I'm confused...the obituary states she and Jess were married for 63 years. Is that 63 years till the time Jess died or are they including it up til the day Barbara died? Or, is it just an error. Cause the former would've meant that they married when Barbara was 15. ???

Thank you THINKABOUTIT. I donated here and to the Arizona Heart Foundation in Barbara Nicks' honor. I think it's great they thought to include her fans specifically.

This isn't really odd for their generation. My grandma (a farm-raised girl) was married at 14. And had my mom - the first of 6 kids - at age 15.

Stevie was quoted as saying her mom married her dad at 19. They married in 1947, Barbara's year of birth was 1927. In their eyes, I suppose their marriage continued. Jess' obit stated 58 years of marriage in 2005.

Not to be mean - but don't donate if you feel that way. It's the Nicks family wishes for gifts to be filtered through the Salvation Army. Let's please not turn this thread into an argument over the organization. It's supposed to be informational for those who wish to participate in honoring the memory of Barbara Nicks per the family's directive. The Salvation Army does a lot of good for people in need and I think that is what is important.

I was passing on information people may not know about them ,
you might feel differently if you were gay or knew someone with AIDS that they turned away .

Not to be mean, but if Barbara Nicks had requested that donations be sent to, say, the Ku Klux Klan, I think I would respectfully decline. I don't deny the fact that the Salvation Army has done a lot of good. But at the same time, I don't think respect for equal rights is a sliding scale; it is absolute. You either support discrimination or you're against it. Piety and righteousness has no place in the business of charity, and it appalls me that any so-called "charity" applies their public goodwill toward such meaningless, hurtful ends in the name of faith.
I would like to assume that the Nicks estate was simply unaware of the S.A.'s discriminatory practices and that they would have reconsidered had they known what was being perpetrated.

Being one of MANY Stevie Nicks/FM fans of the LGBT community, I'm in total agreement about knowing this information, and inequality practices of institutions & non-profit charities to whom I chose to give donations. It matters...about what is wrong and what is righteous.

You need to do what is right for you.
I posted this in another thread:
Here's a few that we know Stevie has supported:
Arizona Heart Foundation
1910 East Thomas Road
Suite 220
Phoenix, AZ 85016
(you can do this in honor of Barbara Nicks--or all the Nicks')
http://azheartfoundation.org/donate-...art-foundation
if you want to download a form and mail it in, the Arizona Heart people have one here:
http://azheartfoundation.org/sites/d...ation-Form.pdf
City of Hope--there's one in LA, perhaps one nearer to you:
City of Hope.
1500 East Duarte Road
Duarte, California 91010
https://secure.cityofhope.org/donate...dsForHope.aspx
Stevie's mentioned supporting the USO:
https://www.uso.org/donate/
(you can do this in honor of Barbara Nicks)
She's got the iPOD thing that she does
There's lots of ways you can show your support of Stevie and honor her mother in this time if that's your interest. Do it for yourself . . . do it "for the world."
It's all tax deductible, too.

Okay. I just think it's disrespectful to argue about it here. Anyone can research the SA website to see where the monies go. Don't donate (or donate to one of the above) if you don't like the Nicks family choice.

I agree! It seems tacky to argue about it here....just read the SA website...and decide for yourselves.
Barbara Nicks was an 84 year old woman who fondly remembered the SA helping her family when she was a child....I'm sure she had no idea what their politics were...

Nobody is arguing here. It is just about raising awareness so that people make informed decisions before they part with their hard earned money.
BTW, I agree with you that Barbara probably had no idea what kind of organization the SA had become.

I think it's rude for some people to tell other people that expressing
their opinions is rude. complaints about the
SA are as legit as any other...
or maybe this thread is supposed to be a
big ass dreary fest or something. oh wait,
that should be the condolences thread, shouldn't
it?

I don't think anyone is arguing here... they're just sharing information about this particular charity & expressing their opinions on why or why not the organization merits a donation of their hard earned money.
Regarding why this charity donation was set up is pretty clear. Stevie & family would much rather have people send their resources to a cause they feel is worthwhile vs being drowned in flower bouquets and teddy bears.
For me personally, I don't care one iota which charity was chosen... I didn't know Barbara or anyone in the Nicks clan. To send money in honor of someone I do not know is not something I'd do. But that's just me.
Morale of the story: for those who chose to send money, it's a very noble action and you don't have to justify your decision to anyone. For those who don't, you don't have to justify yourselves either. :)

I was trying to point out the thread could potentially turn into an argument, not that it already had. I respect the family's wishes and believe it's a personal choice that really didn't need to be debated here. I never donate money to anything unless I find out what the organization stands for and how the monies are appropriated.

I read this on "Stevie Nicks In Her Own Words" website:
My mother's mom and dad were divorced very early, and her stepfather worked in a coal mine in Ajo, Arizona and died of tuberculosis. She had a hard life, was very poor, was 19 when she got married, and had me at 20. My dad went after a big job in a big company, got it, did very well, and liked to move around and travel a lot. My mom got used to it and had a lot of fun, but she's much more practical, frugal ~ she still sniffs her nose at my dad's and my expensive tastes ~ and she wanted more than anything else for her daughter and son [Christopher] to be independent and self-assured.
~Stevie Nicks, Billboard, 1998
[On her fondest childhood memory] The summers I spent in Ajo, Arizona with my Grandmother, starting when I was around four.
~Stevie Nicks, Ask Stevie, www.nicksfix.com, 2000
Stevie mentions her mother was very poor, came from a poor family--perhaps this is when she had her contact with the Salvation Army.

I've known about the SA's discrimnation for years and have not given them a cent since then.I do however give money to some Catholic charities so I guess one has to weigh the egregiousness of the transgression against the good the organization does when deciding where your donations go.

Amen. I am "Gay" too and that does not stop me from shopping at Salvation Army and donating a LOT of used things to SA, Goodwill etc. THE SA is the biggest giver and friend the Poor, homeless etc has. nobody touches them. The good that SA does far outweighs their beliefs. They don't hurt me at all. In fact, there is a HUGE SA headquarters and training center literally in the midst of all the gaybars and bathhouses and HIV treatment centers in Chicago and everyone gets along just fine there! The only true discrimination the SA does is they do not offer domestic partner benefits to spouses etc BECAUSE of the SA's evangelical roots. Big freaken deal people! If you have a domestic partner, DON"T work at SA and then complain about it! Its like building your house next to an airport and then complaining about the noise. Get a life!
It seems to me that the "SA haters" go above an beyond any "hate" the SA allegedly hates upon the "gays" . :)

Agreed. I've had a few people climbing over me at concerts as people try to get their flowers, stuffed animals, jewelry, letters, etc to the stage, a few clamouring to reach the front for the edge of seventeen walk, etc. People fly all over the country, all over the world to see Stevie. Sure, most of us don't know her mother, but Nicks fans surely know of her. Stevie is giving fans a chance to participate--it's on her official website. Stevie wants to raise $100,000 as a goal for her mother. Stevie HAS $100,000--that's not in question. But I think it's clear Stevie was allowing her fans to participate in this--both for Stevie and for her mother. So far there are 24 donors.
There is a place for fans to write notes if they choose. One heart-breaking note on the Barbara Nicks donor page is this one: "In loving memory of Mike W & the ones who sing at night."
Sharon Celani left a tribute. Some people donate anon.
http://www.onlineredkettle.org/BarbaraNicks
Gay? You can mention you are gay on your tribute. Let Stevie fans make a showing--if that is your wish. You don't have to be ashamed. You guys do a night of 1000 Stevies! She knows her fans.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle where a special fund has been formed in memory of Barbara Nicks.

They won't be getting a dime for me. That's all I'm going to say. Personally, I'd find a gay non-profit in Arizona and make a donation in her name, were I so inclined.

Pot, kettle, black. Do you realize you're putting down "gay men's drama" in a post that's overly dramatic itself?
Charities that engage in discrimination don't get a free pass, IMO, though of course the Nicks family is free to choose what they want, fans are free to choose to give or not, and fans are also free to inform others about SA's discriminatory policies.

Just to clarify for the clearly uneducated...
Salvation Army does NOT turn away "gay people with HIV" or anything of the sort from food, shelter or anything of the sort. You people act as if they are treating them like lepers.
The most "discriminatory" thing Salvation Army does is they do not want to give same sex benefits to their employees. That is their policy and they are free to do it. This is the USA. You get freedom OF RELIGION, NOT Freedom FROM Religion. Barbara clearly understands this and it seems as if Stevie does too. Maybe you can all learn from their very precious example.
