Mick Fleetwood Blames Nicks For Fleetwood Mac Tour Trouble (http://www.contactmusic.com/news/mick-fleetwood-blames-nicks-for-mick-fleetwood-mac-tour-trouble_1303148)
Fleetwood Mac founder Mick Fleetwood fears the supergroup will never tour again because bandmate Stevie Nicks won't give up her latest solo dream.
The drummer reveals he and his bandmates were preparing for a major world trek in 2010 but then Nicks announced she was releasing a solo album and the plans stalled.
Two years later and Nicks is still touring on the back of her 2011 release, In Dreams, and has tour dates with Rod Stewart scheduled.
And Fleetwood, who performed on his bandmate's latest solo album, thinks the moment for a reunion tour has passed.
He tells Playboy magazine, "I don't believe Fleetwood Mac will ever tour again, but I really hope we do. We have rehearsed and prepared for it since 2010. We were supposed to tour in 2011, but we delayed it for a year to allow Stevie Nicks to support her solo record and for Lindsey Buckingham to do the same with his.
"I've always been supportive of my bandmates doing solo albums, so long as we kept our band together... I played drums on most of Stevie's album, the one she is still out there supporting and the one that is the reason that, for now, she refuses to do a Fleetwood Mac tour. It comes down to her.
"Stevie is really proud of her new album, and I get that, but she will not let it go... She's insistent upon working it (album) until it is incapable of growing further.
"I understand what she likes about her situation: Touring in support of her album, she is able to be her, without any degree of compromise. She doesn't have to worry about the other three of us asking her to do anything... She has become obsessed with her album in a very nice but inconvenient way."

I mean, I don't feel bad about her touring to promote the album. At least there's something to promote.
When Fleetwood Mac want to put out new material and tour to support it, then we can talk.
(then again I'd go see FM any time any where at the drop of a hat, no matter if they played Landslide on a loop and did the Tusk dance for 3 hours straight lmao)

Ummm, isn't that what Mick did with Rumours and Tusk? He's just got sour grapes because she's gone and made a great album that she is wisely promoting to its full capacity. She has earned the right to do this. For years, she juggled both acts and now I see her wanting to place a priority on her solo work. That doesn't mean she's abandoned the Mac.
Mick is probably irritated because 1). he likes to play on stage a lot and can't right now with the lineup he'd like; and 2) he is, as always, in need of cash.

Stevie is probably interested in a FM tour every 5 or so years. The Dance:1997. Say You Will:2003-4. Unleashed:2009. I'd bet she's planning a FM tour next year with no new album.
I think whiny Mick needs some money otherwise he should be happy touring with his side bands.

Hmm... Mick surely is trying to drum up (har har) a response from Stevie. My guess is he hasn't heard from her lately, and wants to get back out there.

Yes, I wonder if he's trying to provoke some sort of reassuring riposte from her? And needing/wanting to know when his next big payday is coming, yes, always.
My hunch, which might be ludicrously optimistic, is that they will tour in 2013, and that SN and LB might even take this year to write some new stuff for some sort of recording too.
What bothers me, and maybe it's the real subtext of what Mick is saying, is that they're just all getting so OLD that you have to wonder why Stevie thinks there's so much time to keep putting the important stuff off? But then again, maybe it's all to do with a habit certain people have of simply not believing that Stevie is as serious about her music as she says? Mick seems almost to deride how much Stevie believes in IYD - I wonder if he'd do the same with a Lindsey album?
However, let's not lose sight of the really important thing here: BRING YOUR SOLO TOUR TO BRITAIN, STEVIE, BEFORE I DO SOME DAMN FOOL THING LIKE BUYING A PLANE TICKET TO SEE YOU IN BOSTON IN JULY.

We all have different agendas, don't we? Ideal world, I'm right with you!
But if FM do tour outside North America/Australia without a new album, I will go and see them quite happily and not bother too much that other fans who have had the chance to see Stevie and/or FM every other year for more than a decade are missing the cherry on the top of their parfait. :p

Whether Mick thinks this or not, I Do!!! It's not that I don't think Stevie should support her album, she should. Still, she needs to make definite plans. She should say she's definitely for a 2013 FM album/tour.
Too much of the time, everyone in FM acts like they have forever to make plans.

I'm not surprised that Stevie prefers to support her latest album. For me it's a masterpiece and a thing of which she should be proud. I think she should go on to tour the world, not only US and Australia. There are so many countries to visit. "In Your Dreams" is the album that many people should get to know.

Stevie has said that Lindsey told her she shouldn't worry about rushing back to FM. So, it seems this is one time when Lindsey's being more supportive and understanding.

I'm of the opposite opinion of the posts I've read so far. Stevie is simply in denial. This album is over; no one noticed it but her own die-hards, despite the publicity such as tv appearances. Although I am myself a die-hard fan, and have been for thirty years, I can step away from that and see that she's stubbornly not accepting that the window for this album is closed. That's just the way the biz works.

If I were a European fan at this point, I wouldn't wait for Stevie or Fleetwood to come to me. I'd go to them if I ever expected to see them play again. You said as much yourself, above. They are old. With every passing year, it's probably getting less & less likely that they're going to travel overseas to play.
That goes for domestic fans, too, essentially. If you ever expect to see this band play, you'd better go to the next concert you hear about, especially if it's in your region. I get e-mail from some of you Nicks followers saying you still "haven't had the chance" to see her live. She's almost 65, isn't she? You'd better make the chance.

So Mick is complaining that Stevie is touring to support a new album released last year instead of another tour with Fleetwood Mac which has not produced a note of new music in 9 years:shrug:As usual his motives are mercenary.

I kinda see his point, she going to do the same exact show. by the time she came to Boston last year she had already condensed it , and she is going to do a hit set with rod , why bother .

Perhaps Stevie has finally decided that FM can rot. Without her, they have no leg to stand on, and when she works with them she only gets angry, frustrated and eventually exhausted.

There's no point in FM touring. It's a cash cow for Mick, plain and simple. For Stevie and Lindsey it's an uncreative and emotioanlly draining process that leaves them not wanting to see each other for years. Why bother?
Like I said in the Stevie thread, perhaps she's finally grown tired of supporting an old lover.

As a Fleetwood Mac fan, I want another Fleetwood Mac album very soon. Stevie needs to finish her solo plans and rejoin the Mac. Another tour without a new album is kinda pointless.

Agreed. I love you, Mick, but get a grip on reality. No new music since 2003. Diehards like us on here loved and didn't love certain things about the album, but overall is was the anticipation of the first brand new music since The Dance in 1997 that drove that tour. And we were thrilled. We were excited beyond words. Remember hearing the small snips of new tracks on the FM website back in early 2003? The track Say You Will was used as a promo for that 70's Show before we had the actual track, and I remember converting the commercial to mp3 and playing the bones out of it...because it was all so exciting and new. Unleashed in 2009 was all fine and good...we went to the shows and we loved it...but to tour again so soon without any new music is like beating a dead horse. I, for one, see and will see Fleetwood Mac whenever they come to Toronto. I'm happy hearing them play the standards and the stuff that made us love them - but to a degree. FM touring again so soon without a new album is not keeping your visibility fresh...it is making it quite stale, actually. You have to give people something to look forward to and care about. People that don't care about the new music will go to the shows anyway and have a pee or grab a drink while the new stuff plays, and the rest of us will go and sit through and love every minute of the shows. But I know that there are hardcore fans that refuse to see them again without new music. And with Christine gone, all the more reason to record again and keep things fresh. Great bands reinvent themselves. FM has been stellar for that up until recently.
Stevie, go and get your tour on (even if it is with Rusty Rod) and beat the s*** out of that record if you have to - you deserve it. Maybe Stevie, like the fans, wants something new and fresh to look forward to as well, and isn't crazy about touring with the same troop playing the same songs. She finally has something new on the go. Fleetwood Mac just shouldn't tour again until they record some new stuff.
And if they never record again, they'll all still be kicking in 2013 or 2014 - have a reunion tour then. You cant call it a reunion tour if you were all onstage together just three years ago. What's new about that?!?
Apologies for the epic, there.

Ha! She's done that before... I love it, and well said. Exactly. And perhaps Lindsey is thinking, "She won't record again with us without Dave Stewart producing? Eff that noise." He might feel bitter and resentful that Stevie basically said recording would stink without Stewart. And tension and frustrations abound on and on and on...
I just don't want things to get so bad that they never work together in any capacity again out of frustration and animosity. I don't want to hear "The Chain" down the road and go, "but they did break the chain...they said they never would..."

I don't think that having a solo career automatically means flipping the bird to her band. My theory is that she is reluctant to sign on with Fleetwood Mac again because she is in a more creative space in her life- probably due to Dave Stewart's influence. She has fallen in love with the idea of making new music again which, as a solo artist, has been an immensely freeing and gratifying experience. By contrast, her most recent experience recording with FM was tortuous and turned her off of recording for many, many years. Plus, when you enlist in "the army," it is a heavy-duty commitment. Fleetwood Mac does not just go out to play on the weekends. It is easily a full-year commitment, if not more, covering many markets, countries and continents. I'm sure she loves the idea of being in Fleetwood Mac more than the actual drudgery that goes with working with Fleetwood Mac. I don't blame her one bit. Why should she drop everything and dive headlong into another grueling marathon oldies tour fraught with drama and politics, when she can continue to play her new music surrounded by a band that adores her? It's a no-brainer to me.

Amen, Ed. I agree with this whole-heartedly. Life is way too short to spend it being anything but happy and free. I do enjoy seeing Fleetwood Mac, but honestly, without new music, what's the point?
Hmm...where to begin with all of Mr. Fleetwood's alleged statements...
Ay yi yi...what hypocrisy. I think it's great that Stevie wants to go out and perform something new and fresh (despite some of the older tired staples) rather than go back to old mother hubbard fleetwood. He accuses her of milking it (and some other poster on here)? Umm, hello? Isn't that what FM has been doing to Rumours for 35 years? Give me a break! Rehearsing and preparing since 2010? Didn't they just come off the road in 2009?????
I think Stevie should tour in 2013/14 for this just as well for Mick's smartass comments just to stick it to him lol!!!!!
Now, I should add that if the Fleetwoods want to make a new album and tour then I retract all above statements.

HOWEVER, if you just read Mick's words and don't read the rest of the article it's really not THAT bad. Playboy (or whoever wrote the article about the Playboy interview?) just place his words in ways that make everything he said a lot more selfish and condescending than what they actually are.

I'm pretty sure (although I have been wrong before) the original poster was referring to MICK, not Lindsey. There is no indication that Lindsey ever wanted to tour this year, other than in support of his own stuff (or, in support of Buckingham/Nicks).

Lindsey sounded like he was looking forward to a tour this year. He said he would be surprised if they didn't tour. He didn't say he wanted to exactly, but I assume that he and his accountant did.
However, when Stevie said she wanted to concentrate more on promoting IYD he said that was understandable, since she had more fun working on it than she'd had in a long time.

Such a tender way Mick has in reaching out to Stevie 3 months after her mother has passed: "Stevie, I need money. Fall in line here." What a loser. He should support her in whatever endeavor she wants to pursue. Mick should try some session work. He knows without Stevie and Lindsey he's SOL.

I can understand Mick from his perspective, sort of. My guess is that after he finished touring his Blues album, he's just sitting around, waiting for Fleetwood Mac.
Yet, Stevie and Lindsey are both preoccupied with their own solo ventures. He's essentially saying that Stevie is beating her album into the ground; he may be right about that, but that is her prerogative!
I don't like the idea of the prospect of them touring, yet again, without a new album to promote. It casts the band in a cash-grab, stale mode of existence. Any revelence and artistic integrity that the Fleetwood Mac brand had, is slowly eroding.
Unless they did something radical or unique- like drastically changing the set list, or adding former band members to the mix, they are at risk of being at the level of a Vegas or state faire, has-been band. It would great if they did something like performing Tusk in it's entirety, but without Christine in the mix, that would be unlikely.

Well, IIRC, she didn't do all that much touring for the album last year.
And if she wants to do more--that's her perogative. She doesn't owe Mick anythng, at this point. And, if he wants to tour in 2013, he better stop burning bridges.
If you're friends, you're friends. You support each other. And, if you can't--well, this is what I hate about Mick (and, really, most of FM). Burn your bloody bridges in private. At least maintain a tone of civility in public.
Because, when they all get back together and start singing Kumbaya again, everyone looks completely stupid (or whoreish, or both).

"The drummer reveals he and his bandmates were preparing for a major world trek in 2010 but then Nicks announced she was releasing a solo album and the plans stalled."
The drummer prepared. Exactly what does that involve? Did he write some new songs? Is he planning on singing? Stevie and Lindsey are both working. They both put out new albums.
I agree Regina. Stevie didn't really get to support her new album. The major New York promotion was totally cancelled out. Stevie did her Rod thing, she got sick. She tried to get the new album out and was sick, missed a few key engagements. Apparently her mother was becoming ill. Then she lost her mother. And Mick is trying to publicly command Stevie "to heel," like a dog?
Again, what has the drummer prepared? A list of his bills? His sense of entitlement?
It's shocking. But it's not.

Yep, my bet is Mick is in need of some cold hard cash. I think Stevie has long ago paid any debt she owes to Fleetwood Mac. She was not the one who left before a booked major tour, she has forgiven Mick time and time again for other things that he has said or done. The article may have embellished a bit, but this is the second shifty thing I've read him say in recent interviews. I surely don't think this is the way to get her back in line. She is living for herself and Imo trying to sure up her solo legacy. If Lindsey is being supportive why wouldn't her "best friend"? Maybe we might get a Buckingham Nicks/ double solo material tour from Lindsey and Stevie. Ahhh! In My Dreams right? (pun intended). Do what you damn well please MAMA its your turn.

There was a Fleetwood Mac BEFORE Stevie Nicks, there was a Fleetwood Mac WITHOUT Stevie Nicks. Maybe it's time to permanently kick her to the curb and get people who WANT to be in Fleetwood Mac.
It's not like Fleetwood Mac is keeping her from an income. However, the opposite is possibly true. Mick's not taking Fleetwood Mac on the road because she doesn't want to? Hell with her...make an album & go on the road with just the guys. It'd probably be a whole lot more fun without the PBFH pouting & throwing tantrums.

Ditto! Jebus, FM just did a major tour 3 years ago. Unless FM unveil & release some MAJOR vault goodies that no one has heard or seen, release a new album, or even EP - I am not interested in another "Unleashed" greatest hits outing slapped together and called a reunion  Mick must really been in need of a major payday. Stevie has saved his ass & padded his bank account for decades, Now let her do what she wants, because she CAN! And the fact she blew off FM again in 2012 is very telling about how unhappy she's been w/ FM in general. I would rather have a happy Stevie than a robotic Stevie going through the motions of another FM greatest hits tour. They need to be all on the same page, Otherwise, I'd actually prefer Stevie & Lindsey just continue releasing new solo material.

If Mick wants to get pisssy about anything, it shouldn't be that she wants to tour to support In Your Dreams, but instead the fact that she's grabbing for cash with another Rod tour, instead of going out with the Mac which would, I'm sure, net the same, if not more, money.

I had this thought, too. Spin it another way and what Mick said was he didn't think they would tour but he still hoped they would. He also said Stevie was obsessed with her album in a nice way, but that it was inconvenient.
This, though, becomes an NME headline screaming FLEETWOOD MAC WILL NEVER TOUR AGAIN.
Having said that, I do think Mick was probably being quite candid about his frustration with a lack of firm plans for FM. I think when you start getting well up there age-wise, every year is precious, and you want to know how you'll be spending them.
This is one of those occasions when I wish we had the whole interview and were able to see or hear how things were said. I'm kind of disappointed that he would not be more patient/compassionate towards Stevie in public, given that she only lost her mom not even three months ago. Having said THAT, though, I do kind of facepalm over the whole Rod thing.
As for FM going out on the road without her - sure, why not? As my dad used to say, 'If they were playing in the back yard, I wouldn't lift the blind to see them', but I'm sure someone would.

Christine retired and received quite the backlash. (Mostly from Lindsey)
Stevie is now getting the same pressure.
I feel if Stevie wants to tour with Rod and do her own thing, then I think at this point in her career she deserves to do whatever the hell she wants.
SHE HAS EARNED IT.
Honestly, I think Fleetwood Mac sucks since SYW.
I very much like both Linsdey and Stevie's solo work. Stevie's voice bothers me a little, but her album had some very cool tunes. I listened to it 3 times back to back to back..

They are old. With every passing year, it's probably getting less & less likely that they're going to travel overseas to play.
You're right, man.

I say let her continue to do whatever she wants if she wants to continue touring and promoting and riding out the In Your Dreams era chapter of her life. That woman through the years has stopped and halted her solo tours and plans to run back to Fleetwood Mac and be loyal so it's about time she gets to do what she wants without feeling guilt. What's another year? FM can wait. And like fans have said, I'm sure most would rather her tour in support of new music than to hear yet another Greatest Hits tour from FM. Mick needs to just chill for awhile. Stevie will get around to FM soon enough.

God I'd love to buy you a beer.:woohoo:

If Stevie's stringing them along, then Mick has a point. It's really not fair to the band if she's agreeing to tour and then changing her mind to support an album that was a bomb. It's really not fair to guys like Neale and Brett, if not Mick and John, to constantly have to make alternate arrangements.
At this point, I think it may be time to either pull the plug on Fleetwood Mac altogether or bring in a new girl, but only if they commit to it, as in making a few more albums. (For some reason, Cyndi Lauper seems like a good fit.)

I guess I have the lone opinion of at least sympathizing with Mick (to a degree). Mick, John, and Lindsey all depend on Fleetwood Mac tours for their livelihoods. They all have families & children to support, unlike Stevie. Even if Stevie is avoiding Fleetwood Mac as a vendetta against Lindsey, she's hurting John & Mick by default.
That being said, I totally understand why she's not giving the Mac the time of day currently. I eject anyone & anything from my life that drags me down & impedes my happiness. If Fleetwood Mac does that to Stevie (which it clearly does), then I can totally sympathize with her decision to avoid the band. She's too old for that kind of nonsense. She needs to enjoy her golden years & has certainly earned the right do spend them however she pleases.
As a side note: if all Fleetwood Mac is doing from here out is oldies tours, I'm not interested & could see why Stevie wouldn't really be either. She's clearly had the time of her life recording her latest solo album, and she's in a creative mood. Why get drug back into the corporate concert machine?

Stevie has earned the right to do whatever she wants & makes her happy at this stage in her career AND life! Am I euphoric about the Rod Stewart/H&S continuing? No. But, I would much rather see Stevie happy at this point, and playing her solid & great new songs along with her classics than doing another Greatest Hits "Unleashed" type tour slapped together and called a reunion! Screw FM! "In Your Dreams" is Stevie's best work in decades & is not even a year old yet! Will it sell a gazillion more copies? No, of course not, but that is not the point. Even if she just sells 50K more copies, she is pushing a record that she strongly believes in, and that is her prerogative. It simply does not matter anymore to have a mainstream hit. Stevie didn't pander to trends with this record. She made a classic sounding & SOLID record for the ages. One in which the majority of her hardcore fans (her harshest critics) simply ADORE!

And with Christine gone,l the more reason to record again and keep things fresh.
No apologies necessary. It was said perfectly. Mic needs to save his money, buy a trailer and move to Florida. Mama can tour with Rod, Tom, Don, Peter , Paul and Mary if she wants to. She's happy on these tours but she looks like she's just going through the motions on the FM tours. If she should decide to tour again Stevie should sit those boys down (lindsey Mic and John) and tell them how SHE wants it to go down. She holds the power and she no longer needs to babysit Lindsey and his ego.
Amen, Ed. I agree with this whole-heartedly. Life is way too short to spend it being anything but happy and free. I do enjoy seeing Fleetwood Mac, but honestly, without new music, what's the point?

Bring in a new girl???? That didn't work when they tried it before. I doubt Lindsey would be down with that. Just do the men of Mac Thang that has been brought up before. Lindsey is filling his time wisely and unless he lied to Stevie about taking her time then I don't see where its anyone but Mick whineing. None of us will enjoy it if Stevie is doing something because she's being told by The Mac your solo album is over and your wasteing your time and ours. Talk about a pissed off unhappy resentful bitch they will all wish for the good old days when she just pissed off with Lindsey like usual. I want the Stevie I saw on tour last year. The smile on her face , the pep in her step, priceless to me. Who knows where the truth lies. Stevie has made it clear she plans to go back to the Mac when she feels like she is done with IYD's. The documentary is not out yet, Europe has not been tapped, so 2013 is the earliest I see it happening. Mick is just trying to bully her I doubt he have the nerve to say those things to or about Lindsey.

Oh, they ofcourse will tour again. Fleetwood Mac....is not Fleetwood Mac.....unless there is some kind of fight. That tension and those egos, personalities.........are all of the reasons we love to see them on stage. If they were all just in love and peace with each other........we wouldn't be so interested. That is part of what makes them one of the VERY BEST live bands...still around. And, If I have to wait until 2013.......than I am cool with that.

No one was saying anything bad about Lindsey in this thread. Now if you someone came in defending Mick, maybe I could understand. But what's more ridiculous than excessive bashing is excessive defensiveness, especially when it is unfounded.
I love EVERYONE. I just wish they would all stop talking bad about each other in the press, and get these things worked out behind closed doors.
If asked about plans for FM to tour, all Mick had to say was, "Nothing is concrete yet. I hope we do, but we have to get everyone's schedules on the same page first."
Which basically sums up to the same conclusion as we got from what he actually said, but with a lot less fighting words!
I love Lindsey, and haven't bashed him so I'm not sure why you used my quote to make your point.

You say that Lindsey wants to record a new FM album, but where is the proof? What's stopping he, Mick and John from going into the studio and laying down basic tracks while Stevie is on the road- exactly like they did for SYW? I don't get the sense that Lindsey is too keen on dealing with the other three at the moment. I mean, for chrissakes, he'd rather play ale houses and pubs solo rather than large arenas with the band!
And you are totally mistaken when it comes to Stevie's songs on IYD. Yes, they were mostly co-written. But at the end of the day, she wrote or co-wrote every song on that album. No Rolling Stones covers in the bunch! :p Also, these were mostly new songs written specifically for IYD. I'd say 9-10 out of 14 songs were new. That's unprecedented for a Stevie album. This album is so new, it should have been sold with training wheels!

She spoke for years after SYW about how horrible it was to still be fighting with him in her 50s, and how nasty the recording sessions & tour for SYW was. If there's a reason why Stevie is avoiding spending much time with Fleetwood Mac this past decade, it's Lindsey. The unfortunate thing is that the rest of the band is suffering financially because Stevie & Lindsey can't figure out how to coexist... you think they'd be able to get it together now that they're both nearly able to draw social security. :p

Don't you find it humorous they can get along on outside projects since the 70s (Walter Egan, John Stewart, etc) up to and including last year's In Your Dreams (Soldier's Angel), but for some untold reason they just can't get along in Fleetwood Mac.:wavey:

My 2 cents? Mick sets himself up for this. He starts passing comments about how FM will tour later in the year, next year etc., without any solid commitment from Stevie and possibly LIndsey. Some news outlet picks it up and then if you do a google search you can find 25 places where they quote Mick as FM to tour again soon to create some false sense of buzz.
So then nothing happens and he blames Stevie and if necessary Lindsey for their lack of loyalty to him and essentially pits them as them as the bad guys for failing to meet the high demand for another GH FM tour...like we are lining up for that. Whatever Mick.
Last time I checked the SYW tour ended about a year and a half after being released. So who is he to judge anything the Queen of Rock does, especially touring behind an album that got short changed because of being sick and wait, her own mother being super sick and passing away.
Jealous Much Mick?

Yeah, but Stevie changes her tune on LB all the time, it's like a trademark. One minute JW is the love of her life, and working with LB is awful. The next minute, LB is her "musical soulmate", the love of her life and saved her most special song. It's an old story.

^ If I'm not mistaken, Stevie's given sole composition credit on all of her Mac stuff sans like Seven Wonders and The Chain and whatnot. The band does not just automatically get writing credit, which is why it is such a big deal for Mick and John to tour and such because they don't get the same amount of royalties.
I think the reason is because Stevie comes up with the chord progression and the melody. Fleetwood Mac 'fills it in' (and I say this somewhat tongue-in-cheek, because it's more like.. makes a complete song around the string of notes that she has). That's why songs like Secret Love, Moonlight, Soldier's Angel, and a plethora of other solo songs in her catalogue are also credited solely to her. Obviously Stevie is not writing bass parts or writing guitar riffs or anything like that, and she never has, she's always just come up with a progression, a tune, lyrics, and some atmosphere for the players to work off of.
With Dave, he was the one initially coming up with chord progressions which she would then sort of simultaneously compose a melody over... which is why, along with gratitude for his help, I think, he gets the sole credit for the music.
Additionally, people like Mike Campbell or Neale will just send her straight up musical tracks which she then puts lyrics to [or adapts lyrics to] - similar to what went on with Dave, in a sense, only not "live." The music is already complete when she gets it. With Dave it was a living breathing entity that could change or transform along the way to the final product.
If I'm wrong, feel free to correct me. This is just how I've always understood it to work.

Why not? It's true.
its true but its not something that a lot of weight should be put into. She wrote all the words and was in the same room as Dave was playing the music. She's not a musician. even when she "writes the music" it's gonna get changed eventually by the producers so whether it says S. Nicks or S. Nicks D. Stewart shouldn't really matter. Hell every Beatles song by either Paul Mcartney and John lennon is credited to Lennon/Mcartney despite how obvious the song was written by one or the other.
The point is She was heavily involved in creating ruffly 1w New songs (im including Moonlight for the added parts) with Secret Loveand Anabell Lee being her only fully old songs that were not used on other albums. Thats what elle was saying. That stevie didnt create anything new on IYD other then SA.

Don't you find it humorous they can get along on outside projects since the 70s (Walter Egan, John Stewart, etc) up to and including last year's In Your Dreams (Soldier's Angel), but for some untold reason they just can't get along in Fleetwood Mac.:wavey:
To be fair, being around someone for the short period of time it takes to do those side projects (a few days, most of the time, no?) is a lot different than months on end, day to day, when recording an album or going on tour.
However it is a bit ridiculous/amusing the extremes that they categorize each other in depending on those situations, as you insinuated. When they see each other for a one-off sort of thing, they've rekindled, their relationship has been rejuvenated, they're closer than they have been since the day they met at a Young Life meeting. But put them in a room together for more than a week and they sing a completely different tune. Too much of a good thing, I suppose.

I know I'm in the Rumours forum where I have to expect more Stevie-bashing than in her own forum, but still I'm surprised. People complained ad nauseum about Unleashed....rehashing the same old songs, milking Rumours, being creatively bankrupt, etc., and now people are upset because Stevie isn't rushing out to do that again???? Surely all of us (including Homer McVie with his distaste for "Tumours" :wavey:) can see the irony of Mick saying "She just won't let it go."
I want to be clear, though, I would have a whole different response if Mick was talking about making a new album, but all he wants to do is tour. He should really focus on finding a way to make Fleetwood Mac interesting again. We get Rhiannon, Gold Dust Woman, and Landslide whenever Stevie steps on stage. Why not see her solo and also get Moonlight, Annabel Lee, and For What It's Worth instead of seeing Fleetwood Mac and getting only the staples? And couldn't you make a similar argument for Lindsey?

Stevie put her solo career on hold for almost a DECADE for Fleetwood Mac
I don't get this.. what decade? Before Bella Donna there wasn't a Stevie solo career, she got famous in Fleetwood Mac and before that she belonged to a band called Buckingham Nicks. And the 1994-2001 gap.. is not almost a decade, I think. And within that time there was only one Fleetwood Mac album: The Dance
The 2001-2011 gap, it's a decade yes, but there were just 2 FM albums; Say You Will and the Live in Boston... I think there was more reasons for not recording a studio album, beyond Fleetwood Mac
. Let's face it, there is no Fleetwood Mac without Stevie.
Oh yes, there is a Fleetwood Mac without Stevie Nicks, but not as successful as they would want. I mean, I say this, not thinking as a fan. Probably I (and many of us) would find interesting to see Mick, John and Lindsey (and probable any new member), but do you think the general public would? Not at all, I'm sure. A tour with just those three would be a short one. Ok, you may answer me Who cares! I'd go to see them. But I do believe that Mick, John or Lindsey do care! A Fleetwood Mac tour in small theatres, or clubs... after being so successful during the Unleashed tour (I remember the AA arena at Dallas, almost sold out! Thousand of souls enjoying the show!)... not to mention the huge 70s tours... I don't think they would enjoy it.
Bob Brunning mentioned it in his book about the Time tour.. Fleetwood Mac sharing the stage with Reo Speedwagon.. :distress:
Again, think like a common guy who likes FM wants to see them, not a die-hard fan. Fleetwood Mac without Christine.. and now without Stevie? It's like.. Beatles with Paul & Ringo, and some other supporting players. Hummm..... That would be more a Paul tour than a Beatles tour
While we're on this subject I would like to see Beyonce drop her solo career for a while and get back together with Destiny's Child and make a new album and go on tour.
 beyonce makes more or the same money recording and touring on her own as she would w/ DC.

so, whose fault is it that there's no new FM music?!?!?! certainly not mick's.
Are you sure? Mick is asking for a tour, not for any new music. As I pointed out in my post in the Rumours forum (the one which led you to direct me here), he wants to go out and rehash the old hits, and that kind of Fleetwood Mac tour doesn't offer anything to Stevie fans.....we get Dreams, Rhiannon, and Landslide either way. With a solo tour, we'll also get some awesome new IYD tracks. If Mick wants Fleetwood Mac to live eternally, he has to get them to do something interesting, and another Unleashed tour isn't it.

Stevie writes her lyrics and her melodies-- It IS music. The lyrics and the melody are the heart of a song. The melody is the identifiable tune of the song that you hum and everyone recognizes as Dreams or Gypsy or Landslide or whatever. That's why she gets credit for words and music. What she doesn't do is arrange her music in a way that fleshes it out from a solo piano piece to a full band arrangement-- i.e. writing the accompanying, complementary drum/guitar/bass parts. But guess what ? Very few writers do.... That's what producers and arrangers do, and every single band uses one. That's what Jimmy Iovine did for Petty, what John Landau did for Springsteen, what George Martin did for the Beatles, what Rob Cavallo and RIchard Dashut have done with Lindsey. When other people send her a musical track, she writes a melody and lyrics to that as well.

Actually, they got along very well during Unleashed and have had nothing but warm fuzzies since. Both of them are still on record as being in favor of another Fleetwood Mac tour. All Stevie has said is that she was promoting IYD and that when she decided to extend a push on it into this year that Lindsey was supportive of that. I don't think they are on bad terms right now at all. I think Stevie is more concerned that would happen in doing an album. And, possibly Lindsey is not interested in touring without one? I could see him not wanting to do another 'hits only' tour. Maybe with Stevie doing new material she's getting more accustomed to the feel and will embrace new FM possibilities.

I'm surprised that Mick is being so candid, but in the end, Stevie loves him and she's not really inclined to fight with him -- as she is with other people. She'll stay mad with him about as long as she can throw him.
Next month this time he'll probably be giving interviews kissing her feet. I guess what he wants from this passive/agressive commentary is some kind of firm commitment from her for 2013 and I suppose he'll get it.

Spoken as a true Fleetwood Mac fan!
Although making decisions that a good for you can have a negative results for others.
I've said that many times myself. Recruit some new members. Obviously the fame of the late 70's ain't coming back, but FM can still do something!
I'm with you too louie. Mick and John (don't know his take on this) depend on the writers for income. Or put another way "Mick and John depend on the entity of Fleetwood Mac for income."
I think you're on to something. Mick's jealous of Stevie doing a cash grab of her own with Rod Stewart rather than with the Mac, where he could cash in too. Damn her!
I find it curious that she wants to tour with Rod Stewart and not a quick Fleetwood Mac tour. I know that "quick" and "Fleetwood Mac" mix like oil and water, but can't it be possible?

This is the kind of tripe that I laugh at. "Babysitting" Lindsey and his ego? So Lindsey can't go out independently- as he has done MANY TIMES over and over and over again- without Stevie watching over him? I guess he has to call her for advice on his next album or for her input on his next songs? Honestly, can you actually justify some of the things you all say to slam Lindsey? It's obvious some of you- not all of course- have something against him for whatever reason and that is your prerogative. But you really ought to consider the things you say. The above is absolutely false. Babysitting Lindsey and his ego. Lindsey OWNS the stage when he is on it and he is mesmerizing. Not to slight Stevie because she has star power for sure, but you have no right to diminish what Lindsey has and sum his amazing talent to "ego" and nothing more.
Have you any clue the amount of greatness this man has done WITHOUT any input whatsoever from Stevie? Probably not, because it's all Stevie stars in your eyes. Anyone else, especially Lindsey, is just a side man. And that's too bad.

Stevie does as well. Anyone who is in show business for a long enough time and had to endure highs and lows has one. But people use this far too much with Lindsey. You are not being balanced whatsoever. It's like you're basically saying: Stevie did him a favor by making the album and supporting it and performing live. She made sacrifices for him, the ego-maniac who totally depends on HER to stroke his ego. And that is false. Lindsey forges ahead with or without Stevie time and time again. Steve -- you've been a fan longer than many of us. Don't you think that if Mick really wanted to tour as Fleetwood Mac, he'd find a way? I'd even wager that if he proposed a "just the guys" tour at this moment in time, Stevie'd give them her blessing! It's Mick who insists that Fleetwood Mac is now "Stevie & Lindsey Or Bust." If you're gonna be ticked at anyone, be ticked at him.
Personally, I think Stevie should do whatever the hell she wants to. She's more than earned the right, and she shouldn't be held responsible for her band-mates' livelihood. They're all adults with skills of their own -- they should be able to survive without her.

I respect Lindsey but I love my Stevie. Without over stating it I just feel that Stevie needed Lindsey like Lindsey needed Stevie for different reasons but that was a double edged sword. As Lindsey has stated many many times that sometimes he resented helping Stevie with her music. Well, as a producer that is his job. I think some of her music was adversely effected by his producing. And lastly (and this is solely my opinion)-i feel that there is an arrogance to his experimental techniques on many of the fleetwood Mac albums. I think it started with Tusk and it peaked with albums like Tango in the night (family man)...the music sacrificed due to his indulgence. Imo Say You Will is a great album but once again Lindsey was a mad man in the studio.
Again this is solely my opinion..But Fleetwood Mac is better than Family Man and Diane and Come and Welcome to room Sara and etc:D

And if I hear the sexist garbage that those three men need money more than Stevie does because they have families to support, I think I'll vomit. Come on let's be honest here, Fleetwood Mac has stagnated since 1995. I have no problem with Stevie moving on, like 13 members before her. What I don't understand is why FM don't bring in some new blood or do a tour with the three of them plus perhaps a few special guests. Sure so Stevie brings the crowds, but perhaps it is time for them to change musical style, be creative and look beyond Stevie.
Mick, John and Lindsey won't fill big venues but there would still be a nice bit of cash to be made in smaller venues and they (or perhaps just Mick) might learn to get back to making music for the sake of making music.

If they insist on continually touring the same old music with the same old formula then maybe they should call it a day. They shouldn't have to rely on Stevie to tour. After all, the band existed before her and they were still successful. New blood, new music, new audience. They need to change or they'll forever be known as "that band that used to be cool" or "that band your dad likes".

I think this is a little overblown too, however, I do think that there are politics within the band and especially among Stevie and Lindsey. I DO think that Stevie does try to be the peacemaker in the relationship more often than not, and I think that nods like playing on SA might be a bit of that. I do not think, however, that it is ALL that. I honestly do think that she asked Lindsey to play on that song because she truly thought that he would add the magic that it needed, a mood, atmospheric guitar parts and their brilliant harmony which I've always loved and think is their strongest asset as a duo. Another wrinkle to this though, is that I think when Stevie gets stumped or insecure about her music she oftentimes runs to Lindsey to help her out. He's a bit of a security blanket for Stevie; always has been. So, I kind of think her collaboration with Lindsey on SA is more about Stevie's worries about perfecting a song she feels very passionately about rather than stroking Lindsey's ego.

Spot on!!!

Ha-ha! Well stated! "Old Mother Hubbard Fleetwood" indeed!
I think Stevie should promote IYD as long as she wants. Who knows? This may be her last solo album. After that, if FM wants to do a new album with new songs, then great! Tour by all means! But I am not interested in another GH tour. I'm over that. If they want to pull out mostly obscure songs they've never/rarely performed live, I'd go for THAT, but that'll never happen.

There was a Fleetwood Mac BEFORE Stevie Nicks, there was a Fleetwood Mac WITHOUT Stevie Nicks. Maybe it's time to permanently kick her to the curb and get people who WANT to be in Fleetwood Mac.
Hell with her...make an album & go on the road with just the guys. It'd probably be a whole lot more fun without the PBFH pouting & throwing tantrums.
Yeah, but Mick wants to make some money. Without Stevie, there goes his payday. I mean seriously, a tour with just the guys? I hope you were just being rhetorical.
Also, I think Stevie does want to be in Fleetwood Mac, she's just unwilling to let Mick tell her when she should be a part of it. He's not her daddy. She's a grown girl who can do what she wants. Mick can pipe down.

I think a huge part of it is Lindsey's unwavering reluctance to embrace what made him famous. He wants nothing to do with what he doesn't consider arty. I think it drives the rest of them crazy. I also think it's a huge part of why mama was so pissed for the Say You Will record/tour. I think everyone was on eggshells because they were afraid he might run off again and in the end the result suffered.

There are plenty of bands from the 60's & 70's who are still touring (and making MORE than a decent income)...and they MIGHT have one, MAYBE two, members of their most well-known lineup. Heck, most people couldn't even name ONE member of some of those bands, but "they were always one of my favorites"...so, what the hell, get Cyndi Lauper, get Rick Vito (if Lindsey won't do it without Stevie), get the damned guitar player from a Fleetwood Mac tribute band (like David Lee Roth did for a solo tour by getting his guitar player from a VH trib band).

I read the entire article and I actually sympathize with Mick. I totally get where he's coming from. If Stevie had committed and said she was going to do the tour, I get being totally let down by her dropping out to continue to tour for In Your Dreams.
Whilst I love the album itself, why continue touring with Rod when I'm pretty sure the only songs she'll probably keep in the set are Moonlight and Secret Love. Surely that's not her way of touring for a new album? Sure, I've seen the few dates where she'll be solo, but still. If it's really that much of a bother to her, pull what other bands do and throw your solo stuff into the bands setlist. Hell, they already do Stand Back, don't they? Mick played on Secret Love, Lindsey could sure as hell play the guitar bits obviously, throw that track in and give Lindsey his spot for Go Insane and some other track of his for crying out loud.
There are so many ways they could get around this. And it sucks that Mick feels that way. Sure, Stevie is in her 60s and she has the right to do whatever she wants whenever she wants, but if I had the type of life Mick did, I'm sure he loves being out on the road and I'd be a little upset too if things were going into motion and then just stopped all of a sudden due to changes of heart. Such is life, and again I get it, but it still doesn't make the situation feel any better.
Unlike Mick, I think Fleetwood Mac will tour again, because they all seem to always go back to the Mac Club after a while and most of Stevie's solo plans never pan out anyway (Hey, how'd ya'll all like that Rhiannon movie, eh?) so I'm not going to go ahead and weep about the soon-to-exist "R.I.P. Fleetwood Mac" just yet.
Also, on an un-related note, just to play Devils Advocate here, besides "touring" for In Your Dreams with Rod this year (with, I'm sure, hardly any songs from it), how is she any better if her reasoning for not touring is there being no new material and just oldies? Now I know this hasnt been said by any party involved and just thrown around here, but surely she has no room to talk? Within' the past 20 years, the Mac have only done two Greatest Hits tours (The Dance and Unleashed) while Stevie has toured 6 times that I count with no new material and just oldies (Enchanted Tour, her Vegas set, tour with Don Henley, the Gold Dust tour, the Crystal Visions tour, and her summer 2008 tour).
If Stevie did say she'd do the tour, then I think both parties are at fault. I can understand Mick being upset, but he shouldn't be taking it out on Stevie as she has the right to do whatever she pleases and if Stevie did agree to a tour, then she shouldn't have backed out after agreeing to it in the first place as the rest of the band was counting on her commitment. Here's hoping Fleetwood Mac can sort their **** out. I still want a new album for my collection before they're all being pushing around in wheelchairs.
Edit: Or Hell, tour without Stevie and re-name the band Fleetwood Buckingham Mac. LOL I kid.

Yeah, Mick is clearly playing the pity card here. I don't begrudge the fact that he must be going through an extremely unsettling, introspective time in the wake of his divorce, which is certainly not being helped by the fact that he is sitting idly within his home these days surrounded by memories. But why did he need to do this type of an article for Playboy? What is he promoting? My suspicion is that he feels abandoned because his Mac comrades did not rally around him in his time of need. So in a sense he is rejecting the rest of them before they get a chance to reject him. However, he is lacking the stones to confront them individually, so he is airing his grievances in this public forum. Passive aggressively.
So will Mick's stunt work? Absolutely. Stevie does not want the blood of Fleetwood Mac on her hands and Mick knows it. I can understand Mick feeling out of sorts and unsure about his life at the moment, but when the dust settles, he will realize that he's playing with fire. Nothing is more near and dear to him than Fleetwood Mac- not even his children. When he realizes it's all he has left, he will be back to scheming and politicking for a reunion.
Josh2003
03-16-2012, 03:53 PM
Seriously, what is his motivation for this article/stunt? Complain and cry to the masses that because of his divorce and lack of anything of not outside of FM, Stevie is causing him to go broke? I've long felt Mick was nothing but a snake oil salesman, and this just makes that perception of him stronger.
And can he cut it out with the dramatics? "Fleetwood Mac will never tour again." Because Stevie is putting the band on hold a little while longer? Calm down and go put out some more wine and focus on your restaurant.
Christopher
03-16-2012, 04:03 PM
Besides being passive aggressive, I also think he's being one BIG drama queen, suggesting FM will never tour again, or in his mind the band may be over because of Stevie's over obsession about IYD:rolleyes:& his need to not be co-dependant and intervene, beg & whatever else he claims to do to get everyone in line. He clearly had his motives in doing this interview AND to stir up the FM rumour machine once again. Because, Puleeze, unless someone get's sick or something, FM will be touring in 2013/2014!
What's more unsettling is he is practically groveling on & on about using FM as a million dollar ATM machine & not continuing on as a creatively productive band. His comparison to The Eagles is also very telling about his motives, It's all about lining his pockets with MORE money at this point!
Though I do feel a little more compassion for his situation, I absolutely still think Stevie has every right to continue to tour behind In Your Dreams. If Mick were pushing for a new record then tour, that would be a totally different scenario, but he clearly is not, and wants his payday sooner than later!

I don't know. I think Stevie might have changed a little. Mick said the shilly-shallying felt different this time and he might be right.
They're also both dealing with major life traumas at the moment, and that can make people reckless. I hope I'm wrong and that they sort it out, just because I don't like to think of people with so much history being estranged. That makes me sad. :o

Also, who knows how long Mick's marriage has been on the rocks and for what reasons. Stevie's been notoriously close to Mick's family, perhaps it's not inconceivable for Stevie to also be upset at Mick regarding the ending of the marriage caused by something he did. Wow....what an interview. I wondered why Lynn wasn't with Mick in the photo of the other article from yesterday and thought briefly, "divorce?" Today confirms it. The title even has to cause one to create all sorts of conjectures in their mind relating to Mick, Stevie, and money, The Ghost of Fleetwood Mac? Now....wouldn't it beat all if Stevie's next single release (and one has to wonder when that will happen) would be, "Ghosts Are Gone!" How fitting and apt!
There is more to this story, a lot more as to what happened between Stevie, Mick, Lynn, Lindsey, John, and Christine, perhaps indeed this time the, "Ghosts Are Gone!" I have to wonder if this is more about relationships than it is money?
Fleetwood Mac with it's current lineup may very well be done but will Mick and John do as they have in the past and transform themselves again? I feel like it's too late for that even. And that coveted last album looks like it's never going to happen. So Mick thinks Stevie let him, John, and Lindsey down, but they all let down their fans! It's going to take a miracle to make a new album or tour happen at this point! Age is against them which means time is too.
If money is a problem maybe that tell all book about other band members, one in particular, Stevie, may very well come into fruition?

If you give someone power over you, that does not mean you are their victim or are at their mercy. The responsibility is still yours. So, maybe he let Lynn decide which homes they would decorate. He abrogated that task. It was still his choice too, even if he let someone else make it. Just that language and wording is annoying. She's going out there & screwing around with Rod Stewart, doing an hour set of her own material. Tell her to cancel that crap & do it with Fleetwood Mac instead.

To this day, I think it is very difficult for Stevie to say no because Mick made her famous. Mama is nothing if not loyal.

That's exactly the response I had. She's going out there & screwing around with Rod Stewart, doing an hour set of her own material. Tell her to cancel that crap & do it with Fleetwood Mac instead. She can do her own songs with her own band in the first half, & then do a few big hits with Fleetwood Mac in the second half, & finally they can all close out the show with Go Your Own Way & Don't Stop.
Maybe after the Unleashed tour she told FM (read Mick) to leave her alone for 3 years. Hey it worked for Lindsey .

Great post.
Only thing is...I'm not so sure his stunt will work this time, nor should it. As much as I'd love to see the band do another album (not just a tour) I don't think Stevie should succumb to this stunt. Until I read the whole article I thought Mick was just doing the usual p.r. I could see Stevie and Lindsey fully on board when the time is right. Mick out greasing the machinery. Nothing more. Letting the whole article sink in makes me pause. I think he is definitely playing with fire here. He is coming very close to burning all his bridges in this article. He's playing the pity card to the hilt but I don't see it as the usual politicking. This comes too damn close to emotional blackmail. That sucks. It makes me lose what little respect I had for the man. He says he's not going to do what he's done in the past to make the band play on, such as begging or groveling. What does he consider this article to be? He should be ashamed of himself for bullying a woman who has always been loyal to him even after he betrayed her in the past. How can anyone not see this interview as a complete pity play of the worst kind?

I agree - but with the proviso that none of us really know what has gone on between any of these people.
There's only two ways to interpret this article: it's either a hamfisted attempt at emotional blackmail, in public, of someone who was recently bereaved (classy), or Mick is genuinely in meltdown and realising, in the wake of a third failed marriage, that he has to change (no more co-dependency on FM).

The funny thing is that the name Mick Fleetwood was very well known, and he could have used that name to launch several bands or introduce new artists. Yeah ok he has tried that but his attempts at this have always been kind of erratic though.
The Zoo was never a serious attempt at a big name band. The Visitor was never going to be mainstream enough to generate sales. The Blues Band was a great idea but stuck in the past (and died a quick death once the first album was promoted). Island Rumours Band was just far too localised and well to be honest a bit weird to be successful and finally The Mick Fleetwood Band album was good and nice and such, but not going to appeal to today's mass market. Plus when he had the chance to promote Todd Smallwood through a solo album, Tallman Records goes bust and Smallwood's album gets shelved.
What Mick needs is a modern band with perhaps a nod to music of yesterday, with some young people who can sell albums but who need the doors to be opened that the name Mick Fleetwood can open.
Mick has been relying on Fleetwood Mac for far too long, dragging it out and dusting it off whenever he needs a pay day. Fleetwood Mac, in my opinion, died in 1987-88 and it has been limping along since (and yes I do love the Time era I know but it wasn't successful).
The time has come to either bring in some new talent to Fleetwood Mac and personally I think two new young female singers who can really sing and look gorgeous too. Then Mick and John can do their thing and Lindsey can provide that link to the past. I'm sure that Lindsey would relish the opportunity provided by this and, hell, don't even call it Fleetwood Mac. Call it Buckingmac Fleet or something. Just do something new and get out there and create and play some new music.

Wow, I just heard all this on Fox & Friends this morning. Alyson is a Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks fan. I have to agree with Mick @ this point & agree with the above statement. Just how long do you promote an album. It was out last year & the same with Lindsey's. He's just touring because she is. I thought Stevie always put Fleetwood Mac first anyway. And I thought they were supposed to work on a new album together.

I agree with you about the Rod part...if Mick wants to be mad at Stevie about anything, it should be that she's embarking on the Rod Stewart cash-grab over the Fleetwood Mac cash-grab. Sure, going out with Rod is, I'm sure, way less stressful for her, and she gets to call the shots since it's essentially a solo show.
But that's not what he's complaining about. He's complaining about her wanting to promote her solo album a little more, recognizing that it's a good album which she should be proud of.

The album is not that old, and Fleetwood Mac has nothing to promote. I'm sure now that both of Stevie's parents are gone, she realizes life is short and you have to do what you want to do, and she loves this album and doesn't want to be done with it.
I think Mick should be pushing recording before touring, although that won't give him instant cash. Imagine the 6 best songs off In Your Dreams and the 6 best songs off Seeds We Sow together as one killer Fleetwood Mac album!
I'm not sure I get the dramatics either. The Unleashed tour ended in December 2009, which is really only a little over 2 years ago. The Dance, Say You Will, and Unleashed were all separated by 5-6 years. If there is no new album to support, it's not time for another Fleetwood Mac reunion tour. I think Stevie has every intention of returning to Fleetwood Mac but doesn't see why 2013 is all that late to do it.

You left out one important component for your two new young female singers. They need to be able to really sing [check], look gorgeous [ok] and WRITE.
Since you're proposing a facelift, why not toss in a couple of new young energetic male singers, as well, who can also really sing, look gorgeous and write? How about a drummer that can sing, too? Fleetwood Mac has long been using backups for everyone--a man named Steve for Mick. Can Steve sing? Can he write? Let's double up the jobs and get more music, less rumours.
Maybe add in a "Daddy" that's not so greedy and wasteful.

fleetwood mac related article in playboy is good. parts of it have been picked up by bunch of other media... people have been discussing it here and in other social media in multiple threads for days with the slow leak. stevie's solo tour is getting the publicity (how many real solo dates does she have? he's actually giving her the credit of doing her tour solo for pure reasons - meanwhile she's doing cashgrab with RS and making more than she would with FM).

Fair point. I don't keep up with LB's solo career, so yes, I could well be making a generalisation that doesn't hold up in detail. I do agree that with SWS he does seem to be finally beginning to show some signs of putting his money where his mouth is. But will YOU agree that it's been a long time coming, and that it's impossible to rule out that it's only come about now because the industry has made it the only way for an act like his to carry on?

i think he turned the corner after SYW and in the course of making UTS - so some time in 2004/05. i've been long insisting that's what song Cast Away Dreams on UTS is about (see here for some details http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showpost.php?p=1041481&postcount=5 ). he finally stopped worrying about commercial solo success and just started churning albums out and touring for the fun of it.
but now with this no advertising, no connection to FM, etc, he's going a bit too extreme, imo.

My response to your point about Lou was that he's never had the commercial success of a Fleetwood Mac and therefore it's just not an apples comparison.
I wanted to say too that good for him on the Susan Boyle thing (nothing against her). It's his art, he created it and he can do what he wants with it. That's integrity.

My spidey senses are telling me that Mrs. Fleetwood is courting the affections of someone other than her husband. Ouch. It's got to be harsh to be getting a divorce in your mid to late 60's. EDIT: i misread your post. my meaning was not OOTC, but UTS. with OOTC he was hoping for a huge commercial success, which didn't happen. by UTS time, he finally decided not to care about commercial success anymore, and put his money where his mouth is. it's working great for the fans and his eventual legacy. not so much for his checkbook i'm sure, but that's not our problem. they were all lucky to make it huge. he's using his Mac money well for financing his artsy indie solo career.

Why? It could be the massingess mass appeal album ever, but people aren't going to buy it from artists in their sixties, no matter how contemporary and commercial it sounds.
If they start writing for Taylor Swift, that would be their best shot to appealing to a widespread audience.:(

What a sh*tty thing to do to Stevie while she's most assuredly still grieving the loss of her mom. :distress:
What an understandable thing to do while he’s clearly morning the loss of the life he’s known for at least 16 years.
I’m sorry, but the “poor Stevie” routine gets old. She sh*ts all over Lindsey to the press for being an a$$hole during SYW, and then she loves him during IYD, and that’s okay. She talks about how Fleetwood Mac would scare her and was mean to her, and then she says Mick’s her best friend, and that’s okay. Mick says that Stevie’s pulling out of a lucrative tour was frustrating for him, and HE'S the a$$hole drama queen? Whatabuncha hypocritical bull*****.
WHY tour in 2010/2011? They did Unleashed in 2009, to do it again would just be a big cash grab. THEY need to make new music or dont bother.
THANK YOU!!! Really, there’s no reason they can’t be working on something new right now. They could be recording a few albums right now.
They're also both dealing with major life traumas at the moment, and that can make people reckless. I hope I'm wrong and that they sort it out, just because I don't like to think of people with so much history being estranged. That makes me sad. :o
THANK YOU!!!
How can anyone not see this interview as a complete pity play of the worst kind?
It’s no worse than some of the doozies Stevie and Lindsey have given us over the years. Hell, at times it was like reading Lindsey’s stage banter. At least Mick gave us the GD courtesy to keep it limited to a nudie magazine article and not a show people paid money to see.
Didn't he do that with Out Of The Cradle though? I think he took a pretty good financial hit on that record and tour.
And then promptly weaseled his way back into Fleetwood Mac...He sank all of that time and money into OOTC, but it only sold about what “Time” sold, and Fleetwood Mac did NOTHING to promote that album (all of their touring was done prior to the record’s release) because Mick pulled the plug on that after Lindsey asked him to play on and co-produce his next “solo” album. Yeah, Lindsey is Joni Mitchell with male genitalia

It’s still not right that she’s apparently stringing them along.
"Apparently" being the key word. Having been a fan for over 30 years (ugh I'm old), I know you sometimes have to take what Stevie says with a grain of salt, but the same is absolutely true of Mick. Was he actually promised something? Stevie announced she wanted to do another solo record before the Unleashed tour ended, she spent about a year making it, and she said very early on she wanted to promote the hell out of it because it was so special to her. I know there were rumours about Fleetwood Mac tours.....from Mick, from promoters, etc....but it's pretty easy to say "I think there will probably be a tour sometime soon" without really having laid down any plans or thought about any logistics.
I'm sorry about his divorce, but I don't know why his professional situation is suddenly such a problem. His band members have had solo careers for over 30 years, and this hiatus has just not been that long. As some have said, he could carry on the Mac without Stevie (and the threat of doing so might get her back pretty quickly) or he can bide his time with side projects until the time is right for everyone. If you're going to call your associates wanting them to help make you a few million, you have to expect to do it on their timetables.
And I'll make one more push for a new album. If Mick was interested in recording, and not just the cash cow of touring, they could get in the studio now and have Stevie join them in her down time and still have the album out by this time next year (followed by a lucrative tour). They have been doing it that way for every album starting with Mirage.

But since Stevie didn't like SYW, I think they all decided that they would not record another album that way and would try to do the next one from the ground up, if there should ever be a next one.
I say Mick go to England and try to do something with Christine. She has retired, but if someone came to her and was willing to work with her in her own space, I think she could probably be encouraged to lay down a few tracks. When you said "the threat of doing something might get her back pretty quickly" it occurred to me that nothing Mick could do would lure Stevie back faster than a one-off corroboration with the erstwhile bandmate.

I don't know how all four members working on an album "from the ground up" would solve the problems Stevie had with the last album. She apparently didn't like the way some of her songs turned out. Does that mean she wanted those songs to be a lot more like the demos she shipped from the road? Did she make her beefs known during the recording she was there for?
Maybe it was all just an argument over the inclusion of "Come," or a problem she had with the running order.
What does it even mean to work on an album from the ground up? That you write all your songs in the studio? The two writers could try that--maybe even try writing a song together--but I don't see how doing that would prevent the problems they had with Say You Will. If they have a prickly, unpleasant time working in the same room, doing the album from the ground up could even exacerbate that problem.
Musically, is there any advantage to be gained by writing & recording from the ground up? No, not when one of the members is influencing the final sound of the album fifty times as much as the other three members. That guy will still make his songs sound "out there" in comparison with the other songs.
Actually, the one musical advantage to the from the ground up method is that the tracks won't sound as if they were timestamped over the course of six or seven years. That was my main problem with Say You Will: I could literally hear four different major recording sessions spread out over six years. It sounded like a bootlegger had grabbed a bunch of unreleased stuff from the vaults, and thrown it onto a single CD-R regardless of what year it was recorded.

Actually, the one musical advantage to the from the ground up method is that the tracks won't sound as if they were timestamped over the course of six or seven years. That was my main problem with Say You Will: I could literally hear four different major recording sessions spread out over six years. It sounded like a bootlegger had grabbed a bunch of unreleased stuff from the vaults, and thrown it onto a single CD-R regardless of what year it was recorded.
hi David - looks like you went through the full circle between the beginning and the end of your post...
you know, since i don't really have much interest or investment into individual members hurt feelings (well, other than if lindsey being happy leads him to churning out bunch of great solo albums in short succession ), i just skimmed through your first few paragraphs.
as a completely lindsey-skewed person, the speculation i heard is that one reason LB cannot make SN songs better lately is that she now doesn't listen to him as she used to.:p
LB has been saying over and over that FM should get an outside producer for the next FM album, so i don't really understand why so many people keep saying that he will be the producer.
your last paragraph and the part that i bolded is - in my understanding -what people who listen to the music on the album (as opposed to listening to individual members bickering) thought was the problem with SYW - unevenness and non-cohesiveness of that album. that problem should be solved by building the album from the ground up.
of course, lindsey did that with SWS (as opposed to GOS which was more like SYW although not that extreme) - he made a cohesive album. many also say that SWS is an underproduced album. and for some songs, i personally would love if he had just left them as they were in their previously nearly completed demo form (She Smiled Sweetly). however, i enjoy listening to SWS all the way through, unlike GOS or SYW where i keep skipping songs.

In a way, once Stevie was there with the guys, she probably had more influence over the way her songs sounded on SYW than she did on any of the albums that preceded it, because Lindsey had a lot more incentive to heed her complaints in 2003 than he would have in the seventies or eighties.
Stevie was never really a ground worker anyway. I mean she complained that they would leave her alone in a room for hours and forget that she was there waiting to sing, while they worked on the music. So, it's not like she would be adding a lot, but she was definitely unhappy with SYW and if they did another album, it would be nice if she didn't start out unhappy (even if she eventually ends up there) about Lindsey butchering her demos while she was on the road listening to Do Ya Think I'm Sexy from her dresssing room every night.
But working from the ground up would mean that Stevie's vocals would not be simply strapped onto Lindsey's finished songs. He'd write songs with her back up in mind and the arrangements would evolve organically with both of them knowing that the other would have a part on his/her song.

Lindsey's said he wouldn't mind having an outside producer for the next Mac project so if Mick REALLY wants the Mac back together, with a new album and tour, then he should really only be looking in one person's direction (and it's not Stevie's direction...)
.... Dave Stewart.
That's probably the only man who can convince Stevie to do a Mac album, and after his work on In Your Dreams, he could probably produce one Hell of a Mac album. We've already seen what he can do with Stevie's material, imagine the possibilities of him working with Lindsey on Lindsey's material.

She's talked about being unhappy with the final result of her songs on 'SYW,' but I've often wondered if it was more so the end battles (their disagreements about making it a double-length album, choosing Mark Needham instead of Chris Lord-Alge, and the huge tiff over the running order) that really left the bad taste in her mouth and colored her opinion of the entire album.

Very true. With Dave's involvement, Fleetwood Mac could put out an amazing album. I'm glad that Lindsey has expressed interest in bringing in another producer. He was very impressed with what Dave did with Stevie's album, so it's a real possibility.
I appreciate Say You Will for what it is, but it has a very dark, cold feel to it. Both Stevie and Lindsey are not the most light-hearted people; and Lindsey has gotten very introspective in more recent years, and it shows in his production work. Though a bit heavy, it's all well and good. Yet, with Christine's absence, Say You Will has almost no levity. The tone of her songs provided the perfect balance.
Lindsey has certainly enjoyed working in a very insular fashion on his solo work. I hope that he finds a producer he can collaborate with in making a Fleetwood Mac record. He has expressed that it would be appealing to have someone else share the burden of production duties.

If Dave Stewart values his mental health, he won't get in a studio with Lindsey Buckingham.
If Stevie Nicks values her friendship with Dave Stewart, she won't encourage it either.

I think people are under the assumption that Dave Stewart is at home patiently waiting for Stevie to call. The man is incredibly busy and he's got so many irons in the fire:
-Joss Stone
-Weapons of Mass Entertainment
-Another new solo album
-Ghost - The Musical (which may become a legitimate Broadway phenomenon)
At this point, it seems like even if FM was ready to record a new album, they would have to wait for Dave's schedule to open up.
I don't think it's over by any stretch. Surely there are hurt feelings at the moment, but they have certainly been through worse tribulations; they will get over it. Even the Rolling Stones are eyeing a 2013 50th anniversary tour with Bill Wyman on board. And Buddah knows there was some heavy sh** that went down after Keith slammed Mick in his book. Mick just needs to feel wanted for a change, and once Stevie gets off the road later this year, she will reach out to him. For some reason, I suspect it won't take much arm-twisting to get Mick to do a Fleetwood Mac tour.

I'm sure Lindsey would love to be a "link to the past." Actually, he'd hate it and I'd venture to guess that the scenario you suggest above would go over like a lead balloon. :sorry: Lindsey is probably the most "over" FM than anyone else in the band. Why would he care about re-inventing it? As someone else pointed out, their days of re-inventing themselves with new band members are over. They're too old and it's too late in the day.

Here are some facts:
I don't especially like Lou Reed, so you can say what you like about him.
You will not find anything in any of my posts about Lou Reed that praises his work, only the hypothesis he has historically been more willing to eschew what is commercially safe and lucrative than Lindsey Buckingham has. I chose Lou because he came to mind, is all.
This is all an argument of degree, not perfection.
As for being 'edgy', I said that about LB, not Lou Reed. You're an intelligent person, Hejira. You knew that.

You are probably right to a degree. Lindsey might not want to be FM etc. However I don't think he'd necessarily be unhappy with doing something different with Mick and John and some new people, especially if it wasn't actually called Fleetwood Mac and especially if Lindsey was the main focus and made the majority of the decisions.
Despite the fact that some people think he'd not want to do it without Stevie, I think he'd jump at the chance if the right opportunity presented itself. Lindsey's biggest problem in the band and the most issues that he has had to face have been with Stevie.
The days of re-inventing themselves are never over. That is in their mind not the actual reality. Sure the name Fleetwood Mac might be old and dead but there are many artists who have been very popular until they are much older than the current members of Fleetwood Mac. Those guys can still play, they can still put on a show, and Lindsey is probably the most creative person to come out of the band since Peter Green. They just need to find the right vehicle to bring their message to the masses.
The Mick Fleetwood Blues Band almost got it right, especially when John was supposed to be there at the beginning. Now take out Rick, put in Lindsey and change the musical style to something else other than blues, and you could actually make a success of it.
Oh and I'm not suggesting that they are going to top the charts, or sell millions of albums, but a good solid fan base is already there and they could make a good solid income out of it if they made the effort.
EDIT
Oh and forgot to address the "link to the past" bit. I'm not suggesting anything other than his name can still bring in the fans, etc. You would pay to see Lindsey Buckingham because of who he is. You wouldn't pay to see Jenni Green (made up name) on her own, but you might if she was appearing with Lindsey.

Yeah, but I don't even think they're interested in doing this. Mick is whining about FM not touring because he's looking for some cash. Re-inventing themselves with new members would not allow him the payday he's looking for. Mick's not looking to expand artistically (he can do that with side projects) he's looking to expand his wallet and he knows he can't do that without some combination of Buckingham/Nicks.

Based on what Lindsey has said in recent times, his reasons for wanting to continue working with Stevie are psychological rather than musical, which undoubtedly makes him much more accommodating to her.
But working from the ground up would mean that Stevie's vocals would not be simply strapped onto Lindsey's finished songs. He'd write songs with her back up in mind and the arrangements would evolve organically with both of them knowing that the other would have a part on his/her song.
I'm not so sure this is a given. It's possible, but is it necessarily likely?
I also want to touch on the "outside producer" idea that band members and fans bring up. One of you guys posted a print interview recently in which Lindsey clarified what I've been saying: an outside producer wouldn't necessarily be someone who orchestrates the tracks. Lindsey doesn't intend to come into the studio, lay down his guitar & vocal tracks on command, and then go home, while someone else does all the painstaking track work (including mixing). That will never happen. So the outside producer won't prevent the musical disagreements between Stevie and Lindsey.
The producer would be there mainly to serve as a go-between: as the guy who keeps meetings on track, who keeps budgets on track, who keeps schedules on track, and who oversees business decisions. He's not going to tell Lindsey what sort of effects to put on Stevie's vocal. Lindsey is going to continue to flange or phase her lead vocal, which will in turn lead to the same fights we've seen in every previous decade.

Well, maybe not. Obviously, Lindsey is not going to let an outside producer shape, drastically change or walk all over his tracks, but perhaps when it comes to Stevie's he'll just take a step backwards to avoid friction. He wouldn't have done it in 1987 (if the threatened outside producers had ever actually come aboard), but maybe he'll do it now, to keep the peace. If her stuff winds up sounding unlayered and inconsistent, he'll just have a nice chuckle. He'll still have input when it comes to his vocals, but I don't think Lindsey's vocals on her songs were ever what annoyed Stevie anyway. She has no problem with his background vocal arrangements.

[Nothing we don't know, but sums up everything nicely]
http://www.presstelegram.com/ci_20223313/steve-smith-classic-rock-pop-and-country
IS FLEETWOOD MAC DONE? Mick Fleetwood, the 64-year-old drummer who founded Fleetwood Mac in London in 1967 with bassist John McVee and guitarists Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer, tells Playboy, "I don't believe Fleetwood Mac will ever tour again, but I really hope we do."
Fleetwood says Mac was ready to tour in 2010, but didn't. Then the band delayed touring in 2011 and once more in 2012 because of members' solo projects. First, singer guitarist Lindsay Buckingham released a solo album, "Seeds We Sow" and toured behind it. That was followed by singer Stevie Nicks' solo album, "In Your Dreams," and tour.
Tours of this magnitude take months to prepare. While Nicks is currently off the road, she's made plans for three solo shows in New England from June 29-July 10 before hitting the road with Rod Stewart from July 20 through Aug. 9, as she did last summer. There goes the lucrative summer concert season.
So, in the meantime, Buckingham decided to play several southern California solo shows. He'll be at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, north of San Diego, on May 3; at the Wiltern in Los Angeles on May 4; back down the 5 to the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on May 5; and up to the Thousand Oaks Performing Arts Center on May 6.
"I've always been supportive of my band doing solo albums, so long as we kept our band together," says Fleetwood.
One concert promoter tells Playboy that an eight month tour would net each band member $10 million.
Fleetwood expressed his frustration at having to pass on the big money. "It is certainly a blow to all of us financially." He's putting the band's future all on Nicks. "It all comes down to her, and for the first time, I think even Lindsey has lost his patience."
Fleetwood understands Nick's thinking, to a point. "Stevie is really proud of her new album and I get that, but she will not let it go...she's insistent upon working it until it's incapable of growing further. She has become enthralled and obsessed with her album in a very nice but very inconvenient way. She's working 20 times harder than she would ever have to do with Fleetwood Mac and not making anything close to as much money as she would with us. But this is what she wants to do, and I respect that."

She's working 20 times harder than she would ever have to with Fleetwood Mac and not making anything close to as much money as she would with us.
That statement is frustrating on a number of levels. First of all, I'm tired of all the $$$$$$$ drama.
I know everyone loves money, but dang. Is everything ALWAYS about money?
Stevie's cashing in with Rod, sure. But at least she is seemingly trying to stick with her most recent project and has SOME sort of creative incentive behind it all, beyond just needing some cash.
But this is what she wants to do, and I respect that.
And if you respected her decision, you wouldn't be airing this out in the public.

I keep seeing references to a 2010 tour. That was never the plan, was it? Unleashed ran to Christmas 2009. I think they had reached saturation levels at that point.
The $10 million per band member isn't right either, is it? For a long time, I assumed there was an equal split among members, but don't we now know that Stevie will make close to 3 times what Mick does from a Mac tour?
I also like the quote about working 20x harder than she has to, as if working hard is a bad thing. Also, I don't even think it's true. The pace and schedule of a Fleetwood Mac tour always seems grueling to me and often seems to take a toll on Stevie. I think her solo tours are a lot easier for her.
Finally, can some kind Ledgie PM me with instructions on how to do multiple quotes in a single post because yes, I am that dumb. :wavey:

They had plans to do a stadium tour with The Eagles in the Spring of 2010; perhaps that was what Mick was referring to. I seem to recall that the idea was, er, nixed because Stevie didn't like the thought of performing in broad daylight.
