View Full Version : Stevie, Lindsey or Christine?

who is your favorite Rumours-era singer/songwriter?

i may be wrong, but i have a feeling that most people on these boards have a clear preference for one or the other singer/songwriter, so this will be a very easy decision.

for people who are purely FM fans and love them all together and equally, or 2 of them equally (BN fans?), i understand this may be really hard, but please try to still pick just one...

from reading various forums here, my estimate would be there are maybe 5-10 Christine fans, ~20 Lindsey fans, and probably way more than 30-40 Stevie fans that are active at least occasionally... but i might be completely off.

thanks to both of you for playing! :)

i was looking at the numbers of people voting in MSB's polls here, people voting in the SN forum poll about what her next step will be (~80 i think?), plus comparing 49 people voting on lindsey's tusk songs so far, vs the maximum number of people voting in any recently created poll in lindsey forum (41)... and was just curious. so figure i should ask!

Do you even have to ask me???? It's Lindsey. I remember seeing the Dance and at first not being that impressed. But when Lindsey kicked into ISA, that was it. I just clicked with him. I gradually came to appreciate the entire band.....but the catalyst was always Lindsey. He was always nice to look at too.

All three have had their ups and downs, Christine without a doubt being the most consistent, but not always the most interesting. Lindsey, is just pure, raw talent and the band's main artistic presence. Stevie, though gets my vote simply for being so unique, the largest (vastly untapped) material catalogue and when her voice was hot, she couldn't be beat. She has also proven to be the most sustainable although inconsistent, presence.

I like all three of them for various reasons -- that's why Fleetwood Mac is so unique and appealing.

I didn't officially vote. These polls are becoming rather superfluous, aren't they? It's evident in the extremely low voting numbers. People are getting tired of them because of the overload.

I prefer to have a dialogue - it's more productive and less mindless.
Word to the poll-addictive posters: just say no!

Someone should make a poll listing all the active Ledgies and the rest of us could guess next to their name which singer they like the best. It would be based on how well we know each other's tastes. For example, before I even looked at the results I knew Butter Cookie was gonna vote for Christine.

Love all three together.. but I miss and love Christine..

Agree 100%. In terms of songwriters-singers, that's the reason I love Fleetwood Mac.
There are times I love to listen Stevie songs, then there are Lindsey periods, or Christine months.. but actually it's the combination that I love. That's why my favorite band is not a one singer band.

And yes I miss Christine, Fleetwood Mac is not the same without her.

interesting opinion. while i personally may agree with your dialogue preference, polls provide some insights (and numbers!) dialogue doesn't necessarily. also in many instances a poll serves as a dialogue starter - as it has already here. however some people do not feel the need to express their opinions in a dialogue form, for whatever reason, but still like to vote in polls. it's nice to have their opinions captured too.

that's a good point, and i can tell you right now that even though penguinhead and villavic chose not to vote in the poll if they absolutely had to choose their votes would go for SN and CM, respectively (imo ). and i don't think anybody can doubt who is my or yours favorite. but there are many members who are not as loud as us; why not hear them in the form of poll then?

I think it's interesting how many Stevie fans feel the need to acknowledge a perceived lack of technical skill: "She's my favorite, but obviously the weakest link," "I love her, but she's wildly inconsistent." It reminds my of the favorite songwriters thread a few months ago, when Stevie was almost never mentioned without a caveat.

Chiffonheads may be the loudest and most active group here, but we're also strangely skeptical of our queen. No need to be ashamed of Stevie's place in our wild hearts! Consider her material within Fleetwood Mac 1975-83, and try to tell me she's a weak link.

Personally, I'm like 50% Stevie, 40% Chris, 10% Lindsey.

I completely relate and agree with you on this. The Mac is my favorite all time band. I also like all three of them in their solo endevers. I also am proud to say that Ms. Nicks is my musical obsession. I am completely inspired by her poetry and songwriting. I love her passionate stage:thumbsup: performances both now and in her hayday. Objectively, I think they're all wonderful songwriters. It just comes down to personal taste. Nothing wrong with having favorites! And while I tend not to connect with Lindsey's material within the Mac so much as I do with Stevie's and Christine's, he blew me away live. When considering purely Fleetwood Mac songs, Christine knocks it out of the park as my favorite. But the combination of Stevie's solo and Mac career makes up my favorite artist of all time, and that will never change. I'm NOT ashamed to say that Stevie's my favorite. I might slighty prefer Lindsey's solo work in terms of quality, as a whole, but, you know, Bella Donna (+ In your Dreams) > All of Lindsey's albums to me. I'm not familiar with Christine's solo work but i really have to give it a try. Oddly, i always prefered Christine with other configurations of Fleetwood Mac than with the Rumours era members.

Because I don't have to like the music to appreciate her talent. And Silver Springs, just because it's my favourite Fleetwood Mac song, doesn't quite propel Stevie into the heights enough for me to put her in second place. Because there's too many of her songs that make me cringe lyrically. Christine's make me cringe because of the slushy music, but the lyrics I can enjoy.

I actually understood your point here. Some Stevie's lyrics make me cringe too. But, since we're voting for our favorite, i choosed what i personally like over what i objectively know is excellent.
I know Lindsey's the best (since he somehow manages to amaze and touch me at the same time), but Stevie just touches me more, and that's why i love her more. I get that you both appreciate objectively Lindsey's music, and also just love him, but you very cerebraly judge your second favorite...which is not bad, since Stevie's or Chris' music don't touch you thaaaat much. Anyway i get you but i wanted to underline the different points of view of what "favorite" might or might not be. :)

Regarding my favorite? That's kinda complex. Christine is probably the highest quality of the group, and Lindsey is probably the most talented in the technical sense. Stevie is without a doubt the weakest link, the most erratic & irregular, yet she'll always be my emotional fav of the lot.

For someone who claims that Stevie is his favorite, you sure do have a lot of criticisms about her, and rather consistently. Chris is the "highest quality" of the group? What does that mean, exactly? Also, I don't see how Stevie is a weak link. She's definitely the most successful and popular in the band (for example, she's winning this poll) and yes, success is relative, but she has to be doing something right to have garnered such a strong and faithful fanbase for all these years. I also think she's a very strong link in the band, as a songwriter, singer and frontwoman. I think Stevie, Lindsey and Chris are all strong links in the band and contribute greatly in their own ways. Without them, FM would be remembered in history as that great British Blues band from the 60's.

Also, what do you mean by "emotional fave?" Does that mean you mostly just like her and not her music? I don't get it.

I always considered a true fandom to be not only an acceptance of the positive aspects, but a complete understanding of the flaws too. Otherwise you're not seeing the full picture. Just a delusion you've created for yourself because you refuse to believe that your "idol" is fallible.

Yeah, I agree. Trust me, I'm not one of those fans that thinks she can do no wrong and I don't agree with everything she puts out, says or does. What I'm referring to is consistently criticizing an artist that is supposedly a favorite. That doesn't make sense to me.

Stevie is definitely my favorite- that powerful voice will never be replicated. I like all of the nuances of her singing- it's not considered the "perfect" voice necessarily, but that is why it's beautiful and moving. Stevie's lyrics, expecially those prior to Tango, are extremely creative. I also admire that she is not really a musician, but she is still able to write on piano and get her ideas across to the band. I love her solo work, obviously- especially Bella Donna, The Wild Heart, and Rock a Little.

My second choice is a tough one, but I have to go with Lindsey because of his virtuosity on guitar and his production skills. His voice has a hard exterior, but is actually very moving in combination with the lyrics and instrumentation of his songs. To me, Tusk is pure perfection for Lindsey- all of his songs are so inventive and honest. I hear something new almost every time I listen to that album. I saw Lindsey live last fall, and I was blown away. His voice may have aged a bit, but his guitar makes up for it. I haven't been a fan of much of his solo work, however I did enjoy OOTC, Gift of Screws, and Seeds We Sow.

Christine is third, but I have a great appreciation for her experience, musicianship, and vocal style. I really love her voice- the sweetness of her voice and lyrics come across as ironic sometimes, as she seems to have a great sense of humor and was "one of the guys" in Fleetwood Mac before Stevie came along. I really like her earlier blues work (Christine Perfect, but I was disappointed by Christine McVie- it was a nice listen, but a little repetitive. In the Meantime was beautiful, I wish she'd come back to the Mac.

Can't choose one over the other. I like all of their work for different reasons.Stevie's my favorite of the three, but I can't even watch a whole YouTube performance from recent years--I click it off.

I approach all three the way the Catholics characterize the doctrine of the trinity: Stevie, Lindsey, and Christine are distinct yet coexist in unity, and are co-equal, co-eternal, and consubstantial. The three are of one being.

Interesting comparison!

I went with Stevie. She's still the one who can pull off a lyric that will touch me the most emotionally and make an "ok" song suddenly become grand to me. Also, I think she still is an excellent harmony singer and is the most naturally gifted at harmonies.

I prefer her younger voice too, of course. But, that goes for all of them!

Hehehehe.

I was an LB fan first and then found FM. He's always been the one that touched me the most (that's what she said! LOL) and made me cry when I heard his music.

Stevie's music doesn't affect me the same way, for the most part sans a select few songs. I enjoy her stuff, but overall, I just enjoy listening to it. I don't really feel it all that much.

Danny Kirwan is officially my third favorite member of the band but he's not on this list. I've always seen Danny as a mixture of Lindsey and Stevie in that he had the amazing guitar work in his music, but also very mysterious lyrics and an etheral voice.

Christine would be fourth. :)

Whether posted in levity or not, I do follow this as my own personal creed. And my efforts to maintain balance between parallel entities never cease.

I would say that, along with the trinity, I do think that the Virgin Mary holds a place in the band.

I'm finally here! Been crazy busy yesterday.

I come on today to see elle has posted a poll on the Rumous forum, making me pick between Christine and Stevie, how dare you elle! :xoxo:

First and foremost, I am a Fleetwood Mac fan. Christine, Stevie, and Lindsey are members of that group. For me their solo stuff is just extra and completely separate.

One of the things I do at home on my computer is make up playlists of Fleetwood Mac's songs. I give the list of theme of some sort, but I always limit my playlist to a CD's worth. Most of the time, it comes down to this arrangement

7 Christine
7 Stevie
3 or so everybody else

...so I'm terribly split between the two girls.

I do listen and enjoy their solo songs/performances, but always miss the other's singing and playing and Mick and John's excellent rhythm section.

Recently, I watched Stevie's solo performance on youtube of the Bill Clinton foundation event. She did Landslide, Dreams, and Don't Stop. Don't Stop is not the same without Fleetwood Mac.

I've noticed too here on the Ledge that the entity of Fleetwood Mac has almost disappeared, while the individual members (Pre and post rumours included) are alive and vibrant and talked about more on an individual basis. I now that Fleetwood Mac haven't had an album out since 2003 and haven't toured since 2009, and Stevie/Lindsey have been active, solo, over the past decade. So that probably plays into the matter greatly.

This comes across to how people refer to Fleetwood Mac songs. Go Your Own Way is always "Lindsey Buckingham". Gold Dust Woman is known as Stevie's Gold Dust Woman. I get upset when Fleetwood Mac songs are referred to as songs by the individual members. Yes, I know he or she wrote the lyrics, melody, etc, but still they are Fleetwood Mac songs.

I think too the lines get blurred with Lindsey/Stevie doing so many FM songs are their solo tours and vice versa.

Well they would be over here.

Not necessarily. I was introduced to FM pre- Stevie and Lindsey BECAUSE of Stevie and Lindsey. Without the Rumours lineup I never would have had the inclanation to seek out those older albums. I'm sure glad I did though because many of those pre-1975 sogs are among my lifetime's favorites. Bee, would you have known any of those songs before you heard Lindsey's music?

I was referring to over here as in Britian, Viv. Lindsey wasn't my "gateway" into Fleetwood Mac. I heard a Stevie song (Landslide) but thought nothing of it. Songs like Rattlesnake Shake, Old Grey Mare and Shake Your Moneymaker got me to pay attention to the older band. They're the first Fleetwood Mac songs I heard. A chance hearing of another Stevie song (Edge Of Seventeen) got me to listen to Stevie again and eventually Fleetwood Mac. Lindsey was my final discovery. Ask any Fleetwood Mac fan in britain, and 9 times out of 10 they're going to mention the old school songs before Lindsey and Stevie era.

I've seen Lindsey on ALL of his solo tours and always enjoyed his live shows because they were so upbeat but the show that I saw in Phoenix last Roctober bored me to tears. A total waste of $50.00.

Haha really? Do you not like his SWS material? I never saw any of his earlier solo tours though, so maybe they were more entertaining.

This is the first time I never bought his solo album. There was only one song in his show to my knowledge he performed from SWS and it sounded just like a lot of his past weird sounding stuff. I was not impressed.

It isn't correct in English in this context, right ? I don't know, i'm French and doing my best to communicate here :D

So did I. Thus why I voted for Lindsey.... Was only giving my opinion

Yep i get why you choose Lindsey but am not quite sure for the other two...anyway didn't mean to offend you and am respecting your opinion

But, that goes for all of them!

sorry to make you agonize over your decision... and thanks for voting!:wavey:

re voices, i can't really say for others, but i definitely prefer lindsey's voice now over his young voice during BN/FM/Rumours time. he had the range, but not the fullness that he has now.

For someone who claims that Stevie is his favorite, you sure do have a lot of criticisms about her, and rather consistently.

I've had to explain this many times over the years. I think because Stevie is capable of such amazing singing, songwriting, and performing, I am disappointed when she doesn't live up to her full potential. Stevie's what drew me into Fleetwood Mac, and she's the one who has kept my interest for 20 years now. I'm an unabashed fanboy for her, even though her output has been quite jagged and erratic over the decades. :)

Chris is the "highest quality" of the group? What does that mean, exactly?

Christine's material, when viewed on a song by song basis against the other songwriters of the band, is the highest quality in my book. She has very, very few clunkers. Her songwriting is consistently good, her voice is consistently great (seems to get better with age, if anything), and her live performances throughout the years also are pretty consistent & good. Contrast this with Stevie, for instance, who is highly variable. Her voice is every changing; she can write really amazing songs which blow all the other songwriters in the band outta the water, but she can also write some pretty horrific clunkers; Stevie can either be a consummate performer live, or she can totally phone in her performances. She's just not terribly consistent with the quality of her product. :)

I answered most of this in the above couple quotes. Stevie absolutely transformed the band from a somewhat esoteric footnote in music to being one of the biggest bands in rock history. Stevie IS Fleetwood Mac.

Also, what do you mean by "emotional fave?" Does that mean you mostly just like her and not her music? I don't get it.

This means that Stevie is my favorite, even though she is highly flawed. To me, she way more than equals the sum of her parts. Christine & Lindsey may have more going for them in various ways (Christine has all the radio hits, Lindsey has all the musical talent & was responsible for much of the signature Fleetwood Mac sound, etc), but Stevie remains my fav nonetheless.

I'm sorry my posts clearly annoy you. I adore Stevie thoroughly, but I also don't kid myself about her weaknesses, and am fascinated/perplexed by her shortcomings just as much as my unrelenting love for her. Hopefully this answers some of your questions? :)

I adore Christine. I really do. I agree with everything you said. You know Christine is going to deliver a solid song, performance, whatever. You know when you hear one of her songs, your toe will tap and you'll probably be able to sing along with the chorus after one listen. To me, she's as great as anyone who is not Stevie could be.

For me, Stevie just has the WOW moments that no one else does. Whether it's a vocal or a composition, Stevie can blow me away like no other. And those wow moments are spread all throughout her career, even in eras when there were more lows than highs. Even if she's not always consistent, for me that's a perfectly fair trade for her most brilliant efforts. On a scale of 1-10, Christine's worst is probably a 7, but her best is probably an 8. With Stevie the range is wider, but when she gives us a 10, all is right in the world.

from reading various forums here, my estimate would be there are maybe 5-10 Christine fans, ~20 Lindsey fans, and probably way more than 30-40 Stevie fans that are active at least occasionally... but i might be completely off.

seems my prediction may have been way off:laugh: - results so far:

Christine McVie 9
Lindsey Buckingham 13
Stevie Nicks 29

so Christine might have more than 10 fans here, while Lindsey is not even close to 20 yet and there may be only 4-5 more people i could think of as LB fans here. must be that we are just really loud!

My choice wouldn't surprise many. I voted for Lindsey. When I knew generally about Fleetwood Mac, my feelings on each member were very different. I thought for sure Stevie was the dynamite and the others were insignificant. This is what I gathered from magazine articles and VH1. It was just that angle that FM press was spun at. Not to say that she wasn't, from the very moment, a STAR in every way...but it's far more complicated than that.

I finally became an FM fan through seeing Lindsey Buckingham perform live. All the others paled in comparison when I saw him. His fire, his passion, his beautiful emotional intensity. And the way he played that guitar like there was no tomorrow. Lindsey is such an incredible artist. He isn't the star of FM, obviously, and he did not have Stevie's lyrical prowess, but he did more tha anyone to create that sound that has made this band so timeless. His fingerprints are on all of it. And he was also responsible for writing and performing songs that have such an emotional resonance. Perhaps not extremely verbose or containing that poetic imagery that Stevie did so wonderfully, but the way he could deliver all the passion and emotion is just as effective.

And then of course...he came up with Tusk. He forged ahead with that album, although for sure the band would have preferred a more commercial/Rumours-like outing. I love his vision and intensity. I love his musicianship. His quirkiness. His genius.

I'm a total LB girl all the way. I adore Christine for her obvious gifts as a pop songwriter and she is AMAZING. Stevie has a unique delivery and her lyrics have been some of my all-time favorites. But when it comes down to what gives me that fire in FM and makes me stay a fan and not just a casual admirer...Lindsey Buckingham, THANK YOU because your music and talent is simply astonishing.

I voted for Christine. Even though I overall enjoy Stevie slightly more, I voted just considering their Mac material, not considering their solo material. Plus Christine is gonna need help to mount support against the Lindsey and Stevie diehards. The truth is that all three are fantastic singers, songwriters, and performers, and polls such as these usally devolve into petty arguements in which people lose sight of what a forum such as this is about- coming together in mutual admiration of one of our favorite artists: Fleetwood Mac. These polls, while they can be fun, can at times tear people apart (a bit overdramatic, I know, but you get what I mean haha).

I think too the lines get blurred with Lindsey/Stevie doing so many FM songs are their solo tours and vice versa.

hmm, what do you want them to do?! those are their songs! just like oh well or man of the world are peter green's songs. otherwise you'd have a situation like CCR suing fogerty and he was not allowed to perform his own songs. i guess mick can become desperate and try to do that to lindsey and stevie, but i'm pretty sure they own most of the rights to songs they wrote.

I made myself a playlist of my favorite Christine and Stevie's, Fleetwood Mac songs.

Christine - 11 songs
Stevie - 6 songs

He isn't the star of FM, obviously, and he did not have Stevie's lyrical prowess

For me, Lindsey is a terrific lyricist. I don't think he became poetic until Tusk and then, obviously, SYW began taking that to a whole other level entirely. But even early on, although his words didn't evoke the flights of fancy and dreamy imagination that Stevie's did, their simplicity allowed him to tie them to the emotion of a song and accentuate his tortured vocal, so splendidly.

To me, because ISA's words are so sparse, it feels more like someone who is slipping and falling into despair. And of course, Go Insane is the quintessential example of this. I mean, there are no words that can express what "she's a lot like you" means more than those 5 do, not the way he screams them. Suddenly, you see there's another woman in the relationship and she came out of nowhere, born in that simple sentence. She haunts him. She haunts them. I think the way Lindsey inserts her is magical and the way he delivers the line, tells us all we need to know about his losing battle to escape.

Those things blow me away, as do basic statements like "Fate takes time."

I never thought his lyrics lacked -- well, except for those horrible Family Man type lapses.

So about 1/3 of his tour is FM songs. Stevie does about 4 songs - Rhiannon, Landslide, Dreams, and Gold Dust Woman. She typically has a shorter setlist and does about 2-3 cover songs.

Interesting though they both ignore the Post-Mirage songs and concentrate on the white album and Rumours album songs.

A true solo-tour sounds awesome, kinda like a 1-man show.

Also I'd like to add that generally, I'm not a guitar guy. I tend to gravitate to the vocals, drums, and then the keyboards. FM tend to emphasize vocals and rhythm quite well. A lot of their songs actually are "guitar lite".

.Interesting though they both ignore the Post-Mirage songs and concentrate on the white album and Rumours album songs.

it is a 1-man show!

Big Love is from Tango, so post-mirage.

he does both Big Love and Never Going Back Again completely alone anyway - whether with mac or solo. and you can easily argue that acoustic Big Love is a completely different song that he reworked and first started doing acoustically on his 1992/93 solo tour, when he was on a 10-year hiatus from the mac.

NGBA, SHN and GYOW - from Rumours
Big Love - from Tango
Tusk - from Tusk
ISA - from FM

so he did 3 songs from Rumours, and 1 each from FM, Tusk and Tango. but he ignored Mirage and SYW, on the last tour at least.

of course, you can easily argue that most of LB's Tusk and SYW songs are solo songs anyway - since he recorded them either on his own away from the band, or as a solo album in the first place.

I apologize if this seems rude, but I've got to disagree with you a little bit on Go Insane. Not that your featured line isn't an example of LB's great gift as a lyricist. It is!!!:xoxo: Just for a different reason. I don't think the line you mentioned has anything to do with injecting another woman into a relationship. If you've seen the great video of the original single for GI, that song is all about Lindsey doing self analysis. "She's a lot like you" means "she" is a lot like Lindsey. The back and forth begins with "two kinds of people in this world...winners...losers..." he's talking about himself in both roles. He is also talking about himself when he compares the woman in the song to himself. The winners/losers line applies to her, too. Nothing within the song itself indicates a third party comparison, as far as I can tell. I'm not sure why everyone thinks so, but that's just my take. No biggie. :xoxo:

one can, sure! but when i listen to FM songs i find myself skipping over most of SN or CM songs.Well, that's you, elle, but that's not me. The foundation of my fanaticism for this band is the orchestration of the tracks, and Lindsey happens to be the individual most responsible for those decisions (in several cases, he's also the individual most responsible for the execution of the orchestrative ideas). By orchestration, I mean the common definition: the "layout" of the sounds on a song or an album. That includes decisions about parts (the notes and chords played, which is also called arrangement), instrumentation (the combination of instruments used to generate the intended color), the vocal score, and the mix (applying dynamics and effects to what's on tape in order to create a specific atmosphere).

All this stuff is just as important to the Nicks and McVie tracks as it is to the Buckingham tracks--hence many people's interest in it. In fact, Lindsey himself has said--and I think I agree--that his best work of this sort has been on their songs, not necessarily his own.

But of course I don't know for certain what turns you on about Lindsey.

beautiful post David - well most of the stuff about orchestration, although why do feel a lot of criticism towards what i may like screaming from the part that i bolded :shrug:?! are you saying LB puts no guitar, production or arrangement effort in his solo stuff?

i of course don't have nearly the extensive musical knowledge or appreciation that you do (i more/less coasted through music school playing flute and quit when i actually had to put some work and practice into it!:p) but i enjoy reading your dissections. and i just listen to what i like.

when i first started listening to lindsey's stuff, i was confused how all over the spectrum his music is. my preference and what drew me in was his more rocking stuff, and of course perfect tight little pop songs like SHN. but once i heard the acoustic BL and GI that sealed it for me.

although i love his guitar parts on Mac songs from other singer/songwriters, especially melodic ones on many of stevie's songs (i listen to a drivel like that SYW song just for that simple but melodic guitar part in the middle, and also stand through stevie's nasal singing of DR for that guitar outro - but can't stand gypsy - sorry LB, i know you are proud of it:wavey:). i also love his harmonies especially with christine and the ones he pulled with stevie on the recent tour versions of beautiful child and storms, but to me this is still not enough to entice me to want to listen to their songs as much as his (with the exception of a song like hold me maybe!). there are many other singer/songwriters that would be on my list in between LB and the rest of the Mac members.:sorry: (just to clarify, i'm talking rumours-era mac members.)

see what you started, now i'll hear it from people how i'm being mean again!

EDIT: just want to add, i respect and can appreciate your preference for the whole mac as a sum of the parts vs the individual members, and complete rounded songs. like you said though, that's you, not me. and that's why this is so interesting, we are all drawn towards and love different things and it's nice to hear different opinions and points of view! great discussion!:wavey:

I'd conclude that you don't have much interest in Buckingham as an arranger, orchestrator, vocal harmonizer, or guitarist, because all this stuff plays such a major role in Mac albums from 1977 to now.

I agree. You know, I love Jimmy Stewart, but except for Destry Rides Again (in which I think he was unusually sexy), I have not seen ANY of his westerns. I don't like westerns. I don't watch them. And I'm happy with that, but I realize that it gives me limited insight into Jimmy Stewart. And I always say with, Cary Grant, for instance, "If I didn't know how cold he was in Notorious, then I could never appreciate his wackiness as much as I do in Holiday."

Knowing the full panopoly and range gives me so much more to appreciate. Studying the differences between Cary with Dunne and Cary with Hepburn gives me such insight. The contrasts add so much depth to my understanding of his talent. And I don't have that with Jimmy Stewart. Cuz I don't like westerns.:(

No biggie. :xoxo:

wow, it never ever in a million years occurred to me to think of that line in this way!!?!! really interesting interpretation, and thinking of lindsey's love for double meanings (and his self-centeredness ), seems to make a lot of sense.

I know what you mean. I think the video for Holiday Road says a lot about Lindsey as well, in keeping with his musical themes. I think the Holiday Road video would go great with his Gift of Screws songs, in fact. However, I don't think it has a lot to do with the song Holiday Road and I guess that's how I feel about Go Insane and its video.

Although I don't disagree that "she's a lot like you" can also mean "she's a lot like me," because I think that unseen "she" and Lindsey are a lot alike. I don't see that as the only meaning. I can't take the line about screaming "your" name as being a self-reference at all.

I'll tell you what this song's neat trick reminds me of, an X-Files called "Little Green Men." The X-Files team has been broken up and Scully is reassigned to Quantico. She tries to maintain a relationship with Mulder, but when they meet in a park he is distant and cool. It's like if they aren't working together, they aren't friends. He runs off to Mexico searching for aliens alone. It looks like he has totally moved on from their work together. While in Mexico, he documents his findings on a tape recorder.

Well, it's not until the end of the show when he's dictating into the recorder that we find out the tape he is making is for Scully, so that she can investigate his findings if he goes missing. They aren't working together any more, but in his mind they ARE still partners. It was like she wasn't there, wasn't a part of him anymore, wasn't on his mind, and then we see she always was. And that's what Go Insane is like to me. This woman coming out of the sub-conscious into the forefront, in an all primeval pain sort of way.

And in the last scene in the X-Files when Mulder meets with Scully again, all of his evidence of aliens and conspiracies has been destroyed. He doesn't have it. He doesn't have the X-Files, but he says offhandedly to the room, more than to Scully, "I've still got you." Sigh.

I saw your post to David.

that's good.

this whole conversation got me thinking - if you take out the instrumentation, the guitar, and the arrangement, what are you left with for LB's material? the melodies, hooks, lyrics, his voice, lots of raw emotion?!

so to dissect some of that - he certainly can write a great hook, put together and perform some mind-blowing guitar parts (oh but i forget, apparently i wouldn't know that if not listening to SN and CM mac songs :D), some gorgeous verses, some tight arrangements.

the raw emotion he pours into his songs and performances is unbelievable and at times downright scary.

his voice is definitely not my favorite part of LB's music, although as i already said in this thread i do like it much better now than when he was young. but my preference for male voices are more "broken-sounding" voices (like RS), or large range voices (like Bono, or Freddie Mercury), or really deep voices - like Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, and most of all Shane McGowan - they can read the phonebook to me whenever they want! and Shane has that deep emotion too... just born to sing.

but i have stated a lot more about what i love about LBs music elsewhere, most recently in ongoing polls dissecting his songs by a topic in LB's forum. would love to see you adding and sharing some of your opinions there David!:wavey:

The contrasts add so much depth to my understanding of his talent. And I don't have that with Jimmy Stewart. Cuz I don't like westerns.:(And my entire post was a response to this comment:

but when i listen to FM songs i find myself skipping over most of SN or CM songs. the only studio FM albums i own are Tusk and SYW. other than hits, i barely know other Mirage and TITN songs and when there was a poll comparing 2 albums i had to go on youtube to listen to songs so i can make more-less informed decision.

The comment didn't upset me or confuse me or elicit any particular emotional reaction. It just made me apply some inductive reasoning. Elle said to draw your own conclusions, so I concluded that she wasn't interested in LB's guitar or backup singing because all the stuff she skips is of course filled with his guitar & backup singing. Yes, she listens to his songs on the Mac albums, but by process of elimination I figured she is drawn to them because of the songwriting or the lead vocal--in other words, whatever qualities those have that are absent on the Nicks & McVie tracks (since she skips those).

My conclusion might be based on a fallacy IF it's Stevie's and Christine's lead singing and songwriting that puts off elle. This is quite common--at least in my world. If I don't want to hear a particularly stupid lyric by Stevie, I may neglect a track with a really cool bass part by John that I'd otherwise want to hear over and over again.

So cancel everything.

EDIT: to clarify - it is not Christine's singing that puts me off - i think her singing is beautiful, but her songwriting is in most cases too breezy poppy for my taste. but it definitely is some of Stevie's lyrics (yeah particularly stupid parts do come to mind lol), no real or different melodies in many of her songs, and her nasal voice - which is not always nasal, sometimes her voice does sound gorgeously interesting - "tell me lies" bit comes to mind, and i actually like broken-sounding voices as i said above, but Marianne Faithfull or Amy Winehouse type of female voice would be more my taste.

This is a common sentiment, and it probably used to be true, but I'm not so sure anymore. I really think Stevie would have come off better on Say You Will if they had used an outside producer. I think the last big favor LB did for SN was "Gypsy."

Maybe. But I don't think anybody could have saved Silver Girl, outside producer or not. Lyrically it was just appalling, Stevie's voice wasn't at its best and the music did little to "brush over" that fact.

Honestly, this. And frankly, Stevie's SYW songs weren't all that fabulous to begin with either. I think Lindsey did the best he could do. We will never know whether an outside producer would have made them "better" unless she takes all her original tracks and decides to release an album with all those songs done by a different producer.

I became a FM fan mainly from that period, but I was really mostly impressed with Lindsey's songs on that album. They were stellar. Some of Stevie's were good to me, but on a whole I think quite forgettable.

thanks, please do! whether you like or dislike the song that you know. we are trying to group his songs around topics, mostly to create some discussion and also not to poll by the overused by-the-album way. however lyrics are not the focus of those discussions - any and every aspect of the song is, so from reading some of your posts in the past i think you'd have tons of different and interesting insight to add.

Well, I don't like the Gypsy video. That might be blasphemous as well.

As for the song, maybe Lindsey should do it on his upcoming tour. I know he had the 3 guitars for AHI, but let's see how one sounds on the song. When he introduced the tune, he could tell his version of the mattress on the floor story that Stevie gave us so often on the Unleashed tour.

I will say that I am a little miffed with the song right now. Last June, I went into this room to sign a contract and the tail end of Gypsy -- the guitar solo -- was playing through the speakers as I entered. I was sure that this was a good omen. That it meant it was the right decision for me. Now, just 9 months later, that agreement went down the drain and rather acrimoniously. I feel that I was misled by FM and Gypsy both!

Nah. That's not nearly as blasphemous. I would like the video better without Stevie dancing in the leg warmers in "present day". I could deal with sticking to one era and since I love anything retro, the black and white scenes win out for me.

Christine's material, when viewed on a song by song basis against the other songwriters of the band, is the highest quality in my book.

I guess I don't really rate my favorite artists in terms of "quality." Quality is an adjective I save for things like toilet paper and car upholstery. As far as musicians are concerned, however, I know what excites me and makes me swoon as a fan. I know what art moves and compels me. Chris has never done that for me. I like some of her stuff, in fact, I LOVE her stuff on Tusk, but for the most part I think she's rather flat and boring compared to the other two songwriters in the band. Stevie and Lindsay may be erratic in their highs and lows as songwriters and performers, but at least they are interesting and keep you on the edge of your seat. In fact, I guess that's why I love them so much. And you're right, when Stevie's hot she's hot, when she hits a slump, well, I still love her. I would much rather listen to Stevie's weakest solo stuff over anything Chris has done solo, but that's my preference. And I won't apologize for it! :D

yes, that was one of the points of this poll - to estimate how many fans of each songwriter we have currently active on the board.

realistically, stevie probably has more like 80 fans on TL, many of them who never seem to check Rumours forum, and not just 40+ who voted in this poll.

results so far:

Christine McVie 12
Lindsey Buckingham 20
Stevie Nicks 43

or

christine+lindsey - 32
stevie - 43

just show you how ridiculous is to do polls in which stevie's songs are pitted against the songs from other 2 songwriters (all you people who voted to do them:wavey: - such as current poll MSB has opened - just look at the results in it so far ). such poll results in most cases remind me of the US Congress - most votes are divided down the party lines :D

OK, I'm calling myself a 'georgettehead'. According to Wikipedia, 'georgette' is "springier and less lustrous than the closely related chiffon".

I voted for Stevie because, like David, I just have to.

Christine has the best in-studio voice, and has lost none of her range. She has trouble live when the sound is way up.

Stevie can sing live and in studio and makes the most of her diminished range.

Lindsey can't really sing anymore. He just sorta shouts and/or talks.

I couldn't have said it better. It's really too bad about Lindsey's voice. He could really get up there, when he was younger.

Christine really is amazing, that age only seemed to make her voice better. That's really unusual.

Especially considering her omnipresent drink and cigarette. Normally the combination of the two would destroy a singing voice.

I don't know how you can say that about someone who has not been heard from in almost a decade. The sixties is a precarious age, and Christine is almost 70 . I would be utterly shocked if she sounded exactly the same today as she did on ITM.

I've voted Christine because although i prefer Stevie's solo stuff a little more Christine's Mac stuff is just beautiful and I feel a more emotional connection to her material. I also think she's a little underrated and she has a wicked very English sense of humour and lovely legs. LOL.

Honestly, I wouldn't shocked. In fact, I'd be shocked if she hadn't sounded good. If she could make it to her early 60s sounding like she did on the White album, why not to the 70s?

I guess none of us will know for sure unless (until?) she puts an album out again.

i know what you mean re FM tour, saw youtube footage.

and i don't know what happened, but his solo live voice has been incredible all last year. you can argue that some of that has been pre-engineered and mixed in at live shows, but we've also heard him sing live at 92Y, without even a proper mic let alone any engineering (check a bit earlier in this thread for Hejira's recording of one of the songs he did then).

EDIT: and, i hate what he did to his voice on SWS. all 6 songs from that album are much better live, with his regular voice - imo, of course.

Well it's great to know he got his voice back. I guess it is very possible, with the right living, etc... Christine's voice in 1984 was much worse off than it was in 1987.

could be a part of it, i don't know whether he's using some kind of vocal coach or something too...

i wouldn't necessarily say he's got his voice "back" because he definitely doesn't have the high range anymore, not surprisingly. a lot of his sounding so good might be due to putting his songs in the key he can actually sing them in. just a speculation, but might be possible that with FM, with both his and SN's voice loosing range, they cannot find the range in which both of their voices can do their best.

another caveat, i don't like his young high girly-sounding voice. the voice he has now is lower, much fuller, and all around pretty impressive when you hear it during solo shows.

You know, I really appreciate his deeper "normal" voice after the helium thrill ride of Gift of Screws. We have that high, rapid manipulated voice throughout the song and then at the end you have regular Lindsey coming in and sing-talking "to the left, to the right, up and down, in and out, that's right baby, that's right" and I think it is such a hot, jarring contrast. My ears like the testosterone perk.

But I had a similar experience when I first heard Michael Jackson's 2000 Watts. I was thinking, "whoa, who is this man? Where's Michael been hiding him?"

Brilliant comparison b/w MJ and LB voices.

I don't care if Lindsey is high or low, I just want the whisper-voice to go!

As for my pick: I am thinking... Stevie may be the glamorous glue. But I'm not ready to vote yet.

who is your favorite Rumours-era singer/songwriter?

i may be wrong, but i have a feeling that most people on these boards have a clear preference for one or the other singer/songwriter, so this will be a very easy decision.

for people who are purely FM fans and love them all together and equally, or 2 of them equally (BN fans?), i understand this may be really hard, but please try to still pick just one...

from reading various forums here, my estimate would be there are maybe 5-10 Christine fans, ~20 Lindsey fans, and probably way more than 30-40 Stevie fans that are active at least occasionally... but i might be completely off.

very old poll... bumping since there appear to be many new members around here in the last 2 years, or so.

the most recent results:

Christine McVie 20 16.53%
Lindsey Buckingham 28 23.14%
Stevie Nicks 73 60.33%
Voters: 121.

i expect the ratio to remain about the same, but we'll see. it's easily possible that some Christine fans joined or came back since she ended her retirement.

That's interesting. I always thought this song was about Carol Ann, but if it's interpreted the way you are saying, it might be about Stevie. "She's a lot like you" etc. I could see that.

You guys have stumbled on my favorite topic; Lindsey's lyrics. Re: Go Insane- lifted off Tumblr-

Recited as an intro to Go Insane from 1992-2007.

The world was calling you away and your leaving was just a way of staying with what you had come to say,

This pain was a poem, slowly written, torn from the book and cast into a corner in the attic, where no one could look,

This rage for all to see, caught fire and burned all around me till there was nothing left to burn,

Now I stand alone in these attic bones and re-read that poem, all yellowed with age,

Tears heal such as healing is, so I cast that page into the ashes and there is no blame, only shades of regret,

and those too will fade…

as the world calls me away.

————————————————

Related quotes by LB through the years-

On the world calling her away- ”She (Stevie) was more or less selected by the world to do a job. She did what she had to do and that’s all there is to it.” 1984

When asked why they broke up: “Stevie, at some point her persona onstage was latched onto and she was in a sense called away by a larger world and separated on her own from me.”- Sound Opinions August 2013

On pain: ”Even when we first joined, Stevie and I were in some sort of a transition,” says Buckingham. And there was never a point where there wasn’t this underpinning of psychological torment.” 1997

"In the 12 years I was involved in the band, there was so much baggage and whatever was going on behind the scenes with the couples. It was all masked by a certain level of pain. Various levels of pain, quite a bit at times." 1997

Has the pain not yet dissipated? “I don’t think it ever will,” he says. “In some ways, that makes it more bittersweet.” 2003

On anger: “I’ve known Stevie since I was 16 years old. I was completely devastated when she took off. And yet I had to make hits for her, I had to do a lot of things for her that I really didn’t want to do, and yet I did them. So on one level I was a complete professional in rising above that, but there was a lot of pent-up frustration and anger towards Stevie in me for many years.” 2003

On his temper: “Some of it was situational. You’ve got to understand, it was very difficult for me to have Stevie break up with me and to still be in a band with her, to never get a sense of closure. It took its toll emotionally.” 2013

On the meaning of the song Go Insane: “We were disintegrating as couples, by virtue of that, we were suffering as people. So in order to get work done, I had to go through this elaborate exercise in denial- leaving whole areas of baggage on the other side of the room, compartmentalize feelings.. no time to get closure, to work things out.. working in a very highly charged and ambivalent environment. So the go insane thing- would just be whenever I let my guard down and got back to all the things I hadn’t dealt with, it was almost like going insane- like I always do. Took a long, long time, working in an artificial environment on a personal level. So many things not worked through for a long, long time." 4/2008

This reminds me- his comments on the "world" in this old Bob Dylan song seem very apropos as well:

"I Want You," by Bob Dylan, never fails to bring tears to my eyes. It seems to me to be a complete emotional picture of a young man, alienated and in need, cruel and tender, in the center of a world of pretense and hypocrisy—a world he’d wished for and helped create, but could not anticipate." ~Lindsey Buckingham

I'd say it's not much of a leap to think he hears this Dylan tune, and thinks of himself and those 12 years in FM.
