Bette Midler, who received the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award at the ceremony on Thursday night, joked, "This thing has been going on for 43 years, and this is the first time I was ever invited? I'm kind of annoyed!" She continued about how much she enjoyed the event before adding, "And there's no TV cameras -- those f---ers!"
(Actually, the event was filmed, but for legal reasons only 45-second clips can be posted.)

My God, the song really, really suits her! I don't know why I'm so surprised but I am. I can't wait (I can't wait!) to hear the whole thing when it surfaces!!

It sounds amazing, and I really hope we get to hear the full version soon.
However, I really wish she would have taken those sunglasses off!

Do you guys remember Bette's short lived sitcom in 2001? Bette is trying to multitask and needs to finish reading a book to appear on Oprah's book club segment and only has a day or two to read this giant book. And she had forgotten she promised to sing The Rose at this guy's funeral, so while she's singing it she keeps gesturing to her keyboardist to speed it up, so by the end she's singing it in double time (maybe even tripple time) and does the whole thing without missing a beat or a word. It is absolutely brilliant. And so much fun seeing her totally lampoon herself by taking such a sweet sad song and make a comedy bit out of it. I have the full episode so if it's not already on youtube I'll see if I can cut it out and upload it for you guys.
And I really really hope someone gets an mp3 of Stevie doing this. It sounded incredible.

It's been escalating ever since the Say You Will lasso dance, apparently.

We need an intervention. The minute everyone sees the FWIW steering wheel being formed, hold up signs telling her this has got to stop and explaining the potential pain that can be caused.

It seems like a compensation for the diminishing twirls and swirls and high-kicks... But without the long veil-wing costumes, the arm waving just doesn't have the same impact.

If anything, it distracts from the performance rather than enhancing it, in my opinion.
But if Stevie's having fun doing it, then, hey, ya know, I guess that's all that matters!
She could be sitting on a stool up there for an hour and a half and I probably wouldn't care.

I have loved this song for years. My good friend always does it at karaoke. It would be grand if Stevie put this on an album or released it as a single. It really does suit her and it made my eyes get watery too! Funny how Stevie brings that out in people.:thumbsup:

Or for her diminishing vocals. The Rose should be a little sweeter sounding on the ears I think. But that is minor (she has feeling behind her singing) compared to the hand gestures. She is beginning to look crazy.

Crazy like a fox! I kind of love the hand gestures.
I sort of agree with you about "the Rose," but after watching the video I suspect it was one of those performances that sounded incredible in person, and didn't translate well to video.

It also probably sounds better in it's entirety than it does in just that snippet.
All of the reviews of it were pretty glorious.

Yeah, the vocals seemed a bit of a struggle, and the hand gestures are really campy/goofy.

I got excited when I noticed her starting to do hand gestures for Lindsey's songs too (there's only one brush we need), because I began to imagine all the places she could go with that. The tall grass in SHN, to begin with.

I say we pick a song of hers and make up our OWN hand motions, and start doing them when she sings it at the concert. It will be like a flash mob, only... not really. Maybe she'll like our choreography and use it herself.

I think If Anyone Falls in Love would be fun, with doors closing from behind, hearing voices through a wall, and falling in love, one of us, can't you picture the hand signals?!

That WOULD be a good one!
I also thought Secret Love would be a nice contender. You need some rest, listen to me, secret loves secretly dying (I'm picturing a cocked neck, rolling eyes, tongue hanging out the side).. going upstairs... down here in tears...

I agree. I liked a lot
Just curious about the sunglasses. I'm sure she got a problem that day, like a stye or similar. She even appears wearing them in the pictures. I remember a department store opening here with a Miss Peru and she got to wear sunglasses the whole event, probably because of an eye problem:rolleyes:

^I think Stevie's just wearing them because she thinks she looks cool and it helps with the lights.
