"Kicking & Dreaming," however, isn't about settling scores, though the gossipy aspects are certainly fun. One such story recalls a crazy night in the 1980s in which the Wilsons spent hours in Stevie Nicks' closet trying on her "millions of shawls and colored tights," only to realize they couldn't keep up with their fellow rocker's voracious appetite for various substances.

Stevie was one "bad ass" drug user. Growing up in the 70's and listening to her and Fleetwood Mac's music, I really must have been naive. I really never thought of them as this hard partying band. A little weed and alchohol yes, but the drug use was way more than my teenage brain could fathom. :]:]

Even today, I still don't think of them as . . . well, of course, they used drugs, but in my head I still think of bands like the Stones as much worse than the FMers. If Keith Richards ever says he couldn't keep up with Stevie, I'll keel over.

Heart’s Nancy Wilson Discusses ‘Kicking & Dreaming’ Their Way To Rock & Roll Success
by: Matt Wardlaw
When I spoke with Ann, I mentioned how you don’t take a lot of lead vocals on the songs, but when you do, you really make them count. You’ve had one solo album outside of Heart. Have you ever had the desire to have more of a vocal voice in the group?
Well you know, I’m just one of those guitar players who loves to sing, but I’ve never thought of myself as a lead singer, per se. I just really love singing and harmony singing is my favorite singing. ‘These Dreams’ was sort of a fluke in a way. It was our first number one hit and it was just one of those songs that I could not resist and I fought for the opportunity to be able to do that in our band and then it turned into our first number one song and suddenly there was all of this attention on me as a singer that I wasn’t very comfortable with.
Now, I approach it as a player, so singing is just kind of like gravy for me. It’s the extra fun once in awhile. It’s an extra fun aspect that adds to the dimension of the band. It brings another dimension into the band that I think is good. It’s kind of like in Fleetwood Mac, there’s the occasional [vocal from] Christine Mcvie [in addition to regular vocalists Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham] that gives you somewhere else to go [that’s] probably a little softer, a little bluesier over here and then [it goes] back to Stevie and I think it helps the band be more multi-dimensional.
That’s one of the things about the new record is that I think that there’s some interesting color and hearing you trade vocals with Ann on ‘’59 Crunch,’ I don’t feel like I’ve heard you do that before in that way and certainly, not a lot. Was that something new for you?

Umm, yeah, that's weird. I'm pretty sure the lead singing was split up pretty equally among the three vocalists. Odd thing to say...

I'm assuming Nancy didn't say the stuff in the brackets - that's stuff the writer added to give it context, which to me made it come off weirder than it would have been otherwise, like if you just read it as; "It's kind of like in Fleetwood Mac, there's the occasional Christine that gives you somewhere else to go that's a little softer, a little bluesier over here and then back to Stevie and I think it helps the band be more multi-dimensional."
It's kind of unclear whether she's talking about switching vocalists between songs, or switching vocalists within a song, but I can see what she means. Aside from the use of 'occasional' as an adjective (which really doesn't entirely make sense) then she's just alluding to the fact that Christine's songs often served as a counter to the more intense songs by the others - "Christine the popstar, Lindsey the gnarly gnome, Stevie the miserable, philosophical fairy", etc. Isn't that what so many people missed on SYW?

Why do they have to say that they couldn't keep up with Stevie's voracious appetite for various substances, or drugs? That just makes Ann and Nancy look as if they're trying to make themselves look better by putting another person down.

I know. It would have been enough just to tell us about the foray into Stevie's closet.
On the other hand, Stevie can do stuff like that herself. She has said how innocent she and Lindsey were and how they had to keep up with the English guys. She can give the impression that if John, Mick and Christine hadn't been such hardcore degenerates, Stevie would simply have been hitting Earl's English Grey Tea really hard.

Idk, I think it depends on how the book tells the story. The person who wrote the article made it seem as if Ann and Nancy were randomly saying in the book that she did WAY MORE cocaine than them, but there must be a longer story attached to it. I haven't read the book, but I could just see them telling the story about they night they spent trying on Stevie's stuff and doing so much coke that they had never been that high before and then a reporter turns that into Ann and Nancy couldn't keep up with Stevie's drug habit! I just can't see either of them randomly bringing up Stevie's drug use to make them look better. But who knows! Maybe kak125 will post the story from the book!

I actually just read the Stevie part in the book last night. In the passage in the book they are talking about how wild things got in the mid to late 80's and how coke was everywhere. They say how everyone in the band was doing their share of drugs and alcohol. Ann says that no one in the band did anything until after the show. She says that she was doing more drinking and coke than others in the band, then she tells the Stevie story.

Wonder where she said this. Seems odd that all of a sudden she's going to try and downplay her drug past. It's not like the book says that Stevie was a mess and an embarrassment, they just tell of hanging out with her, getting high and trying on clothes.

She said it today at the Q&A thing before the film screening. She said that they weren't best friends really and that she thought what they wrote in their book was private.

I read the book last week...and am a big fan of Heart...that being said..
I felt they portrayed Stevie in an odd manner....no mention whatsoever of her musical talents or her massive contribution as a woman in rock...it bothered me..and I can see Stevie's point...I thought it rather rude.
They had plenty to say of the talent of Alice In Chains though...while mentioning their partying....

I adore Stevie but she really does try to manipulate her image and I think she can be very controlling about what people say about her. I've always gotten the sense that everyone around her chooses their words carefully in public because I think if you say something she doesn't like she can just freeze you out. On the one hand I totally understand that, but on the other hand it can turn into a very distorted reality.
It seems like lately she (or Liz Rosenberg or whomever) has made ground rules for interviews that they get to edit whatever is produced before it goes out... for example that journalist who reported turning over his tape to her team and getting it back with a statement she made about Lindsey edited out, and on the videos folks have posted from her session at the Hamptons Film Festival she herself talks about having just done an I Heart Radio thing and having a window of 72 hours to listen to her interview and edit it to her liking.
I understand why artists and their mgmt might want to do that but I think they and we lose some objectivity when they are allowed to .

I don't think there's anything wrong with it being in the book, but I understand Stevie not liking it. As a reader, I'm glad for the little snippet, all FM news is good to put in our vault. However, as the subject of that snippet, I would be annoyed, think they had nerve and resent them using my name to try to spice up their little book.

Honestly, I understand Stevie completely here. I agree that she can be ridiculous and stubborn and quit silly sometimes, but she's honest and straight-up about how she feels. She has every right to say that she didn't like being in the book. Personally, like most people have, I've made about a million mistakes and bad life choices and been involved in a ton of really stupid situations, and I know that. But I really wouldn't be happy if 40 years from now people were still writing about it and discussing it and asking me about it in every interview. Stevie's coke habit lasted for what, 14 or so years? Meanwhile she had a good 25ish years before that where she never did drugs, and then was clean off coke for another 25 years after that. But because of that much smaller segment of her life where she was using drugs, it's arguably one of things she's most famous for and most often asked about. It has to have gotten very old by now and she's probably sick of listening to other people tell her how much drugs she was consuming. She knows and that's all that matters. I think it's perfectly fair for her to say she doesn't like it, and I like that she's honest about her feelings.
That being said, I agree that Ann & Nancy did not mean any harm by writing it, and it's really no big deal. In fact I adore Heart. I don't think they meant to upset her at all.

I don't really see what it could add to the book. It seems like a knock at Stevie, and to what end? Is there more to the story, or do they just want everyone to know that Stevie did a lot of drugs, which is not a newsflash for anybody.

I think they were just using it as an example about how crazy drug usage was in those days and how they couldn't even keep up. I didn't read it yet, but I plan to. That's just what the gist was that i've heard about so far. If anybody has the book, i'd love for you to elaborate.

I wouldn't say Stevie didn't do drugs until she did coke. She's smoked pot forever and still does (which sort of blows my mind re: her voice) as well as numerous other substances. It was just the coke that took over her life (until Klonopin).

I don't really mind that she smokes pot. I think when you've spent so many years completely tranquilized, and many other years under the influence of 'pot and brandy', a joint now and then really isn't much. I know she used to take a shot of tequila before shows in 2001 to chill out the stage fright, maybe she uses pot in the same way. I wouldworry for her voice if it was an everyday thing but I think if she still tokes, it's probably not that often.
What I wish she would quit are the cigarettes. I know there's debate about whether she smokes occasionally or not, but i've talked to multiple people who have seen her lighting up long after 97. Maybe she just needs one now and then. I'm a smoker myself (I'm aware, it's an idiotic habit), but I'm not 64 and I don't have a career that relies on my voice. If I did, I'd never light up again.
But she's a stubborn little thing.

Well I sort of agree with you. One life lesson that we all need to learn is that you can't do or say something and then expect other people not to talk about it. Still, I'd like to see the actual text to see how it reads. From the information we have now, it just seems like taking a shot for the sake of taking a shot.

Stevie said she doesn't want to write about the nitty gritty stuff. She's gonna write about all of the amazing moments, how things began, etc. So I guess that's why she feels she can say that - because she's not going to write about any of the "bad stuff" so she wishes other people wouldn't either (at least, not the stuff involving her ).

took the words right out of my mouth . all they did was tell a story as it happened , the need to white wash everything to is absolutely BS , the lesson here is no matter who you are what ever you do will come back eventually, you can't change history .
Especially now with video cameras built in to phones and the personal stuff people post /tweet , like some one just said the graduating class this year buy the time they are 30 will have posted or sext a naked photo of them self at least once.

I don't know. Maybe they thought of it as a type of measurement. Like, "I was a big drinker but John Wayne could drink even me under the table." I don't think it was related with any bitterness or malice. I don't see it as a swipe, but as Stevie I still would find it gratuitous to have it in there and I would not be pleased. As a reader, I think it's just dandy.
I don't think it's wrong for Stevie to complain about it. Complaints are not censorship. They have a right to put it in the book and she has a right to say she doesn't like its insertion. I don't see either side as being in the wrong.

I own the book...and like I said before...it was just odd..
Nancy went out of her way to say that Stevie's house looked like a shrine to herself...then said they didn't know how to do drugs like Stevie...I just find it hard to believe they didn't know how to go up and come back down with another susbstance.
Ann later says when she adopted her baby girl that she thought she had already paid her dues staying up all night when she tried to party with Stevie..
I love Heart but it was rudely pointed....Stevie is not the only artist to fall on their double edged sword in the book.
Execpt Alice In Chains...they partyed together constantly but were apparently super talented so that made up for it...

Well, she's certainly taken her fair share of shots at Lindsey over the years and am certain she didn't clear any of them with him beforehand... And she's taken her shots at Mick as well. But I think Stevie's problem with it is that she wasn't very close with Ann or Nancy. If she had been best friends with them, I think she would expect them to write about her (she never complained about Mic including her in his book), but instead they just partied a few times and instead of mentioning anything good about her, rather they discussed a party they had with her and how she was way more of a drug addict than them. I love Heart, but I can see why Stevie is a little confused as to why they put her in the book. She clearly was not a big part of their life, they clearly did not look up to her as an inspiration, and so the only reason it seems they put her in the book it to use her as a name drop to bring in some more readers or use her to make themselves look better. Either way, they didn't talk about Stevie to tell a story, they used Stevie for other reasons so I can understand why she would prefer they left her out.

Well, she's certainly taken her fair share of shots at Lindsey over the years and am certain she didn't clear any of them with him beforehand... And she's taken her shots at Mick as well. The only one I don't recall her taking any shots at in the band has been Christine.... but I'd be afraid of doing that too!
During the SYW promotion she did say a couple of things. They weren't shots exactly, but it made me think there was a little feeling of rejection surrounding Christine.
She said that during The Dance even Christine could see that Stevie and Lindsey just wanted to sing alone. That made it sound like the two of them together again made Christine feel like an outsider.
Then, in another interviewer Stevie said Christine didn't want to be in the band 'and if that's what Christine wants, then that's what Christine gets.'
Just a transitory comment that suggested more to me than Stevie actually said. I sensed a little upset. I don't think Stevie meant it in any kind of longlasting way at all, but I do remember a couple of instances where I felt she was feeling a little "so there" towards Christine. But bottom line is I believe, with the exception of Mick, they all were a little hurt by Christine leaving. Like a lover saying, "it's not you it's me." It might be the truth, but it smarts. They know Christine did it for her own needs and reasons and it wasn't because she hated their guts and Lindsey even said as much: that he empathized with her decision. He said he knew how Christine felt having left himself, but I think they still felt a little rejected. Stevie, John and Lindsey.

She didn't say anything negative about Christine at all though. Quite the contrary.

I remember being in the audience during an SYW show and a guy in back of me said when he first saw it, he didn't even notice that Christine was gone because Brett kind of looked like her and even had the same hair style. Huh?
What Stevie said about being able to go on because their stage set was the same kind of made me think of that comment.
It would be so hilarious if she said she didn't like the Cage tour because the stage set was different and there were 2 men there instead of just one guitarist and one of them was a red head, so that really threw her off.

Hmm.. maybe some residual unhappiness that Chris left her on her own with "the boys"..? Stevie and Chris were, certainly for some period, a powerful political unit (for lack of a better term) in the band. I'm sure Christine's leaving left Stevie in a less defined role at least for a time.
Totally agree that there seems still to be a residue of hurt and disbelief on some level within the band that Christine would want to leave. (I personally applaud Christine for not making her career everything).
I didn't get the sense that Christine left because she was tired of being in the band or working with the band members, but that her real fear of flying was just never going to fit with the bands gung ho touring schedule.

Sorry.....love Stevie to death, but I can't support her on this one....it happened, deal with it! You think that when Stevie gets around to writing the book she's been promising for years that SHE'S clearing every little story with everyone involved?!?
I SERIOUSLY doubt it!I think I agree with you. Stevie wants to change history all the time it seems. Even if she does finally write that 'book' and only puts the 'best' parts than personally I'd feel cheated. She doesn't have to 'tell' all but she does need to be honest about some of the bad parts as well. Not everyone's life is all 'good' & 'fluff'. To me that would be dishonest. You have to have tell the good with the bad they go hand in hand period. At least IMO anyway. I guess she can tell it her way which I guess is fine. It is what it is. I agree about the deal with it too. You can't censor everyone. Stevie can't censor Ann & Nancy --well I guess she could sue them but I hope not that would be sad really. I did think they were friends at least somewhat. Or at one time?:D

I think that Stevie has been open and honest about her past drug abuse. Since The Dance she has been asked the same questions over and over. She has admitted that she was an addict. She has been clean since '94, and is done talking about it and I don't blame her. She has moved on... I think the point she was trying to make was that if you wish to rehash that part of her life, go and dig thru all those old articles and read it over and over until your as high as she was back then. If and when she writes her bio, she wants to tell you the story of all the amazing things that she has been truely blessed to have experienced. Wow! What a life she has lived. She wants the reader to see what her eyes have seen from the perspective she has now that she is older, wiser, and sober. She has lived thru the hell of her addictions and was lucky enough to have survived. If your holding your breath for a juicy, tell all full of freaky sex and mountains of coke and pills, it won't be written or authorized by Mama...:sorry:

I think you're right. Also, I would be happy with that kind of book because it would be more positive than a tell-all gossip fest. I love Ann and Nancy to death. They are probably my favorite women in rock behind Stevie, but I am a little more than half-way through their book and I'm becoming less and less interested in reading it. I'm kind of disappointed that they chose to write a book with the snarky gossipy bits included. That doesn't seem to be their style in other aspects of their lives, so I'm not sure why they chose to include the dirt in their book. I was thinking with regard to some of the male artists they talk about, that they are trying to emphasize the sexism that they experienced ALL THE TIME, but what about Stevie? Why include as one of your only meaningful encounters with her, an emphasis on her drug addiction? Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I'm not the biggest fan of tell-all books when it comes to my favorite musicians. I guess I'm more interested in the music, how it was made, the inspiration for it, the artists' background and how they grew up, etc. I'm not particularly interested in who was the biggest asshole and who did the most drugs. I mean really, who cares? And with regard to Stevie, it's pretty common knowledge that she was a big-time drug addict back in the day, so no news there. I think they bring it up because they are forever trying to downplay their own drug use throughout the book. It's all "oh THEY did a mountain of drugs and we were asked and said "no." I'm sure they did their own fair share too.

This is all silliness. Ann and Nancy are telling their story, and that story sometimes includes other people. They have every right to say who they did drugs with and how much, if they feel like doing so. It was no longer just Stevie's business when she included others in her activites.
Stevie might not like it, but it's not her choice to be included - or not - in someone else's book. If there's such a problem with the story and she feels misrepresented, well, that's what slander and libel suits are for.

I agree. It's Ann & Nancy's story as well. However, I believe the part that was most distasteful (looking from Stevie's POV) and gossipy about Ann & Nancy's recounting was that they additionally added for seemingly dramatic effect that they "couldn't keep up with their fellow rocker's voracious appetite for various substances."

She talked about it in at the first Q&A for the IYD Doc in New York.
"I went on the road with Ann and Nancy for a week and we just had a ball. We did a lot of drugs, and we had a great time. And you know what? I think they wrote about it, and I wish they hadn't. Because I thought that that was private. I happen to have an amazing respect for Ann Wilson; I think she is one of the best singers in the world, I think she is right there behind Robert Plant. I think that Nancy Wilson is - and I've told her - right there behind Lindsey Buckingham, Waddy Wachtel, Dave Stewart, those amazing guitar players. I love these girls. I would have preferred that they had left me out of the book. 'Cause we weren't best friends our whole life. We spent a little time together and we influenced each other, but I would have preferred they had left me out of their book."

Stevie was upset. I was in the audience at the "afternoon talk w Stevie" before her IYD screening in the Hamptons and someone in the audience asked her if she knew about Hearts mention of her in their book. Stevie was respectful towards Ann & Nancy but very icy about what she thought was such a personal interaction being included in said book.

I wonder if she puts Lindsey, Waddy and Dave right there behind Eric Clapton. Just before she did Vegas that first time, she was extolling Eric's virtues and I was waiting for her to start comparing him with other guitarists, especially since she was angry with Lindsey at the time.

I think we shouldn't take Stevie quite so literal about this subject. I don't believe its all in her head. Lindsey just keeps his mouth shut with cameras around so his wife doesn't beat him over his head w/ his favorite guitar (wouldn't want to damage that axe). Even Mick said some things in those interviews after or around the end of the Unleashed tour "...does it still sorta happen ...yes it does ...." Anyway cut her some slack. I will volunteer to spend time around both of them next February during rehearsals to see if the magic is still kinda:D there or not....lol

All she said was that Ann and Nancy would not be a vignette in her book because, she would write only about the "Romantic" and "Magical" times!!
Maybe she does'nt wish to write about this time in her life because as she said many times "Everyone already knows"!
I thought she was very articulate with her answer regarding the "Book" by the Wilson Sisters and was very dignified and composed actually.

While not necessarily "best friends", maybe what Stevie's saying is that their time together was more important/significant to her than it apparently was to them...? She could have felt that being mentioned only in this context was belittling of the relationship, whatever it is/was.
That said I'm almost done with the book and quite like it. The Wilson's have always seemed like kind, polite, ladies and very appreciative of their fans. My impression of them hasn't changed despite a few bits of dirty laundry tossed in for good measure...

That isn't entirely true...he's made plenty of comments about how special she is to him, how they still have a bond, how when they get together it's just like when they were younger, blah blah blah. I also remember him getting a little real while re-hashing the issues of their breakup at the 92Y Q&A. He may not talk about it in the same grand, sweeping terms as Stevie...but it doesn't seem like he's much more "over it" than her either.

WHY would Stevie Nicks, who was THE one that was crowned "The Reigning Queen of Rock 'n' Roll" by Rolling Stone magazine, have sour grapes???:
I don't know whether Stevie's mad at the Wilsons or not. But why does everyone keep dredging up a magazine headline from a quarter-century ago? Does the fact that Rolling Stone wrote a headline for Heart, calling them "Rock's hottest sister act," mean anything more than marketing razzmatazz? Don't the magazine's editors write a headline for every cover? Is it meant to be taken quite so literally as an eternal credo? Rolling Stone called 50 Cent "the king of hip-hop." They called Jennifer Lawrence "America's kick-ass sweetheart." They called Lady Gaga "monster goddess." They called Snoop Dogg "America's most lovable pimp." They called Lil Wayne "rap's genius." Don't you guys recognize headline language when you see it? If you want to appreciate Stevie's poetry, you can't be oblivious to the various guises of rhetoric.
Besides, I always knew the Nicks headline was a kind of double-entendre. The full headline (to remind everyone) was "Out There With Stevie Nicks: The Reigning Queen of Rock & Roll and Her Magic Kingdom." The subtext is that Stevie is alluring, regal, and wicked-cool, but also a space cadet. That's what's meant by "Out There" (and by the Timothy White article itself, which talks about Stevie spending her time in Neverland, bringing along a pup tent, and how she lets the metaphors of fairy tales overtake her real life). She's the Queen of Rock & Roll, but she's the queen of a "magic kingdom," a fairy tale, an illusion.

Umm, I'm pretty sure Stevie isn't boycotting The Wilson Sisters. She just preferred they hadn't mentioned her in their book. And what they mentioned wasn't that earth-shattering. They did coke and partied in the 80's with Stevie. Big whoop. Didn't we all know that Stevie did coke in the 80's? I see this as no new revelation. However, Stevie may have a point in that they weren't best friends. Why are the Wilsons mentioning her at all? It's name-dropping. They mention many people they brushed up against in their career. That is not really all that impressive. I like Stevie's idea of her biography only mentioning the magical moments because those are the only moments that really matter. Who cares if you met John Mellencamp for five minutes and he was a dick? And again, I am a huge fan of The Wilsons, but I don't agree with all the choices they made in this book.

Sure and the more people you mention, the more music fans you make aware of your book. I may not care anything about Heart, but if I am Rolling Stones fan, I probably check out all rock books just to see if there's any news about Jagger in them. There's a small chance I might even buy it. I bought Anne Heche's book because of the Lindsey stuff and I wouldn't even have known about it otherwise. So, you cram in as much as you can.
Even in that Playboy interview I found myself wondering if Mick's George Harrison discussion was strategic. Listen, I KNOW he was friends with him and was even quasi related to him. I just hadn't heard Mick talk about George that much in the past (Clapton yes, but not George Harrison) and wondered if he did it so that more people would talk about his interview.
They name drop to generate buzz and they make it salacious when they can. I don't think it's any big deal, but I can definitely see why Stevie wouldn't like it.

Wow, I think you're seriously overreacting. Stevie isn't boycotting them, she simply commented that she didn't like them using her name in their book, fair enough. Sure, it's not very classy from the Wilsons, but if they wanna name a bunch of people in their book that they've dealt with in their career, than they have every right to do so.

Of course, that didn't exactly stop the partying. Ann - who has been upfront about her struggles with addiction - wrote of a night of excess with Stevie Nicks, who didn't take kindly to the name-check.
"Stevie Nicks turned out to be pretty grumpy about our party night together," Ann says. "We just put it in there because it wasn't anything, really. It was just a pretty typical party night in the '80s that rockers would have. But she was pretty sensitive, so perhaps we should have spared her."
Ann may have spared the Nicks story, but she certainly wouldn't un-write the whole book, which she describes as "cathartic" to pen.

I think of Dreamboat Annie as equally important to the 1975 Fleetwood Mac album, then and now. How strange the two sides of the same coin would be scratching away about next to nothing. Magic Man, Crazy On You, Over My Head and Rhiannon were all over the radio here circa 1975-76 onward. Is Olivia Newton John going to start something with Pat Benetar next? Debbie Harry rip Joan Jett a new one?
My boyfriend (accidentally) got to see Nancy in the raw once; really hard to imagine her fitting into anything Stevie had on the hanger. :D

From an interview with Ann Wilson from a Nuvo interview by Katherine Coplen July 27, 2013
http://www.nuvo.net/indianapolis/hearts-ann-wilson-talks-women-new-book/Content?oid=2642027
Really? I think Stevie needs to get over it. We all know she did it, there's nothing really new in the story except maybe it's a bit more detailed and specific than what she would ever have told us. She's just a real control freak over her image and she wants NOTHING out there other than what she chooses to say. She is soooooooooooooooooo lucky that this is not 1978 now, because with all the social media and paparazzi etc etc she would not get away with even a fraction of the partying and man-izing (opposite of womanizing?) she did. There'd be pics of her sloshed out of her head, smudged makeup, falling out of a car, whatever.
Love her, but really, get over it.

Speaking of that, with Mick Jagger's birthday and the Stones' being on tour and everything, there are a lot of articles about them recently and it's mindboggling not only how many women he's been with (well he's had kids with more women than most men even sleep with) but how many of those women also slept with not one, but TWO of his bandmates. Why do people even talk about FM as a band with a lot of sex in it when they can't even compare to the Stones? Probably all 16 members of FM combined haven't done 20% of the sleeping around and changing partners that the Stones have done.

I think they were just using it as an example about how crazy drug usage was in those days and how they couldn't even keep up.
That's plainly what it was --- I don't understand why anyone would get their panties in a twist about it!
There was absolutely no agenda to defame Stevie, no hidden motives, and simply no revelations of anything we didn't already know.
Anecdotal information appears in biographies; it's what makes them interesting! I was excited to read about Stevie in any context.
I have a lot of respect for the Wilson sisters. Stevie should not care at all about her brief mention in their book. By making a public statement against it, she's only bringing more attention to it!
This brings to my mind the fans yearning for Stevie to write an autobiography. If she ever approached the idea, consider how white-washed, navel-gazing and boring it would be if many famous names weren't referenced, and life experiences were sanitized beyond reality. This is why some talented his is why some biographer/writer out there should tackle a book like that. Consequently, many fans who read the book will inevitably want to tackle that writer.
Most autobiographies are heavily embellished, but Stevie's would be glaringly obvious, much like her post-filmed close-ups in the Tango in the Night and Red Rocks DVDs.

But even if they didn't talk about it, it seems like other people would talk about it, if they were sleeping with everyone under the sun. I mean, I know they've slept with a lot of people we don't know about, but I'm thinking it can't really be hundreds and thousands of people, unless sleeping with them is such an awful, boring and humiliating thing that no one wants to admit to it.

I absolutely love Heart and Stevie, so for me it's always thrilling to read they have crossed paths at some point in their careers. Its a shame that the other times Ann and Nancy met Stevie have not been mentioned in the book,... like how Grace Slick and Stevie went to see Heart live in concert in 1985 and got up on stage to provide backup vocals to Heart's "What About Love". Or when Stevie met up with Ann and Nancy after a Heart concert in the early 1980s (1981 i think) and went back to Ann's rental house and they jammed all night, and Ann, upon seeing Nancy and Stevie sat on the couch together, was inspired to pen the song title "Bright Light Girl" (from Heart's Private Audition album), because Ann commented on how ethereal and bright Nancy and Stevie looked while sitting together (both being "bright" blonde).
Ann and Nancy met Stevie, they were both sharing each other's time and therefore Ann and Nancy can write about their time, and if Stevie says they weren't best friends then i'm sure Stevie wouldnt' have done anything "private/secretive" in front of them. Life is about the people you meet, and the experiences you have, and if you ever had to write a autobiography, wouldn't you want to include the fact you met Stevie and saw all those legendary lamps around her gorgeous house and tried on her shawls!? lol! ...i'm sure not everyone has that opportunity!!
Autobiographies always mention other people living or deceased- theres no way of escaping billions of people in the world all your life..you're bound to meet a few haha, and if you're going to mention other people in your book then you'd mention what you did together! I think the book was enjoyable and tastefully done. But each to their own!

Well I just got Ann and Nancy Wilson's book Kicking and Dreaming on audiobook and I have to say it's pretty terrific. If you get the audible version, everyone who has something to tell reads their own part like Sue Ennis and Roger Fisher. Ann Wilson is a terrific reader. She just has a great voice.
I don't think Heart should of mentioned Stevie in their book. They made a few digs: First, Stevie's house was a shrine to Stevie Nicks because she filled it with pictures of herself. Second, that compared to Stevie and Fleetwood Mac, Heart didn't have a very bad drug problem. Also, Stevie had a system to take as many drugs as possible and they also sort of made Stevie out to be a Heart groupie. The whole thing is in bad taste. Stevie should be angry but love the book.

I don't know- it just sounds honest to me. Stevie was a mess back then. It's pretty well documented that she had some ego issues. Arguably still does to this day. And we all know how graphic Stevie herself has been about her cocaine use. She said in her 20/20 Downtown interview that she snorted coke every 15 minutes. That's pretty damned prodigious. Stevie has gone on record that she wishes Heart had not included her in their book. Which is just a bit odd to me. She's pretty much admitted all of these things about herself countless times before. I guess she just prefers to be the one talking about it.
Now if we're on the subject of people airing Stevie's dirty laundry, I can think of a couple of people who did overstep the line. Don Henley writing about Stevie's aborting their child, and Joe Walsh telling Howard Stern that he must have ****ed Stevie "a million billion times." Both of those instances were pretty tasteless.
^ Exactly. If you're going to write an autobiography, but then feel obliged to omit any mention of other people and your experiences with/impressions of them, you aren't going to be left with all that much to write about. They aren't "digs", they're experiences as the Wilsons remember them, which is what autobiographies are all about.

Well, I doubt that Stevie was a Heart groupie. They're flattering themselves. If they'd said "Heartbreaker" groupie that would be different.
I also am skeptical that Stevie and FM did more drugs than Heart, except for the fact that there were more members of FM with bigger hangers on. So there were more drugs in volume, but when you compare what was consumed by the individual people, I just don't buy that Stevie was a gigantic user compared to Ann and Nancy.

That is what I thought - their comments about Stevie were to make them look good. Ann was still doing cocaine in the 90s, so Stevie quit before her.
I do think was neat that Ann would not answer any of Courtney Loves messages. That was smart.

Meh, cheap shot at Stevie just to drum up talk about the book. If they want to talk about their own excesses, fine. But that was uncalled for. I'm sure they could have mentioned trying on the shawls, etc, without the snip at not being able to keep up with Stevie. Yes, Stevie did drugs. Ho hum, Wilson sisters. We know.

I know you've seen Stevie gush over all sorts of artists over the years. She drops their names publicly like they're hot. She loves linking herself to whomever is big at the moment. These days she talks about listening to Rihanna and such. Back in the 70s, I can easily see her cozying herself up to Heart.

Regarding Stevie's drug usage vs Heart's & anyone elses, obviously that's all speculation. Stevie has been remarkably open about her past- discussing how often she took drugs, the hole it burned through her septum, how she didn't even go to a doctor about it, but a plastic surgeon instead. Her drug usage is probably the most legendary of any rock star who lived to tell the tale. Was she actually any worse than her contemporaries, or is this all a carefully crafted retelling like her celebrity name dropping? It's a provocative question, for sure.

Except that time she said she'd choke Nicki Minaj to death, or the various times she's publicly berated Lindsay Lohan.
But generally, yeah... Stevie just likes linking herself to whoever is in the news at the moment. Whether it's Tom Petty, the Eagles, Snow Patrol, Sarah McLachlan, Rihanna, etc. With a couple of notable exceptions, she always heaps praise on whomever she name drops. :)

I think Stevie probably thought she was bonding with other female rockers, not being judged. When they mentioned her in the book the way they did, they turned her nice memory into a mistake.

Saying you like someone's music is not the same as being a "groupie." Groupie implies trying to socialize, to me. Yeah, she said she liked Katy Perry's tripe, but I don't think she been trying to hang around Katy. Yes, she is always name dropping Taylor Swift, even Prince, etc., but the "groupie" implication is different.
I know she loved to hang around Tom Petty, but I just don't see her consistently going out of her way to spend time in the company of Ann and Nancy Wilson.
There are some people who I think try to be a groupie to Stevie. I think Sheryl Crow has done this before. And Stevie does it no doubt herself, but I can't believe she was doing it to Heart.

I read Ann and Nancy's book and did notice a propensity to blame others for their own choices ..even their own very tacky and expedient sell out as a 1980s LA hair band which clearly they had to have acquiesced to themselves.

Hi all. A couple of posts back you guys were talking about Joe Walsh saying nasty stuff and Dave saying stuff about heavy partying.Where did you hear this?I thought I read every article about our girl but I must have missed some.I'd like to read them if anyone has a link. Thanks guys. And my view on this thread is that Stevie is just a total control freak.I mean she makes no bones about being a total drug addict-she even asked some interviewer if he wanted to see the hole in her nose-but SHE has to be the one who talks about it,not someone else without her permission.

Who cares? It wasn't a competition! It was of its time. No big deal. Rock stars. Heavy partying. Money. Indulgence. No surprise. Anne just made an observation that Stevie had a strong constitution to take a large amount of cocaine. There was no agenda in revealing that.

Perhaps, I would assume that taking that comment in isolation. Cumulatively, I think she did have an agenda.

What I really meant to say is that Stevie was not the focus of her book. But if you're going to write a book about your life, observations and experiences about/with other people are standard fare. That's what makes those books interesting!
I wish someone (other than Stevie) will write an extensive biography about Stevie. In the right hands, it would be brutely honest, showing her to be just as flawed as everyone else.; not a pandering puff piece.
