View Full Version : Does Fleetwood Mac regret of have recorded any song?

I read in a Rod Stewart boxset that he didn't like recording Love Touch (Legal Eagles soundtrack). He said We all make mistakes.

I know Madonna does not sing Material Girl anymore, kind of not wanting to go back to the Reagan era and the extreme consumerism days.

I ask if Fleetwood Mac ever said Hey, we shouldn't have included that song in this album. Or Recording this song was a mistake. We should never play this song live. There is no comment like that on Mick's book, and as long as I recall, nor on Bob's book. Is there any song they considered a mistake? I hope they don't think that about any Rumours song, cause Stevie would have one more reason to complain about not including Silver Springs  .

They've never performed I Don't Want to Know and that is from Rumours!!! That should tell you something.

Yes. I remember Stevie saying that it's the only song of hers that really doesn't mean anything. Just came from playing with guitar tunings. Even if she couldn't have SS, she might have wanted a different song of hers on the album in place of IDWTK.

Don't get on my Sugar Daddy lovers, but if Chris had to do it all over again would that be her choice?

Lindsey once said that some of the songs on their albums even he raises his eyebrows at when he hears them, so I gather he probably has some Christine songs he'd axe. And who knows what he thinks of his own Mirage stuff.

Stevie probably does feel that way about IDWTK, which is a shame, since it's a great song. It has a clear lyric and the chords, melody and harmonies are great.

If there are songs Stevie SHOULD regret recording with Mac, simply pull the two duds from side two of Tango.
.........

I am a HUGE Sugar Daddy fan. I don't think Christine regrets recording it, either, since she likes to play around with the blues. Considering some of her comments in older interviews, she has said some very (accurately) negative things about her singing on the first two Mac albums featuring her full-time involvement. I'm thinking of Morning Rain and Homeward Bound--both decent songs that are sung poorly. (The first version of Morning Rain--called "Start Again"--features a way better vocal.) She also said once she didn't like the way she sang Prove Your Love, which surprises me, since I think she did a great job with it. She loves that song though.

I suppose Christine's biggest regret comes from her pre-Mac experience: the Christine Perfect album.

...................

Lindsey has said his Mirage stuff was "too safe." I wonder which songs he considers such. I think Empire State is an embarrassment any way you look at it, but he might not think so.

If he raises an eyebrow at anything, I imagine it would be a Stevie song. He generally has a high opinion of Christine's material.

I recall during a Tango era interview that he said he thought Mirage was "uninspired" and that really broke my heart because Gypsy is one of of my favorite Mac songs ever and Hold me and Love in Store are two faves as well. I couldn't imagine their catalog without them. One thing I really loved about Hold Me was the fact that it sort of gave both Christine and Lindsey equal time. Each Mac song is always only one singer with the others doing backup but I loved how Hold Me was both of them together. If Stevie had been more involved in it then it would have been a really nice rarity for the band. I had often wished they'd done more stuff like Don't Stop with more vocal interplay between the singers.

Well TITN is the exception because he did not have much to work with, but Lindsey had enough control over Stevie's songs that I don't think he has problems with her songs. He even selected what he wanted of hers. In fact, she probably has more complaints about her songs because of him than he has complaints because of her.

I think he thinks some of Chris' songs are too soft. Even though he brings a lot of estrogen (the most) himself, I think he believes Chris did.

The interplay is exceptional on Think About Me too, especially because both their vocals and their attitudes contrast.

I agree with this. Stevie has said many times, that she doesn't push songs on the band. And that they generally have their pick of her flock and choose the ones "they" favor overall.

I recall an interview in RS, right before TITN came out, where Lindsey was talking up Stevie's contributions specifically "Welcome To The Room, Sara" generally pleased with himself and the island feel to it:nod:! Sometimes I wonder what Stevie's TITN songs would be like with different arrangements. But even more interesting to me is the band passed on "Joan Of Arc" and "Juliet"!?!

Well, I'm not sure if Fleetwood Mac or Lindsey regret of having recorded it, but there's a song that really scares me, and it's "Family man" (from TITN): every time I hear it I get goosebumps and start to look around fearing that there's an intruder in my house

I have always enjoyed Family Man.

And I have always enjoyed the masterpiece that is Oh Diane.

But I should add that Lindsey refashioned I fall down, I get up, to we fall down, we get up, we take a drink from the Loving Cup and I always liked the switch and what it might say about being single and alone as opposed to being part of a duo or team and persevering.

Plus, I liked the fact that he doesn't say "sister" in Family Man and he had no sister. So, I enjoyed thinking that the lyrics had some meaning. But I didn't really like the song. I had a long disco version of it that I used to play sometimes.

Paper Doll is "on par" with her Tango contributions. Make Me A Mask is bad as well.

That was one major complaints I had w/ the "Time" band. Instead of GDW, I wish they would have done IDWTK or "Angel", which would have better captured what that version of the Mac was about. Gawd, go country, or better, alt.country. Anything but make new people sound like as much as the old people as possible.

I love how Christine and Lindsey have had a collaboration (not quite a duet) on every album... White FM album.... World Turning; Rumours... DOn't Stop; Tusk... Think About Me; Mirage... Hold Me; Tango in the Night, You and I.

I wish her vocals were a lot more prominent on Steal Your Heart Away and/or Bleed to Love Her so Say You Will finished out the same way.

There's no collaborative equivalent between Christine and Stevie

Nice list, except they did WTWCT on the SYW tour and NTF on every LB Mac tour from Tusk to The Dance. Otherwise add Love Shines (Super Bowl gig), Talkin' To My Heart, and Winds Of Change, and I'd be in.

LMFAO, the "Popeye song" is hilarious :D
I read that there are some opposing views about this song here :D
For example, I like "Sugar daddy" and "Only over you" (specially when Chris sings "Angel please don't go, I miss you when you're gone" with her heavenly voice) talking about old songs, while I love "Love shines" and "Bleed to love her" talking about their most recent songs. I agree with everyone who said that "Paper doll" is terrible...should I add also "Murrow turning over in his grave"? (please don't shoot me now!) :sorry: The only good part is the one where Lindsey plays his guitar: the sound is wonderful, it reminds me of the ending of "Tango in the night".

Oh no, it seems an esoteric or evil song. It's really scary! (I should add it to the paranormal thread). Now I'm afraid to go out on the balcony in fear of being abducted by aliens
Yeah, "Paper doll" is a masterpiece compared to this.......... O__O

If the band had any sense at all, collectively or otherwise, it would be thoroughly ashamed at having allowed "Mic the Screecher" onto the 2004 reissue.

The idea that this pointless, idiotic, and extremely annoying length of tape was included in the track list is easily the saddest, stupidest decision I can ever remember the band or its reps making.

To think that another unused Rumours track was sacrificed for this is a howler. They gave us less than 60 seconds of the tantalizing, mysterious "Butter Cookie" to make room for "Mic the Screecher"? Are you KIDDING ME?!

That ONE MOVE takes the 2004 reissue out of the realm of Classic and drags it down into that of Severely Botched. Someone's head should have rolled for it; someone's ass should have been canned.

I totally agree with you, David: another scary track and, in this case, pointless too! With all due respect for our fantastics FM, some songs are just unlistenable. Of course, as Mac said, maybe the same songs we don't like aren't necessarily the ones they regret recording. Can you imagine if one of them, maybe Chris, regrets having recorded a masterpiece such as "You make loving fun"? O_o
Anyway I just wonder what was thinking about our "paranormal friend" Mick when he had the idea for that song, back in 1976?

As for Only Over You, wouldn't be surprised that anyone considered it a favorite.

See that's what I wonder too. If perhaps the songs about the affairs and the songs about each other, that today they regret writing the song or just don't like to perform it.. i.e FM doing GYOW... just has to be a little awkward...!

Right. And I didn't ask what songs do you guys think they should regret, though it's interesting to know fans opinions. But I ask what songs did they actually regret, I mean if there's any interview, article, etc. where some of them said Hey, including this song was a mistake. I guess the best approach to that was whay I've read about IDWK

It's a little bit difficult to find out, but we'll try checking all the articles about FM. However I'm not sure they ever released an interview saying they regret one of their songs..of course they must regret some of them, specially the songs about each other's affairs (as MacSB wrote), but maybe they'll never talk about it publicly

Family Man bad? No way! I think Lindsey was talking about his family and how their words of wisdom and love stick with him wherever he goes. At least that's what I think when I hear him singing the lyrics. Also, the spanish guitar captures the feeling of walking along a road going on your journey through life and being alone. When his voice is low and distorted when he says "a family man", that should've been left out.

"Only Over You" is a great song. Especially when Christine sings "and it's only over you". That whole song is airy and dreamy, it's like she's whispering a feeling.

"Welcome To The Room Sara" and "When I see You Again" should have either been left off of TITN or arranged differently. Same with "Empire State" and "You And I, Part II" (part I is good but was a single).

This is what I was referring to when I wrote that the song is scary :woohoo: Not the song itself, but the music and the special effects in it. Even if I don't like the song, the lyrics is good anyway! :)

I agree with you, and maybe a lot of us reflect themselves in this song or in "Over my head", for example.

"Welcome To The Room Sara" and "When I see You Again" should have either been left off of TITN or arranged differently.
"When I see you again" it's so different from the other songs in TITN. It's very sweet and reminds me of "Songbird" in the Rumours album: a way to change and make a more versatile album, suitable for all musical tastes.
