Hello all,
I realise this may seem an odd forum for the following post to be published on but any form of publicity is beneficial.
Chetwynde School, a great educational establishment has recently come into great difficulty.
Catering to students ages 3 and up Chetwynde provides a safe and loving environment for students to become great academics, talented sportspeople and valuable members of society. It facilitates the individual and in focussing on the student rather than league tables Chetwynde has motivated students to achieve record breaking exam results as well as reaching their potential. Chetwynde staff and students share a devotion and loyalty to the school because it is unique. The Chetwynde legacy is unforgettable and will not fade but this is not to say we ought to allow it be all that remains.
It has been for nearly a century one of the foremost establishments in the Furness area and has recently come to dominate academically and in sport the Lake District area. It needs support, I am not demanding money from you, though of course it would be welcome, only that if you feel the cause is a worthy one you support us through sharing the link to its donation website and the school website.
I haven't been asked to do this by the school nor have I announced that I am doing this but I desperately want to do something, anything in fact, that could possible help the Chetwynde. I have received so much from the school and now in my last year feel more than ever that Chetwynde deserves so much more back. As an eighteen year old there is little I can do but publicise the problems and hope someone more capable than I will be able to offer support to a school I love. Please, make known Chetwynde's need and please if you can re-post the links at the bottom of this post.
Yes, Chetwynde is an independent school but I, like my peers, do not hail from an incredibly wealthy family. I have received offers from St Andrews, Kings College London, Durham, Exeter and Heythrop, I am predicted A* results and I know that I would not have achieved any of this without the excellence and the ambition Chetwynde instils in all its students.
We are doing everything we can and if publicity can be raised for Chetwynde then perhaps with the means and the will would be alerted to our plight and offer support or further publicity.
If Chetwynde closes this will leave those part the way through their GCSE and A-Level exams the choice of paying triple the amount of fees to attend private schools over an hour away to continue or repeating a year. Moreover as the schools potential closure has only just been announced the deadline to apply to new schools has already passed. There are students who have learned at Chetwynde for nearly fifteen years and been raised more by Chetwynde than their hard working and accomplished parents who have given so much for their child to have the opportunities Chetwynde offers.
The deadline for applying to teaching posts has already passed. This leaves nearly 100 hundred staff without jobs for the next academic year, many of these have children in Chetwynde and have the additional worry of finding places for their children and some are single parents and would lose their only source of income if Chetwynde were to close.
Chetwynde offers discounts and bursaries to a large number of students; it is non-selective and as a results has allowed those who would have otherwise achieved average results achieve grades good enough for Oxford, Durham and St. Andrews. It is the finest school in the area and charges less than 50% of the fees demanded by all the other independent schools in the area.
Every year our choir and orchestra play carol concerts and visit the nearby homes for the elderly, blind and disabled. We have supported charities in Africa and causes closer to home and to our hearts. Now is the time Chetwynde needs the support of its community as to sustain its legacy of excellence, compassion and altruism.
Chetwynde offers academic subjects and those that are otherwise unavailable in the Furness area, Latin and Classical Studies for example. A thriving music and drama department and an almost unbeaten sports team (many of which have toured Europe with great success) would be lost should Chetwynde close. We can join tango groups, speech and drama, tango band, ceilidh band, folk group and so much more at Chetwynde. Students experience a unique and eccentric environment and come away with record breaking exam results.
I cannot stress enough the level of educational incompetence in our area and how significant Chetwynde’s presence is for many students and many parents. With the economic recession we have of course run into problems as many have done and this week it has become clear how deeply we were hit. But this is no reason for Chetwynde to close.
There has already been huge backlash against the closure of the school and we are well on our way to constructing a recovery of sorts. Publicising Chetwynde is something I desperately want to do and would greatly appreciate any who help me in doing this.
I realise this is not a cause many of you are personally involved moreover I realise you may object to the politics of an independent school but I hope a level of agapae and selflessness will allow you to extend support, and join me in publicising Chetwynde. This isn’t a cause to save private education rather a post to save jobs and the students whose educations would be disrupted and futures jeopardised.

I say again, my post here is not endorsed by Chetwynde School, I am simply a student there who cannot bear to see the school disappear or to see my teachers and peers find themselves adrift. I am lucky to have had the privilege of attending Chetwynde and luckier still to be heading towards university this September. If Chetwynde closes at the end of this academic year there will be many leaving us who will not be quite so lucky.
