Check out this piece of VERY exciting news from Nickslive!

I would take this with the proverbial bucket of salt if she hadn't said the part about rehearsals starting in January. Now I am only taking it with a pinch. Yes!!

Honestly, Im a little disapointed in a 2013 tour, I mean, at this point, what exactly are FM going to offer?
I mean, I love the band, but what? Ill pay $150 for one ticket to see the same set list from 10 years ago, and maybe they throw in 1 classic song
I mean, there are so many more possibilities, studio album, BN, SOLO, FM tour, what exactly is the marketing approach going to be?
just doesnt sound that appealing at this point

Speaking as someone who has only seen them live once, I'll gladly go and see them again. I do understand why people may be disappointed but come on, we'll all end up loving it!
Ideally this will be to support a new album but that's highly unlikely. Oh well, I'll still be going!

Just as I did with the "unleashed " tour I will sit this one out.Tours that are done for no purpose whatsoever than to fleece fans out of $ hold no appeal to me.

Oh, I knew Mick's little Playboy move would pin her down. If those boys press her hard enough, there's little she won't do.
If rehearsals are really in January, we won't be getting any new music, which is a bummer. But this might be the last time to see these old fogies.

Depending on where they play, the cost and what else I've got going on at the time I'll probably go. I'd like to see them again. It's a pain if there's no new music and I'd much rather have 40-60minutes of new music to last a lifetime instead of 120-150minutes of old songs that lasts an evening.
I'm not really sure what the point in touring again is. Maybe they'll release BN with a lot of bonus tracks just before the tour (yeah, right...)

If they are not touring behind an album it is purely mercenary.Remember Mick's playboy interview? He needs $$$$$.

I'm glad I have a very vivid memory for things that happened in my childhood/youth.I can see and hear in my minds eye the Tusk tour show that I attended in December 1979 like it was last night. That really helps me resist the temptation to cross Mick's and the others palms for their second in a row cash grab tour.
I think the Buckingham Nicks CD will be released next year for its 40th. It will have a second disc with some new recorded stuff and unreleased tracks. The Mac will add 4 to 5 BN tracks to the live set (including Stephanie)This will be their swan song. This makes the most sense a Buckingham Nicks reunion with the audience and the marketing to sell the Buckingham Nicks cd 40 years later to The Fleetwood Mac fan base.

I'll go if there are:
1. A few Buckingham Nicks songs.
2. At least one (preferably two or more) songs from Mystery To Me
At least tour behind the 40th anniversary of SOMETHING worth celebrating...
(Plus, Stevie singing "Hypnotized" could be amazing.)

Not very if you buy Fleetwood Mac Live, The Dance, or Live In Boston, or a slew of 1982 onward bootlegs, regardless of who's actually in the band.

That might be enough for me .I can't see it all that happening though. They are more interested in catering to the casual boomer fan as Fleetwood Mac.

That's funny that you would say that because I just posted on a Stevie thread about why she will never do SOTM again. I mean really she doesn't have the voice for it anymore. But I did suggest that she could do a piano version of it like she did with Rhiannon for the Enchanted box. I mean for a future record not for a tour with FM. Your idea about That's Alright is interesting. I wonder why they never did that song in concert.

Much like the Lindsey Buckingham show I saw this week, it all depends on the set list. I could see myself paying top dollar to see them again if they sprinkle enough of my favorites in there.

You must be a pretty big fan to have joined a forum about them, so just go and see them, you owe it to yourself. Even if you are apprehensive at first about your decision, you really won't care once they come out on stage.
I went to see them on the Unleashed tour and it was my 1st time seeing them, turned out to be one of the most electric nights of my life. (I suppose front row does help though  ) Also perhaps alot of it could depend on who your favourite member is too, if you're a Lindsey fan you won't be disappointed anyway, I don't follow Stevie closely enough to tell you what she'd be like live in 2013. Lindsey will still be kicking ass though. Well, not literally (anymore  )
Just do it :blob2:

I'm not really sure what the point in touring again is.
I agree a new album would be great, or at least better than only a tour. But I also think the days where a tour supported an album are over (specially for old bands). Nowadays it's viceverse, or albums are even not needed. Tours are more profitable than CDs, iTunes, or any kind of media. With all the piracy and ways to copy music, albums are not a good business, and let's face it, this is a matter of business, specially nowadays.
If they are not touring behind an album it is purely mercenary.Remember Mick's playboy interview? He needs $$$$$.
I never understood why Mick is so hated in this website. I'm not concluding this from the previous quote but from the sum of a lot of threads, cause I always read about blaming on him about his exceeded love for money. I'm not sure about that, but if it is true... so what? If that were a crime I'm sure half of the world would be in jail, and even more. Specially in these days, where all media transmit us messages about loving money, business first, etc.. I'm not surprised.
See the sports, the wealthy sportmen who earn millions for be in a soccer club, not mentioning the tv spots (Gillette, Nike). Same as movies, the movie stars earn millions for playing the Joker or appear in underpants in a giant ad in Times Square. Should we hate Jack Nicholson, Mark Whalberg, Cristiano Ronaldo, Tiger Woods, Diego Maradona, Jaclyn Smith, etc... etc...?
And I'm not sure Mick is the only one who do this for money. Do the others tour just for fun or art's sake? I don't think so.

I don't know if I can handle hearing/seeing another performance of Landslide, Rhiannon, Silver Springs, I'm So Afraid, Monday Morning, Go Your Own Way, Dreams, Don't Stop, or the "new" (15-year-old) version of Big Love. With the exception of Big Love and Silver Springs, these songs were pure nostalgia by 1998 anyway.
I would on the other hand, love to hear Storms again, or any of Stevie's Tusk songs, as well as other under-performed tracks from any of their albums, maybe even revisit some of the SYW stuff.
Hopefully we get something a tad different from the 2009 tour.
I have no doubt that's exactly what we will get; something a tad different from the 2009 tour. ;)
Either way I'll be there for at least one show.

Ummm... this IS the Rumours section. I deliberately posted it here and not the Stevie forum because, although it's a Stevie quote, it concerns a tour for the band.

I agree...the thing is, their catalog has a lot of untapped potential. They could mix up their set a LOT and STILL keep warhorses around like The Chain, Dreams, Gold Dust Woman, Rhiannon, Tusk, Go Your Own Way, Don't Stop.
There should be a set of Buckingham Nicks songs...Crying in the Night, Don't Let Me Down Again, and Frozen Love would be my choices. And if they keep doing a solo song, then I would change that up and have Lindsey do Countdown and Stevie do something else other than Stand Back.

Never understood this either. As if John, Chris, Lindsey, and Stevie tour for some greater artistic meaning. Please, this is their job...they do this because they make money doing it (same reason I work). They may love their job (making music), and be very good at it, but they do it to make money. Crapping on Mick for looking to make a buck is juvenile when it gets brought up. Who cares? If I was Mick Fleetwood I would be milking the Fleetwood Mac brand as much as I could to generate as much out of it while I still can enjoy it.

I think what annyos people is that Mick is so bad with money management. His bandmates have made him quite a lot over the years, and yet he is often in financial straits. There's no doubt they all WANT to make a lot of money, but after Rumours, it's a bit absurd that any band member would ever NEED money.

There's more discussion about the Fleetwood Mac tour on the "Stevie" forum that on the "Fleetwood Mac" forum. I suppose an argument can be made that the thread on Stevie's forum is more about Stevie's involvement and her fan's wishes for her to continue on solo - tour/album.
I agree with others as I too don't understand all this Mick Fleetwood hate. His contributions seem to always be dismissed since he isn't a singer/songwriter.

I do not understand this EP thing. I think some young unestablished artists release EPs to pay for the next batch of studio time for the next EP and to build up fanbase. Example: Florrie has consitently been releasing the best pop music of the 2010s--20 songs! 3 EPs plus 8 other singles/free downloads. But what I don't get is... why not release those 20 friggin amazing songs in a double album or two albums? Anyway... what would be the point for the Mac... unless the EP were attached to a re-release of Rumours. ... or B/N?

I'd really love to see new music first. But, can't really blame the band when so many fair weather fans at the concerts only react to the hits. You know how it goes....new song comes on, people file for the bathrooms.

That's what I'm praying happens..
Like what most people are saying, Lindsey and Stevie are arguably putting out some of their best and relevant work right now. And although a cash tour is an easy way out..which they've given into before..I can't see how they CAN'T do something EP or BN re release related. It wouldn't make sense!!!! But then again why have these guys ever made sense?!

Well, when we have suggested the EP compromise before, it was as a way to get them in and out of the studio quickly, if some members are not up to spending 6-12 months putting out a complete album.

I think the most doable is... Stevie and Lindsey recording a few new tracks and adding that to some "unreleased" stuff with the original Buckingham Nicks recordings is only thing that can happen....not to mention the 40th anniversary of the album.

I don't think their problem is writing songs. They both must have countless songs in the vault somewhere. Their problem is getting everyone in the same place for long enough to record but not for so long that it doesn't lead to them all falling out.

I'd probably only go see the whole band again if they do at least 3 out of any of these songs:
Caroline
Tango in The Night
Family Man
When I See you Again
Book of Love
Empire State
Can't go Back
That's Alright
Straight Back
Fireflies
Frozen Love that should speak for itself be worth the 150 dollar ticket price.
Twisted would be fun to hear especially if they do a rock version.
Lola
Crying in the Night
Crystal
Don't Let me Down Again
That's Enough for Me
Walk a thin Line
.......... The catalouge goes on and on.
I'd really just want a high energy show from them. I've seen stevie 5 times and it seems like she was at a high in 2001 then it just became the same over and over again. Lindsey I'd go see again anyday. Fleetwood I've seen 2 times on each leg of SYW will tour.
I think we should get some request as fans set it up online. The song with the most votes gets played that night.

That would be a great idea. HANSON did something similar - they let you vote for an album, which would be played all the way through in the set that night. At one point they also let fans vote for the cover song they would do.

In this recent interview, Stevie pretty much declares FM will do another "Greatest Hits" tour in 2013!
http://www.kshe95.com/musicnews/story.aspx?ID=1727377
"Despite several postponements, 2013 will be the year that Fleetwood Mac heads back on the road. The band last toured in 2009; marking the first time they embarked on a major road trek without promoting a new album. We just caught up with Stevie Nicks, who told us that once again, Fleetwood Mac will be touring on the strength of it's back catalogue with rehearsals on the books for the beginning of 2013: "I'm taking the rest of this year for my In Your Dreams record that I love so much, and then 2013 is Fleetwood Mac, 'cause we're in rehearsal in January."
In Your Dreams -- which is Nicks' seventh and latest solo studio album -- was co-produced by the Eurythmics' Dave Stewart, who also co-wrote seven of the album's 13 songs. The album also includes the song, "Everybody Loves You" -- which was written about Lindsey Buckingham.
In Your Dreams entered the Billboard 200 chart at Number Six and sold 52,000 copies during its first week of release."
In this recent interview, Stevie pretty much declares FM will do another "Greatest Hits" tour in 2013!

I know. 'On the strength of their back catalog' indeed.
It's like Christine said she could do Don't Stop with her hands tied behind her back. They should be able to roll out of bed, half asleep, and stumble onto the tour stage with no preparation at all if they aren't doing any new songs.

In addition to repeating the 2013 tour news, a couple of the outlets are just randomly saying that ELY is about LB. I mean she's talked about it before, but why mention that and not discuss meaning of the other songs. I wonder if ELY is something that she discussed on the red carpet.

I figure by now they done the songs 1000's of times. The rehearsals should be easy and fast. The good thing about doing them is testing the equipment out after some was in storage for some time , and make sure it works before it gets loaded for the road trip.

Yes, it was written about Lindsey. Stevie said it.
Dave sent her "Everybody loves you / But you're so alone / Everybody knows your name / But you can't find your way home / No one really knows you / I'm the only one" and she just KNEW those words HAD to be about people in a duo, so she was inspired to pull the rest of the lyrics for the song out of stuff she had written about Lindsey. Personally I doubt Dave was even thinking of Annie Lennox when he wrote those lyrics - he could have written them about his pet chihuahua.

I have this quote on my tumblr: “A duo is a different breed of cat….Only [we] really understand this song. Fall in love with a person for who they are. Fall in love with them again - for what they do. Rare…” I've posted it as Stevie talking about ELY, but I can't for the life of me find where I got it from. I initially thought it was in the cd booklet, but checked and it's not. Wasn't there brief explanations about each track on the album on the itunes download? Perhaps that's where it's from

“I immediately took it like he was writing that about Annie Lennox, because that sounded like a person from a duo writing a song about the other person in the duo. And what Dave and I had that was great was that we’d both been in really famous duos, so the whole time we were making this record, I feel like Lindsey and Annie were floating around in the room. Because a lot of the stuff that we both wrote seemed to be directed to our years as famous people in duos.”
"The reason Dave wrote the chorus the way he did was because of his relationship with Annie Lennox. So we had two duos. Dave understood. He's the same way with Annie -- 'Everybody loves you. . . no one really knows you, I'm the only one' -- I'm the only one that knew you before you were famous. So I let the song go ahead and be about Lindsey, and he let the song be about Annie."
“The words to ‘Everybody Loves You’ came from a poem that’s pretty old, like maybe 12 years old, that was definitely written about [Buckingham]. Where it says, ‘No one else can play that part. No voice of a stranger could play that part/It broke my heart,’ that’s pretty much all about Lindsey.”
“I felt he wrote it about Annie Lennox, because when you’re in a duo you really know that person better than anybody else. So I flipped it around and wrote the verses about me and Lindsey.”

Glad that Stevie told the truth about it being another 'greatest hits' tour with not a note of new music. And to think Mick was criticizing her for touring behind an album released last year.Well there's a couple hundred bucks I'll be saving next year.
They should perform BN in it's entirety, intermission, then come back and play hits. They would sell tons of tickets. Since Christine won't go out, they have room to add the BN songs.

Love the concept. We'll probably get the FM set with 2 BN songs if we're lucky. Boo.
Exactly. Stevie is very afraid of doing new material with FM because she says everyone coming to see them want to hear the hits. I know you have to play Rhiannon, Go Your Own Way, Don't Stop, Dreams...but why not Angel or That's Alright or Sisters of the Moon? That isn't new material. She also said around Christmas that FM won't do a new record because no one buys records. I think she has been frustrated by the sales and lack of support for IYD which I get. But FM has enough of a catalog that they could do a fresh tour with songs already recorded.

Not to mention, if she's been touting her new found idea on her current tour of doing a "non greatest hits" set... which is really about half and half with a cover thrown in... then why would it be so awful to give the FM set a good shake up by doing a third BN, a third old ignored FM album cuts/set list songs, and a third of the true hits: Rhiannon, GYOW, Gypsy, etc.
I wish they would listen to their fans. We have good ideas. Michele's right about new arrangements, for instance. Gypsy acoustic would be awesome. Lindsey changed Go Insane back to it's original arrangement on the last FM tour. Some changes are definitely in order. Put in Stephanie and drop NGBA and Big Love.
The diehards are the ones you're playing to anyway and they will love it. The others are just coming to get drunk and to say they saw FM, so they'll never even notice, because they're the ones in the audience going, "Oh, wow -- I didn't know they did this song!"

i really hope both Lindsey and Stevie are on board with this idea for the next FM tour. when i talked to Lindsey he certainly seemed to be. and now Stevie seems to be saying the same thing.
actually, that's how all Lindsey's solo sets were/are constructed - about half hits and half new songs and/or deep cuts.
but Big Love can never leave the set. however many times i heard it live it was ALWAYS spectacular. same with So Afraid.

That's because Stevie takes EVERYTHING to be about two people who were in a duo.... I agree that Dave could have been writing about anything at all.. I don't think he's fixated on his past with Annie Lennox the way Stevie is fixated...sometimes just stuck.. on her relationship with Lindsey.
I start to wonder if it's just laziness...or something... why think of new, different, things to write about when you can go back to that same old well over and over and over and over again....... Her really early songs (before FM) had a broader variety of themes and characters.
Sometimes I'd like to challenge her to write a song that doesn't use the words "broke my heart" (i'm going to have to back and count how many times that shows up on IYD), "tears", "dreams", "angel".....

Same here. I think you should try to get this point across when you do your next Tour de Lindsey! ;)
I remember in 2009 when Stevie said Unleashed would be our only chance to see FM do a "greatest hits" re-hash. Maybe she was being honest in a way and they'll do deep cuts. A girl can dream....

Well, they probably wouldn't have to paper the upper balcony like they did in many cities on the last tour. I think die hard fans would go to shows or even multiple shows if they rolled out other material. These are the people that buy the majority of the tickets. If die hards stay away because it's a re-hash of the last two tours for $125, then you have lost your base.
Considering that Stevie and Lindsey will have been on the road for 18 mos with solo projects, many fans will have seen one or both recently as well. They will need to do something different to excite promoters and fans.

I'm supposing the problem is the need to make money. With a new album, they couldn't tour for at least another year, right? I mean, they can't just go into the studio and whip something out in a few months. Rather, they maybe could, but they won't.
There's truth in SN's statement about no one buying records, but my assumption is that their general audience (boomers) makes up a significant portion of the people actually still buying physical records. They could work out a similar deal to The Eagles and see some success, but do you think the label is willing to gamble on new material again? I'm not sure how much money they put into SYW...did they make much profit on it?

Why does anyone think artists are only in it for the "art"? That's just absurd! This is a business. Of course they want to make money. Lol!Absolutely true. The expectation that money is, or should be, the farthest thing from an artist's mind is a silly throwback to the bohemianism of the 1960s.
But why do the members of Fleetwood Mac need to make quite so much money when they tour? They've all been making Big Money all their adult lives. Can't they do one micro-tour, playing exactly the sorts of venues that Buckingham and Fleetwood do when they play solo? They book themselves into arenas and amphitheaters every tour, and therefore have to be "Fleetwood Mac" to everyone involved: audiences of half a million to a million, bookers, lawyers, agents, and the press—all for one purpose: to pocket several million dollars. What would be so bad about doing a single tour as "fleetwood mac" (lowercase), playing new songs (or old songs that never get played) in little theaters for a few months, keeping the backing low key, and if necessary footing the bill for their own traveling?
Nobody expects this band of multimillionaires to turn against capitalism all of a sudden. But why have they all turned their entire creative lives as a band into a marketing onslaught? Is it that painful that the need for enormous compensation is so great? Did they get so sick of Rumours that they needed to release its material on twenty different CDs over the years?
Even in a Big Business like rock and roll, this band has been stand-out crassly commercial since it hit #1 on the charts. I think their brains have experienced a Darwinian adaptation to recognize only the reality of the dollar.

Not sure if you recall a Mirage era interview with Christine only (I'm thinking US magazine) in which she stated that if Mirage had not gone to number one that Fleetwood Mac would probably have disbanded .So this mindset in the band has apparently been going on for years.

If the art was at the forefront, I believe a new record would be more of an option. But who knows, maybe the shenanigans from this tour will give them a bounty of new material to source from. ;)
I believe Stevie & Lindsey are comfortable financially. Lindsey probably doesn't need to tour small venues or do meet & greets - he's doing it because he wants to and that's great! I mean, he could probably just sit on his duff and bathe in money if he wanted to. But he also has 3 kids and kids aren't cheap!
Mick is opening a nice looking new restaurant and is getting a divorce with kids involved; also not cheap.
More and more artists are just touring these days because there's no money to be made in albums. I don't think there's any shame in it. Everybody's gotta make a living. If Fleetwood Mac can afford to make an album without expecting it to make bank, I believe they should go for it, but that's not really my decision, unfortunately!

And as much as I'm sure DOES love the art of it, too, but of course it's also about money - Stevie doesn't do anything else. This is her livelihood and her carreer. You imposed a tone upon my rather innocuous sentence (i mean, you really made a big leap there). I maintain that is because of either a) your defensiveness about stevie nicks or b) your prejudices against me.
You wrote:

Or why do you insinuate that she is wicked, evil, mean and nasty because "it's all about the sales for her"?
There is nothing in my sentence that suggested being derogatory much less suggested I was thinking: "wicked," "evil," "mean," "nasty." You claim that a derogatory tone could be gleaned by my "sentence structure." What possibly in my sentence structure = wicked evil mean nasty?
Here is my sentence:
"Well now we know it's all about the sales for ms. nicks."
"Well" would suggest "resignation" on my part
"now" -- as opposed to before
"we" would suggest all of us (meaning: I'm referring to the participants in this thread's parsing of the possibilility of new material)
"know" means that we now have information
"all" that's where it's arguable; she may other considerations in making music, but not in actually releasing it, is my point. thus: all. I stand by it. Even if i'm wrong.
"the" -- maybe the gratuitous use of "the" suggested the phrase "the moolah" or something and that could be read as somehow suggesting greed (rather than calculation), but I think I meant it like "the sales" to mean "the circumstances surrounding sales, i.e., the market"
"sales" the state of the record industry, the circumstances for moving units
"ms. nicks" -- now I see. I didn't capitalize her name! and I called her ms. (because i had forgetten how y'all refer to her as "la" or whatever). Yes: lower-case and ms. = mean evil nasty wicked. You caught me!!!!! Best not make that mistake again. Move over, Roland Barthes. It would be highly arguable if you used "only" but "all" still leaves some wiggle room for me.
I don't think Stevie writes, records, or tours ONLY for the money. She's totally in it for the fame. She could stop working tomorrow and she'd still be flush. Isn't she due her Social Security next May?:D
Serioulsy, I think touring has more to do with everyone else who makes a living when she tours, and why she still does it regularly. Oh, let's not forget the fame too.:D:laugh:
As for recording, I can see why there's a lack of desire to work seriously on a new Mac release, knowing in advance there's a limited audience. I don't think it should play the key role in her decision making, and I'm not sure it does. Band politics are probably more at issue than anything else. Things we don't know about or ever hear about likely come up in the negotiations of recording and releasing new music, and that stuff is a turn off for both Nicks and Buckingham.

1. I didn't quote you in my original post.

4. Stevie was not mentioned specifically in my original post, so I was not defending her.

By the way, it wouldn't matter how you referred to her, it reads the same. If I'm the only one who read it that way, then so sorry. (I kind of doubt it, though). :)

At any rate, I don't know about other Mac fans, but I am definitely going to see Fleetwood Mac on this tour. After all, you never know when it could be their last, and I do miss them as it's been three years since I've last seen the band play.
However, as hardcore as I am, I only went to two Mac shows on the Unleashed tour because it was the same-old, same-old (and also because I couldn't stand to see Stevie staring out at the crowd with empty eyes while singing the end part of "Silver Springs"). If that's what we get this time around, attending one show will be enough for this hardcore.
This from a girl who went to an obscene amount of shows on the Say You Will tour.

By then, it will be their 36th year, would it not? What do you mean it "ends" on that day? Forgive my ignorance on the subject.
Now, 1997, that's how you commemorate an anniversary. Ever since then, nothing, not even in 2007. It's kind of disappointing, frankly. Stevie and Lindsey were both doing their solo thing then, as they are now.... but couldn't they do at least one show? It's not as if they have to rehearse that much. I don't see a new album coming out with FM at all, I have to say Say You Will is a masterpiece to me love every song on that album. I have been listening to that alot lately again just love it. It would be cool to see a new album but ok to if its a greatest hits tour is fine as long as its easy on the wallet and if they come to CT I will be at the show.Maybe drag out some gems never done before in concert or ones that have not been done in a long time.Hopefully it will be more than one gem.

REPORTAGE | Music by Chris Barrett
The Legend Of Fleetwood Mac Makes Them Perfect For Glasto
It was announced last week that Mac were going on tour in 2013, and they were immediately linked with a Glastonbury headline set. Few bands could perform the task so well, and much of that is wrapped up in their story...
The unequivocal thrill that scorched across the social networks of mine and most other news feeds last week was a joy to behold. From hipsters to housewives there was no escaping it; Fleetwood Mac were touring again and seemingly the entire world were talking about it. Despite the fact this was a band whose last great album was released in 1987 it’s hard to imagine a similar **** storm erupting for many other acts.
The story behind the band is smeared in gack and scandal; countless affairs, addictions, deaths and pretty much anything you could summon forth from the pantheon of rock and roll. Appearing originally against the wood chip doorways of the late sixties London blues scene, the bands original incarnation disbanded after mercurial guitarist Peter Green over indulged on LSD amongst the forests of a Munich hippie commune; the side effects being his immediate decent into madness and simultaneous attempts to convince the remaining members that it was a good idea to give all their royalties to charity. The band didn’t agree.
As the rock landscape switched to the Sunshine State, so did Fleetwood Mac. Beat keeper and new leader in chief Mick Fleetwood led the band to America’s west coast and with an eye firmly on the charts, added Lindsey Buckingham and his then girlfriend Stevie Nicks to an already augmented line up, complete with bassists John McVie’s then wife Christine. Going into the Rumours album each of one of the members personal relationships splinted-Stevie left Lindsey, Christine left John, and for good measure Mick got a divorce and they sacked their manager. They then spent an entire year in the same room trying to write an album, and Rumours inevitably became an outpouring of guilt, bile and regret. They were all also doing enough coke to turn horses into unicorns.
Amongst the mixture of narcotics, alcohol and heartache, tensions never dipped below volcanic- lyrics were lifted directly from the slanging matches of the night before. In live footage from the era the venom in Lindsey’s eyes as he wails ‘packing up, shacking up all you wanna do’ dagger straight across stage to Stevie is palpable. Consumption also led to confusion, during a sustained bout of substance abuse, legend has it that it took the band 6 days, 9 separate pianos and three professional tuners in order to get Christine Mcvie’s keyboard sounding ‘just right’ before finally enlisting the help of a blind man called the ‘loony tuner’ to solve the problem. So intrinsic was cocaine to their hourly existence that Mick Fleetwood attempted to give their dealer a credit on the album, though wisely this was re-thought. Rumours went on to sell 40 million records. It was a soap opera made of vinyl, an invitation into the bedrooms and private lives of its creators. The follow-up always was always going to be difficult.
Tusk was extravagance in the extraordinary. Recording studios ran around the clock, ego’s orbited Jupiter and an unquenchable thirst engulfed the band. Asserting creative control over the album and with his head firmly turned by the primal sound sound of punk, Lindsey Buckingham demanded experimentation. Having found a vocal sound he approved of he taped a microphone to the bathroom tiles and on his hands and knees chanted ‘oooohhh’ & ‘arghhhh’ into it. Unfortunately for the others concerned, this carried on for 2 weeks.
Buckingham was not alone in the unorthodox. Fleetwood decided that when the title track required a brass section, he would ignore the obvious and simply hire the entire United States California University marching band to accompany them; he went one step further and rented the 60,000 seated Dodger stadium, just for him and his band to record a chorus.
The Tusk toured matched its recording, demanding the exquisite the band unwittingly hired Hitlers former train to traverse across Europe because it had palashal walnut and matching velvet. To add even more expense Stevie Nicks demanded a grand piano in every hotel room; this often resulted in an exasperated hotel staff winching a Steinway way piano upwards of nine floors each time as, unsurprisingly, she also demanded the penthouse.
After all this where does it leave Fleetwood Mac and their proposed tour? Only a fool would say anything other than Sunday night on Worthy Farm. A band built around emotion demands the drama of a Glastonbury headline set, you and your assembled friends-some you will know, many you won’t- will gather round the Pyramid and as refrain rings out across the hearts of the assembled throng, all that’s left to say will be:
‘I can still hear you saying you will never break the chain.’

I think the plan is to announce the 1st leg of the tour and see how it goes. If demand is high, and they all feel good about it, most likely another leg will be added and eventually travel overseas, even if it is only European countries.
