Rolling Stone, the issue in spanish, did a survey on social networks about the most overrated bands and singers. The list didn't surprise me, partially. I was looking for an english issue survey but couldn't find (I mean I find others but not from RS)

U2, Kurt Cobain, Bon Jovi, Alejandro Sanz and Justin Bieber

And I have to say, though probably unfair cause I've been here 2 years..........Stevie Nicks Solo:sorry:Stevie Nicks comes to mind, very definitely. The fanbase-wide idolatry of her as a lyricist has always both puzzled and slightly amused me. I don't think her lyrics would have had anything like the same impact on fans if Stevie herself wasn't so physically alluring and charismatic. I think one fed the other. I see nothing in her lyrics except a very occasional bit of not-yet-mature honesty. The rest of the time, the stuff she's penned seems like blither-blather to me, no different a posture than the personas that Alice Cooper and various heavy metal bands have.

I think Pink Floyd and Kate Bush are overrated, too. This elaborate structure of achievement and significance has been built up around them, and I don't think their actual work can support such a structure—certainly not consistently.

Various schools of now-fashionable singing styles (like the "soul" pyrotechnic style and the postnasal-drip-from-angst style) strike me as impossibly overrated. People react to that Mariah Carey style on singing-contest TV shows as if great truths or primal emotions were being tapped into. I consider it hogwash, as phony as the night is long.

Jack White/White Stripes. I feel like scraping paint off the walls when I have to listen to his garbage. I simply do not understand the appeal at all! I tried watching the movie It Might Get Loud, which featured true rock legends like The Edge and Jimmy Page... and Jack White (barf). Really? Jack White doesn't deserve to be in the same room as The Edge and Jimmy Page, let alone shine their shoes. After a few minutes, I just couldn't...

Iron and Wine (Sam Beam). I actually like some of his stuff. But the way the critics swoon over him, you would think he is the most amazing, original musician ever. It's largely background/coffehouse music for me... nothing that grabs your undivided attention.

Adele. Yes, she has a great voice and she deserves to be a popular recording artist. But does her 21 album deserve to rank up there with Thriller and Rumours in terms of being of the best selling albums in recording history? Hey-all- to-the-no!

Tori Amos. She has always come across as a bit of a poseur to me. She is self-consciously arty for the sake of being arty, and she still refuses to admit that she started her career as a blatant Kate Bush wannabe. I haven't seen recent footage of her, but I still throw up in my mouth when I recall how she used to play the piano sitting with her legs wide open to the audience, as if she was airing out a nasty yeast infection.

Bruce Springsteen. He had an amazing run of albums between 1975 - 1984. Nothing spectacular, not particularly deep (he's not the most intelligent/articulate troubador to ever come along), but very solid, melodic, emotional efforts. But everything before 1975 and after 1984 has been  . Besides being the crowned spokesperson for the blue collar working person, he hasn't expressed much emotional/topical/musical range- his legend is built entirely upon melodramatic, angst-filled urban tales- a theme he revisits over and over again. And I would also add that he is easily the worst/sloppiest guitar player of any musician at his level of success; it comes as no surprise that he takes along so many guitar players on tour.

Elvis Costello. I just don't get all of the critical praise for everything he does. And I always wondered what he would sound like if he took nasal decongestants.

I don't know; it depends on how you define "overrated" I guess. I happen to like U2. I've seen them once live from the nose bleed section & even in the nose bleed section, I liked them. One of the best concerts that I've ever seen.

I've never seen Bruce live, don't really like him, but I've heard that his live concerts are a good two to three hours long. And he always sells out his shows when he comes to Philly. Overrated?

Lady Gaga, well, from what I've seen on TV, she's sounds OK, & again I don't really like her, her outfits are over-the-top. I know she does it to get attention, but it's not really necessary. Again overrated?

Can an artist be "overrated"? I have to think about that one.

Lee

Agree completely about The Beatles, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, Springsteen, U2, Adele (even though I like her well enough), and Tori Amos.

I'd add:

Neil Young: I like a few of his songs, especially "Harvest Moon," but it's mostly noisy, unintelligible garbage

Bob Dylan: Again, most of his songs make absolutely no sense, and I'd wager that he doesn't even know what 90% of his lyrics mean. So, when I bitch about Stevie's lyrics, I can say in all confidence "Yes, Stevie, I would absolutely say that to Bob Dylan." I cringe every time I hear "Shelter from the Storm" (a song I otherwise love) and his reference to blowing a "fugelhorn." Every bit as irritating as "drownded" or "Nag Champra."

Without comment: Led Zeppelin, The Who, and....oh, who am I kidding? 70% of all rock music from the '60s to the present is insufferable to me. :sorry:

Oh, Madonna is very definitely overrated. I haven't followed her at all since the Ray of Light album (which is probably the best thing she's ever done). I like some of her songs, but she was never anything special, either as a vocalist or a songwriter (which I don't think she ever did much of to begin with).

I'll get skewered, but I find the following artists overrated:

Sting - I think I was the only one who was glad that SN chickened out of making that call to put him on TISL.

Springsteen - Over 25 years ago, I was a fan. By the end of the eighties, less so.

Michael Jackson - Great singer before puberty hit. After that, his voice was weak, IMO. And I never cared for the idiosyncrasies he threw in.

Joni Mitchell - I know she's a favorite on The Ledge. I don't doubt her significance as a lyricist, but the mere sound of her voice leaves me cold.

I almost put Mary J. Blige on this list, but she does put a lot of feeling into her performances (so I can see why she has so many fans), even if her singing does not strike me as anything exceptional.

I also declined to put Debbie Harry or Gwen Stefani on my list. I don't dislike either of them, but I've never understood why they have so many hardcore fans. Please don't take my tone to be insulting, I'm just curious & hope that some of you can explain to me what their draw is.

It's great when people snap out of the hero worship & "legend" stuff that goes along with entertainment.Much of it is engineered to be that way for the sake of being a hot seller (Adele) as well as fake celebrity hookups to boost status (Coldplay).
So YES on Jack White--widely considered to be the greatest musician of the last 20years. W.T.F...
Florence & the Machine, agree, her new record sucks balls.Hype ruined her.
CALVIN HARRIS has to be the winner though. Overrated asshole of very little talent, labels set up a clever 'duet' with Rihanna (overrated also-limited vocal prowess) then suddenly everyone wants to know.Blah. So tired of the ploys being used nowadays.

I don't think it's saying that people who like these artists/bands singers or gimmicks are wrong, I'd say it's more an over enthusiasm from a mass audience that makes a sort of "Emperor's New Clothes" situation out of a music act...and few are willing to state the obvious most of the time.
But as long as people enjoy the music then who cares how credible or deserving the artists may or may not be!

Agree. I think all artists are usually overrated but their fans. So the overrrating issue should be measured, if possible, by general public. Or the media is what should be measured. I mean, we should say That DJ, that radio, or that critic is overrating this band..

I'm not saying that I feel that way about all music that came out before I was born, just that this album had a huge cultural impact that I did not feel because I was not around. I bet Adele's 21 will have the same effect. Everyone ooh's and aah's about it now because the sound is fresh compared to what's on the radio, but will people be all that blown away by it 20-30 years from now? Probably not, because the people that didn't experience it as it was happening won't have felt how different it was from the other stuff on the radio at the time. That's all I meant by that statement, though I suppose it was worded poorly.

Anytime in any era with some artists having hits on the charts for months on end plus having hit after hit with releasing two to three albums within a year .I call them over exposed and overated. With all these talent reality shows on tele now which is a glut of them producing manufactured talent .Back in the old days with artists like Fleetwood Mac Beatles and artists in that generation had to bust their rumps to get their names noticed. Here today these new artists go on these talent reality shows with millions of viewers watching the shows.I mention this before. These new artists like Adele probably will fizzle out probably in 5 to 10 years.Artists from the 1990's up to now are blah compared to the Fleetwood Mac generation artists or earlier.Yes I agree on overexposure on some artists. It seems like Stevie,Lindsey solo and rest of FM got Eff'ed with that dept.As we know. What kills me is when I see these artists pop up out of nowhere and clean house at these music awards shows.Nora Jones was one of them at the grammys.I said who in the hell is Nora Jones. Her tunes are ok.

With Fleetwood Mac's Rumours LP back when it was released.I remember people were fussing about FM being overexposed and overated at the time.

In the country music dept.

I agree on Taylor Swift been overexposed. But I love her music though. To bad the teaming up with Stevie went bad.I still blame the show producers.
Rascal Flatts are overated .The lead singers voice is annoying.

So, Springsteen...I have mixed feelings. I don't think he is overrated as a performer or lyricist at all, but he is a bit overrated strictly as a musician. He often has trouble communicating what he wants to hear in the studio and making it happen efficiently, from what I've read. However, the man is a PERFORMER and he knows how to put on a great, sincere show! I saw him in Detroit during his current tour, and he played for three hours, and it was the best concert I have ever been to (or ever will be too, probably). He pulled out a bunch of oldies, but they were wonderful, and his voice is still in great shape. I do agree with the previous comment that his 1975-1984 material was the best, but Tunnel of Love (1987), Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ (1973), and The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle (1973) are pretty great too. At least he gives his band credit, I guess. I really am a fan of his lyrics, because they are pushing the edge of cliched a lot of times, but they are still unique and fresh enough to resonate in the souls of the listeners, partially because he integrates his rhymes with musical phrasing really effectively. His backlog of qualitysongs is astonishing as well. . I'll always be a Springsteen fan.

I agree. I am 21 years old, and I really don't think Adele is anything special. She has a nice voice, but I do think it's overrated. Someone like Joss Stone, on the other hand, I think is underrated. She has an extremely powerful voice, something really special that doesn't come along every decade (although recent production may not showcase it that well).

I mean, yes they are good& have a solid following but WOW the level of extremes people go to when talking about their music. .they aren't and never were the second coming. And a batch of their recent work hasn't been all that well received yet the over the top worship continues.

Bruce Springsteen overrated? Maybe in US. In my homeland he's far from being so. I can't remember any of his songs being played on Polish radio stations other than "Streets of Philadelphia". His post "Born In The USA" albums are what made me his fan in the first place (especially "Tunnel of Love" and "Ghost of Tom Joad"). When he came to Poland in 1997 he didn't sell out small venue (2.000 + seats). For me, Michael Jackson has always been a bit overrated. I mean, "Thriller" and "Off The Wall" were great albums but on the other hand hadn't we heard it all before on Stevie Wonder's records? And Adele...her voice resembles sometimes that of Dusty Springfield's (yet it's not even half as emotive). Her music is dull and uninspired and I can't see why so many people started to adore her. Maybe because in today's music market we forgot that singers must sing! Other overrated artists are: Sting (few good albums like "The Soul Cages" and "Ten Summoner's Tales" and tons of so-so pap), Peter Gabriel (definately less appealing than Phil Collins due to his artsy-fartsy approach to music) and...Barbra Streisand (I know she's got some pipes but I can't see why this woman is so idolized and has sold so many albums. Her music is dull)

Are you like me in the sense that you categorise your albums and music by moments in time/seasons/time of the day/weather etc? I have always had this habit. For example, I simply CANNOT listen to Silver Springs unless it's raining buckets (especially if I'm walking in the rain), because I know this is when this song is at its most sublime. Nick Drake I listen to in the dark. I once went on a long walk in the dark with Nick Drake playing. There were neon lights everywhere, people rushing by living their lives and autumn in the air. I was in sheer bliss. You and I Part 1 I must listen to while on the bus in the dark. Gah...Alot of my music is dark time music, lol. I have different categories in my iPod for when to listen to music. "Rain Music, Sunshine, Having a Good Day, Getting my weepies out through music rather than crying, Meditation, Walking in the Woods etc". I love having moments where simply perfect music for it is playing. It just enhances every experience.

I have that habit too! I find it hard to listen to Rumours in the wintertime...or most California rock, for that matter. I mean, obviously, it can't be avoided for the entire winter, but it's so much better when the sun is out, at least. And Van Morrison is best in the fall- especially Astral Weeks and No Guru, No Method, No Teacher.

Ha, funny, i can't listen to that song unless it's sunny! Oh well. (it says "Springs" in the title for God's sake )

I suppose it stems from my first "discovery" of the song, really. I'd heard it a few times on my iPod and didn't really think anything of it. But one day I was taking a walk at the Lake and the heavens opened spectacularly. Thunder..Lightning...Wet Ducks...All that good stuff. And this song came on and blew me away. I had to listen to it on repeat during that walk because it just stunned me. Now it's always my storm song because that's when the magic hit me.

Is Moondance on that record? I've always preferred to hear it in the Autumn. It was nice to read you say that.

Okay, here we go....
I've done sound for Jason Aldean twice, and Dierks Bentley twice. Concerning the former, Aldean, you are correct. He is a talentless HACK. I know a friend of his, from back when he was nobody, and he is the PRODUCT of handlers and producers. He has an average voice, and no special talent, whatsoever!
Now, in the case of the latter, I LOVE Dierks Bentley. He has a unique voice, and actually has several songs that I find quite moving! My band does Long Trip Alone, and Come a Little Closer, and we get constant requests for these songs(and quite often, if one looks closely, tears will be streaming down my cheeks during LTA). Also, he is a very kind, friendly, down to Earth guy. Not a poser, by any stretch of the imagination. An absolute pleasure to work with.

Shelton and Morgan, I don't know much about them, other than Shelton is on some damned reality show, that I refuse to watch.

Ur mileage may vary!!!:wavey::woohoo:

Aldean is HUGE, unfortunately. Whoever is picking his songs, is doing the right thing. #1 after #1. I mean, they SUCK, but they're making him rich!

There's absolutely nothing country about them, and bar musicians in Nashville make fun of him. He always uses the word country in his lyrics, but that's as country as the song gets. Hard rock guitars, with a chorus like, "she's country". He's a joke, to real country musicians(although I'm sure we ALL wish we had his bank acct!!!!).

He's really probably the heir to Kenny Chesney's throne.

Me too. I've never understood his appeal. I mean, I think he's a very nice guy, but his music just does nothing for me. I always did like 10th Avenue Freeze Out, but that's that's the ONLY one!

Nah, Moondance is on Moondance (released in 1970), but that one is GREAT in the fall, you're right! I love Van the Man:nod: . I definitely recommend checking out Astral Weeks (1968) and No Guru (1986) if you haven't yet.

Yes. I have a similar way of listening to music. I always try to connect it with real situations from my life or with weather. For example, I tend to listen to "Rock a Little" mainly in the winter. I don't know why. Maybe it's because of the album cover and especially that coat that screams snowy, winter days. On the other hand, "Street Angel" is my summer album :)

How is Blondie overrated? They (because yes Blondie is a band) are so irrelevant I can't comprehend how they are even rated. Many of the posts in this thread come across as "artists I don't like" rather than artists that are actually overrated. Overrated to me is Adele, Justin Bieber, etc...

Blondie over rated, I guess I can see where that might be considered; but all together irrelevant I can't comprehend. I myself am a fan, and dig that whole CBGB time. Was a small "movement" (if you will) with bands such as Blondie, Talking Heads etc. A cool time. Not earth moving, but certainly not irrelevant.

Well as i said earlier in this thread......Overrated...as a term, really only applies to Critics and/or fanbase. I've heard plenty of fans go on about blondie, so technically they can be labeled overrated. that term really needs to go though:nod:

put it this way.....Stevie and the Mac can be labeled WAY overrated;) lol
