5. The Twilight Singers, “What Makes You Think You’re the One”When it comes to covers, Greg Dulli’s the man. He can pluck any noise from the global songbook and belt that sucker to a brand-new cool. Back in 2004, the Singers dropped She Loves You, an album that explored the works of everyone from John Coltrane to Björk. But what they do to Fleetwood Mac’s “What Makes You Think You’re the One,” smoothing Lindsey Buckingham’s herky-jerky stumble into a cinematic heart-soar, is the one that’ll bring you back.

Lindsey Buckingham’s herky-jerky stumble

That is what made the song so good.

No way does that version own the original. It's way too boring for me.

Certainly, Lindsey's herky jerky side gives his songs spirit and emotion. When it hits you unexpectedly it has more impact. I mean, that's what makes In Our Own Time so good, to me. The roller coaster peak that you don't expect.

The way he performs What Makes You Think You're The One lets you hear the indignance. Also, when his voice goes from hard and high to low and softer, I feel the vulnerability in words like dying and crying more, because of the downward swoop, than I would if his phrasing had been more even. I mean, it says to me, "what makes you think you're the one who can laugh without crying, because I can't."

Why do you think you can go through this without pain, when I can't?

hear hear. that cover version took the passion, the feeling away from it. i like that i can tell the strain Lindsey has at some points. it's not supposed to be a pretty soaring song, it's my favourite to put on when i'm angry. interesting cover of it though, i would like it if i wasn't stuck on the original.
