Two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Rod Stewart missed being enshrined with his old band, the Faces, in April in Cleveland because he came down with the flu. But he'll be here tonight to launch the Heart & Soul Tour with Stevie Nicks at The Q. Stewart, 67, spoke to us by phone before the Rock Hall festivities.

Stevie Nicks and you toured together last year, too. Why is this a good pairing?

Well, we're both old people. [laughs]

I've always admired her voice. Technically, she's not a great singer -- same as me. But she has a lot of personality in her voice.

We tried it last year, and we got some great crowds. Sellout crowds. So we thought we'd do it again.

The combination of the two of us seems to work. She has a tremendous female following, and she's one of the few support acts where the house is nearly full when the curtain goes up, which is great. Makes it easier for me.

We've been friends for a long time.

Before this, did you cross paths often?

She tells stories about coming to my house in Beverly Hills years ago. But I can't remember. Must've been too drunk.

We do a couple of numbers together onstage. We do "Leather and Lace." And I think we're going to do "Young Turks" or something. I'm not sure yet.

Beyond the tour, what are you excited about in the coming months?

I have a Christmas album coming out. It's produced by David Foster. That'll be coming out at Christmas! [laughs]

Good timing.

My autobiography is also coming out at Christmas.

And the best news is that I have a studio album coming out next year. How's that for a workload for a 67-year-old?

Impressive! What musical direction are you headed in on the new album?

Maybe an updated "Gasoline Alley" [Stewart's seminal 1970 album]. When I signed with Universal, the head of Universal [Lucian Grainge] said to me, "All I want you to do is make an updated 'Gasoline Alley.' "

So that's what I started doing. But I've tackled what I call grown-up problems. There are songs with advice to my kids, and I've written a song about divorce. I haven't written anything like "Hot Legs" or "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?"

It's a pretty grown-up album. There are hardly any ballads on it at the moment. But I still have a few months to record. I might just keep working at it. We've got 15 tracks finished.

Does the album have a title?

I haven't got one yet. We have a bloody good version of [the Elmore James oldie] "Shake Your Moneymaker," which we also do live. But that isn't a good representation of the album. It's not a blues album.

How is your voice holding up?

Couldn't be better. I play Vegas three times a week [at Caesars Palace]. It's brilliant. There isn't a bad seat in the house. The sound is beautiful. And they look after me like I was Elvis. I'm loving it.

I wonder what tune will get lopped out of the digest version of her setlist.I hope she keeps the new tunes.Remember"This is not a hits tour" as she said.

Maybe Rod will ax some of his tunes to give her equal time.

I meant sad for me, as a fan. : (

Clearly she wouldn't be doing this if there was nothing in it for her. But I dunno.... I just don't see Lindsey ever sinking to that, money or not. Again, different values. Sigh.

why?

(frankly, i think that experience, when he was in his early 40s, pretty much soured Lindsey towards ever doing it again, and i bet he wouldn't consider doing something like that now in his 60s. although he's not above other ways of making money... think all those various Holiday Road-containing commercials )

The fact that Nicks paired with this guy last year is bad enough. She had to do it again?!

Why doesn't she go out with any number of dozens of other male singers, any of whom would probably leap at the chance—not to fill the hall but to sing with her?

Maybe even Neil Young, Peter Gabriel, David Crosby, Elton John, or Eric Clapton might want to tour with Stevie. You don't know until you ask (or pitch the idea). But Rod's just an unfunny creep.

Or do a tour with Bette Midler. Imagine how fun that would be for both of them, and one of them wouldn't be talking to the press about how the other is worthwhile because she "nearly fills the hall" before the main performance.

Actually, I am being just a smidge sarcastic... but at the end of the day, I think the audiences for Rod and Stevie overlap more than the audiences for Tina and Lindsey. At least with Rod and Stevie, there is a reasonable chance that you could hear their songs on the same radio station; not so with Tina and Lindsey. Also, although I find Tina Turner to be an amazing live performer, I think her style is way, way more Vegas than Rod, and that's saying a lot! I can appreciate that Tina always fancied herself a rock chick at heart, but the reality is that her fans are more likely to be fans of Cher and Madonna than Lindsey.

I think it's interesting that last year, all the promotion was about how it was a "Heart and Soul" co-headliners tour. One could see Stevie was essentially opening for him, but it wasn't stated and indeed they seemed to make an effort to combat that notion in interviews.

However, unless this interview is atypical, this time around Rod is making sure to be very clear that Stevie is his support act.

I wonder what changed?

But I think Tina was just a little edgier in 1990 than she is today. Her show then was probably more substantial than Rod's show is now.

Neither is a particularly good fit for Lindsey though.

This reminds me I just saw an episode of Don't Trust The B in Apt 23 and they went to a wedding where a man and an older woman did a rendition of Leather and Lace and the man was the one who kept singing, "take from me my lace." It was hysterical.

I don't think the Rod shows are necessary for her to be in the black. Touring on her own earns her enough to recoup the cost of recording IYD (which frankly I don't think cost all that much).

this was the section that had my blood boiling too!

Stevie is really proud of her voice (the extensive bits on tour over the past year where she talks about the practise she does with her vocal coach, how she'll be able to keep singing until she's 70), and I don't think she'd be pleased to read this.

there almost seems a wee smidge of passive-aggressiveness in some of his answers.

Maybe he got miffed last tour when she made some comments about how he never rehearses and made it sound like he was lazy.. wasn't it something like "he never rehearses unlike me, I'm such a worker" or whatever (I'm paraphrasing)

Originally, so the story goes ..... Stewart's solo tour was announced and advance ticket sales were not very good... They have the same label. so she really didn't have alot of choice in the matter... A friend that went to one of the shows said that after Stevie finished her set, ALOT of people got up and left before Stewart went on...
I never cared much for him before and now after reading that... not at all....

I did like the turn of his phrase... : She draws a large female audience"..... so that leads me to understand he doesn't anymore???
Saw him closer to his prime and it wasn't a pretty sight back then so.. now..... ugh!!!

If Stevie read this.... I hope she accidently trips him.

Isn't everyone being a little too sensitive about this whole thing? Rod probably didn't want to tour with Stevie anymore than she wanted to tour with him. This is no doubt a collaboration created by managers, accountants, etc so they could keep their artists income in the positive for the fiscal year.

Rod is right, technically speaking, there's nothing exceptional about Stevie's voice. Where Stevie's voice has always shined brightest is her gorgeous tone. Beyond that, she's got quite a limited range, and she vacillates between being flat, off key, and overly nasal. Despite her vocal weaknesses, she's still my favorite singer of all time, though. There's something about her voice that's just not measurable. And I believe that's what Rod was eluding to.

Sensitivity? On an internet message board?! I've never heard of such a thing!

Rod is correct. I think she's a far more technical singer now than she has been in her entire career. Too bad she didn't practice a bit more technique all those years ago, perhaps she'd have a few more notes beyond G#.

...and she's my favorite singer of all time too.

Lindsey has also said that he and Stevie have the same nasal qualities in their voice and that Christine helped balance that out with her more honeyed tone.

Stevie said she liked that South Park episode, so I don't think she gets upset about anyone saying her voice is not the greatest.

Don't you know? It's expensive being Stevie Nicks. :wavey:

I can't be that hard on her. I know it costs her more than she makes to tour the way she does. Her payroll is huge. She's barely breaking even on the solo shows everyone wants to see, because she's paying for it with the Rod dates.

With all this talk about the Rod tour being a cash grab, I'm wondering how anyone knows exactly how much she is making by doing it. She is the support act and is probably paid a fixed amount for each show, and who knows if it's any different than her usual guarantee? Is the double bill so appealing that the crowd is even bigger than the sum of each of their audiences alone? It would have to be (and substantially so) in order for it to make sense to pay her more than her standard fee.

I brought up selling your songs for use in television commercials, because it's something Lindsey has done -- and I find that to be more of a "cheap, sad sell-0ut" decision than touring with someone like Rod Stewart.

At least when people attend a Rod Stewart concert, they're seeing Stevie in action -- performing, connecting with the audience, and demonstrating her artistry. She's working for the money while still honoring the songs, as opposed to letting them be used to peddle automobiles, licorice, and car insurance.

Lindsey has a right to make money, too -- don't get me wrong. But there are varying degrees of "selling out," in my opinion. Some more crass and humiliating than others.

HA!!! I will never look at a piece of licorice in the same way again...I also find myself hitting the mute button or changing channels... Glad to hear I am not the only person thinking sell-out but also just a little hypocritical as well? Especially with all the "little machine against the big machine" speech.
Interesting only the use of the music was licensed and NOT the actual song or the use of his voice..? But then, Lindsey is out there touring without the big sponser push like most others are. And his one man show is worth seeing..though Buckingham Nicks would be tops on my list!!!

Don't really consider it a humiliating experience for Stevie to tour with roddy. Lets be honest... she is what most people are coming to see..

Just dying to know what she is up to.. "_)

I brought up selling your songs for use in television commercials, because it's something Lindsey has done -- and I find that to be more of a "cheap, sad sell-0ut" decision than touring with someone like Rod Stewart.

I'm happy that the particular song he sold started out as the theme of a comedy movie and didn't have that far to go to become "commercial" in the first place. I think that has nothing to do with whether or not someone's tour has become a lounge act.

On that score, even if I don't like Rod's show, I don't think it's selling out to tour with him. Rod is a lazy performer. Even though he does have songs that I like (I'm not even above liking Do Ya Think I'm Sexy), he runs through them all in the same, breezy, mechanical way. When I saw them at the Holly Bowl last year, he was traipsing around in a sing-song manner that I found reprehensible. But at least Stevie's not doing that with her set. If she'd taken a contract in a Vegas casino and played there for a year, I'd consider that a sell out.

True, true -- "Holiday Road" did have commercial beginnings from the start. I think it gets forgotten sometimes, though, that "Go Your Own Way" has also been used in commercials (National Car Rental here in the states, and Twinings Tea in the UK). "Holiday Road" isn't Lindsey's first foray into lending his songs for advertisements.

I think it's weird that a critical note about Stevie is being attacked by you with something Lindsey did. I'm not Lindsey Buckinham, I'm not responsable for his deeds. I'm gerald, dissapointed in his old heroin. That's it.

Lindsey is not the only one who owns the rights to GYOW though. Just like Christine isn't the only one who owns the rights to Don't Stop. I'm not saying FM songs are used against their will like Michael Jackson did with the Beatles' songs. But I'm saying it's not as if Lindsey personally lent any FM songs for advertisement.

I'm sorry I gave the wrong impression, Gerald -- I'm not expecting you to answer for Lindsey or his business decisions. I'm also not trying to attack you for your opinions.

I'm trying to understand why touring as an opening act (even if it's with someone who leans heavily into "Vegas" territory) is seen as more humiliating to a fan, or more "sad" for the artist, than allowing your songs to sell products in TV commercials. I'm also trying to understand why you can no longer take her seriously because of it.

I don't think any of us here look down on Lindsey for playing arenas as an opening act for Tina Turner (whom I love, but I imagine is considered to be in the same league as Rod Stewart).

I'm trying to understand that too. Is it because she is allowing herself to be somebody's opening act? Or is it specifically because it's Rod Stewart? I neither hate nor love Rod's music, but the two of them never struck me as a particularly odd pairing. Rod pre-dates Stevie, but not by much. They aren't far apart in age and fit into the same genre musically, and I hear both of them on a lot of the radio stations I listen to.

she didn't come out during rod's set.

Shoot. I hope this isn't the way it's going to be four the rest of the tour. Stevie's appearance in Rod's set is the only reason to stay around, for me at least. If that doesn't occur, I just wasted an hour watching Rod's set for no good reason.

To be fair, I do like several of his songs... I just don't like watching him prance around and touch himself while his exuberant female fans scream so loudly you'd think it was 1964 and he was Paul McCartney.

At any rate, since Stevie apparently had some mysterious reason to leave the city ASAP, I wouldn't be surprised if this was an exception and she comes out to join Rod for "Young Turks" in Nashville.

I'm basically of the same opinion that you are, Mike. Sure, ol' Rod's not known for being an introspective songwriter or a brilliant musician, but he's not exactly Wayne ("Mr. Las Vegas") Newton or Celine Dion either. I wouldn't have thought to pair Stevie & Rod, but I don't think it tarnishes her reputation as an artist.

Oh well -- at the end of the day, The Ledge is the great place it is because we all have differing viewpoints. I'm hoping that Gerald knows I was only trying to understand his, and I apologize that my wording (especially in my first response) made him feel he was being attacked.

The only reason I don't like her opening for anyone is that I don't like Stevie to play second fiddle, but that's my own emotional reaction. It has nothing to do with artistic integrity in my mind.

I am not saying that the song was used against his will, but his vote is only weighted to the extent that the owners want to defer. Mick did not want to defer to Stevie with SS and he did not. Michael Jackson and Sony wanted to use Beatles songs in a commercial and they did, whether the writers wanted to or not. McCartney takes the same liberties with Buddy Holly stuff. I agree completely. And she can still headline (and does, obviously). Stevie's star is still shining brightly. As die-hard fans, we may long for the days when she was on top of the charts and all over the radio, but her status as an icon has been cemented. Also, when you look at her peers/contemporaries, Stevie does much better than most when it comes to the number of seats she can fill and the ticket prices she can charge. A has-been she most certainly is NOT.

As for Lindsey opening for Tina Turner 20+ years ago, that was his first solo tour ever. He wasn't an established live performer. He had no track record. I am sure it was hard to book him. He had no niche and no live history. Stevie's fans will tell you his solo career does not compare with hers and it certainly did not back then. She has options that he did not then. he did not tour with Tina for the money. I doubt it was a lucrative move. Ir was a get your touring toe in the water move.

I have nothing against the Rod tour, especially since she HAS continued to tour solo. Best of both worlds. But I don't think it makes sense to meet an attack on that tour with, "Lindsey did the same thing." I don't think he did. Granted Rod wouldn't want to tour with Lindsey anyway. This stuff is always interesting to me. There's a difference between owning the rights to the song and the rights to the recording, correct? I would think that as the songwriter, if Lindsey didn't want GYOW used in a commercial, that would be the end of the it. In the case of "Silver Springs," Mick wasn't willing to give up the original Fleetwood Mac recording, but nothing could have stopped Stevie from recording a new version for Timespace. Does that sound right, or am I completely off base?

Hi Nancy! Yes, I was the one who first brought up the TV commercial comparison, as a counter-point to Gerald's statement that Stevie touring with Rod is a "cheap, sad sellout," and "humiliating" for fans.

But I suppose my comparison - or, perhaps moreso, the way I presented it -- only muddied the waters of any potential discussion of the matter. My responses only assumed a disparity in what, and whom, Gerald considers to be "selling out."

Well, we can theorize the reasons Lindsey opened for Tina Turner just as easily as we can the reasons Stevie is opening for Rod (to get your music heard, to finance the recording of an album that didn't sell millions, etc.), so I felt it did make sense to mention it. I also felt it made sense in the context of two artists who are regarded as "singer/songwriters," who've toured with two artists who are regarded as "entertainers/performers."

Well, combined with the Holiday Road argument it seemed that the only goal was to put Lindsey down in some way because you thought Stevie was being unfairly criticized. On that, we can definitely agree. However, I still see her as an artist with meaning, even when she chooses to do something like touring with Rod Stewart. I'm only assuming here that you don't view Lindsey as any less of a meaningful artist for any of the above reasons I've mentioned in this thread (which is the point I've been trying to make, in my clunky, awkward style).

As fans, we always want to see them take the high road -- but we're not paying their bills. Sometimes they have to (or, at least, feel they have to) take a gig "for the money." They are still things, as a fan, that I'd rather not see them do (hearing my favorite songs being used to peddle products is my least favorite of all the options), but I'm happy as long as they're both still out there, showing what they're made of and hopefully picking up some new fans along the way.

The young artists that are covering her on the new FM tribute are still showing that she's an inspiration to them. I'd rather see her bonding with that league in popular music.

A song collaboration with a young indie artist could be exciting and inspired, but I guess I'd be worried it would go the opposite direction and smack of desperation ("look at who I'm working with -- I'm still hip & relevant!").

For the record, I'm loving just about every track I've heard from the new tribute album.

Lol! Very true -- and I love that example.

My goal honestly wasn't to put Lindsey down, but to offer examples of similar choices or instances of "selling out." There often seems to be a disparity here between what is "allowable" for one but not for the other, and, rightly or wrongly, I was perceiving that in Gerald's stated displeasure.

Even when we love all the members of Fleetwood Mac, I do think we're all a little more forgiving of (and defensive of) our favorite(s). Admittedly I'm guilty of that as well. In some circles (and this may surprise certain Ledgies), I'm the one standing up for Lindsey. In other circles -- like The Ledge -- I find myself standing up for Stevie.

Why is it so very awful to be a supporting act? Lots of classic rock artists tour as support acts.

i think it depends on both artists and their styles, but also their fans. i've seen Kris Kristofferson open for John Prine and it was a great pairing - Prine treated him as an elder statesman, had a lot of nice stories to tell about how he first met him when he came to Nashville, they were talking about their common friends and acquaintances, Kris came back out for several songs together etc. for the most part fans meshed well and respected both although Kris is very eloquent about his extremely liberal positions which did not sit well with some fans (as you can imagine).

i have no idea how it works for Rod and Stevie and their fans.

since Lindsey was brought up, i don't think he liked opening for Tina and he doesn't seem to be keen on doing anything like that again. and as a fan, after seeing his solo shows where people are there to see HIM, i would hate to see him playing in front of the crowd there for someone else. true, almost everybody whoever experiences him live is blown away but still. plus that would also mean giving up the intimate atmosphere of small venues he plays in now.

so my opinion of both things - opening for someone else like SN is doing, or licencing songs to commercials like LB is doing is - whatever each of them can live with is fine with me. they each chose whatever way of advertising their music and making money they felt comfortable with, so as far as i'm concerned more power to both of them.

Are some of you so out if it that you don't know what kind of market-driven times we're living in? Stevie, at the age of 64(!), IS an old person (and she still rocks). She loves to perform, but dragging a solo-act-ensemble-band around behind a person is expensive and difficult. And you need backup from promoters and the companies that own the sheds for summer tours. So if a slightly older male rocker with a much more popular and bigger catalog of songs wants you to be (again) his opening act, do you turn it down over foolish pride? Of course not. There are more things in the world more important than Stevie Nicks, despite what I might have wanted to believe when I was 18 or 19 or even 20. If I was Stevie, I'd be more than happy to be in the place I'm in right now. Still a somewhat-major headliner (at the age of 64) in many venues with a whole roster of other artists who would love to work with me. And I get to play with Rod Stewart. What is so bad about that?

Stevie wouldn't have to open for Rod if she was more comfortable with smaller venues. Why is she so reluctant to do small, intimate theaters? It seems more her style anyway, since her music is so initmate. Big basketball arenas don't seem glamorous or sophisticated in any way to me.

Another thing is... she tours every year! Most people can't justify spending the kind of money she charges on a yearly basis. If she toured small venues yearly or big venues once every three years, she would sell tickets no problem.

Oh, I'm pissed Lindsey's taking the easy way out on his current tour. I've wanted to see him tour alone if he'd go the extra mile and retool his set, rearranging his songs to fit a single guitar. He said he's been trying to perfect that approach for several years. Why resort to the backing tracks? Maybe I'm being too hard on him?

Still a somewhat-major headliner (at the age of 64) in many venues with a whole roster of other artists who would love to work with me. And I get to play with Rod Stewart. What is so bad about that?

There's nothing bad about that. I'm with you all the way on this.

My only gripe with Stevie debasing herself working with the likes of Rod Stewart, as with Don Henley, and even Tom Petty, is that these men don't respect her. They don't respect her talent. They also show their disrespect openly and she never calls them on it. Never says a word. She has no trouble calling out people in her own band when she needs to. She sucks up to these other creeps when she shouldn't. No amount of touring cash would make me do it.

I can't believe he called her a support act.
He's being a real creep about her; he was doing the same thing last year when they both appeared on daytime TV. He disdains her: it's obvious in everything he says and in the way he says it. His disdain for her can be found even in the sardonic arch of his brow.

Why is a 40-year legend—one of the most beloved women in popular music—touring with someone who so obviously couldn't care less whether she's there or not. The Rod Stewart subtext is that Nicks is a flake and just an "old fart" and that makes her a great opening act for his own stale show.

Stevie never treated or talked about her own opening acts with anything like the creepiness Stewart has shown. Stewart makes Don Henley sound like Mr. Gallant.

The discrepancy in tact and breeding between the two is what's painful to me, not whether one of them measures up to the other one as a singer or songwriter. (The latter is all subjective.)

But, they always use backing tracks. It's just not as obvious when you have a whole band onstage too.

I know the band uses everything but the kitchen sink. That's what Fleetwood Mac fans want these days. I use to hold Lindsey to a higher standard in his solo work. That's all.

Don Henley and Tom Petty don't respect Stevie and openly diss her? I've never heard them do that (Henley's unfortunate 1990 misstep aside - for which he apologized profusely). They seem to have genuine affection for her.

Disagree. :sorry:

I've seen and heard it in person. Stevie constantly singing their praises is what gives people a different impression.

I've heard Henley gush about her... for instance, here:

Could you direct me to where I might read some of these unkind comments? I must say I'm really surprised.

Tom has dissed Stevie a little, but he's also complimented her. He never knew what to make of her. He knows she is a different. He said she was like a sister in the family that no one talks about. Stop Dragging My Heart Around was his biggest hit, only it was on her album. Henley has never dissed Stevie.

What I've enjoyed more than the actual content of this thread is the conversations going on between Michele, Gerald, Nancy and Johnny Stew. Four veteran members of The Ledge in a group conversation has been so pleasing to read especially since three of them have hardly been posting in the last several years. Welcome back!

Agreed. And what about making her an honorary Heartbreaker? That shows some real respect. I dont think you can put Tom (especially) in the same category as Rod. Rod is just disdainful and basically rude. :distress:

i enjoyed last years Heart and Soul concert but I am not fond of Rod's interview at all....for decades he has been rumored to be a pompous misogynist and that interview seems to prove the rumors right

He even called one of her strangest songs Battle of the Dragons a neat song.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Whatever Rod Stewart did in Tucson, Tucson forgives him. The Arizona Daily Star reports the British TV show "Loose Women" contacted Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild because Stewart has an autobiography coming out and says he's banned in Tucson. Rothschild says he doesn't know what Stewart did, but he's welcome there. A 2005 Stewart biography says The Faces trashed several rooms and a miniature train at an unidentified Tucson hotel because the hotel bar was temporarily closed. The Faces returned to Tucson and Stewart checked in under an assumed name: "Fleetwood Mac." The band trashed their rooms again. Stewart says he's delighted he's allowed back.

Rod talked about this in 2009 on the Graham Norton show. :)

It's an excellent interview and British comedy royalty Dawn French was the other guest - she played Stevie's part in the French & Saunders Fleetwood Mac sketch.

Anyway, if you're not interested in the whole interview, skip to 8:05
