Stevie Nicks is a legend of song and style. As Fleetwood Mac's frontwoman, she wrote some of their greatest hits including 'Dreams', 'Rhiannon' and 'Gypsy', while in the realm of fashion she championed boho gypsy goddess steeze. For our Music Issue, we asked her about her all-time favourite songs.
'Rock and Roll Woman' (1967)
— Buffalo Springfield
From the first time I heard it, that's who I wanted to be. And that was before I was even in a band.
'Man in the Mirror' (1988) — Michael Jackson
It's a song about not complaining about how things are, [and instead] making a statement about how things could be.
'This Woman's Work' (2001)
— Maxwell
It is rare for a man to be able to sing a woman's song with that much sensitivity — it actually compares to the original version by Kate Bush. Also, Maxwell's version came out when I was going through a trying time with a dear friend who was sick and eventually died. It helped me through that time in my life.
'ET' (2011) — Katy Perry
It's really just a re-telling of the story of Beauty and the Beast. Another amazing song of the fairytale done very well; a modern version.
'Fix You' (2006) — Coldplay
As songwriters, we always hope we might be the person that can say something that can fix someone who is sad; that the words we have written can reach down and pick you up. Sometimes nothing but music can do that.

Nah. She's talked about her love of "E.T." and Katy Perry in general before (which is why I always lol a little inside when Lindsey implies that Katy Perry is the absolute nadir of music), she loved Prince back in the day, she's mentioned Rihanna and Beyonce as some of her favorite artists more recently, and she's never been shy about admitting she likes pop music -- why wouldn't she love Michael Jackson and Coldplay too?

from this list she seems to mostly say she likes whatever is the most in your face popular / biggest seller at the time.

Haha, exactly, and I have no doubt she's telling the truth. People seem to expect her to be passionately into all this great old rock music, but she's always been into whatever was popular at the time.

Some of those tunes don't ring a bell.Or never heard of.I'll pass on the new music she likes.I hope she's not looking for more odd ball covers to do.

I thought she also loved Winwood's Higher Love, Hendrix's Little Wing & U2's Where the Streets Have No Name.

For a man who loves everything she sings, it's so refreshing to hear you reject her poor taste in music.:)

Will I got to agree with you on that.I'm not really reject her taste of tunes She has strange picks. Not common tunes.
I never cared for Led Zeps "Rock and Roll" tune but I do love Stevie's version.
I would not mind some CSNY and CCR covers from her.I know she's was a fan of them back in the BN days.
'Rock and Roll Woman' (1967)

The only song on her list I like. Truthfully, I've never even heard some of them.

I love Stevie (well, up until she lost her voice post-Wild Heart), but she's a shrewd lady. Doesn't take away any of my respect for her - music is a business like everything else. But sometimes her deliberate plays to stay "current" seem just a little bit... well, pathetic might be a bit of a strong word, but I can't find the one I want.
I mean, pop music is one thing, and there's plenty of decent pop and rock floating around, but Katy Perry really is disastrous, and Coldplay makes most people laugh with their sentimentalism and, ya know... lack of attempt to be... well, catchy. at all. I mean, Rihanna? Beyonce? I'm not a rock and roll loyalist (in fact, I'm a huge R&B fan) and I know this stuff is terrible.
Stevie really does know how to pander, that's for sure. I mean, for God's sake, she took a song she had tucked away for years (Lady From The Mountain) and turned it into a song that would conveniently appeal to the massive Tween crowd that accounts for the success of the Twilight films. Woman has business sense, I give her that much. I'm not a fan of Led Zeppelin either, much less her doing "rock and roll" - to me it seems, again, a very strategic move to put herself in that "claaassssiiiic raaaaawk" niche that Fleetwood Mac, because of their more sophisticated approach to arrangements and songwriting, never quite fit in with. A lot more kids these days, when they dig back into the 70s, go for Led Zeppelin and such than for the Mac. Stevie's smart to try and catch some of that wave.
She's always done this, though - Stevie had a bad habit of hopping on trends, rather than getting adventurous. Sometimes this worked out great - obviously the laid-back mid 70s pop approach suited her like a charm. It gave us "dreams". And the country rock vogue she flirted with on Bella Donna gave her a whole new side to explore, one she was naturally very well suited for. But then came the 80s synth pop and... the hanging out with Sheryl Crow and Sarah McLachlan, retconning herself and making the awkward transformation of image from a glamorous rock star to yet another sensitive, hopeless mellow, simpering female singer-songwriter... oy.
I don't mean to bash Stevie, I love 4 of Fleetwood Mac's albums and 2 of her solo. How many artists can say they participated in HALF A DOZEN truly excellent records? most are lucky to get TWO! But seriously, if you want to see a singer exploring new territory with INTEGRITY, I mean, give Grace Slick props for going art-pop on "Dreams" or Debbie Harry her due for jumping off the rock train and hooking up with Chic on her solo debut for some psychotic funk debauchery.
I would be MUCH more interested if there's an interview where Stevie answered this same question in the 70s or early 80s - when was on top and simply didn't have the need to pander to anybody. As it stands it's only a matter of time until she's singing duets with Lady Gaga.

If Stevie is like the rest of us....... then her favorites list could be something totally different next week. :) Maybe these are some of the songs that she is listening to right now. Also....I know her list was more different than some fans would have thought (Although, Fix You is on my list as well of all time favorites) But.... like with all songs.....they mean something different to everyone. For me...."Fix You' is a very personal song because it reminds me of someone I spent alot of years with together......so that is one reason it is connected to me....because it is connected to a very specific memory for me.

I am not a fan of Katy Perry, however, the ET song is so damn catchy it gets stuck in my head every time I hear it.
I wonder if Stevie likes Adele? She is an exceptional songwriter and vocalist. I imagine Stevie would relate to much of her 21 album.
I guess if this list was her trying to hop on the popular bandwagon she would have listed Adele. She is on fire now.
Maybe she named tunes that are currently on her playlist.

Okay..I'll take the bait:confused: if someone chooses to like a song from Coldplay or Perry they are pandering? and your example of "intergrity" is Grace Slick? If Stevie wants to enjoy contemporary artists she is pandering? You've completely lost me on 95% of your comments - the only comment that is interesting too me is your idea of the damage Stevie did to her voice during the WildHeart tour...oddly enough I agree...I have continued to LOVE her voice and her material but the damage is obvious...Now I'm going to listen to the John Cash's American Recordings where he pandered to the public by singing cover tunes...

If shes trying to be "modern" like so many people seem to think, then you'd think you wouldnt see dates such as...
(1967) 45 years ago
, (1988) 24 years ago, or even (2001)
over A DECADE ago
Hi, Im the year 2012 Nice to meet you.
Lets face it folks, even 2006 was a little bit ago at this point.

she's not pandering, nor trying to be contemporary.... it's odd this is being sooooo dissected. Karen probably submitted the "answers" anyway.

She chose Katy Perry? Maybe because she gave Stevie part in the video. No Led Zepellin? How can it be? She wrote in "Crystal Visions" liner notes that it was her second all time favourite band. And the greatest omission: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers! She has been totally inspired and influenced by them since the glory days of "Bella Donna". Where's Sheryl Crow? I don't get this list!

As a reformed Coldplay hater, I just have to drop in to defend Fix You. Reportedly written for Gwyneth after the death of her father because Chris Martin knew not what else to do - I'm not known for being sentimental, but people would really laugh at that? I find it to be very moving, and I can see Stevie genuinely appreciating the song and it's sentiment.
And besides, who is she pandering to exactly? On the opinion of some here, everyone hates half of those artists anyway.

I think Stevie just jotted down the first few songs that came to her mind. I'm sure she has an endless list of "favorite songs." And like another poster said, she's probably noting the songs that she's most into right now. That's probably what I'd do if asked this same question.

I like all of these songs. Who cares anyway, if you asked me my top songs of all time I'd probably just say the first things that came to mind - way too hard to choose, really, and too hard to remember them all.
Katy Perry being on here should come as no surprise to anyone, she's talked about her numerous times...

— Maxwell
It is rare for a man to be able to sing a woman's song with that much sensitivity — it actually compares to the original version by Kate Bush. Also, Maxwell's version came out when I was going through a trying time with a dear friend who was sick and eventually died. It helped me through that time in my life.
Does anyone know who this might be? If Maxwell's version came out in 2001 and that was the time when she had a dear friend who got sick and died, it can't be Robin.

I believe Maxwell's version first came out as a live cover from MTV Unplugged in 1997, and 2001 was when he released a studio version. Maybe the person "I Miss You" is about?

She does love Coldplay. And she does privately listen to varied stuff. I was around her over the holidays and she had a playlist going that went from the Stones to Janet Jackson.
