View Full Version : Anyone interested in Madonna's new album?

I heard demo of "Give Me All Your Love" few weeks ago and I must admit it didn't grab me. Maybe it's because I don't like Nicky Minaj, who seems to be very annoying person. Besides it's too poppy for my taste. Still I hope the album "M.D.N.A." will provide few enjoyable songs. What do you expect from the new album of Queen of Pop?
Hmm, I like Madonna's older stuff best. I personally wouldn't spend my money on her new album and I agree, not too excited about Nicki Minaj being included.

I haven't loved anything Madonna has done since Ray Of Light but I will check it out to see if it's any good. I love her earlier stuff, she was untouchable from 1984 - 1998. My favourites are often her ballads actually, especially Take A Bow and Crazy For You, in fact the whole Something To Remember album is fantastic. Like A Prayer too.

I am excited!
I am not, however, interested in the inclusion of M.I.A. or Nicky Minaj. I hope and pray that their presence on the album is understated.
I've only heard the new song once, and it reminded me very much of the early 80's stuff that the GoGos were making when i was a kid - I really like some of the retro 80's sounds I've been hearing and hope that 'sound' is prominent on this album.
Madonna's career is in an interesting position right now. She's not with any major music label, and I hardly consider her Live Nation deal to be worthy of making great albums for. I totally expect Madonna to fill her contractual obligations with very little interest or oomph. After all, who does she really need to impress anymore? She's an icon, a superstar in the greatest sense of the word. There is no need for hit singles, no need for platinum selling albums, no need for cool videos. There is, simply, no need to impress anyone. She's really done it all, and with the success of her tours the need for new music isn't really there. I really don't think she even cares anymore.
I do expect the media to make much ado about nothing when it comes to the supposed rivalry they are building up between Madge and Gaga. It's funny - Madonna describes the similarities between Born This Way and Express Yourself an "interesting" and the media only days later is calling it a "slam".
If it were up to me, I'd prefer that Madonna team up with Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray again and pump out a few albums that have that classic 1980's Madonna sound (think Open Your Heart or Dress You Up), rather than trying to keep up with some recent fad or trend that she likes. Madonna used to set trends, and now it feels like she's trying to keep up with them. M.I.A.? Really?
Ultimately, there's never been a Madonna album I didn't eventually come to love, and I don't expect this one to be any different - but I'm admittedly nervous.

I hope it's not true :) You know, I think she shoudn't be interested in sales and certifications. She should just release great album like she used to do in the past. Personally I hope that one day she'll go back to "American Life" style. That electronica-folky stuff was really interesting and way too underrated. I remember hearing "Nothing Fails" and asking myself "why wasn't it a bigger hit?".

I'm a big Go-Go's fan so this is very interesting and yes, I couldn't agree more with your other comment.
EDIT: I just listened to it and yes, from what I hear it's very Go-Gos. Especially at the start.

I have a feeling I won't care for Madonna's upcoming work, but I still am interested to see what she has to say. What I heard of Hard Candy was a sonic abortion. Like Al said, Madonna really has seemed to of lost her touch post Ray Of Light. Though I will admit, Confessions On A Dance Floor is my single biggest guilty pleasure. :o

Agreed on all counts. My favorite albums from her are Erotica, Bedtime Stories, and Ray of Light. Most of her newer stuff has been somewhat disappointing, although like Louie said, Confessions is a guilty pleasure.

I think her Confessions album from '05 is just brilliant... It's her only album I like every track... But I like a lot of her stuff.
I'm interested in hearing it... Heard that one leaked half finished song, that sounded pretty finished to me.. sounds pretty good, and have heard the tune she just won the golden globe for from her movie and it too sounds really good...
Didn't she just sign like a 3 album deal with Interscope? [speaking about not being on a label, proper].
I don't follow her close enough to know everything about her, but why does the press and I suppose to a large extent, the public give her such a hard time, most notably for sounding british when she lived in Britain for years? I always found it kind of funny when ever anyone bashed her saying she's trying to sound 'British', like it's all faked. It works the other way too.. When you have a transplant that's say from either the UK or Australia living in North America they just over time naturally start to sound American... goes both ways. Has always stuck me as odd!

Hard Candy was just so dreadful I'm not getting my hopes up. I will admit that as long as she is releasing albums I'll be buying them just because of how much I love her. Give Me All Your Love sounds putrid to be honest, but I'm sure there will be at least a few songs I will like.

Nothing Fails is a great song, from a great album. Mother & Father is another great track! Many don't like that album, but, well, it's bound to happen (it's one of my favorite Madonna albums - probably top 3).
Artists grow - they can't always stay the same or they get stale. Sometimes our tastes grow in the same direction as well, and sometimes not. Many of my favorites from even 10 years ago no longer hold any interest for me, but Madonna always manages to keep me interested. Hopefully this remains true!
Hard Candy has some great moments - Voices, Devil Wouldn't Recognize You, Give It To Me, Beat Goes On, Miles Away - all are great songs easily as good as her best classic material.

Ahhh yes, Bedtime Stories - for me, that was the last full Madonna album I really enjoyed. I was not a fan of the "enlightened" Madonna so, Ray of Light did nothing for me. There have been a few gems here and there but I absolutely loved the Erotica and Bedtime Stories era. I'm sure it has a lot to do with me coming out then as well.

Good to see somebody who also likes "American Life". I agree, it's one of her best but it takes more time to get into it. It's not insant musical gratification in the vein of albums such as "True Blue" or "Madonna", you have to sort of...dig deeper. But that's what fans really like to do :)
My Top 5 Madonna's albums are:
1. Erotica
2. American Life
3. Bedtime Stories
4. Confessions on a Dancefloor
5.Like a Prayer

Bedtime Stories is far and away my fav Madonna album (of the ones I've heard). The whole slow transition from R&B to mystical existentialism is just genius to me. I also think the album is also probably Madonna's most lyrically honest, too. I just love Bedtime Stories... it's one of my all time fav albums, period.

"Bedtime Stories" is truly one of the greatest albums that she's released. I love that Urban/R&B edge to it. And apart from #1 single "Take a Bow" there's a lot to enjoy, especially Bjork-written title track (a kind of introduction to the future "Ray of Light" electronica world), anthemic "Survival" and funky "Don't Stop". But "Erotica" is even better. I'm not gay yet that album's dance settings and lyrics provide me a great musical experience. Besides, it was my first Madonna's album ever, so I guess my opinion may have something to do with so called sentimentality :) "Where Life Begins"-my all time favourite song from that album, even with its raunchy lyrics :)

Erotica is a great album. Bad Girl is particular is such a fantastic song. I think it's underrated even by Madonna herself, since it's not on GHV2. The video is also one of her best.

You are absolutely right! "Bad Girl" is such a great song, one of her best ballads ever and she didn't even put it on "Something to Remember" (Ballads album). Who needs two bland versions of "I Want You"? Not me, anyway...:) I can see that Madonna depreciate a lot of her ballads. For example her #1 song "This Used To Be My Playground" didn't find its way on any compilation album. "You'll See"-another gem, has been rarely or never performed during her world tours. But going back to "Bad Girl"...My girlfriend loves this song to pieces! And not only because of the title...:) The lyrics are quite depressing but it only makes me want to go back to this song again and again. And maybe this is the reason why I appreaciate "American Life" album so much...the lyrics are simple yet memorable... And a song "I'm So Stupid" sounds like a sequel to "Bad Girl" lyrical content, at least for me...I don't know but I feel there's a kind of connection between these two songs.

Something To Remember is my favourite Madonna album and yes, if Bad Girl replaced one of the version of I Want You the whole thing would have been absolutely perfect. This Used To Be My Playground is on it.

I can see that, and agree somewhat - but I'd choose American Life as her most lyrically honest and personal album. Songs like Mother & Father, Easy Ride, Nobody Knows Me, Nothing Fails, I'm So Stupid - I don't know what was really going on in her personal world at the time but it was definitely a hard time for her.
On another note, I gave Erotica a spin last night. I've forgotten how much I love Waiting and Thief of Hearts. "You'll do it, you'll take it. You'll screw it, you'll fake it." Take that Annette Bening.

I'm just listening to Madonna's "Ray of Light" and must say that it's impeccable set of music. I know that for many people this type of Techno/Electronica/Pop hybrid is too much but truly this album has got only better with time. I think it needs more time and patience to appreaciate but finally it'll display its beauty for the casual listener.

I wasn't really keen on that Give Me All Your Love song, to be truthful.
I have not listened to Girls Gone Wild, and probably won't until the album is released. I really prefer to hear an album in it's entirety, and not sample the songs ahead of time.
I hope the songwriting is good - I'd really like Madonna to have a hit of the same caliber as Vogue, Express Yourself, Frozen or Open Your Heart.
In fact I'd really kind of prefer that she go back to working with Patrick Leonard.

Without having yet heard the song, I have to disagree.
The problem is not Madonna's talent, it's the constant re-invention of her "sound" that she perpetuates by never working with the same producers. Every album has different producers, who are also actually co-writers. She usually only writes lyrics with a bare-bones melody, and the instrumentation is filled out by her chosen producers. Think Stevie and Lindsey, Gypsy for instance - the Bella Donna outtake versus the Mirage version - totally different sounds for the same song, and nothing like the demos, really.
Madonna is always searching for a new, fresh sound for her music. The fact that your tastes are no longer aligned with hers doesn't mean she's lost anything other than your ear. ;)
I hated Erotica when the single came out, and was indeed certain the whole album would be dreadful. I thought Secret was positively the worst song she had ever done - it sounded weird and very un-Madonna-like. Of course my mind was quickly changed when I got Bedtime Stories and played it to death. I listened to American Life once and forgot it existed for 5 years, and now I'd rank it in my top 3 Madonna albums ever. It wasn't that the songs were bad, it was that my tastes at the time were just not there.
If she always followed the same formula, we would never have had Erotica - hailed at the time as a sound that no one else was making, Ray of Light, also a landmakrk album that sounded like nothing she'd ever done. Confessions on a Dancefloor - pure disco and totally unique among Madonna albums.
Artists have to change and grow, or else they become stagnant. Imagine Fleetwood Mac with no Tusk, no Tango, no Mirage - just copy after copy of Rumours. Snooze...
I'm not saying you'll come to like this album, but if you are a Madonna fan, then don't write it off without giving the album a chance. It's not even out yet.

Things don't seem to be right for Madonna these days. Her first single "Give Me All Your Lovin" flopped in UK, becoming her least successful first single ever! In Poland the song is rarely being played by radio stations. To be honest I think this song is less than stellar. "Girls Gone Wild" is slightly better but hardly a cassic in the vein of her other hit singles. Of course, as a fan I will go and buy "MDNA" but don't expect too much from this album. Definately it won't be "Confessions On The Dancefloor" Part II. And as for Madonna's concert in Poland...well it seems that her last tour showed how many fans she has out here, so I am sure that next time she will visit us again :)

Madonna doesn't get much radio play in American either, not since the Music album. I heard Hung Up only twice on the radio (odd since it was number 1 in 41 countries at the same time, earning it a Guinness World Record AND sold over 9 millions copies, making it one of the most highest selling singles of all time AND was the most successful dance song of the 2000s in the United States, by topping the Dance/Club Play Songs Decade-end chart)
4 Minutes was a moderate radio hit.
I don't expect any radio play for her new material. It's ageism, but any Stevie Nicks fan is all too familiar with that.

Ray Of Light, the highly underrated American Life & Confessions On A Dance Floor, were the last consistently good Madonna records. Hard Candy was spotty. And I am completely underwhelmed with these 2 new songs she's released from MDNA. Her singing is off and superficial sounding, bordering on vapid. Same goes for the lyrics (blech). I'm not jumping out of my seat with much excitement or enthusiasm for her upcoming release.

Is it me... or did Madonna kind of phone in her last two albums? Like her or hate her, you could usually count on her to do something new or inventive with each album. And after writing serious, introspective songs for much of the late 1990s - early aughts, it just seems like she kind of gave up being a serious artist after American Life. Every album after that has just become more disposable and vapid lyrically- almost as if she just goes through the motions just to make catchy pop songs that will help to sustain her record-breaking chart run. Emotionally/intellectually, she's long since checked out. I just can't reconcile this newest song (which sounds like something Kylie Minogue passed on), with its incredibly banal lyrics about clubbing and dancing, with this divorced, spiritually evolved middle-aged mother of four living in a double-wide beaux art mansion on the Upper East Side. I'm not saying that Madonna has to become a stuffy old crone; but is it asking too much to expect an artist to demonstrate a little forward motion after a thirty-year career?

I would agree with you about Hard Candy, but not Confessions. Hard Candy -did- have some stellar moments, thoguh - Voices, Devil Wouldn't Recognize You - these to me are classic Madonna tracks, on par with her best work. I also really enjoy Beat Goes On, Give It To Me and Miles Away, but the rest of the album I dont have much love for.
Confessions on the other hand...one of her best, for me. :)
But ultimately, I do think she's uninspired at the moment. I had hoped that her divorce from Guy would give her some fodder for great songwriting, but it seems she's determined to avoid being genuine. Then again, with only two leaks it's hard to judge an entire album, and maybe there are stellar tracks being saved for the actual release to surprise us all. It's like basing an opinion of the entire Ray of Light album off of Mer Girl and Little Star.
One more thing - I noticed recently when she was on Jay Leno....she's nervous, and seems a bit unsure of herself. Perhaps even a bit...broken? It was a radical departure from the Madonna of the early-to-mid 90's who would say anything and do what she pleased.

The cool reception of her new material might stem from a fact that it is no longer original just like it used to be. Probably she's lost interest in being cutting edge artist that offers her fans something more than just few commercially sounding singles. She tries too hard to be relevant in the realm of young Pop market, which of course doesn't work because it's high time for another, "adult" chapter in her career. I really thought that she would come up with more rocking album but it seems that all we'll get is just a group of Rihanna and Lady GaGa's left overs. That is why I love so much Stevie's recent album. "In Your Dreams" doesn't pretend to be anything that Stevie is not.

The initial reviews on Amazon look good. I was worried, admittedly....
http://www.amazon.com/MDNA-Madonna/dp/B00756GKBA
I listened to the whole thing yesterday while cleaning (digital download), and I have to say - I liked most of what I heard. There were some definite throw-backs to classic Madonna; or rather I should say classic Madonna song-writing. A few of the songs took me back to her Erotica material., but of course with a very 2012 sonic attitude.
Oh and thank God - I can honestly say this album is hip-hop free. :woohoo:
Anyone else had the chance to hear the album? I'd say give it a full spin - maybe two or three before you declare (once again) that Madonna's career is over.

I think it's a very good album... Cool sounds... Some lyrics are meh... but i'm a sound guy, I can get over cheezy lyrics if the music is good and I like all of it. A few of the delux tracks which one usually assumes are non-album worthy - are totally worthy.. I F'd up and Beautiful Killer as two examples... Good album! I think Gang Bang is a pretty cool song...

After all, who does Madonna really need to impress anymore? There is no need for hit singles, no need for platinum selling albums, no need for cool videos. There is, simply, no need to impress anyone. She's really done it all. I really don't think she even cares anymore.
If that is how she feels she should just go away.
It would be nice if for once in her life she'd just
concentrate on her voice. Impress us with great
songs and vocals to match. That is, if she can.
Her controversial side is a bit played now.

Yeah... I am pretty much with you on that one. I thought she was going really somewhere kinda cool with Music, and then American Life (she was playing the guitar at one point!), but the whole thing just turned limp for me with her last 2-3 albums.

I'd say maybe 30ish to be generous..Kelly Clarkson is almost 30 and just had a number one pop single.Madonna however is a rode hard and put away wet 53 so it is doubtful.

I like this cd alot more than Hard Candy, which was a low I think for her. Love Spent is an amazing pop song, why wasn't this the single. Gang Bang is cool and very dark. Some of the songs don't grab me as much, but as a whole I feel it worth a listen and repeat playing. F&ck Up is such a different song and very personal. Give Me All Ur Luv I feel is not the highlight of the cd at all. It doesn't even represent the sound on the cd either.

It's staggering that Madonna has had - what - 89 singles in the course of her career, since 1984?
Here is Billboard's all-Madonna Top 40; with a video for every track. It's like getting in a time machine.

This made me chuckle a few times.
http://www.cnn.com/2012/04/06/opinion/granderson-madonna/index.html
CNN) -- I thought she was over. Madonna, that is.
I thought she was too old to be referring to herself as a "girl." I thought pop music passed her by. I thought Lady Gaga had killed her.
And then I look at this week's Billboard chart and I see I thought wrong.
Her 12th CD, "MDNA" debuted No. 1 on the album chart and she has two singles on the dance-chart Top 10. She's 53 and the clubs are banging her new stuff, including "Give Me All Your Luvin," which became her 38th top 10 hit on the pop chart. For those of you keeping score, that's more than Elvis, more than The Beatles. I'm not saying she's better, but clearly she's done -- correction -- doing more.
This year she won another Golden Globe and her halftime performance at the Super Bowl drew more viewers than the game itself, according to Nielsen. I know the perception is that only gay men care about Madonna, but if that were true, given the 114 million viewers who tuned in to watch her at halftime, maybe "don't ask, don't tell" should have been called "just assume."
The reality is it's hard for pop music to leave behind someone who keeps leading the pack. Madonna had the highest grossing tour ever for a solo artist (2008) and has sold more than 300 million records worldwide. She's an '80s child whose 2005 single "Hung Up" holds the Guinness Book record for topping the charts in 41 countries, while 2012's MDNA was No. 1 on iTunes in 40 countries.
That's not "over," that's now.
When you look at where Madonna's career is today in the same week we learned Whitney Houston drowned in a foot of water, you're reminded that God truly does work in mysterious ways. The two pop icons released debut albums within two years of each other, Madonna in 1983 and Houston in 1985.
Of course, Houston was the former model with a voice for the ages, while Madonna was the thin-voiced tart rolling around on the floor of the MTV music awards in a wedding dress proclaiming that she felt like a virgin. If anyone might have been expected to meet a desperate, tragic end, back then the safe money would have been on Madonna. And yet Houston's gone, Michael Jackson's gone, Prince is semi-retired and everyone else, with the exception of U2, is making their money off nostalgia.
Meanwhile, Madonna has methodically become, arguably, the greatest recording artist of all time. Who would've thunk it?
As for the music, her latest CD is not breaking any new ground, but it does remind everyone who owns the ground Gaga, Rihanna, Beyonce and others are walking on. In fact, each time they receive a royalty check, they should be sending Madonna a cut.
While MDNA is about three songs too long for my taste, I will tell you the first five songs make it very difficult not to want to dance, and that the track "Gang Bang" is pure genius. As you could probably figure out from the title, it's not radio friendly, but likely not because of what you may think. And that, in a nutshell, is why Madonna is who she is.
You can tell you're watching a Woody Allen film with the first five minutes of dialogue. You can identify the beautiful prose of Toni Morrison within a couple of pages. But my 15-year-old came home one day and asked who I was listening to. I told him Madonna and my son, who loves techno and hip hop, thought I was joking.
"Seriously... like your Madonna?" he asked.
"Yep," I said.
"Well, she's still old but that song's not."
The song was "Gang Bang" and I'm glad he left the room before she started singing. As I said, it's not radio friendly. But then again, it wouldn't be Madonna if a song like that was.

Exclusive: Madonna "MDNA" Will Have Biggest Second Week Drop in Chart History

Madonna‘s “MDNA” album had the biggest second week drop in chart history last week, I am told. When all the numbers are in on Tuesday night, “MDNA” will have fallen from number 1 by 88%–from 359,000 copies in its first week to roughly 46,000 the second week. Wow. The first week’s sales, as I revealed exclusively (and then the New York Post lifted it from us), most of Madonna’s first week sales were CDs that were included in the sale of concert tickets. That promotion artificially inflated Madonna’s numbers, putting her first before Lionel Richie and his “Tuskegee” album. In the second week, Richie fell only 47% and sold about 110,000 albums–which is normal. “Tuskegee” will now finish much higher than “MDNA.” I do think that all the people involved in the Madonna ticket-CD deal should apologize to Richie for denying him his rightful place at number 1, starting with Billboard and SoundScan. But Richie’s consolation is that he has a major hit, while “MDNA” is a total dud. So far, “MDNA” has not produced anything like a hit single either, no radio play or anything to provide organic promotion. But Madonna’s concert tour with Live Nation will be a big hit, so it’s not like we have to worry about her financial situation.

It's a shame she won't promote it and is concentrating on the tour. (obviously the tour will be huge) but this album is brilliant it needs the recognition it deserves but Guy Oseary said they are trying something different promotion wise. Admittedly Madonna's album practically promoted itself without any actual participation from Madonna herself. All of the major print and online news media posted reviews. Her album was marketed heavily online on flash sale websites at hefty discounts. She's launched the Truth or Dare fragrance with the commercials playing music from the new album, the Schmirnoff commercials (yeah, as if Madge has ever drunken that cheap-ass vodka) are everywhere, plus there was the concert ticket promotion. Her new album was pretty much unavoidable except when it came to radio. Ironically, broadcast radio is a dying medium, yet, Madonna's catchiest new song, "Turn up the Radio," is like a rallying cry for them. Alas, radio has this strange aversion to Madonna for some reason...

I agree that the album has kind of promoted itself but she needs to get out there do some interviews (not just in America) The UK has always been one of her strongest audiences but we have nothing. Masterpiece is getting a lot of air play but they aren't releasing it as a single. It doesn't help that the singles (physical copy) are being released months after the mp3, a lot of her fans are collectors who like to buy the stuff just to add to their Madonna collection. Although the UK is getting GGW as a picture disk sometime this month (date keeps changing) so maybe they are upping their game.I think they have gone about this all wrong tbh. We had a few adverts on TV and an appearance on Graham Norton months ago to promote W.E but that is all. Fans seem to be trying to promote it more than them which is stupid. And yes the radio do seem to have some kind of problem with her (apart from masterpiece I have heard nothing on the radio at all)

Well, clearly saturating the press and making appearances are no guarantee of success. Look at Adele. Her 21 album is the the modern-day equivalent of Rumours in terms of commercial success in America. Astronomical success. And she managed to do with it with minimal U.S. television exposure, minimal press and only a brief tour of theatres. She does not play to "the streets," doesn't do slick dance moves or wear outrageous outfits. Although she is still very young, she reads as a much older woman due to her sophisticated styling and her big voice. And most obviously, her physical size puts her at a huge (so-to-speak) disadvantage in terms of her marketability. She seems like a very sweet girl but she's not exactly going to be a Mensa member anytime soon. So what could it be about Adele? Beats me. But I suspect it has something to do with the fact that she presents herself as the antithesis of everything else going on around her; she paved her own separate lane. Maybe that's why Madonna is not succeeding despite all of the marketing efforts; she's caught up in a traffic jam with Britney and Katy.
Speaking of marketing, who was the genius behind Lionel Ritchie's comeback? And how can we hook him up with Stevie? Seriously. Lionel Ritchie was beyond washed up for the longest time. Now all of the sudden he is at the top of the charts again despite the fact that he is well into his 60s. With a country album, no less. Does this mean any artist over the age of 60 has to record country music in order to become commercially successful?

I think Guy Oseary needs to get his sh*t together. Like I said though I think they are more concentrated on tour which is probably going to be one of her best..well hopefully anyway. TBH MDNA is a sucess but measured up against her other work it's not done as well. I just think a Stevie duets album is inevitable. I just don't understand why she didn't do one sooner. I'm not too crazy about the idea, but it's a guaranteed formula for success, e.g., Lionel Richie, Carlos Santana, Tony Bennett, etc.

It debuted at number one selling 740,000 copies worldwide (359,000 in the US) , but sales quickly dropped off.
It's doing better than her last album, so...that's good?
**MDNA is her fifth No. 1 studio album in a row.
**"Girls Gone Wild" has gone to No. 4 on the Billboard Dance charts and is the "greatest gainer" for the last three weeks.
**Her first dance hit from MDNA "Give Me All Your Luvin" after going to No. 1 remains in the Top Ten in the No. 8 spot.

Girl Gone Wild ended up going to No. 1 this week on the Dance Charts... She beat her own record!. Second week sales were about 46k vs 359k the prior week... Huge drop off, but the album is still in the top 10 in the US. It's a good album, and without a top 100 single getting played everywhere, and with virtually no promotion done on the album, I think it's done alright...

I gave this album a second chance and to be honest I must say that it's not as bad as I thought in the beginning. Of course, it's not her strongest album but definately not a total failure. "Gang Bang" is my favourite song and even though some people complain about its lyrical content still I think it gives the song the edge and makes it more enjoyable. "I'm Addicted" is another highlight. I still don't like "Superstar", "I'm a Sinner", "Some Girls" and "I Don't Give A..." but on the other hand I convinced myself to appreciate "Love Spent" and poppy "Turn Up The Radio". All in all, it's not a bad album but it needs more time :)
