Hopefully there isn't a thread lurking in the mist along the same lines as this one. Knowing my luck there is, but it's hot today and I'm feeling lazy so here's another one ;).
Anyway, an acquaintance of mine from University has recently discovered the delights of Fleetwood Mac. Having earned quite a reputation on my course as the crazy cat lady who's obsessed with R.E.M., Fleetwood Mac and Silver Foxes (Delicious older men, eg; Lindsey, Robert Downey Jr, Rupert Everett etc), she's asked me to send her a playlist of songs that would help ease her into the Fleetwood Mac world. Does anybody have a list of songs they would share with a newling that doesn't contain the usual standards (eg Rumours fair, Rhiannon, Gyypsy, etc), but would gives a good all round overview of the FM flavour? Maybe it should be two lists, one for pre-californication and one for californications?
Okay. I'm rambling. I'll bullet point what I would like. Can you tell I've had plenty of Coffee today, lol?
One playlist containing non-"standard" songs from the pre Lindsey/Stevie days
One playlist containing non-"standard" songs from the Lindsey/Stevie era

Thank you!!!!!!

Okay, I've thought of this and actually did this a few times for people. I would just do 1 playlist/CD's worth as a introduction, making sure you include at least one song for each primary member and the major albums from Fleetwood Mac '68 till Say You Will.
Primary members: Peter, Jeremy, Danny, Welch, Christine, Lindsey, Stevie, and Billy
Major albums: self-titled '68, Then Play On, Kiln House, Bare Trees, Mystery to Me, FM '75, Rumours, Tusk, Tango, BTM, and Say You Will.
Find out what exactly about music he or she likes, i.e. male or female singers, guitar or keyboard heavy, drums/bass, harmonies?
Sub in a few album versions with awesome live versions from the Dance, etc. Make sure to get some collaborations songs in there, World Turning, The Chain, Love is Dangerous, etc. Choose uptempo "rock out" type songs along with the slower more "soft rock" type FM songs.
Stick away from demo/alternate versions...too hard to explain to a FM "newbie". No solo songs!
Do the list/CD in chronological order so that they can see the bands progression over the years.
Hope this helps...

Hi! It's a good choice what KenshiMaster16 did, so I'm going to make two discs, with the basic and other songs. But, I'm not so "acquainted" with the pre Stevie/Lindsey era! So I'm going to try...

If you are looking at pre Stevie/Lindsay, I think you need Why and Spare Me a Little. Maybe you use the live Why with Stevie and Lindsay.
I think you do include some Buckingham Nicks like Frozen Love, Without a Leg to Stand On and Crying in the Night.
You know the popular singles. If you wanted a sample of non hit songs then
White Album - World Turning
Rumours - I Don't Wanna Know
Tusk - Sisters of the Moon, Beautiful Child, Stroms, Angel, I Know I'm Not Wrong
Tango - Caroline, Isn't it Midnight
Say You Will - Thrown Down, Bleed to Love Her, Steal Your Heart Away, Everybody Find Out

Honestly? If I wanted to really win somebody over to the Mac, I would just hand 'em a copy of the "Tusk" album. It has enough of the Mac's pop brilliance combined with some of their best album tracks. You'll never hear "Angel" or "I Know I'm Not Wrong" or "brown eyes" anywhere else, that's for sure - and these are great songs! Tusk is really the album to prove to people that Fleetwood Mac were not just a glossy "soft-rock" stereotype. Plus it has some of Lindsey and Stevie's best songs - "Storms" in my opinion is really under-rated, and superior to Landslide, which is so overplayed and over-covered I could shoot myself, "The Ledge" is one of Lindsey's coolest rockers ever... great record!
And maybe pair it with a live show (bootleg!) from the same era, to mix in live versions of the Rumours and White album fare, which always sound very different, and very fresh in live versions from that era.
If you haven't explored fleetwood mac live bootlegs, DEFINITELY DO. I knew a guy who hated Fleetwood Mac and literally did a total 180 after hearing the Sydney, Australia Show from the tusk tour (A+ sound!). Frankly, there is not one single live track from "The Dance" or something like that that you can't find something WAAAAAAY better and more impressive from the live 1975-1982 era.
