I've only been a part of this great site for this past year but I've noticed recently how it seems that Stevie will mention things in these interviews that reflect exactly what we are discussing on the threads...there are several examples but tonights Arts interview in Australia when she suddenly mentions Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell as her two writing influences is just too crazy...I've heard her mention Joni a few times but, come on, to mention the two of them in the same sentence after a few of our threads recently is down right strange.....any thoughts?

^I just saw that interview as well and noticed the same thing.

So funny. Of course that could be coincidence, but, it's still pretty amusing when stuff like that happens.

She has mentioned at recent shows that people are talking about this or that article of clothing she's wearing online, and stuff like that. I believe the red shawl was what she cited. I'm guessing she has people around her who see things online that amuse them, then they pass it along to her. Or perhaps it's part of her assistant Karen's job to keep her finger on the pulse of Stevie's fans. Or maybe Stevie's managers/publicists use message boards as a tool as to how to guide Stevie. Who knows. I can't see Stevie herself sitting huddled over a computer, clicking the mouse & reading the Ledge on her own, though.

I noticed that too. She even mentioned the Lindsey / Bob Dylan argument, which she's done before. Obviously she knows it's well and oft quoted.

If they don't, they should be. It would be ignorant for them not to lurk on Stevie forums. Companies spend TONS of money to get customer feedback, Stevie's marketing team gets it all free here!

I don't see Stevie herself using a computer taking the time to sift through online fan forums regarding topics about her but her people may very well be and it's why I'm careful now more than ever about some of the things I say. I think in a small sense Stevie or her people finally realized they had an additional outlet with the internet as a promotional tool and finally gave in some about their negative views on it and using to their advantage. I have found it funny she's recently addressed her wearing (different) clothing for once and also a while back she was spotted on the red carpet in knee high black boots, something she hadn't wore in a while but a topic that had been discussed here just a few days prior. Regardless of what she wears or does, I hope she realizes no matter what, we fans love her because she's stayed true to herself always and for being Stevie Nicks. Even today.

Btw, I have it on good authority that Barry reported

They definitely do. I received several PMs on here from a person who I truly believe is in Stevie's camp. She (I think it's a woman) was (politely) getting on me for posting so many demos/outtakes, and we had a polite back and forth as I explained how much I LOVE ALL of Stevie's songs. I told her how the first time I hear "Julia" in August 1988, it was like finding a missing piece of my soul. It was a friendly conversation, but she clearly stated that Stevie and WB do not like these recordings being circulated.

That was earlier in 2011. After In Your Dreams was released, she PM-ed me again, asking what I thought of the album. I wrote a nice, very long and loving review for her, and she seemed very pleased and happy to hear I was enjoying Stevie's new releases, not just unreleased material.

Haven't heard from her since May or June, but I think she was for real.

Well, if anyone is listening from Stevie's camp I wish sooooo much that they used the back screen more effectively durig her shows...There is no singer out there that has more atmospheric music...the potential for the back screen is LIMITLESS with her backlog of photos, videos, etc...it would be inexpensive to create a stylistic mood for stevie's shows that is lacking now...I think, in part, that is why the recent Moonlight video is soooo disappointing....it could have been soooo much more!!

Agreed! I always look at Stevie's plain stage these days and wonder why she has not put some effort into it.
She's always talking atmosphere, but her stage show is sadly very unimaginative & plain. She's been using the same tired video since the Crystal Visions tour and it gives her shows a very repetitive feel.
It's too bad they dont understand it would enhance the overall experience of the show to have a nice light/video production behind them.

I preferred dramatic backdrops of yesteryear like the one during Enchanted tour, over all these flashing videos artists use now. If they don't want so many demos and outtakes posted, then they need to release a huge box set full of those. It's kind of hard to pay someone for something if they don't have it out for the general public to buy.

So true! I'd shell out tons for Stevie demos if she would release them. Hell, she has all the best quality ones, so even if she doesn't want to spend the time and money to create a physical boxed set, release them on iTunes! We'd still buy them!

I agree.... I always think of the demo of Rhiannon where she talks about going to a park and recording the "sound of birds rising... you know, the rustling" and whenever I see her do Rhiannon live and sing with just the piano before bursting into the full-band part of the song I see that image of like a big flock of birds rising up into the sky....and wonder why that isn't the image in the screens behind her...

Well, Mick was half-assed trying to in 1998. That's where Maureen got ALL of her things, from a guy working with Mick on the Fleetwood Mac box set of rarities.

But, according to that guy, Mick was still gently partying then, so he had no focus if he wasn't on tour.

But for her own box set in 1998, Stevie originally had the "Mirror, Mirror" from 1992 that I got from eBay last Summer, as well as other true rarites, initially scheduled for inclusion on Enchanted. More rare than demos of fairly new songs like "Twisted" and "Sweet Girl". But all that stuff got pulled, too, at the last minute. So, I don't know when they expect to release these things (Stevie, FM, WB).

Very recently, Stevie once again mentioned the "songs that didn't make it on to Rumours" maybe finally getting released soon. I'm guessing that was the Rumours Box Set that was to accompany the 2009 Unleashed! Tour. Entertainment Tonight and Access Hollywood even mentioned the Rumours box in their interviews with Stevie & Lindsey. So, if Stevie's mentioning that again now, maybe that's a possibility?

The insider who emailed me gave the analogy of trying to put myself in Stevie's shoes, and would I want something released that I wasn't happy with how it turned out, if it was something I held back because it just wasn't exactly how I wanted it to be. I did understand what she was saying, although I LOVE everything Stevie creates. That's kind of how Lori wrote about it on the NicksFix as well.

I'm conflicted about this...of course, the music is Stevie's and hers alone but these demos would have NEVER seen the light of day...I dont know if Stevie is aware how the demos have kept me (and other fans) still interested in her career over the years...she has chosen to release so little new material over the years that if all of us had to wait for an album every ten years I'm not sure that I would have been as devoted ....these demos have kept me interested...While Stevie often talks about sequencing, the faltering music industry and the long difficult record making process she should remember her fans are waiting YEARS just to hear a new song.....

This has been my fear with Stevie since she did Moonlight. I feel she hasn't released a lot of her songs because they just weren't ready, and every album she does she always goes backs and finishes some of those songs. This time around, she did it with Lady From The Mountain and absolutely loves it. Not only did she finally record it, but she wrote more to it and changed the song. So I now fear that Stevie will be hellbent against releasing any of her demos because she will always be thinking, "Hmm maybe this is the next Moonlight. Maybe I haven't finished writing this song yet." But I mean really, Stevie has such a huge catalogue of unreleased stuff, she shouldn't be afraid. And if she releases a demo and later takes that song and changes it up, so be it!

Mike, if you don't mind me asking a stupid question...
Who is Maureen, and how does one recognize the demos she ended up having something to do with? Are they a compilation or just random?
Also, about the person writing you. If you a hear from them again, would you suggest that the sooner Stevie gets all these wonderful demo's out there legally, the sooner WB can make their buck (as all of us true blues are going to buy buy buy). I don't know that the Internet is the downfall of the music companies, but those companies seem to do very little to get the artist out there. I don't really think WB is behind all of the publicity Stevie is doing. I think she just decided that she is going to put herself out there. Though I could be wrong and often am...

So just a shout out to TPB, get busy with those tapes!!!

Maureen is from New York, and in Late 1997, she somehow got connected with a guy who was working with Mick on a tentative Fleetwood Mac box set of rarities. This guy (I forget his name) IMed me a few times on AOL, too, but he was pretty wacky.

At first, he sold Maureen copies of the tapes Mick gave him to go through, since Mick preferred to sit around and drink (sorry, peeps!) and enjoy his life, now that he was mega-well off again after The Dance phenomenon. He was supposed to have whipped this project into shape before Christmas 1998, as a 30th Anniversary for Fleetwood Mac. Needless to say, he never got much work done on it.

But this guy just started giving Maureen tapes, as he ended up liking her, I guess. And Maureen shared tapes at first, but then began her CD-selling business circa 1998-2001. As her friend at that point, Maureen gave me copies of everything, but at some point she got very paranoid and cut me off.

However, the amount of Stevie and Fleetwood Mac rarites that we have today because of her, whether giving or trading, is staggering! Mick had copies of much of Stevie's unreleased solo work, and Maureen said Mick just gave this guy boxes of cassettes to go through, as he didn't even know what was on anything.

Off the top of my head, here is what is directly from Maureen, and I mean as well-known outtake versions or demos, which we did NOT have before 1998:

The Wild Heart outtakes:
One More Tomorrow
Violet And Blue - Alternate/Movie version
Nothing Ever Changes - Demo
If Anyone Falls - Outtake
Dial The Number - totally different

Mirage outtakes:
Gypsy - many outtakes and mixes
Straight Back
That's Alright
If You Were My Love - Maureen is the one who premiered this!
Smile At You - An alternate version and better "flaming!" sound
Many LB & CMcV outtakes/mixes (I don't know their stuff)

Rock A Little outtakes & demos:
Night Gallery
Rock A Little - 1981 session with Mick on drums
Rock A Bye Baby

Tango In The Night outtakes and demos:
Joan Of Arc
Juliet
When I See You Again
Seven Wonders
Special Kind Of Love - and all the other well-known Tango demos/outtakes

Behind The Mask outtakes:
No Questions Asked - 3 mixes
Affairs Of The Heart - 2 mixes with extra vox
Victim Of Love - BB outtake (or is that RV?)
In The Back Of My Mind - 2 totally different versions
Lots of BB & RV outtakes

China Doll - This was one of her biggies! NO ONE had ever heard this before Maureen!

Other stuff:
This Is My Cross To Bear
Beauty And The Beast - Tusk outtake
Lots of Tusk mixes
If You Were My Love - Piano demos (before the Masters!)
Fireflies - Outtake
Rumours Tour rehearsals
Mirage Tour Rehearsals
Rose Garden - Earliest known version

I'm forgetting TONS... Now, some would also be on the Master Reels a few years later in better sound, but much of Maureen's stuff only originates from those tapes (so far).

I don't understand this. Does Warner's own her back catalog including unreleased demos?

mikebise
11-24-2011, 12:35 PM
Stevie probably records her demos on her own money and she can do with them as she will.

Fully recorded songs/outtakes were most likely paid by the record label (WB since WB also owns Atlantic), so WB most probably has a stake in those, unless Stevie and/or Fleetwood Mac paid them back for all that cost.

That's why I don't understand why record companies aren't freaking out at the immense amount of Stevie unreleased material right there~ up front on YouTube and other places. I assume Atlantic/WB paid quite a bit of money for the 1992 "Mirror, Mirror", and I'm sure Chris Lord-Alge doesn't come cheap. As producer, he would get royalties from that version of the song if it was ever officially released. So, that's money potentially out of WB's, Atlantic's, CL-A's and Stevie's pockets by that song circulating for free, which stems from it never being released in the first place.

But I have no real idea how it all works with the money.

Artistically, Stevie has said she wants to make a big deal out of the Rhiannon recordings. I assume that's why they have never been officially released. The record companies probably wanted mainstream releases, not more niche product (and I'm just guessing). But Stevie is talking about Rhiannon getting done in 2012, so we can hope!

And I would GLADLY spend money for official releases of all and every single song I've gotten in unofficial means!!! :)

True, true, true!

Stevie should have a kind of contest or poll to see which demos the fans would most like to hear, whether she's happy with them or not. I mean, I LOVE Forest of the Black Roses, Blue Water, She Loves Him Still and Love You Enough just as they are. If the fans love them as they are in the demos she ought to put them out.

Would the name of "This Guy" be Frank? I know his last name although I will refrain from disclosing it at this point in time! I know or rather used to know him and at the time he shared with me the details of the box set of rarities, and a book which included a complete discography that he was helping Mick with at the time!

That would be him, I think. I was remembering either "Frank" or "George". I think it's Frank, though. He IMed me a few times on AOL in 1999, and Maureen thought I was trying to bypass her and get songs from him, so she just disowned me as a friend.

Do you still have the discography list?

I loved the atomsphere on that tour. I wish she'd incorporate something like that along with the backdrop. Now that would be an awesome show.

Yeah I prefer dramatic stage backdrops more than use of projection screens today. I bet it was a bich though to put all those up each show, ones from yesteryear. So cool though. I took pics of the stage and of Stevie's Cincinnati show from Enchanted tour, I just never post the stuff. Her red boots and (classic) Stand Back shawl were some of my fave outfits and also the cream outfit and shawl from Edge that night. The shawl fell off I remember cause she walked to the left side of the stage and towards the end of the song she moreless started shaking and dancing in convulsions and it fell to the floor and she left it there because she was so caught up in trance in the moment. I wish we still got these kinds of performances now. Unrehearsed spur-of-the-moment actions and stuff.
