News to me. Where did you read it?

Yeah, I remember that. Luke A., who used to post here, shared the news. Luke had contacts at Warner Bros and apparently execs were quite keen on "Love Changes" -- which, of course, was produced by David Kahne, who was their vice president of A&R at the time.

No, but I think we just read it in the same place.
It's not one of my favorites from TISL, I must say. Every Day was a much better choice, even though I don't give a sht about singles.

Maybe Stevie shouldn't really either since she hasn't had a hit one in over 22 years?

Yep I remember reading early press releases that stated Love Changes would be the first single. Don't know why they scrapped it. I love that song

I've said it before & I'll say it again. I strongly believed "Love Changes" should've been the 1st single from TISL. Don't confuse that with it being my favorite song or best song from TISL, but while the rest of the album had a classic Stevie sound meets modern day renaissance, LC was the freshest sounding production from Stevie in a long time!
Thanks in part to David Kahne direction & production, LC was filled with funky & soulful filled verses and lots of attitude driven lyrics & vocals by Stevie, with a supple, bright & crisp mix, which would have been a perfect sound to reintroduce Stevie to radio & gain new listeners, esp. in the spring/summer of 2001. Plus, *bonus* - it was a Stevie penned song.
"Everyday" was just an ok song that could've been sung by anyone, in addition Stevie sang it in her lower register, which turns some casual listeners off, not to mention it obviously being a cover. It feels like Stevie threw Shanks a bone by covering this song, since he came in and finished, essentially rescuing, the remaining TISL sessions.

Back in 2001, Stevie still had a shot, probably her last shot at a modest or even Top 40 hit single success.
In 2011, I agree, and so it seems did Stevie & her crew, as IYD does not pander to current chart sensibilities, or trends. IYD is an album that could have been released in the 80's, 90's or 2000's. It's timeless! And Stevie put her heart & soul into it w/o regard to being or sounding current. She made the record she wanted to make. One that she and her fan's have long longed for - Great to good, solidly written songs, that do not chase any trends or worry about being hip.
TISL was definitely more calculated & sometimes forced effort on Stevie's & Warners part to try & reintroduce the hit making days of Stevie Nicks of the 80's.

I've gone back and forth on the commercial potential of "Love Changes" over the years. On the one hand, it does have a very catchy chorus and the lyrics are pretty well-crafted. However, something about her vocal misses the mark, particularly on the chorus. I suspect the song is in too low of a key, requiring her to drift toward her granny voice on the chorus. Another issue is that it sounds a lot like a warmed-over 80s track. I'm not sure how well that 80s sound would have fared on the radio in 2001.
Nonetheless, it is a good song...just not quite reaching its full potential.

I'd say Planets of the Universe reaching number one on the dance charts counts as a hit single.
Also, Secret Love charted:
US Billboard Adult Contemporary Singles - #20
US Billboard Triple A Singles - #25
I'd say that's a hit, too. Maybe not of the same caliber as many current artists, but a top 20 hit is still very respectable for her, given the ageism that is prevalent in radio today.
I also dig "Love Changes" and always thought it would have made a fine single. I didn't realise it was being considered as the first single, way back in early 2000, but certainly wish those plans had come to fruition. Waiting for the album, from the initial recording sessions in December 1998 to it's eventual release in May 2001, was absolute agony for me! A taster at the beginning of 2000 would have been most gratefully received and perhaps would have paved the way for a much earlier release for the album (we know it was finished by the end of September 2000 so it could have easily been issued in time for Christmas that year).

As much as I like this song I don't think it would have been good choice as the album's first single. "Everyday" wasn't either. I think they should have released "Trouble In Shangri La", a title track, as a first single. It was a strong song lyrically and melodically and should have made some impact. "Everyday" was too much in Adult Contemporary vein. As the album was heralded as a comeback for a Queen of Rock, they should have chosen more "rockish" song to start promotion.

Agreed with those who think Love Changes should have been the lead single. It still sounds fresh to this day, imo. And, whilst I think TISL is the strongest song on the album, it's simply too long for a single release, and they would have had to butcher it. Ditto Fall From Grace.
Sorcerer and Planets were great singles, if only for the amazing video we got for Sorcerer.

I'd much have preferred Love Changes. Every Day is pretty dull. Who recorded it first? I know it's a John Shanks song in that he wrote/produced it - did he record it too?
From what I understand, only John Shanks had recorded "Everyday" and Stevie essentially replaced his voice with hers (apparently in one take) directly over the existing instrumentation which made it's way onto the album untouched. I recall her saying in an interview that she sensed the song meant a lot to him and so she was happy to bring the song to completion.

Planets Of The Universe definitely counts. Even though the dance/club charts is a niche audience, a #1 song/remix on a Billboard Chart is a #1 song!
Maybe Stevie shouldn't really either since she hasn't had a hit one in over 22 years?
Also, don't forget that both Stevie's IYD 2 radio releases charted on the US Billboard AC charts. "For What It's Worth" also peaked at #25 on the US Billboard Adult Contemporary Singles chart.
Stevie's IYD singles performance on these AC charts are practically identical to her TISL charting radio releases on the same radio format. "Everyday" peaked at #17 & "Sorcerer" peaked at #21 on Billboards AC charts. "Say You Will" also peaked at #17 on the AC charts.
So in 10 years Stevie or FM have charted 6 x's on Billboards AC charts:
1 Top 25 song (For What It's Worth)
4 Top 20 songs (Everyday, Sorcerer, Say You Will & Secret Love)
1 Top 10 song (Peacekeeper)
In addition Stevie charted high on Billboards dance/club charts:
#1 Planets Of The Universe remix/single in 2001
#2 Stand Back remix single in 2007
#26 Dreams remix single in 2006, which also charted in 7 other countries, including peaking at #14 on UK's Top 20 pop song chart!
Not too shabby for a 50 something to sixty something female pop/rock recording artist. Who else is there of Stevie's contemporaries from her generation besides Cher, that have nabbed that many top 20 charting songs. I believe Stevie has even charted more songs than Cher in the last 10 years.

Definately Stevie beats out our poor and plastic Cher:) (don't want to offend anyone, but I really dislike her music). I think, that Stevie is probably the only female rocker of her genereration that is still successful on the charts (where is Pat Benatar? I think her latest album "Go!" didn't enter Top 200, and Linda Ronstadt? "Adieu False Heart" briefly made Top 200, and what about Heart? They had their latest album for about 2 weeks in the charts and then disappeared, even with semi-successful tour). Considering Stevie's age she's even more successful than Tina Turner and her latest chart entries ("Twenty Four Seven" in 1999 which was supported by gigantic world tour). Maybe Carly Simon... but she records only lullabies or cover albums now...

I always loved Love Changes, but I never thought it sounded like a "hit song" to me. Stevie even said in the commentary for Talk To Me that she doesn't set out to write "hit songs" and that she's sometimes given them to do by the record label. I'm amazed that Fall From Grace wasn't used as a single. Sure they would have had to edit it down for radio play but it had hit single all over it. Plus, it was a really strong performance from Stevie. TISL also had a really radio friendly sound but it too would have needed to be trimmed for time and that would have ruined the whole narrative of the song.

too funny about Stevie saying she doesn't set out to make "hit" songs. I recall the moment in the Destiny Rules movie where she mentions "praying to the hit gods" (or something like that) when submitting "say you will"

I always say that the Universe speaks to me through Stevie Nicks. Every time I have some sort of issue in my life, Stevie releases an album or I discover an unreleased track, or a changed lyric in a live recording that puts things into perspective for me.
When TISL came out I was just ending a really bad relationship. He was a total sociopath and knew just what to say to control me. I was moving out and setting out on my own and trying to make sense out of it all. The guy was really bad for me and damaged my self-esteem to the point that even though I knew I was doing the right thing, he made me feel like a horrible person for leaving. Every time I hear this song it gets me right down to the soul. "It wasn't that I didn't love you, I just couldn't make you see that as hard as I tried to make it all better, it was not better for me. The love that I gave you was all around you there was nothing left for me." That made me see that it was okay to leave and that I had a very good reason to. It was so empowering.
If I ever had a chance to thank Stevie for all the pieces of "advice" she's given me over the years I'd end up boring her to tears with all the stories. But somehow "thank you" wouldn't seem enough. But it is a life long dream of mine to be able to thank her someday. Oh well.

was LC a Dallas Austin produced song originally?? it really feels a little RnB to me. (aside) i'd LOVE to hear his production of her. anyone ever heard it? also, i feel LC is a much more unique "organic" song, whereas Everyday just seems like Single by Committee (sp?)

The demo is very close to the album version, so I think the RnB-ness comes from Stevie, not a producer. Stevie loves RnB.

Although my situation happened a few years after TISL had been released, I can relate to every single word you just wrote here. The sociopath, control, trying to take my self esteem...so hit the target with me too. And that line from the song hit me and hit me hard along with "I only say what you wanna hear, when there is a conflict I stay clear, when he was loving I was in tears, he knows my fears". It took everything out of me to get out of that relationship and it probably took about 3 years for me to even feel like me again. Thank God I had the strength to do that. And Stevie deserves quite a bit of the credit.

I experienced the same reaction to this song by non/casual fans after TISL was released. My older brother, who is a fan (much more on the casual side than I), really LOVED this song, and always said they should have released it as a single, and he is much more a connoisseur of popular music than I am by far. Til' this day my brother still buys 2-3 cd's of new releases a week! I reap the rewards & happily get to upload and hear stuff that I'd never buy like the new Beyonce' or Kelly Clarkson etc.;)

I love your description! Space, indeed is why this shines imo. I remember practically falling outta my chair when I 1st hear the leak of this song:thumbsup: Her vocals were so crisp. And tinged with just the right amounts of attitude and reflection. I love this song, it seems ti be very underrated in the fan community. And the demo is great too!

OMG, I was in an occult book store the other day in Sherman Oaks, which is odd it's called a book store because they have, like, 30 books and that's it. But I digress. And I saw this jewelry and one of them had a charm called "The Enchantress" and I had Blue Lamp running through my head for the rest of the day.

Deep Dish/Stevie "Dreams" peaked at #26 on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart . The track and remixes weren't aimed at the commercial U.S. dance market, but it was huge internationally (and not just in clubs) and the track was one of the most licensed dance tracks of 2006-2008. It appears on dozens of commercially released compilations, DJ or club-branded collections, etc. Too bad Stevie couldn't appear in the music video.

That's not for lack of trying! Not that it matters much at this point. She still has a career, respect, and is still writing/producing good songs.
