First of all I'm not sure why Jennifer Hudson is even relevant enough to be part of any tribute. And also, I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who thinks Adele is the most grossly overrated artist since U2 >.>

Edit: I am now happy with the Grammys, as my favorite Beatles songs were performed xD

I totally agree. Adele's album is not special. There is nothing super about it. And U2 is mega-overrated. Jennifer Hudson seems like a nice person, but she has not done much musically.

First of all I'm not sure why Jennifer Hudson is even relevant enough to be part of any tribute.

Watching interviews to the show producers, I understood there wasn't enough time to change radically the program (after learning about Whitney). Jennifer was already set to sing and probably the fatest way to include tributes was... Hey, sing I will always love you instead of this song

I adore Bon Iver! I was so pleased about that.

Glen Campbell, though, that was cool.

I really hate offending people, but I was NOT feeling the Beach Boys at all and let me not even express my feelings on Adam Levine.

I loved the last performance by Paul McCartney, but the first one was 'meh.' I'm just not into that song, tbh. I can like some solo Paul from time to time, but there's only a bit I really love.

I can't stand Taylor Swift.

I looked the other way with Nicki Minaj or whatever her name is...dear gawd.

I thought Jennifer Hudson's tribute was very nicely done.

BRUUUUUUCCCCEEE!!!! I love Bruce, and he is a great performer. But that song was 'meh' to me as well.

I'm confused about Lindsey because, although he definitely acknowledges Brian Wilson and Pet Sounds as inspiration to him, he seems to be drifting more and more away from labeling the BB as a main influence. Like, he made this top albums to listen to list on Amazon and I don't even think the Beach Boys were even on the VERY top of that list- like we would expect of Lindsey.

In fact, here (http://www.amazon.com/gp/richpub/syltguides/fullview/R1VBY0YE08Q5IP) is his list.

And YES, I highly approve with great love his choice to put John Lennon's solo album in his top 10 and not include one Beatles album. Man has the kind of punk edge I can love. And POB is flawless.

I think it's hard for anyone to sound that bad when you've got 300 people on stage singing and playing at the same time. I don't think they were lip synching at all, especially Brian Wilson. I am personally not a BB fan, largely due to their failure to evolve and sullying the brand. But I can definitely appreciate their golden era sound and Brian Wilson's orchestral approach to vocal harmony arrangement; nobody was doing 3- or 4-part harmonies like that in rock music. And you can clearly hear the BB influence in songs like "Sara" and "You Make Loving Fun." Oh, and of course, "Farmer's Daughter." And it goes without saying that bands like Crosy Stills Nash (& Young), The Byrds, The Mamas & the Papas, etc. would not have existed without the BB sound.

Oh, BTW... is it me, or was Mike Love really creepy looking/acting?

Like I said, I'd wager $50 that they were(not that we'll ever have proof). I actually just emailed my friend, who does sound for much bigger acts than I, to see if he's done the BB. He does a lot of casino stuff, and that's a typical BB venue....waiting to hear back from him.....

I DO do sound for touring acts(not that big, though), and I can tell you that about 80% of the newer acts, play along to tracks. I did sound 2 weeks ago, for a guy with the #1 country hit in the U.S., and sure enough, TRACKS. Extra keyboard parts, and all the background harmonies(the sound man plays the song on his laptop, and feeds it to the band's in ear monitors). A trained ear listening(especially since I have both of his albums, and have listened to them many times), can hear the extra harmonies, especially. The soundman does his best to keep it at a less than obvious level, but they're still there. Tracks are unfortunately common now.

Mike Love is the one with the ball cap???

Well it's in a different key to the studio version, and if she recorded a new version to lip-sync, I doubt she'd have left in the off notes...

Maybe that was part of it, because I immediately noticed a huge difference in the tone of Adele's voice last night. Missing was the subtle grittiness & that infamous break in her voice & vocals that is a huge endearing element & had become her trademark.

I saw her in one of her final concerts in Denver, Co (If not indeed the final one) at the end of May 2011 at a small venue holding maybe 2k (BlueBird landmark theatre). I think it may have been the last show before she cancelled her entire tour if memory serves correct. She commented that her doctors didn't recommend her doing the show, but she carried on despite their warnings & apparently strained her vocals to the point of having to cancel an entire year of touring, despite putting on a stellar vocal show that night. You would have never thought there was a thing wrong with her voice that evening, despite one or two bum notes - she sounded just like the record.

Last night at the Grammy's she did not sound like the record. Maybe it was nerves, Maybe it was a key change in the song, or perhaps she was taking no chances. But I think her tone has changed due to the node surgeries. And perhaps, just like Stevie in the early days, was singing incorrectly from her throat on occasion to attain that distinct sound. And now she's been coached to sing from her diaphragm to avoid further damage. Either way, no one can convince me she sounded the same. Her voice was still powerful, but some of the indelible nuances were noticeably (to this listener) absent.

I was thinking the same exact thing- that she seemed to have lost the very quality that made her so distinct in the first place- that wheezy, raspy chortley-ness that gave her bluesy melodies some degree of conviction. For all we know, her before voice may have been a damaged voice. And now it's a decidedly conventional-sounding thing.

I can't really think of too many singers who have bounced back from vocal surgery unscathed... perhaps Rod Stewart (although, to be honest, how can you tell when his voice is messed up? ). Bonnie Tyler made an entire career around a botched throat operation. But Elton John never quite bounced back. And oh, poor Julie Andrews. :distress:

Yes, I realize music is subjective, but...seriously? You seriously heard "God Only Knows" and "Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)" and "Here Today" and "I'm Waiting for the Day" and "I Just Wasn't Made For these Times" and "Hang On To Your Ego" and think that?

Nary a song about surfing on Pet Sounds. That drove some in the band and many around them batty--Brian Wilson did everything he could to drive the band away from their winning formula of surfing and cruising songs.

Of course, the Beach Boys still have a very specific sound, and not everyone will love it. Music, as we all know, is wildly subjective. It's just hard for me to wrap my mind around the idea of not liking "God Only Knows"!

I can't stand Bruce Springsteen. It's because my dad would always play the same three Bruce Springsteen songs over and over in the car when I was growing up. Literally, the three songs were: Human Touch, Born In The USA, and Glory Days. So I really wasn't thrilled by his performance.

I don't like Bon Iver. For one thing, they aren't a "New" artist, they've put out two albums. And Justin Vernon rubbed me the wrong way with his acceptance speech.

I honestly thought Adele killed it. I know people are divided on her and her album, but I think it was great and very relatable. Hopefully I'll get to catch her on tour later this year if she goes on one.

Overall, it was a pretty decent show, with only a few God-awful performances.

I was so sure that Nicki Minaj was going to win, but apparently, America still has the sense for good music. I don't like Bon Iver either - talk about snooze-worthy, boring music? This is it. They should not have been eligible for New Artist. However, I disagree regarding his acceptance speech. The Grammy's are truly a total joke among anyone who doesn't listen to Top 40 radio. They pour exessive adulation upon one artist every year, give some obligatory nod to another (all based on sales, not actual talent or the merit of their work) and totally ignore dozens, no - hundreds and hundreds of other artists who are actually making the music that people listen to and talk about in their day to day lives. In that sense, I thought Justin's acceptance speech was appropriate - "Thanks, I guess but so many others truly deserve this." That's what I got out of it.

This is exactly what I was thinking about... Chris "Beat Her Down" Brown. For one thing, I was just floored that his sh*t album won a Grammy, let alone received a nomination. Secondly, this guy is a disgusting blight on society and doesn't deserve to be breathing, let alone win a Grammy for that sh*tty autotuned garbage. He beat the living crap out of his girlfriend. Let me repeat that: He beat the living crap out of his girlfriend. How is this monster getting applause and fanfare so soon after that incident? And exactly what has he done to redeem himself in the intervening years (not that it's even possible to make up for what he committed)? He is still a hothead who still has anger management issues (as evidenced by his last GMA appearance), and he still makes horrible music. I wanted to smack some sense into everyone in the Staples Center who gave a standing ovation for his lip synched, poorly rehearsed performance. What's next? Will the Grammy organization honor Mel Gibson with a humanitarian lifetime achievement award?

First of all I'm not sure why Jennifer Hudson is even relevant enough to be part of any tribute. And also, I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who thinks Adele is the most grossly overrated artist since U2 >.>

Edit: I am now happy with the Grammys, as my favorite Beatles songs were performed xD

I second every word of this!

I quite agree Mick!

And I don't agree that because Whitney received no nomination in 2009 that she shouldn't be recognized as a beloved singer by her peers. Even if you didn't like Jennifer H,'s rendition, it was still tastefully done. I'm not a Grammys lover by any means. I find them to be chalk-filled with whatever artists fulfill the industry big-shot tab much of the time. And sometimes they are really crap.

But you can still enjoy parts of it.

Who cares if Stevie wasn't nominated? PJ Harvey wasn't and she had the best album of 2011 in my opinion. So what? People love SN regardless. And people love and respect PJ as well.

You only take it all with a sense of humor and understanding. Paul McCartney will ALWAYS be at these types of things, for example. Even if his song sucks. It's Paul McCartney, 1/4th of the greatest band that ever graced this world. And therefore, he is a legend and he is representing that part of the Beatles that still lives on. I don't particularly think his solo music is anything outstanding in compared to many independent artists that don't always get a fair shake, but that is the politics of the game- in the music business, Hollywood, and in real life. :) And I just smile, nod, and enjoy whatever I like and whatever I don't like I share with you good people.

Come on. These shows are nothing to get upset over. Cause Chris brown won, Does his album become mandatory listening? No. It's just a silly show.

Mick

By letting him perform at the "biggest stage in music," the Grammys validated him.

Call it a silly show, but that represented a real forgiveness of his actions. I have a major problem with that, actually.

What can a successful performer do that won't be forgiven and forgotten in a matter of a few years?

On the matter of Chris Brown, though, I can understand your frustration. I don't like Chris Brown or his music, and his actions in real life are despicable.

But I do believe that human being deserve a chance to reform and maybe he has. That doesn't erase what he did. But maybe he learned through his actions and the consequences that befell him. I'm not condoning what he did, but I do believe in forgiveness.

Personally I like Jennifer Hudson, but don't care much for her music. I thought her performance was honest and heartfelt, and surely it could not have been easy to maintain her composure - but she did and that's admirable.

A song like that always makes us think of the ones we loved, or have loved - I can't imagine how she did it, not only with the death of one of her own idols the day prior, but also considering the fact that it wasn't that long ago that her own mom and brother were murdered.

I believe in forgiveness too. Heck, I can appreciate and support Lindsey in spite of what I absolutely believe he did to Carol Ann Harris.

But the GMA incident confirmed, in my mind, that Chris Brown hasn't really learned anything. He's an angry, violent brute, and he's shown only very limited remorse for beating the crap out of his girlfriend.

I agree. I don't like what he did one bit. But how do you know for certain that he's not really sorry for what he did? You don't. It's no excuse, but maybe he is. And like or not we ALL have darkness in us. We act on it sometimes. we all have the potential to do deplorable things. We're not proud of it. but we sometimes do things we regret. But there is redemption.

Well, the best thing to do is simply ignore him. We live in an unfair world where people glorify undeserving pop stars, murderers are free to roam, and some of the most gifted people go almost unnoticed in many cases.

So... Just let him continue his thing and we can refocus on people worth our time.

As for LB and CAH, believe me...Lindsey was one in a group of MANY drugged-up rock stars who did stupid, careless things. Just because his ex wrote about it doesn't mean he was the only one. And doesn't excuse him either. But I think the man he has become makes a huge impact on any suggestion of change or transformation. :)
