Beier Nabs Nicks Bio, Re-Ups Perrotta
Elizabeth Beier at St. Martin’s Press took North American rights to a biography of Stevie Nicks by Stephen Davis (author of Hammer of the Gods: The Led Zeppelin Saga). The book, which the publisher claims will be the “first comprehensive” take on the singer, is by the man who helped Nicks’s former bandmate, Mick Fleetwood, write his autobiography, which came out in 1990, Fleetwood: My Life and Adventures in Fleetwood Mac. (SMP said Davis first met Nicks in 1988, when he was traveling with Fleetwood Mac and working on that book.) David Vigliano and Anthony Mattero, at Vigliano Associates, represented Davis.
In a second deal for Beier this week, the editor inked Tom Perrotta (Election; Little Children) to a new three-book deal. (SMP is Perrotta’s longtime publisher.) The deal covers a short story collection and two novels; the collection, Nine Inches, is set for fall 2013. Beier took U.S., Canadian, and open market rights from agent Maria Massie at Lippincott Massie McQuilken. Perrotta is currently working on the series adaptation of his latest novel, The Leftovers, at HBO, which Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof is producing.

When Mr. Davis' biography of Carly Simon was published, he had this to say:
After the Guns N’ Roses book, my publisher said, "What do you want to do next?" I wanted to do a book about Stevie Nicks. But they said, "No, we’ll do her later, how about Carly Simon?" So I wrote to Carly and said "I’m doing this book, it’s gonna be sympathetic, and I already got an advance."
In the same article, when asked about future plans, he said, "I still want to do a book on Stevie Nicks." I guess he got his wish.

could be an autobiography by Stephen Davis is like the rock icon of writers to help rock stars right there biography as Mick used him back in 1990. I remember hearing when Stevie writes her book she will not tour but take on something different maybe focus on her artwork and do a touring art gallery where you can purchase her work. It doesn't surprise me though that an autobiography is in the works.

I know his Zeppelin book got great reviews, but I gotta say Mick's book wasn't all that impressive.....whole passages basically lifted from articles already written (and recognizable to any fan who's read all the original articles in Rolling Stone and elsewhere over the years). I'd love to see a really good book about Stevie, warts and all, but remain skeptical...... She might be someone about whom the real truth only comes out after she passes....

These are not encouraging words. That guy put together a book based on a lot of old newspaper and magazine articles. And I'm not saying that periodicals are not a good source of information. I devour them, but when you call yourself a biography writer, you can professionally rely on other sources, depending on what you're take from them. If you're pulling pivotal and selective quotes from them that's one thing, but if you're copying loads of descriptive text from them that's plagiarism.

Payers Only Love You When You’re Playing: Stevie Nicks Gets a Biography
Stevie Nicks has finally passed the milestone into the same sainthood with a new biography on the queen of Fleetwood Mac acquired by St. Martin’s Press.
Written by Stephen Davis, who met Ms. Nicks in the 90s when working on Mick Fleetwood’s autobiography, Fleetwood: My Life and Adventures in Fleetwood Mac, this new book will chronicle the songstress’ forty year career, including those ten years she spent shying away from the spotlight after the breakup of her band and the dissolution of both her major love affairs.
From the press release:
Nicks’ hard-rocking paeans to Welsh witches, seductive sorceresses, and lonely goddesses are a source of inspiration and mystery to millions of fans, even bringing to bear “The Night of 1000 Stevies” where her devotees dress in her trademark costumes. This long overdue biography will shed new light on her unreported early career, her tumultuous love affair sand private life, and struggles with drugs, and will make it clear that even today, Stevie Nicks is nobody’s heritage act.
The Night of 1000 Stevies sounds like a George Romero film, but hey, no judgement.
No word yet either, on the title, or whether Ms. Nicks has authorized this bio, but we’re sure it’s better than that docudrama that Lindsay Lohan planned on making when she tried to acquire the singer’s life rights. To which Stevie Knicks eloquently responded, “Over my dead body.”

That is the thing that is troubling to people..Mick supposedly had a hand in writing his book yet it still was full of magazine articles copied verbatim in leiu of his own recollections.I really doubt that Stevie will cooperate with this one so I expect it to be even more patched together than Mick's book was.Stevie really needs to do something preemptive and get together all those years worth of journals she has claimed to have kept and get started on her own autobiography. This being said I will read Davis's book .

From reading the reviews of some of his other books (including his recent Carly Simon biography), it seems that extensively quoting and/or paraphrasing old articles, etc, is standard practice for Mr. Davis and not confined to his work on Mick's autobiography.
Which is definitely disappointing, and makes me wonder how many of the articles previously quoted in 'Fleetwood,' will also be quoted in this release.

I agree. Even though Mick was "helped" by the old articles, that made the book more accurate and far interesting. It wasn't a collection of gossip and too partial feelings (something I felt in part with Carol Ann's book).
If Stevie authorizes and specially collaborates with this book, it would be far more interesting, but there is nothing mentioned in Stevie's official website.
I am not a fan of unauthorized bio's, too. Though there some interesting exceptions, like Bob Brunning's book.

I have never read such (nearly) unanimous hatred for anything on Amazon. I don't think Stephen Davis sets out to write nice things about nice people. He is going to dig through every nook and cranny to find the sensational dirt he needs to sell books. And as much as he screwed up the interpretations of Carly Simon's songs, I can only imagine what he will do with Stevie's infinitely more vague lyrics. Just like any gory car accident, I want to drive on... but I will be tempted to sneak a peek at this book.

Wow! You are correct about the level of hatred for the Carly Simon book. If that's the type of book he's going to write, I wish Stevie could stop it before it goes to press. The comment one of the reviewers made about Davis's interpretation of Carly's song "Jesse" made me shudder to think what Davis would read into Stevie's lyrics. :distress:

"Comprehensive" Stevie Nicks Biography Coming
6 August 2012
Stevie Nicks has yet to put pen to paper and write her own life story, but now someone else is doing it for her. PublishersWeekly.com reports that St. Martin’s Press will release what is described as “the first comprehensive” take on the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s life and career.
The book will be written by Stephen Davis, who helped Nicks’ Fleetwood Mac band mate Mick Fleetwood pen his 1990 autobiography. Davis, whose most famous work is probably the notoriously scandalous Hammer of the Gods: The Led Zeppelin Saga, first met Nicks in 1988 while traveling with Fleetwood Mac.
There’s no word on when the book will hit stores.

When I saw that this was the same guy who wrote Mick's book I can't help thinking about that infamous 90's era interview where Stevie is in the purple velvet catsuit (well, okay, it might have been a dress but it looks like a catsuit to me) where she's asked about Mick's book and replies (paraphrasing, of course) "I didn't read it, I lived it... if I read it I'll be there with a big red pen going... 'spelled wrong... never happened... big lie".
Great.Stevie is way overdue for a biography. It seems less and less likely that she will ever write her own.

I've never held out much hope for a biography or an autobiography. I know I'd rather have the story told by Stevie...something that's in her own words. Unfortunately, even if Stevie were to ever make an effort to write her story, it most likely wouldn't be an in depth look into her life and career. Much the same way she nixed her argument with Lindsey from being included in DR because 'she didn't believe fans would want to see them that way' (also read: she didn't want to be portrayed in a negative light), I figure any book she ever does will be a glossed over version of only events she deems appropriate to include.
As for a biography such as this, I suppose it's better than nothing and I would, of course, read it...but I just don't think it will be all that satisfying to fans who want a truthful, in depth, inside look into Stevie's life and career.

The more I think about it, the more I fear this too. I would love to read her biography written from someone who knows her very well, lived through it all with her, and is extremely trustworthy. Maybe Sharon or Lori? I don't know. I think about Warren Zevon's ex-wife Crystal and how her book about his life was so well done. Only difference being that he tasked her to write the bio because she was the only one he trusted to honestly tell his story, including not only the good and the bad, but the ugly as well. I don't think Stevie would ever task someone with this, but I fear the only way we will get an unbiased, unglossed, accurate account would be from someone near and dear to her in her inner circle. And in the words of Stevie, I'm sure this will only happen "over her dead body." :sorry:

I've ranted about this many times, but hands down THE worst "biography" written about Stevie is "Read Between My Lines". The woman who wrote that said she felt a connection to Stevie because both of their fathers had heart trouble or something out there like that. The book was literally pulled together from various web site reviews/interviews or comments. As we all know Stevie has a tendency to alter history (depending on when the interview took place). In this book the author tried to combine various interviews from different eras together the result is complete contradictions in the same paragraph. No where does the author say "in 1979 Stevie said this about the "Tusk" album, but ten years later was saying......" Instead the comments are strung together so it sounds like one statement.
That book is complete garbage, my review on Amazon states this (it's been the top rated review for the book since it was published). In fact I believe all of the positive reviews come from the authors friends because those are one or two lines that just say how great and well written the book is.
If this new book actually interviews Stevie (slim chance) or those around her (possible, but close friends probably won't say much) then it could be decent. But if the book is based on the authors opinion or common stories (true and false) then the book will suck.

I agree with you. Unless the auther lets us know this is an authorized biography and interviewed Stevie for writing this book, or that he personally knows Stevie Nicks, has worked with Stevie Nicks in some capacity (does laying carpet or painting her house count as "authorized" with you?) or has lived with Stevie Nicks, it's nothing more than the same rehashed collection of articles that can be found in the Penguin's own Blue Letter Archives . . . stuff several other authors have thrown together and put out. One of them, as I remember it, came up with a scheme to incorporate a few of the fans (who did not have direct access to Stevie) to sell a few more copies. Whether or not you like what they wrote, at least Ken Caillat and Carol Ann Harris had physical points of view from which to write.
You could write your own book based on these articles yourselves:

I read and throughly enjoyed Carol Ann Harris' book. Some of it was a bit hard to believe, and the fact that she comes out smelling like a rose through the whole thing, but the gist of it was pretty believable and I found the book impossible to put down. Ken's book, I have, I just haven't gotten the time to read it yet.
What's funny is that because I (and many others I'm sure) know so much about Stevie that we are super critical about what is written about her. There have been several books and articles written about Stevie and often I've finished reading and said "Ok, they got this wrong, they got this almost right and they forgot about this...."
Back when the internet was just exploding and there were very few Stevie sites (I remember doing a search and a grand total of seven sites came up), there was one that wrote about the "Mirage" album and the writer said what a complete flop the album was and that it is nothing more than a footnote in Fleetwood Mac's discography. I pointed out that the album sold over 2million and was #1 in the U.S. for five weeks, that's hardly a flop. The web owner wrote back and said "Oh, that's what I'd read, sorry". It's that kind of research that leads to horrible books!!
Then there are the Ed Wincentsien (or whatever it is) books, where in one he claims that Stevie is summoning he devil in "Gold Dust Woman" and then completely mis-quotes the lyrics to prove his point. For the record at no time does she ever sing "Hail Satan, black widow, she's a dragon.."

All of the above. I'm glad she is making money, but the Rod Stewart thing has put me on the fence. Opening Act: after all the BS she has put her fans through—GAWD! I don't like her decision making, especially not singing her best songs like Italian Summer and In Your Dreams at her concerts. She is a HORRIBLE decision maker. Secret Love and For What's Worth were lazy singles; she just choose them because she could easily sing them in concert.
She made it, but I don't know, her dependence on other people to make it, has left me at a loss. I liked her last album, but I don't know, I just think she is spoiled and very lucky to be considered a great rock n roll star. I"m not sure if it was earned on good decisions.

Finally, a major "comprehensive" biography of Stevie Nicks - to say this is L O N G overdue is an understatement! Whether or not Stephen Davis has Stevie's blessing or not is irrelevant (most likely the latter), Stevie Nicks in theory represents a storied rock n roll tale with mucho urban pop speculation & legend that makes the mind boggle. The fact that this has not occurred yet is astonishing, It would seem that the mainstream media has finally deemed Stevie worthy of an overarching legacy biography! Since Stevie has yet to commit to writing her own long anticipated & overdue career spanning story, this seems like the first logical step. And make no mistake about it, this will be a different angle than what Stevie herself would pen - her's would be a prose, fairytale emotional rendering carved out of snow dreams and silver linings. Stephen's will likely be a long dissertation on the facts, contradictions, and the "high price" of rock n rolls glory days and its underworld of drug abuse and the high price of fame in the fast lane. So even if some of it is culled from age-old interviews to new found affirmations in the press that Stevie herself has cultivated in her own timespace to recreate the truth as she saw it at the time, this book will no doubt represent Stevie Nicks as the true enigma she is - an aspirational behind the scenes construction of a truly mysterious and contradictory presence as one of the 1st ladies of rock n roll over the last 40 years.
Who knows! Maybe a movie will be based upon these revelations….
"So you found a queen without a king
Oh yes, and everyone here loved her...no one was wrong
But you're a little bit like her
You're just a little bit like her
...a little bit like Juliet"

I wish she'd either authorize a bio or what her own. There are a TON of rock bios or autobios out in the next few months: Rod Stewart, Pete Townsend, Neil Young, Cyndi Lauper, Ann Wilson from Heart, the market is HOT right now--write the damn book Stevie!

Jondalar...IMO your most recent rant is craziness...Stevie can sing whatever song she wants on tour, she has had a long and legendary career w/out your advice...her "bad decisions" have created an iconic career that has nothing to do with your perfect setlist. I suggest you reread your last comment and remember that youre speaking of a 64yo woman that can still fill a concert hall...She was invited on every big television show last season without your help or advice...has Pat Benatar, Cindy Lauper, or Debra Harry or any other "Diva" had this coverage. She's the Queen of Rock and Roll and doesn't have to sing Italian Summer on a Rod Stewart tour or can release "lazy singles" if she wants...And on a final note...she will tour with fleetwood mac next spring and make MILLIONS and you will still be complaining about the song list.

No artist picks the singles, the record label does that. She sings the songs in concert that she can pull off night after night and feel right to her. She's at a stage in her career where she can do what she wants, how she wants, and when she wants. She didn't last 40 years in the business because of pure luck. The Rod Stewart thing was a management decision based on the money to be made. Artists of her generation make their income from touring, not album sales. She stands to make a nice chunk of change "opening" for Rod, so she'd be a fool to say no.

oh right, she bares no responsibility, I'm sure that she picked the singles off this album, no one who heard the album first mentioned Secret Love as one of their favorites. It's not just that. I don't know, she just seems like a broken record.

I agree, to a point. I see Stevie as a real case of wasted potential in some ways. And the big contradiction between the tortured artist who creates music all the time and the fact that she has released so little new material in the past 20 years and seems to need to cling to eg. Dave Stewart to co-write?

I don't think Sharon would EVER write a book about Stevie. She didn't even want to do the Ask Sharon on the Nicksfix. I was so mad about that. I think Lori would write a book, after Stevie's death--sorry, I don't mean to mention. Lori was very friendly on her Ask Lori page, very open with the fans. I can definitely see her writing something. I agree with you, I think if Stevie herself doesn't write a book, the next best thing would be for someone close to her to write it. But Stevie would have to be 90 or something...

what's the contradiction? i think she's the definition of "tortured artist" . like a painter who paints all the time but throws white all over his canvas and starts over... being creative doesn't necessarily mean creating "product". like any artist, there's an innate insecurity and need for approval. just because an artist works on a piece, doesn't mean he or she is EVER satisfied with the result. add to it the pressure of being a "legend", "superstar", etc..... i can understand the time spent tinkering and fiddling with her lyrics, music, production, and so forth.

No one is forcing anyone to follow/listen to Stevie Nicks. If you don't like some of the directions she's taken so much to the point that she's getting on your nerves... it might be time to take a little bit of a break, no?
Personally, I don't feel that Stevie owes me or any other fan ANYTHING. She can do whatever the heck she wants. She can sing what she wants, she can write what she wants. Sure, I have preferences and things I wish she would do, and I certainly mourn some of the lost opportunities that we perceive. But I don't put it on Stevie - it's just life. If I personally don't like something she's done that she is happy with, that's MY problem - not hers. She just needs to keep doing her thing like she's always done. I respect her as an artist enough to be okay with the fact that she does this all for herself - she writes for herself, she sings for herself. The fact that myself and others might enjoy or connect or relate is secondary. And that's okay.

Hahaha Its like If Stevie went to the direction of country music only.I probably be the one of the few Ledgies that will still be with her.
I will even be still with her if she records a rap record. Gulp.oh my gawd.
Tammy Wynnette did great with KLF. I liked it.

That reminds me of Christine mentioning that her brother John could write a book, because he knows all of her stories anyway. Michele

Who would be forcing me to follow her? I do so of my own free will, but my love for her is certainly not unconditional. As I say, I find her talent often wasted and her decisions hard to take. I am one fan who wanted regular new material to be released, as would seem to befit a creative artist.
But I still follow. Must we adore her unconditionally and be grateful for every wish of chiffon? Can we not be critical?

The fact is your 1st statement is completely untrue, which you seem inclined to state time after time for dramatic effect and exaggeration. But you still write such hyperbole even though you know that Stevie wrote the music on 4 of the IYD tracks:distress:. And it's worth noting IYD has the distinction of being the only Stevie solo record where she had her hand in writing the lyrics and/or music for every single song on the whole record. So of course, you are entitled to your opinion about IYD & Stevie without getting banned...but at the very least state the facts:cool:.
Now can we stay on topic...

No offense intended, but you might be making more of this than is really warranted. Even though Stevie herself likes to go on about how different the process was this time, with Dave in the room and all, I'm not sure how much difference that ultimately makes when all is said and done. We know what Stevie is capable of musically....she knows a few chords, can come up with melodies for her poetry, etc. but there's always a lot that goes into making the final product no matter who gets songwriting credit. Stevie has mentioned offering half credit to people, who may or may not take it (like Prince), and Lindsey probably had as much influence on some of the FM songs credited only to her as Dave did on the IYD tracks. I don't think IYD is an indication she is doing any more or less than she ever did.

No, certainly not. My comments weren't directed toward you at all, first of all. And actually your entire statement is exactly what I meant - we ARE following her of our own free will, you don't HAVE to blindly adore every move she makes.. ... so if you're letting the things that you wish were done differently bother you so much that she, a complete stranger, grates on your nerves and you become fed up with them, why on earth are you (not YOU, just anyone) putting yourself through that?
As I said in my post, just like everyone else I have things I wish she would do, I mourn the things she could have but never did do, etc... obviously that's part of being a fan. I'm critical of and unhappy about a lot of things. But I don't let it bother me so much that I start to loathe a stranger who has no obligation to me whatsoever. I just say, "Well, damn...", make an over-excited tweet about it, and move on.
If something like the omission of a song on a tour has an actual emotional pull on you that affects how you feel aside from a little voice in your head saying "Dang it.. I really wish she would play this song!" then you might want to take a step back.
Just my opinion obviously. And again, my comments were not directed at you. Perhaps I should have quoted what I was referring to in my original post.
Anyway, back on topic... I hope the book isn't completely awful.

Agree with highlights above.
I think as fans in some ways it's our responsibility to offer opinions of an artist's work that might not be what they wish to hear. Who else will give an artist honest feedback? There are enough people around them who kiss up. I think it's as important for artists to hear what people don't like as to hear what people DO like.
That said, the artist certainly doesn't have to go along with anyone else's opinion. It's their right to stick with what they believe is the right direction for them and their work. And fans shouldn't expect the see/hear everything exactly as they would wish....that for me is part of what keeps me intrigued, waiting to see what she'll do next....
