takes on Fleetwood Mac tunes.

This literally is a one man show—just Buckingham and his guitar, done in front of an audience on September 1, 2012 in Des Moines, Iowa. There are no guest artists or extra musicians. None were needed.

Take "Never Going Back Again," which here conveys less anger and more guilt and despair over backsliding and failing to move forward than the famous hit version. This is also true of "So Afraid," and "Go Your Own Way," which reflect more anguish and less anger as well.

This live acoustic recording, released exclusively on November 13 on iTunes, deals a great deal with familiar emotional terrain: loss, dysfunctional relationships, and the mistakes we all make in life.

Lesser known tracks like "Stephanie," "Go Insane," "Come," and "Big Love" all sound here as though Buckingham is literally offering up a piece of his soul to the listener. Perhaps the standout song on the recording is "Seeds We Sow," one of the most honest and heartrending songs of the past decade.

In the press release, Buckingham says, "As an artist, you need to seek out what is essential and discard what is inessential, to always keep an eye on what lives at the center."

This recording does just that.

This is without doubt Buckingham's best solo work so far. To offer radically different versions of songs that fans of his former group know and love, as well as numbers from his solo recordings and to do it live and acoustic without a lot of overdubbing or post-production, takes a lot of courage. Buckingham has taken that chance and he has delivered.

This is the kind of quote that I picture makes the diehard fan revel in its favoritism. How sweet also that the reviewer sites a new song as a standout track rather than a standard like GYOW.

From LB's perspective, I wonder if he believes this represents the "Essential" tracks that best represent and reflect his career. I have seen "Essential" collections of other artists and thought it was just another way for record executives to sell another "best of" package. But this collection of songs appears to be hand selected by LB, without the influence of anyone else (I think LB listened to others, especially Neale, when developing the setlist in the past). I also think these are the songs that best represent his live performances - different from the studio versions. I wonder what songs LB would pick for a "Best of Studio Tracks"?

that's interesting, and you might be onto something, but i think only partially.

when asked why not some additional songs, LB said on several occasions that this was the first time ever he was doing this sort of tour, and wanted to make sure it "works". that people are not bored, that the show has an arc, and that he keeps everybody's interest from the start to finish.

he said he knew that he can get on the stage alone and do a number of acoustic songs (and all 6 he did on SWS tour were included again)... but i guess he thought you need some rockier/electric songs if you don't want to lull people to sleep? (and if you want to be essential LB! there are number of other performers who do purely acoustic / mellower sets, but i don't think LB can stay mellow for too long  ) and he was probably unsure about how backing track thing will work on stage with him alone...

imo, which seems to be also the opinion of both critics and audiences who saw this tour (and/or bought One-Man Show recording), results were spectacular.

if he does this again (and i really hope he does!!:xoxo:)i suspect he might re-work more of his electric songs, possibly including backing tracks, next time around, as well as re-work more songs acoustically.

so while this setlist was a nice representation of the songs throughout his career, and it worked great, i'm not sure that it was meant to be essential LB.

plus, he should have had Rock Away Blind and Down On Rodeo included as a regular part of the setlist, if you ask me. :p

But if critics and audiences hated the tour that would not make it less a triumph to those who liked it. I don't think the number of people who agree with you makes the opinion any more or less "correct." In the other thread, you talked about someone being one of the "rare" people who didn't like the one man show. I don't know why rarity matters. If you don't like it, you don't like it. I don't think the number of people who share a view validate it. We all know how peculiar and singular tastes can be.

Will the amount of positive feedback Lindsey gets change his future choices? Probably. He said that it was because he noticed the response that Big Love/ Go Insane got during his solo performances that he brought it into the FM show, so crowd response matters a lot in the future trajectory I know.
Therefore, I love learning what the general consensus is about something, which is why I appreciate reviews and the tweets you share so much. It's like polling.

But to the extent that crowd sourcing is used to suggest that someone is right or wrong, I reject it.

that's interesting bit of info about one-man BL and GO versions - i didn't know he said that!

i also wish LB would never ever speed up his voice on recordings again. and i hope that whatever general opinions will be expressed, via crowdsourcing or "legitimate" critical reviews, will back up that notion. :D

When I saw Lindsey in Solana Beach, he also did Holiday Road in 1993, but it wasn't a normal part of his OOTC setlist. Maybe he didn't like the way it sounded or something, because he didn't keep it throughout the tour.

I don't know about him ever doing Slow Dancing.

As far as I know, he has never performed Slow Dancing live. On the Out of the Cradle tour, he played Holiday Road live at a few radio stations, including WCBN Boston (3-26-1993) and also a segment at a Detroit Radio station. Both versions are out there as bootlegs. An official version is on the Bass Performance Hall DVD/CD.

CD Review: Lindsey Buckingham - 'One Man Show'
Posted on Thursday, November 29, 2012, by Kit O'Toole

http://blindedbysound.com/post/viewpost/cd-review-lindsey-buckingham-one-man-show-

"I'm not a young man, but I'm a child in my soul," Lindsey Buckingham sings in "Not Too Late." Indeed, this lyric perfectly summarizes his multifaceted career, one that has experienced fascinating twists and turns. His guitar playing skills, highly personal songwriting, sometimes eccentric arrangements, and his emotional voice have added up to a sound that is uniquely Lindsey Buckingham, both with and without Fleetwood Mac. Time has found him downscaling production, letting his words and voice convey his complex themes. At the same time, his playing and singing have never sounded stronger, evoking the same rage and passion as in his younger days. His first solo acoustic live album, One Man Show, showcases his past successes and excitement for more musical experimentation in the future.

Unlike live albums that bear heavy editing, One Man Show encompasses an entire September 1, 2012 show from Des Moines, Iowa. According to Buckingham, the mix is "taken right off the console mix, with a couple of room mikes added in. It's live and raw, with no post-production." The result is a very intimate listening experience, sounding as if he is performing right in your living room. During the show, Buckingham draws from his group and solo years, re-imagining familiar hits and unearthing little-known album tracks. The entire album provides a rare peek into his creative process, his ability to lay his emotions bare in songs and even his often pounding guitar work.

Highlights include the aforementioned "Not Too Late," a wistful track off his 2003 solo album Under the Skin. His lyrics embody characteristics of insecurity about aging and his legacy: "Reading the paper, saw a review/ Said I was a visionary, but nobody knew/ Now that's been a problem/ Feeling unseen," he wails plaintively. His hit single "Trouble" benefits from a much slower tempo and stripped-down arrangement, with Buckingham pitching down his voice to make the line "I think I'm in trouble" sound more ominous. Unlike the upbeat original, here he hestiates at diving headfirst into love's troubled waters. "It's been so long since I held ya/ I've forgotten what love is for," he sings, letting his voice tremble with desperation.

One track that undergoes a radical transformation is "Big Love," the 1987 Fleetwood Mac hit from Tango in the Night. The original suffered from over-bloated production; to rectify this wrong, Buckingham turns it into a virtual exorcism. His throbbing guitar lines propel the song (often sounding as if two or more guitarists are plucking along), his voice soars and dips, growling and screaming, adding new meaning to the lines "I wake up alone/ With it all/ I wake up/ But only to fall." Anyone who doubts Buckingham's talent as a guitarist need only listen to the track to be convinced.

To satisfy the crowd, Buckingham includes the iconic Fleetwood Mac song "Go Your Own Way"; though he has undoubtedly performed this track several times, he still conjures up images of love gone sour by snarling words like "shacking up's all you want to do." At the same time, he demonstrates his ability to write tender, delicate songs as well, such as the underrated Rumours song "Never Going Back Again" or the lovely instrumental "Stephanie."

In sum, One Man Show serves as a master class in songwriting, musicianship, and singing. Buckingham has always been in a class of his own, forging his own unique creative path. This thoroughly enjoyable concert celebrates these qualities, and also demonstrates that he still has much music left in him.

RATING FOR LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM: ONE MAN SHOW

Stripped down to bare essentials, the songs more readily reveal their emotional essences—adorable and ugly—for the candid scrutiny of a one-take, untouched console recording.

not sure where's the best place for this interview, but since it's supporting OMS release and not much new didn't want to make a separate thread:

Lindsey Buckingham: “You Have To Take Risks… Even At The Risk Of Diminishing Commerce”
December 3, 2012 10:16 PM

Buckingham/Nicks, Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham, One Man Show
Lindsey Buckingham has just released One Man Show, a solo acoustic live album, taken from his first tour in that format. The track listing spans his career; it includes “Trouble” from his solo debut, 1981’s Law And Order, his 1984 hit “Go Insane,” “Seeds We Sow” from his 2011 album of the same name and a number of Fleetwood Mac classics, including “Never Going Back Again,” “Big Love,” “So Afraid” and “Go Your Own Way.” There’s even “Stephanie,” from the Buckingham/Nicks album that he did with Stevie Nicks before they joined Fleetwood Mac.

Buckingham famously quit Fleetwood Mac in 1987, just after the release of Tango In The Night, partially because he wanted to focus on his own records. Since rejoining the band in 1997, he’s remained prolific on his own, releasing three solo albums and touring frequently (One Man Show is his third live release during the same time period).

He tells CBS Local, “Doing the amount of solo work that I’ve done in the past decade, it clearly is kind of the antidote to the experiences I was repeatedly having in Fleeetwood Mac for years, where I would try to work on a solo album and get it out, and (the solo songs) would either be co-opted because of group pressure, or it would be set aside. And that’s fair enough too, because if you’re in a band, you’ve got to be a band member in good standing and you have to keep the big picture in mind.”

He says that these days, he has hit a good balance between working solo and being in the band. And, he points out, his solo work is ultimately good for Fleetwood Mac: “It allows me to bring back something into the band that I might not have otherwise. I keep growing as an artist, and keep pushing my limits a bit, in a way which I couldn’t do in Fleetwood Mac.”

He points out that there’s a big difference between what he does on his own, and what he does with the group. “What I do as a solo artist is kind of tapping into the left side of the palate, the more esoteric side of things. So I think inherent in that is losing a greater portion of the people who might be Fleetwood Mac fans for different reasons. Obviously it’s the difference between playing in an arena and playing in a theater.”

He’s fine with playing to smaller crowds on his own. “That’s always part of the equation when you get to a certain level of popularity, there’s kind of a corporate mentality that kicks in,” and he mentions the need to uphold the band’s “brand.” “(But) it isn’t necessarily the best adage to follow as an artist. You have to kind of remember who you are, and you have to be taking risks, even at the risk of diminishing commerce. That’s sort of the equation I’ve been living for many years and have somehow managed to strike a balance between what I call ‘the big machine’ and ‘the small machine.’ At this point they support each other, and it’s a good place to be. “

One Man Show is availble now, exclusively at iTunes.

I agree. I'm extremely disappointed in the song selections. He said he was seeing what works. If he does another acoustic tour and hasn't made drastic changes to the setlist, it's over. It's OVER.

:nod:I was mimicking Stevie, but not her talking to Lindsey. I was copying her talking to Christine. When she was telling Christine she better not let Lindsey sing duet on Hold Me in the limo. Hilarious.

When I saw the headline "Lindsey Buckingham: You Have to Take Risks..." I thought it was going to be an article about the writer taking issue with Lindsey's lack of risks in regard to the set list for his live album! Silly me.

It's one thing to perform certain songs to death in live performances, but it's another thing to rehash and sell those same songs over and over (in various versions).
He has a strong core fan base who support him, and are largely responsible for the sales of his records and concert tours. It's not unreasonable to think that they (we) probably already have several live versions of most of songs featured on his recent live album release.

Does he ever think of that? Or feel the slightest embarrassment of reselling the same songs to the same audience? Maybe the little machine can let go of the big machine songs. They will never go away, so no one is missing them!

I wonder if financial returns are at a higher rate with particular songs that get released in live form. That would explain the motivation as to why we get such an exclusively small group of songs that seem to be "must haves" in any compilation or live album. "Have we got anymore dreams to sell?"

Why Lindsey Buckingham Went His Own Way
By Crash 17 hours ago

After Fleetwood Mac decided not to tour in 2012, Lindsey Buckingham packed his bags and hit the road with just his tour manager, a roadie and sound engineer — and the result is his new album, One Man Show. He says, “It just turned out to be a really satisfying thing for me… I’m really quite proud of it.”

Although they recorded every night of the tour, Buckingham says the September 1st show in Des Moines, Iowa really stuck out. The only thing that needed to be done in post-production was to to tighten the pace between songs.

Available exclusively on iTunes, One Man Show contains 13 songs spanning Buckingham’s career, including such Fleetwood Mac staples as “Never Going Back Again,” “Big Love,” “I’m So Afraid” and “Go Your Own Way.”

Buckingham and the Mac will begin rehearsals for their spring tour on February 15th in Los Angeles.

Reviews are favourable and that is a proof of Lindsey's force on his own .

“Cast Away Dreams” from his fourth studio album, Under the Skin, opens Lindsey Buckingham’s new live solo album, One Man Show. “Bleed to Love Her,” one of those tunes that sees Fleetwood Mac’s guitar player/vocalist/songwriter/producer using his fantastic finger-picking technique (and odd vocal warble) follows. There’s more (and better) finger picking and a nice Lindsey vocal on “Not Too Late,” probably the best of these opening tunes here. But really, the man’s working up to expert finger picking on the instrumental song, “Stephanie.”

We’re into echoey electric and sexy vocals on “Come,” the first of the Fleetwood Mac tunes here and the first to feature some double-track rhythm so Lindsey can get in some live lead playing. There’s a super cool, dramatic, slower take on Lindsey’s second solo album’s title track “Go Insane” and perfect echoey finger picking on “Never Going Back Again.” But we’re soon back to the complete crazy kinetic finger picking and those famous, slightly orgasmic ooh’s and ah’s of the usual Lindsey live solo Fleetwood Mac concert staple, “Looking Out For Love.” Again, we get some leading over a live looped rhythm guitar on “So Afraid” (not the best tune here) and a distorted, over-driven (with both looped rhythm and vocal backing) take on the infamous “Go Your Own Way.”

For me, it’s Lindsey’s quiet take on “Trouble,” from his first solo album, and the title track from his last album, Seeds We Sow, that make this night recorded in Des Moines, IA not so very long ago, super special.

Critic's picks: Lindsey Buckingham, 'One Man Show,' and Mike Cooley, 'The Fool on Every Corner'

What we have here are two realities of the digital age: a pair of splendidly recorded solo acoustic records by singer/songsmith/guitarists known far more for their work as members of cherished rock troupes than for music issued under their own names. Both works are available almost exclusively as downloads.

The first is Lindsey Buckingham's One Man Show, a near exact replica, right down to the between-song banter, of the program the Fleetwood Mac frontman gave at the Lexington Opera House in November. Regardless of such a steadfast repertoire, this is a blistering set mostly because Buckingham obliterates the concept of what a solo acoustic concert can be.

One Man Show is not some folkie reinvention of Buckingham's music in and out of Fleetwood Mac. It is rather what its title implies: an unaccompanied rock parade that just happens to acoustic. From Buckingham's ageless vocal howl to guitarwork that exerts itself with dizzying exactness, the record is steeped in frenzy.

It doesn't matter if the music stews in the brooding intensity of Go Insane, Never Going Back Again and So Afraid or boils over with the hopped-up drive of Big Love, where the guitar runs sound positively caffeinated. Either way, Buckingham presents One Man Show as a restless joyride.

While Big Mac faves make up roughly half the album, Buckingham fleshes out the remainder with some genuine surprises. From the early '70s comes the pre-Fleetwood Mac instrumental Stephanie, One Man Show's lone statement of solace. But the real treats comes by way of three tunes from Buckingham's underrated 2007 solo album, Under the Skin, highlighted by the bittersweet departure meditation Cast Away Dreams.

As of now, One Man Show is only available through iTunes.

Mike Cooley's The Fool on Every Corner is an altogether calmer beast. As one of the two primary vocalist/guitarists for Drive-By Truckers, Cooley has helped provide a new-generational voice for Southern rock 'n' roll. But unlike Truckers co-chieftain Patterson Hood, who regularly tours and records on his own, Cooley is relatively new when it comes to performance life outside the band.

As such, The Fool on Every Corner is a relaxed and slightly boozy compendium of songs Cooley has written for the Truckers along with one new entry, Drinking Coke and Eating Ice. The resulting record is pulled from solo concerts given last year in Atlanta.

Bolstered by Truckers faves Three Dimes Down, Where the Devil Don't Stay and Shut Up and Get on the Plane, the album bares its barroom spirit readily with a loose, often whispery performance feel that sounds like vintage Willie Nelson, but with a darker, more rural slant.

The Fool on Every Corner will be issued later this month on vinyl but it is readily available now through all major digital music outlets.
