Constantine Maroulis, Cheyenne Jackson and More Will Perform at the 2012 Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction
By Michael Gioia
31 May 2012

Tony Award nominee Constantine Maroulis (Rock of Ages, The Wedding Singer) and Cheyenne Jackson (Xanadu, All Shook Up, "Glee") are among the performers that will take part in the 2012 Songwriters Hall of Fame Annual Induction and Awards Dinner June 14 in NYC.

Also set to perform and/or present at the ceremony, which will be held in Times Square at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, are Meat Loaf (The Rocky Horror Show, Hair), Dave Grohl, Stevie Nicks, Kenny Rogers, Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris, L.P., Jerry Moss and Take 6.

Fantasticks and 110 in the Shade writers Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones are being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame alongside Jim Steinman (Whistle Down the Wind), Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Seger and Don Schlitz. The inductees were previously announced in February.

Also honored at the event will be Grammy Award winner Bette Midler with the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award, singer Ne-Yo with the Hal David Starlight Award and Lance Freed with the Abe Olman Publisher Award; the first-ever Pioneer Award will be posthumously awarded to Woody Guthrie. "Stand By Me" is the Towering Song with co-writer Ben E. King being honored with the Towering Performance Award.

Established in 1969, the Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF) "serves as a vital bridge between music’s past and future. In the Hall, musical pioneers are enshrined and celebrated, while the organization’s music community outreach grooms the next generation of troubadours."

The Marriott Marquis is located at 1535 Broadway. Tickets for the event begin at $1,000 each and are available through Buckley Hall Events at (212) 573-6933. Net proceeds from the event will go toward the Songwriters Hall of Fame programs.

I'm sorry, but I think the Songwriters Hall of Fame is utter bollocks. I mean, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora are inductees, but none of the members of Fleetwood Mac have been inducted. Why on earth is Stevie answering their telephone calls? They are beneath her.

My guess: public relations to further expose her new album, since she will already be touring behind it. "Set to perform or present." I suspect Stevie will perform.

Maybe she is trying to raise her profile with them so that next year she can be an inductee instead of a presenter/performer. (Of course that didn't work out with the Grammy Museum, but you never know.)

Well, she's not really starting her tour until the end of the month, so I would be surprised to see her haul all of her band and junk out to the east coast just to perform one song. I suspect she will be a presenter.

The fact of the matter is that Stevie's qualifications for being inducted are beyond repute. In addition to writing Fleetwood Mac's only No. 1 hit single and scoring several Top 5 hits, she gave birth to the undying beast we've all come to love (and somewhat loathe) known as "Landslide." So why would they honor Bette Midler and not Stevie? How many iconic songs has Bette written? Zero?

This reminds me of the Grammy Museum event last fall. I for sure thought that such an appearance meant a Grammy nomination would be a lock....we obviously know this was not the case. Stevie does all of these events and makes appearances, and she is not recognized the way that she should be by these "industry insiders".

I hope in our lifetime.Meantime they seem to pick artists that dont deserve to get nominated .This reminds me of the Grammys.Anyway Especially non rock musicians.

I am of two minds regarding her red carpet outfit. On the one hand, it's very edgy/modern and Halston-y, which I usually like. On the other hand, it makes her seem a tad under-dressed, especially when you see all the other gals decked out to the nines. This seems like an outfit for going out to dinner moreso than a black tie event. Although I would love to see her decked out in something flowy and diaphanous, I love the fact that she styles herself more as a rocker chick than a Hollywood starlet. Any gal can put on a gown and a pair of heels and walk the red carpet. But it takes a lot of confidence and self-awareness to pull off this kind of look.

Seger, Lightfoot among Songwriter Hall inductees
By JOHN CARUCCI, Associated Press – 10 hours ago

NEW YORK (AP) — Stevie Nicks prefers writing a song over meeting a handsome prince. Ne-Yo claimed songwriting saved his life. And Bob Seger said writing a song is the hardest, yet most rewarding thing that he does.

Converging opinions thrived at the 43rd annual Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction ceremony in New York where Seger, along with Canadian folk rocker Gordon Lightfoot, "Gambler" songwriter Don Schlitz, "and Jim Steinman of "Bat Out of Hell" fame became the latest members of the prestigious club. The writers of the long-running musical, "The Fantastick's" were also inducted.

Seger opened the show with a spirited version of his 1973 classic, "Turn the Page." He was then inducted by Valerie Simpson who performed "We've Got Tonight" in his honor.

On the red carpet before the performance, Simpson said that steamy track has a very special power.

"It's one of the sexiest songs I know, it put more people in bed than I can imagine," Simpson said.

Ne-Yo was honored with this year's Hal David Starlight Award. It's given to young artists that are making a significant impact with their original music.

"To have a person who that has written a song that I look up to or that I grew up listening to tell me that I am good at it to. That means the world to me," Ne-Yo said of Hal David, a frequent songwriting partner to Burt Bacharach."

Then he explained how writing songs saved him.

"I was a pretty riled up little kid, and if not for my mom giving me the pad and the pen and telling me to take my emotions and put them there, then there was no telling then I might I have been sticking you up or something," Ne-Yo joked.

After being inducted by Swizz Beatz, Ne-Yo told the crowd of nearly 900 that he didn't prepare a speech because he still didn't believe he was standing there.

While Nicks was not inducted, she did honor Bette Midler with the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award, and even performed "The Rose,' the song made famous by Midler in the 1979 movie of the same name.

"People ask what is your favorite thing to do in a night? Be in a fantastic studio with a great poem and a piano and a little tape recorder. That is my idea of a great time," Nicks said.
Lightfoot known for such hits as "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," and "Sundown" performed his haunting 1970 ode to his failed marriage, "If You Could Read My Mind."

On the red carpet he explained his motivation: "My life had been a bit of a rollercoaster. I think at that time I was going through the lower dip and sort of climbing up again."

Over the years, artists from Barbara Streisand to Johnny Cash covered the song.

One of the evening's funniest moments came from Jim Steinman, who wrote songs for Meat Loaf on his first two "Bat Out of Hell" albums. After Loaf and Constantine Maroulis performed an abridged version of the nearly 10-minute title track, Steinman noted: "They shortened the song so much I felt like I was watching an episode of "Glee."

The Songwriters Hall of Fame was created in 1969 by a group of established songwriters, including the legendary Jonny Mercer. The organization's mission is to shine a spotlight on the accomplishments of songwriters.

It was evening of black tie, chic denim and intergenerational musical mashups at last night’s Songwriters Hall of Fame 43rd annual induction and awards dinner, held at the Marriott Marquis in New York. The unsung heroes of song took the stage and basked in the adulation of nearly a thousand music industry producers, executives and luminaries.

Among this year’s inductees were 73-year-old singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, who sat quietly as acolyte Steve Miller performed his classic “If You Could Read My Mind.” Bob Seger, also an inductee last night, sang a tribute to own career by belting out “Turn The Page,” his soulful ode to the rigors of a musician’s life on the road released in 1973.

The Times Square gala took an emotional turn when rocker and actor Meat Loaf choked up as he inducted close friend and collaborator Jim Steinman who wrote the songs on Meat Loaf’s 1977 landmark album, “Bat Out Of Hell.”

“Jim Steinman’s songs allowed me to be the actor that I am,” Meat Loaf said as he held back tears. “Here I go getting emotional.”

Steinman lightened the mood noting that “a great song to me means an erection of the heart.”

The loudest applause of the night went to Bette Midler, the acclaimed performer who was given the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award. Pioneer rocker Stevie Nicks, former longtime lead singer for Fleetwood Mac, delivered a touching rendition of “The Rose,” the title song of the 1979 movie inspired by the life of Janis Joplin which starred Midler.
“Through the eyes of Bette Midler we got to see Janis Joplin,” Nicks said behind dark sunglasses.
Midler accepted the honor with self-deprecating humor. “When I started in this industry was the tramp then a visionary, an icon and now I’m an institution,” she quipped.

The biggest crowd pleasers were the performances which showcased long established and emerging talents. Soulman Ben E. King, also an award winner, sang his evergreen hit “Stand By Me” with a cappella jazz sextet Take 6. Soul singer-songwriter Ne-Yo got a standing ovation after he performed his pop smash “So Sick” after receiving the Hal David Starlight award for being outstanding young songwriter.

“A part of me doesn’t believe I’m standing on this stage,” he said.

Of the night, Seger said, “I’m deeply honored and very proud.”

And Stevie Nicks paid tribute to Bette Midler by performing "The Rose," a song Midler made famous more than 30 years ago.

"I don't think the song has never sounded better," Midler said in thanking Nicks.

I'm kind of annoyed," said Midler, accepting her trophy, in typical tongue-in-cheek form.

"First I was a tramp, then a visionary. Then I was an icon, then an institution. This is an award for tenacity," she joked, thanking people including her daughter, her "long-
suffering husband," "the family that I had, as nutty as they were" and a team of managers and publicists "subjected to my vast insecurity."

She continued: "I would also like to thank people who love me unconditionally even when I was at my worst. Which is, unfortunately, a lot."

The Grammy winning-Midler has released 15 albums, fronted 19 live tours and has sold more than 30 million records worldwide. The singer and actress' chart-topping hits include "Wind Beneath My Wings," "The Rose" and "From a Distance."

Nicks, wearing dark sunglasses and black pants and jacket, performed "The Rose" in homage to Midler, calling her a "songwriters' dream" in an introduction speech: "She takes each song and sings them as if she had written them herself."

Bette Midler received the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award for her skill as a song interpreter, and her friend Stevie Nicks was on hand to perform in her honor. “It’s fantastic, ’cause Bette and I have been friends for a long time,” Stevie told reporters on the red carpet, “And she chose me to sing one of her songs, and I chose ‘The Rose.’”

Stevie added that she chose that song because of Midler’s movie of the same name. “I thought that [she] did such an amazing job when she did that movie,” said Stevie. Stevie also told reporters that Fleetwood Mac will tour in 2013 and will begin rehearsals in January.

I'd love to know more about Stevie and Bette's relationship...I've never really read anything before about them being friends/hanging out...but when I do see pictures of them together, they always seem to be having so much fun together.

Yes, and I LOVED that scene...another example of them seeming very chummy...but that's really the only example we have of their friendship...I want to know more!

Yep, that's the universal gesture for a river drowning a tender reed.

Michele

love me some Stevie
but no-one does the Rose like Bette
imagine standing on stage and making 100s of people cry at ur feet
no drowning reeds necessary

Stevie needs to ditch the quasi ankle boots
and put some knee high ones on with those leggings if she insists in wearing them
the top, her body, her face all HOT HOT HOT!!!
she looks all shiny and happy *sigh*

ME TOO!!!!!
Bette was my fave singer since i was 6 ... only to be eclipsed by Stevie when I turned 20
but she's still near and dear.
news to me theyve been friends since the 70s
WHY havent they worked together :(
i thought they were only friends thru Taku?

Right?

No disrespect to Bette, but it sort of puzzles me that she received a lifetime achievement award for her skills as a "song interpreter," while Stevie still isn't in it.
Not that there's anything wrong with being a song interpreter. There isn't. But it isn't the same thing as being a songwriter...

Yes I agree.Bette is a knock out performer. And also a great actress too,She was my moms favorite.

What puzzles me is why don't these organizations don't recognize Stevie and her work. It's like she's on their blacklist.
